If you’ve never heard of the Rosario Islands before, you’re not alone. They’re some of the most under-the-radar, underrated islands in the Caribbean. However, with frequent, affordable flights between the U.S. and Cartagena, and the budget-friendly prices you’ll find on the islands, they’re among the best Caribbean destination for budget-conscious travelers.

Where are the Rosario Islands?

Located about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of the shore of Cartagena , the Rosario Islands are an easy day trip from Cartagena and a favorite excursion for visitors to the area.

The Rosario Islands are part of a national park ( Parque Nacional Natural Corales del Rosario y San Bernardo ) that consists mostly of islands and ocean off this section of Colombian coast, and is designed to protect the fragile ocean environment.

The Rosario Islands are close enough to Cartagena to be easily accessible by speed boat. The journey from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands generally takes around an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the type of boat you take to reach the islands – you’ll have plenty of options for how to get to the Rosario Islands, as they’re a popular day trip or overnight destination.

One benefit of the location of the Rosario Islands? While they are located within the Caribbean Sea, they are squarely OUTSIDE of the hurricane belt. Now, this doesn’t mean you’ll be totally immune to a rogue storm, you’ll have much more certainty if traveling during hurricane season (June through November) that you won’t have to postpone or cancel your travel plans.

Are the Rosario Islands Worth It?

Yes, a visit to the Rosario Islands is definitely worth it! Whether you just have time for a quick day trip from Cartagena or you’re planning a week-long getaway on a remote island, the stunning natural beauty of these islands is unmissable. It’s a fantastic budget Caribbean getaway to remember.

Of course, it’s best to spend at least one night in the Rosario Islands if you can fit it into your itinerary. You’ll have so much more time to enjoy the beaches and crystal-clear water, plus any of the unforgettable things to do in the Rosario Islands if you are able to spend a night here. Spreading out your travel over at least two days makes such a difference.

How Do You Get to the Rosario Islands?

There are plenty of different ways to get to the Rosario Islands, though the best one for you will depend on both your time and budget. Whatever your plans, you’ll be traveling here by boat… but which one?

Navigating travel to the Rosario Islands can be one of the most confusing aspects of traveling here – but it doesn’t have to be! These are all ways to get to the Rosario Islands:

1. Travel by Public Boat

Public speedboats to the Rosario Islands depart from Cartagena’s Muelle de la Bodeguita in the morning, with the last speedboat ferry leaving around 9:30 am for Isla Grande . This is the most economical travel option

Keep in mind that once you arrive to the main dock in the Rosario Islands (on Isla Grande), if you plan to stay the night or embark on another activity, you should have this planned in advance, as you’ll need transportation to get there. Hotels and hostels will have detailed information about how to arrive on their website or if you reach out to them directly after booking.

2. Book a Day Trip from Cartagena

Perhaps the best and most popular way to travel to the Rosario Islands is by booking a day trip from Cartagena . You can find all-inclusive day trips starting around $60 that will give you several hours on the water, zipping around to snorkeling spots and excellent beaches. Keep in mind, you can sometimes find less expensive trips, but they’ll often be very low quality, so be warned!

For the best day trips, I recommend booking ahead and avoiding the tour salesmen that often wander through Cartagena looking for tourists – these tours often pack unsuspecting travelers into tiny boats like sardines. Here are two great, quality options for day trips to the Rosario Islands:

3. Use a Day Trip from Cartagena as One-Way Transportation

Though less common, a great way to get from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands with the intention of sticking around to spend the night can actually be booking a day trip! Depending on the itinerary of the day trip, it may be more convenient to stick around and let the rest of the group return to Cartagena.

For example, say you book a day trip to the Rosario Islands that includes a stop at Hotel Islabela , a favorite spot for daytrippers. You could plan on spending the night there and making your way back by private boat or public ferry the next day, or a few days later! This is a great way to travel conveniently.

4. Travel by Private Boat

If you’d like to explore the islands with more freedom than a standard tour or excursion will allow, consider booking a private boat to cruise around the Rosario Islands . These can get pricey, but they’re incredibly well-done excursions and allow you to explore the best of the islands as you like.

Book ahead for the best rates and the most reliable tour operators.

Things To Do in the Rosario Islands

1. go snorkeling or diving.

Other than hitting the beach(es) in the Rosario Islands – a must for any visitor – one of the most popular things to do in the Rosario Islands is snorkeling or diving. With ultra-clear water and incredible corals and tropical fish to discover below the water’s surface, it’s a snorkelers dream destination.

Snorkeling will certainly be part of any Rosario Islands day trip from Cartagena , though if you’re staying at a hostel or hotel you’ll have plenty of options, too.

You’ll likely be able to swim and snorkel right in front of your accommodation , or hotels and hostels universally offer their own excursions to some of the best nearby spots for undersea exploration.

2. Practice Water Sports

This is the perfect spot for water sports like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. With mostly calm and flat waters, plus plenty of protected coves and areas of mangroves, there are plenty of great places around the islands for these water sports, and more.

If you’re interested in practicing water sports while in the Rosario Islands on a day trip, look for a day trip itinerary with a stop at a beach club , such as Hotel Islabela or other popular spots. These hotels will have the gear for you to rent and plenty of space for you to get out on the water.

If you’re staying at least one night in the Rosario Islands, even better. Hotels and hostels in the islands universally have water sports gear for rent, though check ahead with your accommodation beforehand if you have your heart set on one particular type of activity.

3. Swim with Bioluminescent Plankton

Imagine taking a dip in the ocean at nightfall and having the water light up all around you. This is a reality in parts of the Rosario Islands. Evening excursions to swim among bioluminescent plankton are some of the most popular in the Rosario Islands, and make for an unforgettable travel experience.

4. Party at Bora Bora Beach Club

If you’re looking for a bit more excitement, head to the Bora Bora Beach Club for an unforgettable beach party. There are popular day trips from Cartagena to Bora Bora for their beach parties , or you can visit from your accommodation on the Rosario Islands.

While it can get crowded during the high season, this just adds to the party atmosphere.

5. Visit Isla Barú and Playa Blanca

While not technically a part of the Rosario Islands, Isla Barú and its famous Playa Blanca are popular spots to visit in the area. While Isla Barú (Barú Island) is called an island, it wasn’t always one – it was formerly peninsula until the Spanish built a canal severing it from the mainland during the colonial era.

Isla Barú is home to plenty of hotels and beach clubs, as well as Playa Blanca, the largest stretch of white sand you’ll find on these islands. It’s a favorite (and affordable!) day trip destination .

Playa Blanca can get quite busy with day trippers visiting, so if you’re looking for more of a serene escape, either skip it or spend one night to enjoy the early morning and mid to late afternoons once the day trippers head back to the city.

6. Take an Islands Tour

If you’re not up for visiting Isla Barú and the famous Playa Blanca, consider booking an excursion around the rest of the Rosario Islands.

Hotels and hostels here organize regular small group and private excursions by boat around the islands for travelers to explore the many beaches, dive spots, and stunning natural areas the islands have to offer.

Where to Stay in the Rosario Islands

Most places to stay in the Rosario Islands are affordable, considering what you’ll get for the money. While some hotels and hostels out here are more expensive than what you’d find in Cartagena proper, you will save significantly over Caribbean resorts and even standard hotels in other beachfront Caribbean destinations .

Many hotels and hostels on the islands include room AND board, though drinks are usually extra. When you book a place to stay in the Rosario Islands, make sure you understand what is included in your room rate. These are some of the best places to consider as you decide where to stay in the Rosario Islands.

El Hamaquero Hostal ($)

If you’re looking for an excellent budget stay in the Rosario Islands, El Hamaquero Hostel should be at the very top of your list. Located on Isla Grande , this hostel is the perfect place to kick back on a budget, with a great mix of dorm rooms and private rooms, excellent and affordable excursions, and an incredible beachfront.

Plus, the hotel is very eco-friendly, using solar panels for energy and taking all kinds of measures to protect the lush environment and stunning ocean for years to come.

Hotel IslaBela ($)

The stunning Hotel IslaBela is the best value for your money in the Rosario Islands. Offering standard rooms and affordable bungalows, even backpackers can enjoy what feels like a much more luxurious hotel than the check would leave you to believe. The beachfront is stunning, the staff is helpful, and the food is delicious.

Be aware that during the day, daytrippers visit the hotel and make use of the beach and activities, meaning it can get busy during the high season, but the hotel clears out in the afternoon and is quite peaceful.

Hotel San Pedro de Majagua ($$)

Hotel San Pedro de Majagua is a dream. With it’s stunning white-sand beachfront and daybeds, outdoor massage palapas, and innumerable hammocks spread out around the gorgeous and lush property, you’ll never want to leave.

The hotel has its own dedicated speedboat from Cartagena, which makes getting here a breeze.

Hotel Isla del Sol ($$ – $$$)

The Hotel Isla del Sol is one of the best places to stay in the Rosario Islands if you’re a mid-range to luxury traveler or would just like to splurge a bit on an unforgettable stay.

This small and friendly hotel has a stunning beachfront, excellent food, personalized service and attention, and the incomparable ocean views you can expect when staying in the Rosario Islands. Rooms are dreamy, though you’ll probably be spending more of your time on your balcony, in a hammock, or at the pool!

The beaches in the islands are by far the best beaches near Cartagena and some of the best in all Colombia. They are basically a must do on any trip to Cartagena.

In the decade plus I lived in Cartagena, I had the chance to visit the Rosario Islands many times. At least a couple times a year we did a bit of staycation or touristing in our home town.

They are just so pretty, we couldn’t help but keep going back, and the beaches here are so much nicer than those in the city.

I also had the opportunity to visit the Rosario Islands in various ways.

From private boat rentals (our favorite way when we could get a group together), to day passes at resorts, to shared tours, to overnight stays at several of the resorts and ecolodges, we’ve done it all.

Here, I’m going to use all that experience to help give you the best tips for visiting the Rosario Islands of Cartagena, Colombia for yourself.

I like to give as much detail as possible with in depth guides, especially for places like the Rosario Islands in Cartagena that I know so well.

However, I know that sometimes, you just want some quick tips and may not have time to read about all the details.

So, in this first section I’ll go over the most important information give some quick tips for planning a visit to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena and try not to be too long winded. This section will also be a good introduction for those looking to read on and get even more details about the Rosario Islands below.

First off, what are, or maybe better ,where are the Rosario Islands?

The Rosario Islands are an island chain roughly an hour to an hour and a half off the coast of Cartagena. Called the Islas del Rosario in Spanish, they are a tiny chain of coral islands, some with barely more than a few square yards area. You can even see tiny little houses on their own private islands!

The waters here are really pretty and the entire area is actually a national park.

The islands are also fairly undeveloped. Originally settled by fisherman, there is one small community on Isla Grande plus a handful of hotels, eco-lodges, and private homes scatted around on the islands.

In my opinion, the best way to experience the islands is a private boat to the Rosario Islands. With a private charter, you have a lot of flexibility in how you spend your day and can stop at several stops for swimming, snorkeling, hanging on the beach.

Or you can just have a dance party on your boat all day!

Whatever you want, you can do. Plus you get to enjoy all the lovely scenery a lot more than on a shared tour or just going to one beach area and back.

While, yes, it’s the most costly way to visit the Rosario Islands, it’s surprisingly affordable, especially if you can get a group of 10 plus people together. Even if you can’t though, this is one of the things that is totally worth splurging a bit on.

You can also do shared boat tours to the island if you can’t put together a group or have the budget for a private boat. My top pick for this would be doing the catamaran tour of the Rosario Islands , which includes lunch and snorkeling.

There are also multi-island boat tours , that go on boats similar to the boats chartered for private rentals. While not quite as snazzy, they offer a good way to see multiple places at a much more affordable prices.

For those looking to snorkel at the reef and enjoy the neat scenery around the islands, one of these tours on boats from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands should be your top choice.

If you’re more interested in having lots of time relaxing on a beach, then you could opt for a day pass at a beach club or hotel, many of which also have overnight accommodations.

There are some great little eco-resorts and lodges out in the Rosario Islands. It’s worth keeping in mind there isn’t much else out here and you are an hour plus boat ride away.

So, I only recommend staying in the islands if you have 4 or more nights in Cartagena. Doing so is terrific if you have the time though!

Most of the hotels and beach clubs in the Rosario Islands are located on the largest island, appropriately named Isla Grande, or the smaller islands clustered around it like Isleta.

In fact, Isleta is where our favorite place IslaBela is located, It has lovely bungalows and one of the best beach areas in the islands.

You can also buy a day pass there (use the discount code ExploreColombia20 for a 20% discount!). Those first two photos at the very top of the post is at IslaBela’s main beach area, which I think is the best overall beach area in the Islas del Rosario.

There are a number of other places around this general area to stay as well, many of which also offer day passes.

I’m going to discuss some more ideas in the more detailed sections below but you can also take a glance at some other options on Isla Grande and the vicinity .

There are also options, including some more luxurious options in Barú. Isla Barú, or Barú Island in English, is often included as part of the Rosario Islands.

That’s sort of incorrect, as technically Barú was a peninsula that only became an island after the Spanish cut the narrow Canal del Dique across it, separating it from the mainland.

However, parts of Barú are included in the protected area of the national park and there are some gorgeous beaches here.

Perhaps the most well known of these is Playa Blanca. I have a guide to Playa Blanca , and you can click that link to read more about it.

However, due to overcrowding, I don’t recommend it anymore and I would consider it a different type (and not as nice) of an experience as what you get in the Rosario Islands.

Now, there are some less crowded beaches and a few lovely resorts near the tip of Barú that I would categorize as more like the idyllic islands.

Hotel Las Islas and the new Sofitel Calablanca offer great luxury style resorts in this area of Barú.

So does the Isla del Encanto , which we loved when we stayed there and also offers day passes. Since they are closer to the mainland, these are definitely the best choices for those looking for nicer places to stay with A/C and amenities like pools.

The way I see it there are four main ways to do the Rosario Islands. They are:

• Rent a Private Boat and See the Rosario Islands in Class – The Best Way!

• Do a Day Pass at One of the Rosario Islands Hotels
• Spend the Night at One of the Hotels in the Rosario Islands

Susana and I have done all of these.

While we have not done every single tour or been to every hotel and beach club, we have been to enough to where I feel confident our experience can help you get the most out of the Rosario Islands.

Hopefully you’ll find some tips or gleam some information here that you won’t find in the cookie cutter travel advice websites out there or the same parroted advice in Facebook groups and travel forums.

For each option mentioned above, I’m going to discuss why it’s a good way to do the Rosario Islands, give you some suggestions for the best ways to do it, and give you an idea of what to expect.

Now just to be clear, that list above should not necessarily be seen as a ranking.

Well, doing the private boat is absolutely the best way if you can swing it.

However, as I mentioned above, if you have more than 4 nights total in Cartagena, spending the night in the Islas del Rosario is totally worth it and I think you should absolutely do it!

If you only have 4 or fewer nights, I’d recommend staying in town the whole trip and doing one of options 1-3.

But, I digress.

Let’s dive into the pros and cons of each of these best ways for how to get to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena.

Option 1: Why You Should Do a Private Boat to the Rosario Islands

This is hands down the best way to do the islands!

Really and truthfully, you should try your best to figure a way to do a private boat to the Rosario Islands.

Even if you have the time and want to spend the night, do this and have them leave you where you’ll stay and get the best of all worlds.

We’ve done this a bunch of times, and it is surprisingly affordable .

Of course that’s with the catch that you do probably need to put together a group to make it cost effective.

Generally, you want a group of 7+ to get a good value here, and if you can get 15-20 people together, you can get a really nice boat for not too much per person.

In all honesty, the per person price will probably be cheaper than a day pass or shared tour.

Why is this the best way to do the Rosario Islands?

Well, you’re on your own boat, duh!

Obviousness aside, besides just being on a boat, what’s nice about doing it this way is you have a lot of flexibility.

Want to go snorkeling all day? Perfect!

Want to head to beaches where there are fewer people? You got it!

Want to do a full day booze cruise rocking your favorite jams cranked up on the stereo? No problema!

I would actually recommend doing some combination of the above.

Most rentals have a sort of preset suggested itinerary but will also let you customize the day to your liking, usually including 3 or 4 stops.

We have done private boat rentals a bunch of times with friends. During that time, we sort of settled on a nice route that has a little bit of everything.

Usually what we do is head out to the area known as La Piscinita first.

Here you can swim out and snorkel over the nearby reef.

I’ll be honest, the snorkeling in the Rosario Islands is good, not amazing.

The reefs here are unfortunately dying, but you can often see some colorful fish hanging out.

Nearby there is another good swimming and snorkeling spot where there is an underwater plane that works well as an alternative first top or a second stop.

By the way, there is a popular myth, propped up by lots of tour agencies and guides, that this plane was one that belonged to Pablo Escobar and went down in the islands while running drugs.

That is completely made up.

The plane was actually put there by a marine biologist as part of a doctoral thesis.

I had heard this was the true story a while back and went in search of evidence to be mostly frustrated at the lack of it. I did manage to track down a listing for the thesis but unfortunately the text is not published online. It is cited near the bottom of page 35 in this thesis as well.

Now, there is a variation that claims that the plane may have been owned by Escobar because the Colombian government did sink some planes used for drug trafficking off the coast that had been seized, including at least one in the Rosarios. You can read about that in this article .

However, that was 1998, 4 years after the thesis was published, so that story doesn’t add up either.

Speaking of Escobar myths and the islands, there is another older myth that Escobar had a giant mansion in the islands where he would have massive parties and live the good life.

This is also entirely false.

The supposed Escobar estate belonged (and as far as I know still does) to Antonio Turbay, cousin of a former president. At some point they built out a big, swanky hotel.

However, the hotel was shut down by the authorities due to its environmental impact and has basically become an abandoned ruin. If you want some evidence for that, this article discusses a visit by authorities to the property (known as Casa Blanca) in 2013, clearly identifying Turbay as the owner. This video also has an interview with a native of the islands that states the same.

Unfortunately, both of these myths have been perpetuated by tour guides taking some creative liberties. Then they get repeated by bloggers and youtubers. Even some larger publications like Business Insider and The Daily Mail have published articles repeating them. Even Discovery Channel did a bit on it. Ughh, you’d think maybe these outfits would do their homework, but I guess this is the brave new world we are in.

The truth is, these myths are so commonly parroted that I had to kind of go down a rabbit hole to try to disprove them, and well, now I’ve taken you down that rabbit hole too.

So please, don’t perpetuate this myth!

Ok, out of the rabbit hole and back to discussing the islands.

The plane is neat to see it in the water below. So, if it interests you, be sure to include it. The area around here is also pretty and has some neat scenery.

In fact, that is one of the things I really like about doing the private boat to the Rosario Islands. Since you get several stops, you get to see more of the islands and really enjoy the scenery.

It’s so neat seeing some of the tiny private islands that have nothing but one little house on them, all surrounded by the gorgeous waters.

Party spot Cholón is another popular spot to include as a stop on a private boat tour.

Here, you’ll find lots of other boats pulled up and a big party.

If you want to have dance parties on your boat between dips in shallow waters, it’s the perfect spot for it. We used to go here a lot and a handful of Susana’s girlfriends and gay guy friends absolutely love it. Like, if it was only up to them, we would just go here all day.

It is fun, and the truth is it is a cool little spot with the covered areas in the water that is about waist deep and all the boats pulled up around it. I always thought this would be a sweet spot for a reggae concert, although you’ll mostly hear reggaeton.

I feel like we’ve kind of outgrown it or maybe just done it too many times though. Or maybe we’ve just seen other people puking in the water one too many times.

Also, like getting here at 10 am usually leads to a day of a bit too much imbibing because well, there’s not a whole lot else to do. Just to be clear, I’ve never puked in the water!

We started coming here after stopping for swimming, staying for a while, and then heading somewhere for lunch, and actually the last time or two we did the islands we skipped it entirely, opting to just have the dance parties on the boat in a less crowded spot where we weren’t competing with other tunes.

It does get crowded during high season and weekends. Similar to Playa Blanca, I think it’s become a bit of a victim of its own success.

Also, it’s worth noting that there have been a few accidents where the mix of booze, along with lots of swimmers, boats, and jet skis in close proximity have combined for tragic consequences. So, do be extra careful swimming outside the central circle area of boats.

Just to be clear, don’t let me deter you from partying at Cholón all day! Like I said, we enjoyed it many times, and especially if you can avoid busy days, it is neat. I would suggest at least stopping by even if you’re not that interested.

Plus, another big advantage of doing the private rental is if it is too crowded or you’re not really feeling it, you can just head somewhere else!

The island known as Agua Azul is a good stop to enjoy the beach and get lunch.

We have made this our lunch spot of choice on our last few trips out to the Rosario Islands. Just make sure you double check prices for lunch as it has become a more popular stop and I’ve heard of prices going up.

Finally, you can also head to Playa Blanca for lunch and chilling in the afternoon. I would strongly recommend heading to the far end of the beach where it’s less crowded if you do though.

We used to do this a lot because it was cheaper, but with ever increasing crowds (not to mention prices), I actually generally recommend just avoiding Playa Blanca all together now.

Generally private boats will include a cooler full of ice, sometimes with some courtesy waters or beers thrown in.

Be sure to take along some water along with your booze and try to get the earliest start time you can so you can take full advantage of the day!

You’ll generally meet the boats at the marina in Manga (a short taxi ride from the Walled City), the docks by the Walled City, or at small docks in Bocagrande.

Option 2: Shared Boat Day Tours to the Rosario Islands

Ok, let’s get this out of the way to start. You should avoid like the plague the guys selling shared day tours in town on the street!

These tours are the cheapest way to do the Rosario Islands, but generally, they consist of lots of people being packed onto little boats, with lots of upsells during the day, in an experience that isn’t ideal.

In full disclosure, I’ve never actually done this standard Rosario Islands tour myself, because all I’ve heard is that it’s not worth it.

However, Susana has done it and agreed, it’s not worth it.

Besides being packed into the boat, at the first stop they had the choice of paying an additional entrance fee to enter the oceanarium or hang out on a tiny mediocre beach. There they could pay for chairs if they wanted them or they could pay more to go snorkeling.

This was how the whole day went. They did go to other, nicer places, but overall it was a lot of waiting around and a subpar experience.

So, I don’t recommend these tours. You’re so much better off just spending a bit more and doing a nicer tour.

However, there are some other good options for doing day tours that are better options than these standard, not so good tours. If you’re on a tight budget, I’d recommend skimping somewhere else and opt for either one of these tours or a day pass at a decent hotel or beach club.

However, here I’ll run down a handful of the top options I’d encourage you to consider, starting with what I think is the very best option for a shared tour on a boat to the Rosario Islands.

Best Shared Boat Tour – Sailing on a Catamaran

The Bona Vida Catamaran offers a nice day tour to the Rosario Islands that includes snorkeling gear and lunch.

In my opinion, sailing on the catamaran is the best way to do the islands in a shared boat tour.

We’ve done their sunset tour and loved it. You can read about it and see some more photos of the boat in my review .

The boat is great and has lots of space, so no worries about being crammed in or having a bumpy ride.

Plus, you get to sail and enjoy a bit of a unique way to get out of the islands and enjoy all the scenic views on the way to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena.

The only downside to choosing this tour as your way to get to the Rosario Islands is it does not stop at any beaches. So, if you need to feel some sand between your toes, you’ll want to consider one of the other shared tours mentioned below or a day pass at a hotel or beach club.

I’d definitely recommend doing this tour if you want a day trip to the islands on a boat and can’t swing the private and can live without laying on a beach. You can book ahead of time on GetYourGuide or on Viator .

Some Other Ideas for Shared Tours on Boats to the Rosario Islands

I think the catamaran is the best choice for a shared day trip , but here are some other decent options for shared tours on boats from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands. Keep in mind that there are more options for day passes at specific beaches discussed in option 3 below.

• Shared 4 Islands Tour : This is a good choice for those that want to be on a boat, see several spots in the islands, and need that fix of sandy beach. These tours stop at several stops and include lunch. They mimic the traditional standard tours but are on nicer, larger boats and with smaller groups.
• Shared Cholón Boat Party Boat : If you want the party experience at Cholón but can’t put together your own group, these shared party boats that include lunch and an open bar could be a good option and will let you have a fun time with other travelers.

Option 3: Day Pass at a Rosario Island Hotel or Beach Club

If you would prefer to spend less time on a boat and more time with your toes in a sandy beach, then doing a day pass at a beach club or resort out in the islands is another great way to do a day trip to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena.

Generally, day passes include the ride on the boat to the Rosario Islands and back, lunch, and either chairs with an umbrella or a beach bed.

Some may include a welcome drink or the option for an all inclusive package with open bar or additional snacks.

There are places that offer more relaxed atmospheres as well as more party atmospheres.

Below, I’ll go over a few of the best options for day passes out in the Rosario Islands, starting with my top recommendation at our favorite place we’ve been to in the islands.

Best Place for a Relaxed Beach Day: IslaBela

If you’re looking for a nice relaxed beach to spend the day, I suggest IslaBela.

They have a great beach area, one of the very best in the islands. It’s fairly large and there aren’t a lot of rocks. There is a bit of seaweed, but it’s not too bad, and the sand is softer to the left hand side of the beach.

The water here is good for swimming and snorkeling. I saw lots of fish by their dock. It’s also usually not as crowded as other popular beach clubs.

There are kayaks you can use, and the place is nestled up in a tiny bay that is just gorgeous (all the photos here with that blue roofed house on its own little island are from IslaBela’s main beach area).

I think they hit the right mix of having some music playing and some tasty drinks (we loved their margaritas) but also maintaining a mellow atmosphere.

I think this is without a doubt the top choice for those looking for a relaxing beach day. While there aren’t a lot of activities for little kids or indoor areas with A/C, I would consider it overall very family friendly while also being a good spot for couples and adults too.

Some Other Relaxed Beach Day Pass Spots

Here are a few more good options for a more relaxed day at the beaches in the Rosario Islands.

• Isla del Encanto : With a nice pool and gorgeous beach area, Isla del Encanto is also great for a relaxed day in the islands. We spent a couple nights here and loved it. It is also very family friendly. Book a day pass here .
• Isla del Sol : This is another good spot that has a nice pool. The beach area is decent but a bit rocky. When we went here, we were able to do a very cool tour of the mangroves nearby. Book a day pass here .
• San Pedro Majagua : We’ve never been here but their beach area looks spectacular every time we pass it on a boat.
• Gente del Mar: Another place we have not been, but they have a neat location right on a little point on Isla Grande and photos look very nice.
• Luxury Island: Another place we haven’t been. We have gone by it on boats though, and they have a large beach area on Isla Grande. It’s one of the larger beach clubs.

Check out Bora Bora Beach Club for a Party Atmosphere

Bora Bora has long been a popular spot for those looking for a hip atmosphere for a day in the Rosario Islands.

They have gorgeous beach beds, a nice area for swimming, and always have a DJ.

We have not actually ever been here, but you can read a review of Bora Bora Beach Club here by someone who has. We have gone by it on boats and seen it from a distance at IslaBela. They do have a great looking beach area and a large space.

It looks like a lot of fun. A few Colombian celebrities have even been spotted here, and it’s definitely a popular Instagram spot.

The only caveat I’d say is I have heard some people disappointed by Bora Bora.

My understanding is you have to pay extra to reserve a first row bed overlooking the beach and that there is a special VIP area that you also have to pay more for, but that isn’t always clear to people. So, is the disappointment from unrealistic expectations and not reading the fine print or is it from false advertising? I’d say it’s probably a little bit of both, and I’ve heard even more people rave that they loved it.

So, I’d just advise making sure you are clear on what is and is not included when booking so you don’t have any false expectations. Do that and you should have plenty of fun at this famous Rosario Islands beach club!

Option 4: Stay at a Hotel in the Rosario Islands

Finally, if you want to go all out and really enjoy some nice rest and relaxation on your visit, why not spend a couple nights at one of the hotels in the Rosario Islands?

Besides being able to escape and disconnect a bit, you’ll have fewer people at the beach after the day pass visitors go home.

Plus, it’s tough to beat Caribbean island sunsets!

As mentioned above, I would only suggest spending the night in the Rosario Islands if you have more than 4 nights total in Cartagena.

Keep in mind, you’re a hour plus boat ride away. So, staying in the islands means you’re relaxing in the islands and not much else. You can’t head into town for the day or for dinner or to go dancing.

I would also recommend against spending your first or last night in the islands.

While it’s possible to hire private boat transportation, it is quite pricey. So, you’re better off getting the shared boats that depart in the morning and head back in the afternoon.

Therefore, unless you have a very early arrival or very late departure, I wouldn’t risk trying to get from the airport to the islands or vice versa. It’s way to much hassle for what is supposed to be some relaxed island time!

If you have 4 nights or fewer in Cartagena, it’s best to stick to doing one of the day tour options above so you have time to see everything in town and avoid all that hassle.

However, if you have more time, read on for some options for where to spend the night in the Rosario Islands.

Luxury Options

If you’re looking for nicer resort style properties in the Rosario Islands, there are three good options.

Las Islas has gorgeous private bungalows nestled in the mangroves here on the tip of Barú offer a amazing mix of rustic luxury. It’s on the pricey side but is arguably Cartagena’s most luxurious and most unique beach resort. Check prices and availability at Las Islas here .

Isla del Encanto also makes for a nice higher end option at a bit more affordable price. They have really nice rooms in townhouse style bungalows. We really enjoyed staying here and thought the service was great, the food and drinks were very good, and the room was gorgeous. The beach area is also really large and very nice.

The new Sofitel Calablanca is also on Barú and looks very nice. It is actually probably the most like a large resort style hotel like what you would find in town. You can check prices and availability at the Sofitel Calablanca here .

Our Favorite Place (and Best Value): IslaBela

IslaBela is our favorite place in the islands and my pick for the best value for an overnight stay in the Rosario Islands.

Located on Isleta in the islands proper, not Barú, it has one of the best beach areas of any of the hotels in the islands and overlooks that gorgeous little bay.

The bungalows are very pretty and comfortable and feel very private.

They are actually located a short walk from the main beach area, and each has their own little private ocean view. While more rustic than the more luxury style resorts above, the room was still very comfortable and cozy.

A Few Other Ideas

Here are a few more idea for places to stay in the Rosario Islands.

Gente del Mar looks really good. I think they are a bit on the pricier side, but all photos of the place looks very nice.

Coralina Island has a neat area nestled up in the mangroves near IslaBela on Isleta. The only downside is there is not really a true beach here.

San Pedro de Majuagua has a gorgeous beach area, and the rooms and bungalows look very nice. I would like to stay here sometime.

Isla del Pirata basically has an island all to itself.

Finally, the fairly new and neat looking Centro Ubuntu offers a similar rustic but nice look like IslaBela.

Secreto Hostel is the best choice for those looking for dorms or more budget friendly accommodations in the Rosario Islands. El Hamaquero Hostal also has pretty favorable reviews.

Obviously, you’ll want your beach gear for the Rosario Islands. Here, I’ll also share some ideas for what to take for your trip to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena.

• I love my pair of bamboo sunglasses that fit in perfectly for a day in the Caribbean.
• Finally, you’ll want a good beach towel. These microfiber towels dry quick, making them perfect for travel. Plus they have a cool, retro look.

Practical Tips for the Islas del Rosario of Colombia

Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your trip:

• Be sure to take some cash. Some places for lunch and stuff might be able to take cards, but most still can’t. Hotels and resorts usually can but it may be worth verifying before going just to be sure. There are no ATMs in the Rosario Islands.
• The islands are 60-90 minutes away by boat and there is little real development out there. Be sure to take along any medications or other necessities you might need.
• Like most everywhere else in Cartagena, if you are buying something from a vendor on the beach or from a passing boat, be sure to negotiate and agree on price before. Remember there are no true free samples.
• There have been some accidents, especially at Cholón where lots of drinking goes on, so be sure to listen to your boat captain and watch out for other boats, doubly so if you’re doing a booze cruise.

The boat to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena can be bumpy. Usually, in the morning, it is pretty calm with minimal bouncing. However, in the afternoon sea currents often make the ride bumpy. For this reason, most boats leave the islands to return to Cartagena by 3 pm.

Are there flights to the Rosario Islands?

No. There are no public flights to the Rosario Islands from Cartagena or elsewhere.

Is there a ferry from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands?

No. There is no ferry from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands. Most people travel either on private boat rentals, shared boat tours, or boats owned by hotels and beach clubs that provide transportation.

Are there public boats from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands?

I have seen suggested elsewhere it is possible to get public boats to the Rosario Islands from the Bazurto Market or possibly from the docks by Centro.

I have not tried this, nor do I have much desire to do so to be honest, and I would not recommend it. Now, I do know there are boats to Playa Blanca and Barú from Bazurto, but again, I wouldn’t recommend doing that. They are there primarily to carry supplies and people that work on the beach. You should expect being crowded on a small boat without a clear departure time that leaves when full.

Whether you can do this out to Isla Grande as well, I’m not sure. I would think that yes, there is a way for the residents of the island to get back and forth from Cartagena, but I just don’t know enough about it to recommend trying it.

Can you sail in the Rosario Islands?

Yes. The little islands and reefs can make navigation a bit tricky if you’re sailing in Colombia , but you can certainly sail in the islands. There is not to my knowledge anywhere you can dock though, so keep that in mind.

Are the Rosario Islands safe?

Yes. The Rosario Islands are generally very safe to travel.

In the actual islands themselves, there is only a very small community of local residents, and they respect the privacy and safety of the hotels and resorts. Crime is virtually unheard of on the islands.

I would not recommend camping on the islands or walking around at night on your own due to the lack of public lighting and risk of trespassing, but you should not worry about robberies at the hotels and lodges on the islands.

The exception to this is at Playa Blanca, which I don’t consider part of the islands but some people do. Due to the large crowds and many non-native vendors, there have been robberies at Playa Blanca. If you spend the night at Playa Blanca, I’d suggest trying to keep valuables locked up, in Cartagena if possible.

The one other safety note is to be careful when swimming at crowded beaches, especially Cholón and Playa Blanca. Watch out for boats and jet skis. Also, never jump off a moving boat.

Finally, do be on the lookout for excessive charging by vendors .

This is especially the case at Cholón, Playa Blanca, Agua Azul, and from vendors on small canoes or boats selling things. Be aware there are no true free samples and be sure to always agree on price before consuming anything.

Which is the best Rosario Island to visit?

It depends.

The largest of the Rosario Islands is Isla Grande, where you’ll find most of the resorts and eco-lodges. Nearby Isleta usually is less crowded. Barú, which is technically a peninsula but often considered part of the Rosario Islands is another choice and can be reached over land and offers the well known Playa Blanca as well as some more exclusive resorts on the farther end of the peninsula.

Hi Aaron, no, it is not required, although it’s often recommended. You can actually get it at the Dadis Health Office in Cartagena or at the Bogotá airport or bus terminal for free. If you are unable to get it, I wouldn’t worry too much about it though.

Hey! Wondering what you think about going to bora bora beach club vs Cholon as a solo traveler. I’d want to party/dance and meet people.

Hi Alyssa. Hmm, I think both are good options. If you can find a shared boat to Cholon, it might be better as you’ll be going as a group on the boat where as at Bora Bora, each reservation will have its own little beach bed so maybe a tad harder to mingle. Or, see if you can put a group together for either at a hostel or something.

Best Day Trip from Cartagena: Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands are the perfect day trip from Cartagena. This archipelago is made up of 28 islands and reefs that are protected as part of the only underwater National Parks in Colombia. A short boat ride away from the city, there is plenty to do in the Rosario Islands to keep you busy. Relax by the warm Caribbean Sea, go snorkeling, and enjoy the local Colombian cuisine. There are many options to explore the Rosario Islands, I visited the Islabela private resort and it was perfect for a day of relaxing and snorkeling. Rosario Islands Day Trip

Are the rosario islands worth visiting.

Absolutely, yes. The Rosario Islands are worth visiting even if you only have a day or two in Cartagena. It was easily the highlight of my time in Cartagena and one of the most memorable destinations on my vacation in Colombia. I highly recommend at least a day trip to the Rosario Islands. If you have time in your itinerary it would also be worth staying a couple of nights in the Rosario Islands.

Private Resort vs Playa Blanca on Baru

I knew that a visit to the Rosario Islands was a must while in Cartagena . When I first started looking at how to visit the Rosario Islands, Playa Blanca came up a lot as the classic recommendation.

Playa Blanca certainly looks like a beautiful beach. However, because of its popularity, it also has a reputation for becoming crowded and having a lot of vendors. I wanted to snorkel and swim and Playa Blanca didn’t seem like a good option for either as I would have nowhere to safely store my belongings while swimming. Because of this, I started looking at day trips from Cartagena to the Rosario Islands where snorkeling was an option. The only two options I could come up with were to visit a resort on the islands or to take a catamaran tour.

On a future trip, I would love to take this catamaran tour as it visits several locations and has a couple of options for snorkeling. However, I’m quite happy I went to a private resort as it was great to be on the beach and the snorkeling location nearby was absolutely fantastic.

Book Your Day Trip From Cartagena In Advance

I highly recommend booking your tour to the Rosario Islands in advance. Most importantly because they do sell out, especially if you are going to a resort. Secondly, while walking around Cartagena you will be bombarded with advertisements and vendors trying to sell you on a Rosario Islands trip. It’s nice to have it already booked so you aren’t distracted while trying to enjoy Cartagena.

Choosing Which Rosario Islands Resort to Visit

There are many options to choose from when picking a resort in the Rosario Islands. The packages tend to include the same things, transportation, lunch, access to kayaks, and options to snorkel for an extra fee. I ended up picking Islabela as the vibe for this one seemed to be very relaxed and chill. If you are looking for more of a party vibe, then Bora Bora Beach Club could be a good option as they have a DJ on the beach.

Getting to the Rosario Islands

The only way to visit Islabela is by boat. Luckily, the boat docks in Cartagena are just a short walk outside of the city walls. At the docks, you need to walk all the way down to the furthest end at Dock 1 to find the boat for Islabela. You do need to pay a port fee in cash only to get admitted to the dock area. At the time of writing, the fee was 20,000 pesos each.

Because of having to travel over open water, the boat schedule is quite strict and you do have to arrive early. I arrived at the dock at 7:30 am to sign in and the boat left at about 8:30 am. The boat ride to Islabela took 1 hour. It was quite a calm trip to the island (spoiler: it won’t be on the way back!).

Arriving to Islabela

On arrival to Islabela, you are greeted with a coconut-pineapple juice and shown your assigned lounger. The lounger was really nice and I was lucky enough to have one that was right in front of the water. I was really pleased by the assigned lounger and that it was shaded as I honestly did not realize that was included. Only the welcome drink and lunch are included but it is easy to order extra drinks and snacks.

The swimming area is really nice. There are quite a few photo opportunities they have set up here including a staircase above the water and a photo frame. The water is so nice and calm and warm and perfect for relaxing in.

Snorkeling in the Rosario Islands

After some swimming, they do a call to see if anyone wants to go snorkeling. You should definitely say yes to this. The snorkeling trip did cost extra, at the time I visited it was 50,000 pesos per person. Anything extra can be paid by credit card so you don’t have to have cash on you. It was well worth the extra cost.

The snorkeling trip will take you on a short boat ride to the reef near Isla Grande where you will have plenty of time to snorkel. The guide was fantastic, diving down to show us interesting fish and crabs. After spending a decent amount of time snorkeling over the reef, it’s back in the boat. I thought this would be the end of snorkeling but after pointing out Pablo Escobar’s now abandoned island mansion we stopped for one quick snorkel. Not far from this mansion is a sunken former drug-running plane. You get to snorkel over it and you can dive down to it if you feel like it. This plane was intentionally sunk by the Colombian government after it was seized from Escobar. A very unique spot to snorkel and something that was totally unexpected to me on this excursion.

My only regret with snorkeling here was not having an underwater camera.

Lunch at Islabela

After snorkeling, it will be time for lunch. Lunch is included with your ticket and when you signed in this morning you should have picked a meal type. The vegetarian option was iced tea and buttered noodles with vegetables, which was good, but I was jealous of the plantains I saw other people have. The seafood option looked really good, snapper with coconut rice, plantains, and a salad. This seems to be quite a traditional Colombian meal for the Caribbean Coast. After lunch, there should be some time to relax and swim in the water before heading back to Cartagena.

Returning back to Cartagena From the Rosario Islands

The boats departing from the Rosario Islands to Cartagena have to head back fairly early as the water starts to get very choppy. It’s bad enough that I was warned by the manager at the hotel that the ride home would be rough. Indeed, we left by 3 pm and at some points, the boat felt more like a rollercoaster as it went over quite large waves.

After a great day trip to the Rosario Islands, you should be back in Cartagena with time to explore the city a bit and head off to dinner. Even though you can visit the Rosario Islands as a day trip, if your schedule permits it, you can stay for a night or two. You can also stay there overnight at Islabela in one of the rooms or charming seafront bungalows if you want a bit more time to relax and explore the area.

Hi Brianna, I realized that you posted this like a year ago and we are now January 2024 but because I get sea sick easily I would like to ask you how was the snorkeling? Was it rough when you went in the morning? Also, which company did you used. We are in Medellín right now and will be in Cartagena after Bogotá and Salento. I thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Francine, in regards to sea sickness I found the boat to the Rosario Islands in the morning was quite calm. In the afternoon, returning to Cartagena is extremely rough, and my understanding is that it is the typical experience. For snorkeling, the boat used for that was also on very calm waters and the boat ride wasn’t very long. I went to Islabela Resort, which I have linked in the article above, and snorkeling was available from the resort. You don’t have to book the snorkeling in advance as you can just join the tour when you get to the resort and pay when you leave. Enjoy your time in Colombia!

What island and where you would recommend a family with kids going? We are adventurous but also love beautiful water, beaches, and relaxing!

Hi Christa, I would recommend the island I went to, Islabela, as suitable for kids. The beach here isn’t really a sandy beach as there is broken coral in it so I would also recommend watershoes for swimming here. The sandy beaches that are closer to Cartagena, like Isla Baru, I wouldn’t really recommend because of the amount of harassment you will get from vendors.

About the Rosario Islands

While some of the restrictions from it being a national park limit some activity, don’t be fooled thinking it’s difficult to visit! When to visit the rosario islands.

Cartagena and the Rosario Islands are located in the northeast corner of Colombia right on the Caribbean sea. Its location allows it to have a rather moderate, tropical climate year-round. Which is great because it allows you to enjoy the sun and sand no matter what time of year you visit! While there are some months that have slightly more rain than others, you’re almost guaranteed to have wonderful weather at any time you choose to visit Cartagena and the islands. 

The average temperature in Cartagena is between 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit with lows in the 70s at night. The temperature is just about perfect but don’t forget about the humidity. The average humidity is about 1 billion %. Okay, I exaggerate… But not much! Humidity ranges between 70-80% throughout the year with *slightly* lower humidity levels in the drier months. The summer tends to be a bit more rainy but only 11 days of rain on average. We visited in June and experienced short afternoon thunderstorms but that was pretty much all!

Because of the beautiful weather and scenic islands, the Rosario Islands are pretty busy all year. Tourists flock to the islands to escape winter or enjoy themselves while on summer vacation. But have no fear… you’re sure to enjoy it even with some crowds! There are plenty of islands to choose from 😉

How long to visit the Rosario Islands

When visiting the Rosario Islands, you may wonder how long is enough time to visit? Well, there are over 20 different islands so if you want to hit every one…… like a month?! Obviously, that isn’t an option for everyone so what’s a more realistic amount of time?

If you are coming to Cartagena for just a quick long weekend or on the heels of a longer trip around Colombia, you may only have one day to explore the islands. One day is the perfect amount of time to see the beautiful area and explore 2-3 different islands on a day trip. This is how we explored the Rosario Islands and I’m happy with that amount of time given that we were on the end of a 2 week trip. 

If you have a full week in Cartagena, I recommend taking 3-4 days to stay within Cartagena and then using 3 days to soak in the island paradise! Check into a resort and let your worries wash away into the Caribbean. 

Here are some resorts to check out if you want to stay on the Rosario Islands:

Luckily, visiting the Rosario Islands for a day trip is relatively easy! Due to their proximity to Cartagena and undeniable beauty, there’s no shortage of tour companies ready to whisk you away to island paradise. You can either book a private tour ($$$) or a group tour. 

You can also DIY a day trip to the Rosario Islands! There is a bridge connecting the mainland of Cartagena to Isla Barú. Ubers or taxis will drive you about an hour outside of Cartagena, over the bridge, and down an unpaved, bumpy road to bring you right to the popular Playa Blanca. If you choose this open, bring cash and arrange your ride back to the city before you leave. There’s no cell service at Playa Blanca so you can’t easily call an Uber. 

We selected to take a day tour and enjoyed hopping on a boat and seeing 3 different islands within the Rosario chain. If you want a similar experience, keep reading to see what you can expect!

What to expect

Many day tours operate in the Rosario Islands giving tourists a way to see some of the best all in one day. Most of the tours meet at or near the Parque Centenario, which is a small park in between the walled city and Getsemani. It’s also where the docks are so you can meet your group and hop on the boat! Most of the tours leave early so don’t forget to set your alarm! You’ll often select a lunch choice, grab a bottle of water, and be off. 

The ride from Cartagena to the islands is between 45-60 minutes. You’ll get to see the big buildings and hotels of Bocagrande before getting near the Fuerte de San Fernando Bocachica. This is an old military fort built by the Spanish in the 17th century. Most day tours don’t stop here, but you can specifically search for a tour that will if you’re into history. 

The ride is pretty easy on the way out and you’ll get to see many of the different islands and boats along the way. The tours stop at some similar islands–usually two of the most popular and then a smaller, quieter island. Below, you can read about some of the bigger stops the tours will take.

Cholon Island

Many day tours will make a stop at Cholon Island and once you get here, you’ll see why. It’s truly unique in that there are tons of palapas or cabanas set up IN the water. People are surrounding tables in and out of shade while standing in waist deep, warm, Caribbean water. Cholon Island is known as “party island” and it is easy to see why. There are waiters coming up to your table to offer you beverages, vendors floating around with oysters and other foods on kayaks, and music blaring to get you in the party vibe. It is certainly a special vibe but jump in and enjoy it. I recommend getting a huge drink in a pineapple… what’s more tropical than that?!

Isla Grande

Isla Baru is one of the more popular islands for a stop during a day tour because it is where many people snorkel! It’s located within the Corales Islas del Rosario which, you guessed it, is where much of the coral is. You’ll stop off the coast of the island and hop in. To be honest, the coral was a little disappointing. It’s not quite as bleached as some other parts of the world I’ve seen, but because of the lax laws regarding wakes and boating, it gets a lot of traffic. The fish weren’t extremely varied and the coral reef area is pretty small. Be very, very careful because as I mentioned, the boating laws are a bit lax, so you’ll have boats coming by closer than you are comfortable with. 

After snorkeling, you’ll take a quick boat ride to Isla Grande, where there are numerous resorts. The day tour operators have agreements with the resorts that allow you to relax on the beach and sidle up to the bar for a tropical drink for a few hours! This was my favorite stop–much quieter and calmer than our other stops!

Playa Blanca

Another popular option, many tours stop here to enjoy lunch and the beach. In addition, you may see people who have come directly here just to spend the day! It’s easily the most popular beach (and said to be one of the most beautiful… not sure I agree) because it can be reached by both boat and car. There’s a bridge connecting Isla Barú to the mainland, so tourists will just drive over to spend the day on the beach. If you want a quiet, secluded beach day… this isn’t it. Don’t get me wrong: the beach is beautiful and the water warm, but it’s crowded with tourists and vendors trying to sell you stuff. Just be warned! 

Alternatively, you can pick tours that will go to just one resort or island and hang there for the day. There are dedicated Cholon Island trips if you want to party, Playa Blanca trips if you want to be in the action, or trips to just a resort to hang out and sip coladas in a beach chair all afternoon!

What to pack for the Rosario Islands

You’re island hopping, so think tropical vacay! Don’t forget your swimsuit , obviously. You may want a cover up to wear if your shoulders get too much sun or to wear while you’re eating lunch. Pack easy slip-on flip flops to wear walking around the islands. While the sand is soft, some of the islands have a lot of brush and trees with roots sticking out. There’s also a big party vibe in the islands and I’ve seen glass on a couple of the islands we stopped at! Don’t forget sunscreen and a big hat to protect your face, as well as sunglasses . You may want to pack a small backpack for towels, a change of clothes, and extra water, like we did. We also liked being able to tuck our phones away in the back pack as well. 

A quick note: keep a close eye on your stuff when you’re on the islands. We sat our backpack on a beach chair and Michael was keeping a close eye on it (luckily). A group of guys came right in front of our chairs and blocked our view with a huge banner advertising a DJ or something and another guy definitely tried to rummage through our stuff. I’ve never seen Michael run out of the ocean so fast! With a few drinks and large crowds, thieves can be very opportunistic.

Final thoughts/recommendations on a Rosario Island Day Trip

The Rosario Islands are a MUST SEE when you are visiting Cartagena , Colombia. Whether you want to relax for a few days or only have time for a quick day trip , seeing the islands is something you won’t want to miss. There are several different islands and each has a different vibe–you just have to find what you’re looking for! There are several tour companies that offer day trips to the Rosario Islands that offer just partying, snorkeling, relaxing, or a mix of all of the above! When you visit the islands, there is certainly something for everyone. No matter why you go, you’ll love the soft white sand and clear blue water! You can stay at a resort for a couple of days or just take a quick Rosario Island day trip. You deserve at least a day in island paradise while visiting the beautiful city of Cartagena.

How to swim, snorkel, and eat your way through colombia's rosario islands.

C artagena, on Colombia’s northern coast, is one of South America’s loveliest cities and Colombia’s most-visited location. So you, too, may find yourself in this special city. However, after a few days, you may want an escape from the heat and crowds. That’s a perfect opportunity to head to the Rosario Islands, a rustic national park surrounded by the pale blue Carribean Sea. We recommend spending at least one night there to really savor the islands’ more relaxed pace of life.

Getting to the Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands are a protected archipelago of 28 islands located about 25 miles off the shore from Cartagena. In 1988, the Colombian Government declared the Rosario Islands a national park to preserve the coral reefs, seagrasses, mangroves, and great biodiversity of these islands, which has also turned them into a destination in their own right.

Access from Cartagena is an easy 45-minute boat ride from the town’s main dock, La Bodeguita. After leaving sweaty, busy Cartagena, you’ll find the islands’ cerulean waters and sea breeze a welcome change. If you’re pressed for time, a day trip is an opportunity to see the islands, but be warned that guided tours follow the same path, stopping at beaches with vendors hawking goods and working to upsell you. If you’re looking for peace and tranquility, skip the day trip and opt to stay at least one night, and preferably three.

For accommodations, book early. The Rosario Islands are not one of those places where you can just show up and book a room upon arrival. Cheap lodging fills up quickly, so plan accordingly. In terms of hostels, Casa Lola Eco Hostel on Isla Grande ranks highest online. Off Isla Grande, many eco-hotels and lodges are also located on Isla Marina.

If you’re with a group of friends or have some money to spend, Airbnb is definitely the way to go. You can get a sprawling place for a little over $100 per night with meals included, like La Reina Mora on Isla Marina. This semi-private home sleeps 12 comfortably with two on-site caretakers to cook your meals and make any other arrangements you need.

This archipelago and national park are, unsurprisingly, quite rustic. Power goes out regularly or is limited to the evening, even in some of the nicer accommodations. WiFi is also limited, but service is available with a Colombian SIM card. As frustrating as this may be at first, it’s the perfect chance to relax and enjoy some time unplugged . You can post to the ‘gram and respond to emails when you’re back in Cartagena in a few days’ time.

Also, note that when it comes to buying sundries like beer and snacks, the Rosario Islands are more expensive than shops in Cartagena. Bring your own booze, sunscreen, and anything else you’ll need for the trip with you, along with plenty of cash — ATMs can be hard to come by on Isla Grande, and even when you do find them, they may have run out of money.

Eat as much seafood as possible

The Rosario Islands are rich with mariscos — or seafood — like fresh fish, lobster, crab, octopus, and shrimp. You’ll see a lot of pescado de temporada , fish of the day, which is usually a white fish like dorado , or mahi-mahi. Seafood is prepared simply here, grilled or lightly fried, with coconut rice, fried starchy plantains, and a few wedges of lime for an acidic bite. Keep an eye out for fishermen going dock to dock, as they’ll be selling freshly caught lobsters, crab, or octopus.

Getting out on the water

Paddleboards and kayaks are widely available to rent at accommodations throughout the islands. Get your abs and arms workouts in as you spend a relaxing afternoon seeing the islands. Meander through the intertidal mangrove forests of Isla Grande, and be sure to spend an evening watching the sunset from your kayak. Beach access is easily available across Isla Grande, and you’ll see people prepping gear at the popular spots to push out from the shore throughout the day.

Some good news for those on a budget or who aren’t certified: Snorkeling is actually better than diving in the Rosarios. The islands’ more than 1,300 species of marine animals and plants are best viewed underwater, from above, and much can generally be seen near shore.

The reviews for diving in the Rosario Islands are iffy at best, as much of the coral reef is in poor condition. Snorkeling is comparatively cheap and overall a better option. Snorkel solo along the coastline of the small islands to see colorful shellfish, reef fish, and sea crabs, or book a snorkeling tour through your accommodation for a more orchestrated experience with lunch included.

Whatever you do, make sure you don’t further stress the coral when you snorkel. Make sure that neither you nor your fins touches the coral. Never stand on coral. Also, don’t block the path of sea creatures as they swim.

Seeing the marine life

On San Martin de Pajarales, the Oceanarium offers an easy walk through much of the islands’ ocean life. Many of the varieties of fish that populate the reefs and waters throughout the national park can be found here, along with larger sea life like sea turtles, dolphins, and sharks.

Isla Grande has a swimming hole known as the Laguna Encantada, or Enchanted Lagoon, where you can swim with bioluminescent plankton. A bit of an unofficial sightseeing spot, the best way to find the lagoon is to ask about it at your accommodation.

Touring the park beyond Isla Grande

Isla Grande is the heart of the park and where most development has occurred. But it’s hardly the only island worth seeing. Hiring a boat tour allows you to visit smaller islands including Isla del Pirata, or Pirate’s Island. The island is named as such because it was a hub for regional pirates, though unlike what its name suggests, it is one of the more relaxing spots in the park and ideal for kids. There’s little infrastructure, but what’s there is built to accommodate families who want to get into the water for a snorkel or spend some time on the sand.

Viator offers daily tours that give you the option of posting up on Isla del Pirata with a quick stop on San Martin de Pajarales to visit the aquarium or doing a three-island tour that heads to Barú, Cholon, and includes time at Playa Blanca, the whitest of white-sand beaches in the region.

Visitors to Cartagena, Colombia may find themselves seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of the vibrant city. For the discerning traveler, the beaches of Cartagena leave something to be desired. Those looking for turquoise waters, lush mangroves, and white sand beaches can head to the nearby Rosario Islands, or Islas del Rosario, a beautiful archipelago of 28 islands. Not sure how to get there or even what to do once you arrive? Keep reading. TN ‘s guide to Colombia’s Rosario Islands will help you plan your ideal getaway!

1. How To Get To The Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands are located southwest of Cartagena, just a short 45 to 60-minute boat ride from the city. Some of the islands have hotels in which you may opt to stay overnight. However, many people simply visit for the day, via a group or private boat ride.

There are many tour companies offering group day trips that visit several of the islands and include lunch and drinks. This is, of course, a more affordable option than booking private transport.

Even if you don’t decide to stay overnight, you can still enjoy the activities and amenities hotels offer by booking a day pass. Some tour companies, such as Juan Bellena , offer packages that include property access for the day, transportation, a welcome drink, and lunch altogether.

2. What To Do In The Rosario Islands

Visitors to the Rosario Islands can enjoy a variety of fun and exciting activities. Having been declared a national park to preserve the amazing reefs and ecosystem home to a variety of marine life, the islands offer great opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling.

The Oceanarium is a marine aquarium and conservation center housing over 1,400 animals from 140 different local marine species . It offers dolphin shows and other exciting experiences with animals like turtles and sharks.

Like San Basilio de Palenque, the  Rosario Island of Barú was one of the places enslaved Afro-Colombians escaped to. Today it is still home to this community of Black Colombians. You can tour the town of Santa Ana to learn more about their culture and history.

Be sure to spend some time out on the water swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding, or just simply sunbathe on the beach and enjoy the tropical breeze and warm temperatures.

Relaxing, serene vibes can be found at places like the Coralina Island, Gente del Mar, and Isla Del Encanto.

Those looking for the turn up can visit Isla Cholón, where boats full of tourists and locals alike gather for some of the best day parties in the islands. There are also numerous beach clubs, such as Bora Bora, Rosario Beach Club, and Pao Pao, offering fresh seafood, great drinks, and music by the area’s top DJs.

3. Things To Know Before You Go

• From around December to April, it can get quite windy, making the waters choppy and rough. Returning to the mainland in the afternoon, you could be in for a very bumpy boat ride. If you’re visiting on a day trip, your captain may require an early return depending on weather conditions.
• There are no ATMs in the Rosario Islands, so be sure to have cash on hand.
• On some of the larger islands, you’ll encounter a lot of vendors approaching you selling everything from live lobsters to jewelry. They can be quite persistent. Do not accept their “free” samples unless you are planning to make a purchase.
• If planning to stay overnight in a hotel, book early. Accommodations fill up quickly and there may not be much available at the last minute.
• If possible, avoid visiting the Rosario Islands on weekends and Colombian holidays, as it tends to get quite crowded.

4. Where To Stay In The Rosario Islands

Wondering where to book your overnight accommodations? These are some of the best hotels in the Rosario Islands:

• Hotel Las Islas (Isla Barú) – This hotel offers a private beach, swimming pool, hot tub, fitness center, bar, and garden. Free Wi-Fi is available and guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast. Hotel Las Islas also offers an ATM and currency exchange exclusively for guests.
• Hotel IslaBela (Isla Grande) – This rustic eco-hotel offers bungalows, a private beach, a restaurant, bar, garden, free Wi-Fi, and room service. Guests can opt for a continental or à la carte breakfast.
• Hotel Playa Manglares (Isla Barú) – This eco-lodge is located on Barbacoa Beach and just a 10-minute drive from Playa Blanca. It has a private beach and restaurant, and offers guests hammocks, open terraces, free Wi-Fi, and a variety of excursions. Breakfast is served daily and includes regional tropical fruits.
• Coralina Island (Isla Marina) – Coralina Island has its own private beach, restaurant, and solarium. Three free meals are available for guests, with additional gourmet dishes available. Snorkeling, diving, boat tours, and additional activities can be arranged by the hotel.

Upon arriving in Cartagena , you’ll immediately notice the heat and the humidity…and you’ll want to cool off in the water ASAP. Luckily, just off the coast of Cartagena are the stunning Rosario Islands, which you can easily reach by boat.

In this guide, I’ll share how to get to the Rosario Islands, things to do there, and other trip planning information. I’ll also summarize my experience taking a Rosario Islands day trip from Cartagena to give you an idea of what to expect! Rosario Islands Information and History

The Rosario Islands are an archipelago of 28 islands off the coast of Cartagena. The islands have been designated as a National Park, granting protection to their coral reefs. You can reach the Islands’s crystal clear waters and lively beach bars in a short boat ride from Cartagena. 

Among the Rosario Islands you’ll find one of Pablo Escobar’s extravagant mansions, today abandoned and overrun by vegetation and wild animals. The area also contains sunken planes that were once used by drug traffickers, making for unique snorkeling opportunities. Even today, treasure remains buried under the water! The Colombian government recently made plans to recover a Spanish galleon that sank in 1708 and contains up to $20 billion worth of gold, silver, and emeralds.

My Experience Visiting the Rosario Islands from Cartagena

Isla grande.

On my third day in Cartagena , I took a tour of the Rosario Islands. We departed from the harbor in the city’s historic center, watching the water become increasingly crystalline blue as we ventured further from Cartagena. We cruised past tiny islands whose entire surfaces were covered by houses; it was interesting to imagine what island life might be like. 

Our first stop was for snorkeling at Isla Grande. While the visibility was excellent and the water pleasantly warm, I was disappointed to find that much of the coral was lifeless, and marine activity was sparse. We spent some time lounging on the beach at Isla Grande before heading to our next stop, Isla ​​Cholón.

Isla ​​Cholón

Isla ​​Cholón in the Rosario Islands is kno wn as a party island. Here’s why: music is blasting, tables have been built into the water, and talented servers float food and drink orders over to guests. Although this wasn’t quite my vibe since I’m not a big drinker, I appreciated the unique concept!

There was a delay when we tried to leave Cholón; vendors boarded the boat and wouldn’t let us take off until everyone paid their bills. There was a heated exchange between the vendors and a large group of American tourists. It was unclear whether the tourists had been overcharged or if they were too drunk to remember what they ordered.

Playa Blanca

Our final stop was for a late lunch at a restaurant on Playa Blanca. I joined some other day trip guests at a table in the sand, but unfortunately the local vendors were relentless. Aggressive vendors constantly attacked our table, trying to sell everything from crafts to massages. Tip: if a vendor offers you a “sample” (e.g., trial massage), politely decline to avoid potential disputes about payment later on.

After leaving Playa Blanca, we made our way back to Cartagena. During this time I chatted with the other guests about their Colombia travel plans. The Rosario Islands tour I took mostly consisted of foreigners, and I even met two people from my hometown in California! The boat was filled with many couples, and a very kind gay man told me that I was “way too cute to be traveling alone” and asked if I got a lot of attention. 

Although I know this was meant as a compliment, it exaggerated the loneliness I often feel as a solo female traveler. It didn’t help that I already felt uneasy in Cartagena’s romantic atmosphere, which seemed to attract many couples seeking romantic getaways. 

At this stage, I was only two weeks into my year-long backpacking journey and had yet to fully embrace the virtues of solo travel. Over the course of a year, I’ll document how my experiences shaped me into a self-reliant and empowered female traveler.

Rosario Islands Trip Planning Information

How to get to rosario islands.

To get to the Rosario Islands, you’ll need to buy a tour. There is no public transportation to the islands. It takes 45-60 min to get to the Rosario Islands by boat, and they leave from the harbor next to Cartagena’s historic center. Most boats depart in the morning and return in the late afternoon. You can reserve tours online or buy them in person.

Rosario Islands Things to Do

Rosario Islands day trips typically offer activities such as snorkeling, visiting a beach bar, lunch at a beachfront restaurant, and kayaking. When buying a tour, ask exactly what it includes (meals, drinks, Rosario Islands entrance fee, snorkeling equipment, etc). Also confirm the itinerary and stops. Below I’ve listed some of the most common Rosario Islands tours so that you can decide which one is best for you!

Full Day Tour of the Rosario Islands

This is the tour option I chose. Itineraries usually start in Isla Grande for snorkeling and beach time. The second stop is typically Isla Cholón, an island with a party vibe; think lively music and shaded tables built into the water. The last stop is usually Playa Blanca, a large white sand beach where the included lunch is served. At each destination there is food and drink available for purchase. The tour operators will encourage you to purchase something, but this is not obligatory.

Rosario Islands Resorts or Beach Lounges

For a more relaxed experience, spend a full day at one of the Rosario Islands beach lounges. This option will minimize the time you spend in transit, allowing you to enjoy more time snorkeling, kayaking, or relaxing on the beach.  These tours typically include a day pass to one of the Rosario Islands resorts, often on Islabela or Isla Grande. Stay Overnight on the Rosario Islands

If you’d like more time to enjoy the tranquility of the Rosario Islands, stay overnight (see accommodation recommendations below). Check with your accommodation on how to get there and how much the transportation should cost.

Private Charter Boat

If you’re traveling in a group, renting a private charter boat is a great way to explore the Rosario Islands. The price may actually come out cheaper than if you were to buy tickets individually.

When visiting the Rosario Islands by private charter boat, you can customize your itinerary to avoid peak times at some of the typical spots, which can get crowded. You’ll also be able to go where you please and check out some hidden spots. If I had this option, I would have asked to go to one of the sunken drug trafficking planes for snorkeling!

Scuba Diving in the Rosario Islands

Although it’s possible to go scuba diving in the Rosario Islands, I’m not sure if I would recommend it. While snorkeling at the Rosario Island reef, I noticed that almost all of the corals were dead and there wasn’t much marine life. However if you’re a beginner and want to get certified or try diving for the first time, the Rosario Islands may be a good place for you. Courses are affordable, visibility is good, and the water is calm and warm.

How Long to Stay

You can see the highlights of the islands in a full day trip from Cartagena. Stay overnight to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and for more time to enjoy the beach and pristine waters.

Rosario Islands Weather and When to Go

The Rosario Islands are hot and humid year round, both day and night. The Caribbean sun is strong; pick a boat tour with adequate shade and bring sun protection. 

December to April is the dry season. Although I went in the rainy season (August) I got lucky with no rain! 

Playa Blanca may get crowded on weekends and local holidays.

Rosario Islands Hotels and Where to Stay

If you’re planning an overnight Rosario Islands vacation, here are the places I’d recommend staying. Most properties will be located on Isla Grande.

Budget: Eco-Camping El Frutal . Rent affordable furnished tents. Secreto Hostel . Offers dormitories and beautiful common areas.

Mid-range: Isla Grande Eco-Hostal . Choose from a variety of private rooms. Hotel Islabela Islas Del Rosario . Rent a bungalow with access to a private beach.

Luxury: Bora Bora Beach Club . Enjoy spacious rooms, waterfront cabanas and a luxurious lounge area.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you’re taking a day tour to the Rosario Islands, there will be opportunities to purchase food and drinks at each stop. Many tours will include soft drinks and a fresh local fruit juice. Some tours serve lunch very late (at the last stop).

If you’re staying overnight on the Rosario Islands, you’ll have limited restaurants to choose from, which serve mostly local food. There are no grocery stores on the islands.

Are the Rosario Islands Safe?

The Rosario islands are very safe to visit and far from any urban centers with crime. 

At Playa Blanca, the vendors can be quite aggressive. Just firmly decline their offers and don’t allow them to give you any “gifts” or “samples”. On our tour, massage vendors approached our table at lunch and insisted on giving us demos. Check out my  Colombia safety guide  for more tips, and make sure you have travel insurance .

Budget and Money

There are no ATMs on the Rosario Islands. Bring enough cash to cover the tour, tip for your guides, and any drinks, food, or souvenirs you might want to buy. Keep in mind that prices are on the higher end due to the touristic nature of this place.

What to Bring to the Rosario Islands

For a full list of what to bring, refer to my Colombia packing list . I would stress the following:

• Lightweight towel
• Motion sickness medication . I found the boat ride to be very smooth, but conditions may vary day by day.
• Light, breathable clothing. Protect your skin from the strong Caribbean sun!
• Don’t take many valuables with you, since you’ll leave them on the boat when you go to swim. For peace of mind, keep your valuables in a dry bag that you take into the water with you.
• Snacks. Sometimes lunch is served very late on the tours. While food is available for purchase at earlier stops, it may be overpriced.

Day Trip from Cartagena: Beautiful Rosario Islands Boat Tour

When I spent a week in Cartagena , I got to go on a Rosario Islands boat tour! The views were amazing, and I definitely recommend getting out on the water while you’re in Cartagena. And you can make a whole day of it and grab some lunch and drinks while you’re out!

Rosario Islands boat tour

The boat tour I was on was put together by Scarlet Macaw Trips, but there are lots of different Rosario Islands boat tour options you can choose from. I have heard some mixed reviews about taking public boat tours , so definitely do your research before you book a tour.

It’s about an hour boat ride to get to the islands, and then you can easily hop from island to island.

The Rosario Islands are an archipelago made up of 28 islands that are part of a national park along the Colombian Caribbean coast. Since they’re in a national park that helps protect a coral reef, they are well-preserved.

You can go snorkeling or scuba diving in the area if you want, or you can just relax on the water and take in the sights like I did! I couldn’t get over how bright and beautiful the water was everywhere.

You can ride by Pablo Escobar’s mansion ! It was a secret party house, and it’s now government owned and has fallen into ruin since it was abandoned.

Places to stop around the Rosario Islands

There are spots where you can drop anchor and go swimming off the side of the boat! There were lots of men in kayaks selling fresh coconuts so you could drink right out of the coconut. They were pretty persistent, so you have to be firm if you don’t want any and if you do, you can haggle prices with them. The group I was with got a few to try, and they were pretty good!

We stopped at an island for lunch and drinks, and it was great! The fish was very fresh, and coconut rice has become one of my new favorite things. And drinking out of a pineapple is always fantastic.

There were people there trying to sell us things or have us buy massages, so again, if you’re not interested, you have to be firm. There were several times when people would come up and just start massaging someone to see if they would pay for it, just to give you a head’s up!

So if you’re looking for a day trip from Cartagena, you can’t miss going on a Rosario Islands boat tour! It’s such a beautiful area to explore and a great way to spend a relaxing day on the water.

The Rosario Islands are integrated by 28 islands, all of them form a national park created to protect one of the most important coral reefs in the Colombian Caribbean Coast. Only three of these islands are property of the Colombian state. Before establishing the national park in 1977, wealthy families used this natural paradise to build their summer houses, but then government allowed them to keep their properties, only if they paid annual rent and taxes to be there, and complied with certain rules to preserve the ecosystem of the islands.

How to get to the Rosario Islands:

It will take you about 45 minutes to get to the Rosario Islands. There are diverse resorts and hotels that offer you the option of spending the day and take advantage of their premises. The prices vary according to which you choose. Most of them are located at Isla Grande, the bigger island of the park and the only one -between the 27, with native population. Once you are there, it is worth doing at least an hour of snorkeling by the near islands to appreciate the incredible coral formations and the shoals common of the area.

If you travel with kids to Cartagena, you can opt for the Oceanarium at the San Martin de Pajares Island. Both activities are easy to set once you are there and talk to islanders, or ask at the resort or the hotel. If you decide to skip any or both of these, you can surely spend your day enjoying the natural landscaping, beaches, and swimming in the clear waters where you can still see the coral formation that made of this an ecosystem unique in the world.

Other ways to get around the Rosario Islands

You can get to Rosario Islands if you take a scuba diving mini course or a certificated from Cartagena. The Playa Blanca tour by boat offers you a brief panoramic tour around the Rosario Islands before getting to the Oceanarium where you can make one hour stop. If you plan to spend a few days inside the Rosario Islands, in Islan Grande, which is where most of the accommodations are located, you can book your one way trip here. You can also rent a private boat or yacht, to go island hopping with your travel buddies on your own time!

The plus side of this option, besides being able to choose from different boats and prices, is that you will have the opportunity to visit beautiful hidden islands.

Recommendations

- Do not forget your sunscreen protector, and if you decide to explore the Isla Grande surrounding, bring also the mosquitos repellent with you. - Do not throw any garbage in the Island, and please bring any leftovers or residues back to city. - In general, the boat trip from the port takes around 45 minutes. We recommend you to schedule prior reservations with registered agencies; many times, tourists book their tickets with street vendors just to save few bucks, and they get a totally different thing of what they were offered; the worst, is that you cannot not really ensure a place where to even make a complaint about this, and you go back home with an unpleasant experience that will spot your vacations

NOTE: Not all street vendors perform with a bad heart, it is only a few that damage the image, and create a fear among visitors - If you decide to book in one of resorts at Isla Grande, or stay overnight, take a time to walk to the town of Orica located at the middle of the island, to see by first hand the kindness of the native population

- Take some time to do ecotourism, and get a canoe ride to see the beautiful mangroves tunnels, or go to the enchanted lagoon, a vert quiet and tranquil place. - If you spend the night, and have the budget, then you should really consider going to the enchanted lagoon at night to see the stunning plankton (only visible if there is not full moon)

Colombian Paradise: 14 Travel Tips for Visiting the Rosario Islands with Kids

The Rosario Islands are famous for their pristine waters, coral reefs, and some beautiful beaches in a more secluded and relaxed atmosphere away from all the noise and hustle of mainland Colombia. They are easy to get to from Cartagena but feel a world away. People come for the day, or for a few days to relax, explore and reset.

Here are our best travel tips for enjoying the Rosario Islands with kids- everything we wish we’d known before we visited these beautiful islands!

We spent four days on Isla Grande as part of our Family Year Out when our kids were 4 and 7. After spending three weeks in Colombia , this was our last stop before heading to Peru.

Where are the Rosario Islands?

The Rosario Islands are off the northern coast of Colombia, in the Caribbean Sea. They are part of one of the 46 Natural National Parks of Colombia. These islands are about 100 km southeast of Cartagena. There are 28 islands in the archipelago, but only a few are accessible to tourists. Isla Grande is the largest island in the group.

The Rosario islands have clear blue-green water, beautiful coral reefs, small white sandy beaches, and a lot of peace and quiet. If you’re looking for a wide white sand beach, you might prefer Playa Blanca, on Isla Baru, which is not part of the Rosario Islands. We visited Playa Blanca as a day trip from Cartegena.

How to Get to the Rosario Islands with Kids

You get to the Rosario Islands via a water taxi, which you must book in advance. There are several companies that make the journey, leaving from the Muelle de la Bodeguita in the morning, with return boats in the afternoon. The trip takes about an hour each way. The boat will stop at the dock of each resort to let you off exactly where you are staying.

We used Cartegena Life since it was recommended by the hotel where we stayed. Water taxis cost about 70K pesos each way. There was a Google form included with our reservation that was not working, I noticed the night before our trip that there was a request in our email confirmation to send over passport numbers to secure our trip. Watch for this! Once I sent over that information, I got a return email that included exactly who to look for the next morning at the dock.

What Can Families Do On the Rosario Islands?

The Rosario Islands are a great way to experience the Caribbean Ocean without the crowds of beaches closer to Cartagena. You can swim, snorkel, scuba dive, or sit in a hammock and read a paperback novel. Our kids loved kayaking around the bay and playing in the warm water.

Travel Tips for Visiting the Rosario Islands with Kids

Here are our best tips for visiting the Rosario Islands with kids. Many of these things we learned along the way and wish we knew before! Hopefully, they’ll help you plan a great tropical family vacation.

These tips are based on our experience visiting Isla Grande for three nights, staying at the Rosario Ecohotel .

1. Get to the Port Early

The port is a bit chaotic- best to get there early. From the pegasus statues across from the entrance to Old Town Cartagena, head down the pier (with the water on your left. You’ll pass a series of smaller boats before reaching the numbered dock gates. Your boat company should let you know exactly which gate to enter.

Find Your Gate

We left from Gate 1. There were tons of people arriving by foot and buses and the area was packed with lines of people and staff with clipboards. We were able to find our company representative and paid the dock tax directly to the company- 20k pesos per person.

They then added us to a handwritten list and gave us a receipt for our tax payment. This slip gets you through the turnstile to enter the dock. We were also given a bracelet to indicate our boat, and directions to “head to the right”.

We found other tourists with similar bracelets waiting, and joined the group. By the time we got there, however, all the chairs and the standing room in the shade were taken. We ended up waiting in the sun, which was brutally hot.

The Boarding Process

Our group started to board a bit after nine- we were next in line to enter the small boat when they realized they had too many people for the boat. We were told to wait for the next boat and headed back to the waiting area.

They then realized they had three open spots on another boat, and asked us to get on there, with one kid on our laps, which we did. At this point, an inspector came over and said that boat was too full, so a discussion ensued, and the people next to us were asked to leave the boat.

Finally, we pulled away from the dock and started our journey. I believe if we had arrived a little earlier, we could have been waiting in the shade and possibly been on that first boat.

2. Wear a Bathing Suit on the Boat

It’s best to wear a bathing suit and cover-up on the boat. Going out to the islands in the morning, the water is relatively calm, and most likely, you will not get wet.

However, after we arrived at our resort, we waited almost two hours for our room to be ready. There was one outdoor bathroom, we were not in our swim clothes, and we hadn’t planned on changing quickly or easily.

We ended up spending our first few hours hot, hungry, and grumpy, rather than being ready to jump in the water and cool off right away. We would have been better off wearing suits on the boat so we could relax faster without going through our luggage.

On the return trip, you will leave the islands in the afternoon, when the water is much rougher. It is highly likely that you will get wet. Dress accordingly.

The front of the boat gets less spray but can be very bumpy as you hit the waves. The rear of the boat has a smoother ride but also tends to get more of the spray on the sides. If you are among the first to board or you have a choice, go for the middle seats towards the back (luggage is stowed at the bow of the boat and stays dry).

3. Leave Your Bags Behind

You won’t need much on the islands- pack one bag for all of you with the essentials- bathing suits, sunscreen, pajamas, and a change or two of clothes. Leave the rest of your bags behind in Cartagena. We left our bags at the hotel we checked out of and picked them up after our trip to the islands.

The Rosario Islands are a great place to unwind and unplug, so leave laptops and other gear back on the mainland. You won’t have to worry about them getting wet, and you won’t need them there!

4. Bring a Waterproof Bag

We have a small waterproof dry bag that we usually keep our goggles in. This came in really handy for keeping our money and our phones dry on the boats over and back, as well as on tours around the islands. A bag like this also makes your phone less of a target than leaving it out on a table while you take a dip in the ocean.

5. Bring Water Shoes

The Rosario Islands are rocky and full of coral reefs. Which means they are tough on feet. S (7) cut her foot open in the swimming area the first day, we made sure to use water shoes each time after that. You’ll be much more comfortable if you don’t have to watch your steps so closely.

6. Consider an All-Inclusive Resort

We stayed at the Rosario Ecohotel , which included breakfast, but not lunch or dinner. We thought we might venture into the town in the middle of the island for some meals, so we didn’t choose an all-inclusive.

We quickly found that the town is not really set up for this, and ate all our meals at the hotel.

One of the tiring aspects of long-term travel is having to constantly figure out what and where to eat- having an all-inclusive would have taken some of the pressure off of exactly what and how much food to order at each meal.

7. Look for a Sandy Beach

We found the rocky nature of the islands a bit tough for kids. S(7) was big enough and tall enough, that she could play in the water with an adult watching nearby. However, E (4) is much lighter and shorter, and not as strong a swimmer. With the current, choppy waves, and depth of the water right at the edge of the resort, we felt she could only go in the water when an adult was actually in the water with her.

Ideally, there would have been a more calm or shallow area that she could have played in more independently. If you have young kids, consider a hotel with a larger section of sandy beach. Hotel Isla del Sol has one of the largest sandy areas in a protected cove. This all-inclusive also has a swimming pool.

8. Expect High Prices

You are on an island, with very few options, expect high prices. Food and drinks are more expensive on the islands than on the mainland. Drinks ranged from 10K pesos for a beer, to 50K for an Instagram-able cocktail.

9. Bring Cash

Most hotels will charge food and drink to your room tab, which you can pay with a credit card before you leave. Any other purchases including tours or excursions will need to be paid in cash. There is no ATM on the island.

10. Handle Wire Transfers

Especially during the high season, hotels may request that you pay a 50% deposit via wire transfer to hold your reservation. As the American banking system is not set up to do this easily, cheap wire transfers can be problematic. We found Remitly to be a great resource to transfer money- we used it both for tours and for hotel reservations. You can send instant transfers for as little as $3.99 USD, or less if you can wait 3-5 days for the transfer.

11. Bring a Beach Towel

Many of the eco-hotels charge extra for changing your towels. Save the towels in your room for showering, and bring your own beach towels. We love our Turkish beach towels – they dry quickly and are great for sandy beaches, cold boats, chilly airplanes, and everything in between.

12. Bring Earplugs

The northern side of the island gets very windy in the afternoons and at night. We had a second-floor room, and the wind just howled- topping over 20 mph one night. I’m only used to this level of wind when there is a storm and found it difficult to sleep through this less-than-calming sound. I left my earplugs in our hotel in Cartagena and regretted it, bring earplugs with you!

I love these reusable, colorful fitted earplugs – they block out sound (although not everything), and fit comfortably so you don’t feel them when you press your head into a pillow.

13. Watch the Sunset at La Playita

There is a small sandy beach on a sheltered bay that is great for watching sunsets. You can access it from the small dirt paths that lead through town, past Eco Hotel Las Flores, and continue west out to the water.

As a bonus, you’ll be watching the sunset from right next to the ruins of Pablo Escobar’s mansion. As you walk to the beach you’ll see the white arches of his house, as well as the now-empty swimming pool. It stands in stark contrast to the simple homes in the village.

14. See the Bioluminescent Plankton

Don’t miss this tour! Your hotel can help you arrange a tour to the nearby bioluminescent lagoon. We booked ours with a guide named DeNielsen, though our actual tour was led by Robin. It was just our family and the guide- we’ve found that the best tours for us are small like this- so we can tailor them to our kids as much as possible.

Boating Out

We met up at 6 pm. Since it was too windy near our hotel to get into a boat, we walked through town to La Playita, where we switched to a boat. We then had about a 15-minute boat ride around the island to a dock in the lagoon, next to Hotel Cocoliso.

We enjoyed seeing all the different beaches and hotels as we boated around the island. We paused at Hotel Cocoliso while our guide got gear ready, and while the night got darker. It’s best to go on a dark night- check that it’s not a full moon.

Into the Lagoon

By the time we got back to the dock with our gear, it was quite dark, and there were lots of other people also getting in the water. We left our shoes and towels in the boat (yay waterproof bag !), and got our masks and snorkels ready.

Robin was great about finding a small lifejacket for our youngest, who is not a confident swimmer, as well as a circular life preserver we could all hang on to and stay together in the dark.

Then we jumped in! With masks and snorkels on, we put our faces in the dark water and moved our arms around to activate the bioluminescent plankton. They looked like little stars in the dark water! It was really cool, and the kids were super brave about jumping into deep water in the dark.

When we were ready, we climbed out, wrapped ourselves in towels, and got back in the boat for the ride back. As a bonus, it was a clear, moonless night, so we had amazing views of the stars on the return trip.

Family-Friendly Tour

We had considered booking a bioluminescent tour while we were in Huatulco, Mexico, but we decided against it because it involved a long two-hour drive in each direction, a larger group, and would have gotten us back to our hotel around midnight. We were thrilled that we were able to do this as a family on Isla Grande in such a family-friendly way.
