Enjoy a narrated overview of Jacksonville history which highlights the beautiful vintage homes and commercial buildings.  Tours last approximately 45 minutes and depart from the Visitor Information Center- 185 North Oregon – corner of C Street & North Oregon.

June-August: Tuesday-Sunday*

May, Sept., Oct.: Saturday – Sunday*

(*Sunday tours begin at 11:30am)

Five tours a day departing at

10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

Fare is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children (10 & under). Lap children ride free. Tickets can be purchased at the Visitor Information Center as cash or credit.

Take a seat and enjoy a pleasant ride through Jacksonville while learning fun facts and interesting highlights about our local history. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and are meant to be enjoyed by all ages. Private tours are also available by reservation. For more information, visit jacksonvilleoregon.org or call 541-899-8118.

Tour pick-up and drop-off is available from the Visitor Information Center at the corner of C St. & N. Oregon St. Tickets are available at time of booking; adults $10 and $5 for kids (free for lap infants). Tours are offered Tuesday thru Sunday at 10:30am (except Sundays), 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm, thru August. Tours will also be offered on Saturdays and Sundays in September and October.

Stretch your legs in the comfort of morning temperatures while hearing the stories of the people who transformed a gold rush town into the 19th century center of regional government, commerce, and society when you join Historic Jacksonville, Inc. on one of our weekly Saturday 1-hour guided “Walk through History” tours.

Tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall and cover about 1 mile with multiple stops.  Guests hear how gambling money built a church; how the Civil War ended a successful mercantile partnership; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed and preserved the town. 

Every Saturday through August 31 – 10am New City Hall, 206 North 5th Street, Jacksonville FREE!  (Donations welcomed!)

of the 1863 Beekman Bank!

Did you know that Jacksonville’s Beekman Bank began as a gold dust office making it the oldest financial institution in the Pacific Northwest?  Or that it saw the equivalent of $1 billion today in gold crossing its counters?

Step behind the counter of this unique institution and interact with costumed docents sharing stories of late 19th Century banking practices, gold shipping, and handshake deals; peer in drawers containing old checks, stage schedules, and paperwork; enter the vault that stored all those millions in gold!  And it’s FREE!

Catch a glimpse of a Jacksonville upper-class Victorian family’s lifestyle when Historic Jacksonville, Inc. opens the C.C. Beekman House Museum for 30-minute tours.  The Beekmans were Jacksonville’s richest and most prominent pioneer family.  “Family Life” tours highlight their upper-class late 1800s daily lifestyle, changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution, and Victorian architectural and design innovations, providing insights into life in Jacksonville during the town’s heyday. 

1st & 3rd Saturdays, June 1st through August 17th – 11am to 2pm C.C. Beekman House Museum, 470 E. California Street, Jacksonville, Oregon Tours begin every 20 to 30 minutes.  Admission, $5 (cash or check at the door).

Jacksonville Haunted History Tours!

The ghoulies, and ghosties, and long-legged beasties are back — not to mention brothels and epidemics and hangings and arson and saloons and haunted houses!  Learn about ghosts that still linger in Jacksonville’s historic district along with a little history about the buildings, their occupants, and life in a gold rush town.  Historic Jacksonville Inc.’s guided Haunted History walking tours will again be offered on the 2nd Friday of each month from June 14 through September 13, with special October tours on the 11 th and 12 th . 

Tours leave from the Jacksonville Visitors Center at the corner of North Oregon and C streets and last about 1 hour.  Guests can choose form 2 different tours each night.  The Courthouse route features brothels, epidemics, and hangings.  The Britt Hill tours highlight murder, arson, saloons, and Oregon’s oldest Chinatown.  And both tours have lots of haunted houses.  Tours are $10 per person and reservations are required.  Tickets are available at www.historicjacksonville.org/haunted-history-tours/ .

When Oregon was admitted to the Union in 1859, Jacksonville was the largest inland trade center in the new state, and Jacksonville and its residents played a dominant role in early Oregon history and statehood. But when the railroad by-passed Jacksonville in the 1880s, the town slowly sank into oblivion. However, that oblivion also proved to be the town’s salvation, preserving the historic buildings, homes, and character that you see today—Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District.  Today, these landmarks live again through the efforts of the City of Jacksonville, volunteers, and private owners so that you can again experience Jacksonville in its heyday.

Jacksonville is a bit of a secret gem in southern Oregon, located approximately five miles west of scenic Medford . Although, with significant cultural events, like a months-long music festival, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year, and other exciting things to do in all seasons, the secret is not that well kept.

This historic town began with a gold mining boom in the 1850s. Today it's is popular for different reasons, but many of the historic buildings remain.

Jacksonville has a fun community vibe, making it one of the best small towns to visit in Oregon . Shopping, dining, and strolling around in the sunny weather are other popular activities. And, surrounded by stunning landscapes, the town is also an excellent basecamp for southern Oregon adventures.

The rich history of Jacksonville is on full display with various tours of the town. One of the most popular guided outings, the Jacksonville Trolley Tour , offers a 45-minute narration of the city's past. These fun historical tours depart five times a day between Tuesday and Sunday throughout June and July. Tours take place on the weekends in May, September, and October.

The trolley isn't the only tour in town. The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce also offers a free self-guided walking tour following much of the same route as the trolley.

Jacksonville's haunted side is also on display with select tours of the city. Near All Hollow's Eve at the end of the year, the trolley transforms into a Haunted Trolley . This family-friendly event offers a ghoulish narration and visual effects for a spooktacular ride. The Jacksonville Haunted History Walking Tour also highlights the town's restless residents this time of year, with costumed characters adding to the effect.

Shopping in Jacksonville is a treat. It gives visitors a reason to walk around downtown and admire the historic ambience of the city. And, with only local shops lining the downtown area, the selection guarantees finding something unique with each visit.

With a long and spirited cultural history, it should come as no surprise that Jacksonville has a lot of antiques to peruse. The antiquing available in Jacksonville has helped put this small town back on the map. Places like Trolley Stop Antiques and Pickety Place Antiques are good first places to visit.

But it's not just old-timey items in Jacksonville. Several modern merchants of clothing, home furnishings, and amusements also line the streets. Places like Willowcreek Gifts is an excellent stop for souvenirs and locally made items, and Rebel Heart Books on West California Street caters to both bibliophiles and casual readers alike.

The Britt Music & Arts Festival entertains thousands of spectators with dozens of performances throughout the summer. This months-long music festival doesn't subscribe to a specific genre, either. Performances range from jam bands to country music and include classical, reggae, and funk shows.

Over 30 scheduled event s span June through September. Nearly all performances occur at the stunning outdoor Britt Festival Pavilion , on the estate of the prominent 19th-century photographer, Peter Britt. This natural amphitheater offers spectacular scenery to go with the show.

Seating is split between reservable bench seats near the front of the stage and a sprawling lawn area in the back. Bring a blanket for the lawn seating, and perhaps a pair of binoculars for better views. Personal food and beverages are welcome at each show.

Several of the concerts sell out each year. The amphitheater's total seating tops out at 2,200 people —which is nearly enough to accommodate Jacksonville's entire full-time population.

Gold was first discovered in Rich Gulch, on the southwest side of today's city center, in the winter of 1851. Soon after, Jacksonville grew to become a cultural hub of the Oregon Territory — which wouldn't become a state for another seven-plus years.

Following the gold boom, interest continued to grow thanks to the prospect of the California Railroad coming through town. In 1883, when the railroad laid tracks in the adjacent community of Medford instead, the city began its bust after three decades of prosperity.

Jacksonville bounced back to become a cultural hub of agriculture, entertainment, and art. Many of the historic buildings from the mid-to-late 19th century remain on the streets today. And now, Jacksonville has so many buildings over a century old, the entire central commercial district is on the National Register of Historic Places .

Sightseeing Tours: Enjoying the historic aesthetics is as easy as walking around. Places like the historic Jackson County Courthouse and Beekman House are hard to miss. Simply strolling this well-aged infrastructure is a quintessential experience while visiting. The town also offers various walking and trolley tours that narrate the surrounding history.

Jacksonville and the surrounding Applegate Valley offer prime conditions for cultivating lavender. This aromatic and eye-catching plant takes full bloom between approximately mid-June and mid-August . And one of the best ways to take it all in is the Southern Oregon Lavender Trail .

The current Lavender Trail has five scenic stops along the route, mostly following Highway 238. On the trail's northern end between Medford and Jacksonville, the OSU Lavender Garden is the state's first lavender demonstration garden. It has over 80 varieties on display.

Next on the trail, Lavender Fields Forever at Applegate River Lavender Farm is in Jacksonville proper and is perhaps the one place to go if you can't visit them all. Alongside ample u-pick opportunities, this working farm also offers educational programs. Classes include essential oil diffusing, wreath making, and lessons on cultivating lavender at home.

Several hiking opportunities lace Jacksonville within city borders. From easy walks through gardens to more challenging uphill climbs, the range of routes caters to every type of explorer. One of the densest concentrations of hiking trails is in Forest Park , located approximately two miles west of the city's center.

Forest Park encompasses over 1,000 acres of lush terrain and over 30 miles of multi-use trails. Routes lead along stream beds, through canyons, and up towards significant views of the Siskiyou Mountains.

Outside of Forest Park, the Jacksonville Woodland Trails also provide a surplus of routes to explore. Primarily encompassing the southwest part of town, this trail system features over 16 miles of blazes to follow. The Britt Woods and Peter Britt Gardens are two popular areas within the Jacksonville Woodlands.

The nearby city of Ashland, 15 miles southeast, is home to the acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival . This world-renowned festival takes place over eight months, with 800 performances every year. It has become nothing short of a way of life in Ashland.

Productions grace many stages in Ashland, but none quite as remarkable as the Allen Elizabethan Theatre . This open-air stage features a three-story façade that looks to belong in 1600s England. This set décor and all its moving pieces, alongside the authentic Shakespearean dialogue, really sets the ambience during a show.

The merriment flows from the Shakespearean stages into the adjacent Lithia Park . This linear public space has also grown alongside the festival to be one of the nation's most acclaimed city parks, and one of the most popular places to visit in Ashland .

The prominent plateaus on the Rogue River , known as Table Rocks, are among the most popular hiking destinations in the region. These two mega-monoliths, Lower and Upper Table Rock, stand 800 feet above the Rogue Valley and offer tremendous views. And both trailheads are accessible from Jacksonville with a 30-minute drive.

It's less than two miles of hiking in one direction to reach the top of either Table Rock. But, both routes climb approximately 800 feet , making it an uphill effort. Lower Table Rock is technically the easier hike but still presents a challenge.

The best time of year to make the hike is in the spring or fall, avoiding the intense exposure of the summer sun.

Upon making it to the top of either Table Rock, a scattering of trails leads in all directions across the flat expanse. These elevated areas contain a significant cultural history tied back to the native Takelma Indians population.

Much of the Table Rock history is discussed on a Rogue Jet Boat Adventure, which takes place on the river below.

The world-famous Rogue River begins in Crater Lake and flows north of Jacksonville and the Applegate Valley. Several fun ways to spend the day surround this wild & scenic river.

Popular activities include hiking to natural bridges, angling from the shores, and white-water rafting through rapids.

However, one of the best ways to experience the Rogue is on a Rogue Jet Boat Adventure . This guiding company provides 2.5-hour tours in a light and agile jet boat. These nimble river vessels navigate up and down the current while having a little fun with hairpin turns and fast acceleration. The popular boat rides are fun for the whole family.

Rogue Jet Boat Adventures start and begin at TouVelle State Recreation Site , a 12-mile drive from Jacksonville. Alongside the exciting ride, the tour guide provides an in-depth narration of the area's natural and cultural history. Specifically, and with a great view of the prominent plateaus, Table Rocks' history is expanded upon during each tour.

Crater Lake is one of America's most stunning national parks and is less than two hours from Jacksonville. This ancient caldera is the remnant of Mount Mazama erupting over 7,000 years ago. Rainfall and snowmelt collected in the massive crater with the passage of time, making Crater Lake the deepest lake in the United States .

Not only is the water deep at Crater Lake, but thanks to its purity, it is also a fantastic shade of blue. One of the most popular things to do at Crater Lake is simply to stand at the rim and stare across the dazzling expanse. This view alone cements Crater Lake as one of Oregon's top sightseeing attractions .

One of the best places to visit from Jacksonville is the Rim Village and Rim Visitor Center . It's approximately a two-hour drive to this hub of activity on the southwest rim. Here, visitors can access the West Rim Drive or paralleling hiking trail for extended views. Rim Village also has an extensive campground for those looking to extend a day trip into an overnight adventure.

On the historic Jackson County Courthouse grounds, Art Presence Art Center is a central spot to peruse local works. This community-based art center features over 30 members who continuously display new work. Mediums range from painting to ceramics and include bronzed sculptures, beaded jewelry, and photography.

The Art Presence Art Center also engages the community with regularly occurring events and classes. Live music, book readings, and artist lectures are standard at this community spot. The center also puts out several calls for submissions for local artists looking to get displayed.

Jacksonville is home to one of the largest and oldest historic cemeteries in the state. Jacksonville's Historic Cemetery is home to over 5,000 gravesites, nearly all dug by hand, with the oldest dating back to 1859. This air of significant history offers a memorable place to visit and walk among the gravestones.

The Friends of Jacksonville's Historic Cemetery oversees the property, including maintenance and restoration on the grounds. The non-profit group also offers guided tours, coupled with historical presentations. Tours take place on the second Saturday of each month between May and September.

The cemetery spreads across 32 acres on the north side of town. The main entrance is at North Oregon and E Street, with plenty of parking just beyond the entrance gate. The cemetery is open to the public 365 days a year between 8am and dusk.

Jacksonville is primed for memorable overnight travel. Many of the hotels in Jacksonville cater to a classy vacation, often encompassing historic buildings and guesthouses. These aesthetic lodgings match the historic charm of the city and often set the ground for a romantic retreat.

The Jacksonville Inn is a favorite couples' getaway in town, located in the heart of the historic district. This 19th-century building now operates as a boutique hotel with eight unique rooms and four independent suites available. Each overnight accommodation has period-authentic furniture and a touch of historic class.

Two other popular options in Jacksonville include the Magnolia Inn and McCully House Inn . Both of these historic properties offer intimate settings within unique rooms, accompanied by beautiful properties. Jacksonville Haunted Trolley Tours

The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce’s Haunted Trolley Tour s will introduce you to some of the spirits that inhabit familiar Jacksonville structures and share their stories with you.  Hear about the pioneer who helped settle Jacksonville and still keeps on eye on his homestead and the séance that went horribly wrong. Tours are Friday,  October 21, Saturday, October 22 and also on Friday, October 28 & Saturday, October 29 , and depart every 20 minutes between 6:00 – 9:00 pm .

Tickets will be on sale in September .   Advance purchase is recommended as this event sold out last year.  Tickets can be purchased at Jacksonville Visitors Center.  You can reserve  seats by calling 541-899-8118 and then mail your your payment or stop by our office during business hours – 10 am – 3 pm to  make payment and collect your tickets.  Subject to space availability they may also be purchased immediately prior to tour time.  Parents are asked to exercise their own judgment regarding a child’s participation.

You’ll learn all this and more when you join us for our  2023 Historic Jacksonville Walk through History  tours!

Non-profit Historic Jacksonville, Inc. are happy to announce that they are once again offering their free Saturday walking tours beginning May 27th through Sept. 2nd. These 1-hour tours will leave from City Hall/Courthouse Square (North 5th between C and D streets) at 10 am.    (Donations are appreciated to help with the ongoing maintenance of the historic properties.)

Evening haunted tours resume June 11 and continue monthly through October.

Join us again next year when we recognized the legacy that Jacksonville pioneers left for us — and that some of our pioneers still linger as well in the forms of spirits and ghosts.

Haunted tours are offered the second Friday of each month starting in June. In October tours will be offered on both Friday, Oct. 8, and Saturday, Oct. 9. A Britt Hill Tour features tales of arson, saloons and Oregon’s first Chinatown. The Courthouse Tour highlights stories of brothels, epidemics and hangings.

Summer tours begin at 7, 7:15, 7:30, 7:45 p.m. October tours begin at 6, 6:15, 6:30, 6:45, and 7 p.m.

Haunted tours are $10 per person and reservations must be made by 4 p.m. of tour days. No walk-up sales will be available. Private tours can be arranged for 10 to 12 guests at a cost of $15 per person. All tours begin at the Jacksonville Visitors Center at the corner of North Oregon and West C streets. Bookings can be made online here .

BEEKMAN HOUSE & BEEKMAN BANK TOURS

Beekman House and Beekman Bank tours are scheduled Saturdays and Sundays, Memorial Weekend through Labor Day, 11am – 3pm.  Its location is on the corner of California Street and N. 3rd Street.

Docents will be dressed in attire from the period. In October Victorian mourning customs will be presented. The traditional Victorian Christmas events will also be held at the house.

Beekman Bank is the oldest financial institution in the Pacific Northwest. Previous tours included “Secrets & Mysteries of the Beekman Bank”.
