Deconstructing Travel Town: How to engage merge-2 whales

British developer Magmatic Games' , Travel Town, has already shown it is capable of bringing in some impressive numbers with its merge adventure gameplay where players can discover and work their way through hundreds of levels .

But what has made this merge game stand out from the competition? In this guest post Belka Games lead game designer (RnD) Olga Semykina looks under the hood of Travel Town to deconstruct the game and its inner workings.

What makes Travel Town interesting?

Travel Town is an up-and-coming merge-2 project from a British developer called Magmatic Games. The game started buying traffic in early 2022 and has been making steady progress ever since. An especially impressive performance surge came in early 2023: downloads increased by more than two times, and revenue almost tripled. If the trend was anything to go by, this is just the beginning.

The company initially prioritised Android because it's easier to launch a project marketing-wise. But as of today, the downloads and revenue are distributed almost equally between iOS and Android. That's a typical pattern in the industry. For instance, Love & Pies' sales are split between the platforms 50/50, while Merge Mansion and Gossip Harbor net more revenue from iOS.

Travel Town's primary audience is located in the US. That's an important metric because the US generates more than 50% of the game's revenue. Other major sources of revenue include South Korea, Japan and Europe.

And it's only natural that Japan is on the list because merge games are taking the Japanese market by storm. If we look at Merge Mansion, almost 20% of its revenue comes from Japan.

Here are some of Travel Town's main competitors:

• Merge Mansion
• Gossip Harbor
• Love & Pies

As you can see below, Travel Town has racked up the most downloads, but Merge Mansion still takes up the top spot regarding revenue, with Travel Town placing second.

Merge Mansion was the first to rise to the top of the merge-2 market, and it's been holding its ground ever since. Merge Mansion's competition surpasses it UI/UX-wise, and the game has a pretty niche setting, but the team developed a solid marketing strategy. Meanwhile, Gossip Harbor and Love & Pies are similar to each other in their setting, visuals, events and offers.

But let's take a closer look at Travel Town now. What makes it stand out from among its competitors?

Core and meta game loops

The game's core is standard merge-2 gameplay. Players complete the characters' orders by merging items, earning resources, and using them to construct buildings in the city. An unobtrusive dialogue-based narration accompanies the whole process.

Classic, right? But here's when it gets interesting. You need several types of resources to construct buildings - some of the stages (about one in three) require Tools in addition to the obligatory coins.

Part of the orders help you earn coins, but some come with Toolboxes as a reward. This adds an extra meta game mechanic and lets players develop various strategies by prioritising some orders over others.

Merge chains

Travel Town implements various merge chains, some of which are unique to the game. New merge chains are added as players complete more levels and construct new buildings. Travel Town's competitors mostly use similar merge chains with varying lengths, but Travel Town likes to change things up. Here are some of the chains available in the game:

• Nestled chains -  you create a new generator in the first part of the chain before you can move on.
• Combined chains -  you need to merge items from the two other chains together to get the final item.
• No-energy generators -  they can spawn items in free adjacent cells after a cooldown (for fairness' sake, Love & Pies also has these).
• Charging generator -  it needs five taps to "charge up" before it spawns items, and it can even spawn a "defective" one.

This sort of diversity keeps players engaged and helps balance order difficulty. Short chains bring the players satisfaction for reaching a milestone, and long ones make the reward you get after making a complex item feel like it was worth the effort.

But there's still room for growth - like working on the UX to help players better understand the unusual merge chains. Those bring about a lot of questions in the closed fan community, even among the experienced players.

Balancing orders

Merge games have one of the best retention and engagement rates at lower levels, but both values drop over time. It takes a week with some games and a month with the others. The problem lies within the complex, drawn-out orders that players face as they progress, which require merging high-tier items. Those stall the game because you must keep grinding for days to complete a single quest. And that affects the dynamics. Players realise immediately that they won't make it far during the game session, which saps their motivation. Many people either stop playing entirely at this point or stop making in-game purchases.

Gossip Harbor has a similar problem, as does Love & Pies to a lesser extent. At higher levels, players get just one or two quests, which can be difficult. Travel Town and Merge Mansion both try to solve this issue by balancing orders.

This is how they do it:

• Players always have four orders - three with coin rewards and one with Toolboxes.
• Varying order difficulty helps the game keep its momentum and lets players develop their own strategies.
• There's one difficult order with a big reward.
• One really easy one that takes less than one session to complete.
• Two medium-difficulty ones.

Monetisation

This game is monetised through in-app purchases and ads, focusing on IAP.

The only thing players can buy in the in-game store are Diamonds but offers also let them buy energy. Diamonds can be used to purchase various items, energy, time boosts and more. Here are some lots that stand out:

• Wild Pearl - can be merged with any item.
• Scissors - split an item into two lower-level ones.
• Chests - containing Diamonds, energy, coins, and tools for the meta loop. Players can never tell how many resources they're going to get, so it's a popular and exciting gacha-type feature.

Special offers

While Travel Town isn't overflowing with offers, it doesn't stop the game from making money and even pulling ahead of its competitors.

The game has two types of recurring promos:

LiveOps Offers are launched daily and change once every 24 hours. Besides Diamonds and energy, they usually contain items that are almost impossible to buy otherwise, like chests (usually with Diamonds and energy), Wild Pearls and Scissors.

Out of Energy Offers are displayed every time players with low energy tap out of the pop-up message offering them to buy more energy with Diamonds. You can purchase Diamonds, energy and item packs that way.

What's noteworthy is the price setting. Out of Energy Offers usually don't make the player step out of their comfort zone and are set at their average purchase value. LiveOps Offers, on the other hand, are meant to stimulate players, and the price is always above APV. So even with just those two types of offers, the developers let players choose between small impulse buys and more expensive purchases that include unique items in addition to the standard currencies.

The same types of offers pop up when there's an event with a unique playing board and its own Energy going on. The price setting and rewards are the same with the exception of energy - that resource is event-specific.

It seems like Travel Town would be a good fit for other types of offers, too. Here are some that the other merge-2 games use the most:

• Two or three special reward bundles for the store.
• Endless Offer, Piggy Bank, Battle Pass.

The game shows rewarded ads both to non-paying players and whales, but there's a limit:

• Four ads a day worth 25 energy each (100 energy in total).
• You can buy items right on the merge board, and the exchange rate can be quite lucrative compared to the Gem purchases. These integrated sales points usually perform well because the offers are of high value to the players.

Power boost

Travel Town has an untypical merge-2 game Power Boost that speeds up your progress.

Players can activate a Boost x2, which will make them spend two energy instead of one when they generate items, but at the same time, the spawned items will be level two from the get-go.

This Power Boost is used extensively by Coin Master, MonopolyGO, and other competitors. When players deactivate Boost x2, they feel like they're progressing too slowly in comparison. It makes them want to activate Boost x2 again, even though it expends more energy.

This is also a good way to engage whales. Say, the most expensive $120 pack from the store gets the player 8,000 Diamonds. Even at a low exchange rate of 100 energy per 40 Diamonds, that's 20,000 energy. The player should have the opportunity to spend it fast and without any extra hassle.

Main features and LiveOps

Travel Town focuses on increasing player activity to monetise the game. To achieve that, the developers use various game mechanics and other methods to motivate and put pressure on players. They can be divided into those that affect player activity short-, mid-, and long-term.

Short-term effects

Travel Town puts a lot of effort into increasing short-term player engagement. The game implements various time-pressure mechanics like limited-time quests and boosters. That motivates players to prolong their game sessions and be more active to get the most out of those boosters.

• An extra limited-time order that lets the player earn an additional reward, as well as energy or Diamonds, if it's completed in time.
• A limited-time gift box gets added to one of the orders. If the player manages to complete it in time, they get a gift box alongside the regular reward, and one more gift box appears in another active order. The time limit is set to 15 minutes. It can be a standalone event, but sometimes you get gift boxes as a reward in other events.
• A temporary generator booster that lets you skip generator cooldowns.

Limited-time gift boxes are noteworthy because they prolong game sessions and increase monetisation at the same time. To make the most of a gift box, players must complete as many orders as possible in 15 minutes. And Travel Town has another well-implemented game-of-chance here - the gift can contain any amount of energy from 10 to 200.

Outside of events, there's one more recurring feature that sets the pace of player activity every day. It's the Daily Challenge.

The Daily Challenge quests have several goals: collecting coins (the main objective), merging items, and spending Diamonds.

Players get a reward after completing each quest and an extra one for finishing all of them.

The quests progress simultaneously. The game is balanced in a way that has the next quest 60-90% complete by the time you're done with the current one. This always makes players feel like they need to do "just a little bit more" to complete the next quest.

More than half of the quests get done as players go about their usual gameplay, with no extra effort required, but to complete the remaining 20-40%, they'll have to either be more active and/or pay money.

Quest difficulty scales depending on player activity - more active players get harder quests. The number of quests also changes. It can be anything from nine to 35 a day.

Mid-term effects

The next LiveOps category focuses on increasing mid-term engagement. All of these events alternate and go on for three to four days.

• Milestone events (a lot of other merge-2 games use these, too): Such events have a long progress bar divided into milestones. You get rewards for reaching every milestone and a Grand Prize at the end. The bar fills up as you generate resources. The milestones act as additional micro goals, and event paywalls help with conversion.
• Special merge boards (also used in Merge Mansion): Players get a separate, event-specific merge board with its own merge chains, levels, Energy, and special offers. This lets them spend more money and time in the game while the new milestones and the added time pressure eggs them on.
• Decorations (also used in Gossip Harbor): On top of the usual order rewards, players get some currency they can spend on decorations for a certain location on the map. There are also additional milestone rewards.

Long-term effects

Besides the ongoing event rotation, the game uses albums to increase long-term engagement. It's meant to boost both gaming and payment activity.

The album mechanic here is the same as in many other games. There are 12 albums with nine cards in each one. You get cards from card packs that drop either during gameplay or with any purchase worth more than $5 (so it encourages the player to spend more). The rarest packs make for a good incentive to spend money on expensive bundles and event paywalls. To generate additional activity spikes, Travel Town often launches events that have more card packs among the rewards or just some of the rare ones. With the right balance, and if you control picture drop rates right, these packs can be a great reward from the in-game economy standpoint. On the one hand, the player gets their satisfaction, but on the other, they don't actually receive any game-breaking currencies.

Growth opportunities

All current Travel Town features are focused on individual player goals. There are no social or competitive mechanics at all. On the one hand, they're not as common in merge games. On the other hand, if you look at the top 100 casual games, competitive mechanics are the most popular. They come in all shapes and forms - limited-time tournaments, various races, 1-on-1 competitions, etc. My prediction is that competitive mechanics will be the next big thing in merge games, too. Gossip Harbor, with its tournaments, has already made the first step in that direction.

In conclusion

Travel Town is a good example of a game that combines short-, mid-, and long-term effect features and events:

• Minimal daily activity and time pressure for its short-term goals.
• Boosting core gameplay and adding another layer of mechanics for the mid-term ones.
• Global quests and gacha mechanics that reinforce long-term engagement.

I do enjoy this game but I do have some comments that could make the game better. I had this order where I needed the sewing kit to get the cloth to make the clothes. I had a little over 100 energy and did get a single sewing kit. I do understand that is not the main item and the side ones are supposed to be a little harder to get. I wish they could do it so that you don’t have to waste so much energy to not even get a single one. I do find myself trying to complete an order the whole day and not even finishing with the odds that the items come out. I wish they could have a higher chance to get those. Another thing is the energies. I wish they were not so expensive compared to other games. The amount of energy you get in a day doesn’t match the orders. I can’t even complete daily quests because I’m stuck on one order. That brings me to my next point. The amount of daily quests is ridiculous. I have at least one day where the daily quests are 22 and the max is 63,000 coins that need to be earned. I can’t even get 20,000 coins in a day most times. I feel there needs to be more reasonable with the amount of coins that need to be earned to complete a quest. Now I do enjoy this game it is fun and I like the different items you unlock at each level and the idea of building a town.

Overall enjoyable

Fun match game, similar to other games out there. What makes this one unique is the town development aspect and the various producers that you get as you move through the game. Some are regular tap for an item, some spit the items out at a certain interval, and some need to be tapped multiple times to produce the item. Those last ones are the most frustrating, but I like the additional challenge of having to ration your energy and plan your moves to optimize order completion. I do have a few *minor* critiques. After a certain point, you stop using some producers all together. The game has a kind of cold storage for the obsolete producers to get them out of the way. However, I do wish the game would circle back to them sometimes. Just to mix it up. Also, the frequency of energy and gem drops is rather low compared to other similar games; it would be nice to have more of a chance to get energy and gems. In the same vein, the cost of energy feels high and I dislike that the item shop only offers gems prices. Overall, this is a nice game that keeps me returning daily. It’s relaxingly simple while providing a slight challenge in terms of resource management. The special events are always a fun bonus, too.

Still getting stuck with big update…

First off, I do really enjoy this game, and I don’t mind the new update too much. Even though we had to start over, you gave us all our diamonds back, and it was kind of nice to start with a fresh board again. HOWEVER, you said it was to give smoother progresss for everyone and less instances of getting stuck and that’s NOT what’s happening for me. I’m at level 16 and progress has pretty much halted completely. Tasks that offer supplies as rewards are not often enough to continue upgrading the buildings so I have 3 buildings just sitting there waiting for me to get more cement mixers, brick walls, and boxes of nails. So progress has almost completely stopped for me and I am unable to play the game as intended. I get what you were trying to do but you need another update to accomplish it. Right now I am just disappointed and frustrated. (Side note, the amount you get for selling high level items is ridiculous. For example, the large bacota sandwich is level 13, but when you sell it you only get 12 back, which is borderline insulting! You get 1 for the mix of olives that is level 2 in the same category so we should be getting A LOT more back for the sandwich considering it takes 2,048 olives to create it…just something to think about as this is always something about your game that has always rubbed me the wrong way.)

Travel Town Beginner’s Guide: Tips, Tricks & Strategies to Complete More Levels and Rebuild the Entire City

Travel Town is a match and merge puzzle game developed by Magmatic Games, and it’s currently available on iOS and Android platforms. On top of the beautiful sharp graphics and matching sounds, Travel Town comes with an addictive gameplay, that fans of the genre will certainly enjoy.

To get you started on the right foot, we have put together a comprehensive Travel Town beginner’s guide . We will start this guide with explaining the basic mechanics and continue with effective strategies to advance quickly in the game, rebuild the city and help your neighbours. Of course, without forgetting to enjoy the thrill of finding new and better objects as you go merging.

Travel Town is visually similar and has the same mechanics as Merge Mansion , a game that we have covered before here at Level Winner. So if you had the pleasure of playing that game, then you probably won’t have any major problems going through Travel Town.

The game takes place in Travel Town, a beautiful seaside that was ravaged away by a storm. Your main objective is to restore it and help your neighbours who were left with nothing. Meanwhile, you discover new objects. The mechanics of the game consists of mixing matching objects to get better and better objects. You can sell these objects to your neighbours who in exchange will give you smileys among other rewards. Smileys are the in-game currencies in Travel Town, and you will use them to rebuild the town. To start to play you need to use energy. At the beginning you have 100 units of energy in the form of lightning and you must use it wisely to advance levels. But be careful, in between you must pay attention to how you organize yourself. Here I will share with you several tips and strategies to be able to advance quickly in Travel Town.

1. Starting From Scratch And Cleaning Your Place

At first, you will start with little free space to merge. Not only that, but you will also find spaces blocked by objects covered in sand. Do not worry that this is momentary and here you will see how to proceed to optimize your space.

These grey objects that you find buried in the sand have to be removed with a matching item. To do this you must take objects out of the bucket and mix until you get the one you are looking for.

Now you may ask: How do I know what I need to mix to get what I’m looking for? Well, at first you will not have major difficulties. Keep looking, you’re on the right track. Once you achieve to unlock the space you will have a little bit more room and be more comfortable.

Pay attention not to miss the opportunity to unlock a space if you have the same item. As you advance in level, more spaces will be freed up to work and you will be able to have a greater variety of objects. You will also be able to see stars with numbers drawn on the sand, these numbers indicate at what level that space is unlocked. But you may have to dig up some grey object from that new place. When the neighbours see what you achieve on the beach, they will add you to the chat group.

There you can keep up-to-date with everything they would like to improve about the city, as well as read pretty funny things apart from the fact that they don’t stop talking in that group.

2. Stay Organized And Save Space

Maintaining order in Travel Town can be crucial and makes the difference between an average player and a pro player. Maintaining order in the first levels is not something very difficult to achieve, since you will only have a couple of objects on the playground. But what happens as you go forward? As you advance in the game you will have a greater variety of objects at your disposal.

Not only that, but you will also have to achieve more complex objects and you will have the board with half-jobs distributed everywhere. So how can you improve this situation?

A good option is to organize them by type , this way you will have more ease when searching for a particular object. For example, you can group the objects that come out of the bucket in one corner, the objects that come out of the picnic basket in another corner, and so on. You can also save space by gathering all the same items , so you will have more free places.

Another option is to keep rare items, that you are not going to use for the time being, in the inventory. What happens if you follow the previous steps and still fill the sandbox with things? Can’t you keep mixing? Okay, do not worry! In this case, you have two options, one is to sell the objects in exchange for smileys, touching the object you want to sell and then below the currency symbol you can make the sale in exchange for smileys.

Some lower-tier items you will not be able to sell but if you need the space urgently you can remove them. You select the object first and then down in the garbage can. Throwing out the items does not benefit you since the sale value is not as good as the value for which the neighbours pay, but it’s still something. That’s why you have to try not to get to this point.

The inventory will also be enabled, where you can initially store up to 7 objects. You can unlock more slots in exchange for diamonds.

3. Keep Your Neighbours Happy And Successfully Deliver Orders

The neighbours seem to love the items you manage to get from the sand. That’s why they will be constantly requesting new items. Before starting to create an order object, you should review all the orders you have.

This way, you avoid making a very complicated request when you have an object that’s almost ready on your board. Sometimes the commands are very simple, but other times they are a bit more difficult. There may be unique objects , which you will have to find out where or how to get them. It may also be that you order 2 or 3 objects together.

And you have to get them all, they don’t take half orders. This may seem difficult, but as the game progresses you will become a master at delivering double or triple commands. I recommend that you try to start with the most difficult of the 2 items. When you get this object it will turn green, this way it is very easy to identify them and you will know that you have to deliver it.

An ideal scenario is that you group the objects in green in some sectors of the board where you do not move the items much. This is so that you don’t keep mixing it with the same item and you lose the needed level. So you will leave it waiting until you get the others.

Why shouldn’t you overdo the level? If you build higher-level objects, you will spend more energy and later you will not be able to sell them and they will take up space. Also, you will have to start from scratch to build it again and deliver it, since you cannot go back. For example: if a neighbour asks you for a Nautilus shell but you continue mixing until you reach a starfish, then you will not be able to go back and you will have to wait for someone to ask you for that object.

Another thing that can happen is that you see some requests in grey: when you see this, if you try to open it, it will tell you that you have to go up to the next level to be able to take that order. So first you must level up completing other orders and then you will see what the order is about.

4. Start Little By Little To Buy Buildings And Reform Them

As we mentioned before, smileys are the in-game currencies. You can spend smileys on keys, so you can rebuild the buildings of Travel Town. You have several options to get smileys:

Fulfilling the requests of the neighbours: You will constantly have orders to deliver. Although, some objects will not give you many smileys in return. Some neighbours are willing to pay fortunes for rare objects. But yes, you have to know how to find them.

Mixing certain objects: There are some objects such as photos or jewels that, when merged, may reward you smileys. You’ll notice because they will fly on the board, so don’t forget to collect them!

Buying smileys in the store: Some days there are available smileys in the store for purchase. It’s a lazy option and you must pay with diamonds in exchange if you do not want to merge.

Selling objects: Another good option is to sell some items that you have left and that you think you will not need. Once you sell an item, you will see how many smileys you got for that item in return.

Hmm… did you regret selling it? After the sale, you can recover the item by going down where it says undo selling and select the circular arrow. But be careful, once you select something else on the screen, the option to have the object returned to you will disappear.

Opening chests: The majority of the chests have smileys as a reward, and you will be able to get many out of them. But of course, getting chests is not easy. You will have to fulfil orders, level up or rebuild buildings to get them. Once you get the necessary resources you can start upgrading the city. Keep in mind that in this case, you are going to need a pile of wood planks as well as smileys. Later in this guide, we will explain how to get the materials.

5. Squeeze The Juice Out Of Your Resources

The items that allow you to advance in the game faster are the following 3. Don’t forget to take care of your resources because they are the key to success in Travel Town.

Smileys: You need to get the maximum number of smileys to be able to pay for the key to the land that you are acquiring and also for the restorations. Doing this will give you experience points and you will advance in level.

That’s why every time a face item appears on the board, it is recommended not to sell it immediately and keep them in the inventory to mix them and reach the maximum level. This way, you can obtain greater benefits than selling them one by one.

For example: If you only have one smiley and you sell it, they will give you 1 in exchange, but if you have 2, they will give you 3, if you have 4 they will give you 7, if you mix 8 they will give you 15, and if you reach the maximum level of the item (level 5) which is 16 will give you 32 smileys. This is a lot of difference to make if you are patient and wait until you have the maximum level before selling it.

Energies: the energies will allow you to continue loading objects on the board, they renew themselves from time to time, but, indeed, they are also spent quickly when you need to deliver an object. That’s why every time an energy item appears, like the smileys, it is recommended to keep them in the inventory to mix them and reach the maximum level. This way you can get more benefit from it, for an energy item at the maximum level, you will get 100 units of energy.

A tip to get more energy is to take a good look at the sign that appears when you run out, since sometimes to the right of the option to pay with diamonds it gives you the option to see a commercial in exchange for 25 energy.

And because they are short commercials, I think it’s worth watching the commercial instead of spending diamonds on energy.

Diamonds: Diamonds are definitely the most precious and that’s why you have to avoid wasting them. In Travel Town, you can use it for almost everything. For example, you can skip the waiting time of some items with diamonds, but is it worth it? Perhaps, you can be patient with the wait and use the diamonds to exchange them for space in the inventory or get energy at good prices.

Check the offers daily, there are days that for a few diamonds you can get energy packages or chests. And just like energies and smileys, diamonds can be pooled together to make the most profit from selling them. Don’t forget that every time you discover a new item, it will appear in the collection book as a gift.

You must open it and inside it, you will find a diamond. So every day at the end of playing you can go to the book to continue completing the collections.

6. Permanent Objects

Permanent objects are those from which you can obtain objects in exchange for energy. These objects cannot be sold and you can take them to their maximum level. The higher its level, the better objects you will obtain from it. Keep in mind that of the objects that you can get from inside in exchange for energy, you will not be able to select them since it will give you a random object. Permanent items have a cooldown time that depends on the item.

As much as you have energy, you will not be able to remove objects infinitely. When the inside is finished, a clock will appear indicating how long you must wait until you can get objects again. There are times when you will be lucky and it will give you some higher-level item. Here are some permanent items that you will find in the first levels: Beach Bucket: This is the first permanent item that you get in the game. It is formed from buckets and you can take it to the maximum level, which is 9. From here you can obtain pebbles, stones, sandcastles and seashells, among others. When it is at its maximum level you will be able to obtain the mysterious letter from here but to be honest it will not be easy to obtain one.

With the objects that come out of the bucket, you can complete the Shells and the Sand Castles book collection. Picnic Basket: This basket, like the bucket, is one of the first permanent items that you obtain and that requires energy to deliver objects.

From here you can obtain spoons, olives among others. And you will be able to complete the Picnic Food series and the Cutlery Tools series. Jewellery display: When you take the jewellery display to level 4 you will have a jewellery box. It is a permanent item which means that it will remain on the board forever, not only will you be able to create beautiful jewels with what is inside it but it also has a particularity.

It is that this jewellery box does not use energy to generate objects! Which means that you will have endless items? Well, yes and no, because if it has a cooldown time. You can place the jewellery box in the middle of the board and you can see how the objects jump out.

In case you have a full workspace, I recommend that you keep the jewellery box surrounded by items. This way, neither of the will pop from inside, occupying the place you need on the board.

Once they stop coming out, you will have to wait for the recharge time to expire. If you need to make a jewel and you don’t want to wait for the recharge time, you can also use diamonds to skip the time. A trick for when they give you a reward jewellery box and you have one on the board: first you empty the one you have on the board until the clock mark appears indicating that you have to wait.

Next step, you lower the new jewel box to the board and empty it too. Once the 2 are with the cooldown clock, you merge them. This will not only give you a higher tier jewel box but also resets the time so you can empty it for the third time. 

7. Reward Items

Crates: Crates have 5 levels. Inside the crates, you can get smileys or  diamonds. When you get one, either for a level-up reward or for having completed a level. You can open it or you can also save it and wait till get one of the same level to be able to merge them.

Whichever option you choose, when you want to open it you have to select them and choose the option to open there will tell you how long you have to wait. The higher the level of the crate, the greater the rewards, but also the longer it will take to open.

Energy crate: The crates contain only energy inside so nothing that comes out of it can surprise you. They are usually achieved by levelling up or completing an order. These crates cannot be levelled up as they are at their maximum level when they appear. Toolbox: Toolboxes are boxes full of tools where you can find everything from screws and wood to cement and bricks for construction. They are crucial for building upgrades. Not only that, but they are quite difficult to get, usually given to you as a reward for hard-to-complete orders.

So I recommend that you keep everything that comes out of the toolbox well until you can get the maximum level of each item. So when you manage to build, for example, a brick wall or a concrete mixer, it will be kept in the inventory until you use it in some upgrade.

These tool items will be saved in the second tab of the inventory. So you should not worry about them taking up space. You can go check what materials you have stored at any time.

8. Special Items Are Difficult To Get

Joker: The jokers are rarer items than diamonds. And they have the peculiarity of being able to duplicate any common object you have in the playground. If you’re lucky enough to get one, I don’t recommend using it to combine with a pebble.

Save it or use it to combine with an object that has a very high tier level. This way you will save a lot of time. You also have the option to buy it in the store in exchange for diamonds. So it would be a good purchase. Bubbled items: Bubbled items are items that appear inside a bubble when you are creating an object. These objects are trapped and you will not be able to use them unless you pay their reward in diamonds. Its price varies depending on the difficulty of the item. It may be that you are not interested in taking out of the bubble in exchange for some diamonds. But as soon as an item that you need appears, this may be worth spending diamonds on.

Be aware, you cannot doubt it for a long time since the bubble will disappear in a short time. Don’t worry if you decide not to pay with diamonds, the bubbles always leave you something in return, which can be a smiley, energy or even a diamond.

Mysterious letter: Just as its name says, this letter is mysterious, it is rumoured that it has a map inside and that it takes you to some hidden place in Travel Adventure, have you got it yet? Do not worry that as the levels progress they will come to your hands. As a suggestion, you should start by getting letters out of the bucket. Mysterious fossil: If there was something more mysterious than the mysterious letter, it is surely this fossil. It is much more difficult to get, but believe me, it has a very good reward.

9. Take Part In Special Events

Do not forget to complete the special events, they are a good opportunity to gather resources. Daily challenge: It is a daily event that will appear as an order on the top right and when you open it you will be able to see the tasks to complete. This order, unlike the others, has a time limit that you cannot exceed. You can see the time remaining from the order or when opening it as well.

You can also see the counter, for example, if it says 0/3, it means that you have 0 tasks performed out of 3. As you complete them, it will indicate 1/3, 2/3, and so on until it reaches 3/3. Completing it will give you the reward indicated in the order. Wildlife sanctuary: it is a special event to which you are going to be invited to travel to the jungle. Precisely to a sanctuary, where you can feed and rescue tigers, cut dry or fallen trees, and plant new and healthy ones.

During our stay in the sanctuary, you have to try to complete as many requests as possible. Here there are no smileys as a reward for orders. But in exchange for completing an order, they will give you a paw token.

As you collect the paws you will advance in level, each time you reach a new level you will need more tokens to complete it. Once the time of the stay finishes, they will give you a diploma with the maximum level you reached and with it the rewards. The levels that you can reach range from level 1 to 8.

In the sanctuary, you will have a different energy, which has the same functionality as in the rest of the game but it is blue. When you run out of energy, you can go out and wait for it to recharge or you can also buy it with diamonds.

You can also collect smileys that will appear from time to time when you mix some items, it may be that smileys appear and you can collect those, a tip to take advantage of here is that if you see that our time in the jungle is running out and they are going to be left items, the ideal is that you can sell them before leave. Because once the time is up you won’t be able to come back for anything from the place.

The mechanic is very similar to what you’ve been doing. Only that here your mission, apart from completing the orders, is to rescue the tigers that are in the jungle. To do this, the first thing you must do is get items from the worker’s hut in exchange for energy. From here you can get tools, seeds and feeding bottles.

How to rescue your first tiger? The tigers are lost in the middle of the jungle but to get to them you must first cut down the fallen trees. You do this by taking some items of tools to the maximum level until you get a chainsaw. With it, you can choose the place to weed. Note that there are two types of trees to cut, one is the dry one that you will have to cut 2 times, so you will need 2 chainsaws.

And the other one is the stump for which you’re going to have to cut only once. Both will give you lodges in return. Once you enter the jungle you will find items in grey covered by the undergrowth, to unlock it you must get a matching item. When you go into the jungle, you may find a baby tiger in grey and to rescue it you will need to have another one. To get one you have to take a feeding bottle to the maximum level, then you double-tap it and a baby tiger will appear.

Once you got the baby tiger now with it, you can rescue the one you found in the jungle.

How do you plant new and healthy trees? Once you were able to remove the dry trees, the idea of ​​the sanctuary is that you reforest it with healthy trees. To do this you must start by mixing the seeds until you bring them to their maximum level. When you manage to have a Sundari tree, it will provide you with seeds and flowers without having to spend energy in return.

10. Be Persistent And Be Patient

As you progress in the game, you can achieve more complex items. Or maybe you use up energy faster. But don’t get discouraged, you can close the game and come back when you have full energy. Some items will take a few days to form but in the meantime, you will always have some other easier items to deliver. And when you have a permanent item in cooldown, relax and do other things in Travel Town.

My favorite simple trick is this: try to keep 3 jewelry boxes on the playing board. Never combine them, and they will generate free jewelry three times as fast. Same with ice cream generators. Have fun Y'all.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora is hoping a new dress code can help his younger players appreciate what it is to act and dress like a Major Leaguer.

During the club’s stop in St. Louis in mid-May, Cora noted that his club was becoming a little lax in their attire away from Fenway Park. He got together with some of the veterans and decided to implement a dress code in which players were to wear a sport coat to and from the park on getaway day games.

Sunday in Cincinnati was such a day, with the club playing the Reds in the afternoon before catching a flight back to Boston to take on the Blue Jays starting Monday at Fenway.

Why the change mid-season?

"Just teaching kids to become big leaguers,” Cora said. “We talked about it. I think it was [the] St. Louis [trip]. I think that was the first [trip where it was discussed]. Just conversations with veterans. And we came to the conclusion that on certain days, we're gonna wear sport coats. I think it is more about teaching the young guys to become big leaguers, and it's been good. They're doing a good job.”

The rules are still somewhat flexible, as there is not the strict adherence on flights when the getaway game is a night contest.

"Day games on getaway days,” Cora explained. “If it's a night game on a getaway day, then it's comfortable [attire]. If it's a day game, sport coats. And next week we got Miami, so that's gonna be summer beach attire, shorts on the road. Then red, white and blue for [July] Fourth, going to New York.”

In 1998, Cora came up with the Dodgers, one of the most stringent organizations when it came to dress codes and looking like a big leaguer on the road.

"Dodger way, man. Dodger way, yeah. Collared shirts,” Cora recalled. “In Vero Beach, the Texas League, sport coats when traveling, slacks on the road. They were very tough.”

That approach continued in his coaching days, like in 2017 with the eventual World Series champion Houston Astros. When the club was in Spring Training, they were invited to the home of chairman Jim Crane.

"I think you have this debate now, because in '17, we had dinner at Mr. Crane's house in Viera [Fla.], and with [manager A.J. Hinch], the dress code was a collar shirt,” Cora recalled. “And there was one player that showed up in a T-shirt. And the next day I talked to the player. He goes, 'Alex, that T-shirt was worth $500.' So I'm like, 'Yeah, yeah.' But I think it's a lot different. Obviously fashion is expressed in a different way. But I think just looking around and looking at some trends, I think sport coats are back, and a lot of teams are kind of going back to that."

More than anything, a dress code is a way for Cora -- or any manager -- to remind his players of the importance of discipline and acting like a big leaguer.

"Honestly, we were getting sloppy,” Cora said of the early-season dressing of his players. “A lot of sweat pants on the road. So we have to tighten it up. And they like it, they do like it. You see them now, veterans buying suits for guys, going back to that."

Cora is obviously hoping that if his young players learn how to eliminate the sloppiness in their style, the same will follow on the field. It’s all a mindset.

For Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: More than a fresh coat of paint

Remaking an old video game is always a dicey proposition — even more so if the game you’re remaking is held up as the pinnacle of the genre. That was not enough to dissuade Square Enix from giving the three original Dragon Quest games a high-definition reboot for modern consoles, starting with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake this fall.

Square Enix officially announced the HD remakes during the latest Nintendo Direct , but a week earlier, I actually had the chance to play Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake .

Having spent countless hours playing Dragon Warrior 1 , 2 , and 3 on my Game Boy Color in the early 2000s, I am within the target demographic for this remake. Going back to those old games now is tough for me, but what if there was a fresh version with updated visuals, gameplay, story, and UI, along with countless modern conveniences?

That’s exactly what this HD-2D remake offers, and for the most part, it does the job.

First off, I’m head over heels in love with the look of the game. You’ve likely seen the HD-2D art style in other recent Square Enix titles, such as Octopath Traveler , Live A Live , and Star Ocean: The Second Story R . It’s just as attractive here, infusing more life into the flat, 2D landscapes I remember seeing on a 2.3-inch screen 23 years ago.

With that said, there are some major changes in store for the gameplay.

We were set loose a bit past the start of the game in the castle town of Aliahan, with a full party of three companions already by the hero’s side. We were free to wander around as we pleased, but my goal was to progress as far as the demo would allow.

Not having to issue commands to all four characters every turn is a welcome change from the original, but the battles do feel much more hands-off as a result. Tap the A button once, and you can effectively sit the controller down for 30 seconds until the next input. It was on by default, so I assumed it was the way the developers wanted me to play, but I did notice that the further I got and the more spells I unlocked, the less thoughtful my party members were about MP usage or item consumption. I’m sure I could have adjusted the aggressiveness with the aforementioned tactics, but I think auto-battling is best for wiping out groups of low-level grunts.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will be available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on November 14, 2024.

Leeds to head to Germany for pre-season camp but all games behind closed doors

Leeds United have announced they will head to Germany for their pre-season training camp ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Any friendly matches during the camp will take place behind closed doors, with fans urged not to travel to Germany once dates and matches are announced.

The limitation on fans, despite Leeds’ best efforts to overturn the decision imposed by German authorities, means that supporters will only be able to attend two pre-season matches. Leeds have already announced friendly matches against Harrogate Town at the Exercise Stadium on July 19 and Valencia at Elland Road on August 3.

The Championship season begins the following weekend on August 10. Fixtures are set to be announced on Wednesday.

Leeds are in discussions about the possibility of streaming matches during their pre-season camp in Germany.

“Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond control of the club, we have recently been informed that any friendly matches played in Germany have been ordered to take place behind closed doors,” a Leeds statement read.

“We understand that supporters will be frustrated at this news, as we are equally as a club. We have explored all possible avenues, however, it has not been possible to overturn this decision.

“As always, we would like to thank you for your commitment and dedication, but in light of the above, we kindly ask supporters expecting to see Leeds United in pre-season training or matches, not to travel to Germany.”

Donald Trump has been presented with a plan to end the war in Ukraine if he is elected to the White House in November.

The Reuters news agency reports that two key advisers for the presumptive Republican nominee have put forward the plan, which involves telling Kyiv it will only get more US military aid if it enters peace talks.

At the same time, the US would warn Moscow that refusal to negotiate would result in increased support from Washington for Ukraine, according to retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg.

Lt Kellogg and Fred Fleitzl, who were both chiefs of staff in Trump's National Security Council while he was president and who came up with the plan, said a ceasefire would be based on prevailing battle lines during peace talks.

Mr Fleitzl said Trump showed a positive attitude towards the plan.

"I'm not claiming he agreed with it or agreed with every word of it, but we were pleased to get the feedback we did," he said.

The Kremlin has said any peace plan from a future Trump administration would need to reflect the battlefield "reality" - but that Vladimir Putin was open to talks.

"The value of any plan lies in the nuances and in taking into account the real state of affairs on the ground," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

From the Ukrainian side, presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said freezing the war at prevailing front lines would be "strange".

"Ukraine has an absolutely clear understanding and it is spelled out in the peace formula proposed by President Zelenskyy, it is clearly stated there - peace can only be fair and peace can only be based on international law," he said.

Ukrainian shelling destroyed a radiation control post in Velyka Znamyanka in the Zaporizhzhia region, Russia's management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine reports.

"Specialists carried out a number of compensatory measures to control the radiation situation in the area," the management said.

Radiation levels, the management added, do not exceed safe levels.

For context :  Russian troops seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the early days of Moscow's invasion on Ukraine in 2022.

Moscow and Kyiv have since routinely accused each other of endangering safety around it.

Evan Gershkovich has been seen before the start of his behind-closed-doors trial in Russia.

Reporters were allowed to briefly film the US journalist today before the start of his trial in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage that he denies.

Mr Gershkovich was seen standing in a glass box, with a shaved head.

The Wall Street Journal reporter was first arrested on espionage charges in March 2023 after Russia claimed he had been "gathering secret information" on orders from the CIA.

Mr Gershkovich faces 20 years in prison if convicted and he has spent over a year in Moscow's Lefortovo prison.

A Russian missile attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa has struck civilian infrastructure this morning, regional governor Oleh Kiper reports.

The attack damaged an administrative building in the industrial sector. 

Mr Kiper said there were no casualties in the attack.

Earlier this week, a Russian missile strike damaged a storage facility in the city, injuring three people.

Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian forces in the invasion, with many attacks aimed at the city's port facilities.

Russia denies targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure.

A suspected hypersonic missile launched by North Korea exploded in flight today, South Korea's military has said.

The missile was launched from near the capital, Pyongyang, South Korea's joint chiefs of staff said. 

Japan's defence ministry said the missile flew to an altitude of about 62 miles and range of more than 200km.

Senior officials of South Korea, the US and Japan have held a phone call and condemned the launch as a violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and a serious threat to the peace and stability of the region and beyond.

US Indo-Pacific command also issued a condemnation and called on Pyongyang to refrain from further unlawful and destabilising acts.

"While we have assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel, or territory, or to our allies, we continue to monitor the situation," it said in a statement.

North Korea's last missile launch was on 30 May.

Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin held a summit and signed a mutual defence pact. 

Seoul, Washington and Tokyo criticised the two countries' deepening military cooperation, with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol calling the pact "anachronistic".

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a direct message to the two Russian top generals who are the subject of fresh arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court.

The court has accused Sergei Shoigu and General Valery Gerasimov of war crimes and the crime against humanity of inhumane acts.

In his nightly video address, Mr Zelenskyy said: "Shoigu, Gerasimov – your path to The Hague is open."

The Ukrainian president also said the official start of Ukraine's ascension into the EU today was a "historic result", adding: "We will definitely implement everything necessary to advance through each chapter of our relations with the EU and to create a treaty – a treaty of Ukraine's accession."

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian defence minister Andrei Belousov spoke over the phone today, in what marked the first call between Mr Austin and his Russian counterpart since March 2023.

The two men discussed the importance of open lines of communication, the Pentagon said.

Spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said Mr Austin had initiated the conversation. 

Mr Belousov was appointed to the role of defence minister last month after the shock dismissal of longtime minister Sergei Shoigu by Vladimir Putin.

Some of the returned Ukrainian soldiers were prisoners taken from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the head of the Ukrainian president's office has said.

Andriy Yermak said of the 90 fighters returned by Russia today, 52 were from a large group of Ukrainians captured while trying to defend the Azovstal steelworks in southern Ukraine while others had been held as prisoners after the capture of Chernobyl.

Both sites were seized by Russia early in the war.

Mr Yermak described the latest prisoner swap as an "important exchange".

"Thanks to our team for their work. Grateful to the UAE for facilitating the exchange. We will return everyone," he said.

Russia and Ukraine have each returned 90 prisoners of war in the latest swap between the two countries, the Russian defence ministry has said.

In a statement on Telegram, the ministry said Russian prisoners were returned with the United Arab Emirates acting as an intermediary.

The prisoners were being flown to Moscow for medical checks, it added.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in a post to social media that 90 Ukrainian soldiers were returned by Russia.

"We remember all our people in Russian captivity. We continue our work for the release of everyone. We seek the truth about everyone who may be held by the enemy," he said, as he thanked the Ukrainian exchange team.

1-3 p.m. –  Riverbank Park in Westbrook will host a community event with art, poetry, music and guest speakers. There will also be a barbecue picnic, a student fashion show, hair braiding, pick-up soccer and more activities sponsored by the city. 667 Main St., Westbrook.  On Facebook.

7-8 p.m. –  The Portland Yoga Project is putting on a class called “Liberated Breath: A Juneteenth Yoga Experience” that seeks to reflect on the holiday through yoga.
