Why I Fell in Love With Kate Moss’s Favorite ’90s London Label

When I think of my mother in the ’90s, back when her hair was still platinum and she’d announce herself by the clinking of her silver bangles, she’s wearing a transparent tank top with dévoré buds climbing up its clingy navy body. “It’s Voyage,” (pronounced voy-ahz ) she told me. “And one day it will be yours.” Lo and behold, that day came—and with it, a fully fledged obsession with the now-defunct London-based label, famous as much for its singular, free-spirited silhouettes as its story.

Founded by the Mazillis, dubbed “the Addams Family of fashion,” Voyage opened on Fulham Road in 1991 and quickly gained notoriety for its three- and four-digit priced wares and a door policy that rivaled that of Studio 54. (Lacking membership cards, Madonna and Naomi Campbell were both reportedly turned away.) Those who made it in—Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, and Linda Evangelista, who once declared, “I can’t survive without your clothes”—though, discovered a treasure trove of one-off velvet-trimmed camisoles, sheer slinky skirts dripping with beads, and chiffon gowns accented with rows of teeny-tiny pearls (pieces that, coincidentally, would feel right at home in Spring 2019’s perfectly imperfect handmade collections ).

In 1998, Gwyneth Paltrow turned heads on the red carpet when she attended the premiere of Sliding Doors dressed not in her character’s pared-back wardrobe , but rather in a lace-lined qipao made by Voyage. Suddenly, die-hard minimalists were trading in their Calvin Klein and Donna Karan for the brand’s eclectic, ethereal concoctions—often worn head to toe—with the look reaching runways like Miu Miu and Chanel, too. “Here’s how a humble home-dyed cardigan with a colorful velvet trim changed the face of fashion,” said a Vogue article from 1997, the same year Voyage set up stateside outposts at Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman.

“They were quirky and fun, and women felt very freed by them because they were casual and easy to wear,” recalls the costume designer Livia Pascucci, who dressed Julia Roberts in Notting Hill in one of Voyage’s signature floral-washed slips, which Roberts then wore off-screen, too. “They created this whole strange wall around them, which was very smart because, as you know, once you can’t have something, you want it.”

Alas, what comes around goes around, as they say: Eventually, that exclusive door policy and exorbitant price tag led to the label’s demise in 2002. The silver lining? Forgotten by many, its one-of-a-kind riches have landed on the likes of eBay, Etsy, and Poshmark for a fraction of what they once cost. (Think: a shrunken hand-dyed cardigan for $6.50; an amethyst-hued version of Roberts’s own dress for $20.) Now, the hoi polloi can shop Voyage in the comfort of their own homes (or, um, beds). One hell of a trip.

Established in 2011 by Brittany Belz, LA based contemporary collection, Voyage Clothing, draws inspiration from world travels, festivals, and times past. The collection consists of effortlessly chic dresses, blouses, and bottoms that have a modern and eclectic aesthetic with the feel of the past.

Voyage Clothing was established in August 2011 by former sales rep and LA based fashionista, Brittany Belz. After travelling the world, Belz wanted to create a collection that showed the influence of culture on fashion. The contemporary women’s collection selects items from the past and reinterprets it with a modern twist, creating an eclectic, versatile collection. the collection is diverse and features both cute, brightly hued dresses as well as cozy, comfortable knits available in edgy sweaters and chic dresses. Retail price ranges between $72-180.00 and all items are made in Los Angeles.

The voyage girl is interested in travel and likes clothes that are easy to pack up in her suitcase and are no brainers in terms of looking effortlessly chic. Items can easily transition from day to night, simply by changing accessories. Additionally, the collection consists of lightweight materials such as cottons and rayons, therefore items are easy to travel with. The voyage girl wants to stand out in a crowd. She does so without even having to try. She doesn’t want to look like everybody else and dresses depending on how she feels. She takes risks, she’s rebellious, but always portrays herself as well composed.

Founded in 1991 by the then husband and wife team of Tiziano and Louise Mazzilli, the Voyage label kick-started the craze for boho chic with their astronomically priced ribbon-trimmed cardigans.

Celebrities and fashionistas flocked to their Fulham Road store to get their hands on the one-off pieces – often flamboyant creations that could easily be part of a costume drama or stage show. The brand gained notoriety for their Members Only policy, famously turning away the likes of Madonna, Naomi Campbell and Julia Roberts. Instead of having an adverse effect, it only added appeal, so the stars who managed to enter the hallowed ground were much photographed wearing the prized items.

Along with their son and daughter, Rocky and Tatum, the Mazzillis – dubbed The Addams Family Of Fashion because of their Gothic style home – became famous for their vintage-look clothing and accessories, mixing – often clashing – fabrics, textures and embellishments to create individual clothing. A masculine shape or style would be softened by, perhaps, a beaded collar or quirky trim. Even simple items, like a vest top, would be transformed by adding textured ribbon straps, an unexpected tiny pocket on the sleeve of a jacket, fleecy lining instead of silk in an evening coat… Everything had a twist. The inside of the garment could be just as exciting as the outside – a brown and burgundy striped velvet blazer with psychedelic 60s patterned lining which Austin Powers would be proud of, a brown tweed-effect bag with bright pink silk interior with brocade slip pocket.

Voyage also collaborated with two famous US department stores – Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman – to produce clothing that carried their label along with the “Voyage. Invest in the original” one. Original indeed – each unique piece was hand made in England, so no two items were the same, be it clothing, bag or accessory. Of course, these individual pieces came at a price, a pair of men’s jeans retailed at £1,650, an embroidered coat, £3,000.
