What people love about Diving Tours

I loved every bit of this trip in Thailand. Everyone was wonderful, too. Made friends from all over the world that will last forever. Definitely will be back in Thailand. Our guide Paige from Intro was amazing. She was funny & caring. Even after the Intro tour, the scuba diving trainers from SimpleLife were amazing, too. They were very detailed on our 20 safety skill test. Everyone felt anxious when we first started, but at the end we felt confident & comfortable in case if anything happened. There is always room for improvement with more dive, we will get better. The only reason why I took out a star was because of the cost. Be aware you are only getting like 8 meals throughout the 13 days & may pay a bit for the transportation. It would be reasonable to have at least one meal a day.
Go For It! A truly amazing Active Adventure!
It was an excellent experience. Some ideas for improvement are to provide times re: departures and provide possible side trips that can be booked upon arrival. We had a free day in Amman and ended up booking a driver but would have preferred to book with you (if I had known the day was free). We loved the extra day on the yacht to go snorkelling but could have had more time I either Wadi Rum or Petra.

#1 Tour in Ventura On TripAdvisor

As usual, the Captain and crew took care of us from the moment we stepped on the boat. The Captain found the best possible dive sites given the day's conditions. The crew kept things running smoothly, and jumped to help passengers sometimes before we knew we needed it. And of course the food was as tasty as ever. Another fun day of diving on the Spectre. I will definitely be back!

Fantastic outfit. Easy to use website for booking, big + comfortable boat, boat and equipment are in great shape, boat crew are super competent and friendly, the cook somehow conjures up tasty breakfast and lunch from a tiny galley… and the dive sites are beautiful. Go!

Top notch crew and boat! Dive sites were well chosen and effortlessly organized. Dive briefing was full of great and useful information. I will be recommending to all my dive buddies! Hot tub - need I say more?

Always goes to the best available dive locations. Every year when we make the trip out from Colorado to dive from the Spectre the boat always shows upgrades. Very clean, organized, and well managed. Food is delicious with generous portions. Good air fills and ready to dive at each dive site. We saw octopus, sea lion, Seals, and even a Mola Mola. Fantastic trip and a great way to spen three days diving.

Planning a Scuba Diving Trip: The Complete Guide

diving tour

Whether you’re looking forward to a weekend getaway to your nearest coast or a once-in-a-lifetime vacation on the other side of the world, careful planning is the key to a successful scuba diving trip. Follow our simple steps to ensure that you choose the destination that best suits your experience and interests and ensure that everything runs smoothly once you get there.

Choosing Where to Go

We all know how important location is for every kind of adventure, and underwater ones are no exception. There are many different factors to consider when choosing your next diving destination .

First, consider your budget. How much are you willing to spend traveling to your vacation spot, and what’s the cost of day-to-day living in the destination? For example, flights to Thailand from the United States are more expensive than a quick jaunt down to the Caribbean. Still, accommodation, food, dive equipment rentals, boat charters, and dive courses are considerably cheaper. For this reason, be sure to consider every expense when making a decision based on cost.

Next, decide how long you want to spend on your next diving adventure. If the answer is just a few days, that obviously limits your options no matter the size of your budget. When you can take time off is also important. If you are restricted to a certain time of year, you’ll want to look at the dive destinations that offer the best weather and water conditions at that time. Many popular locations (especially tropical ones) are very seasonal when it comes to prime diving time.

Dive Conditions

If your options haven’t already been narrowed down by budget and timing, the next factor to consider is the kind of diving you would like to do. Do you prefer balmy water temperatures and crystal clear visibility for underwater photography ? Are you aching to try your hand at ice diving? Altitude diving? Or maybe you want to explore historic wrecks? Certain bucket-list marine animals are only found in specific locations. The type of diving that you want to do will impact your destination options. Your skill level can also affect your options. Some dive destinations are notorious for deep dive sites and strong currents, making them off-limits to beginner divers.

Specific Dive Destinations

Need some inspiration? We've rounded up some of the best dive destinations for specific interests.

Beginner Diving

  • Florida Keys , U.S.: The Florida Keys stand out for the beginner-friendly conditions (including warm water temperatures, great visibility, and limited current) and abundance of rewarding shallow sites perfect for open water training.
  • Koh Tao , Thailand: Koh Tao is also well-suited to beginner divers in forgiving conditions and a wealth of shallow yet beautiful dive sites. It also has many dive centers to choose from and some of the cheapest rates in the world for entry-level scuba courses.
  • Cozumel, Mexico: Cozumel spoils beginner divers with various dive sites within the required depth limit, all of them teeming with marine life. Courses are affordable, and there are also more challenging sites for those that want to progress onto an advanced course.

Wreck Diving

  • Chuuk Lagoon, Micronesia: This lagoon was used as a Japanese naval base during World War II. In 1943, Operation Hailstone was launched by Americans, sending more than 50 ships and 250 planes to a watery grave.
  • Graveyard of the Atlantic, U.S.: This stretch of treacherous North Carolina coastline is named for the more than 1,000 shipwrecks found between Currituck Beach and Cape Fear.
  • Coron Bay, Philippines: Coron Bay is the site of another sunken Japanese supply fleet sent to the bottom during a bombing attack in 1944.

Shark Diving

  • Tiger Beach, The Bahamas: Tiger Beach is a famous underwater amphitheater defined by its white sand floor, crystal clear visibility, and up-close shark encounters. Top species include tiger sharks, giant hammerheads, and Caribbean reef sharks.
  • Aliwal Shoal, South Africa: Enjoy baited shark dives with oceanic blacktip sharks, with other species (ranging from duskies to bull sharks and great whites) often coming to visit. Sandtiger sharks are spotted on the reef in the winter months.
  • Beqa Lagoon, Fiji: Beqa Lagoon is home to eight different shark species. It is most famous for close encounters with super-sized bull sharks, many of which gather to gestate in the lagoon's warm, clear waters.

Muck Diving

  • Mabul, Malaysia: This dive destination off the coast of Borneo famous for its muck diving opportunities. Expect an astonishing variety of macro critters, from ribbon eels and mandarin fish to tiny pygmy seahorses.
  • Lembeh, Indonesia: This is a renowned macro photographer's destination, thanks to its black volcanic sand, which provides the perfect backdrop for many colorful macro species.

Temperate Diving

  • Silfra Fissure, Iceland: Located in Thingvellir National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Silfra Fissure is the place to visit if you've ever wanted to dive between two tectonic plates in the world's clearest glacial meltwater.
  • Channel Islands , U.S.: This national park offers fantastic opportunities for boat-based diving amongst giant kelp forests, where cold-water species including sea lions and bat rays thrive.
  • Scapa Flow, Scotland: This is the ultimate wreck-diving destination for drysuit divers. At the end of the First World War, 74 German naval ships were intentionally scuttled here to prevent them from passing into British hands.

Planning and Preparing for Your Trip

Once you have decided on your dream destination, there are many elements to consider in the planning phase. First are the practicalities: How are you going to get there? If you’ll be flying, is there an airline that stands out for its generous luggage allowance (so that you can pack more scuba gear without worrying about overweight fees)? If driving is possible, how long will it take? Will you need to plan overnight stops along the way? Do you need any special paperwork for border crossings?

The next step is to book your accommodation. It often makes sense to choose a hotel with an attached dive center or a hotel that offers a shuttle service to a nearby dive shop. Alternatively, consider combining your diving and sleeping even more seamlessly with a liveaboard dive trip . These are particularly popular (and often quite economical) in Egypt, Thailand, and The Bahamas. You’ll be able to fit in more dive time and can enjoy the luxury of living, dining, and sleeping on the boat in between underwater sessions.

If you plan to take your own gear with you, you’ll need to make sure that everything is working properly. That means checking the seals and valves on your buoyancy control device (BCD), ensuring your low-pressure inflator hose connects securely, having your regulators serviced, and checking the straps on your mask and fins. Taking a camera with you? Charge your batteries, grease your O-rings, and be sure there’s plenty of space on the memory card. If you plan on renting equipment, make sure you know where you’ll be renting from and consider booking the correct sizes in advance.

Lastly, don’t forget the paperwork. In addition to flight tickets, proof of accommodation, and proof of transfer reservations, be sure to check whether you need a visa for your destination. Do this well in advance because although some countries allow you to purchase a visa on arrival, others may require you to apply at an embassy or consulate in your home country. Some destinations (especially those within a national park or marine protected area) also require you to purchase a dive permit, while others require proof of certain vaccinations.

Choosing a Tour Company or Dive Center

Unless you have all of your own gear, a buddy to dive with, sufficient knowledge of your intended dive site, and a way to get to it independently, you’re going to need the services of a dive center, liveaboard, or dedicated diving tour company. Choose the right one, and you should be able to arrange dive courses, fun dives, equipment rental, and transport as required. But how do you know which is the best one for you?

The first step is usually to narrow centers down to those affiliated with your chosen training organization (i.e., PADI, SSI, NAUI, or one of the other main programs). This is true whether you’re already certified or planning to become so. This way, you can be sure that your qualification will be accepted and that the instructors and/or dive guides dive according to the practices you’re familiar with. Next, compare pricing, availability for your chosen dates, and the diversity of courses, dive sites, and specialty diving experiences offered.

Finally, it’s an excellent idea to check out the experience of previous guests by reading reviews. That way, you’ll be able to read up-to-date opinions on crucial elements such as customer service (including the competency of the center’s instructors, the knowledge and enthusiasm of its dive guides, and the friendliness of its shop-based staff). You’ll also be able to find out more about the quality of the dive gear available to rent, how convenient the shop is for reaching the dive sites, and more.

What to Pack

Your packing list and precise clothing requirements will depend on your destination's topside weather and underwater conditions. Nevertheless, here’s our comprehensive overview of the essentials that you should consider for every trip. Remember that if you don’t have your own scuba gear, you will need to investigate where, how, and how much it costs to rent on arrival.

  • Passport or identification
  • Wallet or purse with cash and credit cards
  • Dive certification card
  • Diving logbook
  • Dive computer
  • Mask and snorkel
  • Weight belt or integrated pockets
  • Weights (if traveling locally)

  • Surface marker buoy/delayed surface marker buoy and reel (for drift diving)
  • Primary and backup torches (for night diving)
  • Underwater camera, including strobes, housing, battery charger, and cables
  • Marine life identification book
  • Mesh bag for wet gear
  • Warm clothing
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Clothing for other activities/going out
  • Beach towel
  • Comfortable shoes

Important Safety Considerations

A scuba diving trip should be memorable for all the right reasons, which is why it’s important to consider your safety both on land and in the water.

  • Once you have chosen a dive destination, be sure to check with your doctor whether you will require any vaccinations. For some countries, proof of certain vaccinations is an entry requirement; it’s simply the sensible thing to do for others. If you’re headed to a malaria area , enquire about the safest prophylactics to use while diving.
  • For mosquito-borne diseases that can’t be medicated against, wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing is the best way to avoid infection. You should also determine whether the local tap water is safe to drink and if any specific foods are best avoided. Don’t forget to stock up on any prescription medications and to carry a doctor’s letter to prevent any issues at customs. If you have any preexisting or temporary medical conditions that could affect your ability to dive safely, make sure to get a doctor’s written approval to dive before departure.
  • Before you book your trip, check whether there are any travel advisories in place for your destination. These are issued for everything from health concerns to terrorism and often warn against regions or cities that are particularly unsafe. Always book accommodation in a safe neighborhood, keep your cash in several different, well-concealed stashes, and make copies of your passport and visa before traveling.
  • Travel insurance is essential, as is checking that your policy covers you for diving specifically. Look at taking out insurance with the Divers Alert Network (DAN) for the most comprehensive coverage. Other diving-related safety precautions include enrolling in a refresher course to ensure that life-saving skills (from gear maintenance to safe ascent rates and air supply management) are foremost in your mind.

Why Laguna Beach?

Laguna Beach boasts a diverse ocean biodiversity due to the convergence of the cold California Current with the warmer waters of the southern Pacific Ocean, creating a rich marine environment. This mixing of currents leads to frequent upwelling events that bring nutrient-rich waters to the surface, supporting a thriving ecosystem of marine plants and animals. The varied underwater landscapes, including kelp forests, rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and intertidal zones, offer a range of habitats for a wide array of species to flourish. Furthermore, the presence of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along the coast, such as the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve and the Crystal Cove State Marine Conservation Area, ensures the preservation of critical habitats and contributes significantly to the area's exceptional ocean biodiversity.

More Than Just A Shark Tour

Some guests join the charter to gain more knowledge on sharks, marine life, and our research program without getting in the water. The charter is very informational in the hopes that all guests learn something new. Sharks can be seen from the boat on the surface of the water and even though some may be nervous about getting in the water, we strongly encourage it and promise the view is much better from below the surface. Most ride-alongs end up getting in the water once they see all the fun that’s being had in the water. Our professionally trained safety divers/biologists will be the first in the water and the last out of the water for your shark snorkel experience. The safety divers on our team are trained extensively by some of the most accomplished divers in the world with experience in working with large marine animals, including sharks. Once in the water with your safety diver, you can hold onto the line that extends along the boat for your convenience. The line makes it easier to view the surrounding sharks and wildlife that may appear on your dive. When your safety diver is ready, they will invite you off the line to swim and dive freely with respect to your comfort and swimming ability. All guests can exit the water at any time if needed to take a break from the shark snorkel. Our Captain on board the boat will help however possible if needed by the guest. Once the charter is over, our guides will provide information about your dive, conservation updates, what our company is doing to aid in conservation efforts, and any new data specific to the research currently being conducted. This is an excellent time for any questions to be asked so they can be answered by our experienced biologists. When on the boat heading to and from the harbor, we are always on the lookout for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life. (**Seeing other marine life besides sharks is not something that is guaranteed**) We hope that all guests leave our charter with a newfound love and respect for our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them. About One Ocean Diving

Marine research, shark and marine conservation, shark education.

The One Ocean Diving Pelagic Program was established as a collaborative research initiative to gather data for four current marine animal studies. Marine biologist Ocean Ramsey, who has international recognition, adapted the program to support shark conservation efforts and to provide funding for ongoing shark studies.

Initially focused on "Mano" or sharks, the program has expanded to include Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, also known as Honu, and Humpback whales. Click on the tab below for more information about our research endeavors.

We aim to raise awareness on the significance of safeguarding marine creatures and inspire individuals worldwide to speak up and take action for these incredible species! Our approach involves educating people through various channels, such as our personal dives, social media, school presentations, and collaborating with individuals and groups globally to promote their research and conservation endeavors via @oneoceanglobal.

Our mission is to foster and motivate a strong bond between humans and our shark friends by promoting their conservation in our oceans and marine ecosystems. With our dives, you'll discover the biology of sharks and their behavior, along with the impact of human actions on their survival. Click the "LEARN MORE" button below to explore our conservation page, where you can join hands with the local conservation community and learn about the various threats that plague our ocean and marine life. Billionaire plans to take submersible to Titanic nearly one year after OceanGate implosion

diving tour

Nearly one year after the OceanGate Titan submersible disaster gripped the nation, another ambitious businessman is looking to make the same trip.

Larry Connor, an Ohio businessman and billionaire , told The Wall Street Journal last week about his plans to prove that a dive to the Titanic wreckage site can be done safely when proper engineering is employed.

Shortly after news broke in June 2023 of the Titan's suspected implosion, Connor called up Triton Submarine's CEO Patrick Lahey, who had publicly criticized OceanGate's safety practices and called its CEO "predatory," and insisted they could and should make something better.

“[Connor said], you know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption,’” Lahey told The Wall Street Journal.

Connor and Triton Subs did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Here's what we know so far about the newest Titanic-bound submersible.

Who is Larry Connor?

Larry Connor is an entrepreneur and founder of The Connor Group , a luxury real estate company based in Dayton, Ohio. His net worth is $2 billion, according to  Forbes , while Connor Group’s real estate portfolio is worth $5 billion.

Connor is a known explorer, having previously voyaged to the  Mariana Trench  and  International Space Station , told news outlets he wants to prove that a deep-sea submersible can be made safely and such a trip can be done "without disaster."

“I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way,” Connor told The Wall Street Journal.

The date of the intended dive has not yet been announced.

Triton Submarines' $20 million submersible

Connor told the Wall Street Journal he would be working with Triton Submarines, a company that builds submersibles for sea exploration at various depths.

The trip will use the Triton 4000/2 "Abyss Explorer." With a $20 million price tag, the two-person craft is described on the Triton website as “the world’s deepest diving acrylic sub," boasting the ability to descend over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters).

Lahey, the CEO, co-founded Triton with the now-retired Bruce Jones, the former of whom plans to accompany Connor on his mission, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“Patrick has been thinking about and designing this for over a decade," Connor told the outlet. "But we didn’t have the materials and technology. You couldn’t have built this sub five years ago.”

What happened to the OceanGate Titan submersible?

On June 18, 2023, five people boarded a submersible created by the company OceanGate to visit the Titanic wreckage site 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) under the water.

This was OceanGate Expeditions' third annual voyage to the site, and each passenger paid $250,000 for the opportunity to view the wreckage, according to an archived itinerary of the mission.

Aboard the submersible was British businessman Hamish Harding; Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, members of one of Pakistan's most prominent families; French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet; and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

The vessel was heavily scrutinized before departure for its design, made of carbon fiber and titanium and measured in at about 9 feet high, 8 feet tall, and 22 feet wide. The craft was said to have been piloted with a video game controller .

The submersible was not up to the task and imploded on its way down to the ocean floor. Communication between the Titan and its mothership stopped about 90 minutes into the trip. It is assumed the destruction of the vessel happened soon after.

A massive rescue mission ensued . Ultimately, The Titan's debris were found in five large parts on the sea floor about 1,600 feet from the Titanic's bow and the passengers were declared officially lost on June 22. Some human remains were later recovered.

Rory McIlroy vs. Scottie Scheffler Memorial Tournament Matchup Betting Pick

Iain macmillan | jun 5, 2024.

PGA Tour players Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy greet each other as Jon Rahm looks on as they all prepare to tee off at the tenth hole during the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn., on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

We're less than 24 hours away from the opening tee shot at the 2024 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

If you want to bet on the event, I broke down everything you need to know to do so, including my best bets, in my full betting preview here . In this article, we're going to dive a little bit deeper into the two best golfers teeing it up this week, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

In case you didn't know, there are a plethora of ways you can bet on a PGA Tour event. One of those is betting on which of two golfers will finish higher on the leaderboard. The best of those matchups bets this week pits Scheffler against McIlroy.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Rory McIlroy odds

Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook

  • Scottie Scheffler -200
  • Rory McIlroy +160

Scheffler enters the Memorial Tournament as the -200 favorite to finish with a lower score than McIlroy. If you translate those odds to implied probability, he has a 66.67% chance of beating McIlroy.

Are those odds fair?

In my opinion, they are. In fact, there could be some betting value on Scheffler in this matchup. I have his odds of beating McIlroy closer to 70%. We have to remember Scheffler has finished worse than T10 just once in 2024, in what was a T17 finishing at The American Express in January.

Now, he returns to a course that he's experienced some success at the past few seasons. Despite not yet winning, he finished third here in both 2023 and 2021. McIlroy, on the other hand, has never finished inside the top three at this event, with his best finish being a T4 back in 2016.

While there's no debating how good of a season McIlroy is having, Scheffler has just been on a different level. The No. 1-ranked golfer in the world is gaining +2.842 total strokes on the field per round this season while the Northern Irishman is gaining +1.723. That's a difference of +1.119 strokes per round in favor of Scheffler.

To put that in perspective, the difference between Scheffler and McIlroy is the same as the difference between McIlroy and Ben Silverman, who ranks 42nd on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained per round this season.

Would you bet on McIlroy at -200 against Silverman this tournament? If so, then you should feel just as comfortable betting -200 odds on Scheffler against McIlroy.

Pick: Scheffler -200

Deep dive into tea culture of laoshan mountain.

A Date with China international media tour visits the Laoshan Mountain in Qingdao, East China's Shandong province, to explore the tea culture on June 6, 2024. (Photo/chinadaily.com.cn)

A group of China-based foreign correspondents and social media influencers paid a visit to the Laoshan Mountain in Qingdao, East China's Shandong province on Thursday, to embark on a unique journey of tea culture.

The delegation didn't just tour the tea plantations; they engaged in hands-on tea picking, joined the production procedures, and fostered meaningful dialogues with indigenous tea craftsmen.

Gloria Agapiti Michael Meiseyeki, a journalist from Tanzania, said they usually drink black tea in her country, and she wants to try green tea here.

Nataliia Liublinskaia, a journalist from Russia, wanted to bring some green tea back to her family, and said this was her first time seeing tea trees, "I used to think that tea trees were taller, but I didn't expect them to be this short."

Luke Johnston, a British online content creator, said he started drinking more tea in China and found that there are wide varieties, such as green tea, Pu'er tea, and Longjing tea.

Laoshan tea is known as the most famous tea in the north of the Yangtze River. At present, the planting area of Laoshan tea is about 20,000 acres, with an annual output of over 1,500 tons and a value of over 600 million yuan ($82.82 million).
