More than expected!

I wanted a portable compact size set for picnics, tailgating, or a visit to the pub... so I wouldn't have to take my much older, much larger set. It looks great inside and out. The magnetic stones are a great idea. They stay where you put them and neatly stack when you are done. It is exactly what i wanted and more than I expected.

This set is just what I wanted

The construction and materials of this set are of a high standard. The size is perfect to take around town while still being comfortable to play. Maybe too big for airplane travel, but works very well for my purpose. It was delivered safely and well packaged. I am very happy with this purchase.

Exactly what we were looking for!

Wife and I played backgammon decades ago and still had the 15\" old set, but it was missing some pieces. Went looking for replacement pieces and decided in addition to completing the old set we pick up a new 13\" set to make it easier to carry around. We play at restaurants and game rooms with the new set. It's the perfect size for that application and really like the blue points - something a little different but not too far out there that it's weird. Love the set.

We can see why: The classic game doesn’t require much setup, often comes in a case that is easy to take anywhere (including the beach, as one toy-store owner told us ), and is available at every price point. “There are backgammon sets you can find in Sears or Target that are low end and then there are sets on Madison Avenue or Rodeo Drive that are made of the most expensive leathers,” says Tommy Kunu, president of Bello Games . “At the end, they are all the same — meaning you can play on them, but some you might want to leave out on your coffee table or in your game room as a showpiece.”

One of the first things to consider when buying a backgammon set is the size, according to the game-store owners and backgammon-set manufacturers we spoke to. Several of the experts we talked to recommended backgammon sets with corkboard, which make for a quieter game as you roll the dice and move the checkers around. “Professional players , especially Americans, prefer a quieter game, so the playing field of choice is either felt or leather or cork,” says Imad Khachan, the owner of Chess Forum . Quentin Turner, president of Your Move Chess and Games , says, “Here in the States, people tend to not like the ‘clang’ noise of the dice on wood, while it’s preferred in Europe .” This board is from Crisloid, a backgammon-set manufacturer that Khachan calls a “brand of choice” and says “makes excellent quality sets with a vinyl exterior but a cork playing field.” Turner also mentioned Crisloid, calling it “high end.” We reached Jeff Caruso, the owner of Crisloid , to hear more about the cork that makes his sets so popular; he told us that it “functions as a little bit of a springboard, and it helps give more action on the dice.”

A travel set

Khachan says that people often come into his store looking for smaller, travel-size backgammon sets. “There are nine-inch magnetic sets, and these are ideal for backpacking or to carry to the park or to a bar or a restaurant. They are mostly vinyl, and the prices are under $30,” he tells us. This nine-inch set zips shut, ensuring it won’t pop open while you’re on the go, and is from the brand Wood Expressions (WE for short), which Lauren Bilanko, owner of Twenty Sided Store in Brooklyn, calls “high quality.”

A set to look like a regular player at New York City parks

Khachan says that the favorite set for serious players who are not playing at the tournament level is a 21-inch black vinyl attaché set ( which, as its name suggests, folds up into a briefcase ) . “It’s also the most popular amongst New York City parks backgammon hustlers,” he adds. “It’s big but not too bulky or too heavy to carry around everywhere and everyday, and it is in the professional size so each player can easily see what’s happening on the board. And it has good contrast because the playing field is gray and the points are black and white.”

A (less expensive) black attaché set

For a set like the one that Khachan describes, you could also try this one from Middleton Games, which has a similarly gray playing field with black and white points.

An (even less expensive) red attaché set

“The basic attaché sets with the felt interior and stitched-on points are the option that almost everyone recognizes as that backgammon set lying in their closet from the ’70s or ’80s,” says Turner. If you want to embrace the retro aesthetic, try this maroon set, which feels very ’70s living room to us.

A European-style set

While players in the U.S. tend to prefer a felt- or cork-lined board, it’s much more common to find backgammon players using a wooden set in Europe and the Middle East, according to the experts we spoke with. Jon Freeman, founder of the Brooklyn Strategist , told us that when it comes to a wooden backgammon set, ones with mother-of-pearl inlays on the exterior and interior are often the most popular among those who want a wood set and are willing to pay more than you would for a typical leatherette set. “These are really fantastic to look at and have an old-school vibe about them,” Freeman says. He didn’t recommend a specific wooden set, but this one we found is made of wood, features mother-of-pearl inlaid designs, and costs less than $60. It also has inlaid points, which Turner says can make for “really nice and smooth” playing and might appeal to more serious players who want to move their checkers quickly.

A set for playing more than backgammon

This 13″ wooden backgammon board looks amazing with its luster of piano lacquer . The backgammon wood inlay on both the carrying case and the playing surface looks and feel really luxurious. This small wooden backgammon board conveniently fold in half and  has t wo hidden inset magnets to keep the backgammon case securely closed when you travel. This makes it a great travel backgammon set.

The playing surface is in wood too and look beautiful. The patterns on  the surface looks great, the colour contrast between the points are just perfect.

The dice are just a bit small and the checkers a bit lightweight for my liking. The dice cups are also a bit shallow but I suppose for a travel backgammon set, this is alright as you want something compact and transportable. And you can always pickup some other precision dice if you really want too.

This wooden backgammon board might not be the best wooden backgammon board out there but for the price  you pay, I think it is a really good backgammon board, and it is a beautiful one too. It is compact, you can easily bring it with you wherever you go to play your favorite game!

This leather travel backgammon board is made by Sondergut, a German company specialized in roll up travel games.

I tough I would mention it in my list of best backgammon boards because it is such a great idea and I love the concept. It looks amazing too!

Once rolled up, and closed with the  heavy duty snap on the strap,  the  Sondergut travel backgammon board is no bigger than a pocket umbrella. So you can take everywhere you go on vacation, at the beach, at the campsite or even on an airplane tray. And you if want to play backgammon after your long hike in your tent, no problem, it will easily fit in you backpack.

This travel backgammon board is very light as it weighs less than 1/2 pound  but still is made of highest quality materials: it is hand-sewn, full-size board in rich mocha colored suede and has a rich look and soft, pliable feel.

The checkers are 3/4 inch (2 cm) wide and the board playing area is is 10 x 12-2/3”. When rolled up, the size is 10 x 2”. So it fits well in handbag, backpack  or carry-on bag etc…

Backgammon is a great game to play, whether you like to play it with your friends or family or even in a professional or semi professional tournament.  It is is a game that mix both luck (with the dice rolling) and skill. Obviously, the more you play, the better you will become at it.The more skill you have, the better chance you will have to win.

The price for a backgammon board can vary from less than $100 to several thousand dollars.

Backgammon board can be made with all type of materials, they can have all sort color schemes, and styles: leather backgammon sets, wooden backgammon boards,felt, cork or vinyl backgammon boards, tournament backgammon boards, portable backgammon set or travel backgammon board.

If you are a beginner player looking for your first backgammon board or maybe a semi-professional backgammon player looking to upgrade, there are few things you need to take into consideration before buying your  set. Backgammon sets have different design, they can be build using different materials and have different size.

Looking at my top pick of best backgammon boards, you  have certainly noticed that backgammon sets can have different type of design.

Probably the most common  design for a backgammon board is the Attaché backgammon set: Attaché can fold as they have two hinges in the middle, a bit like a travel case. When you want to play you just open the case and play on the two open side. They have also a handle so that you can easily take it with you if you travel. The advantage of those attache backgammon board is that they can be compact, light (depending of their size too) and transportable.

A tabletop backgammon  set is usually bigger than an attaché backgammon board. They are not design to be carried and are best if you are playing home. Luxury tabletop backgammon set will stand as a feature in your house, they be beautifully designed and crafted and you will no doubt want to expose them and show them off to people.

Some other backgammon board can  literally be a piece of furniture, like a game table and make a beautiful and functional addition to your living area.

It is only a personal matter and the choice is really yours.

Buying a backgammon board made in wood or in leather or fabric really depends of personal preferences. You want you board to be easy to clean and durable. Those are the main differences you need to be aware of.

Wooden backgammon board are often beautifully crafted, they look very nice and can have nice colors and intricate designs.

Bear in mind that a wooden playing surface may suffers from scratches  from the dice rolling and the constant sliding checkers.

It can also  be quite noisy to play on a wooden surface when you have a pair of dice hitting and bouncing on the wood over and over. A leather or a fabric backgammon set would be significantly quieter and the dice will spin for a shorter time.

Some backgammon players are looking for some noise when playing, especially in the Middle east.Again, it is a matter of personal taste.

A Luxury Backgammon board made of wood like m ahogany, ebony, briar, e lm, and burl for example,  is a beautifully handcrafted set that you would proudly show or expose in your house like you would with an expensive piece of furniture or even an expensive painting.

When I speak about leather, felt or cork backgammon sets, I am referring to the playing surface. Some backgammon sets have a leather or leatherette case but a wooden playing surface.

If you are playing backgammon in tournament or against semi-professional players, the last thing you want to buy is a wooden backgammon board. It is way too noisy. What you want is a s playing surface able to muffle the sound of the dice hitting the board. The dice also bounce less on that kind of material than they would on wood. You really want the right amount of bounce.

There is different type of leather. The most expensive one  is probably the shagreen, a very exclusive, rare and precious leather that most luxurious backgammon board are made of. It is considered by far the most resistant leather in the world and naturally so,  the luxury backgammon boards that are made of shagreen are worth fortunes.

You want a board big enough to be able to play comfortably. And when I say comfortably, I mean that you need enough space on the board to roll the dice fairy. You get less dice turn on a smaller backgammon board and that could ultimately lead to unfair dice rolling.

Tabletop backgammon board are often 26″, but the size of a backgammon can be 15”, 16”, 20” or 23”.

If you like to take your game with you on vacation, you need portable backgammon set, so you might be tempted by a more compact and light backgammon board.

Checkers comes is different sizes and materials. Ideally, you want to have checkers with a suitable weight/ size ratio. It is a personal choice but myself, I prefer my checkers to be on the heavy side. Heavy checkers are less likely to move or slide if you backgammon set is knocked into accidentally in a middle of a game.

Cheaper backgammon board tend to have plastic checkers that can fly away easily when you move the set or when the dice hit them. More expansive backgammon sets tends to have checkers made in heavier material like some sort or stone, Bakelite or pearl checkers.

It is very important that the checkers slide smoothly on the surface. For that, try to avoid backgammon boards with vinyl sew on pips because they will get worn over time and they will prevent the checkers to glide on the playing field.

In a good backgammon board, you will find that the checkers fit the pips comfortably. When you place 5 of your checkers on your six point, they should all fit with maybe just the tip of the point peeking out.

Some boards come with checkers that are either to small or too wide and it can be confusing during a game.

You may think that a pair of dice is just the same as any other pair of dice but if you do, I can tell you that it is far to be true.

Dice can vary in quality. They can have different size, weight etc…and some are not very well balanced.When you play backgammon, you rely on a fair dice rolling.

This is why you have precision dice: they have rounded corners so they can roll more, and also to ensure a more random roll. As a result, when you roll precision dice, each side has the same amount of chance show.

None of the backgammon board on my top pick have precision dice, be aware that unless it says specifically that the backgammon board comes with precision dice, you can assume is doesn’t.

A good dice cup should be hollow enough, large enough, to allow the dice to tumble inside. Also, a good cup should have a trip lip so that when the dice hit the lip, it will come out tumbling and rotating, ensuring a fair dice rolling.

You’ve learned how to play, honed your game strategy , and now you’re ready for your own backgammon set. Or maybe you just think it would make a good addition to your board game collection .

Either way, if you’re in the market for a backgammon set and want to know how to find the best one for your situation, here are some of the things to consider.

Unless you’re looking for a dedicated game table, most backgammon sets come in cases. Depending on your budget, you’ll find cases made from leatherette (common in mid-level boards), natural and premium leather, and wood.

In the wood category, many cases are made from natural hardwoods and finished with beautiful veneers. You’ll see sets made from walnut, burlwood, beechwood, poplar, oak, maple and more. Basically, many of the same hardwoods you can make fine cabinetry, furniture or even instruments from.

Often handmade, these boards exhibit fine craftsmanship.

Leatherette, on the other hand, is very common (see above list) and results in a more affordable, lighter and travel friendly option.

And leather – well leather means the set will be more expensive.

Traditional backgammon sets come with a latch for closing the case and securing all the game pieces, including stones (aka checkers) and dice, in one place. Many models use a nickel or brushed nickel plated latch that is both durable and classic. Travel sets may come with a zipper or button closure to make the boards even more secure and travel proof.

High end and expensive sets, which usually stay at home, may have gold plated latches. 

Most importantly, you want a sturdy latch that will hold up to many games over the long run. All of the boards on this list are made by quality manufacturers who recognize the importance durability and workmanship in these details.

The playing surface of your backgammon set will be designed twenty-four narrow triangles (called points), grouped into four quadrants of six triangles. These triangles alternate in color. That’s the basic configuration for any backgammon board. But the designs and materials can make a big difference in how much you like playing on your own set.

For one, backgammon boards come in a wide variety of color combinations. The points can be pretty much any color combination; often a darker and lighter color (i.e. classic black and white), but any two contrasting colors will do. The third color is the board color, which will be different than the point colors.

The goal is to simply find a color pattern you like.

Wood sets will feature inlays with different woods, or painted points with a natural surface. Again, check out different patterns and see what appeals to you.

The board surface will usually be velour, felt, or velvet. Often with additional padding. This ensures a smooth and quiet playing experience for rolling your dice and moving stones. Wood sets will usually have a natural hardwood or coated playing surface.

Professional and tournament level boards often come with special fabrics (i.e. V-Fiber™ ) that create a plush playing surface with added friction to control dice rolls and enhance precision.

The Stones (aka Checkers)

A game of backgammon uses 30 stones as playing pieces, also known as checkers. Each player gets 15 stones in a game. The stones come in a variety of weights, sizes, and materials, which largely depends on the size and quality of the board.

Many mid-level boards and travel sets will come with a set of  marbleized plastic checkers, while high end boards may include heavier stones (i.e. 20 grams each). Wood boards often include a set of wooden checkers.

One feature that some players like is having grooves on the top of the checkers. The bottoms are flat of course, but the grooved top adds a nice feel and look to the game pieces. While other players prefer the smooth, marble, thick and classic design. Much of this is a matter of personal preference.

In our opinion, as long as they have decent weight to them (anywhere from 10 – 20 grams) and come with a complete set, that should work just fine.

Backgammon sets come with two sets of 2 dice of different colors and a doubling cube . And yes, the design of the dice and the cube is important to the game. Basically, the dice and cube should have rounded edges. Also called “balled” or “beveled” dice, the machine-rounded corners allow for more randomized dice rolls.

Also, with high end tournament backgammon sets, each die will have a smooth surface, rather than a pitted surface, for better tumbling and spin.

Of course, a standard set of dice works fine for most of us, but if you’re investing in a nice set, you should make sure the dice are designed specifically for the game of backgammon. Aside from the rounded corners, backgammon dice are usually made from plastic but you can also find metal and wood dice in certain sets.

The Dice Cups

Finally, the dice cup is integral to the game of backgammon. A good backgammon set should come with two dice cups that are lined with felt, velour, or another coating or material that will dampen the sound of the dice and deliver a smooth roll.

There are two common cup shapes: the oval cup and the round cup. Many players like an oval cup, as these are more comfortable and ergonomic over the course of several games. However, professional sets often come with round cups with an added “trip lip”, designed to ensure fair and random rolls each time.

You’ll find that most classic sets come with leatherette cups. Many wooden sets that come with beautiful wooden dice cups, while even more expensive sets may come with authentic leather dice cups.

#1 Bahnhofstrasse

{ MAP } We started our Zurich Self-Guided Walking Tour at the Paradeplatz tram station in the city center. Heading north on Bahnhofstrasse, we gawked at the expensive watches glittering in the window displays.

The street is flooded with fashionable retailers, posh boutiques, fine architecture and a bevy of Swiss Banks. The famous shopping street is a Zurich must see! 

#2 Detour onto Augustinergasse and Rennweg Street

{ MAP }  On our Zurich city tour, we were sidetracked more than once by the colorful streets in the center. We turned right down the bright and colorful Augustinergasse.

{ MAP } At Widdergasse we turned left…and left again onto Rennweg. This was the main thoroughfare during the Middle Ages and features quaint craft houses. We followed Rennweg north to where it meets back up with Bahnhofstrasse.

#3 Zurich Bahnhofplatz

{ MAP } The Bahnhofplatz is the next stop on our Zurich Self Guided Walking Tour. Ranking as the biggest train station in Switzerland and one of the busiest in the world, it also marks the north end of Zurich Old Town (or Zurich Altstadt ). 

Top Tip : If you are traveling to the city on a day trip and arriving by train, you can begin your Walking Tour Zurich Old Town route here. Continue from the station to the next sight – and then visit the first sights on our list at the end of the tour, which circles back to the heart of the Old Town. 

#4 Central Polybahn

{ MAP } From the main train station, continue our Zurich free tour by crossing the Limmat River on the Bahnhofbrucke Brigde. Head to the funicular, Central Polybahn, for a ride up the hill to a lookout point. Unfortunately, it was one of the few Zurich sights that was closed during our visit, so you will have to let us know how the view is!

#5 Niederdorfstrasse

{ MAP } Continuing our Zurich Old Town walking tour, we turned south on Niederdorfstrasse, a pedestrian street filled with cafes, restaurants and bars. It was perfect timing because we were getting hungry for lunch!

Kris decided on a kebab, and I found a café near Stussihofstatt serving traditional dishes, deli-style, which are loaded up into containers and paid for by weight. I opted for an inexpensive Zurich lunch special: bratwurst with a roll and mustard for $6.50. However, I couldn’t resist adding the creamy potatoes au gratin to my meal for about $2 more!

#6 Zurich Rathaus & River Views

{ MAP }, Walking back to the Limmat River, by the Zurich Town Hall (Rathaus), we couldn’t stop taking pictures of the idyllic waterfront buildings.

There, we were approached by a woman who told us that the flag flying above the front door of Town Hall indicated that the local government was in session. She also said that we were free to go in to watch the proceedings.

We passed through security and then walked upstairs to a balcony overlooking a beautiful room. it was filled with a (surprisingly) casual bunch of politicians. Taking a peek inside the Rathaus is one of the best free things to do in Zurich (besides our walking tour Zurich, of course!).

#7 Grossmunster

{ MAP } Next up on our Zurich itinerary: the Grossmunster Cathedral. Built in 1220, the Cathedral is one of the top Zurich tourist attractions. The two towers were added in 1787 and the 187 steps can be climbed for great views (for a small fee).

The interior of the Grossmunster is rather plain, but has bright stained glass windows. A crypt beneath the altar houses an original sculpture from one of the towers.

#8 Lake Zurich and Opernhaus Zurich

{ MAP } Continuing on our Zurich one day tour, we walked south to Lake Zurich and the Opera House (Opernhaus Zurich). On the lakeside, a man played the traditional Swiss alphorn for tips.

Behind him, on the lake, dozens of swans were gliding on the water and in the background the majestic snowcapped Swiss Alps completed the idyllic scene.

#9 Limmat Riverwalk and St. Peter Church

{ MAP } While we could have continued walking along the lake, there were more Zurich Old Town attractions we wanted to see! Crossing back to the west side of the river at Quaibrucke Bridge, we strolled along the water.

{ MAP } We cut into the old city center near St. Peter Church, which has the largest church clock in all of Europe.

#10 Lindenhof

{ MAP } We wound through the tangle of streets up to Lindenhof. A raised park with views over the river and one of the best places to visit in Zurich. Two men played bocce ball, a younger group contemplated the next move on the giant chess board. Several others sat along the wall enjoying the pleasant view of Zurich and the soaring Swiss Alps in the distance.

#11 Zurich Chocolate Shop: Confiserie Teuscher

{ MAP } There is a long history of chocolate production in the city. Touring Zurich wouldn’t be complete without a taste of chocolate! 

During your Zurich self-guided walking tour you will undoubtedly pass by numerous chocolate shops. However, we recommend seeking out Confiserie Teuscher.

Colorfully decorated for Easter, it was difficult to tell if it was a chocolate shop or a florist, but the sweet scent of cocoa floated out the door. Unable to resist the temptation any longer, we splurged for three truffles: caramel, Grand Marnier and the store’s signature Champagne.

#12 Zeughauskeller

{ MAP } We ended our ‘Zurich in a day’ tour at Zeughauskeller for a pint of local beer. Built in 1487, the building was used as an armory. Then in 1926 it was transformed into a place for social gathering and beer drinking. The old-time, Zurich beer hall atmosphere survives today.

During our visit to Zurich, we stayed in a super Airbnb Apartment . In general, we have found that staying in apartments is less expensive than hotel rooms – with the added benefit of a kitchen and more space. 

However, short trips of just a few days can incur big Airbnb fees. So be sure to price out your options before booking.

Getting To Zurich

Zurich can be reached by plane, train, bus or car. Our preferred method of getting anywhere is by flying, we are JetSetting Fools, after all! We flew into Zurich from Zagreb, Croatia and departed to Ljubljana, Slovenia .

Fly to Zurich

Zurich can be easily reached by plane from several top European cities like Amsterdam , London , Paris , and Frankfurt . As well as US gateways like New York , Chicago , Boston , Washington DC , and San Francisco !

The Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the largest international airport in Switzerland and is located 6 miles north of the Zurich Old Town. 

When we start our search for affordable plane tickets , we look for the best deals on airline tickets on Skyscanner.

Zurich by Train, Bus or Car

To get between destinations when flights are not feasible, we usually rely on public transportation. These include trains or buses – of which there are several to Zurich.

Use Rail Europe to find train tickets. Our preferred bus company is FlixBus . It is economical, clean and comfortable (and sometimes has on-board Wi-Fi, seat-back entertainment, refreshments and a toilet).

We aren’t keen on driving abroad, but renting a car can often save time and money (especially when traveling with more than two people). Having a car allows for greater discovery. Before making a reservation, read all of our Car Rental Tips .

Zurich to Lake Como - What to do & how to get there

My husband and I are planning a trip to Switzerland and Lake Como. We are planning on flying round trip from Zurich and either driving or taking the train. Right now we are thinking of stopping in Lucerne and Interlaken on the way to Lake Como. We would love any tips on best routes and also suggestions for what to see or where to stay. Thanks!!

To begin with, it would help to know which part of Lago di Como you want to visit? One of the easiest places for exploring the mid-lake area is the small town of Varenna, which is about an hour from Milan by train. From there you can easily take the Ferry across to Bellagio or other nearby towns.

Travel by train will be far easier and probably quicker. Lucerne is a wonderful and beautiful city, so spending at least a few days there would be good. Rather than "stopping" in Interlaken, I'd suggest you continue a bit further to experience the true alpine beauty of Switzerland in the Berner Oberland. Spending a few days in either Lauterbrunnen or Mürren would be perfect.

A bit more information on your trip would be helpful, such as the duration of the trip and your interests for sightseeing. You might also check your local Library and have a look at the RS guidebooks for the locations you're considering.

Consider taking the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano, Italy. One of the most spectacular train journeys in the world.

From Tirano, there is a regional train to Varenna on Lake Como.

Thank you! We are planning on doing about a 10 day trip and we like hiking, beautiful views, good food (not expensive) and experiencing other cultures. Thank you for the tips on Switzerland, do you think we should split the trip to do half in Switzerland and half in Italy? How many days would you suggest for the towns near Lake Como?

This is a popular route, that seems to have a geographic problem called the Furka Pass. This pass kind of divides eastern and western Switzerland. The approaches to Lake Como come from east of this pass, while from the west they go to Lake Maggiore. The Berner Oberland (Interlaken, Muerren, Wengen) is on the west side of the Furka Pass. There is a rail line over (or under) the Furka Pass. It is scenic, the Glacier Express passes along it, but i does add time and expense.

So I propose this way. Travel by train from Zurich airport to the Berner Oberland. As others pointed out, Interlaken is not really it. You need to be in the mountains for hiking and the spectacular views, so Wengen and Muerren are best for this.

Then to Luzern, on the scenic Luzern-Interlaken Express train.

From Luzern, there is 1 direct train every day to Como, Italy, and many with a single change. This route uses a new tunnel about 30 miles under the Alps. If you want a more scenic route over the mountains, you can still use the older and slower route over the mountains by making more changes. Finally there is a daily boat-train combination called the Gotthard Panoramic Express that uses a boat to the far end of the lake (Luzern, or more properly the Vierstaetterwaldsee) to meet a train over the old route to Lugano, then another train to Como. https://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holidays/ideas/offer.html/zuege/gotthard-panorama-express

Como, where you arrive, is a small city on the southwest corner of the lake. Most people think of places like Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna in the middle of the lake when lake Como comes to mind. You can get to Bellagio either by bus or fast boat from Como city. You can get to Menaggio by bus from Lugano, Switzerland.

Another question -- would you recommend staying in Menaggio, Bellagio or Varenna? We have hotel points we can use to stay in Como which is great because it is free, but we don't want to compromise time if it is far from sights we would want to visit/enjoy in the other towns around the lake. Any advice would be welcome : )

Hiking and beautiful views abound in the Berner Oberland. The only way we have found to have "not expensive" food in Switzerland is to rent an apartment and cook our dinners. At least that helps us afford the cost of the gondola lifts and trains.
