Ayrshire Golf Tours

The Ayrshire coast is within 40 minutes of Glasgow Airport, 90 minutes of Gleneagles and is more than 2 hours from St Andrews. Troon and Turnberry are the focal points for the best golf in Ayrshire – the two centres are around 40 minutes from one another, which means comfortable driving distances to play the most sought after links courses.

Thanks to the warm water currents of the gulf stream that pass close to the coast Ayrshire enjoys a microclimate of mild winters and warm summers – ideal for golf!

Ayr is a bustling town and the historic centre. To the south, near the town of Girvan, lies the world famous Turnberry Resort which has hosted the ‘Open’ a number of times – ’77 is the one everyone remembers as the ‘Duel in the Sun’ starring Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. A couple of miles to the north is Prestwick which ‘Old’ Tom Morris and his contemporaries would be familiar with. Old Prestwick was the original venue of the ‘Open’ in the early years. A few miles further north is the town of Troon which probably needs no introduction – Royal Troon is another regular ‘Open’ venue and where Colin Montgomerie grew up and learnt his trade.

The above are just some of the ‘headline’ courses but what makes this area such a golfers mecca are the ‘classic’ links courses like Western Gailes, Glasgow Gailes, Kilmarnock Barassie and Prestwick St Nicholas. Throw into the mix a couple of James Braid specials like the heathland / links mix of Irvine Bogside, the parkland splendour of Ayr Belleisle then top it off with a sprinkling of local upscale public / private courses such as Lochgreen, Darley, Portland and Brunston Castle and you’ll begin to see why Ayrshire folk have a passion for the game.

This is a truly great course...

The hotel at Turnberry is excellent and makes for a great base for a weekend of golf in Scotland. The clubhouse grill in particular has a great atmospehere – and really good steaks!

As for the golf; the Ailsa was fabulous from start to finish and everyone agreed it was one of the best we have played. We were lucky to get to play it on a lovely afternoon without a breath of wind which was fantastic. This is a truly great course and its little brother, the Kintyre was no push over either!

The Ailsa Course speaks for itself...

Everything on our golf break to Turnberry went very much to plan – no problems at all! The weather was fantastic for the time of year and as many golfers will know, Turnberry is one of the best venues in the world for a golf break. The Ailsa Course speaks for itself but the Kintyre is a great golf course in its own right and the perfect warm up for the main event!

Both golf courses are perfectly complemented by the fantastic hotel and, if you haven’t already tried some, a pint or two of St Mungo is highly recommended.

Superb Course

Prestwick Golf Club is one of the finest Scottish Links courses I’ve been lucky enough to play. It offers a real test for all players. Many blind tee shots throughout, punishing rough for the odd wayward tee shot and (more often than not) sideways winds. Although tricky, the holes are stunning. Lots of nice Open Championship history in the clubhouse as it was the original host of The Open.

This place is beyond words...

There is no point in trying to describe experiencing Turnberry to the full over a couple of sunny spring days, this place is beyond words.

On the way back home, we tried to capture the pleasure of playing golf on two superb links courses, the relaxed hospitality, the iconic landscape, and I feel I must stop here or this will become a very long list of superlatives!

We can’t wait to arrange a return and we’d whole heartedly recommend this place to anyone who loves golf.

Dundonald Golf Links  

Lying next to Western Gailes, Glasgow Gailes and Kilmarnock Barassie, Dundonald Links is situated amidst some fine Ayrshire golfing country. Recognition of its qualities has resulted in it hosting a number of professional and amateur tournaments, including pre-qualifying for the European Tour and the Senior British Open Championship. It is holding the European Tours’ Scottish Open in 2017. The 4 Star Gailes Hotel is on its doorstep.

Glasgow Gailes

Glasgow Gailes was designed by Willie Park an Open Champion and he always believed this links to be one of his best creations. A classic links layout, is tough, fair and traditionally Scottish. Wild heather and gorse define the fairways whilst the greens are guarded by strategically placed bunkers. 

Selected by the R&A as a final qualifying venue for The Open Championship every time it has been at Royal Troon and Turnberry, it is held it great esteem. Sandy Lyle Scotlands Open and Masters Champion describes the course as “one of the world’s truly great tests of links golf’.

Prestwick Golf Club was founded in 1851. Located half an hour south west of Gasgow it lies on the famous golfing coast of Ayrshire. This stretch of golfing terrain is probably unequalled anywhere in the world. Prestwick which hosted the first Open Championship in 1860, shares its boundaries with Royal Troon. Kilmarnock Barassie, Glasgow Gailes, Western Gailes and Dundonald are all within a frew minutes drive and the Ailsa course at Turnberry only 20 minutes away.

Royal Troon

Overlooking the Isle of Arran, Royal Troon Golf Club is one of the great links courses in Scotland and an Open Championship venue. It offers visitors limited tee times on Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are 0930 - 1100 and 1430 - 1600 over both the Championship and Portland courses. New for 2009 is limited availability for play on Sunday afternoons. 

The course is only a few minutes from Prestwick Airport and less than thirty minutes from the centre of Glasgow.

Turnberry Ailsa

The Ailsa course is one of two magnificent championship courses at the stunning Turnberry Resort, the other being the Kintyre coures. The Ailsa has hosted 4 Open championships and seen some of the most remarkable moments in the championships history, like the “Duel in the Sun” between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus.

Always thought of as the most scenic Open Championship venue, the recent changes to the course by renowned golf architect Martin Ebert may make it one of the best layouts as well.

Western Gailes

Western Gailes is one of the top links courses in Ayrshire. Located between the Railway and the Sea both of which are brought into play if you stray a bit, it is typical of Ayrshire links golf.

The wind which may come from several direction and change during the course of your round, makes Western Gailes a stern test. Its diffuculty is added to by the undulating terrain and finely contoured greens which are set within the surrounding sand dunes.

A few meandering burns, a plentiful supply of pot bunkers and some out of bound makes Western Gailes a wonderful challenge.

the course is regularly used by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club as a qualifying venue for the Open Championship when it is being held at either the Ailsa course at Turnberry or Royal Troon.

Piersland House Hotel, Troon

The Piersland House Hotel in Troon is a classic 4 Star Ayrshire Hotel, located in Troon, Ayrshire close to the famous Royal Troon Golf Club and with easy access to Prestwick Airport.

It offers 37 en suite bedrooms some being within the Hotel, some in Lodges and the remainder in Cottage Suites.

Dine or relax with a drink in either the Walker Bar or the Red Bowl Resturant.

Joe, a retired mechanical engineer, hasn’t looked back since retiring. As a member at Prestwick St. Cuthbert Golf Club , Joe likes to get out on the course 2-3 times a week and enjoys playing courses throughout Scotland and getting in some early-season golf in the sunshine out in the Algarve. Joe is also a football fan and supports local team Ayr United. Current Handicap: 9

Chris Berry

Chris brings together a passion for tourism and travel along with his love of Ayrshire and its golf courses. After realising he couldn’t beat the family on the course, it was time to turn his attention to organising golf tours off it! He often visits Culzean Castle with his wife and two children and can be seen walking the golf courses with their cockapoo dog Rufus. Current Handicap: Married with kids!

Saltire Golf Tours is a small, family run company having started in 2022. Based in the heart of where we offer our core golf tours, we are well placed to provide you the perfect golf holiday. Saltire Golf Tours manage and run all their own tours and don’t sub-contract to any other agents or tour operators. We are also not bound with any restrictions on where we can take you.

Jim, also retired, combines his time between playing golf, darts and wood crafting. Once a single-handicapper, Jim now only plays golf during the spring and summer season and is a member of Prestwick St. Cuthbert Golf Club. Like most of the Berry’s, Jim is very competitive and still enjoys the challenge of competing and beating the family, especially his son Colin! Current Handicap: 18

Colin Berry

Colin is definitely the most talented golfer in the family. Combining his love of cars and golf, Colin travels around Scotland in the hunt of playing a new golf course and enjoys hill walking in his spare time with his spaniel dog Raz. A member of Loudoun Gowf Club , Colin is a 3-time Club Champion at Rowallan Castle Golf Club and won the Tam O’Shanter, one of Ayrshire’s biggest amateur competitions in 2019. Current Handicap: +1

How lucky are we to have three of the most famous courses in the world between Prestwick Golf Club – the birthplace of the Open Championship, Trump Turnberry – where we witnessed the ‘Duel In The Sun’ between Jack Nicholas and Tom Watson in 77′ and Royal Troon – which features on the Open rota and is home to one of the most difficult par-3’s in world golf; The Postage Stamp. In amongst these big-hitters, Ayrshire offers some of the most challenging links and parkland courses on offer and there are some hidden-gems here waiting to be played.

The niche of Heritage Golf Tours is to deliver a very authentic old-school customized Golf experience local to Troon and Ayrshire, based on local knowledge, local contacts and a passion for the game.

We welcome golfers to play modern golf, but will also share bits of history and insights into how golf was played back in time and compare that to today. Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland is the ideal golfing destination. There are 46 golf courses in Ayrshire and Arran, and 15 of them are True Links. Surrounding Troon you will find 9 true links adjacent to one another so that you can play a ball between all of them – a world record concentration of True Links on the entire planet! The area is steeped in golf history. Tom Morris lived here for 13 years and laid out Prestwick which was the birthplace of The Open in 1860. In total, The Open has been played 37 times in Ayrshire on Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry. The last Open was in 2016, won by Henrik Stenson in an epic battle with Phil Mickelson. And in 2024 The Open is returning to Troon.

Troon has a stunning location on a rock into the Firth of Clyde dividing 22 km of uninterrupted sand beaches with dunes to the north and 13 km to the south. This area is surrounded by the mentioned stretch of 9 True links. Troon also enjoys a micro climate with less rain due to the sheltering islands outside Troon.
