Traveling around Texas? Here’s what the weather is like where you’re heading

travel advisory texas weather

And advice from plumbers on how to prepare your house or apartment for low temperatures while you’re away.

If you’re one of the nearly 9 million Texans expected to travel this holiday season, chances are good you’re heading to visit family or friends in another part of the state. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled local weather forecasts, travel tips and advice from some plumbers in Houston on how to protect your pipes while you’re away.

The takeaway? It’ll be cold pretty much everywhere you go, but the chances of precipitation – snow and ice – are very low to nonexistent, and experts suspect the power grid will hold up as a result.

What’s the weather like where you’re heading?

If Central or South Texas is your destination, pack lots of warm clothes. Subfreezing temperatures are expected to hit Thursday night and last through the weekend, and it’ll be windy . But unlike the deadly winter storm of 2021, this arctic front won’t bring any moisture with it, so road conditions should be decent (although we can’t promise I-35 won’t be congested).

Heading north? The D-FW area will also see subfreezing temperatures and no precipitation through the weekend. It won’t get warmer than the 40s through Sunday.

The arctic front will hit Southeast Texas by Thursday afternoon, and temperatures will hover between the 20s and 40s through the weekend.

Out west, temperatures will drop hard and fast Thursday, and the wind chill will push temps into the negative Friday in Midland.

How should you prep your house (and plants) before you leave?

Plumbers advise turning off the water main to your home and opening the faucets inside to empty pipes . It’s not foolproof and may be a bit extreme, but science is still on your side.

"When you drain your system, you never get all of the water out, so there is a chance something crazy could happen,” John Eccles with Nick's Plumbing in Houston told Houston Public Media. “But water expands when it freezes, so that's what happens when we don't drain it."

If your plumbing is on an exterior wall, “open up the cabinets and it takes the ambient air of the home and helps it to stay under the cabinet to keep the pipes warm," David Robbins, a plumber in Houston, told HPM. "That's a really good idea. I highly recommend doing it."

While your interior pipes should weather the storm, Robbins said exterior pipes and openings need to be covered.

"Exposed piping like hose bibs, water connections, valves, irrigation systems, they need to be protected,” he said.

Here are some tips on protecting your pipes (and plants!), courtesy of KUT in Austin.

Will the heat and power stay on this time?

Unlike during the 2021 winter storm, the power grid is expected to continue functioning because “temperatures will be slightly warmer [than they were that year], no significant precipitation is forecast, and the extreme cold (for Texas) is not expected to last for days on end,” according to KUT.

Feeling adventurous?

Here are six ways to get around Texas that don’t include flying but do include a train .

Gov. Greg Abbott speaks at a 2021 press conference regarding the state’s emergency response to a winter storm. The state is bracing for subfreezing temperatures this week, but officials do not expect mass power outages.

Texas braces for tropical storm forecast to bring heavy rain, winds, tornado threat

travel advisory texas weather

An anticipated tropical storm is expected to bring heavy downpours, high winds and the possibility of tornadoes to southern Texas and the Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday.

A tropical cyclone is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm before arriving in northeastern Mexico by Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service . Tropical storm conditions with wind gusts up to 57 mph are expected along the Texas coast south of the San Luis Pass.

Heavy rainfall and the threat of flash floods will intensify in the western Gulf Coast, according to National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan.

"Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues," the weather service said. "Rivers and tributaries may rapidly overflow their banks in multiple places. Small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches may become dangerous rivers. Flood control systems and barriers may become stressed."

The cyclone is predicted to bring rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches from northeastern Mexico to south Texas, possibly peaking at 15 inches. The weather service's office in Brownsville, Texas reported a 40% chance of rapid onset flooding Wednesday with rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches possibly lasting hours.

The National Weather Service said that "the situation is somewhat favorable for tornadoes" and warned residents to seek safe shelter.

Forecasters said the eventual storm is expected to weaken upon landfall Wednesday night and diminish by Thursday evening. More downpours will continue across the Rio Grande Valley and south Texas on Thursday before conditions improve.

The vast majority of flight delays and cancellations are weather related. Conditions like precipitation, wind, and fog greatly affect how safe and enjoyable flying can be. If your current location or your intended destination is experiencing bad weather, be sure to check with your airline for any delays or cancellations before heading to the airport.

  • Check with your airline to be aware of any flight delays or cancellations
  • Flying earlier in the day can help avoid any cascading delays from earlier flights
  • Give yourself enough time between connecting flights in case of a weather delay on your first flight

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issues disaster declaration as Tropical Storm Alberto approaches Mexico

The first named storm of the hurricane season strengthened slightly late Wednesday as it moved toward Mexico’s Gulf Coast, threatening rainfall of up to 20 inches there, as well as flooding and heavy rain in Texas, officials said.

Tropical Storm Alberto formed over the western Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday morning, and its center is expected to reach Mexico's Gulf coast early Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm is large, with tropical-storm-force winds extending out 460 miles.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds strengthened to 50 mph from 40 mph,  the National Hurricane Center  said in a 10 p.m. local time update, Once it hits Mexico, it is expected weaken rapidly as it moves inland.

The center of Alberto was about 120 miles east-southeast of Tampico, Mexico, and around 290 miles south-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, at 1 a.m. Central Standard Time, the hurricane center said Thursday. It was traveling west at about 9 mph.

Mexico’s civil protection coordination agency said late Wednesday on social media that rain was beginning to fall in Tampico, and warned people to stay inside, stay safe, and not drive during the storm.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the northeastern coast of Mexico, as well as the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande up to San Luis Pass, which is near Houston. High winds and as much as 10 to 15 inches of rain are expected in Corpus Christi.

Gov. Greg Abbott  issued a disaster declaration  for 51 Texas counties "to ensure Texans and at-risk regions have the resources and personnel needed to respond to this storm,” he said in a statement.

The National Weather Service said moderate coastal flooding was observed across the Texas Gulf Coast as the storm approached Mexico.

Dustin Leeds and Kristine Martin, of Houston, were on vacation in Freeport, Texas, and woke up Wednesday to floodwaters that were thigh-high.

Martin woke up at around 5:30 a.m. after having heard heavy rain: “I opened the blinds and was like, ‘Huh, the ocean looks closer,’” she joked.

Residents seemed to be taking it in stride. Homes are raised in the area because of flood risk, and many people had moved their cars to safety in advance.

“Everybody’s still in their homes. There’s two other families in houses right around us that were just — they were hanging out, living their best life,” Leeds said.

A storm surge of 2 to 4 feet is possible from Sargent, Texas, to the Sabine Pass.

There could also be a few tornadoes in deep South Texas overnight Wednesday into Thursday, the weather service said.

On Thursday, the storm’s center is forecast to move west into Mexico then weaken, most likely dissipating by Thursday night, the National Hurricane Center said.

Some parts of Mexico, including Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, could get maximum totals of 20 inches of rain, the hurricane center said.

The Texas A&M Forest Service has mobilized four teams comprising 100 personnel and 24 vehicles, while the Texas National Guard has three platoons of more than 40 personnel in total, alongside 20 vehicles, including Chinook helicopters.

The weather service advised people in areas affected by the storm to have five to seven days' supplies of food, water and other necessities on hand.

More than 82 million people were under some form of heat advisory Wednesday. The heat wave is set to last through at least Friday.

Advisories issued for Potential Tropical Cyclone One, two more areas to watch in tropics

The system has a high chance of becoming a Tropical Storm by Wednesday. The first name of the 2024 Hurricane Season is Alberto. (WPEC)

Potential Tropical Cyclone One

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone One in the southwest Gulf of Mexico.

A potential tropical cyclone is a designation used by the National Hurricane Center to indicate a disturbance that is not yet a tropical storm but has the potential to bring that kind of weather to the U.S. within 48 hours.

The system has a high chance of becoming a Tropical Storm by Wednesday. The first name of the 2024 Hurricane Season is Alberto.

A Tropical Storm Warnings has been issued for the Texas coast from Port O'Connor to the mouth of the Rio Grande. A Tropical Storm Watch has also been issued for the northeast coast of Mexico. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area by Wednesday.

Potential Tropical Cyclone One is forecast to bring heavy rain and coastal flooding to much of the western Gulf Coast. A Flood Watch has been issued for southeast Texas through the end of the week.

Southwestern Gulf of Mexico

Another area of low pressure is forecast to develop over the Bay of Campeche this weekend. Gradual development is possible early next week as it moves slowly north-northwest. This area currently has a 20% chance of development over the next 7 days.

Southwestern Atlantic

The other area we are monitoring is located several hundred miles east of the Bahamas, where a trough of low pressure is producing showers and storms.

Conditions could become favorable for some gradual development as the area moves west-northwest through the week. The system is forecast to approach the southeastern United States by Friday.

Development chances are low, only 10% to 20% through the next two to seven days. If something does develop, it likely stays to our north and doesn't impact us.

We could see more moisture moving this way, however, so rain chances increase a bit later this week.

Downpours slowly ending

Intermittent showers end shortly after sunset.

Justin Horne , Weather Authority Meteorologist / Reporter

Adam Caskey , KSAT Weather Authority Meteorologist

FORECAST HIGHLIGHTS :

  • Rain Ends later this evening
  • Stray showers tomorrow afternoon (far fewer than today)
  • Temperatures back into the 90s

The tropical downpours will come to an end a few hours after sunset this evening, and leave us with a very humid night in the 70s.

A few showers could develop tomorrow afternoon, but the coverage will be very limited and most of us will stay dry. More than anything, expect morning clouds then afternoon sunshine with a high near 90°

The weekend looks sunny and warm with highs in the low to mid 90s, which is near average for this time of year. Daily afternoon pop-up showers are possible next week, but coverage and accumulations will be minimal. Temperatures remain in the 90s next week (no triple digits!).

SUMMER STARTS TODAY

The summer solstice occurs today at 3:51pm. That means we officially move into summer with the Northern Hemisphere tilted toward the sun. It is the longest day of the year, with more than 14 hours of daylight.
