How do you get around on the island?

The most popular ways are by bus, tram, or taxi—but you can also explore by way of hiring a car!

The best thing about this option is that you can really take your time and have a semblance of control over your schedule.

Here’s my top list so you can add it to your list of must-see places as you travel Tenerife by car!

That said, while we’re at it, here are things to see in Tenerife by car based on my experience so that you have an idea of what the trip’s going to be like.

1. Teide National Park and Mount Teide

best things to do in tenerife south, view of a non-barren desert landscape with bright yellow bushes in forefront and large mountain in background under a clear blue sky

No visit to the island is complete without dropping by to see Mount Teide —it’s one of the must visit places in Tenerife.

From its three million-year-old lava flows and the lunar feel to the terrain and landscape, Teide National Park is worth the trip.

There’s a reason it attracts up to 3.5 million visitors each year: with its multiple hiking trails, endemic flora and fauna, not to mention one of the best sky views in the world.

You don’t want to skip this one, and it’s worth adding to your list of things to do in North Tenerife —totally free!

The most popular route is TF-21 Teide Road from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Los Cristianos, or Puerto de la Cruz.

There will be signs to help you figure out the best way to reach Teide National Park , but you can only drive up to the base cable car station.

Parking is free all throughout the park, but take note that slots fill out very quickly during peak season so consider this.

Don’t forget that you’ll need a permit if you plan to climb up to the summit, but hiking on any of the trails around the park doesn’t need one.

Here are some Mount Teide Trips to consider to help you decide what kinds of activities you can do up north once you’re in the vicinity.

2. Anaga Rural Park

View of rolling hills and mountains leading towards the wide open sea with green grassy area in the foreground all under a bright blue sky with wispy clouds

Looking for a more intimate local experience in a mountain village surrounded by dense forests?

Ready to hike and discover hidden beaches and amazing views that open up to the Atlantic Ocean?

Want to know what is Tenerife famous for ? This is one of the points.

Another one of those things to see in Tenerife by car is Anaga Rural Park !

The great thing about the 35,500-acre park is that there’s no gate to enter to be able to visit.

This is one of the best places in Tenerife you don’t want to miss just because it has a bit of everything the island offers.

Of course, if you’re visiting by car, you want to take the scenic route so you can enjoy the drive!

One of the most popular starting points is Mirador Cruz del Carmen since that’s where the visitor center is.

It has a great lookout point of Vega Lagunera, specifically the UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Laguna .

If you’re coming from Santa Cruz, take TF-5; signs should point you to the park.

However, if you’re arriving from the south, take TF-1 to Santa Cruz and then follow TF-5 from there.

While parking is free, it can be limited, especially in areas close to trailheads.

Don’t forget to take a look at this list of things to do in Santa Cruz, Tenerife , if you want to add more activities to make your island visit worth every second!

3. Masca Valley

View of stone path running along ridge of mountain between palm trees and small buildings towards a prominent rocky peak covered in sporadic grass with a dramatic backdrop of a tall rocky mountainside

Here’s a favorite hidden mountain village of mine in all of the island: Masca Valley , considered one of the most beautiful ones to boot.

If you’re looking for non-touristic things to do in Tenerife, this quaint little village needs to be one of your must-see locations.

The drive alone is as incredible as walking through its cobbled streets, and it’s a bonus that it’s not as crowded as other places—though it can still draw some visitors during peak season.

In this case, parking can be minimal within the village.

Since it’s in the Teno mountains on the northwestern side of Tenerife, it’s a bit of a drive up to Masca Valley via TF-436 which runs from Buenavista del Norte to Santiago del Teide .

This drive was certainly memorable for me because of the road: it’s challenging with narrow areas, lots of curves, and hairpins, but you know what?

The view is so worth it leading up to my arrival at Masca Valley: we’re talking rolling hillsides, ravines… nature all around!

As much as the destination, the journey to the village is as breathtaking, and you must make sure you add this to your list of things to see in Tenerife by car.

Of course, once you’re in the village, don’t forget to visit the Ethnographic Museum—ask the locals because it’s hidden in one of the houses.

Wear comfortable shoes because there will be a lot of walking around as soon as you arrive. I enjoyed visiting Plaza de Masca and the Masca Church!

4. Santa Cruz de Tenerife

View of paved street with large palm trees lining the center and tall buildings to the sides under a blue sky with clouds

If the question is, what is there to see or explore in Tenerife? One of the top answers is this:

The vibrant capital city of the Canary Islands itself, of course, is Santa Cruz de Tenerife!

It’s accessible from all major roads: TF-1 from the south and TF-5 from the north, and there are so many places to see in the city alone if you’re traveling by car.

There are a lot of different parking areas, some covered, around the city—but take note that this can fill up quickly, especially when big festivals and events are happening on the island.

Aside from the places already on this list, make sure you visit my favorite local spots if you’re looking for tourist attractions in Tenerife.

If you’re into architecture, you’ll love the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martin which is reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House.

Want a more firsthand experience of the culture and mingle with locals?

Drop by the Market of Nuestra Señora De África, which is close to the auditorium, right by the Santa Cruz port.

You can try Canarian food and wine and buy souvenirs—it doesn’t get as authentic as this, and it’s given my trip more depth.

An instant addition to your list of things to see in Tenerife by car is passing by Puente Serrador or the Serrador Bridge with its graffiti art.

It’s also a great place to grab something to eat or, if you’re there at night, something to drink!

If you love taking photos like me, you’ll fall in love with Santa Cruz de Tenerife Old Town close to the Concepción Church.

It’s like stepping back in time because of the colonial feel of the place—I loved walking around just sightseeing and looking at more of the architecture.

Looking for something more specific, like accommodations that are close to the beaches? Here are hotels in Tenerife on the beach so you have easy access to water activities!

Also, check out my post for more things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and nearby places!

5. La Orotava

a view of a plaza with benches, two palm trees orange or yellow buildings

Driving in Tenerife allows you to get to more places in shorter periods of time and another one to add to your itinerary is the charming town of La Orotava .

You’ll have to take TF-5 from Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz and when you get there, one of the things you’ll notice first?

There are so many gardens!

What makes visiting La Orotava such a treat is that it’s another one of those well-preserved places on the island that make you feel like you’ve entered a time machine and walked back in time.

Walking on the 17th-century cobbled streets and enjoying the sights, the first thing you’ll want to visit is La Casa De Los Balcones.

It’s a three-storey mansion that showcases carved balconies which is distinct in Canarian architecture.

I also loved Jardines Victoria or the Victoria Gardens: not only is it free to enter and take a stroll, but there are also a lot of coffee shops around it if you’d like to sit down for a while and just enjoy the garden view.

Honestly, this is one of the best places to visit Tenerife if you want a genuine feel of the island’s way of life.

Personally, parking outside the town is favorable for me since it’s nice to walk around and explore on foot.

Since it’s close by, here are things to do in Puerto de la Cruz while you’re there before you visit La Orotava.

Add this list of the best hotels in Puerto de la Cruz if you’re looking for places to stay in during your trip.

6. Garachico

an aerial view of a town with white houses surrounded by trees and water at the back

If you’re into quaint little towns with lots of history, here’s another one, this time with a mix of natural attractions and historical, well-preserved architecture: Garachico !

What’s interesting about this fishing town is how it once was a main commercial port of Tenerife.

It may not seem like that anymore, but only because of the eruption of Arenas Negras Volcano , which buried a very big portion of the town in 1706.

This naturally made the port unusable, but the town was rebuilt on top of the resulting lava flows afterward.

Since then, it has retained much of its charm—being there is another trip back in time thanks to the colonial houses and, of course, the wooden balconies.

If you’re visiting Garachico , make sure to drive down Icod de los Vinos to see the infamous Drago Milenario, the oldest and biggest dragon tree on the island.

TF-42 is one of the most common routes to Garachico , though if you’re coming from TF-436, keep driving through Masca Valley, and you should get to this coastal town.

There are also two free parking areas outside the village so this shouldn’t be an issue.

On the way, look for a couple of beautiful viewpoints: Mirador La Cruz de Hilda and Mirador Altos de Baracán .

It truly is places like these that have me answering a resounding yes every time someone asks, is Tenerife worth visiting?

7. Los Gigantes Cliffs

Try out some of the finest adult only hotels tenerife has to offer, view of large rocky cliffs standing on the coast next to wide open blue ocean with the distant figure of someone riding a jet ski in the foreground

Want to see something simple but impressive? Los Gigantes speaks for itself, and you have to see it in person to know what I’m talking about.

This majestic rock formation is truly a sight to behold up close and should be on your top things to see in Tenerife by car: it’s massive and rises up to 800 meters from the ocean.

Since it’s located in Santiago del Teide, the town of the same name as these cliffs, they are on the same route as Masca Valley and Garachico , so you can plan out a visit to these places one after the other.

Parking can be a challenge during peak season, especially at the harbor during the daytime, so plan ahead and consider visiting later on the day when slots free up.

But aside from admiring the cliffs, what are other things to do in Los Gigantes ?

Regarding places to go in Tenerife, I prefer taking note of viewpoints that provide me with a fantastic vantage point to admire different parts of the island from various angles.

Of course, it’s still related to the cliffs, but this allows me to enjoy the rest of the town, too!

A favorite is Punta de Teno, right at the end of the cliffs, which is very little known—which means no crowds, and that’s a good thing for me!

It also has a view of the Punta del Teno lighthouse.

Want to go to the beach? Surround yourself with cliffs and visit the black sand cove of Los Guíos!

While we’re at it, here are the best beaches in Tenerife if you’re looking for more of them to visit and explore.

For something a little different, I enjoyed trying the natural pools at Puerto Santiago .

8. Pyramids of Güímar

Scenic view of the Pyramids of Guimar in Chacona on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

There are more things to see in Tenerife by car, and this one is worth adding to your growing list: the Pyramids of Güímar !

I always get a funny reaction from people who are unfamiliar with the island every time the pyramids are mentioned, and that’s understandable.

With origins that are still up for debate, these six rectangular pyramid-shaped lava stone structures remain an unsolved mystery.

Is it connected to some ancient culture with practices or traditions that require the pyramids as part of some ritual?

Is there a more recent agricultural origin related to it?

Perhaps it can also be related to astronomy and the solstice… no one knows, and that adds to the intrigue, so see them to come up with your theories!

The pyramids are accessible via the Ethnographic Park Piramides de Güímar which is easy to reach from Santa Cruz or Los Cristianos via TF-1 (exit to TF-28).

It has a museum, several exhibits with guided tours (including audio tours), and three routes to choose from. – Get tickets here

My personal favorite in the park was the Poison Garden!

It tends to get busy later on in the day so if you don’t want to have problems with parking, make sure to arrive early.

I recommend booking through their website and taking note of holidays.

9. Candelaria

blue sky with during the night with white clouds and a view of Candelaria Church on night lighted by yellow lights

One of the things that make Tenerife really unique is its many religious traditions, and the coastal town of Candelaria is a great place to visit for this.

A true highlight of my visit is the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelari a or the Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria , a Catholic pilgrimage site.

The basilica houses the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria , the patron saint of the Canary Islands, and features a mix of different styles to make it unique—a must-see!

Of course, it’s not Tenerife if there’s no beach, and there are several options to choose from, all accessible by car.

I personally liked La Arena since it’s not as busy as Candelaria Beach or Playa de Punta Larga, a beach that allows nudism.

To get to Candelaria, like most places, it’s accessible through the main highway TF-1 via Santa Cruz or Los Cristianos.

This is definitely an obligatory stop if you find yourself down south of the island!

10. Playa de Benijo

best beaches in tenerife, volcanic sand beach, golden sand beach, las teresitas beach, costa adeje beach, scenic beach, secluded beach in tenerife, canary islands, los gigantes

Last but not least, one of the things to see in Tenerife by car is to visit Benijo Beach!

Part of Anaga Rural Park , it’s an isolated place with no facilities, not even hotels or restaurants, which is what I love about it.

It’s where you can unwind and relax, not to mention just enjoy nature in peace and the sights.

If you can, I recommend watching the sunset to appreciate the rugged cliffs and the dramatic scenery.

To get to this beach, take TF-5 from Santa Cruz to San Cristobal de La Laguna until you reach Taganana and then Benijo Beach, which has free parking a few meters away.

One of my favorite viewpoints on the way is Mirador Risco Amogoje which provides a magnificent view of not just the ocean but also the surrounding mountains.

My final thoughts on Tenerife by car

a closeup of a persons hands driving a car during the day

Ready to drive around Tenerife in your rental car? There’s so much to see, and it’s more convenient with a vehicle of your own.

It certainly allowed me to do as many stopovers as I wanted to be able to enjoy the many breathtaking sceneries around the island.

Have you been on a road trip in Tenerife before? How did it go? Share it with us in the comments, and we might just discover something new!

FAQs about things to see in Tenerife by car

Do you need a car in tenerife.

While there are other options to travel around the island by bus or taxi, having your own car provides you with more opportunities to stop at viewpoints or other interesting places on a whim.

Is driving in Tenerife hard?

It can be a little challenging, depending on where you’re headed and the roads you’re taking.  An example is TF-436 which runs from Buenavista del Norte to Santiago del Teide .

Best driving in Tenerife tips?

It’s best to assess your skill level when driving since some roads can be challenging. Also, note when peak seasons are, as it may limit parking in some places.

FULL Tenerife Road Trip Guide | Itinerary, Places To Visit in Tenerife, Car Hire!

Categories Canary Islands , Europe , Itinerary , Spain

Tenerife is a small and compact island filled with so many different landscapes and terrains so a Tenerife road trip really is the perfect way to see the island and get an alternative look at the island away from the hotel resorts!

We spent a super quick 3 days in Tenerife recently and we saw so much of the island in that time and worked out the perfect Tenerife road trip itinerary. We saw towns that reminded me of being in South America, we saw incredible coastline and natural swimming pools. We saw remote mountain villages and climbed Spain’s highest mountain – Mount Teide, which is also a volcano… impressive hey!

For your Tenerife itinerary, you could do a 1 week road trip in Tenerife and easily spend your whole holiday travelling around the island because there are so many places to see in Tenerife, or you could spend a few days relaxing in one place and then a few days on a Tenerife road trip exploring the island.

Either way, this post of places to visit in Tenerife, things to see in Tenerife and my Tenerife road trip itinerary will help give you some ideas for your trip!

Car Hire in Tenerife

Tenerife has 2 airports. From the UK with TUI , we flew into Tenerife South Airport . We hired a car through Rentalcars which checks all the top car rental companies and although it makes sense, we were still so surprised to see most of the airport car parking as car hire !

Because Tenerife is an island, it’s not like you can bring your own car so you will need to hire a car in Tenerife for this road trip and although there are many residents and locals living in Tenerife, a lot of the cars you’ll see on the roads in these tourist places in Tenerife, will be hire cars.

We hired a car through Top Cars which was a company we hadn’t used before but we had no problems with them, Cicar (Canary Islands Car) was another company we saw a lot of cars from on the roads.

Check out prices and availability for car hire on Rentalcars here!

Driving in Tenerife

In Tenerife, like in the rest of Europe (except the UK), they drive on the right side of the road . Which is great for Europeans and North Americans! Not as much for Brits and Aussies!

Generally, we found the driving in Tenerife to be ok . There is definitely an island feel to driving here with locals doing as they please in certain situations, plus, with a lot of tourists on the road you do have to be cautious, but it is in no way a dangerous driving situation like in Morocco for example. Roads are all marked and there are rules of the road in place.

As for driving licenses for Tenerife. At the time of writing this, UK driving licenses are still valid in Tenerife as they are in the rest of Spain. Tenerife Guru’s page is a great place to look for updated license information though, more detailed information on driving in Tenerife and travel rules to Tenerife.

We used a mixture of Google Maps and Waze for getting around Tenerife and both worked really well despite the internet dropping here and there in the more remote places.

Roads in Tenerife

A Tenerife road trip is perfect because of the amazing roads in Tenerife with their spectacular scenery and later in this post I’ll tell you more about these roads and where to go in Tenerife to see such incredible roads.

For now, let’s focus on the practical side. We did find the roads in Tenerife really good to drive on . The main dual carriage way roads are all well kept and well sign posted . The smaller side roads are the same, and even the windy mountain roads, although narrow, are well kept from pot holes etc.

However, one major thing to note about the roads in Tenerife for tourists driving around the island is the amount of narrow and windy roads there are.

From our experience, many of the narrow windy roads were suitable for 2 cars to pass at once but both cars had to really slow down and go as far as they could to their sides.

We didn’t travel down many 1 way roads. Luckily, many of us from the UK we are used to small 1 way roads but I know most American drivers aren’t so these small 2 way roads might still be worrying to you and you do need to drive slowly around the bends and be cautious of what traffic is approaching.

From a passengers point of view, I actually got pretty car sick from all of the windy roads so if you do suffer from car sickness or motion sickness you might want to pack something for this for driving around Tenerife!

Tenerife Road Trip Map

A Tenerife road trip is a brilliant idea because of how small the distances are from place to place in Tenerife and that the majority of the island has a ring road around it .

On this note, just because the island is small and just because there are many main roads in Tenerife, many of the roads are windy country roads meaning they will take longer to drive than you might expect from just looking at a map.

Here is a Tenerife road trip map with the below places to visit in Tenerife I have mentioned and our 3 day Tenerife road trip Itinerary

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Mount Teide Peak by Drone

Tenerife Road Trip Itinerary

The perfect road trip itinerary for Tenerife will break the island up into areas and focus on one area per day ideally.

We focused on the West Coast, North and Middle of the island mainly and we found so many gems here that really surprised me and gave us a totally alternative look at Tenerife than the ‘Brits Aboard’ and ‘All-Inclusive Hotel’ image Tenerife has been given to many.

Tenerife Itinerary

Our Tenerife itinerary looked like this:

What I liked and didn’t about our Tenerife Road Trip Itinerary

Looking back at our trip to help you with your Tenerife travel, I wish we hadn’t gone to Santa Cruz de Tenerife . This is really just a big city and although there are some noteworthy places to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , we didn’t enjoy it.

I reallllyyyy wish we had stayed in the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna for another night because this city is smaller with a lot more charm and really reminded me of many South and Central American cities.

I loved La Laguna Gran Hotel too and wish we had booked another night here.

I am really glad we left the airport in the evening on Friday and drove 40 minutes close to Masca Valley as this enabled us to wake up in the mountains and be close to the first stop on our Tenerife road trip itinerary. I also really liked Hotel La Casona del Patio because it was so traditional.

We packed a lot in on Saturday because on Monday my husband had to work from the hotel. In a way, we were lucky because the weather wasn’t great on Saturday, it was warm and clear but very windy so we couldn’t go swimming. If it had been nice weather and we had swam and enjoyed the beaches, we wouldn’t have been able to fit as much in on one day in Tenerife as we did.

Best Places to Visit in Tenerife

Here are many of the top places to visit in Tenerife that you’ll want to go on a road trip in Tenerife because many of these can only be accessed with your own car!

Masca Valley

Masca Valley is an absolute highlight in Tenerife and if you’re like me, you definitely didn’t know such places existed in Tenerife and it’s top of my list in best places to visit in Tenerife!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Masca Village

Masca is a small hidden village within the Masca Valley with a very small population. Now, it is one of the major tourist destinations in Tenerife with lots of tours visiting as well as tourists like us hiring a car and going as part of a Tenerife road trip or day trip, but there’s a reason why it’s so popular!

The road leading to Masca has a lot of sharp hairpin turns so it definitely requires some concentration and cautiousness.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, windy roads in Masca Valley Tenerife

After passing through the town of Santiago de Teide (we stayed overnight here so we could go to Masca first thing the next day which was not only a great way to start the day, but a great time to miss a lot of the crowds! We stayed at Hotel La Casona del Patio which we really liked!) you’ll come across lots of viewpoints and lay-bys to stop in to take in the view before you decend into the village.

I was wondering how far you need to travel down into the village to get the iconic shot with the village and the rock above it and to get these photos, we parked up just before the roundabout turning into the village which was a popular spot for many with car parking spaces.

If you have time, you can go for a wander into the town of Masca and get a coffee in one of the cafes in Masca . There are many walking and hiking opportunities in the area, hiking the Masca Canyon is one of the popular things to do in Tenerife. Or you can carry on down the windy roads to Masca Beach / Playa de Masca!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Ellie in Masca Village

When I asked on my Instagram, where to visit in Tenerife, a few people told me to go to Garachico and I’m so glad we did.

It’s one of the prettiest towns in Tenerife with lots of colourful buildings and a fantastic coastline to walk along. I loved it as it reminded me so much of towns I’ve seen in South and Central America.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, street in Garachico

Garachico is one of the popular places to visit in Tenerife on a day trip , especially from the South Coast so do expect it to get busy, but when I went on a Saturday lunchtime at the start of October it was lovely.

Most of the top things to do in Garachico are visiting lovely buildings and churches , plus relaxing in the main square which we did whilst eating some authentic Churros! This is great if like us, you’re going your road trip around Tenerife out of the summer season where the beaches and ocean are more off limits.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, main square in Garachico

If you are doing this road trip in Tenerife in Summer, you can also enjoy the natural swimming pools of El Caleton and Garachico Beach .

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, ocean and natural pools in Garachico

Icod de los Vinos

Like probably most people, we got pulled to the town of Icod de los Vinos because of Drago de Icod de los Vinos which is the lone Dracaena Tree estimated to be 1000 years old that sits in the middle of the town.

Although the tree is impressive, we didn’t pay to see it up close and we weren’t a huge fan of Icod de los Vinos, however it’s on this list of places to go in Tenerife because if you are doing this driving around Tenerife with children, it does have some good tourist attractions like a Butterfly farm and plenty of places to eat to break up a drive with kids.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Drago de Icod de los Vinos

Charco del Viento

There are many natural pools in Tenerife to swim in, and and Charco del Viento is one of the best natural pools in Tenerife to visit because it’s not hugely close to a town and therefore is going to attract fewer people than the likes or Garachico I mentioned above where the El Caleton pools are right in the town.

It was a bit of a random drive down a side road along a huge banana plantation to get here but well worth it for what was waiting for us.

Although the weather was not good enough for us to swim, we could see how amazing these natural pools were along with the small pebble beach areas, and even if you are aren’t coming to swim as we weren’t, it’s a great place to add to your Tenerife road trip itinerary, and I read it’s lovely at sunset !

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Charco del Viento natural pools

Rambla de Castro

If you’re looking for an alternative trip to Tenerife visiting more off the beaten path destinations , Rambla de Castro and it’s hike, is for you and should be on your Tenerife itinerary!

This is a nature preserve in Tenerife with spectacular views across the ocean. The Rambla de Castro hike starts in the city of Puerto de la Cruz, here’s a great post on how to do the Rambla de Castro hike .

Puerto de la Cruz

Known for being one of the first tourism destinations in the world, as you creep up West Coast from Southern Tenerife to Northern Tenerife, you’ll come across the popular resort town of Puerto de la Cruz.

With just a few days in Tenerife, we didn’t visit, but if you have 1 week in Tenerife, it should be on your list to see how this popular resort has kept some of its old charm.

There are many things to do in Puerto de la Cruz like visiting its famous black sandy beach , chill and swim at the huge Lago Martianez swimming pool and visit the Old Quarter .

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Lago Martianez swimming pool in Puerto de la Cruz

Piscina natural de Jover

Another one of the popular natural swimming pools in Tenerife, this one is much further up North so perfect if you are focusing on Northern Tenerife more on your Tenerife road trip, in fact, there are so many gems and amazing places to visit in Northern Tenerife !

One of the great things about being up in this part of the island is that there are not lots of resorts around here and therefore, this swimming pool is going to be much quieter, or at least quieter from tourists and more popular with locals.

We really pushed ourselves to visit Chinamada at the end of a long one day in Tenerife and I’m so glad we did!

We had to drive through the beautiful, and windy, roads of Anaga Rural Park to reach here (more on that soon) and when we arrived in the small remote village of Chinamada we couldn’t believe it.

It’s a remote place but definitely not cut off, there was one restaurant, a church and a few houses. We walked up a track and got an incredible view of the mountains and I saw many footpaths carrying along the mountains in different directions.

Playa de Benijo

Benijo Beach is one of the popular and best beaches in Tenerife to visit because of the rock formations along the coastline , known as the Roques de Anaga rock formations.

Because of it’s location it’s a great place for sunset in Tenerife too so try to plan this into your Tenerife road trip itinerary!

Anaga Rural Park

We drove through Anaga Rural Park to get to Chinamada in the North from San Cristobal de la Laguna and we were so surprised by this mountainous forest! This is not what we expected Tenerife to look like at all!

After some research , I found that the forest is called a laurel forest made up of laurel trees which is a type of subtropical forest that grows in areas of mild temperatures and high humidity, this is probably why it looked so unique.

If you have more time in Tenerife than we did with our long weekend in Tenerife, perhaps you have 1 week in Tenerife, I really recommend planning in time here to do some hikes and walks . Just from driving along the (windy) road up to Chinamada we saw so many lay-by’s to park in and footpaths leading from the road into the forest, or you can go to the visitor centre at Cruz del Carmen and start a walk from there.

For unique things to do in Tenerife, going walking here, or even just driving through Anaga Rural Park is something you should do!

San Cristobal de La Laguna

We stayed overnight in this city and I really liked the vibe. It’s a much smaller city than the nearby capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife but has plenty of amentities, and therefore felt like it had more charm , especially in the old town area . We stayed at La Laguna Gran Hotel which we loved and we loved the old surrounding streets.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Reception area in San Cristobal de La Laguna hotel La Laguna Gran Hotel

These really reminded me of being in South America and I later read that the city was the model for several colonial cities in Latin America, so that now makes sense!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, San Cristobal de La Laguna street in morning

Before you leave San Cristobal de La Laguna, or as you arrive, be sure to drive out of the city and up to Mirador de Jardina which is a viewpoint that looks over the whole city and the surrounding mountains!

It’s also easy to add into your road trip Tenerife itinerary because its on the way to Anaga Rural Park and Chinamada so you can visit them all in one go as we did!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, city view from Mirador de Jardina

Mount Teide National Park

This is one of the main places to visit in Tenerife that would bring me back to this Canary island because driving through here and seeing all of the places to go in Teide National Park was so spectacular!

We had just stayed overnight in San Cristobal de La Laguna at La Laguna Gran Hotel which was the perfect place to drive from the North of the island into the middle of the island to Teide National Park. Firstly we drove through Las Lagunetas which is a natural reserve and we were blown away by the forestry here and all of the beautiful pine tree’s lining the roads, especially as we were driving in the morning with the morning sun rising.

Then, we entered Teide National Park and drove along the mountain roads where with amazing views, especially as we started to see Mount Teide – the highest mountain in Spain, emerge!

For your Tenerife road trip, I’d really recommend driving into Teide National Park from the North of the island as it was the best drive in Tenerife for us !

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, road in Mount Teide National Park

Because we spent our one day in Tenerife in this area hiking Mount Teide we didn’t get to explore much of the area but there are many things to do in Teide National Park and ways to see Mount Teide National Park like taking the Mount Teide Cable Car close to the Summit, hiking , go Stargazing , visiting the Teide Observatory and if you don’t have a plan or know what to do in Teide National Park, there are plenty of lay-bys you can just pull into with signs leading away from the road that you can just follow and explore for yourself!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, Mount Teide National Park hiking sign

Mount Teide

Finally, easily one of the top places to visit in Tenerife is Mount Teide! This is Spain’s highest Mountain at 3715m and it’s the third largest volcanic structure in the world with the first 2 being in Hawaii!

There are many ways you can visit Mount Teide, if people don’t have a car they can get a tour bus to Mount Teide and then get the cable car up to see the amazing views from very near the top of Mount Teide. For those that are doing a self drive road trip in Tenerife like we did, you can either get the cable car to the top too, or hike as we did!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Tenerife road trip, hiking to the top of Mount Teide

Here is my full post on how to hike Mount Teide from the bottom, all the way to the top! To go to the very peak and summit of Mount Teide you do have to apply for a permit in advance , the permit is free but they do sell out a few months in advance so you do have to be organised and book this a few months out.

Otherwise, from hiking or from the cable car , you can go very close to the summit, see the views and have a little walk before returning to the bottom by cable car or by foot.

East Coast of Tenerife

For even more ideas of where to go in Tenerife, the East Coast looks like it has some nice places too, especially the North East. Unfortunately, I did not have time to see this side but I love this post on places to visit on the East Coast of Tenerife so have a read of this too!

South Coast of Tenerife

For more places to visit in Tenerife, there is the South coast of Tenerife . This is generally where holiday tourists go and many of the Tenerife tourist attractions like Siam Park are. If you’re looking for places off the beaten path in Tenerife, the South might not be for you, like it wasn’t for us, but just incase, here are the top places to visit in South Tenerife .

Tenerife Road Trip Ideas: 4 Scenic Drives to Take on Tenerife Island

Picture this – the wind in your hair, the sun on your face, and you are cruising along the winding roads that bring you through different climatic zones to impressive landscapes that seem to change around every bend. That’s the magic of the Tenerife road trip where every turn is a revelation and each kilometer is an invitation to explore the island’s hidden gems.

It is difficult to visit this Canary Island without renting a car and going for a drive. Well, technically not difficult as you can just come and stay in one of the beautiful Tenerife hotels and go on tours to see the island’s main highlights.

But! If you really want to see how diverse the landscape is and how much beauty the coastline hides, you gotta plan a road trip in Tenerife at least in one direction!

I drove around the island too many times, exploring it thoroughly and extensively popping into its charming towns along the coast and making stops wherever I wished. All my road trips brought me to the point where I wanted to sit down and share the best locations for Tenerife scenic drives and highlight only the best stops.

So if you are planning your Tenerife road trip itinerary, this post will give you many ideas. This is why buckle up and let’s hit the road to discover Tenerife’s road trip secrets! And then if you will road trip in Tenerife in winter, do not forget to pack a long-sleeve pullover and even a cardigan-sweater for Teide , in the mountains it will be cold!

Planning Your Tenerife Road Trip Soon?

You will need a car for sure! Depending on the season when you travel, rental cars in Tenerife can be expensive.

So in order to save money, I recommend you look for cars from Okay Mobility or Top Car company . They have reasonable prices for both cars and insurance packages throughout the entire year. I rent from them regularly until this day while living in Tenerife and it’s always easy and affordable.

Also, see some of my tips for driving in Tenerife to know what to expect from Tenerife roads, parking, and rental car insurance.

Tenerife Road Trip Ideas – 4 Scenic Routes Not to Miss

Northern tenerife road trip from la laguna to chamorga through anaga rural park.

Suggested Route : La Laguna – Anaga Visitor Center – Playa de Benijo – Chamorga – Playa de las Teresitas – Santa Cruz de Tenerife

  • Distance : ~ 90km (56 miles)
  • Driving Time : ~ 3 hours (without stops)
  • Best Time to Go : year-round but cloudy weather advised
  • Navigation Link : Google Maps

This road trip in Tenerife seems to be short when in reality every place on this drive has a ton of things to do. Most of the activities are tied to nature and in one day you can go hiking, swimming on one of the most beautiful beaches in northern Tenerife, exploring one of the ancient villages, or just enjoy beautiful views everywhere.

scenic drives in Tenerife

Since the drive goes through Anaga Rural Park which is in northern Tenerife , you either have to stay overnight not far from La Laguna or Santa Cruz (where you start), or be ready to come early to the starting point (early, if you want to see everything).

It is better to start this road trip from La Laguna where you can have a hearty breakfast at first (and the route is more scenic there when you drive into the forest, not backward, with a few vista points), and exit the park on the TF-12 road towards Playa de las Teresitas which also opens up views when you drive down.

La Laguna houses

When taking this road trip , you’ll have a chance to visit one of the most unusual parks in the entire Canary Islands archipelago Anaga Rural Park with its own ecosystem and climate.

road trip in Tenerife

Within the park, besides hiking trails, go to at least one village (like Chinamada with cave homes like in Cappadocia , Tachero, or/and Chamorga) and drive to a unique and beautiful Benije Beach (with rocks that descend straight into the sea and have already become a symbol of this beach) next to a remote and unspoiled natural beauty village Almaciga with sharp mountains on different sides.

road trip through Anaga rural park

The road that leads to the beach through the village and park is a separate attraction. It amazes with its landscapes of laurel forest, unsurpassed views of the Atlantic Ocean, and mountain ranges with rocks and cliffs. Everything around is worth stopping by on each turn and taking lots of beautiful photos!

walking on Benijo beach

And then in the second part of the day, if time allows (if not, return on another road trip), when you get to Chamorga, you can go on a hike to the most northern point of Tenerife with more views and remote gems of Tenerife.

I have a guide to the Chamorga to Roque Bermejo hike through an atypical and uncrowded part of Anaga National Park which you need to read if you want a unique hike on a road trip through Anaga.

Scenic Drive From Santiago Del Teide to Garachico Through Teno Mountains

Suggested Route : Santiago del Teide – Masca – El Palmar – Buenavista del Norte – Puertito de los Silos – Garachico – Icod de los Vinos – San Juan del Reparo – Ruigomez – Erjos – Santiago del Tedie

  • Distance : ~ 60km (38 miles without side trips)
  • Driving Time : ~ 2 hours (without stops)
  • Best Time to Go : year-round

This road trip goes through northwest of Tenerife and is a loop (besides a few detours) which means you won’t need extra time just to drive back to the starting point.

It is among the best scenic drives on the island that can be done in a day and you can start it from both, south and north of Tenerife . But ideally, it is best to go on this road trip if you stay in the area of Purto de La Cruz or Los Gigantes (Puerto de Santiago), Playa Paraiso, Adeje, or Los Cristianos.

Punta de Teno

While the driving time here is only two hours, don’t let it fool you. You can spend a whole day In Garachico and Icod de los Vinos alone. These two are beautiful and famous towns that are well worth visiting.

But before you get to them, there are also small villages on this route like Masca and Las Lagunetas as well as Buenavista del Norte with its Punta de Teno Nature Preserve which are also worth a detour. On the way to Buenavista, make a quick stop by Montaña la Saorra which looks like a cut pie and is a unique attraction to see in Tenerife.

Masca village Tenerife

In Punta de Teno in particular, there is a unique chance to go to a beautiful lighthouse Mirador Punta del Frailete situated in a scenic area surrounded by volcanic cliffs on one side and Los Gigantos mountains on another.

Puertito de los Silos has a few beautiful trails great for coastal walks and a volcanic rock pool which is mainly frequented by locals.

Visiting all the stops along the route can be quite time-consuming. And you may need to decide for yourself in advance how much time to spend in each place. This drive is however about magnificent views and curvy mountain roads.

In fact, if you prefer to stay in different parts of the island on your trip, there is a good 4-star hotel in Garachico – Hotel LIVVO La Quinta Roja . This hotel is in a real restored 16th-century house.

old dragon tree in Icod de Los Vinos

One location on the list – Puertito de los Silos is a bit out of the way and visiting during the day by car is not possible (you need to leave it at the parking lot and take a bus or hike to it but hike is quite long). So you have to decide whether you have time for it or skip it.

Tenerife By Car From Arona to Puerto de la Cruz Through Teide National Park

Suggested Route : Arona – Vilaflor – Cañada Blanca Visitor Center – Teide Cable Car – El Portillo Visitor Center – La Orotava – Puerto de la Cruz

  • Distance : ~ 83km (50 miles)
  • Best Time to Go : year around but in winter road closures are possible due to ice and snow

This is definitely a must-do type of drive for anyone who comes to Tenerife for at least a week. Teide Nationa Park is the main highlight of the island featuring the famous Teide Vulcano and surreal scenic views of magma formation fields and rocks and looks out of this world.

But before you get to Teide, there are many things to see in this part of Tenerife with car and the first place where to make a stop is Arona village followed by Vilaflor.

Arona town

Arona in particular has one interesting place which is the aloe farm Finca Canarias where you can stop by to see the cultivation and processing of aloe vera, purchase their beautiful products, and even taste a freshly made aloe vera drink. It is one of the unique things to do in Tenerife that the majority don’t know about. So don’t miss it when using this Tenerife road trip itinerary.

Vilaflor is a rural town with vineyards where the scenery already changed compared to Arona. The streets and squares there retain numerous architectural features from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Tenerife south view from Arona

There are two visitor centers at the Southern and Northern park entrances (which I highly recommend you check out), where you can learn a lot about Tenerife’s geological history, Teide and other volcanoes, and scientific work on the island.

You don’t need to necessarily make a stop at each Visitor Center, but pick at least one because it is really worth the time.

Cañada Blanca Visitor Center is a newer museum, it is very nice, modern and has exhibitions about the life around Teide throughout centuries. Not to mention there is a lovely cafe where to have coffee or sandwich with the view of Teide and famous Roques de Garcia, bathrooms, and little shops for souvenirs and small stuff.

road trip through Teide National Park

El Portillo Visitor Center is an older museum with interacting exhibits that tell the story of Teide’s influence on the surrounding flora and fauna.

Teide Cable Car offers a fantastic viewpoint but expect to spend a few hours up on the mountain. You decide whether to include the cable car in this drive or return to it at a different time.

As you head toward La Laguna, you will pass Teide Observatory. The general public is not allowed to enter its grounds on its own but I recommend you book a guided tour to learn about Astronomy and the Observatory life and purpose. When I took it with Anya and her mom, our guide Adrian was so amazing that he answered a dozen of our questions about the cosmos which made our tour last longer than it originally had to be. Sharing some photos below.

on a tour to Teide observatory

But if you want to go even further, then better take a stargazing tour to really embrace yourself to the astronomy experience.

For the rest of the drive start heading towards La Orotava. This road will take you through a spectacular forest with lots of Canarian Pine Trees giving it a more northern type of look, very different from what you see by the coast. If you get lucky, you might get some mist to enhance your road trip with a mysterious atmosphere.

northern Tenerife nature

With more time left in a day, I would strongly recommend spending some time in La Orotava as it is one of the prettiest and liveliest towns in Tenerife . And then for the sunset , drive down to Puerto de la Cruz to Playa del Castillo (beach) or Playa Maria Jimenez.

If you are staying in the south, it would only take about an hour to drive on the TF-1 motorway back there.

Tenerife by car

But, if you have an opportunity, spend a night in Puerto de la Cruz city. There are a lot of things to do in and around its historical center, including Loro Park , a few pretty coastal trails, and fine black sand beaches. Also, this city is home to some great restaurants, and pretty streets to walk around. No wonder Agatha Christie loved having a holiday there where she wrote some of her novels!

For a night stay, check out Atlantic Mirage Suites & Spa , an excellent hotel where budget meets quality and the location is just stunning.

Quick Scenic Road Trip Through Northern Tenerife

Suggested Route:  Puerto de la Cruz – Playa Los Patos – La Quinta – El Sauzal – Bajamar – Punta del Hidalgo – La Laguna (through Tegueste)

  • Distance:  ~60 km (37 miles)
  • Driving Time:  ~2 hours (without stops)
  • Best Time to go:  year-round
  • Navigation Link:  Google Maps

Here is one of my favorite roads in Tenerife with a bunch of scenic locations (I am living in the area and know every single street and corner and can tell with confidence this drive is really awesome!)

northern Tenerife road trip

It is more of a short but still full-day road trip for those who stay up north. The drive will take you through a small portion of the northern part of the island and will work especially well for those who are already staying in Puerto de la Cruz or within a reasonable distance from the city.

For instance, start your day with an amazing breakfast (if it is not included in your stay) in one of the (amazing) cafes in the center The Brunch Factory Take a quick stroll through an old town, have a cup of coffee, and then head out to Playa Los Patos.

There are two things you can do at Playa Los Patos. One is to actually enjoy the beach for some time (if you brought your swimsuits), as this is one of the nicest beaches in the area.

beach in Tenerife north

However, if you are not up to beach time, you don’t even have to descend to the beach, as there is a nice trail you can walk along right on top of the cliffs, offering great views and serenity. The trail is not very long, so you won’t lose much time out of your trip.

The next stop – La Quinta, will take you to another nicer trail farther up the hills. The path is part of a pristine neighborhood and is not long at all. But totally worth stopping by. There is also a unique park in the neighborhood with an interesting sculpture (La Giganta) which is a representation of a woman sitting and taking a break.

places to visit in Tenerife north

Another stop, just a short drive away – El Sauzal, not popular among tourists town but with its own charm and cool things to do.

I suggest you drive to the Parish of St. Peter the Apostle Church as it is the very center where you can have a lunch break, especially if traveling on a budget (prices in El Sauzal are on the lower side). Our favorite places to eat there are Gustossa Lounge Bar or Bar Pizzeria L’Appetitosa . Both offer a pleasant atmosphere, very good food for lunch, and appealing prices.

Tenerife road trip

For the rest of the day, I recommend you drive towards Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, two lesser-visited but so cute towns where international tourists almost never go, only locals and people from mainland Spain.

They are famous for huge waves, migrating routes for whales and dolphins, hidden natural pools, and just stunning landscapes (very different from what you saw earlier!)

road trip in Tenerife

End your day in La Laguna, a former capital of Tenerife, full of life and historic gems. It would be ideal to stay here overnight as the town really has a lot to offer. Plus, if you want, you can continue from there towards Anaga Rural Park and follow my road trip itinerary for that area.

Top 10 Tenerife Drives

There's some pretty dramatic scenery if you follow the tarmac in the right direction in Tenerife. So fill up with petrol, wind the window down (or even better, rent a convertible ) and enjoy the views on our top 10 Tenerife drives.

1. Valle San Lorenzo to Gúímar

Before the TF1 motorway opened, the only way to get from the capital to the south of Tenerife was via a sinuous road which connects a series of bridges over deep ravines like a tarmac dot to dot. Through deserted villages, picturesque hamlets and cave-pocked landscapes, driving this needs a stomach for twists and turns and an empty memory card.

2. La Laguna to El Portillo

One of the Tenerife island drives with the biggest WOW factor, this spinal route takes you through eucalyptus and pine scented, dappled loveliness offering jaw-dropping views over both sides of the island. The road passes through the amazing La Tarte rock formation and onto the Astrophysics Observatory which looks like Dr Evil's lair.

3. Boca Tauce to Roques de García

Drive anywhere away from the motorways on Tenerife and you'll forget why you have a fourth gear and remember what the steering wheel's for until you get to Boca Tauce. One of the straightest stretches of road on the island, drivers will love flooring the pedal on this one. Passengers can enjoy watching the landscape morph from pine to lava as it flies past the window.

4. Santiago del Teide to Masca

If you like to gawp at the scenery when you're behind the wheel, consider someone else for the job. This is roller coaster of a road which has to be taken very slowly and is subsequently possibly the safest stretch of road on the island. But for passengers, it's a real show stopper as you twist down the near-vertical cliff side overlooking the village of Masca.

5. Masca to Los Silos

Having conquered the Santiago del Teide approach road, this is the driver's reward, but very few ever take it. Continue through Masca and emerge at the 'giant pie with a slice taken out of it' of El Palmar. Through country villages and along the beautiful north coast, you'll find very little other traffic and plenty of opportunity to merge driving with gawping, all the way to the picturesque town of Los Silos.

6. La Orotava to Icod de los Vinos

Combine a beautiful drive with a tour of Tenerife's most historic towns beginning with aristocratic La Orotava, famed for its traditional balconies and its flower carpets. Taking in  Los Realejos with its fairy tale church spire, and epic panoramas, the road climbs to El Lance from where paragliders launch themselves off an urge we have always managed to resist.

7. Puerto de la Cruz to Los Silos

Tracing Tenerife's most beautiful coastline, this drive takes in old haciendas set amongst palm groves and shady roadside parks filled with picnic tables and barbecue areas just crying out for a couple of steaks to be thrown onto the grill. As if that wasn't enough, it also takes you into the heart of Tenerife's charismatic town of Garachico .

8. San Andrés to Pico del Inglés

Beginning with the fishing village of San Andrés with its excellent restaurants, the road climbs into the ancient Anaga Mountains with amazing views over the dramatic highland landscape. Take a trip to tiny Taganana, which is as much fun to visit as it is to say, and to Roque de las Bodegas where coach loads come to try the seafood, before arriving at one of the best viewpoints on the island. We should call this drive 'fish and cliffs'.

9. Adeje to Los Gigantes

The TF 47 coastal drive takes in the sunny, west coast resorts of Playa San Juan, Alcalá, Playa de la Arena and Puerto Santiago before culminating beneath the 'giants' of Los Gigantes . At each resort, park the car and head to the sea to find their prettiest faces, beaches and lots of opportunities to lighten the wallet on family favourite drinks and snacks .

10. Los Cristianos to Vilaflor

Following the TF28 as it climbs out of Los Cristianos , the road travels through La Camella and Valle San Lorenzo before turning left and climbing to Spain's highest village. From coast to 1500 metres above sea level and from sprawling modern resort to traditional village in under an hour, this is a route straight from Dr Who's secret map of time travel drives.

If you fancy a more sedate form of sightseeing, climb out of your car and check out our Tenerife Top 10 Walks .

Embark on the Ultimate Tenerife Road Trip: Your Essential Guide to the Island’s Best Route

Go on a tenerife road trip.

In this blog, we will help you plan your perfect road trip in Tenerife. We have put together some of the must-sees of Tenerife that can be visited by car. If you don’t have a car, you can find some other possibilities for how to explore Tenerife. Down below you will find information about driving in Tenerife and the beautiful places to drive to. If you want to share your own road trip through Tenerife with others, feel free to leave a comment!

Driving in Tenerife

Driving in Tenerife can be an adventure in itself. There are some very narrow mountain roads on the island which are not always perfectly maintained. It can often be a difficult task to even find a parking space. The locals have very little patience when driving in Tenerife and often have their own style of driving, therefore it is good to be well prepared and have some tips for driving in Tenerife.

Tips for driving in Tenerife

  • Make sure to keep enough distance from other vehicles when you drive in Tenerife. A lot of people don’t use their direction indicator and can stop or make a turn spontaneously.
  • When driving in Tenerife to places like El Teide and Masca , you should be very careful not to leave anything valuable in the car if you are planning to park there.
  • Try to be in the south of Tenerife before dark since many roads, especially in the north of Tenerife, have no road lighting.

How old do I have to be to hire a car in Tenerife?

Hire a car in Tenerife only if you are a confident driver – otherwise, it is not worth the stress. If you are not sure, it is better to consider one of our Tenerife excursions instead. The cheapest car hire in Tenerife can be found at the airport. You’d have to be at least 23 years old normally and it’s a great option for a longer duration car hire.

With Club Canary, you can rent a car in Tenerife from the age of 18 years and older as long as you have a valid driving license. Our prices for car hire start from 45€ and include insurance, car delivery and car collection. The car is normally delivered with a full or half tank and you’ll have to return it the same way. If you would like to see what kind of cars we offer, contact Club Canary team via live chat or send us a message through social media .

Car routes of Tenerife

A very popular choice is to hire a car in Tenerife for 2 days. You could use the car for a 1-day west Tenerife road trip and the second day do the road trip to Tenerife north. If you would like to visit El Teide during your holiday as well, check out some of the options like Mount Teide Stargazing Tour or a quad tour to El Teide .

How long does it takes to drive around Tenerife?

Drive around Tenerife takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes if you always drive on the highway and do not deviate onto any other road. However, this way you won’t be driving through the most interesting spots on the island. Below you can find different routes that make stops at the places you must visit in Tenerife.

Road trip Tenerife West

You start driving from Tenerife south to Los Gigantes where you can find the spectacular cliffs and beautiful natural swimming pools. Then you drive to Masca, where you get to enjoy some of the best views of Tenerife and it’s also a lovely place to stop for a Barraquito . Next, you drive to Garachico where you can find one of the most popular natural pools of Tenerife . After that, you drive to Icod de Los Vinos which is famous for its dragon tree .

Then you can choose to either drive to Puerto de la Cruz or La Orotava or drive directly back to Costa Adeje from the highway TF1 under Santa Cruz. During this road trip in Tenerife, you will cover about 210 kilometres and drive for about 3 and a half hours. Click here to find this route on Google maps .

Tenerife road trip to Masca village

West Tenerife road trip + driving to Mount Teide

This is an alternative for the road trip mentioned above and includes driving to El Teide. First, you drive to Vilaflor which is the highest village in Tenerife. From there, you’ll keep driving towards Mount Teide and once you arrive at the National Park you can enjoy a beautiful walk there and take pictures. It’s not advised to use the cable car because it takes a lot of time. After that you drive to Icod de Los Vinos, then Garachico and some other nice stops will be in Los Silos, Masca and Los Gigantes.

When you follow this tour, try to leave Masca before sunset since it can be really dangerous in the dark because of the curvy and narrow mountain roads and no lighting. This Tenerife road trip is about 185 kilometers and you will be driving for about 4 and a half hours. Google maps route can be found here .

The National Park of El Teide

North Tenerife road trip

You drive from Tenerife south to the Pyramids of Güimar (if you don’t find this interesting you can skip it). The next nice stop is in Candelaria where you can visit the basilica located next to the town square and enjoy a drink or ice cream in one of the lovely little cafes. You might also consider visiting Santa Cruz , the capital of Tenerife, which is known as one of the best shopping places in Tenerife . In case you only want to see one city in Tenerife and shopping is not quite your priority, we’d recommend visiting La Laguna instead.

La Laguna is a charming old city with less traffic and is home to the oldest university in the Canary Islands. Another great place to visit in Tenerife near La Laguna is Bajamar which is known for its surf culture and beautiful natural swimming pools. After seeing Bajamar you can drive through the Parque Rural de Anaga to Taganana where you can admire the beautiful nature of Tenerife. Afterwards, you can also stop by the viewpoint of Playa de las Teresitas where you can take some great pictures. This road trip of Tenerife is about 242 kilometers in total and you’re driving for around 4 hours long.  You can see this route in Google maps from here .

Restaurants in Tenerife during the road trip

After or during your road trip in Tenerife you will get hungry and now that you’re away from the tourist area, it’s a great opportunity to visit some of the local Canarian restaurants. During the west Tenerife road trip, and when stopping in Garachico, a nice place for lunch is a restaurant called Los Pinos . On your way back from west Tenerife road trip + Teide and after stopping by Los Gigantes, you can visit the lovely town of San Juan where you will find a lovely fish restaurant called Taberna Maritima Agua y Sal . During the Tenerife north road trip, a nice place to have lunch in Taganana is at the restaurant called Guachinche Bibi y Mana .

When you take the highway on the way back from Tenerife North and Tenerife west road trip, you can visit the fish village of Tenerife called San Miguel de Tajao, where you can find a lot of great fish restaurants and one of them is Delicias de Mar . Some of the other top local restaurants in the south of Tenerife where you can eat some good meat are Mesón Era Las Mozas and Tasca Tierras del Sur . Ps don’t forget to order the Canarian potatoes with your food.

Top things to see in Tenerife by car

tour tenerife by car

Tenerife has so much more to offer than glistening resorts and cocktails by the pool. Tenerife is a paradise volcanic island with a landscape so diverse that you simply have to rent a car and take a Tenerife road trip to see all of the unique places that Tenerife has to offer. From rugged black sandy beaches, insane moon-like scenery, dense forests and jungles to quaint whitewashed fishing villages and bustling cosmopolitan cities, Tenerife really does have so much to see and do.

The Best Time to visit Tenerife

The sub tropical climate of Tenerife offers warm sunshine throughout the year so there is no bad time to visit Tenerife. Known as the ‘island of eternal spring’, Tenerife offers the highest temperatures from June to September but the warm temperatures and smaller crowds make it the ideal destination for some winter sun. Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands and is also the one with the highest altitude thanks to Mount Teide , making it the perfect destination to explore by car.

Is it difficult to drive in Tenerife?

Driving in Tenerife isn’t that different to any other European city. You will drive on the right hand side of the road (which will feel strange for those of you travelling from Ireland or the U.K.), but signage and rules of the road are similar or identical to most other countries. You will need a valid driving licence to rent a car in Tenerife but you will be pleased to hear that renting a car in Tenerife is cheap which many companies offering 3 days for the same price as 2.

Road above the clouds at Mount Teide National Park. Driving in Tenerife on a Tenerife Road Trip

Tenerife Road Trip

Tenerife has a toll-free motorway network  which connects the capital city and airports with most major resorts on the island and there are plans to extend it to completely circumnavigate the island, so, it is easy to drive when you stick to these roads. However, certain places like Masca Village involve driving on narrow, extremely windy roads so good driving skill and confidence will be required. The altitude of Tenerife means that some roads, like in Mount Teide National Park feel like there is a sheer drop on one side (guarded by guard rails) so is not for the faint hearted or those that simply want a relaxing holiday. But for the adventurous among you renting a car and taking a Tenerife road trip will take you to the most rewarding and astonishing places that you will ever see.

Best places to see in Tenerife by car

We travelled to Tenerife on a family holiday in early September and while it is great to relax by the pool, cocktail in hand, soaking up the glorious sunshine we weren’t prepared to spend 7 days doing the same thing. Besides, we knew just how incredible and diverse the Tenerife landscape was and we didn’t want to miss it! So we rented a car for two days and set off on our Tenerife road trip.

We are listing these top attractions in Tenerife to see by car in sequence so that you can visit them in order and spend less time driving but feel free to mix it up and plan your own Tenerife road trip itinerary .

Playa de Las Teresitas

Of course Tenerife is famous for its volcanic black sand beaches but you can find some idyllic white sand beaches too. You just need to know where to look! This beach is paradise but this long stretch of sandy beach is actually artifical. In the 1950’s several of Tenerife’s black sand beaches kept disappearing as locals used the sand for construction work. The Spanish government imported some golden white sand from the Sahara Desert to rectify the problem and the result is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Located in the village of San Andrés, this golden sand beach is remarkable because it is full of palm trees that make it look like an exotic beach in Thailand. The tranquility of its water, thanks to the installation of breakwaters, makes it an ideal place for swimming.

Playa de Las Teresitas in Tenerife, Canary Islands in Spain

There is ample parking at this beach and it is very easy to get to. There is even a cute little beach cafe that you can sit at and enjoy a drink and a light snack. As you approach the northern part of the island by car you may find that the climate changes and it is more cloudy than the sunny south. You may even find yourself driving among the clouds at some points which is a vey cool experience.

Exploring Tenerife by car

Playa de Benijo

If you love to see nature at its most raw, you simply must visit the beach of Benijo. Located in Anaga Rural Park (Parque Rural de Anaga) in the north-east of the island, Playa de Benijo is the gold at the end of a rainbow. You will find it at the end of a road that winds its way through a laurel forest with spectacular views over the Atlantic and a section of terrain with ravines and peaks that are breathtaking to look at.

Aerial view of Playa de Benijo beach on Tenerife, a must see spot on your Tenerife Road Trip.

I don’t know why but it gave us Jurassic Park vibes. It boasts a unique landscape on the island and fabulous views of the Roques de Anaga rock formations. Sunsets there are simply magical, especially when the glimmering sea contrasts with the red horizon and the dark outline of the volcanic rocks rising from the depths of the ocean. It really does make you feel like you are stepping into your very own science fiction novel.

Benijo is the most remote beach belonging to the town of Taganana. If you are looking for other beaches in this area then check out the beaches of El Roque de las Bodegas and Almáciga. To get to Playa de Benijo, you will have to walk along a path with steps so it may be difficult for those of you travelling with chronic illness (like me). I still struggle with steps following my battle with Lyme Disease . You can get reasonably close by car, and there are plenty of restaurants nearby to taste some typical Tenerife recipes. Make sure to try Papas Arrugadas (Canary Potatoes) while you are in the Anaga region.

Plate of Canary Potatoes in Tenerife

Also worth noting that due to the solitude this location offers it is quite popular with nudists.

Anaga Rural Park

Driving through Anaga Rural Park we couldn’t believe our eyes. In total contrast to the the dry, arid and volcanic landscape of the south of the island we found the north of the island lush with the most incredible vegetation and a slightly cooler climate. In fact the north and south of Tenerife are worlds apart which is why we are recommending that you rent a car to see it all.

Pathway through rows of Laurel tree forest in Anaga Rural Park Tenerife a must see place on a Tenerife road trip

Eploring Anaga is a journey to a place with an authentic rural flavour. A journey back in time, when the relationship between humans and nature was much stronger. The smells up here hit you differently as they are carried by the clouds.

Anaga Rural Park in Tenerife covered by clouds.

The roads up here are a little crazy, very windy with some very sharp turns. So, take it slow and make sure that you are a careful and experienced driver before attempting this drive.

Road through Anaga Rural Park in Tenerife

The Anaga forest covers over 37,000 acres and includes parts of La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Tegueste. It is a designated Biosphere Reserve with forests of twisty laurel trees, the type of forest only preserved in the Canary Islands and the Azores. If you love nature then this is the place to be. The natural scenery is made of laurels, lichens, willows, fayas, and other plant species that give the forest a magical vibe. Also, Anaga has some interesting geological formations, such as rocks, dikes, cliffs, and ravines, as well as an ethereal mist. It’s a must-see on your Tenerife road trip!

Clouds in the trees at Anaga Rural Park in Tenerife

There are lots of hiking trails to choose from in Anaga Rural Park and make sure that you don’t miss this unique photo spot at Camino Viejo al Pico del Inglés . In fact, most of our top attractions to see in Tenerife by car also double up as the best Instagram spots in Tenerife.

Social la Quinta Garden in Santa Ursula

There is a beautiful communal garden and park in the small village of Santa Ursula that is worth stopping by if you are passing. I wouldn’t neccessarily make the journey for it alone. The highlight is The Giantess a unique sculpture emerging from a rocky bed in a seated position, part made from plants so that it blends perfectly with the landscape. It certainly makes for a unique photo.

Giant sculpture made out of flowers to visit on your Tenerife road trip

There is also Second World War bunker (Bunker de la Quinta) and a Canarian Wine Press in the area to visit.

Sculpture made out of flowers and plants in Tenerife

Google Map co-ordinates are 28.4306, -16.49147 because this sculpture can be a little tricky to find. Please refer to our map above if you want to find exact co-ordinates of all of the locations on our Tenerife road trip.

Drago Siete Fuentes

Another thing that will give you Jurassic Park vibes are the incredible Dragon Trees that are unique to the Canary Islands. They are said to be thousands of years old and are a symbol of Tenerife. Dragon trees exude a dark red gum resin, known as dragon’s blood. Ancient Greeks, Romans and Arabs used dragon’s blood for its medicinal properties. Dragon tree resin, also known as dragon tears or dragon’s blood, has long been used as incense for clearing negative energy before and after ceremonies. It was also called upon in ritual magic and alchemy.

This particular tree, Drago Siete Fuentes, is off the beaten path but it is worth it for the elevated views over the Tenerife coastline and the fact that it is harder to find and is a total hidden gem means that you will have it all to yourself. It is located at the bottom of a cul-de-sac in the beautiful (and hilly) town of Los Realejos. Drago Siete Fuentes is named after a Count by that name and the abandoned Hacienda from the 17th century where the tree grows.

Girl wearing a white and blue dress and sun hat standing under a dragon tree called Drago Siete Fuentes in Tenerife. One of the best things to see on a Tenerife road trip.

These Google Map co-ordinates (28.39057, -16.58623) will bring you to the cul-de-sac where you can park your rental car. From there you will see a gap in the wall and a dust path that will lead you to the tree, which should be visible. It does feel a little strange and like you are trespassing on property but it is allowed. There you will find one of Tenerife’s most incredible Dragon Trees and better still have it all to yourself.

If you would prefer to see one that is less off the beaten path, more touristy and with more amenities then check out Millenial Dragon Tree Park .

Playa de Castro

If you are looking for a secluded beach with a waterfall and a hidden cave in a protected natural area then you are going to love Playa de Castro. Playa de Castro is located in the north of Tenerife near Puerto de La Cruz in the region of Los Realejos. This beach is relatively hidden and must be reached through the protected area of the Rambla de Castro, a wonderful hike that can be taken in the area.

Rocky beach with a waterfall in Tenerife

We came to Playa de Castro looking for the hidden waterfall but we soon realised that it would be a million steps down to the beach. That would be fine, but, it also meant that there would be a million steps back up to reach the car and, after my Lyme Disease, my body just isn’t able for that after developing some autoimmunity to my muscles. Travelling with chronic illness means that, if, you are already having a full day of physical activity, added exertions like hikes and climbs just aren’t possible. So, we missed the waterfall but got to see some other cool things in the area and fly our drone.

The drone became our eyes and we found some additional hidden gems along the coast like El Elevador de Aguas de Gordejuela, also known as Casa Hamilton, an industrial ruin that seemed to be built into the cliff face. It was built in 1903 by the Hamilton company to pump water from the Gordejuela springs to banana plantations in the Orotava Valley.

Abandoned factory on the coastline of Tenerife, a cool thing to see on a Tenerife road trip

There was also the Hermitage of San Pedro, a beautiful little chapel built in the 17th century. It is next to the Camino Real (hiking trail) and located in front of a cross called Castro. There are some beautiful walks along the Rambla de Castro to enjoy so if you have more energy than me, we highly recommend them as they are breathtaking.

Woman in a red dress standing in front of a yellow church called Hermitage of San Pedro in Tenerife

For able-bodied travellers looking for an adventure you will love this! The journey to the beach begins at the viewpoint called San Pedro, where there is a restaurant overlooking banana plantations and the dramatic Tenerife coastline. There are two paths leading down, which are separated by a parking lot next to the restaurant. It’s up to you which one you will decide to go, because they both meet down at a signpost.

The way down leads mostly through dusty paths and over a couple of wooden bridges. In some parts of the trail you may feel like you are lost in a beautiful oasis full of palm trees but, the part of the trail leading down to the beach itself is supposed to be quite challenging and takes some time. Be careful! It is definitely worth the effort. This is not a trail for flip flops! So leave those at the pool and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

The beach itself is full of stones and pebbles right after the descent, but it also hides a beautiful black shimmering sand. Playa de Castro is not a big beach and if there is a high tide, the sandy beach is hidden under water except for the mentioned stones, so make sure that you check tide times before your descent. On the right side there is a giant rock with a small cave and on the left side a magical waterfall flowing from the rock directly onto the beach.

Charco de la Laja

After all this driving and hiking on your Tenerife road trip you will be looking for a place to cool down and recharge your batteries. We have found a hidden gem of a swimming spot just for you!

Aerial view of a woman in a red swimming suit swimming in charco de la laja natural swimming pool in Tenerife

Located in the rustic and charming village of San Juan de la Rambla you will find the most spectacular natural swimming pool, formed by rugged lava rocks cradling a portion of the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can swim in crystal clear, still and azure blue waters protected by the volcanic rocks from the waves crashing all around you. It is a phenomenal experience and one of our favourite things to do in Tenerife.

Masca Valley

As we mentioned earlier the twisty roads down to Masca Valley in Tenerife are not for the faint-hearted but if you can brave them you will be met with some of the most jaw-dropping scenery you will ever see. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time.

Windy road into Masca Valley Tenerife

It may be difficult to reach but the journey is absolutely worth it. Masca, is without doubt, one of the most scenic places in Tenerife. It almost makes you feel like you’ve journeyed to the centre of earth. The scenery from this tiny village lost in the middle of the mountains is absolutely incredible. If you look up you just might see a Barbary Falcon flying overhead.

Woman in a red dress sitting on a wall overlooking the village of Masca in Tenerife one of the best places to visit on a Tenerife road trip.

You mostly come here for the views. There isn’t that much to do here. Even though driving down here it feels like you have left modern civilisation behind, Masca can still cater for the masses of tourists that come to visit each day. If you do fancy a hike, there is a 4.5km hike from the village down to the ocean and a spectacular beach.

Masca Village in Tenerife

We were simply content sitting at the beautiful restaurant at the entrance to the village and soaking up the majestic views. After the stress of driving down here and almost losing our brand new drone over the ravine because it went out of range we needed the break!

Los Gigantes

Next stop on your Tenerife road trip are the enormous cliffs of Los Gigantes. Translated as The Giants, Los Gigantes is a small seaside resort nestled into the gigantic cliffs of the same name. Head to the Mirador de Archipenque, on the approach road to the town, to get the best view of these imposing 600-metre high cliffs.

Woman in a floral dress at Mirador de Archipenque lookout over Los Gigantes cliffs in Tenerife

Located on the west coast of the island, Los Gigantes rise majestically from the sea in the form of vertical rock walls. The ancient aboriginal inhabitants of Tenerife referred to Los Gigantes as “Muralla del Infierno” or “Muralla del Diablo” and considered them a sacred area. For them they represented the end of the world!

If you do have time to spend here, park your car at the marina and have a wander through the town. Or even take a boat tour out towards the cliffs. It is a great place to go whale watching.

The Ritz Carlton, Abama

While it is not technically a tourist attraction, if you are also using this post to double up as the best Instagram spots in Tenerife, it is worth stopping at The Ritz Carlton Abama for some refreshments.

Set in Tenerife’s southwest coast, The Ritz Carlton Abama consists of salmon pink Moorish-style buildings housing guestrooms and villas. The resort is set in lush tropical gardens on a cliff top, with a Resort Train that will take you down to an exclusive beach. It is a timeless island retreat overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and neighbouring island of La Gomera. It has 7 outdoor pools, an award-winning spa and is in close distance to a golf course, a tennis academy and golden-sand beach.

Playa Amarilla

Amarilla in Spanish means yellow but don’t expect miles of golden beaches here. Instead the beach gets its name from its overlooking hill and the eye-catching colourful geological formations. This is a rocky area with access to the sea via steps. The sea is beautifully warm and clear, and you can take refreshments at the nearby chironguito.

Mount Teide National Park

We are saving the best for last for a reason. Mount Teide dominates the Tenerife skyline and we think it is best to enjoy a drive through Mount Teide National Park just before the sun sets. You will have some breathtaking views to enjoy.

Mount Teide in Tenerife at sunset

However, if your plan is to get a cable car to the top of the volcano we recommend that you do so early in the morning before the throngs of tourists arrive. And, if you are up for more of a challenge you can climb to the top of the volcano yourself but bear in mind that it is a 5 hour hike and you will have to apply for a permit . It’s free but it is required before attempting to climb to the summit. If climbing is not your thing you can simply enjoy the views from the panoramic viewpoints installed at the base of Mount Teide.

Make sure to book your cable car ticket in advance.

Whatever way you choose to reach the top, be prepared. There is a huge drop in temperature up there and less oxygen due to the altitude. So only attempt what you feel comfortable doing, bring warm clothes and don’t be surprised to find yourself throwing snowballs.

Mount Teide in Tenerife at sunset

Within the Mount Teide National Park, you can also visit the Teide Observatory, one of the major international astronomical observatories. You will need to book in advance and confirm opening days. If the Observatory is closed, there is an option to do an incredible stargazing tour instead .

Unique lava rock formations at Mount Teide in Tenerife. A must see place on a Tenerife road trip

The landscape in Mount Teide National Park is something you will have never experienced before. We are sure that you have heard the words lunar landscape before when referencing this area but you would be forgiven for feeling like you have also stepped onto Mars. Here you will discover unique volcanic landscapes with craters, chimneys and large flows of solidified lava. If you still want to do a hike in Mount Teide National Park but, don’t want to climb all the way to the top, there are lots of options to choose from. One of the most popular hikes is Las Roques de García . It is a relatively easy hike and one that you shouldn’t miss.

Woman in a red dress walking in the lunar landscape of Mount Teide National Park Tenerife

Another must-see hike is the one at Mirador de Sámara. Despite being at a similar height as Roque de García, the landscape and views here are completely different. This hike is famous because of the distinctive view of the pine trees growing out of the black lava field, with the summit of Mount Teide on one side and a sea view on the other. The trail is around 10km long, with an elevation change of 400m and takes around 2.5 hours.

Unusual geological formations in the volcanic rock in Mount Teide National Park

If you are driving, two viewpoints worth stopping at are the Mirador La Tarta, where you can get the photo above and Mirador Azulejos II, where you can get this incredible shot of Mount Teide below.

If you have chosen not to rent a car but still want to take a Tenerife road trip by bus then fear not, there are many Mount Teide tours to chose from. You can even have a driver take you by jeep or if are feeling really adventurous explore Mount Teide by quad bikes !

los cristianos attractions tenerife

If you're staying in the southern part of Tenerife, which is where the island's main tourist resorts are located, it's quite easy to get around and explore various areas.

Depending on where you're staying you can even walk between places, like from Costa Adeje to Los Cristianos, or from Playa La Arena to Los Gigantes.

If you want to move around you can also hire a car (although parking can be difficult in most resorts), use the bus (guagua) or you can use the local taxi.

The main tourist areas and resorts in Tenerife are:

  • Playa Las Americas
  • Costa Adeje
  • Los Cristianos
  • Los Gigantes
  • Playa La Arena
  • Callao Salvaje
  • Puerto de la Cruz (the only resort on this list that is not in proximity to the other resorts)

siam park tenerife

The famous Siam Park was named as the best water park in the world for the second year in a row. You can visit the park at any time of the year, as the pools are heated to a comfortable 24 Celsius. We usually go to Tenerife in winter, so we visited the park in January and February and we had a great time, as it's far less crowded than in summer (just be sure to choose a sunny day for your visit if you are heading over in winter).

  • Full-day entrance ticket to Siam Park
  • Experience the biggest man-made wave in the world
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity starts

aqualand tenerife costa adeje

Aqualand is usually best suited for people traveling with younger kids, as they also have included access to a dolphin show at the same price. Some people recommend Aqualand over Siam Park because they had more attractions for younger kids, but Siam Park has recently opened a brand new area for kids, so if we had to pick one, we definitely prefer Siam Park over Aqualand, but it's good to know that you have options.

  • Entry into the park with use of all water rides
  • Dolphin show

loro park tenerife

Loro Parque is considered to be the best zoo in the world, as it was voted on first position by Tripadvisor users who have visited. We have visited Loro Parque several times and we loved it every time, all the animals are well taken care of and they have several shows that you can attend.

  •  Tenerife’s world-famous animal adventure park
  • One of the top attractions in the Canary Islands
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund

If you plan to visit both Siam and Loro Parque you can buy a combined twin ticket, as it's more convenient this way.

  • Book online: Loro Park & Siam Park Combined Ticket

jungle park

Jungle Park is another animal park in Tenerife, this time located in the South, very close to Los Cristianos. The park is beautifully landscaped and it truly looks like a jungle in some areas, with the luxurious vegetation and colorful flowers.

The park offers a free bus transfer from several resorts in Tenerife South, so it's easy to get there even if you don't have a rental car.

  • Entry to the park
  • Birds of prey in free flight show
  • Exotic birds in free flight show
  • Sea lion show
  • Penguin feeding time

best beaches tenerife

Ever wondered how many beaches there are in Tenerife? We have prepared a list of 101 beaches in Tenerife for you to discover and enjoy, but we're certain that you can still find some that are not on our list.

So please don't go to the same beach every day and go out to explore more of Tenerife. Also, here's a shorter list of the best beaches in Tenerife (in our opinion).

Teide tenerife 600 250

This is a MUST while in Tenerife. You get to see a unique volcanic landscape, with lots of great views, with Mt Teide at the center of it all.

Explore Mount Teide's most iconic places with an official guide, then hop on the cable car, which takes you almost to the summit. The cable car takes you all the way to 3.555 m, which will give you spectacular views over the national park. We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes and also bring a jacket or a cardigan, no matter the time of year since it can be very windy sometimes.

  • Includes transport from the North and South of the island
  • Official guide
  • Includes Teide cable car ticket
  • Discover the most visited National Park in Spain

If you want to climb on top of Mount Teide, you should reserve a permit ahead of time.

los gigantes cliffs tenerife

Don't miss the chance to see the cliffs in Los Gigantes or Acantilados de Los Gigantes as they are named in Spanish. You can spend some time on the beach (Playa Los Guios), but if you want to enjoy one of the best views of the cliffs you should head over to Mirador de Archipenque (this is the perfect spot to watch the sunset, as it offers a lovely view of La Gomera, the neighboring island).

From the marina in Los Gigantes, you also have the option to go on boat trips and the cruise by sail boat is one of the most popular in this part of Tenerife.

  • Time to swim and snorkel
  • Fresh fruit, home-made sandwiches (vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options) & Beverages, including cava, white and red wine, beer and soft drinks
  • 3-hour whale-watching cruise and time to swim and snorkel

masca tenerife

Masca is a picturesque village , settled inland in a location where residents of Tenerife used to hide when they were being attacked by pirates. If you have a hire car you can get there on your own, but you should try to get there as early in the morning as possible, otherwise, it gets really crowded.

The views are spectacular and there is a restaurant overlooking the valley, where you have to go even if only for a cup of coffee (the view is definitely included in the above-average price, but it's worth it).

whale watching dolphin boat trip tenerife

No holiday to Tenerife would be complete without a boat trip where you can see dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are ideal for spotting these majestic mammals and this 3 hours cruise also includes unlimited drinks, champagne, snacks and hotel pick-up.

  • Includes unlimited drinks
  • Champagne, Ham, cheese, and salad baguettes
  • Sonar equipment for listening to the dolphins and whales

garachico tenerife

A visit to Garachico is like going back in time: this small town has a rather dark history, being destroyed not once, but two times by volcanic eruptions.

Walk on its narrow streets, eat great ice cream on the seashore, and if you're visiting during the summer months, go swimming in the natural pools.

The natural pools in Garachico are actually a huge Tenerife attraction in summer, and they are popular not only with tourists but with the locals as well, so be prepared for big crowds, especially during those hot July and August weekend days.

dragon tree icod de los vinos tenerife

El Drago or the Dragon Tree is the island's most popular tree. The best view is the one from the town square, so there's no need to pay to see it up close. We totally recommend spending some time visiting Icod de los Vinos , a small town where you can see some buildings with typical Canarian architecture and wooden balconies. Garachico and Icod de los Vinos are situated very close to one another, so you should visit them on the same day.

If you want more ideas for a holiday that doesn't break the budget, read our article about free things to do in Tenerife .

dolphins tenerife canary islands

Snorkel alongside turtles in a non-intrusive way on a kayaking adventure in Tenerife that respects the animal's welfare and freedom.

Home to up to 5 different species of dolphins, including bottlenose dolphins, the waters just off the island’s coast are ideal to marvel at these lovable creatures.

Take a submarine dive in the lesser-explored waters of southern Tenerife.

This is a pretty unique experience and an exciting thing to do with kids in Tenerife, since they will be so thrilled to hop on a submarine and see the most exciting marine creatures in their natural environment.

The submarine dive takes around 50 minutes and it's a great activity for the entire family while on holiday in Tenerife.

la laguna tenerife

The town of San Cristobal de la Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it deserves at least a few hours to walk around and see the beautiful buildings. If you're with the kids you may want to visit the Museum of Science and the Cosmos and why not also the Museum of History and Anthropology.

anaga tenerife

The Anaga forest is one of the most magical places in Tenerife, with its laurel trees and wild beaches like the popular Benijo beach. If you have rented a car for your holiday, don't miss a day trip to this part of the island as it's one of Tenerife's most amazing places to see and visit. Look up at the weather forecast before you make the trip though, as sometimes it can be cloudy and foggy (especially during the winter months).

sunset in teide national park tenerife

Did you know that Tenerife is a great location for stargazing?

Watching the sunset in Teide National Park while sipping from a glass of champagne is really a unique experience, the views are incredible, you get to see the best sights inside the park and then you get to have a nice dinner, followed by a session of stargazing.

We went on this tour with Teide by Night a few years ago and our guide was really funny and knowledgeable, so we not only found out a lot of new things about Tenerife, but we were really blown away by the stargazing experience inside the national park.

  • Includes 3-course meal with wines, water, and coffee
  • Pick up from the South Coast of Tenerife
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before activity starts

santa cruz de tenerife

If you're having a cloudy day in the south and you don't know what to do in Tenerife besides laying by the pool, you could go and visit the island's capital - Santa Cruz de Tenerife . You have many things to do, including great shopping opportunities (the only Primark on the island is located inside Meridiano Shopping Center).

hiking tenerife

Tenerife is an amazing destination for hiking and the best time for this activity is between October and May when the temperatures during the day are ideal for walking (during the summer it can be too hot).

We have an entire article about the best hiking trails in Tenerife (in our opinion, based on the hikes we did) but even out of those we definitely recommend you do the Chinyero Loop and the hike through the Enchanted Forest El Pijaral (Bosque Encantado), in order to see up close the beauty of the Anaga forest.

walking in tenerife

In case you don't want to hike or you just don't have the proper hiking equipment with you... you can also walk and discover the beauty of Tenerife by choosing an easy path. We've walked from Los Gigantes to Playa San Juan (not in one go, but it is possible) and we've walked almost the entire southern coast, another town or resort every day, usually walking by the ocean on the promenade (when possible).

tenerife carnival

The carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second largest in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro and it is truly an amazing experience, especially if you want to mingle with the locals and party all night long. We've participated in the 2019 edition of the carnival and we loved the parades (especially the one on Friday, when the carnival is inaugurated), and then of course we loved the parties in the various squares in the city, the costumes, and the music.

la gomera canary islands

La Gomera is the island that you see every day if you are staying in the south of Tenerife. The island is much smaller compared to Tenerife, but it hides tremendous beauty, an amazing national park and forest and winding roads that lead to lookout points with modern architecture.

From Tenerife South, you can book a day tour that includes the ferry ride, transfer on the island in order to see all the best places, and lunch at Mirador Abrante (probably the most Instagrammed place on La Gomera).

  • Pickup from the south of Tenerife
  • Transfers & ferry (with live tour guide)
  • Lunch at Mirador Abrante

punta de teno tenerife

The view from Punta de Teno is amazing, as you get to see the cliffs of Los Gigantes from the other side. You can't visit the lighthouse, unfortunately, but the view is enough to be worth the drive there. There is also a small and pebbly beach there and when the ocean is calm you can swim here while enjoying the sight of the Los Gigantes Cliffs.

We have been to Punta de Teno several times, as it's one of our favorite places to visit in Tenerife, due to the spectacular views of the ocean and the cliffs, and we can tell you that the experience varies a lot depending on the weather. The place still looks impressive even when it's cloudy or rainy (some may even like the dramatic colors), but for a first-time experience, we definitely recommend visiting Punta de Teno on a dry and sunny day.

Most of the tourist resorts in Tenerife have a weekly market, where you can buy all sorts of things, from clothes, souvenirs, and handmade items to fake bags and watches, so if you want to do some shopping while there, check out the list of markets in Tenerife to see which is the nearest one to you.

Los Cristianos, Adeje, Alcala, and El Medano, all have a market and the items sold there are very similar since most vendors move daily from one market to the other.

guachinches tenerife

What is a Guachinche you may ask?

Well, a Guachinche is a type of local place to eat, specific to the island of Tenerife, or more specifically to the north of the island. A Guachinche should only serve local food, which should be accompanied by local wine (most of the Guachinches actually produce their own wine and this is a way to sell the wine directly to the public).

Most of the Guachinches that you can find in Tenerife are located in the following municipalities: Tacoronte, El Sauzal, Tegueste, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria de Acentejo, Santa Úrsula, La Orotava, Los Realejos, Icod de los Vinos. As you can see, these are not the usual tourist places, so here you'll find that most of the customers are residents, and it would be great if you could speak some Spanish, as most of the servers don't speak English.

Even so, eating at a Guachinche is one of the unique experiences in Tenerife and we always try to find new ones, especially around Tegueste, Los Realejos, or La Orotava, which are our favorite areas for this, as we really like the wine in those parts.

If you’re thinking about taking an excursion on Tenerife , you’re in for a treat. Many of the most popular day trips in Tenerife visit the island’s main points of interest, like Mount Teide, or involve fun activities like whale-watching.

Below, I’ll share the best excursions in Tenerife , including their prices and what to expect. I’d also like to point out that the best way to get around the island is by renting a car in Tenerife . However, if you don’t want to do that, you can book this tour from the north or this tour from the south , and explore the top attractions on the island. For example, both tours go to the amazing cliffs in Los Gigantes , the traditional town of Candelaria , the beautiful village of La Orotava , and other must-see places in Tenerife .

In addition to these two excursions, here are some tours in Tenerife that I recommend , whether you are driving or not:

  • Mount Teide
  • Dolphin and whale-watching
  • Submarine trip
  • Anaga Rural Park
  • Masca Gorge
  • Snorkeling with turtles
  • Stargazing from Mount Teide
  • Kayaking at Punta de Teno

1. Mount Teide, one of the most popular excursions in Tenerife

First, this tour is one of the best excursions in Tenerife , as it takes you to the island’s crown jewel, Mount Teide. This is one of the most iconic places to visit in Tenerife , and if you take this tour, you’ll have your transportation, cable car ticket, and hiking permit taken care of.

This Tenerife day tour departs from Puerto de la Cruz, where there are several pick-up points, and begins with a bus ride to the base of the cable car station in Teide National Park, at an elevation of 7,730 feet. From there, you’ll take the cable car up to La Rambleta, which is 11,665 feet above sea level. Then, it’s only about 650 feet to the top, so you’ll walk the Telesforo Bravo path to the end.

Mount Teide, excursions in tenerife

1. Mount Teide, one of the most popular excursions in Tenerife –  Efrén Yanes

The nice thing about booking this Tenerife excursion is that you won’t have to worry about getting the permit to access the summit since it’s included in your tour booking. You’ll also have the advantage of being accompanied by a guide, who will explain all kinds of interesting facts about Teide National Park, a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Highlights : Bus transportation, cable car ticket, and permit to access the summit with a guide
  • Duration : 5 hours approx.
  • Price from : €128
  • Departs from : Puerto de la Cruz
  • Description : This tour departs from Puerto de la Cruz and reaches the base of the cable car station in Teide National, where you’ll enjoy a 10-minute ride to La Rambleta. From there, you’ll hike to the top. This tour includes a hiking guide and your permit to access the summit.

This is one of the most comprehensive tours of Mount Teide , but if you’re interested in looking at other Mount Teide day trips, check out our guide. For example, this excursion includes bus transportation from Tenerife North and your cable car ticket, but not the permit to reach the summit. There is also this one , which includes the same things but departs from Tenerife South.

Honestly, if you just want to do the cable car trip and you have a car, you can do it on your own. Our guide on how to climb Teide has all the information you need .

2. Dolphin and whale-watching, the best tour in Tenerife

Without a doubt, a Tenerife dolphin trip is one of the coolest experiences and something we always try to do whenever we visit the island. You can see up to 21 different species of cetaceans here, with the dolphins and pilot whales being the easiest to spot.

Even if you can rent your own boat in Tenerife with a skipper , there are lots of whale and dolphin-watching tours in Tenerife , but I recommend the tour we took . It departs from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje and travels 2-2.5 miles to search for dolphins and whales. Best of all, this Tenerife boat trip takes place on a catamaran with a clear bottom, so you can see the cetaceans under the water.

Dolphin tour, tenerife day tours

The day we took this tour, we were lucky to see many species, including quite a few pilot whales. However, you should keep in mind that no two whale excursions in Tenerife are alike, as these are wild animals that live in total freedom. Even so, the tour operators have many years of experience, so they can predict the whales’ and dolphins’ movements with excellent accuracy.

  • Highlights : Dolphin and whale watching
  • Duration : 2 hours approx.
  • Price from : €27
  • Departs from : Puerto Colón, Costa Adeje
  • Description : Catamaran tour with a panoramic glass bottom to see dolphins and whales in the wild .

3. Submarine trip, a favorite tour in Tenerife for families and kids

A submarine trip is one of the most unique day trips from Tenerife that you can take. We have a complete guide on submarine tours in Tenerife , but I’ll tell you now that this dive is one of the best options.

You’ll board the Sub Fun Cinco, a bright yellow submarine with panoramic windows that will allow you to discover the Amarilla Marina area, one of the least explored regions in southern Tenerife. During the ride, keep your eyes peeled for flute fish, octopi, barracudas, parrot fish, manta rays, and other sea creatures.

Sub Fun Cinco, best day trips tenerife

Of course, this south Tenerife excursion includes a knowledgeable guide who will share curious facts and history about the marine life and the sub’s technical specifications. So, if you’re looking for a Tenerife sightseeing tour that’s out of this world, give this one a go.

  • Highlights : Submarine ride around the Amarilla Marina area of southern Tenerife with a guide
  • Duration : 50 min approx.
  • Price from : €57
  • Departs from : Marina San Miguel, San Miguel de Abona
  • Description : Take a trip in a submarine with panoramic windows to discover the seabed of the Amarilla Marina area .

4. Anaga Rural Park, an unforgettable day trip in Tenerife

Anaga Rural Park is one of the most beautiful places on the island, so it makes sense that it has some of the best tours in Tenerife . There are several ways to explore this magical place, so I recommend checking out all the options before deciding on one.

First, you can book this tour , which includes a guided walk through the Bosque de los Enigmas, one of the most popular trails in the park. It’s led by an expert guide who will share curious tales and facts about the forest.

Anaga Rural Park, island excursions tenerife

To do this excursion in Anaga, Tenerife , you’ll need a car to get to the meeting point (either Ermita de la Cruz del Carmen or San Cristóbal de La Laguna), from where you’ll board a bus. It may be a small inconvenience, but it’s a good option if you have a tight budget, as it’s one of the cheapest trips in Tenerife .

Another option is this excursion , which I recommend for people who don’t have a car or don’t want to deal with the bus. It includes transportation from San Cristóbal de La Laguna to Anaga Rural Park, where you’ll walk among the enchanted laurel forests. This tour also includes a guide and a delicious aperitif.

5. Masca Gorge, a guided tour in Tenerife for hiking enthusiasts

Another highly-rated guided tour in Tenerife is the descent into the Masca Gorge . This is one of the most popular hikes in Tenerife , so you won’t regret it.

The Masca Gorge is in Teno Rural Park and forms one of the most stunning landscapes on the island. In fact, it’s one of the most-visited places in Tenerife, after Mount Teide. One of the best ways to explore this striking area is by taking a guided excursion like this one .

The tour begins in the Plaza de Masca, where you’ll meet your group and begin the 6.2-mile walk. During the hike, you’ll descend the gorge, following the Masca stream to the beach. Then, you’ll make the ascent back up the ravine.

Barranco de Masca, tenerife tours sightseeing

The route is quite challenging, so I only recommend this Tenerife excursion for people who are in good physical shape and have hiking experience. Of course, if you tackle this route, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most impressive views on the island, so it’s well worth the effort.

  • Highlights : Guided hike through the Masca Ravine
  • Duration : 6-7 hours approx.
  • Price from : €35
  • Departs from : Plaza de Masca, in Masca
  • Description : Descend the Masca Gorge and visit Masca Beach, then make the ascent up the ravine. Includes hiking guide and permit .

6. Snorkeling with turtles, a breathtaking excursion in Tenerife

Another boat trip in Tenerife that you’ll enjoy is a snorkeling excursion. This way, you can witness the rich diversity of the seabed and maybe even dive among the sea turtles.

I recommend this tour in particular, which involves kayaking out to the sea. Since you’ll be in a kayak and not a motorized boat, you’ll be able to get closer to the turtles, dolphins, and other marine life without disturbing them. In fact, your chances of spotting dolphins are very high since up to five different species can be found in these waters.

Diving with sea turtles, day trips tenerife south

I consider this to be one of the best excursions in southern Tenerife , as nothing is quite as incredible as seeing these beautiful creatures up close. This tour also includes some time to go snorkeling among the sea turtles and fish, so it’s one of those activities in Tenerife South that you’ll never forget.

This excursion begins in Los Cristianos and includes all the necessary equipment and guided instruction that you’ll need. So, don’t hesitate to book your spot!

7. Star-gazing from Mount Teide, the best nighttime tour in Tenerife

The wondrous peaks of Mount Teide are a declared Starlight Reserve , meaning this natural area is protected in an effort to preserve its nighttime visibility. This also means it’s one of the best places to go star-gazing, photograph the Milky Way , and enjoy a night excursion in Tenerife .

If that sounds good to you, I recommend this tour , which will allow you to witness one of the most gorgeous sunsets on the island, followed by the starry night sky. You’ll be accompanied by an expert guide who will show you how to use telescopes to spot shooting stars, nebulae, star clusters, and some planets. If the conditions are just right, you can even see the Andromeda galaxy.

9. La Gomera, one of the best excursions from Tenerife to another Canary Island

Touring other Canary Islands from Tenerife is another great option, especially if you’ll be here for a few days. One of the islands you can easily visit from Tenerife is La Gomera . While it may be smaller than other islands in the Canary archipelago, it also has a peaceful atmosphere and well-maintained natural spaces.

Forest in La Gomera, excursions to do in tenerife

One of the best ways to explore different parts of La Gomera is by booking this excursion from southern Tenerife. It goes to several points of interest, including Garajonay National Park, Roque de Agando, and San Sebastián de La Gomera. If you’re staying in northern Tenerife, you can take this tour , which goes to the same attractions, but in reverse order. For even more options, check out our guide on taking the ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera .

Both of the tours I mentioned use the ferry, and your tickets are included in the price of the tour. Hands down, it’s one of the best options if you’re looking for a day trip in Tenerife that goes to one of the most beautiful Canary Islands .

10. La Palma, a fun boat trip in Tenerife

Another one of the best excursions in Tenerife goes to another island, specifically La Palma . This is considered one of the most gorgeous islands, as well as one of the quietest since it isn’t crowded with tourists.

You can take a boat trip from Tenerife to La Palma like this one . It departs from Los Cristianos and heads towards La Palma’s capital of Santa Cruz de La Palma. This city boasts a charming historic center, so you can start there and get to know the island.

Ruta de los Volcanes, best excursions on tenerife

During the tour, you’ll learn about the eruption of the Tajogaite Volcano, also known as Cumbre Vieja, as well as enjoy magnificent views from the La Concepción viewpoint, the highest part of the Caldera Volcano. You’ll also visit other famous places in La Palma , such as the Time Tunnel and the Tajuya viewpoint.

This excursion also includes lunch in Tazacorte, where you can try some typical Canarian dishes . As you can see, this is a very comprehensive day tour from Tenerife , so I know you’ll love it. Tenerife visitors often inquire about the possibility of utilizing the Teide Observatory's telescopes for stargazing. It's crucial to recognize that the Teide Observatory primarily serves as a scientific institution devoted to astronomical research and observations. Below are the key explanations why tourists typically do not have access to the observatory's telescopes:

  • Research Takes Precedence . The Teide Observatory's primary mission revolves around conducting cutting-edge scientific research in the field of astronomy. Astronomers and scholars hailing from different corners of the globe depend on the observatory's state-of-the-art telescopes and specialized instruments to scrutinize diverse celestial phenomena, spanning stars, planets, galaxies, and more. This research plays a pivotal role in advancing our comprehension of the universe.
  • Restricted Accessibility . Given the paramount importance of the research carried out at the observatory, access to its telescopes is subject to stringent restrictions . Astronomers and scientists have allocated specific time slots and meticulously planned observation schedules to execute their experiments and scientific observations. These schedules are devised months or even years in advance.
  • Specialized Equipment . The telescopes and scientific instruments housed at the Teide Observatory are exceptionally specialized and often necessitate technical expertise for their proper operation. They are not intended for casual or recreational stargazing by tourists.
  • Light Pollution Management . The Teide Observatory is strategically located within a designated Starlight Reserve , where concerted efforts are undertaken to minimize light pollution and maintain ideal conditions for astronomical observations. Allowing unregulated access to the telescopes could potentially disrupt these meticulously preserved conditions.
  • Educational Initiatives . While tourists may not engage with the observatory's telescopes for research-oriented purposes, several educational programs and guided tours are available, providing visitors with the chance to delve into the realm of astronomy. These programs facilitate night sky observation through smaller telescopes and offer valuable insights into the endeavors of astronomers and researchers.
  • Stargazing Excursions . Tenerife boasts an array of stargazing excursions and activities that enable tourists to savor the island's pristine night skies. TripsPoint offers you the best of all Tenerife stargazing excursions . Through professional telescopes designed for stargazing, participants can marvel at celestial objects.

In summation, although tourists generally do not have access to the Teide Observatory's telescopes for scientific undertakings, they can still relish the celestial wonders of Tenerife. These experiences offer a tourist-friendly and illuminating environment for all enthusiasts of the night sky.

Jay Slater fury as amateur sleuths go on 'tours' to Tenerife villa where teen disappeared

Dozens of visitors have travelled to Rural de Teno National Park in rental cars to try and solve the missing case of Jay Slater, the 19-year-old who vanished in the early hours of June 17 at the villa

Amateur sleuths have caused outrage after going on "safari tours" to the Tenerife villa where missing teen Jay Slater disappeared - with some even taking pictures from jeeps.

Dozens of visitors have travelled to Rural de Teno National Park in rental cars to try and solve the missing case of the 19-year-old who vanished in the early hours of June 17 at the villa. The road outside the two-bedroom farmhouse is being flooded with rental cars of British visitors as they take pictures from jeep "safari tours."

Shannon Shiels, a spa manager who lives in Birmingham and Spain, revealed she's just returned from a second trip to the island as she tries to entertain her own theories of what happened to Slater

She told The Times : “This is our second time here. I asked to drive this route because I just wanted to see it one more time. I want to get some answers." Shannon admitted the trip gave her "actual chills" as she investigated the property's green door along with her partner Matthew, who is from Manchester .

The huge interest comes as Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancs, had been partying at the New Rave Generation festival in the southwest of Tenerife before he vanished.

She is one of the many visitors who have travelled to the national park in recent days after reading about the missing teen's disappearance online, with TikTok and Facebook groups flooded with conspiracy theories.

“Armchair detectives” have been urged to stop sharing wild theories on the whereabouts of Jay Slater , including by the cop who hunted murderer Raoul Moat.

Speaking on a Sky podcast, Sue Sim, Northumbria Police ’s former chief constable who led the chase for murderer Moat, has said people should not speculate.

She said: “The worst thing people can do sitting at home in their armchairs is to speculate as to what might have happened. There has been no suggestion of crime happening in this instance and at this time.

"I would appeal for people [not to speculate]. The Guardia Civil and the mountain rescue team are all trained in this area of work. To actually go along as an upgraded armchair detective will not help Jay. If you have any intelligence, phone your local police who will get it out to the Guardia Civil. Don't just go and trample over potential evidential trails.

"I think social media can be an extremely useful tool but in this instance, it's very damaging to this enquiry. I would appeal to Jay's mum and his friends and family to not read this rubbish that is being bandied about, about your son and friend.

"Let the police do their job. And for people who have nothing better to do than put conspiracy theories onto social media, when a young man is missing, shame on you. It's absolutely appalling behaviour."
