"Ericeira surf trip was an amazing trip, one of my best trips. I enjoyed everyday day, with a lot of fun, sport, lovely meetings, good (such good) food, parties, wonderful landscapes and sunsets, thanks to Filippo. Caring, responsible, open-minded, always present, a hell of a dancer, he gave us the joy of surfing and continuing. Thank you so much for this week Filippo!"

"The trip to Sweden with Kathi was great! She is a very friendly, helpful and empathetic person who made sure that everybody had a wonderful time and could enjoy the trip to the fullest. Besides the unforgettable Sled Dog Tour itself, Kathi made sure that everything was planned perfectly, from the accomodation to our stops on the way. I would definitely join another trip with her."

"My first time using JoinMyTrip, was a bit weary about how it might be but i wouldn't fault a single bit of it. Rita did a fantastic job of making the trip unforgettable. She had great adventures planned and if it wasn't for her there was a lot we wouldn't have seen. Definitely one for the memory books and hopefully there will be alot more. Thank you Rita!"

Man Drowns During Father’s Day Fishing Trip After Waders Fill with Water, Authorities Say

His son unsuccessfully went into the river to try to save him

A man who was on a Father’s Day fishing trip with his son died after drowning in a Maine river, multiple news outlets report.

James Wescott, 56 of Fremont, New Hampshire, was fly fishing with his son Jarod Wescott at the Kennebec River in Embden around 8 a.m. local time on Sunday, June 16, according to local TV station WABI and The Bangor Daily News , citing the Maine Department of Inland Fish and Wildlife.

PEOPLE reached out to the department for comment but did not immediately hear back.

James was trying to exit the river but lost his footing before falling into the water’s strong currents, WABI and The Miami Herald reported.

His waders, which are waterproof boot-overalls that typically cover most of the body’s bottom half, quickly filled with water, making it difficult for him to maintain control of his body, officials said.

He was not wearing a wading belt and was swept away, per WABI.

As Jarod witnessed his father struggling in the Kennebec River, the younger man removed his own waders and jumped into the water to try to rescue him but was unsuccessful, according to the Herald .

Jarod then decided to swim back to the shore without James in order to find help, according to the Herald , the Daily News and WABI.

Several nearby fire departments — Anson, Solon, Madison and Skowhegan — responded to the scene. Authorities soon found James but he was unresponsive by the time they arrived.

Special counsel probed Trump Mar-a-Lago trip that aides 'kept quiet' weeks before FBI search: Sources

One witness was told Trump was "checking on the boxes," sources said.

A trip to Mar-a-Lago taken by former President Donald Trump that aides allegedly "kept quiet" just weeks before FBI agents searched the property for classified materials in his possession raised suspicions among special counsel Jack Smith's team as a potential additional effort to obstruct the government's classified documents investigation , sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

The previously unreported visit, which allegedly took place July 10-12 in the summer of 2022, was raised in several interviews with witnesses, sources familiar with the matter said, as investigators sought to determine whether it was part of Trump's broader alleged effort to withhold the documents after receiving a subpoena demanding their return.

MORE: Special counsel questioned witnesses about 2 rooms FBI didn't search inside Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence: Sources

At least one witness who worked closely with the former president recalled being told at the time of the trip that Trump was there "checking on the boxes," according to sources familiar with what the witness told investigators.

Trump pleaded not guilty last year to 40 criminal counts related to his handling of classified materials after leaving the White House, after prosecutors said he repeatedly refused to return hundreds of documents containing classified information and took steps to thwart the government's efforts to get them back. His longtime aide, Walt Nauta, and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira pleaded not guilty to related charges.

Trump has denied all charges and denounced the probe as a political witch hunt.

Gathering evidence

Several witnesses who spoke to investigators described the trip as highly unusual, given that Trump typically spends the summer months at his Bedminster club in New Jersey, and because Trump's living quarters at his Mar-a-Lago property were under construction at the time of the visit, sources said.

Other witnesses who were questioned by Smith's team said they were led to believe that Trump returned to check on the status of the renovations, said sources.

PHOTO: In this June 9, 2017, file photo, President Donald Trump is shown at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Just weeks before the trip, as ABC News has previously reported , Trump allegedly had the lock on a closet in his residence changed while his attorney was in Mar-a-Lago's basement searching for classified documents in a storage room that he was told contained all such documents. The FBI failed to check the locked closet in Trump's residence when they searched the estate in August 2022, which some investigators later came to believe should have been done.

The trip came as investigators were gathering evidence that Trump continued to possess classified documents, and followed a separate subpoena in late June 2022 seeking surveillance footage from Mar-a-Lago that showed aides to Trump moving boxes between a storage room in the resort and his residence.

The trip also followed a similar instance of unplanned travel to Mar-a-Lago by Nauta, where, according to a superseding indictment , he is alleged to have conspired with Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira to attempt to delete security camera footage.

Contacted by ABC News, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, without providing evidence, accused prosecutors of lying and illegally leaking material.

"The entire documents case was a political sham from the very beginning and it should be thrown out entirely," Cheung said in comments to ABC News.

A spokesperson for the special counsel's office declined to comment to ABC News.

'Keeping this one quiet'

At the time of Trump's trip in July 2022, some staff expressed confusion as to where Trump would even stay on the property, sources said, given the renovations that his living quarters were undergoing.

"They were keeping this one quiet ... nobody knew about this trip," one witness with direct knowledge of the trip told investigators, according to sources familiar with the witness' statements.

Trump left New Jersey on July 9, 2022, for a campaign rally in Anchorage, Alaska, and was scheduled to return to New Jersey following that event, according to aircraft manifests described by sources to ABC News. But the plans changed in the days immediately leading up to the trip and he decided to fly to Florida instead, updated aircraft manifests of the trip show.

According to sources, investigators involved in the case identified what they believe to be a series of unusual steps taken by Trump and members of his inner circle to ensure the trip stayed under the radar.

Nauta, who traveled with Trump on the trip, sent a number of text messages to close staff members indicating that the Florida visit was to be kept quiet, according to sources familiar with the contents of the messages.

"I'm pretty sure [Trump] wants minimal people around on Monday," Nauta texted one longtime Trump employee just one day before Trump arrived in Florida, according to a message sources detailed to ABC News.

And on July 8, when one Trump Organization employee reached out to Nauta wanting to confirm rumors of a Trump visit so proper preparations could be made, Nauta made clear he wanted the trip to remain "discreet," sources familiar with the communications said. The sources said Nauta sent a text message to the employee that included emojis with zippers over the mouth, which is often used to convey a secret.

MORE: Trump's attorneys seek to invalidate appointment of special prosecutor Jack Smith

Nauta also wrote a message to De Oliveira on July 7 that said "Coming down to FL soon" with shushing emojis to indicate the visit be kept quiet, according to another text message described by sources.

De Oliveira initially told investigators that he had no knowledge of Trump's trip to Florida -- but the special counsel has evidence that supports the allegation De Oliveira was well aware of Trump's travel plans, corroborated in part by security camera footage that shows Trump and De Oliveira together, according to sources familiar with De Oliveira's meetings with investigators.

De Oliveira later told investigators he recalled seeing the former president very briefly during that trip, sources said.

Smith's interest in the trip adds to the list of instances in which investigators appeared to suspect Trump was seeking to obstruct their probe.

Last month, a court filing from Smith's team revealed additional steps prosecutors believed Trump and his associates had taken to obstruct their probe, alleging that after Trump was informed by his attorney of a government subpoena for video footage from Mar-a-Lago, Trump instructed aides to return several boxes they had previously removed from the storage room in the club's basement -- without being caught on camera.

The trip that changed D.C. for me: Where to eat, stay and play in the city

I visited Washington, D.C., for the first time as a kid. No, it wasn’t on a patriotic school trip or anything like that, but I mostly left unimpressed. Maybe it was because we were keeping strict kosher at the time and I didn't have a chance to try the food. Or perhaps it was because my dad heard we were at the World War II museum with my grandmother and scolded us. It could have been something else entirely.

Adulthood has a funny way of changing your perspective on things—perhaps because you get to choose what to do and how to do it, so every trip is just a little more exciting than it was back then. Either way, heading to D.C. as an adult changed my perspective.

The weather was wonderfully hot in July. We had missed the cherry blossoms by a few months which might have been a bummer if not for the beautiful breeze on the water, delicious food that just kept coming and the warm hospitality that we felt at every turn.

Here's what we ate , what we did and where we stayed, so perhaps your next trip to Washington, D.C. is a little more colorful and a hell of a lot tastier.

Where to Eat

Federalist Pig : I don’t know about you, but I’m a brisket girly through and through. But the folks at the Federalist Pig served up a tray with a little bit of everything, leaving us with unexpected favorites. The ribs were exceptional, and I don't usually like ribs! We put the sticky garlic sauce on everything, and it just took all the smoked goodness to the next level. The sausage and chicken were deciduous, too.

Oyster Oyster : If you turn your nose up at a vegetarian restaurant, trust me when I tell you that you must try Oyster Oyster. This Michelin-starred restaurant makes vegetables simply shine. Every bite has so much thought put into every detail, from the English peas with kohlrabi and vegan bread made with beets and served with a marigold “butter” to my favorite dish of the night, a crunchy fried graffiti eggplant topped with eggplant stew and fennel, Be sure to make your reservations well in advance, as this popular DC restaurant fills up quickly, and you definitely don’t want to miss your chance to fall in love with vegetables. Oyster Oyster offers a vegetarian and vegan menu, with or without an oyster course.

Ilili : The vibes at Ilili are immaculate! Located at the Warf, my wife, Morgan, and I had brunch at the Lebanese restaurant while we were in DC. The customer service was top-notch, and the food was a great alternative to the more typical “American” brunch. Our brunch order included hummus topped with lamb confit and served with pita, fatayer stuffed with akkawi and feta cheese, served with a pear salad, and green and black Lebanese olives with citrus and thyme. Whatever you do, be sure to end your meal with a scoop of black sesame ice cream. It’s so good.

Bresca : If you love French food, be sure to dine at Bresca, a contemporary French Bistro with regional influences. As you might expect at a French restaurant, the fluffy brioche loaf served with butter was a showstopper and shouldn’t be missed. The service at Bresca stood out in all the right ways. I'm not really a fan of French food, and while Bresca didn't change my opinion, the thought and creativity that went into every bite were crystal clear. Note that if you’ll be dining on a Saturday, Bresca strictly serves its tasting menu, which is what we enjoyed.

Cranes :Barcelona-born Chef Pepe Moncayo turned his passion for Spanish and Japanese food into Cranes, a fusion restaurant marrying the two cuisines — quite successfully, I might add. From tempura-battered fish to local morels, every dish was interesting, challenging your perception of what should be any specific way. Get the “omakase” tasting menu and try a little bit of a lot of dishes. And the desserts, balancing texture and complex flavor, are simply perfect.

Eaton Hotel : If you’re looking for a sterile hotel that does nothing more than serve as a place for travelers to lay their heads, then the Eaton Hotel probably isn’t for you. While you’ll certainly find the rooms comfortable and the hospitality admirable, where the Eaton Hotel shines is in its activism and community programming. Katherin Lo, founder of the D.C. and Hong Kong-based Eaton, envisioned the hotels to function as a third space.

At least from the outside, their business model is admirable — a focus on creating a space for the D.C. community to gather, create and be authentically themselves.

Grab an iced coffee from Baker’s Daughter and one of the yummy jam bars for the perfect midday pick-me-up. The hotel is home to the Allegory , a unique speakeasy where the very drinks and walls tell a story. But our favorite bar functioned as a waiting room for the Alagory, called the Library. The music was incredible, people were dancing, and it was an all-around good time.

Four Seasons : As you would expect from a Four Seasons, the service at the Georgetown hotel was top-notch. Beds are always my nemesis (mostly because a crappy bed can easily ruin my vacation if I just can’t sleep) but our bed at the Four Seasons was super comfortable, and the water pressure was enviable. It was a lovely stay. For some reason, we struggled to find good oysters in DC, but the steakhouse at the Four Seasons  delivered! We ordered them with the duck fat fries, which were a home run, too.

Things to Do

U.S. National Bonsai & Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum : Can I admit I’m not the biggest fan of museums? Between the stolen artifacts and questionable historical information, I just can’t enjoy the experience. But an outdoor museum featuring Bonsai and Penjing? Sign me up! You might catch the caretakers tending to the trees and a little frog here and here. Be sure to leave time to explore the Arboretum as well, something we wish we did. Oh! There are koi fish, too.

Shop Made in DC :Trying to squeeze some shopping into your vacation? Definitely stop by the Shop Made in DC, which has four locations in the DC area. The shop features over 200 creators and 5,000 items, all made by artisans, small businesses, artists, and creators in the DC area.

Get on the Water - Some folks are beach people, and some, including myself, are water people. Get me on the water in a boat, canoe, tube, or literally anything else that floats, and I’m a happy camper. Sea Suite Cruises offers many different ways to get on the water, from pontoon paddle boats and Tiki boats, which are good for a group, to retro boats with an electric engine you can man all on your own, perfect for couples. The customer service is phenomenal, and it’s just a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

ARTECHOUSE : Need to get out of the rain or hide from the sun for a little while? Stop by ARTECHOUSE for a mesmerizing experience, mashing art and technology. Entering the exhibit, you find yourself in a room blanketed with a digital screen that doesn’t stop moving. You’re literally in the middle of the art, and your perspective changes a bit, and you shift where you’re looking. People sit on the floor, walk around, lie down like they’re sunbathing, and just take in the experience. It’s a little hard to explain, but if you like immersive experience, tech, and art, give ARTECHOUSE a try.

'Captain' Hoyt Davis received the surprise of a lifetime from his daughter, Kim, and his son-in-law, Josh.

The 92-year-old is attending the College World Series for the first time this weekend.

"I said, 'You're kidding me?' and they said, 'No!'" recalled Davis. "They pulled a surprise on me and I'm still surprised that I'm here."

"As you get older, you look back in life and you realize there might have been some things that you weren't able to do," said Josh McCurry. "I made a point to jot down a few of the highlights and try to check off some of those boxes for him."

Davis has already crossed off items on his bucket list, including a trip to the Panama Canal, an Alaskan cruise and now Omaha, which looks a little different than the last time he was in town in 1950.

"I've seen a lot of it on television and these boys are really playing," said Davis.

During Davis' baseball playing days, he received a tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals.

"The first pitch, I hit it up in the bleachers but it was a foul ball," Davis joked.

He also served his country in the Korean War with the United States Air Force.

His career forged a bond with his son-in-law, Josh, through their mutual love of flying. That bond grew stronger in 2018 when Josh lost his father.

"The Captain definitely holds a special place in my heart and I would do anything for him and that's why we're here," said McCurry.

Stand by me? Vladimir Putin's remaining allies

Russian leader Vladimir Putin's recent visit to Vietnam reinforced a pattern that has emerged since he invaded Ukraine: His allies these days are those who rule by force.

After multiple Western sanctions against Russia and an International Criminal Court's arrest warrant against  Vladimir Putin  for the  invasion  of  Ukraine , the Russian leader's international movements have been limited.

Putin, who won a fifth term as president in a March election that was neither free nor fair, has since made five international visits: to Belarus, Uzbekistan, China, North Korea and now to Vietnam.

Although support for Russia on the international stage means risking  sanctions , Putin can still count on several stalwart and outspoken allies. DW has compiled a list of Russia's key supporters — those Putin can still rely on, and from whom he can call in favors if necessary. The list reveals just how internationally isolated  Russia  is.

Main trade partner  China  announced a "no limits" partnership with Russia before the invasion of Ukraine and has since doubled down on that, despite the negative impact it might have on China's economy and international image.

China's stance on the Ukraine war is far from neutral. Its  alleged diplomatic efforts to convince countries not to attend the recent Swiss peace summit  on Ukraine, to which the aggressor, Russia, was not invited, is just one indication. China's absence was also noticeable.

During the conflict, the Chinese have done their best to keep Russia's economy afloat as well as serve as an intermediate state for sanctioned  military goods needed to keep the Russian war machine going .

Communist China sees Russia as a strategic partner to counter a world order set by the US and its allies. Putin visited China this May, and  Xi Jinping  went to Russia last year in a boost to already  warm relations .

North Korea

North Korea , under leader Kim Jong Un, may be isolated from the world but is nevertheless one of the countries to have  struck an alliance with Russia and Putin . It recently signed  a defense partnership  cementing what North Korean dictator Kim called a powerful "alliance," including the pledge of mutual defense should either country come under attack.

Russia needs all the military aid it can get, and highly militarized North Korea is one country that  will supply Russia, no questions asked . For Kim, any ally is better than no ally.

North Korea has been a foremost supporter of Russia's war in Ukraine. Whenever the United Nations tables resolutions aimed at condemning or stopping Russia's actions in Ukraine, North Korea has, unlike China, always voted against them.

Belarus , Russia's closest and most devoted ally — some might even say, a "puppet state" controlled by Russia — has multiple treaties and agreements with Russia, its biggest economic partner.

It's fair to say Belarus relies on Russia on many levels, from oil and gas imports to economic subsidies.

Russian troops and military equipment are regularly stationed in the country, and it was one of the staging grounds for Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.  Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko  has allowed Russia to position nuclear weapons in the country.

Iran , like Russia, is under  heavy international sanctions  from Western countries. The two countries have a strong economic and military alliance. According to United States intelligence, Russia and Iran noticeably ramped up military cooperation after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Iran has supplied Russia with drones and ammunition, which are critical for Russia's military on the battlefront. One of Putin's rare international visits after the invasion in 2022 was to Iran.

After the  death of Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi  in May, Putin sent his condolences and said he saw him as a reliable partner who made a huge contribution to fostering friendly relations between the two countries.

Syria is Russia's stronghold in the Middle East, and the country's president , Bashar Assad , is a big fan of Putin.  Syria  relies heavily on Russian military support: Russia has established a regular military presence in the country to help its leader deal with the  ongoing civil war .

Assad has said the war in Ukraine was a "correction of history and restoration of balance which was lost in the world after the breakup of the Soviet Union." Syria, similarly to Belarus and North Korea, has voted against UN resolutions aimed at persuading Russia to stop the invasion.

Vietnam and its communist government are the latest country to boost ties with Russia. The country signed a strategic defense agreement with Russia while Putin was on his  Asia tour , during which he tried to improve Russia's international reach and discussed trade, defense and the war in Ukraine.

Vietnam  has shied away from condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine. During the visit, Vietnam's president, To Lam, congratulated Putin on his March reelection and praised him for achieving "domestic political stability."

Putin said strengthening a strategic partnership with Vietnam was one of Russia's priorities.

The Russian strongman is also cultivating like-minded allies in South America, including in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Cuba

Cuba and Russia have longstanding, historical ties.  The Caribbean island under the rule of a communist dictatorship has cooperated with Russia since the early days of the Cold War. They maintained and even increased their economic, cultural and military ties after the Soviet Union crumbled.

Whenever Russia feels compelled to respond to US moves, it sends its military to Washington's backyard in a show of force reminiscent of the Cold War era. It did so earlier this month, when a  fleet of Russian warships reached Cuba  ahead of planned military exercises in the Caribbean less than two weeks after US President Joe Biden  authorized the use of US-supplied weapons   in Ukraine to strike inside Russia .

Nicaragua

Nicaragua  is another stronghold for Putin in the Caribbean and another authoritarian country he can rely on. The country's leader, Daniel Ortega, has allowed Nicaragua to be a military outpost for Russia in Central America, inviting Putin's troops into the country with open arms in 2022.

Ortega tends to go along with everything Russia says. Along with the already mentioned countries, Nicaragua also voted against the UN resolution to stop the war in Ukraine.

Venezuela

Venezuela  is a key ally for Russia and its biggest trade and military partner in Latin America. Under Nicolas Maduro's authoritarian rule, Venezuela has expressed strong support for Russia and its actions around the world.

And that support is reciprocal. When a presidential crisis broke out in 2019, Russia stood behind Maduro's authoritarian regime and vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for new presidential elections in Venezuela.

More recently, Russia and Venezuela announced they would boost cooperation in oil and gas production when Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov  visited the country in late February.

This story was first published on June 20, 2024. It was updated on June 24, 2024 to include Vladimir Putin's allies in Latin and Central America.

Top Travel Insurance Companies Comparison

The best travel insurance companies offer comprehensive coverage options for a wide range of people and needs. For this guide, we looked at coverage options, customizability, and the best companies for specific situations, such as pre-existing conditions.

Here are Business Insider's picks for the best travel insurance companies in 2024.

Best Overall Travel Insurance

Nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide is of the largest players in the travel insurance space, offering nearly endless options for any customer on the travel spectrum, including annual travel insurance plans which can offer frequent travelers the flexibility to "set it and forget it" on their travel insurance coverage.

Nationwide Essential also offers some of the most affordable policies in the market compared to similar plans from competitors, which makes it a great pick for just about anyone. Buyers can discuss bundling options as Nationwide also sells homeowners, auto, pet, and other insurance products. Its travel insurance quoting is just as easy as it has been with other Nationwide insurance products.

Best Travel Insurance Runner-Up

Axa assistance usa.

AXA offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

While add-ons are limited and rental car coverage is not included by default on cheaper plans, AXA is a perfect fit for travelers who don't plan to drive (or who already hold a travel credit card with rental car coverage), and don't need any additional bells and whistles.

Read our AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Cruises

Travel guard.

AIG is well-known insurance provider, and a great fit for travelers who want to ensure that they can get their money back in the event of canceled or interrupted travel plans.

While the company's policies can be pricey compared to its competitors, the high medical and evacuation limits make AIG a solid choice for older travelers who value peace of mind and simplicity over highly customizable plans that may be bolstered with medical upgrades.

Read our AIG Travel Guard review .

Best Travel Insurance for Reputation

C&f travel insured.

While every travel insurance company has negative reviews about its claims process, C&F Travel Insured 's claims process has a consistent stream of positive reviews. One customer wrote that C&F processed a claim within 48 hours. Additionally, C&F regularly responds to customer reviews within one business week, making reviews a consistent way to reach the company.

Additionally, in C&F's fine print, it mentions that any claims that take more than 30 days to pay out will begin to accrue interest at 9% APY.

C&F's reputation isn't the only thing to speak highly of. It offers an array of add-ons uncommon in the travel insurance industry, such as Interruption for Any Reason insurance and CFAR coverage for annual plans. C&F also offers discounts for children on its Protector Edge plan and free coverage on its Protector plan.

Read our C&F Travel Insured review .

Best Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Conditions

Tin leg travel insurance.

Tin Leg is a great fit for travelers with medical issues in particular. Seven of Tin Leg's eight travel plans include coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 15 days of your initial trip payment.

Thanks to coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as well as for potential COVID-19 infection while traveling, this company offers some of the best financial investment options for travelers who are or will be exposed to higher health risks and issues.

Read our Tin Leg Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Worldtrips travel insurance.

WorldTrips has affordable premiums, highly customizable add-ons, and generous coverage for core categories of travel insurance. All this makes it a great option for digital nomads, students studying abroad and backpackers.

However, travelers should keep in mind that plans are not particularly flexible, and coverage amounts are limited unless you plan ahead to pay for the areas and amounts that you need.

Read our WorldTrips Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Affordability

Trawick international travel insurance.

Trawick is another insurance provider with robust medical travel insurance that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company offers one of the most generous medical evacuation policies in the market, although travelers will need to remember to add on rental car coverage if they need it.

Read our Trawick Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips

Travelex travel insurance.

Travelex offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Best for Adventure Traveling

World nomads travel insurance.

World Nomads distinguishes itself from others by covering over 300 sports and activities, from skydiving to golf. Additionally, its one of the few travel insurance companies that allow you to purchase after departing for your destination. However, you'll have a 72-hour waiting period before coverage kicks in.

That said, World Nomads doesn't have the highest coverage limits compared to its competitors on this list. It also doesn't have the most customization, only providing two plans to choose from with no options for pre-existing condition coverage. Yet, World Nomads still stands out for its sports coverage and post-departure coverage.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

For adventure sports coverage, you'll want to look at World Nomads , which covers over 300 sports.

Jennifer lopez enjoys dinner in italy without ben affleck, jennifer lopez dines with friends at italian restaurant ... ben who.

Jennifer Lopez continued her vacation in Italy without hubby Ben Affleck ... enjoying a Saturday dinner with a couple of friends at a swanky restaurant.

The singer/actress and her two pals – a man and a woman – arrived at the Ristorante Da Vincenzo in Positano for an upscale Italian feast last evening.

We're told Jen and Co. sat down at a table outside to celebrate a birthday for someone in the group. (In case you’re wondering, J Lo’s b’day is next month so it probably wasn’t her little soirée.)

Our sources say 2 security guards kept watch over the trio as they spent a few hours dining on yummy Italian dishes. J Lo, we're told, was in great spirits, smiling, laughing and chatting with her buds.

TMZ obtained a short video of J Lo's night out, showing her seated with her friends at the table surrounded by singing staff. J Lo was all dolled up and looked amazing as she took a bite of food from her fork.

Meanwhile, back in L.A., Ben has been riding around on his motorcycle with his son, Samuel , with J Lo nowhere in sight. In fact, Ben hasn't physically seen J Lo in a number of days – ever since she took off for Italy.

Before that, the couple was seen stepping out together to attend family events , while currently living apart in separate L.A. abodes. They're also trying to quietly sell their Beverly Hills home a year after buying it for $60 million.

What's more ... Jen has been spotted around town scoping out various properties for sale.

Of course, none of this is a good sign for their relationship.

7 Memory-Making Mother-Daughter Trips To Bond with Your Teen

trip with me

A mother-daughter relationship is precious and sometimes precarious. Nothing helps strengthen the bonds between a mom and daughters more than participating in activities shoulder-to-shoulder and sharing new experiences. Mother-daughter trips are a perfect way to accomplish both — and those long hours of travel time can be the perfect way to enjoy quality time and get even a recalcitrant teen to open up.

I started taking mother-daughter day trips with my girl when she was very young and we began lengthening those to mother-daughter vacations when she was six or seven. Over the years, our annual mother-daughter getaways have become a treasured tradition.

This precious time together has become absolutely priceless as she moves through her teenage years. Over the years, we have tried all sorts of trips (see my tips for planning a mother-daughter trip ) and each of them has hit home at various stages of her growth. I wanted to share a few of our favorites to give you memorable mother-daughter trip ideas to use in your own planning.

7 Best Mother Daughter Trips

I understand that sometimes it is hard to pull off a family vacation, let only a one-on-one trip. It is definitely easier for me because I only have one child. But I still think it is worth the effort, even if it can’t happen every year. These trips build a foundation for a strong relationship even when your daughter leaves home and goes off on her own.

1. The Adventure Trip

Hanging off the Mt Norquay

Teens love to be active and often seek thrills that we as moms would rather avoid. But I can tell you from experience that jumping in and adventuring together will gain you respect, empower you both, and generate stories for years to come.

Even if your trip isn’t ALL about adventure, it is easy to build a few adventurous activities into your trip. That can be paddle boarding, kayaking, horseback riding, zip lining, or tree-top adventure courses. Of course, you can hike just about anywhere but for epic views try one of the Utah National Parks .

Some of our favorite adventures include:

  • White water rafting in Oregon
  • Rock climbing in Smith Rock State Park in Central Oregon (Central Oregon is a great place for adventure — hiking, caving, rafting, climbing, tubing, and more.)
  • Hiking in the Canadian Rockies (a trip that also included horseback riding and the exhilarating day climbing the Via Ferrata on Mount Norquay.)
  • Hiking and horseback riding in the Black Hills and Badlands National Park in South Dakota

2. The Wildlife Trip

Mother daughter trips -- seeing the wild ponies in Chincoteague

Tweens tend to be animal lovers and get excited about up close and personal animal encounters . We are both animal lovers and we have a lot of bucket list dreams that involve polar bears, pandas, and penguins.

While some of those dreams are a little inaccessible on the current budget, it is easy to build wildlife sightings or animal experiences into a mother-daughter trip.

For example, after reading the book Misty of Chincoteague together for a mother-daughter book club, I figured that a mother-daughter trip to see the wild ponies of Chincoteague would be a perfect idea. We huddled together against the cold wind and spray of water on our boat ride around the island, but soon we were both beaming when we spied our first pony herds.

Some of our favorite wildlife trips include:

  • Wildlife viewing in Yellowstone National Park and learning about dinosaurs in Bozeman, Montana
  • Watching the bison, burros, and prairie dogs in the Black Hills, SD
  • Bear-watching cruise excursion in Alaska
  • Dude ranch vacation
  • Drive through safaris and zoos

3. The Cultural Trip

Blue Gate of the Fes Medina

If you are looking for something more adventurous, that also wraps in culture, education, and yes some wildlife (in the form of a llama hike!), I would encourage you to look at GOOD Travel . This responsible travel company is founded by a mom and they run mother-daughter trips to Peru each summer.

Every aspect of the trip – from the hotels to the llama hikes to the chocolate making – has been designed to ensure that the local community, economy, and environment benefit from your visit. So it is a great way to have an amazing bonding experience (with other moms and daughters) in a positive way.

I think this would be perfect for a big birthday or moving up from grade school to middle school, middle school to high school, or even a graduation trip . If you sign up , be sure to note that you were referred by WE3TRAVEL (my affiliate code) and you will receive a 10% discount .

Of course, there are countless cultural trips you can take from learning about native culture in your own backyard to exploring a new part of the globe. One of the most immersive cultural trips we have taken as a family was to Morocco .

4. The Big City Trip

girl overlooking river walk in Milwaukee at sunset

If wildlife and adventure aren’t your things, maybe a mother-daughter weekend getaway to a big city — like New York City, Los Angeles , or San Francisco for shopping, eating, and visiting the theater and museums is more your deal. These trips are great for all ages and can even become an annual tradition as most cities have so much to offer and interests change as your daughter gets older.

One of our first mother-daughter getaways was to Baltimore, Maryland. Visiting a new city gives you a chance to explore together and share new experiences. We had a very special time wandering the city streets together and it allowed her a more active role in choosing which attractions and restaurants we visited.

I know that not only have these trips given us fun memories together, but it has also taught her skills about navigating a city, using public transportation, and how to keep yourself safe.

Some of our favorite U.S. cities to visit include:

  • Nashville – music, murals, and food
  • Atlanta – food, Coke, Aquarium, and history
  • Milwaukee – festivals, art, and lakeside fun
  • Minneapolis – Prince, shopping, art, and waterfalls
  • Chicago – theater, views, and museums
  • Philadelphia – history, zoo, and cheesesteaks

5. The Educational Trip

I am a man mural in Memphis

We spend a lot of time teaching our kids, but when you have an opportunity to learn together you are both on the same level and have another shared experience to reference and discuss.

We have taken a lot of educational trips together visiting historical sites, museums, and living history museums. Not every trip is themed around an educational topic, some just include an activity. But others, like our Civil Rights road trip , have been designed for a purpose and had a profound impact.

I think ages 8-14 are ideal for this type of trip. Some of our favorite educational destinations include:

  • Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown (paired with a fun day at Water Country USA )
  • Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Gettysburg including the National Battlefield — this was one of the first times that I could see her really taking in and processing everything that we learned and observing the impact that it had
  • Memphis including an African-American History tour and visiting the National Civil Rights Museum

6. The Spa Trip

Sierra Grande spa couples massage room

I thought spa resorts would require my daughter to be sixteen (and some do), but these days you can find spas that offer services for tweens and teens — from chocolate pedicures, blow outs, or massages for moms and daughters.

I’ll never forget her dreamy smile after her first massage! What a privilege to share this fun “first” with her. There have been a few times when we have added a spa experience to our trip, and I can’t wait to plan another spa getaway. I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to bribe her to go on a mother-daughter spa weekend even when she has moved out!

Our favorite spa experiences have been at:

  • Sierra Grande in Truth & Consequences, New Mexico
  • The Beach Plum Spa at the John Carver Inn in Plymouth, Massachusetts

7. The College Trip

Now that I have had a senior, we have added a new kind of mother-daughter trip to our repertoire — the college visit trip. While these can be stressful on both sides, and we don’t like to think about sending them off into the world, this is an incredible opportunity to be involved in one of the most important decisions your daughter will make so far in her life.

Sometimes, she may even listen to your point of view or gain some wisdom from your experience! But don’t make it all college and no play. Here are some great tips for turning a college trip into a mini-vacation. And as we have crisscrossed the country college shopping, I’ve also added some guides to visiting campuses on my sister site, Your Time to Fly, including:

  • Planning a college visit to Washington DC
  • Visiting Stanford
  • Tips for visiting University of Michigan , University of Wisconsin-Madison , and University of Colorado-Boulder

These trips have created a bank full of cherished memories — for both of us! Even though planning a mother-daughter getaway with your tween or teen daughter may sound daunting or impossible, I encourage you to give it a try. Start with a day trip or shared experience and go from there.

Need more ideas? What about a cooking class, TV or movie location tour, food-themed trip, attending a sporting event, going to a musical performance, or something else that grabs her interest? The best mother-daughter vacations are ones where she has a say in what you do.

I would love to hear your ideas, suggestions, and experiences. Join our private travel with teens Facebook group !

Love these ideas. I haven’t done a spa trip with Cassie yet, and I definitely want to plan one. Gonna check into Beach Plum!

I’m in awe of your Norquay, Banff, via ferrata adventure. I’m a bit afraid of heights and that ferrata route is super challenging. Good on you for conquering it!

thank you!! I had my moments but when your teen is encouraging you, you don’t chicken out. I sure was exhausted and sore that night though!

Love this! I especially like the adventure trip idea, and not just because it features Crater Lake and Smith Rock…in my backyard!

Mother-daughter trips have been SO GOOD for my daughter and me in terms of strengthening our relationship and just plain having a whole lot of fun!

It sounds like so much fun! Eventually, I want to do a Jane Austen tour with her, but I think, for now, she’d rather we go to an adventure playground. Mother-daughter trips have been SO GOOD for my daughter and me in terms of strengthening our relationship and just plain having a whole lot of fun! One of my favorite travel memories was traveling with my mom as an adult child of 25 to Paris for the first time.

This is lovely, my mother and I did trips like this in my teens and now that I’m in my 30s we are doing them again. I took my mum on a northern lights trip recently which was so nice. It will be great when the tables turn and your daughter plans the trip and takes you!

I just went to Egypt with my daughter and it was amazing.

Having only just started in the “tween” world (she is 9) i am learning that i have to do special things with her, so loved this post for giving me inspo.

I’m so glad to hear it!

I traveled a lot with my daughter solo when she was smaller. Now that she’s bigger I think I need to plan another trip!

Love this! I especially like the adventure trip idea, and not just because it features Crater Lake and Smith Rock…in my backyard!

We loved that area. Crater Lake may be my favorite national park so far.

I like the SPA trip!

I haven’t done a mother-daughter trip yet with my 5-year old, but I’m hoping to do it this year before her THIRD little brother arrives! 🙂 It sounds like so much fun! Eventually I want to do a Jane Austen tour with her, but I think for now, she’d rather we go to an adventure playground. 🙂

A literary tour would definitely be a fun idea

Love these! Ours tend to be anything around food, coffee, or chocolate… 😉

Oh that reminds me of a chocolate tasting I did with her!

Cute! I love the photo of you two in your road trip t-shirts. I live in a house full of males, so I take girls-only trips with my mom. We love it.

Thanks! I imagine mother son trips could be very fun too! It is really just about doing things together.

Love this idea so much. One of my favorite travel memories was travelling with my mom as an adult child of 25 to Paris for the first time. It was a fantastic trip that I wish we could have done more often!

That sounds special! I hope my tween wants to keep our tradition going through her teen years.

I absolutely admire your long distance road trips with Hannah! For now, I try to always go to a nails “spa” with my 6-yr old:) and last year for Mother’s Day we had a yoga teacher come to our house for a mother-daughter private class. This year- we repeated the experience DIY style cause we already know the moves:)

That sounds so sweet! We would love mother-daughter yoga!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Hannah is just darling, first of all. I know Lucia would love the wild ponies of Chincoteague (so would I) and Gettysburg. You’ve given me some great ideas!

Yay!! And thank you!

I have only done city trips alone with my girls (I guess I’m most comfortable navigating cities by myself). I think a wildlife one sounds great though – I would love to see the Chincoteague ponies!

Wildlife ones are great for animal lovers

My favorite mother-daughter trip would be to the spa. My daughter is super girly and loves getting her toes, nails and hair done.

Mother Daughter Horseback camp at the Sugar and Spice Ranch at the Cowboy Capital of the world… Bandera TX!

Oh that sounds so fun and absolutely perfect for a horse loving girl too!
