Kovalam definitely won't appeal to everyone because its main beach is bordered by a densely packed row of hotels and does get busy, although there are quieter pockets in places.

Did you know Kerala has over-water bungalows? You'll find them at Poovar Island Resort, about 30-minutes further down the coast from Kovalam. Granted, they're not as spectacular as some of those in the Maldives, but they're still recommended. Poovar Island is not far from the Tamil Nadu border and is quite an amazing natural wonder. It lies at the point where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea. In between is an elongated sand bar. 

The main attraction for Hindus who visit Trivandrum is the 16th-century Padmanabhaswamy temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and built by rulers of the kingdom of Travancore. A great deal of wealth has been hidden in the temple, making it the richest temple in the world. Some of the treasures were recently unearthed but the largest vault remains unopened. Unfortunately, if you're not Hindu, you won't be allowed to go inside the temple unless you declare you believe in Hinduism. Trivandrum also has some interesting museums and galleries, housed in classical heritage buildings. These include the Napier Museum , Natural History Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery in the museum complex, and Kuthiramalika Palace Museum outside the Padmanabhaswamy temple.

Jatayupara Earth's Center is an ambitious new attraction in Kerala. It opened in late 2016, in Chadayamangalam village in Kerala's Kollam district, about an hour north of Trivandrum. It's dominated by a 200-foot-long landmark sculpture of Jatayu, the mythical vulture that's believed to have been killed on the rocky hilltop while trying to rescue Sita from Ravan. Sargaalaya Crafts Village

An initiative of the Kerala state government, Sargaalaya won a National Tourism Award for Best Rural Tourism Project in 2016. Kerala is one of the top travel destinations in India, and following are my top travel tips for Kerala. Kerala has soft, white sand beaches, gentle people, a tropical climate, fresh spices, tea plantations, India’s highest literacy rate, a unique culture … there are so many reasons to love Kerala. When asked, I often recommend starting a first trip to India in Kerala as it provides for a soft landing.

Flying down to Kerala

On my first trip to India, I landed in Delhi in December 2005 and by the end of the month, I was chilly! Delhi can drop to 5 C. at night in winter, and the houses are not heated. I was staying with Indian friends, who were all huddled in layers of warm clothing around room heaters, and I decided enough is enough. I did not leave Canada and travel all the way to India to be cold. I called a travel agent I knew and booked a flight to Trivandrum, Kerala.

I flew on December 31, the only flight available, and I cannot tell you how happy I was to arrive in Kerala on a sun-kissed, balmy day. From that day to this, I have had a special place in my heart for this lush, tropical state. If you wish to discover this beautiful state, “God’s own country,” then I recommend that you book a tour package from a reliable and trusted Kerala travel agency like eKerala Tourism.

God’s Own Country

The motto for Kerala, “God’s Own Country,” refers to the rich heritage, lively culture, lush topography and positive socio-political climate. A Yahoo! answer to the question “Why is Kerala called God’s own country” turned up this: “Nestled between the pristine waters of the Arabian sea on the west and the lush Western Ghat mountains on the east, its intense network of rivers and lagoons, thick forests, exotic wildlife, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters and a long shoreline of serene beaches make it a traveler’s paradise.” In Kerala, humans and nature coexist in harmony, and nature abounds.

Top travel recommendations in Kerala

I’ve been to Kerala many times, including to take Ayurvedic treatment, visit the Backwaters, enjoy the beach and the many of the best tourist places in Kerala . I have also driven along the coast, making several stops along the way — including to get a hug from Amma, “the hugging saint,” whose ashram is in Kerala. Based on my experience and those of others, here are my top suggestions for a trip to Kerala.

1. Take treatments at an Ayurvedic resort. I stayed at Shinshiva Ayurvedic Resort for two heavenly weeks in 2006 and often dream of returning to relax on the beach, enjoy daily oil massages and eat fresh, healthy food. There are many Ayurvedic resorts and hospitals in Kerala to choose from, from the serious and austere to luxurious resorts on the beach that cater to tourists.

2. Float along the Backwaters. The Backwaters of Kerala are one of the state’s top tourist attractions and for a reason. It’s a unique way to relax and enjoy a traditional culture on board your own boat.

3. Ascend to the tea plantations of Munnar. Featured to great affect in the Oscar winning film Life of Pi , the lush hill station of Munnar is a centre of the coffee, tea and spice gardens of Kerala. A great place to find cooler weather and to commune with the natural beauty of the region.

4. Track wildlife at Peryiyar. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of India’s most popular nature reserves, home to bison, sambar, wild boar, langur, elephants and about 46 tigers, at last count.

5. Visit the old port of Cochin / Kochi. Kerala has long been a seaport, attracting traders from the Middle East and beyond, and Cochin was a major port of call. The old part of the city is fascinating, and features boutique hotels, great restaurants, many cultural attractions, a spice market, the famous Chinese fishing nets and a wonderful atmosphere. Here, you can about a lot more things to do in Kochi .

6. Bask on the beach in Varkala. This is a favourite spot in Kerala for tourists. Dramatic cliffs, gorgeous sunsets and a relaxed vibe combine to make it a great spot to unwind and unplug.

7. Enjoy the festivals. Kerala has its own unique culture, distinct from the other states of India, and many of its own festivals . Onam, for example, is an exuberant festival that takes place in August/September to celebrate the abundance of nature.

8. Celebrate monsoon season. I have been besotted by the idea of being in Kerala when the monsoon arrives since seeing a documentary about it, called Chasing India’s Monsoon . While it is the off-season, and extremely hot and humid, it is considered a special time to be in Kerala. Many festivals take place and apparently Ayurvedic treatments are more effective.

9. Stay at a homestay. Lonely Planet rated Kerala as one of their top family friendly destinations and recommended a homestay.

10. Eat fresh food and glorious spices. Kerala is the spice bowl of India, and you can visit, and even stay, at the spice gardens. The local cuisine is rice-based, spiked with fresh spices and often eaten off a large, bright green banana leaf.

Prepare yourself for an explosion of flavours, vibrant colours and amazing aromas – Keralan food is absolutely divine and something you will remember vividly from your trip. Being a coastal state, many dishes feature freshly caught fish, but there are also plenty of vegetarian options on offer, along with meat, unlike many other destinations.

Keralan regional cuisine includes Keralan fish curry, Karimeen pollichathu (fried fish), Fish moilee, Malabar Parotta (pancakes), pumpkin and lentil curry and Palada payasam, a rice dessert flavoured with cardamom. Wonderful Wildlife

Kerala is home to a wide variety of animals such as the Asian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Sambar Deer, Langurs, Flying Squirrels and around 453 varieties of birds including rare species such as the Indian Grey Hornbill and Oriental Bay Owl.

One of the largest sanctuaries in Kerala is Periyar National Park which you can explore on foot, jeep, boat or raft and where you might be able to catch a glimpse of a tiger if you’re lucky. The Western Ghats is a wildlife lover’s paradise, as it is home to fourteen wildlife sanctuaries surrounded by trekking trails. Elsewhere there is a variety of bird and wildlife sanctuaries to explore, along with the chance to spot monkeys by the side of the road!

Plantation Tours

Grab a cuppa for the next item on our 10 reasons to visit Kerala. A highlight of any visit to Kerala is the chance to look around a spice, coffee or tea plantation. You can learn about how aromatic regional spices, refreshing tea and speciality coffee is grown, and get the chance to sample them too.

There are many plantations across the state, with the largest being in Munnar, Periyar and Wayanad. There’s nothing better than meandering through a vibrant field of green leaves in the sunshine looking out over wonderful scenery. Pure bliss.

Beautiful Beaches

One of the advantages of visiting a coastal state is the opportunity to spend some time on wonderful beaches. The beaches of Kerala are very well kept and offer wonderful views. You can relax in a hammock, sunbathe or enjoy a spectacular sunset. And if you’re a fan of watersports, you’ll find kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving and snorkelling, parasailing, windsurfing and water skiing all on offer.

Some of the best beaches in Kerala include Kovalam and its jaunty lighthouse, serene Marari Beach surrounded by coconut groves and Varkala with its line of beach shacks and shops. Definitely a favourite of our 10 reasons to visit Kerala!

Superb Sightseeing

There’s something for everyone to enjoy in Kerala. God’s Own Country is home to the Western Ghats, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This mountain range dates back further than the Himalayan mountains and stretches from Tamil Nadu through most of South India. This hotspot of biological diversity is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

In Cochin, you’ll find lively bazaars and upscale restaurants, all shrouded in a colonial vibe from British rule. The pre-historic Edakkal Caves in Wayanad are worth a visit to see the exquisite rock and wall carvings, as is Bekal Fort with its water-and Observation Tower affording panoramic views.

Captivating Culture

Kerala is jam-packed with a fascinating culture. In Cochin, you’ll find an amalgamation of different cultures reflecting the state’s various residents over the centuries.

Discover the Jewish synagogue known for its spectacular Chinese tiles, Belgian chandeliers and period furnishings; the Gothic Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica at Fort Kochi; and Mattancherry Palace known as the Dutch Palace that showcases scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana in detailed frescoes and murals.

The perfect way to end an evening is to watch a performance of Kathakali, a 17th-century classical dance. This exciting combination of dance and drama features exaggerated facial expressions, and if you can arrive early, there’s often the chance to watch the dancers apply their theatrical make-up.

Fabulous Festivals

All year round Kerala plays host to a variety of celebrations and events. These explosions of colour and culture include extravagant parades featuring lustrously decorated sculptures, traditional and modern music and dancing, sacred rituals and snake boat racing. In August or September, Onam is a 10-day harvest festival in remembrance of King Mahabali who brought happiness and prosperity, and Theyyam is an 800o-year-old dance ritual depicting tales of Indian folklore and legends. For a more chilled out time, there are well-being, yoga and walking festivals.

Joining in the fun of a festival is a great way to be part of community celebrations and will create magical holiday memories and fantastic photo opportunities.

Restorative Ayurveda

After a long tour, why not relax and unwind with a soothing Ayurvedic therapy or massage. Kerala is famous for Ayurveda, one of the oldest forms of traditional medicine that have been practised in India for thousands of years. ‘Ayurveda’ translates as the ‘science of life’ from ‘Ayur’ (‘life’) and ‘Veda’ (‘science’ or ‘knowledge’).

Explore the Hill Stations

The hill stations of Kerala are the last of our 10 reasons to visit Kerala and are a wonderful choice for something a little different. In the heat of summer, you can escape from the harsh rays of the sun to the cooler hill stations. Athirapally is home to magnificent waterfalls at around 80 feet high, while Thekkady offers nature walks through its varied habitats and diverse forest.

In Wayanad, discover exotic flora and fauna along with tea, coffee, spice and rubber plantations and in Munnar you’ll find the tea museum, rolling tea gardens and the beautiful  neelakurinji  flower that blooms once every 12 years.

The 7 Day Kerala Itinerary

Experience the Best of Kerala in 7 Days

This 7 Day Kerala Road Trip Itinerary is designed keeping the following factors in mind:

• Fly in and Fly Out from Cochin International Airport
• Have a vehicle at your disposal
• Have 8 days in your hand

After doing a 7 Day Road Trip to Bhutan back in March 2019, I decided to go on a   One Week Trip to Kerala but with my family, and this was roughly what we did, and what I recommend to you as well, as it contains a glimpse of everything you can experience in Kerala – God’s Own Country including admiring the different forms of street art, and cultural heritage in Kochi ; visiting the massive tea estates in Munnar ; experiencing the rawness of Nature in Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady and enjoying the quietness and serenity of the Kerala Backwaters.

Having said that, the main priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is to relax and rejuvenate , as there isn’t much to do in Munnar, Thekkady or Alleppey.

Day 1 – Land in Kochi – Explore Fort Kochi

Day 2 – Kochi – Munnar and Munnar Spice Garden Visit

Day 3 – munnar sightseeing and tea factory visit.

Day 4 – Munnar – Thekkady

Day 5 – Thekkady Nature Trails

Day 6 – thekkady – kumarakom / lake vembanad.

Day 7 – Alleppey Backwaters Houseboat Experience

To make the most out of your Day 1 of your 7 Day Kerala Road Trip , make sure to land in Kochi before mid-day. This way you can check in to a hotel of your liking, preferably in Fort Kochi, and have the rest of the day, post lunch to explore the city of Kochi.

A charming seaside area, Fort Kochi is known for its Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture, and elaborate bamboo Chinese fishing nets which you can see at Fort Kochi Beach.

Fort Kochi is getting popular for its thriving and blooming art and cultural scene, which becomes evident, as you waltz your way around the narrow by lanes, and admire the different street art graffiti’s.

One place I’ll definitely recommend is the Kashi Art Café , where you’ll find some rather interesting and unique creations of art.

Enjoy a relaxing hearty meal in one of the many quaint cafes spread out in Fort Kochi, before calling it a night, and gearing up for the next day.

It takes around 4-5 hours by road from Kochi to Munnar , so ideally you should start by 9 AM, making sure that you reach Munnar – One of the Best Hill Stations in India ,  by lunch time.

3 hours on the road, and it’s time for the first pit stop – Munnar Spices and Ayurvedic Garden.

The one hour tour across the spice plantation, where the guide briefs about various benefits of different spices and ayurvedic herbs, is quite a learning lesson, which sets a good tone to your 7 Day Kerala Trip.

BTW there’s also a chocolate factory, selling a variety of chocolates, which you can taste and buy as well. However, I’ll rather suggest, you purchase the chocolates from the shops in the city, as they are much cheaper.

After the pit stop, continue on your way to Munnar, and reach your hotel, which was Amber Dale Resort and Spa, Munnar in our case.

Post lunch, explore the nearby Pallivassal Tea Estate , and the Attukad Waterfall , at your own pace.

Like already mentioned, the priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is relaxation and rejuvenation. And there’s nothing better than, waking up without an alarm, and then enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the picturesque tea estates.

Post lunch, head out to Lockhart tea estate for a tour of the tea factory, and learn more about the different processes involved in the production of Tea.

Alternatively, you can head to the Mattupetty Dam and the Mattupetty Tea Estate , and do the tea factory tour there instead.

Thereafter make your way back to your hotel, to enjoy an amazing sunset, and a yummy dinner.

Plan your day in such a way, that you enjoy a hearty breakfast at leisure in Munnar, and reach Thekkady – The Gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve , just in time for lunch in Thekkady.

We managed to reach our resort in Thekkady – Greenwoods Resort Thekkady , just in time for lunch, which was followed by a guided tour around the 6-acre property, where we got to know more about the conscious efforts that, these people have been taking towards sustainability and implementing eco-tourism practices.

Post lunch, and a stroll around the property, there’s nothing better than jumping in the pool for some time, and taking an afternoon nap, in one of the many hammocks, hanging around.

However, keep in mind that if you plan to explore the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the next day, like us, you need to get your tickets for activities like Jungle Patrol, Bamboo Rafting, Border Hiking, Boating and Trekking, from the Ticket counter, which is just a 5 minutes’ drive from Greenwoods Resort Thekkady , and the counter closes around 5 PM in the evening (cross check with the reception).

Also, there are a lot of cultural performances such as Kalaripayattu or Kathakalli , which happen in the evening every day, the tickets of which also need to be purchased before 5 PM (the reception will guide you to the ticket office).

Once you are back after purchasing the tickets, you can explore the Thekkady market, which is just at the doorstep of Greenwoods  Resort Thekkady , and purchase various spices, handmade chocolates, and other ayurvedic products.

Have a sumptuous dinner and call it an early night.

This is the day in your One Week Trip To Kerala when you will be exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve , and the best way to get the best experience, is to opt for  Bamboo Rafting , which basically involves, a one-and-a-half-hour hike through the jungle – an hour-long boat ride – and a hike back to the starting point.

The important thing to keep in mind, is to keep yourself hydrated, which PTR takes care off, as they give you a packed lunch, a bottle of water, some juice and fresh fruits in a backpack, making it easy to carry.

Hiking through the forest, with a guide, be assured that you will spot a lot of different species of birds, and if you are lucky, some animals as well.

This whole experience of exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve , will take up 6 – 7 hours, and you should be back by 3 – 4 PM, giving you enough time to go back to the hotel, take an afternoon nap, and then head out again to see the cultural performances.

As you will be tired, all you should be doing is chilling out once you are back to the resort for dinner, and a leisure stroll across the property, and ensuring that you get proper and well-deserved rest.

Its Day 6 of your 7 Day Trip to Kerala, and you should check out of your hotel in Thekkady, to reach Aleppey/Kumarakom/Lake Vembanad, which will take 3-4 hours by road.

We had planned to stay at Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad , which overlooks the massive Lake Vembanad, and is a hot favorite among both corporate and leisure travelers. We were just in time for lunch, where the chef had prepared an authentic lunch in the local flavors, which was a gastronomic experience like none other.

There are plenty of luxury resorts in Kumarakom and Alleppey , which you can choose from depending on your budget, However, my personal recommendation would be Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad . It was the perfect place for us to be, as there wasn’t much to do, except to relax, enjoy the views, and chill out in the infinity pool overlooking Lake Vembanad.

An interesting addition that you can add to this One Week Kerala Itinerary of yours, while in the Kerala backwaters is visiting Munroe Island , as a day trip from Allepey / Kumarakom.

And just like that the 7 Day Kerala Road Trip, is at the last stage, but worry not, as there’s something special for the last day, which is – A full day cruise of the backwaters in the houseboat where you get to experience the beauty of nature in God’s Own Country, while enjoying a traditional meal on board , comprising of more than 15 dishes, served on a banana leaf.

The last day of the 7 Day Kerala Itinerary , couldn’t be much better than this. And did I forget to mention, you can book a spa session in the evening, after enjoying the day cruising along the backwaters. The 60 minutes ayurvedic massage, is just what your body needs, bringing your relaxing One Week Trip to Kerala to an end.

Cochin International Airport , is merely an hour’s drive from Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad , so you can book your flight accordingly, on the next day, thus bringing an end to a super relaxing 7 Day Kerala Tour.

Where to Stay in Kerala?

Though visited in February 2017 but still fresh in my memories

Our 1st visit to Kerala, where I got to know why it is called Gods own country, an ideal place to relax and forget about all your worries. Kerala is a beautiful state with beautiful people and the awesome food you can have. Here I am writing about my 4 days detailed journey to Kerala.

Once we reached Munnar, we checked into Grand Plaza Hotel and had our dinner there which was included in our plan.

Day 2- In the 1st half of the day, we covered Top station, Echo Point, Photo point, Mattupetty Dam , Rose Garden. Our driver suggested us to cover Top station first as normally people start with the lower places first and then proceed ahead to top station, we did the opposite to avoid the crowd and he was right, when we were coming back from the Top station, there were many people going there. We bought home made chocolate too. Again, Munnar to top station, the views are amazing, really beautiful.

After visiting all these places took a lunch break and had our meal in Shravan Bhawan. We took Kerala thali, ghee roast dosa, and few other things, everything was up to the mark, we loved the sooji payasam there. After having lunch and some rest in our hotel, we proceeded to KDHM, tata tea museum and Hydel Park and came back to our hotel by 6 PM.

It is better to include dinner in your hotel plan as Munnar does not have that many Restaurants.

Day 3- Our third day started with a delicious breakfast and then we proceeded to Alleppey. On our way, we stopped for an hour in Spice Garden Munnar, a beautiful forest where we got to know a lot about spices and Ayurveda. We reached Alleppey at around 4 PM and checked into Ramada Hotel where they upgraded our room and got the back water view rooms which were the icing on the cake. After checking in we got fresh and rushed to Alleppey beach to witness our first beach sunset.

We had our dinner in Thaff where we had Fish Pollichattu and Chicken Curry. The taste was average.

Day 4- This was a day at leisure as there is not much to see in Alleppey, what we actually wanted and as this is not the peak time, we got a deal for the houseboat for Rs 2000 for 2 hours and enjoyed our ride. The views were really beautiful, came back, enjoyed a little bit in our hotel after which we had our light lunch in a small bakery. Now was the time for shopping, bought few sarees from Maheswari, not sure if it is a reliable showroom or not but got lovely sarees.

Now was the time for Backwaters sunset in a shikhara. Trust me guys Shikara is much much better than a houseboat, you feel the waters in Shikhara, and we also enjoyed small canals, the experience was breathtaking.

We went to Royal park for Dinner and order fish fry, peas masala, egg masala and parotta and they all were delicious.

Day 5- Checked out of the hotel and reached Cochin airport in 2 hours, time to say final goodbye with heavy hearts, we would have cried, we loved Kerala that much.

The driver, the food, the views, the people, the hotels, the combined experience of them all made our journey really beautiful and unforgettable.

Kerala was quietly unknown region in the country until early 1980s where tourism development movement launched campaigns to market for the tourism and since then, the government has always supervised all the tourism hope for Kerala.

Tourism in Kerala has transformed itself into one of the most popular and comfortable tourist places in India. The slogan Kerala God’s Own Country is a global brand that is used to promote its tourism sector. Kerala is considered one of the places with the highest brand that attracted more than half a million of foreign visitors in the state in the year 2010. Wonderful journey to the Green Paradise of Kerala - Wayanad

Wayanad is a hill station in Kerala, which attracts a large number of local as well as foreign tourists. The chilling climate in Wayanad with its marvellous natural beauty makes it one of the best tourist attractions in God’s own Country and called as the green paradise of Kerala. Some of the major tourist attractions in Wayanad are Edakkal Caves, Chembra Peak , Lakkidi View Point , Kuruvadweep and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. I was on a budget trip and also wasn’t in a hurry to visit all the locations.

My Trip to Wayanad

We reached Wayanad in the evening. It was already getting dark, much sooner than other parts of Kerala . We stopped at Lakkidi Viewpoint, which is the gateway of Wayanad. Nearly 200 people were relaxing and enjoying the beauty of nature. We parked our bike on the side of the road where several other cars and bikes were parked. There was no proper parking area, so it was a bit dangerous to park the bike on the side of the road without much lighting. We were amazed to see the scenery from there. It was pretty dark and the view of fog slowing rising from the valleys to the top of the hills was an experience to remember forever. Everyone was busy clicking photos of the raising fog but I saw most people were complaining they couldn’t catch any proper pictures in the camera since the fog was covering all the views in the already dark valleys.

My friend didn’t want to leave the viewpoint but we had to move on. We didn’t have any reservation for the hotel, so we had to drive around and find a place to stay. The first hotel we noticed was Hotel Pepper Wayanad Gate, which is along the highway itself just 2 kilometers from the viewpoint. Even though we had seen good reviews of Pepper Wayanad Gate, we decided to skip it since it was beyond our budget. We reached Kalpetta , which is a small town but still active in the night. There were many hotels and we found one small hotel, which is close to the main junction and looked matching our budget. We walked into the reception and asked for a room. The guy in the reception stared at me as if I have come asking for a free room but showed me a few options. We took a double bed non-A/c room on the second floor. I was wondering who would need an A/c room in the chilling weather there. One good thing about such budget hotels is, they don’t charge anything extra for the rooms with good views. After all, most people coming into such hotels just need room to sleep at the best price and they don’t care for the views from the room. But we were lucky to get a room overlooking the hills. We opened the window and the view of mountains and valleys at far was really amazing.

We planned a trip of three days but later extended for one more day as we couldn't cover all the places on our itinerary. I'm not going to write more about the tourist spots we visited during the trip as I'm uploading images of the destinations we have visited and also including important information about the spot.

It was a fabulous trip and we enjoyed a lot. After several hours of driving, we both were tired and decided to sleep early after a quick dinner in the “thattukada” (country style restaurant) next to the hotel. Maybe because we were too hungry, the dosa and chutney tasted like the best food I have ever eaten! We had a chat with the hotel guy about the places to visit in Wayanad , other than the places we had already visited. He told about a list of activities to do in Wayanad including trekking, hiking, off road riding, camping and rafting. Also, gave the contact number of a company who arranges such activities for the tourists. Narendra Modi set a lofty goal for an election he hoped would send him to a legacy-defining third term as prime minister: winning a majority so staggering that his party would cement itself as the only plausible option to lead India for years to come.

To do that, his Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., aimed to expand on its deep support across the so-called cow belt in India’s populous north, while also making significant inroads in the country’s south, which has been more resistant to the party’s Hindu-nationalist agenda.

But little went according to plan for Mr. Modi when the election results arrived on Tuesday. His party did not just fall well short of its goal of winning more than 400 of the 543 parliamentary seats. It took such a steep dive — losing more than 60 seats — that it no longer had a majority in Parliament.

To stay in office, the powerful Mr. Modi is now forced to do something that does not come naturally to him: work with others, in a political coalition. That alliance, known as the National Democratic Alliance, or N.D.A., will face a reinvigorated political opposition, led by the Congress party, that significantly improved its performance since the previous election, in 2019.

The B.J.P.’s losses were sprinkled around the country, from Maharashtra in the west to West Bengal in the east. But Mr. Modi’s biggest setback came where it was least expected: the northern belt where his party was well entrenched and its Hindu-nationalist ideology had strong backing.

It appeared that some of Mr. Modi’s tactics had backfired in this region, perhaps because his party’s candidates there were seen as incumbents without much to offer after a decade in power. Those losses were offset in part however by gains in stretches of the south, where the B.J.P. — as a new entrant that has had little footprint there in the past — found better reception to its messages.

In Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest state, with a population of 240 million, the B.J.P. won just 33 seats, down from 62 in the previous election. It was in this Northern state that Mr. Modi in January inaugurated the lavish Ram temple, seen as one of his biggest offerings to his Hindu support base. But the B.J.P.’s chest-thumping over its Hindu-first policies turned off many lower-caste voters more concerned with issues like unemployment, inflation and social justice.

One of the biggest surprises was in the city of Ayodhya , the site of the Ram temple. The B.J.P. lost the seat in the city and other seats in its neighboring districts.

In the important state of Maharashtra, home to India’s business and entertainment capital, Mumbai, the B.J.P. won only nine seats, down from 23 in the last election. The party’s coalition partners suffered even worse losses.

The vote was seen as a verdict on the B.J.P.’s heavy-handed ways of reshaping the state’s political map. The B.J.P. had used pressure by government agencies and enticements of cash and power to split both of the state’s two largest parties. A faction within each of the two split parties then aligned with the B.J.P. The move backfired, however: In what was viewed as a sympathy vote, the original factions from the two parties outdid the B.J.P. allies by large margins.

The B.J.P. did have some good news: It continued to expand its support in the south, where it has struggled to establish a lasting foothold. In Andhra Pradesh, it formed a strong local alliance with two secular parties, and their coalition won 21 of 25 seats because of the unpopularity of the party in power in the state. It won a seat for the first time in the left-dominated state of Kerala and several seats in the state of Telangana.

The party’s most impressive gains came in the state of Odisha in the east. That state is part of the “tribal belt,” which weaves across central India and is the only part of the country where the B.J.P. has unified support. Its relatively poor communities have been skillfully targeted by the B.J.P.’s Hindu-first politics and welfare benefits .

But the party’s progress in eastern and southern India was far from enough to make up for its losses in the north. Now, with Mr. Modi deprived of the landslide victory he had sought, the country will see how he responds. Some of the strains in India’s democracy might be mended as Mr. Modi is forced to consult with coalition partners who could restrain his more authoritarian tendencies. Or he could crack down more fiercely than ever, worried about losing more ground to a revived opposition.
