The Best Camping in Georgia, From Stone Mountain to Savannah

The 10 Best Spots to Go Camping in Georgia

Camping in Georgia—whether you're headed for the swamps or mountaintops—offers a break from everyday life amid picturesque landscapes. That's what Atlanta residents Christian Ahmed and Casey Budd were looking for when they started  Connected Camping , an overnight outdoor wellness experience for fellow nature lovers like themselves.

“Even before the pandemic, it was really hard for people to find time to just slow down and nourish themselves,” says Ahmed. Adds Budd, “I've always had a love for nature and outdoors and wanted to experience what it feels like to connect on a different level outside.”

Connected Camping, now in its fourth year and open to the public, brings participants together to sleep in tents, build a campfire, share meals together, and do breath work exercises. It's just one of the ways Georgians are getting outdoors, but it's no doubt part of a growing interest in enjoying public lands and spending time outside.

We tapped Budd and Ahmed, who have camped extensively throughout the state, to tell us about their favorite Georgia campsites. From state parks with RV campsites, to upscale camps with yurts for rent, there's something on every end of the spectrum here—all across the state of Georgia. Below, the 10 best spots to go camping Georgia.

Providence Canyon in Southwest Georgia USA.

Camping at Providence Canyon State Park is for those who prefer to rough it.

Providence Canyon State Park

Stalwart County

Sometimes referred to as Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon State Park ’s most notable features are the massive gullies that expose patterns of red, orange, and white sand. The entirety of the park stretches over 1,000 acres and the  gullies, as deep as 150 feet, were caused by poor farming techniques in the 1800s. Seasoned hikers will enjoy the strenuous trek to the canyon’s backcountry campsites , while the three pioneer campsites sit closer to picnic areas. You can explore the depths of the canyons up close by taking the Canyon Loop trail, or see views of the top of the canyons from the rim trail. There are no cabins or RV stations here—Providence Canyon State Park is ideal for those who prefer to rough it.

This park is popular, especially during the summer, so book at least two months in advance.

Between the park’s  seasonal festivals and outdoor recreation, there’s a lot to see and do. Campers can catch a firework show on the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend, see life-size dinosaur replicas, or take a boat out on Stone Mountain Lake. If you forget anything at home? Just stop by Stone Mountain’s General Store.

The biggest draw to Red Top Mountain State Park is Allatoona Lake, a reservoir that spans more than 12,000 acres with plenty of room for water sports, fishing, and swimming, surrounding the large wooded peninsula constituting the park. There, you’ll find 15 miles of trails, including a paved trail suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Red Top Mountain, once an important mining area, was named for the soil’s rich color caused by high iron-ore content. The lodging options range from yurts ($115 per night) to RV and trailer camps ($45 per night) to two bedroom cottages ($225 per night).

Cloudland Canyon State Park

Cloudland Canyon State Park has waterfalls and sweeping forest views.

Cloudland Canyon State Park

Rising Fawn

Both Ahmed and Budd say that Cloudland Canyon State Park , in Rising Fawn, Georgia, is on their bucket list of campsites. “The pictures are beautiful,” said Budd. “All those waterfalls!” It’s true: at Cloudland Canyon, there’s a spectacular view in every direction. From sandstone cliffs and waterfalls to dense forests with deer and Red Tail hawks, the opportunity for nature photography is abundant. The park’s Waterfalls Trail is considered strenuous—a 1.8 mile round trip with 600 stairsteps one way—but worth it for the views of Cherokee and Hemlock falls. Cloudland Canyon State Park has over 70 campsites for tents and RVs.\

Instead of sandy beaches, picture miles of walking trails through maritime forests and salt marshes. The campground is situated between live oaks and under a canopy of Spanish moss, offering more than 80 campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs. There’s plenty to do at Skidaway: don’t leave without visiting the boardwalk and observation tower, and kids will enjoy the interpretive center, where they’ll find a reptile room, birding books, and a 20-foot replica of a giant ground sloth.

The refuge has seven overnight shelters as well as two islands in the swamp interior that you can reach by canoe to pitch your tent. Fun fact: there are approximately 15,000 alligators living in the Okefenokee Swamp.

Connected Camping is currently holding retreats at  Brook’s Lake , found just 25 miles east of Atlanta. The 50-acre lake is surrounded by grassy plains perfect for camping and the site offers both RV parking and tent rentals, plus there’s a walking trail on the property.

“It’s one of our favorite locations because of how diverse the land is,” says Ahmed. “Both sunset and sunrise over this huge lake are beautiful, and the owner of the property is so welcoming to groups.” Budd says it's also nice and approachable for beginners. “You don’t have to go too far from the city, there are bathrooms. It’s not scary camping!”

There are also over 20 miles of trails, including a 2.5 mile trail on the rocky gorge floor—and a suspension bridge sways overhead, offering great views of the six different waterfalls found in the park. Ahmed says Tallulah Gorge is perfect for anyone who wants a quick excursion to “one of the most beautiful places in Georgia.” Hot tip: Views at Tallulah Gorge State Park are particularly scenic during fall when the leaves start to change color.

At Hostel in the Forest “camping” can mean anything from pitching a tent to staying in a tree house.

At Hostel in the Forest, “camping” can mean anything from pitching a tent to staying in a tree house.

Hostel in the Forest

For a unique camping experience, Ahmed suggests  Hostel in the Forest , a commune style campsite found two miles off Hwy 95 in Brunswick. The hostel, started in 1975, offers treehouses, two-story bunkhouses, and common areas spread over 140 acres of forests and wetlands. “You can get as raw as you want to,” Ahmed says. “If you want the luxury of a tree house or if you actually want to camp at one of the lakes, you can.” The Hostel requires a $10 lifetime membership fee, but the cost for adults is just $40 per night. The site bills itself as “a spiritual retreat center and educational facility,” complete with optional wellness workshops and events such as mindfulness sessions, drum circles, and acoustic concerts included in the price. Everyone staying at the hostel is asked to help out by doing a daily chore, such as working in the gardens, feeding the chickens, or sweeping common areas. Consider this your community-based camping experience.

South Georgia Campgrounds - Sea Camp Campground

19. Sea Camp Campground

Cumberland Island GA • (912) 882-4336 • Official Website

The Sea Camp Campground on Cumberland Island isn’t for everyone, because it’s only accessible by boat. But, for nature lovers seeking a sense of serenity and solitude, that’s also what makes this an ideal place for camping in GA.

Note that the Sea Camp dock is a half-mile away from the campgrounds , so it’s a hike-in spot as well. In terms of amenities, it has flush toilets, drinking water, a (cold) shower, and a dish-washing sink.

Individual campsites are equipped with a fire pit with a grill and a picnic table, as well as food storage.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is perhaps the most remote camping in South Georgia. In fact, only 300 people are allowed on the island at a time, and campers are restricted to no more than 7 nights.

This protected area has beaches, marshes, and freshwater lakes, plus two museums and the Plum Orchard  mansion.

June 26, 2023, I signed for and believed to be purchasing a 2022 Thor Ace. When the title came back, it was in fact a 2021. The manager assured me that was wrong when in fact, it is a 2021 with issues. After contacting the BBB, the dealership sent 2 arm rests (which do not fit) that were missing. to this day, March, 27, 2024, I'm still missing arm rest. I was advised by a lawyer to request a Revocation of Acceptance, In which I did. Then the manager decides to offer me a different, cheaper 2023 Thor Ace model. While in negotiation with Travel Camp's manager, we couldn't come to an agreement as to how the exchange would take place so, I told him to proceed with the Revocation of Acceptance. He in turn contacted his corporate office who was of no assistance and from there, all negotiation and communication seized when I requested to go to someone in higher authority. After the BBB received no response from Travel Camp on my complain, I was told that Camping World bought them out and to contact them for assistance. When I first contacted Camping World, they told me that they did buy them out and I was given a number to call for the person in charge of dealing with the issues they were handling from Travel Camp. The person who called me, which I won't disclose her name here, told me they purchased Travel Camp and their inventory but, not their issue. Now I am attempting to get assistance from the State Attorneys Office. Good luck to anyone who decides to deal with either of these companies. I have all emails, texts, and names so, let's see where this goes and if anyone decides to do the right thing by this consumer. I will bring any updates back here.

We recently sold our RV with the assistance of TravelCamp. Selling the RV was quick and easy. However over a month later, we are still getting the run around waiting for the money that is owed to us. We have gotten the run around by Christy Gaughf, she has repeatedly told us she sent us paperwork to be signed (she never did - we had to travel nearly 2 hours in both directions to come in to sign the paperwork), she also stated that she never received the money from the purchaser's bank. However , the purchaser's bank did pay off our loan, and did send them the money. So we are currently being billed by them for minor repairs, which we agreed would be paid when we recieved the $5500.00 from the sale. One star doesn't even convey the frustration we are feeling, defintely we are feeling we got ripped off.

My husband and I purchased our 5th wheel from this dealership in July 2022. Firstly, they were supposed to deliver it to us in clean condition; it was not, yet they charged us a cleaning fee. Fast forward to Feb 2023, the refrigerator runs hot, we contact Travelcamp's service dept telling them the issue and they require us to bring the unit back for service instead of sending out a service tech, yet they could have. (We found that out later.) We bring the unit there on the 20th, their service dept examines the unit and determines that the refrigerator needs replacing, but their service dept did not report the issue to the manufacturer until March 10th after numerous calls and a couple of visits. It is now April 21st and we still do not have a working refrigerator! Why? Because there was a breakdown in communication between Travelcamp and the manufacturer where they scheduled an appointment for the refrigerator to be replaced on the 12th, but the company they contracted to perform the service said the appointment was for the 20th, and NOT for a replacement, but for service. So we take our 5th wheel on the 12th to find out we have to bring it back on the 20th. Meanwhile there was a recall on the awnings, so while the unit was there, the service dept was to inspect them to ensure they were not damaged. After we return home from the service appt, (Without a working refrigerator!) we tried to extend the awnings, but now they don't work. I do NOT recommend purchasing anything from this place! The service staff exuded a nonchalant, apathetic and unapologetic attitude and they had plenty of lame excuses for their handling of our issues. We felt unimportant and disrespected. Incompetence abounds there. Save yourself a headache and don't patronize that place; you will be setting yourself up for a huge disappointment if you do!

May 25, 2023

Hi Schiree, were your issues ever resolved? If not please call our corporate office at 904-368-6322.

Photo of Ted H.

I purchased an rv from this dealership on the 6th of dec 2022 once i signed the papers the dealership wouldn't even talk to me. our initial inspection of the unit uncovered multiple discrepancies and the dealer promised that everything would be taken care of. The unit was delivered on the 12th of dec in the same condition we initially saw it in. when an independent contractor was hired to make repairs he uncovered many more problems such as a hole in the roof, leaky pipes, wet floors appliances not working. the dealership has been unwilling to help resolve the issues and wouldn't even get the paperwork from the sale completed. It was over a month before my trade was paid off and that was after constant phone calls, emails and texts. This is our 6 rv (three 5th wheels and three motorhomes) and without a doubt this dealership has been nothing but a nightmare. we are currently on our way to the manufacturer in hopes they can either repair or replace this unit which is unusable and was knowing sold to us in that condition. I gave 1 star because a negative 5 wasn't a choice.

This Georgia Glamping Resort Sits Among Acres of Pine Trees — and It Has a Private Barrel Sauna, Hot Tubs, and Stunning Sunset Views

The hilltop Dunya Camp sits just 90 minutes from Atlanta.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

travel camp georgia

Courtesy of Dunya Camp

When you think of glamping, the state of Georgia might not immediately come to mind . But these days the glamping trend, which is believed to have started in Scotland in the 16th century before being popularized by African safaris, has spread across the U.S .

One glamping property in northwest Georgia is putting the state’s lush, subtropical landscape — and renowned hospitality — on the map. Dunya Camp is perched on a hilltop and surrounded by 42 acres of pine trees. The landscape, which the Cherokee people called the “enchanted land,” is made up of rolling, tree-covered hills, soft light, and hidden nooks. From the property’s hilltop vantage point, guests can look out over the wild landscape from tents that were situated for sunset viewing .

In this case, the word “tent” is a stretch : Dunya Camp’s six luxury tents are a far cry from the neon, nylon variety. Their safari-style tents all have a king-sized, four-poster bed; antique furniture; and a wood-burning stove. The decor is worldly and bohemian with playful wallpaper, opulent rugs, bold pops of color, and curios. Added perks include on-demand heat and air-conditioning and an indoor kitchen with a mini-fridge, microwave, dishwasher, kettle, and coffee machine. The private bathroom has both a deep soaking tub and a separate shower.

The Dunya Camp interiors may be cozy and luxe, but the real showstopper is found outside on the adjacent upper and lower decks. The two private decks are outfitted with amenities that most glamping properties lack, including a cedar wood hot tub and outdoor shower that entice guests to bathe with a view — or under the stars — in complete privacy. And an outdoor kitchen with a gas grill and side stove, along with a fire pit and loungers. As an upgrade, the higher-tier Sunset Grand Tents also have a private barrel sauna.

All six of the Dunya Camp tents and adjacent decks face west, providing prime sunset views.

The serene, peaceful property is located near Summerville, Georgia, a tiny town known for its agricultural history — first peaches, then strawberries — and the Summerville Steam train ride , which follows the historic train route between Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Summerville.

Most of the camp’s offerings are nature-driven and include activities like forest bathing, walking the on-site labyrinth, dining al fresco, outdoor massage, and yoga classes in the forest. On adventures off-property, guests can explore the waterfall-laden Little River Canyon National Preserve , the James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park , and Paradise Garden , the former home and workplace of Baptist minister and folk artist Howard Finster.

The Dunya Camp property is roughly 90 minutes northwest of Atlanta and an hour south of Chattanooga. To maintain supreme peace and quiet, Dunya Camp has a strict no children under 12 and a no pets policy.
