Best and Worst Times to Cruise the Caribbean

The best time to cruise in the Caribbean depends on personal preferences for weather, prices and crowds.

But some months are better than others, especially late winter, spring and early summer when temperatures are warm and the risk of rain is low.

For the most part, the best time to cruise the Caribbean is January through April during the dry season, especially in April when temperatures are warmer. The worst time is September and October during the peak months of the Caribbean hurricane season.

May is a brief rainy season for some destinations. December is popular because of families on winter break from schools. March as well as June through August are popular with families on spring and summer breaks. June is the best time to cruise the Caribbean in the summer because it has a lower risk of rain than July or August.

The weather is a major factor because rainfall is often quite heavy in the Caribbean during certain times of the year.

It is especially true during the Caribbean hurricane season , which lasts from the beginning of June to the end of November. During that period, total rainfall rises until it reaches a high point in September and October.

As a result, both months are the least popular times of the year to vacation in the Caribbean. June and November are the least risky months during the hurricane season because they usually have the fewest tropical storms and hurricanes.

Winter temperatures are a factor to consider. People who love beaches may find that winter in the Caribbean brings cooler seawater, especially in more northern destinations such as the Bahamas.

During the summer, people who don’t like humidity and temperatures higher than 90 degrees Fahrenheit will find some destinations uncomfortably hot. They include Cozumel and Grand Cayman.

The most popular times to cruise, such as spring break and summer break from schools, usually have higher cruise prices and more crowded cruise ports. Couples or singles without families should avoid those times.

Each cruise season during the year has a different combination of weather, prices and crowds.

Winter Cruises

Many destinations experience a high point of tourism from December through February because of people fleeing the northern winters. But that period also has the lowest average temperatures for the Caribbean, especially in the islands lying closest to the United States.

The Bahamas, which technically are in the Atlantic rather than the Caribbean, remain popular because they are easy to reach from the U.S. They are also a common stop for Caribbean cruises and a popular golf destination.

But they also have the lowest temperatures of any islands in the Caribbean region. Seawater is usually too chilly for swimming.

Southern Caribbean cruises are a good choice during the winter. They reach the destinations with the warmest temperatures, such as Aruba, Curacao, Panama, Costa Rica, and Cartagena Colombia.

Many of them embark from San Juan Puerto Rico.

Western cruises also become popular in the later part of winter because they go to places that usually have a dry season combined with warmer temperatures. They include Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Roatan, Costa Maya and Belize.

Recommendation: Early winter cruises are best for people who want to escape winters but worst for people who want warm temperatures for swimming. Late winter cruises are best for the western Caribbean.

Spring Cruises

As the weather gets warmer, eastern Caribbean cruises start to become a better choice. Many eastern cruises begin in Florida and include the Bahamas as a port of call. The Bahamas and the nearby Turks and Caicos islands are among the coolest in the region during the winter.

The Bahamas have average high temperatures in the upper 70s Fahrenheit or mid 20s Celsius from January through March. Nassau is still a good one-day stop for its attractions, but a Bahamas-only cruise is not a good choice during this time of year for beach goers.

Other destinations do better, especially in late spring. Popular cruise islands such as St. Maarten have average high temperatures rise into the upper 80s Fahrenheit or more than 30 degrees Celsius.

Recommendation: Early spring is still best for warmth in the western and southern Caribbean. Late spring is a better time for eastern cruise visitors who like spending time on the beach and in the water.

Summer Cruises

The words “summer cruise in the Caribbean” may bring visions of warm weather and frollicking in the waves. But it’s also a time of high heat and humidity for some islands as well as increasing rainfall for others.

Aruba, Cozumel, Grand Cayman and St. Thomas often have average high temperatures of more than 90 degrees during the day. The heat can make time on the beaches or shopping in the cruise ports uncomfortably hot. Recreational land activities on arid islands such as Aruba are even more uncomfortable.

Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos have milder temperatures.

Summer also is a popular time to cruise for families because children have a summer break from school. The risk of rainfall rises as the summer advances, so anyone planning a cruise will find that early summer has a lower chance of rain in many destinations than later summer.

Recommendation: Summer cruises are best for people who love heat and worst for people who like moderate humidity and temperatures. Early summer is better than late summer when average rainfall starts to climb.

Fall Cruises

Cruise activity takes a big drop in September during the most active month of the hurricane season. It then begins to climb in October and November as weather becomes colder up north and average rainfall begins to lessen.

Many destinations still have above average rainfall during October and November, which makes late fall a risky time to cruise. Anyone who considers going during the late fall may find that cruise prices are lower than average because of lower demand.

It also is a good time of year to look for a last-minute cruise deal if the seven- or 10-day weather forecast shows a low chance of rain.

Recommendation: Fall cruises are best for people looking for great deals but the worst time for rain.

You’ve finally landed on the cruise you want to take—maybe it’s a winter expedition to Norway to see the northern lights or perhaps you’re keen on sailing around the Galápagos to see the islands’ impossibly curious animals—but now the question is, when should you book? Is it better to secure reservations far in advance or do you stand a better chance of snagging a deal if you wait?

We polled travel advisors who specialize in cruises to better understand when the best time to book a cruise is. Here’s what they had to say.

When is the best time to book a cruise?

While there’s not necessarily a wrong time to book a cruise, there are time frames where travelers can benefit from discounts and promotions.

Beyond holiday periods such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday , and Labor Day when there may be some flash sales, January and February are particularly good times to book a cruise , as the first two months of the year are considered “wave season” in the cruising industry. It’s when companies are looking to base load their ships for the year.

“Wave season is when cruise lines announce incredible promotions in an effort to sell as much unsold space for the year as possible,” explains Jeremy Hall, a travel advisor at Cruise Vacations International.

Those promotions could include free stateroom upgrades, highly reduced cruise fares, discounts on deposits, free sailings for children, complimentary airfare, and discounted beverage packages, among other offers.

The best wave season cruise deals for 2024

AmaWaterways : River cruisers can save up to $2,000 per stateroom and earn $50 in onboard credit per stateroom on select 7- to 11-night European river sailings in July and August 2024 (including a 7-night Colors of Provence cruise, a wine-themed Burgundy sailing, and a Rhine castles and Swiss Alps cruise). For 14-night European river cruises (such as the Grand Danuba sailing) during the same period, travelers can save $4,000 per stateroom and receive $100 in onboard credit.

Aurora Expeditions : Environmentally friendly expedition operator Aurora Expeditions is offering a slew of savings on sailings to the Arctic and Antarctic in 2024 and 2025, including up to 25 percent off some itineraries and air credit on others. The savings are available on bookings made before March 31, 2024. Here’s our recent review of sailing with Aurora in the Arctic.

Azamara : Travelers can save up to $2,000 per stateroom on select 2024 sailings when booked before March 21.

Celebrity Cruises : Until February 1, cruisers can save 75 percent on their second guest’s cruise fare (specifically for nonrefundable cruises; otherwise it’s 50 percent off) for sailings from now until April 30, 2026.

Cruise Croatia: Passengers can enjoy up to 30 percent off on more than 25 departures along the Dalmatian Coast between May and October for bookings made through January 31.

Crystal Cruises : The newly relaunched luxury line Crystal is offering complimentary suite upgrades on select 2024 sailings booked before the end of January.

Emerald Cruises : Savings on this accessible luxury river cruise line include two-for-one fares and up to $3,750 off per suite on select Europe and Southeast Asia river cruise sailings. Bookings must be made by March 31.

Explora Journeys : On the recently launched cruise line Explora Journeys, passengers can save up to 40 percent on their trip when they book either an Ocean Terrace Suite or Ocean Grand Terrace Suite for sailings on Explora I (we were among the first onboard this brand-new vessel, which aims to court noncruisers ) and Explora II by January 31. The deal is applicable for sailings through April 2026. Some available trips include the 44-night A Grand Journey Connecting Continents and the 10-night A Celestial Caribbean and Creole Soul .

Holland America Line : Cruisers can save up to 40 percent on bookings made by February 29. Bonus deals include up to $500 per stateroom for onboard spending (depending on cruise length), free fares for kids, and stateroom upgrades.

Hurtigruten : From now until the end of March, cruisers can get up to $4,000 off select voyages within Norway.

HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) : For select bookings made by March 31, 2024, for departures between March 29, 2024, and March 29, 2025, HX is offering flight credits of up to $2,000.

Lindblad Expeditions : Until March 31, guests can save up to $2,000 on cabin fare and up to 40 percent on solo cabins. Here’s what recently sailing around Svalbard with Lindblad entailed.

MSC Cruises : One of the largest cruise lines in the world is offering a sale to kick off the new year. Guests who book during wave season also receive Wi-Fi for up to two devices per stateroom and up to $400 in onboard credit. Kids sail free. The deal applies to sailings in the Caribbean and North America, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Southern Caribbean through winter 2025.

Oceania’s 1,200-passenger Vista launched in 2023 and offers some of the best fine dining at sea, plus impressive solo cabins and immersive port excursions.

Oceania Cruises : On these fine-dining–focused cruises , you can get up to 50 percent off per stateroom on 112 sailings in 2024 and 2025 if you book before the end of February.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises : Through February 29, ultra-luxury line Regent Seven Seas is offering an Upgrade Your Horizon promotion that gives guests a free two-category suite upgrade (up to a Penthouse Suite) on select cruises departing between now and June 2026. This past November, Regent unveiled the latest “world’s most luxurious cruise ship”: the 750-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and exclusive art pieces.

Scenic Luxury Cruises : On Scenic’s river cruises, guests who book by March 31 can get up to $4,250 off per suite, a promotion that can be combined with Scenic’s 2-for-1 fares on 31 departures in 2024. For ocean sailings (including expedition-style cruises to Antarctica, Greenland, and Australia’s Kimberley region), guests can book 2-for-1 fares and receive up to an additional $13,000 off per suite. The discounted fares are available on more than 60 sailings in 2024 and 2025.

Seabourn : For both ocean and expedition voyages booked by January 31, guests sailing on Seabourn’s super-luxurious cruise ships can save up to 25 percent off fares and receive up to $1,000 in shipboard credit per stateroom. Maybe this is your sign to book Seabourn’s epic 90-day Africa itinerary , which will stop in 44 ports in 26 countries as it circumnavigates the continent.

Sea Cloud Cruises : For select sailings booked before February 29, cruisers can save 25 percent on the fare and receive $500 in onboard credits.

Silversea Cruises : Luxe line Silversea is offering savings of $4,000 per suite on door-to-door all-inclusive fares (which even includes pre- and post-cruise private transfers and airfare) or $2,000 per suite on port-to-port all-inclusive fares for bookings made through February 29.

Star Clippers : On select sailings aboard the Star Clipper or the Star Flyer, cruisers will receive $240 in air credits per person and $200 in onboard credits per cabin. The deals are good for bookings made by March 31.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises: Cruisers can save up to $3,000 when they purchase cruise and airfare together on select 2024 itineraries with this boutique luxury line. This offer is valid on new bookings made through January 31 for travel in 2024.

Viking : Viking is offering special fares (with just a $25 deposit) on new bookings across its collection of river, ocean, and expedition offerings through January 31. Select voyages include free airfare.

Virgin Voyages : Through January 31, cruisers can get 70 percent off the second guest’s booking. They will also receive up to $600 off their bar tab, depending on the length of the voyage. Virgin Voyages—which launched its newest ship, the 2,770-passenger Resilient Lady , in 2023—bills itself as the perfect cruise line for people who don’t like cruises. Here’s our take .

Windstar Cruises : Book a Windstar sailing by February 29 and you can choose an additional perk, which could include a free night in a hotel (pre- or post-cruise) or up to $1,000 in onboard credit. Those who book a premium suite can upgrade to the all-inclusive fare, which includes alcohol, Wi-Fi, and gratuities. Our suggestion? Sail the Mediterranean with Windstar this winter , when there are fewer crowds and no extreme heat.

How far in advance should you book a cruise? Is it better to book early?

Travelers who are less concerned about deals and more focused on a specific destination or making sure they get choice accommodations may want to take a different approach to booking a cruise. Cruise companies open up bookings for sailings as early as two years in advance. While that might sound like plenty of time to mull over sailings, William Kiburz, a travel advisor at Coronet Travel , says the earlier you book, the better, especially when it comes to expedition-style or specialized cruises, as well as sailings to Alaska , as those are itineraries that often sell out more than a year in advance.

Samantha Robichaud, a travel advisor and owner of Fabulous Adventures Travel Company , says that booking early also means travelers have more choices when it comes to travel dates, staterooms, specialty dining reservations at preferred times, and shore excursions.

Todd Smith, owner of AdventureSmith Explorations , says that if you want to go on an expedition cruise, which typically involves a smaller ship, it’s imperative to book early.

“ Booking last minute also means you get what remains available instead of the best trip, ship, cabin, and program for you,” Smith says.

Another reason to try to book early: The cabin price is usually lower. “Cruise fares tend to rise as the time before departure draws closer,” Hall says. “Even though you may see a new promotion announced for the cruise you booked six months ago, chances are you got a better deal because the cruise fare more than likely went up before that new promotion was announced.”

There are often perks for guests who book early. For example, Holland America Line offers an early booking bonus that allows guests to enjoy all the benefits of the standard “Have It All” package, including shore excursion and specialty dining credit, plus included gratuity, a low-price guarantee, and upgrades to premium Wi-Fi and an “elite” beverage package, which covers all premium spirits, beers, and wines.

Is it possible to score last-minute cruise deals?

If pricing is more important than preferred accommodations, travelers can opt to wait until closer to the departure date to see if they can take advantage of any last-minute offers . It’s a bit of a gamble—you risk the ship selling out. And, in the 11th hour, flights to the port might be more expensive.

To find deals, travelers can sign up for email newsletters from various cruise lines, as the companies often send out updates on flash sales. You can also search the cruise line websites—some, like Holland America , have pages on their website dedicated to last-minute deals.

Hall says that his company typically sees more last-minute deals with river cruises than ocean cruises. He also notes that last-minute deals usually involve added amenities or a waived single supplement.

Will working with a travel advisor get me a better deal?

“There are so many ways to get a good deal on a cruise, and nobody knows better than an experienced travel advisor ,” Hall says. “There are so many promotions, amenities, loyalty programs, and pricing structures these days—it makes finding the best deal a daunting task. Your travel advisor will know precisely how to narrow down the search field to find the right cruise and deal for you.”

Robichaud echoes that sentiment, saying that travel advisors can leverage relationships with cruise companies to get discounted rates or free add-ons. And Smith notes that agencies that book a lot of cruises often receive free upgrades for their clients as an incentive from cruise lines aiming to build up a loyal network of travel advisors who sell and book their cruises.

Are there better times for families or groups to book a cruise?

Only certain ships and expeditions offer accommodations large enough to fit three or four people, so groups and families looking to stay in the same cabin should book as soon as possible because options may be limited.

As Robichaud notes, rooms that can accommodate more people tend to fill up fast during holidays and school breaks; if travelers have a specific sailing in mind, it’s essential to book early.

Judy Perl, president of Judy Perl Travel, adds that for parents looking to travel around school schedules, it’s worth noting that spring break is often the cheapest for cruising, and summer break offers more destination options. The winter holiday season is always significantly more expensive, she says.

How to bid on a cabin upgrade

Just as some airlines offer the opportunity to bid for a business- or first-class seat upgrade , many cruise companies offer travelers the opportunity to bid on stateroom upgrades.

• Some cruise lines will email confirmed customers before their voyage, offering them the chance to bid on a higher class of cabin at a steeply discounted price.
• Travelers suggest a price they’re comfortable with spending.
• If the cruise company accepts the offer, guests will be charged the amount of their bid and receive an updated booking with their new room details.

Robichaud says she just got back from a Virgin Voyages sailing where she was supposed to have a Sea Terrace stateroom but won her bid for a Mega RockStar suite (complete with daily spa access, a bottomless in-room bar, a personal butler, and access to a members-only sundeck). Similarly, some companies have dedicated landing pages on their websites where guests can bid.

When bidding for an upgrade online, be aware that you can’t cancel your bid once accepted (but you can cancel or change the offer before acceptance).

Upgrades are also available after you’ve boarded the ship. Perl recommends that people keen on a larger room go to the purser’s office and inquire if there have been any cancellations or no-shows. “Once the ship leaves the dock, typically, it is no longer under revenue management control back at headquarters,” Perl explains. “The ship can make their own pricing decisions about what to charge to maximize the yield on their available inventory.”

What’s worth it and what isn’t in terms of cruise add-ons?

Amenity add-ons, like beverage packages, onboard credit, Wi-Fi, laundry service, and included gratuities, only have a value if you are going to use them. A person who drinks only one glass of wine each day or someone who likes to disconnect from tech on vacation may find little worth in an unlimited drinks package or premium Wi-Fi, respectively. It’s important to know the value of these items for you and purchase accordingly.

Best for short summer escapes: 3- to 5-night Carnival cruises

Carnival Cruise Line is an industry leader in short getaway cruises from local departure ports. You can sail to the Bahamas from Florida ports; Bermuda from Manhattan in New York; the Caribbean from Galveston, Texas , and New Orleans; and the Mexican Riviera from Long Beach, California. Each of these destinations promises beaches, water sports and land-based activities that range from cooking classes to all-terrain-vehicle rides.

Most Carnival ships feature top-deck waterslides and miniature golf, plus Seuss at Sea character parades, storytime and themed breakfasts. The Cloud Nine Spa and adults-only Serenity Retreat give adults a quiet place to relax, whether you cruise with kids or without. Carnival is known for having multiple included food venues like Guy's Burger Joint , Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que and the Mexican BlueIguana Cantina.

Best for grown-up fun: Virgin Voyages to the Mediterranean

Virgin Voyages deploys ships to multiple European destinations, all loaded with summer fun grown-up style. Choices range from seven- to 12-night Mediterranean adventures (think: round-trip cruises from Barcelona featuring ports of call like Cannes in France or Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza in Spain, where ships often stay overnight, allowing time for a night of clubbing European style). Longer cruises include one-way routes between Barcelona and Rome, adding Italian ports like Florence and Naples. The line also takes in the Greek islands on cruises originating in Athens (Piraeus).

Virgin's adults-only ships carry 2,770 passengers (known on board as "sailors"), all 18 or older. The line claims to offer the ideal cruise for adults who don't care for cruises. Entertainment on board includes pajama parties and immersive naughty nightclub performances. Virgin ships focus on wellness with a techno fitness studio , an outdoor gym and a boxing ring.

Dining choices are where Virgin Voyages really breaks from traditional cruise lines. All 20 eateries on board are included in the cruise fare, and you won't find even one buffet line.

Best for solo cruisers: Greek island cruises on Windstar

What better way to sail among the Greek islands than on a gorgeous ship with sails or an intimate yachtlike ship where you never feel like just another number? Windstar Cruises offers summer cruises in the Greek islands, stopping at dream destinations like Santorini, Mykonos and Patmos. Port activities in the Mediterranean lean toward cultural and culinary interests.

What moves the needle toward Windstar for solo cruisers is its standard single supplement of 175%, which dips even lower on occasion. That's quite a cruise budget bonus when most cruise lines charge 200% of the fare for cruising solo.

All Windstar ships carry just over 300 passengers or fewer. You'll feel like you're cruising the Mediterranean on a private yacht. Solo cruisers will find it easy to meet fellow passengers — mixing and mingling are a normal occurrence for almost everyone on such small ships.

The main dining room (Amphora) features solo-friendly open seating each evening. I once met an 82-year-old woman cruising alone on back-to-back Windstar cruises. She had no shortage of invitations to join tables at mealtimes, but when she opted to dine alone, the staff treated her like a queen.

As the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, Windstar goes above and beyond when it comes to serving amazing food. Menus for both Amphora and a pop-up steak restaurant called Candles are highlighted by selections from James Beard Award-winning chefs — all included in the cruise fare.

Those same chefs are sometimes hosted on the line's special James Beard Foundation cruises. Besides hanging out with these amazing chefs (because they are there to enjoy the cruise, too), guests can go shopping with them as they prepare for menu takeovers using locally sourced ingredients. It's foodie heaven.

Best Alaska cruise: Weeklong Holland America cruises

Alaska sits at the top of many summer cruise wish lists. Sometimes it's a beat-the-heat plan. Most often, it's the desire to see the glaciers and wildlife in Alaskan waters and along its shores. You have lots of options for Alaska cruises, but we recommend the tried and true.

Holland America has been cruising in Alaska for more than 75 years and has more itineraries visiting Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) than any other cruise line. You can feel confident that any Alaska cruise you book with the line will be done well.

Holland America ships carry between 2,000 and 3,000 passengers. While the passengers on other itineraries tend to be a mostly adult (and often senior) crowd, that changes during the summer season in Alaska. Families with children of all ages are welcomed and catered to with youth programs on board, including a Junior Ranger program in Glacier Bay.

Options include round trips from Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle , as well as one-way trips between Vancouver and Anchorage, Alaska. Add-on pre- and post-cruise land tours are a Holland America staple for those wishing to explore inland Alaska.

Best for families with teens: Weeklong Caribbean cruises on Royal Caribbean

Finding a cruise itinerary that pleases teens and preteens can be challenging. The megaships Royal Caribbean sails in the Caribbean fit the bill nicely. Look for the line's biggest ships cruising from Miami , Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Galveston.

Most itineraries alternate between Eastern and Western Caribbean routes , all with beachy ports of call with plenty of water sports and land-based adventure options. Many itineraries also visit the teen-pleasing private island destination Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. It's an island playground with beaches, a pool, sand sports and a water park seemingly designed with easily bored teens in mind.

The ships themselves, however, are likely to be the real stars of the cruise for your teens. These ships carry close to 6,000 passengers and come loaded with waterslides, surf simulators, zip lines and rock-climbing walls. Teens ages 13 to 17 have a hangout space all their own, and the preteens have loads of age-appropriate activities to keep them on the go when the ship is not in port.

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships are family-pleasing masterpieces, cruising on sunny itineraries that make for incredible summer vacations.

Best for families with littles: Short Bahamas cruises on Disney Cruise Line

Putting smiles on little faces is the mission behind any Disney cruise, and if the littles are smiling, moms and dads probably are, too. Disney sails short cruises from multiple ports. Look for summer cruises to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral with stops at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay . Three to five nights is ideal for kids in the 4 to 7 age group — and their parents.

Disney Cruise Line cabins are designed with families in mind. They have split bathrooms (toilet in one, shower-bath in the other), privacy curtains for napping and plenty of storage.

Besides the fun onboard character encounters, water attractions and live musicals based on favorite movies, Disney cruise ships offer the most kid-friendly menus of any cruise line. Plus, 24-hour in-room dining is complimentary — perfect when the need for a quieter meal arises.

Best for a cooler European vacation: Scandinavia cruises on Viking

If you're looking for a European getaway where the weather isn't as hot as in the Mediterranean, Scandinavia is calling your name. You can cool down while experiencing the summer beauty of the Norwegian fjords and the cultural delights of Denmark and Sweden. If you're an older adult, Viking has your cruise.

In fact, Viking has multiple options. Cruise lengths range from seven to 28 nights, with a long list of possible ports of call, including Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen; and the Norwegian ports of Bergen, Stavanger and Honningsvag (in the far north). And don't forget Iceland. Viking offers seven-night circumnavigation cruises of the land of fire and ice, as well as longer sailings that include Reykjavik as a port of call.

Viking ships carry just 930 passengers, all in cabins with private balconies. The ships feature seven dining options, all included in the cruise fare. Beer, wine and soft drinks are complimentary during lunch and dinner, and at least one tour is also complimentary in each port of call. Viking is an adults-only cruise line, so all guests must be 18 or older — though its loyal fans tend to be retirees.

Viking ships make seeing the incredible sights of Scandinavia not only possible but comfortable. At the end of a day ashore — sometimes spent on excursions skimming across the waters of fjords in rigid inflatable boats or exploring tiny fishing villages near, or even above, the Arctic Circle — you'll return to relax in one of the best complimentary thermal suites at sea. If that's not enough, you'll also dine on extraordinary cuisine without worrying about extra costs.

Looking for a cheap cruise? We’re talking really inexpensive — cheaper than many flat-panel TVs and less expensive than a new couch. In other words, cruises so cheap that it’s more affordable to take a vacation than to be a couch potato.

The great thing about cruising is that there is something for everyone, from luxury lovers to penny-pinchers. You can go first-class if you want, paying up for things like suite cabins, alcohol packages, and excursions — or you can also spend just a little and still have a great vacation.

The good news is deals aren’t hard to find if you know where to look. In fact, there can be so many that you might have trouble whittling down your options.

How to Find Cheap Cruises

First and foremost — to start your hunt for cheap cruises, we always recommend visiting a third-party cruise booking site like Cruise Critic, Expedia, Orbitz, or others.

When you start your search, you have tons of different options. You can go straight to a cruise line’s website to find deals. However, when you do that you are limiting your search only to trips on that company’s cruises. Unless you’re an avid fan of one cruise line, this isn’t the best way to plan your voyage, since it gives you only a small sliver of what’s out there.

On the “aggregator” travel sites you can set up search parameters for all the cruise lines at once, then sort by price, departure port, date and more. That’s why we like to start our search on these sorts of websites. It gives you all your options instead of just one line.

Beyond that, there are a few other simple tips for cruise fans shopping for dirt-cheap fares.

While we have a full list of rules on getting the best deal on a cruise , the easiest way to find an inexpensive trip is to keep these things in mind:

• Look for shorter cruises (shorter = cheaper)
• Sail when school is in session (off-season means lower fares)
• Book an inside cabin (balconies are more expensive)
• Sail aboard an older ship (older ships have cheaper fares)

These four factors will have the largest impact on what you pay for a cruise .

Cruises Under $200 Per Person

Yes, it’s possible to take a cruise for under $200 per person. We’ve found cruises on several different lines offering inside cabin rates that cost less than most monthly car payments.

4-Night MSC Bahamas Cruise | September 12, 2024 | $199

Want to take a break… but don’t have time to leave for a week or more? This cruise is only three days, but will get you out into some of the most beautiful water in the world. And at less than $200, it’s a steal.

MSC Seashore will sail a 3-night round trip cruise departing Port Canaveral on September 12. The ship will visit Nassau, then call at MSC’s Ocean Cay Marine Reserve in the Bahamas. It’s a quick trip, but if you want an easy getaway and don’t want to break the bank, this is a great option.

4-Night MSC Bahamas Cruise | March 29, 2024 | $169

When it comes to the least expensive cruises, we found the most options from MSC Cruises . This cruise aboard the MSC Magnifica sets sail in late March for three nights.

The trip will take you to Key West for a day to visit one of the most popular cruise ports of call in the world. From there, you’ll head to MSC’s private island Ocean Cay for a stay. 

We’ve personally spent time on Ocean Cay. and if you are a fan of electric blue water and white-sand beaches, you can’t go wrong spending time on the island.

4-Night Carnival Bahamas Cruise | December 2, 2024 | $189

If you love Carnival and just need to get on a ship, then this cruise might be for you. It’s a four-night cruise from the popular line that comes in at less than $200 per person for cruise fare.

This particular sailing departs December 2, but there are more dates are available throughout the year. It departs Miami, spends a day at sea, followed by a visit to the Princess Cays (Carnival’s private destination), and then on to Nassau before heading home.

As with some other cheap cruises on our list, this trip sails an older ship. Still, the Carnival Conquest has been updated and boasts many of Carnival’s popular bars and eateries including Guy’s Burger Joint, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Cantina, as well as an Alchemy Bar and Punchliner Comedy Club.

4-Night Carnival Mexico Cruise | December 15, 2024 | $184 

The absolute least expensive Carnival cruise we could find? It’s this one for just $184 — a vacation for about the cost of a pair of fancy sneakers (though port fees and taxes add about $120 per person).

This particular sailing leaves on December 15, 2024. Departing Los Angeles, it heads to sea for a day, then it’s a day in port at Catalina Island. Following that, it’s a stop in Ensenada,. Mexico before returning to Los Angeles the following morning. 

At just four days, it’s a short cruise with just enough time to find your way around the ship before it’s time to leave. That said, it comes with an unbelievably low price tag.

Cruises Under $300 Per Person

Spending slightly more than $200 per person can give you a few more choices – including slightly longer voyages, and visits to different destinations. Here’s a list of some of the great options you can find in the $200-$300 per person range.

4-Night Royal Caribbean Mexico Cruise | September 26, 2024 | $290

You can find plenty of affordable cruise choices for sailing out of Galveston. That’s because there are a number of short sailings from the island, and the fewer days on the ship, the less you’ll pay.

This 4-night voyage aboard Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas departs September 26 and features two blissful sea days, with a stop in Cozumel in between. If you’re looking to simply get out of town and want some time at sea, this trip fits the bill. It will give you plenty of time to relax (and work on your tan) on the ship, as well as some time exploring the beautiful Mexican Riviera.

3-Night Royal Caribbean Bahamas Cruise | November 1, 2024 | $270

You might start to see a trend that many of the cheapest cruises on our list have a common feature of departing from Florida and heading over on a short trip to the Bahamas. This trip aboard Royal Caribbean fits that bill as well.

This sailing aboard the Liberty of the Seas will take you from Fort Lauderdale over to Nassau, followed by a trip to CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island . CocoCay has set the bar in cruise line private islands and can’t be missed.

It’s a quick trip, but will pack in a lot of fun for not a lot of money.

5-Night Carnival Caribbean Cruise | December 2, 2024 | $294

You can book a 5-night Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Freedom sailing out of Port Canaveral for as little as $294. Yes, there are less expensive five-night cruises from the line ( some as little as $209 per person ), but the combination of ship and itinerary is tough to beat.

The voyage departs on December 2, and includes a day at sea, followed by visits to Grand Turk and Amber Cove , then another sea day before returning to Port Canaveral.

Although the Carnival Freedom is one of the fleet’s older ships, it has been refurbished to offer lots of Carnival favorites. It has one of the cruise line’s trademark WaterWorks waterparks and the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat, along with all the well-known food experiences Carnival fans love – including Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina.

6-Night Royal Caribbean Pacific Coast Cruise | September 22, 2024 | $227

When we searched for dirt-cheap cruises, we never dreamed we’d find something this inexpensive.

This is a six-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas for only $227 per person in cruise fare (of course, taxes and fees will increase the price). That’s a price that’s normally found on three-day cruises. It’s among the cheapest longer trips we’ve ever seen. The catch? It’s a repositioning cruise, meaning it’s one-way.

The cruise departs Vancouver, Canada, headed to Los Angeles. During the trip, there are stops in Victoria, San Francisco, and Catalina Island — three beautiful ports that shouldn’t be missed.

Cruises Under $500 Per Person

Going up slightly in price while remaining within the budget-cruise range can get you a slightly longer cruise time, which means more port visits, and/or longer port stays.

6-Night Royal Caribbean Western Caribbean Cruise | September 8, 2024 | $491

Outside of Florida, Galveston is one of the biggest cruise hubs in the country. It’s also within driving distance for tens of millions of people, saving on the cost of flying to Miami or Orlando.

In fact, with the introduction of a third cruise terminal, the island is now also home to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships — the largest on the planet.

Harmony of the Seas is one of those ships. This cruise aboard Harmony is dirt-cheap, especially for the ability to sail on one of these massive vessels with tons to do. The cruise leaves and heads south to Costa Maya, Roatan, and Cozumel.

In addition, you have two days at sea to enjoy all the ship has to offer before you have to go back to the real world.

7-Night Royal Caribbean Alaska Cruise | May 13, 2024 | $448

Compared to Caribbean cruises, Alaskan trips are usually more expensive. You can save money by sailing early in the season (May) or late in the season (September). This trip is a great example. It allows you to sail to Alaska for under $500 per person in cruise fare. That’s a dirt-cheap price.

The sailing aboard Quantum of the Seas departs Seattle to head up to Alaska. You’ll stop in Sitka, Skagway, cruise the Endicott Arm, then stop in Juneau and Victoria. 

If you’ve ever had an Alaskan cruise on your bucket list, this trip is an opportunity to experience the amazing landscape without it costing a fortune.

8-Night Carnival Caribbean Cruise | October 5, 2024 | $499

Treat yourself to more than a full week of cruising — including some incredibly desirable ports of call — for less than $500 with this wonderfully inexpensive cruise. Besides the departure port , the cruise itinerary or the best time to actually book your cruise , it i important when you are taking your cruise. Setting sail on a cruise at the wrong time could mean that you won’t get to enjoy the weather you expected or the activities that you wanted.

On the flip side of that, it could be that you actually want to take a cruise to a destination that is out of cruising season as you want to take advantage of a cheaper cruise deal. Whatever your intentions, knowing what the destinations will be like on the dates of your cruise is important.

Knowing the right time to cruise can be confusing at times, as different regions have different seasons and therefore what works for one might not work for another. Here we break down all the information you need to ensure that you’re cruising at the most optimal time for you.

Is there really a right time to cruise?

Factors to consider while deciding when to cruise, who is going on the cruise, consider the destination, avoid weather extremes on your cruise, the right time to cruise is all dependent on you.

There isn’t one rule determining the best time to cruise for everyone. Instead there is only the right time to cruise for you. This is going to depend on your desire and what you want to get out of your cruise. There are also key aspects such as budget that you have to consider.

Every destination is going to have a high season and an off season. There is usually a solid reason for that and it’s a good idea to check what that reason is before you book. If you book without full information, then you might be left with a poor cruise experience.

There are other considerations that you have to take into account when booking your cruise such as who is going on the cruise. Sometimes you have to keep in mind key dates such as the national holidays and school holidays, with the likes of spring break being very popular. 

Also if you have small children or health issues, then you will be even more concerned by somewhere that is going to be blisteringly hot or incredibly cold. It’s worth talking all these aspects into consideration in order to book a cruise that is going to be ideal for you and everyone you’re going with.

There are many wonderful destinations that you can visit on cruise ships but traveling at the right time of year is extremely important. The best time to visit can change for a variety of reasons but sometimes you can get good deals at an off peak time.

Here we will go through each cruise region and see when the peak season is and when there is likely to be fewer travelers. We will also look into the reasons for it to see if it’s worth taking the risk in order to take advantage of lower cruise prices. 

Pretty much all regions in the world will have a peak season and an off season. While there is usually a reason that most people travel at one particular time, there are usually great deals to be had if you decide to travel in the quieter months. Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of traveling in different regions at different times of the year.

Peak :  With Alaska being so far north, there are two key reasons why you would prefer an  Alaska cruise  in the summer months, firstly is that it is going to be warmer but also that there will be a lot more sunlight. The average temperature in July is 72°F and it’s best to travel from May through August.

Off peak : On the northern tip of Alaska, they don’t see the sun for just over two months and there it will have an average of -8°F in January, rising to just above 20°F in the more southern areas. So unless you don’t mind the extreme cold, Alaska needs to be visited in the summer.

Peak : In the more northern parts of  Asia  such as Japan, temperatures are fairly stable all year around. In South East Asia though, the colder months are actually the best time to travel as it will still be very warm but without the negatives that can come from their summer.

Off peak : It’s not just the heat that can be suffocating in the South Asian summer but it’s also the humidity too as it is often incredibly high. All that heat can also lead to one big problem, monsoons. The rainy season can see incredible downpours, but feel free to take your chances for a great cruise deal.

Peak : If you wanted to  cruise the Caribbean , then it’s best to do it between December and April. It is an incredibly popular cruise region primarily because there a lot of magnificent destinations just within a short distance. It also has fantastic weather and you will get to enjoy white sand beaches in a beautiful climate. 

Off peak : A Caribbean cruise in the off season can mean the potential of hurricanes, which is generally worse in the Eastern Caribbean than in the Western Caribbean. This could mean cancelled stops at certain cruise ports and rough seas. If you want to take the chance of missing a hurricane though then you will be able to see those amazing destinations for a lot cheaper.

Peak :  The Galapagos Islands  tend to have an explosion of wildlife at the start of the year which can make it hugely popular with lovers of nature and animals. The temperature is also perfect at that time of year which makes it a very popular destination.

Off peak : During the off season in the Galapagos, there is a higher probability of rain, but this isn’t going to be much of a hindrance. This shouldn’t stop you from visiting many of the great sites to see on the island and therefore it’s one of the best destinations for year-round cruising.

Peak : The peak season for  Hawaii cruising  is in the summer when people love to get away but also the winter when people are looking to escape to a warm destination and away from the cold of home. There isn’t any other reason as to why it is so popular during these times.

Off peak : Due to those reasons, there really isn’t a negative of traveling to Hawaii in the shoulder season of either spring or fall, as it’s just simply an issue of timing. The islands are noticeably quieter at these times which is what a lot of people prefer. 

Mediterranean/Southern Europe

Peak : There are many wonderful destinations in this region and it is warmer in the winter than in other parts of Europe. There is still a significant temperature difference though, which is why people mainly flock to the Mediterranean in the summer months.

Off peak : Temperatures are still decent in the winter, which makes it a good option for those looking for a cheaper cruise. The history and culture of the region is still there even when it’s a bit colder and therefore it makes sense to go off peak even though temperatures do start to cool in September and October.

Peak :  Mexico  is a very large country but generally there is a big difference between the dry season and the rainy season. Obviously the peak season is when it is dry and you will be able to enjoy the great warm weather and wonderful activities such as diving. 

Off peak : If you don’t mind the rain, then traveling during the off peak season can come with a cheaper price. There is also the chance of hurricanes which makes traveling off peak more risky, especially between August and October when it’s usually at its worst.

Middle East

Peak :  The Middle East  is one of the few cruise destinations when summer is not the best time to go. The average temperature in Dubai, for example, is 97°F in August and it can get a lot hotter than that. This is why the vast majority of people prefer to go in the winter.

Off peak : Whether or not you would like to travel in the off peak season is up to you as people handle temperatures differently. For most people being in 100°F heat is insufferable and therefore would not be able to explore this cruise destination in comfort. 

Northern Europe/Baltics

Peak : The summer months in Northern Europe and the Baltics  can be quite pleasant. They often have good temperatures where you’re going to be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and rich history in a nice and comfortable climate.

Off peak : This is in stark contrast to the winter months though, which can be quite brutal with temperatures often going below freezing. That’s why the peak season is quite short, as it’s hard to enjoy yourself when the cold weather bites and therefore it’s usually best to travel in July and August. 

Oceana (Australia/New Zealand)

Peak : Australia is a huge continent and the temperature can vary quite a lot between different cities. It can get very hot in the summer in places but in general the best time to visit is going to be in the summer, especially in New Zealand which is further south.

Off peak : Southern  Australia and New Zealand  can get quite chilly in the winter and that’s why there is a significant off peak season. Unlike a region like the Baltics, however, this is still comfortably above freezing and therefore manageable if you don’t mind wearing a coat.

South America

Peak :  South America  is not only a large continent but it is also very long. In the north the temperature remains hot pretty much all year around but this changes as you go further south. This is why the best time to visit is in their summer months.

Off peak : In the southern regions, the temperature can fall below freezing in the winter months. This makes it unpleasant for most people but for those that are willing to cope with those temperatures, great bargains will definitely be available.

South Sea Islands

Peak : The winter months in  the South Sea Islands  are generally the best time to go as the temperature will be nice and pleasant and it is also going to be quite dry too. This makes them great to visit as you’ll be able to enjoy their beauty without any limitations.

Off peak : In the summer months the islands will get incredibly hot and humid too. That can be too much for some people but the hot weather also brings the rain which can ruin what would otherwise be a great cruise.

Hurricane season

As we have seen here, while some destinations are good to travel to during off peak seasons, others can be a bit riskier. The hurricane season in the Atlantic basin is technically from June to November but it really peaks between the middle of August and the middle of October.

It’s extremely rare that you would find yourself in the middle of a hurricane at sea but it can cause huge disruptions to cruise ports, destinations and flights too. Hurricanes move slowly but if a big one comes anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea, then it can ruin a vacation. In spite of this the majority of cruise lines still operate during this season.

Monsoon season

A monsoon is not as deadly as a hurricane but it can still cause huge disruptions to your cruise destinations. In Southeast Asia the rainy season is between May and November with the most likely time for monsoons happening between August and October.

Extreme heat

There are plenty of cruise destinations that can get incredibly hot where temperatures will often go above 100°F in the summer months. For most people this is going to be too much and needs to be avoided.

Extreme cold

Sometimes people will actively seek out cold adventures in Alaska and Antarctica among others. However, visiting these destinations in the winter will see brutally cold temperatures. This applies to Northern Europe and the Baltics too where temperatures will often go well below freezing.

Clearly there is no perfect time to cruise as everyone is different. However, there are some cruise destinations that come with a big warning, as their weather can get wild. Some people will desperately want to avoid this whereas others will happily take the risk.

The holiday season may have come and gone, but "wave season" is officially here.

Yes, the unofficial period where cruise lines offers great deals on cruises across the world and across brands from budget-friendly options to over-the-top luxury is underway. Discounts on the price of a cabin, include perks like beverage packages or complimentary upgrades, and even offer onboard credits passengers can use for anything from shore excursions to onboard bingo.

“With demand continuing to rise for cruising and travelers actively planning their 2024 vacations, Wave Season is the perfect time to get a great deal on a cruise before prices increase,” Suzanne Salas, the SVP of marketing and e-commerce at MSC Cruises USA, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “[Our] Wave Season deal is our way of inviting travelers to try our amazing, innovative ships and enjoy the unique and memorable experience MSC Cruises has to offer, while giving loyal guests a fantastic way to save on their next cruise.”

Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement wave season is when cruise lines “put together our best offer with the most requested benefits and amenities.”

From MSC and Holland America to Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Princess Cruises, and beyond, there are plenty of great reasons to plan a future cruise vacation this wave season — and save in the process.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises is offering 75 percent off a second guest with a non-refundable deposit, or 50 percent off a second guest with a refundable deposit. The sale also includes up to an additional $200 savings per stateroom on select dates. This promotion is valid on most cruises through April 30, 2026. Book by April 7

Cunard’s “Treat Yourself, On Us” promotion offers guests up to an $800 per stateroom onboard credit. Travelers who book a “Grills Suite” will receive a complimentary drinks package and hotel and dining service charges. The promotion is available on many 2024 and 2025 voyages across the world from Alaska and the Mediterranean to Canada, Australia, and beyond. Book by March 27

Holland America Line

Holland America is offering free stateroom upgrades, free fares for kids, and fare discounts up to 40 percent off for travelers who book a “Have It All” premium cruise package. The promotion is available for select cruises for summer 2024 to spring 2025. Travelers who book by Jan. 31, will also receive an onboard credit worth up to $500 per stateroom, depending on the length of the cruise. Book by Feb. 29.

MSC Cruises

Travelers who book an MSC cruise during the promotion will receive an “Easy Plus” drink package, Wi-Fi for up to two devices per stateroom, free fares for kids, and up to $400 in an onboard credit, depending on which stateroom they choose. The promotion, which starts at just $279 per cruise, is available for sailings in the Caribbean, North America, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe through the end of the winter 2024/2025 season. Book by Jan. 15

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises has savings on select 2024, 2025, and 2026 cruises, offering up to 40 percent off fares around the world. The company is also offering complimentary upgrades between like-to-like stateroom types and free fares for third and fourth guests in the same stateroom. Book by 11:59 p.m. PT on Feb. 29

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas is offering travelers complimentary two category suite upgrades up to a penthouse suite on select cruises through June 2026. The company is also offering up to 20 percent off 30 destination-intensive voyages.

Cheapest Month to Book a Disney Cruise

When you book a Disney cruise during a cheaper time of the year, you can experience a magical vacation for an affordable price. How else can you lower the cost? Here’s a look at the cheapest month to book a Disney cruise so you won’t break the bank!

Which Month is Cheapest for A Disney Cruise?

Cruises are less expensive several times of the year, but one month stands out as the cheapest.

Overall, September is the cheapest month to book a Disney cruise. This is due to two factors: the schools are back in session after the summer recess, and hurricane season is underway. Because of these factors, the Bahamas and Caribbean are less popular during September, which results in lower fares.

When it comes to European sailings, the shoulder season has the lowest fares. The Mediterranean’s least expensive months are March, April, and November. May and October are the most affordable for Northern European cruises.

Some places are not at risk from hurricanes (such as Europe and Alaska ), but if you intend to sail to the Bahamas or the Caribbean , you should be aware of the hurricane threat. While this is a risk, it could be worth it because the rates are less expensive, and the weather is pleasant despite the possibility of storms.  Travel insurance may be wise if you plan to take a Disney Cruise during hurricane season .

In addition, September isn’t a popular month to go on vacation because children are back in school after Labor Day, and parents are usually back at work.

Other Months When Disney Cruises are Cheaper

January and early february.

January (except around New Year’s) and early February are cheaper than average. The weather is still pleasant in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, so you can take advantage of lower prices and escape the cold winters back home.

May is another cheaper month to travel. The weather is starting to heat up in many destinations, but you can find good deals on airfare and accommodations. Students are still in classes during May, so families usually don’t take summer vacations until June, July, and August. For these reasons, May is another great month to take a Disney cruise.

September is usually the cheapest month to take a Disney Cruise, but October can also be affordable.

Since the weather is cooler, you will not have to worry about the heat. Since it’s not peak season, you will find cheaper airfares. You can also take part in Halloween-themed cruises during October.

Early November and Early December

Early November and early December are also typically cheaper months to book a Disney cruise.

This is the shoulder season in many places, so you can find great deals if you’re flexible with your travel dates. Just steer clear of Thanksgiving week/weekends and the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s because they are very popular (and expensive) weeks to book a Disney cruise.

What Months are Expensive for Disney Cruises?

Disney cruises are most expensive during holiday weeks and summer . The higher prices are due to higher demand, as kids are on school break and families have more time to go on vacation. In other words, the best time for prices isn’t necessarily the best time for your schedule.

The most expensive time to take a Disney Cruise is during the summer months. The reason for higher prices is a higher demand: when kids are on school break, families have more time to spend on vacation — and Disney tops the list of best cruise lines for kids .  If you’re looking for the cheapest month to take a Disney Cruise, avoid June, July, and August .

The holiday season and increased demand make mid-December through New Year’s week an expensive time to travel. Thanksgiving week also tends to be a costly week for cruises since very few schools are in session.

Other times to avoid February vacation, Spring Break, and April vacation .  Disney cruises with special themes may also be more expensive. Examples include Pixar Day at Sea, Halloween on the High Seas, and Very Merrytime Cruises.

If possible, it’s best to avoid these dates altogether and wait until an off-peak time. You’ll experience lighter crowds and cheaper fares on Disney cruise ships .

Would love to know what the Off-Season times are. I understand some of the better deals can be had during those times, but not sure when it is. I'm assuming it's not during school vacations and holidays, right?

Between Thanksgiving and Xmas. Kids are in school and most people are getting ready for the holidays = cheap prices.

Assuming you are talking about the caribbean, hurricane season is an off season time. Hurricane season runs from, I believe, July 1 - December 1. With hurrican season, you have to expect some rougher waters and possibly some rain. But just remember, its easier to move a cruise ship than an island out of the way of a hurricane. The captain will always try to avoid, as much as possible, any rough waters, but you probably will get some if there is a tropical depression in the area. Also, some ports may be missed or shortened due to the weather.

You can also get some great prices on caribbean cruises if you sail just after Thanksgiving and just before Christmas.

Hope this helps and I am sure there are others out there that will have some other thoughts.

We like to cruise between Thanksgiving and the 2nd week of December. The prices are the lowest, you're coming out of hurricane season, and it's a great time for us to get away "sans" holiday! ;)

We usually sail in September (this will be our 3rd time), and always get great prices. We've been lucky so far with weather, as well.

January is also a time for good pricing, since it's right after the holidays.

"Off" season is in the eye of the beholder. Summer vacation and majour holidays tend to see premium rates everywhere, "Death week" (the first week or so of December, and sometimes early January) often has some of the best rates, as there is a real dip in travel at that time.

Many cruises in May/early June or September/October - which I'd call "shoulder" season, also have better rates - and for Alaska (for instance) you'll often get better odds of sunshine in May than July or August.

So, it depends on the destination, but those should give you some guidance.

Perhaps lower pricing ,but kids are never in school. They get pulled by their parents and are increasingly on ships year round in great numbers :mad:

It's been my experience on the numerous cruises that we have taken, that the kids are well behaved, involved in group activities, etc.

I agree with the above post in that prime season or off season is in the eyes of the beholder.

I agree with the rest. We like the week after Thanksgiving for sure. If you go to some of the online major travel agencies you can compare all sailings for a single ship/itinerary at a glance and see when their best prices are.

Even with a season that only runs from April through October, there are some 40 big ships and dozens of small ships cruising Alaska , making it one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world after the Caribbean and Europe. The best Alaska cruises range from off-the-beaten-path voyages on vessels carrying fewer than 100 passengers to weeklong jaunts through the Inside Passage aboard megaships that hold thousands.

The itinerary choices are numerous in Alaska. Some ships stick to tried-and-true ports, sailing through Southeast Alaska and into western Canada. Others wander deeper along the Alaska coastline to places such as the Kenai Peninsula, north to Nome and Barrow and even deep into the Bering Sea.

Some trips hit multiple national parks; others dive into Alaska culture, allowing guests to learn the stories told by totem poles or hear about “the big one” from a fisherman at a dive bar.

It can be hard to figure out which ship will deliver your idea of a “bucket list” experience in The Last Frontier. A lot comes down to your travel style, preferences and budget. Some travelers demand luxury, while others don’t mind going less fancy if it means close encounters with bears and other creatures in the wilderness. Some look for romance, while others want to introduce the kids or grandkids to glaciers and eagles, gold panning and sled dogs.

The good news is there’s a ship in Alaska for you no matter your taste or style. Here’s a beginner’s guide to the best Alaska cruises to help you narrow down your choices.

Best for megaresort fans

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean both sail some of their largest ships in Alaska. They are floating megaresorts, carrying thousands, and are big on amenities, glitz and a certain amount of glamor — think flashy casinos, Broadway shows, lavish spas. Dining and drinking venues number in the dozens, while amusement park features thrill the kids and adrenaline-seekers.

Norwegian Encore

On Norwegian Encore, you can race along a go-kart racetrack, compete in outdoor laser tag and zoom down slides at the water park while you traverse Alaska’s Inside Passage. The ship sails seven-night cruises from Seattle, visiting Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve .

Ovation of the Seas

On Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, you can order a drink from a robotic bartender, try simulated skydiving or surfing experiences and take a ride in a glass capsule that travels high above your ship on a mechanical arm — a weird and wonderful way to see the Alaska scenery.

Ovation of the Seas sails round-trip from Seattle on seven-night cruises, but the exact itinerary varies by week. The ship cruises Endicott Arm for scenic views of Dawes Glacier and typically visits three Alaska ports and Victoria.

Best for land and sea adventures

You’ve traveled far to get to Alaska, and it would be a shame to miss inland sights such as Denali National Park and Preserve and the sight of Denali, North America’s largest peak — so big it’s often shrouded in clouds caused by its own weather system.

Market leaders Holland America Line and Princess Cruises both send a half-dozen ships to Alaska each year, and they have 75 and 55 years in the market, respectively.

They top the list in terms of cruises, as well as cruise tours, which combine time sailing with overnight stays on land. The companies operate their own lodges, rail cars and motorcoaches for exploration of Alaska’s interior and beyond. Many of the ships have permission to sail in Glacier Bay.

Choose from 10- to 17-night land tours that combine a standard weeklong cruise (sometimes half a cruise) with time spent exploring Alaska’s interior by bus, train or even plane.

Holland America will base six ships in Alaska in 2024, with tour offerings to Denali, Fairbanks and Anchorage.

However, it also offers nine- to 14-night cruise tours on Koningsdam that head into the Canadian Yukon, following the route of the Klondike Gold Rush from Alaska to northwestern Canada. Disembark your cruise ship in Skagway, then travel to Whitehorse and Dawson City in the Yukon before continuing on to Fairbanks (the gateway to Arctic Alaska), Denali National Park and Anchorage.

Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises offers a cruise tour where you visit four national parks: Glacier Bay, Denali, the Kenai Fjords and America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. The 15- and 17-night trips combine a seven-night cruise on Sapphire Princess from Vancouver to Whittier, Alaska, with another week or more on land, ending in Fairbanks or Anchorage.

Best for travelers on a budget

Older ships in Norwegian and Royal Caribbean’s fleets tend to offer more reduced prices than you’ll find on the lines’ larger and newer ships, based on the fact the older ships don’t have as many bells and whistles.

Since they have so many ships in the market, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises also tend to offer frequent sales — especially on their older tonnage. These ships have a loyal following and tend to have fewer families on board, which some couples find particularly appealing.

If you’re looking for other surefire ways to save, consider sailings in the area’s shoulder season. You’ll find better deals from April to early June and in September than you will in the height of summer.

Also, in Alaska, balcony cabins are highly desirable, with everyone seeking views of the wilderness, snow-capped peaks and glaciers. As those reserves get low, the prices tend to get higher. Bargain seekers should either book early for these accommodations or choose inside, outside or guarantee cabins (where you don’t pick your room location) to save more.

Radiance of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s 20-year-old ship Radiance of the Seas mainly sails weeklong, one-way cruises between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, with prices below $100 per person, per night, for inside and outside cabins on many departures.

However, its early-season May 2024 sailing from Seward to Vancouver is the cheapest Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise of the season. It starts at $368 per person for an inside cabin.

Grand Princess and Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises has so many ships based in Alaska that you’re bound to find deals, especially on shoulder-season cruises. Both Grand and Sapphire Princess offer weeklong Alaska cruises in May 2024 starting from $548 per person for inside cabins. The itinerary starts in Vancouver and ends in Whittier, Alaska, with calls in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway and scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and College Fjord.

Best for off-the-beaten-path travel

Want to see and deeply experience coastal Alaska, and don’t mind a mellower environment where lectures and impromptu guitar singalongs replace casinos and show productions? Consider lines such as UnCruise Adventures , Lindblad Expeditions and Alaskan Dream Cruises, all with ships that carry fewer than 100 passengers (and in the case of Alaskan Dream, even under 20 passengers).

On these small ships, captains have the flexibility to alter itineraries and linger if the naturalist onboard spots a pod of whales or bears digging for clams on a beach.

Small ships can go places bigger ships can’t, so itineraries stretch far beyond the traditional ports. You’ll visit more remote places such as Petersburg, a fishing town with strong Norwegian roots, and Wrangell, one of Alaska’s oldest communities. Some itineraries are conducted entirely in the wild, with no port calls at all.

UnCruise Adventures

UnCruise Adventures explores Southeast Alaska on seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries. A day might start with a morning birding expedition, continue with a kayaking adventure and end with an evening campfire ashore. You might visit LeConte and Baird Glaciers (where the big ships don’t go), plus UnCruise has the only permits for hiking and biking adventures on Chichagof Island.

Lindblad Expeditions
