Live your best retro #vanlife with this 1965 Streamline Travel Home with Vista Deck

Polished aluminum motorhome was the ultimate mid-sixties rv.

streamline travel car american rv

Combining the shiny aluminum look of a vintage Airstream and the California Zephyr , this 1965 Streamline Travel Home will give your nomadic #vanlife a huge injection of midcentury style. Surfaced by Barnfinds.com , this retro motorhome is up for auction right now on eBay Motors and is selling with no reserve.

The Travel Home was built by the Streamline Trailer company of El Monte, California, and Thornton, Indiana. The company, which dated from 1957, was mostly known for its travel trailers. Like them, the Travel Home features an aluminum exterior and gold anodized trim. The 30' Travel Home rides on a 193-inch wheelbase and is powered by a 330-cubic-inch Ford V8 paired with a three-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. The engine slurps from twin 30-gallon fuel tanks. Forced-air heating and air-conditioning see to occupants' comfort. The unit is self-contained with a toilet, tub, shower, and a 35-gallon holding tank. The fully-equipped kitchen has a fridge, range, and a double sink. Several floorplans were available, and this appears to be the Vista Deck center-dinette model. Besides the obvious party potential, the Vista Deck provided a location for the onboard 3,500-watt generator and dual butane tanks.

The Streamline Travel Home is said to have cost $17,950 new (before options), at a time when the median U.S. house price was just over $20k. But the median U.S. house couldn't hit the road, like the Streamline Travel Home. As the company boasted: "Fully self-contained, the Travel Home includes every feature found in a modern home," adding, "the Ford-powered Streamline Travel Home provides the ultimate in living-on-wheels."

Streamline lasted until 1974. In its time, there was a club for Streamline trailer and motorhome owners, called the Royal Rovers. Grab this Travel Home, and you, too, will be able to rove like 1960s royalty.

Hello you are looking at a Vintage Streamline travel trailer. The trailer has had some updates from the 70tys when it was manufactured. All the crummy cheap thin paneling was removed off the walls and was replaced with beautiful bead board and shiny rivets. The carpet was removed from the front and replaced with Brazilian Walnut wood. The old pluming was taken out and replaced with new. As you can see from the pictures it has a full shower and toilet as well as a kitchen. There is plenty of space for storage. I have just had the rims redone as well as all new tires tubes and flaps put on the trailer. The holding tanks were removed from the trailer before I purchased it. So it will have to have active supply. The main power cord was just updated as well. Keep in mind this is a vintage trailer it does have a couple of quarks. From the kitchen back to the bathroom there is vinyl flooring there is a couple of places in the kitchen where the fastener to the floor have come loose and the area no larger than a coke can bottom need to be repaired. This is a pretty jam up trailer. Any questions please contact. pictures http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/moores7/library/Streamline?sort=3&page=1

Sandy, Utah

Make Streamline (like Airstream

Amazing 1959 Streamline Trailer! Hurry!!! These are hard to find! 24 feet Long (Similar to an Airstream) So much on this I original which is rare! Have spent a lot of time working on this, but there are still more things that need work to be fully restored. Bought to restore and use but do not have time to use it, so we are letting someone else enjoy the work we have done. Spent weeks polishing the outside. New Vinyl Laminate Flooring, Newly painted inside and fixed trailer lights. The tires look older (so they might need replacing, but have a lot of tread. We pulled it 300 miles when we bought it and it pulled with no problems.) Equipped with twin beds, dining table that coverts into double bed, awesome original pink stove (We have not tested the propane system or turned the stove on) original light fixtures, cabinets, bathroom is original. The shower drain leaks out the bottom of the trailer might need plumbing work. There is a crack on the dining table but it is still functional, bottom of door handle is broken off but door still shuts fine, one light by bed hangs down needs to be tightened to stay up somehow, Has the original power cord and leveling jacks. Electricity works fine. Missing original roof vent covers (But it is water tight and sealed. Can purchase new roof vent covers at a trailer supply store) We have not noticed any leaks. Previous owner let this sit for 15 years with no use. Sold as is with no warranty. You might find other thing that need work that we are not aware of. This trailer is really cute and these are hard to come by! Must be able to pickup in Utah. No delivery available Hurry before it is gone!!! This trailer is so awesome. We are sad to see it go! Serious bidders only please. We have a possible buyer that might want to get this next weekend. 1968 STREAMLINE VINTAGE ALUMINUM TRAVEL TRAILER Empress RV

1968 STREAMLINE VINTAGE ALUMINUM TRAVEL TRAILER Empress RV

Logandale, Nevada

1968 STREAMLINE VINTAGE ALUMINUM TRAVEL TRAILER. Has as a Utah title & current registration. Clean and Clear Title is in hand. This trailer was a California Trailer all of its life. It belonged to my Father from San Diego. We towed it to Logandale Nevada (8 Hour Drive) with no problems what so ever. The front door is awesome and unique. It can be opened two ways. The tail lights all worked and the tires are in ok shape. I'm not sure if some of the stuff on the trailer works or not but I will let you know what I do know and have tested. The trailer has a few small dings but in overall condition its nice. Has an air conditioner but the motor needs new bearings. The Refrigerator works but needs replaced, its in poor cosmetic condition. It used to have an awning but needs a new one. The Toilet works but I would suggest a new one. The water tank is a 40 gallon. Some of the outlets work but some don't. The screens on the windows are very heavy duty but have darkened. It is a very desirable trailer with lots of potential. There have been no leaks from the roof what so ever but under one window looks like there may have been a small leak (see pics), the floors have been up graded but they are not that fancy, my Dad was a professional painter and had painted the inside two toned blue. All of the cabinets are riveted aluminum with wood doors that have a magnet that sticks to the roof for an easy in and out. The back counter is a white marble in excellent shape, the tub and insert are in excellent shape with no cracks or anything like that. The counter in the kitchen is a beautiful tan with gold speckles and the sink is tan and all is in very good shape. The stove appears really nice but not sure if it works. We do have the panel under stove. My Dad built in shelves in the two storage closets in between the Fridge. They are nice heavy duty well built shelves. The front is nice and open for your own recliners and furniture. Tons of storage space everywhere. There are many little things that most likely need to be re-stored or just worked on. I think its in great cosmetic condition as you can see in the pics. The enclosed part of the trailer is 27 Feet. The full length including bumper and tongue is 31 1/2 feet.Selling this Trailer "AS IS". It does need some re-storing. 435-660-1909 Call for any questionsLocated in Logandale, Nevada 89021 (30 miles North of Las Vegas). You will need to pick this up in person or send someone to pick it up for you.$500.00 paypal deposit with in 24 hours of end of auction is required. You may pay cash in person once picked up. If you are in the area, you are more than welcome to come look at the trailer and test what ever you would like.

Rare 1965 Streamline RV With Party Deck!

streamline travel car american rv

Originally selling for $17,950, about $146,101 in 2020 dollars, the Streamline Travel Home appealed to those with discerning tastes. According to the seller of this 1965 Streamline Travel Home in Oregon City, Oregon, the Streamline RVs catered to California movie stars as studio or location quarters. The interesting rear deck makes this specimen one of 25 built. This one’s certainly been buffed to an amazing shine, and while imperfect, it retains a nearly all-original appearance inside and out, and everything works, including the air conditioning! The listing here on eBay has attracted a handful of bids, raising its value beyond the $10,000 mark.

streamline travel car american rv

It’s easy to picture John Wayne or Cary Grant hanging out on the gleaming rear deck, Frank Sinatra playing on the radio, a smoke in one hand and a highball in the other, relaxing after a long day of filming or working through the next day’s script. “ I’m not gonna hit ya! …. The Hell I’m not!” It also looks like a fine place for your passengers to wave goodbye as you drive off on your next adventure.

The interior features fine upholstery and all the conveniences of home. An Onan generator provides power when electrical hookups are not available. Just like today’s RVs, a roof-mounted air conditioner takes the heat off. The booth folds into a bed.

The front Captain’s chairs become part of the conversation area by swiveling to face rearward, after you’re parked of course. It’s unclear which color are original, but even this mis-match is easier on the eyes than some ’60s color schemes. The listing does reference “UPDATED FABRICS AND MATERIALS.” (Yes, the listing comes rendered in ridiculous and painful ALL CAPS.) However, anyone wanting to implement a 21st Century color palette in this RV is completely missing the point.

Perhaps the finest looking chairs I’ve seen in an RV invite long hours of leisurely travel. This mobile apartment begs you to get as far apart from your worries as you want. This brilliant silver bullet becomes your personal oasis as you live out the illustrious words of the bards Metallica , “Where I lay my head is home.” Though not quite adorned with hand-crafted South American hardwoods, the Streamline Travel Home boasts far better appearance than many similar vehicles. Most RVs employ materials readily available at your local hardware store or mobile home outlet. “I’ll take 20 sheets of your cheapest plywood, 10 linear feet of Formica, and a giant roll of that contact paper that looks like wood grain from about 50 feet away.” Clearly the Streamline caters to those with more elegant taste. What movie star would you invite for a road-trip in this slick ’60s traveler?

correct Howard…looks like a Ford built chassis with hopefully FE power – dash is early Ford like they used on the chassis built vans.

I couldn’t read the spec sheet very well but I thought it said that it ran a 330 engine. That’s essentially a tall-deck, four-ring, truck/industrial engine. No speed demon but it will pull the hills with few problems. Just don’t get too determined to gain any decent fuel economy…

Sure looks like it, but I don’t think so.

As a car nut kid, I spent a lot of time in the late 60’s analyzing the ride characteristics of the same decade Ford school bus. This thing may look cool and be plush, but on the road it ain’t gonna be no picnic.

Speaking of The Duke. A little known fact. His huge luxury trailer that he used to take from movie set to movie set was actually bought by a Brazilian superfan called Beto Carrero after The Duke passed, and Beto, who used to live like real modern day cowboy. later opened the biggest theme park in Latin America and today, it has pride of place in a museum in the theme park.

I love it, don’t get me wrong, but a brick like that being called a “Streamline” is more than a bit hilarious.

Nice, but needs a little TLC, including missing horn, wiper arms and the Breakers needs to be changed out. FPE breakers are outlawed in Florida and other states, but not all, due to fire hazard. lots of holes need to be patched to keep rain out. Seen a little water damage, but minor. Bidding so far is only half way there so far, mostly because of it’s uniqueness.

Not a single photo of engine compartment, no information about what it runs for power. Gas or diesel, your guess? Genset looks very tired and due for failure. Some iffy wiring, and states, “Air conditioning turns on,” not whether it cools. Pass.

I spent 33 yrs at a huge RV dealer and never ran across one of these. A rare piece indeed. I can’t imagine going very far in it!

Bluetec320

Just because something is built in low numbers or “rare”, doesn’t necessarily mean that it should be desirable or valuable. That is my take on this RV. The exterior looks like a loaf of bread, the interior looks like it was built by a Bob Villa home builder apprentice, and the body sits on top of a Ford milk truck chassis. Thanks, but I’ll pass!!

streamline travel car american rv

It’s first impression is nice. That being said, the power description is a little light. If the motor is a diesel, minus a turbocharger, it would just barely be ok. However, if that motor is a normal gas one, there is just no way… on level roads and country it would be ok, but eventually it would have to climb a mountain. And if it is hot outside, the transmission is going to be under a real strain. Believe me I know… I took such a large vehicle (moving van) on a trip cross country during 100 degree weather. We drove up a few low mountains, the transmission overheated, an hour or two later it gave out completely and we had to be towed away. All I am saying that without a very large c.u. gas motor, which would still be marginal, or a diesel, there is just no way and if I were to have it the gas motor would have to be replaced. It is just embarrassing to crawl up hills at 25 mph with a mile of pissed-off drivers following and no turnouts to use.

ok, now I will look at the listing ans see if I have to eat my words. btw, I have a an early cummins single-turbo diesel truck with 400 lbs of torque. It is great on hills by itself of course, but if I was to tow like a 10,000 pound trailer uphill during the summer, even that would be lacking and a transmission c I ooler would be mandatory, using all synthetic fluids everywhere on it. Just my opinion based on expensive lessons already experienced. I could be wrong. Not to differ with an earlier poster, but to me, a 330 c.i. engine, nomatter how stout, is just not going to cut it unless it is a diesel and .or a turbo attached.

ok, with all that being said, I think it is a pretty cool rv. I would be apprehensive about the sins of previous owners in regarding to any renovations, and I am naturally suspicious of any vehicle that is for sale, like, why is it up for sale? or maybe I am just paranoid because I had to pay the price on previous such purchases…. mike

Love the party deck … had they not yet invented cloth awnings in 1965?

streamline travel car american rv

as cool as that looks …. solar oven comes to mind :)

They had em back in the 1800’s on railcars. Suppose they would have to be taken off or secured somehow while on the road though.

Ok, took a closer look. This rv is like picking up a hot girl on a date. At first, you are impressed with her looks, but after some time you notice her baggage and in the morning you can’t wait to take her back home to her 6 young kids living at home, a face that looks like roadkill without a ton of makeup, a hostile parolee x-husband living with her… you know the drill. And I hate all-caps ads with lots of exclamation points. And dozens of pictures with not a single one of the motor? The “luxurious” pink seats? It belongs on craigslist, where the potential fake “buyers” are even worse than the seller. No frigging way.

4504, LOL…. I like your analogy.

Party deck? There isn’t even room to sit back there. What’s in the box on the left rear deck? Generator or some other utilitarian thing? Looks like a speaker on the bottom of it. Tail lights look like from a school bus. Also what caught my eye is that rear red sidemarker light on the top right side. The red lens should be pointing to the rear not the front. Looks backwards. Like the overall design though. The rear “porch” is designed after a private railcar. Great design if you could actually have room to sit on it! Interior desperately needs some attention. I’d have it pimped out in some sort of victorian velvet curtains and woodwork myself. (like an 1800’s private railcar) That’s what I’m talkin about!

streamline travel car american rv

The whole point of this rig is the “Party Deck”, which is absolutely useless! There are propane tanks on the right hand side and the generator on the left hand side. That leaves maybe enough room in the middle for a folding lawn chair… but then you can’t open the door cause it swings out! It’s a pointless waste!

streamline travel car american rv

This is an amazing piece. Being able to drive it around is an added convenience and cost savings compared to a Streamliner without the engine. While everything looks dated, it is clean and everything works. The outside is clean and shiny and someone can really get some good use out of this vehicle.

like it better than the earlier trailer (dinner) AND still… cummins/allison, rip out the inside for a do over, spend any left over on gas for the nxt 10 yrs.

This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

Raymond c. frank helped usher in a new era for rvs..

When the subject of vintage RVs come up a lot of people will think of greats like the GMC Motorhome, an Airstream, or perhaps a classic Winnebago. There’s another gorgeous unit worth considering and remembering. The Travco/Dodge Motor Home Class A RV is a streamlined work of art designed by the man who brought the term motorhome into the modern vernacular.

Related Content

The Travco’s story dates back to 1958, when the owner of a trailer manufacturing company, Raymond C. Frank , came up with an idea to take his family to Florida. While there were travel trailers, truck chassis RVs and all sorts of “house cars” back then, Frank wanted to build his own take on what we know as a Class A motorhome today. And his would redefine the industry.

Image for article titled This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

Frank’s first camper build strayed from the norm of the era, Tin Can Tourists notes . It wasn’t just a trailer grafted onto the back of a truck and it wasn’t an ungainly house car. This vehicle was purpose-built to be a recreational vehicle. The one example built was called the Frank Motor Home.

Image for article titled This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

Frank took his Motor Home on the road, enjoying it for the very purpose that he built it for. Along the way, the RV proved to be popular with people lining up to get their own. But of course, it was the only one out there. Soon, Frank decided to put his Motor Home into production. He was able to make six units in 1960 from his trailer manufacturing business, but Frank soon looked for outside help.

To make this a reality, Tin Can Tourists notes , Frank tried to partner up with Chrysler for a chassis and drivetrain. Chrysler pointed him to a Dodge truck dealer run by Lloyd Bridges. In a deal penned between the two, Bridges would provide the bare truck chassis and also become one of Frank’s first dealerships. And in 1961, 131 Dodge Frank Motor Homes hit the road.

These first units were blocky aluminum and stayed that way until 1963, when Frank and his son would give the design an overhaul. In 1964, the Travco Corporation took over control from the Frank Motor Home Corporation, creating what was advertised back then as the Travco/Dodge Motor Home.

The white and green RV featured here is a 1975 Travco/Dodge Motor Home and it’s for sale!

Image for article titled This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

Its exterior has held up well for its age, with the fiberglass appearing to be in good condition.

These are more than just a fiberglass body dropped onto a Dodge M300 chassis. Inside, your Travco/Dodge Motor Home had a sofa that converted into a bunk bed. The windshield had a curtain for privacy and the RV even had a sewage incinerator system. Why dump your sewage tanks when you can just burn the crap?

Image for article titled This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

Power originally came from a Dodge 5.2-liter polysphere V8. This was advertised as making 202 HP with it delivered to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic. Newer Travcos like this one got a 7.2-liter V8 with 225 HP

The interior looks great. The seller says that it’s all original, too, save for the carpet.

Image for article titled This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

Travco — later incorporating as PRF Industries — saw more than just a recreational market for these vehicles, too. A few motorhomes ended up in commercial use as mobile banks, radio stations and promotional vehicles.

Image for article titled This Streamline RV Was Designed By The Man Who Coined The Term "Motorhome"

PRF Industries ran into roadblocks in the 1970s as the oil crisis hit. 1979 was the end of the M300 chassis, meaning that PRF no longer had something for the Travco/Dodge Motor Home to ride on. In the same year PRF sold Travco to Foretravel, who kept the body around until 1990. In all of that time, the RV’s exterior design stayed largely the same, with Travco giving it updates largely in the form of new front facias. Inside, there were floorplans that offered a palace for two and all of the way up to basically a bus for ten.

As for Frank, he went on to develop Xplorer Class B van campers. But his legacy is more. With his Motor Homes the house car became a thing of the past. In its place was the motorhome, and it helped spark advancement in how RVs are built that lasts to this day.

If you’re interested in a piece of RV history, that 1975 Travco/Dodge Motor Home will set you back $ 14,000 . And for another choice, the one in the top photo is for sale for $ 18,500 .

A Brief History

We found this trailer after someone had applied copious amounts of silicon to every exterior aluminum seam. Careful removal revealed a completely water-tight trailer, so we began with the interior restoration. The Crown was custom built by us in Ventura.

Two former Airstream designers split off to form Streamline in 1957 with the goal of building a better trailer. Built with a focus on luxury, they dubbed their trailers “The Aristocrats of the Highway!”

Streamline Travel Trailer

In the  1950’s , Silver Streak partners Kenny Neptune and Frank Polido bought fellow partner “Pat” Patterson out, and Pat went off on his own to produce the “Streamline” trailer. One common Streamline model name was the “Duchess”, and they also made a very unique early motor-home. The Streamline Trailer Company went out of business in early 1974.

I’ve learned the two partners of Streamline broke off from Airstream, and started Silver Streak, then one decided to use 3 rails foundation instead of just two to go on his own to create Streamline, with belly pan and more support. Some say the best made, but like a Ford, or Chevy man, that might be a personal concept. (Two plants were in production) lifetime warranty, was upheld by the placements of parts in a warehouse in Elkhart, Indiana, supposedly. It was thought the CA plant had a higher grade of aluminum, so these tend to polish up better.

The Streamline Travel Home (motorhome) became the Newell, and lives today.

What I have noticed is that it does not have a window next to the entry door like some of the other models. I have only seen one other Regency model online. [email protected]

The most striking feature is the gold stripe and trim on the streamliner, can be seen from a distance to be what it is [email protected]

Standard Features

As opposed to Airstream & many other trailers, the Streamline (at least the 66 model) did not come with a power inverter for the 12 volt systems. Came with 2 separate systems, 1 ac & 1 dc. Most of the light fixtures have 2 separate lights & switches, 1 for each system. Trailer battery is charged by the tow vehicle when hooked to it. Just purchased a 59 Streamline Regency and would like to know the worth .

Unique features/Options

The pre-70s Streamlines, at least, were designed with Light Weight in mind. The designers knew that a lighter trailer meant better gas mileage for the owner’s tow vehicle. The cabinets are made of aluminum frames, with verticals and crossmembers bent in ways and riveted together, to create the cabinets, make them structurally strong, yet very light. They are designed in a manner to make the cabinets somewhat Modular, meaning they can be rearranged, moved around in different configurations, as long as you find a way to enclose end walls. They also are pop riveted onto the wall originally, so can be removed from the trailer initially, then screwed back onto the walls with screws. The famous “three rail frame” that distinguished the Streamlines, is partly true! The 2 heavy steel C beams that comprise the two outside most frame rails, go all the way from the front, where they are curved and bent in to form the tongue. The center rail is actually not solid– it is made of I beam sections and a tubular section– but the center beam ends at the wheel well box frame. The entire frame after the wheel wells, is the two outside frame rails only I know all this because I am renovating a 64 Countess. It got all new floor and is being rewired with updated wiring for a converter, more DC and AC outlets, and ultimately, Solar panels on the roof. The aluminum cabinets are beautiful things, very light and I intend to keep those. BTW a Countess is 26 foot overall but only weighs 3500 pounds as originally equipped! A similar 26 foot trailer manufactured today will weigh anyplace from 5000 to 7000 pounds. Quite a difference. [email protected]
