Depart London on your scheduled, overnight flight to Kilimanjaro international airport.

On arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel just outside Arusha. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to settle in and relax.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Following breakfast, you will depart your hotel for your first taste of African safari in the beautiful Tarangire National Park. Open the roof of your jeep to view wild elephants marching across meandering rivers set against a background of grassy savannahs interspersed with the iconic Baobab tree, Africa's 'Tree of Life'. As well as reputedly home to the largest elephant population in the world, Tarangire is also thought to be Tanzania's premier bird watching destination. Following your safari leave the park for your accommodation on the shores of Lake Burunge.

Leave Tarangire and make your way up into highlands of the Great Rift valley for a relaxing stay overnight. Stop en route at the Mto Wa Mbu Village, where approximately 120 tribes reside, and have a local lunch. You will then continue onto Karatu where you will visit a coffee plantation.

This morning you will drive into Ngorongoro National Park. This exhilarating journey climbs up to the rim of the crater into mist-shrouded mountain forests over 2300 metres above sea level and then down into the semi-arid plains of the park. You will then have an opportunity to visit a traditional Maasai village. Sit on cowhide beds inside a thatched hut as the village chief's son explains in English the way of life, history and proud traditions of his people as well as showing you around the Kraal - a truly amazing experience and a great privilege. Continue on to Africa's best and most famous wildlife reserve, the awe-inspiring Serengeti National Park*. Enjoy an afternoon safari at one of the greatest wildlife-watching destinations on earth. Afterwards, arrive at your lodge for an unforgettable two-night stay in the heart of the wild Africa. *Packed lunch en-route to Serengeti

The Serengeti - meaning 'endless plains' in Maasai - stretches over 1.5 million hectares and is home to the annual Great Migration, in which over two million antelope travel north up to the Maasai Mara, following the ancient rhythms of the African seasons. This really is one of the greatest shows on earth. The Serengeti is also renowned for its predators, especially lions. Watch these majestic creatures in their natural habitat alongside leopards, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas, giraffe, zebras, buffalo and much more against the spectacular backdrop of rolling grasslands dotted with flat-top acacia trees and rocky outcrops. Today's full day safari is a highlight of the tour and a once in a lifetime experience.

Today you will leave the Serengeti and travel to the Ngorongoro Crater. Over three million years old, this ancient crater is the largest caldera - collapsed volcano - in the world and home to the highest density of lions and predators on the planet. Endangered black rhino are protected within the crater, hippos cool themselves in the soda lakes whilst giant-tusked elephants roam the grasslands and leopards recline on acacia trees in the enchanting Lerai forest. A truly magical day of safari awaits. Afterwards, ascend the ridge to spend your last night up in the mountains.

This morning will be at leisure before departing for your overnight stay in Arusha.

Breakfast & Dinner

This morning will be at leisure before your afternoon transfer back to Arusha in order to catch your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival transfer to your chosen beach hotel.

This day is yours to spend at leisure.

Maramboi was excellent - accommodation and food was very good Ngorongoro Farm House was very good - meal was good Mbalageti Serengeti - location was excellent, food was adequate but not great, also not enough food at times for everyone, desserts poor. Lighting in rooms very low and power went out during the night. Plantation Lodge - excellent - food fantastic Kia Lodge - nice place but rooms and linens could do with upgrading - meal was awful

Jennifer Blake

We stayed at 6 hotels. Maramboi tented camp was excellent. Mbalageti serengeti was wonderful.

Great trip. Nice size group of 9 the driver and guide were excellent, hotels were fab. No contact with rep in Zauzibar and also a bit confusing at the airport due to Mercury rep.

Terry Kitson

All very good and staff wonderful and motivated. There was some confusion over final night at Kia Lodge hotel if dinner was included, between the group we were traveling with. In the end the hotel agreed no charge.

5* treatment everywhere

The week on safari could not have been better. It was our best holiday yet. This was due in large part to Zablon our guide who found so much wildlife fir us. The lodges overall were very good. The Blue Bay hotel was excellent and the staff so friendly and helpful.

Ranjit Manghnani

Fantastic safari holiday and the highlight was the Elephant chasing after our 4x4 jeep and to see a Fully grown Leopard walking across our path.

Anne Watson

We have just returned from the most amazing holiday on safari to Tanzania. Our guide Zablon was amazing. There is nothing we could fault on this holiday. Even the weather although the tail end of the wet season was perfect. We did fill in a questionnaire before we left. Our stay in Zanzibar while at a lovely hotel, The Sultan Sands, where the staff could not do enough for us. We were met at the airport and transferred. Arranging to meet the rep the following day. Unfortunately all the information was in French and he seemed very surprised that we did not speak French in England. We arranged a taxi through the hotel to take us out. While none of this spoilt our holiday in any way, we have travelled with you many times and thought this was not up to your usual standard.

Anna Shapter

I was absolutely thrilled with the holiday. It was a dream come true and far better than I had dared to hope. Everything in Tanzania was wonderful, all the hotels were superb, the food was fantastic (and I am a fussy vegetarian), the organisation marvellous and the guides truly lovely – helpful, informative, nothing too much trouble and great fun. Tanzania is a lovely country and the safari ‘parks’ utterly unbelievable both in the amazing amount of wildlife and the glorious vistas which the best camera in the world would have difficulty in photographing. The standard of the hotels was truly astonishing, the food and service excellent and overall made the holiday – especially as a single traveller – amazing value for money. The overall holiday was wonderful and my thanks to absolutely everybody concerned for making my dream come true. I am definitely thinking of doing Costa Rica next year.

Combine safari games drives in Tanzania with an idyllic Zanzibar escape on a seven or 12-night getaway - with all travel, a choice of board, and more

Thick with dense and ancient forests, wild with iconic animals and baked by intense sunshine, Tanzania is about as diverse and beautiful as you can get. Jet off on this wild getaway and discover the best of bush and beach on an escape that encompasses the adrenaline-inducing search for wildlife on thrilling games rides, with the quiet calm of lying on a beach taking in the sound of lapping waves.

You'll start your sojourn with two nights in Zanzibar, where topaz seas, blue skies with cotton wool clouds and long stretches of powder-soft sands welcome you as warmly as the gentle rays from the sun. Discover nearby villages and wildlife reserves at a gentle pace, before flying to the heart of the Tanzanian wilderness for an action-packed stay at a traditional safari camp. All manner of animals lie in wait, from prowling leopards and majestic elephants to grazing giraffes and mischievous monkeys; spot them on full-day game drives, as well as cruising down the river on a boat safari and joining a close-to-nature bush walk.

After all this excitement, you'll be overdue for some serious down-time; so you'll return to your beachfront resort in Zanzibar for all the rest and relaxation you could wish for. It's a picture-perfect paradise, only made more perfect by stunning sands and mouthwatering Zanzibari fare. Plus, with the option to upgrade your stay to all-inclusive, dreams of (almost endless) cocktails by the pool just got a little closer.

Day by day Itinerary in detail

Arrival in arusha.

Welome to Tanzania. Upon arrival in Arusha, a local representative will be waiting at the airport to transfer you to your comfortable hotel nestled at the foot of Mount Meru. The rest of the day is free to relax ahead of your safari adventure, or depending on your arrival time, you may want to explore on an optional tour. Choose to discover Arusha National Park on two wheels, a unique way to spot wildlife and get closer to nature. Alternatively, take a scenic flight to witness magnificent views of the world's largest free-standing mountain, Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Arusha Serena Hotel.

Things to do:

Arusha coffee lodge: a plantation getaway, mountain biking in arusha national park, take a scenic flight over mount kilimanjaro, arusha and serengeti.

Transfer to Arusha Airport for your flight to the Serengeti. From your tented accommodation, you’ll spend the next three days exploring the vast plains of the world-famous Serengeti on game drives in state-of-the-art 4x4 vehicles, or on foot during a memorable walking safari (optional). In the evening, spend time around the campfire discussing the day’s sightings with the rangers and your fellow guests. Overnight at Lemala Ewanjan.

Uncomplicated luxury at Lemala Ewanjan

Serengeti serena safari lodge: the traditional african-style safari lodge, roving bushtops: africa’s only mobile tented camp, lemala nanyukie lodge: big cats and serengeti safaris, a walk in the wild serengeti from lemala nanyukie camp, the serengeti.

The Serengeti is home to one of Africa’s highest concentrations of large mammal species, with a particularly high number of big cats. The park also boasts some of the richest birdlife in the region with over 500 species including ostrich, hornbill, African fish eagle and the secretary bird. Visit during the dry season between June and October and you’ll witness The Great Migration, when over two million wildebeest thunder across the plains in search of lush grasslands. Set off on morning and afternoon game drives exploring the open plains in search of wildlife, before returning to camp for dinner. Overnight at Lemala Ewanjan.

Witness the world’s top wildlife show: the Great Migration

For a whole new perspective of the Serengeti, an optional hot air balloon safari is highly recommended. You’ll wake early and watch as the balloon is prepared, then take flight and drift upwards as the sun rises and wildlife roam below on the vast savannah. Returning to solid ground, spend another memorable day exploring the region and spotting animals on your final day in the Serengeti. Toast the days end with a sundowner in hand as the sun slips below the horizon. Overnight at Lemala Ewanjan Camp.

Fly high above the Serengeti on a hot air balloon safari

Spectacular serengeti sundowners and bush dinners, serengeti and zanzibar.

A beach break in Zanzibar is the perfect, relaxing end to an action-packed safari in Tanzania. Today, transfer to the Serengeti airstrip for your flight to the spice island of Zanzibar, where you will spend the next five nights. Overnight at Breezes Beach Club and Spa.

Baraza Resort and Spa: Sultan-era opulence

Zuri zanzibar hotel and resort: an eco-friendly oasis by the indian ocean, starlight-white sand and arabian nights at lux* marijani.

Zanzibar is famous for its spectacular white sand beaches and turquoise waters containing multi-coloured coral reefs. Spend your days on this exotic island lounging by the pool or on the beach, soaking up the views. As well as beach time, you may want to head to the Frangipani Spa, to try the ‘Apres Safari Treatment’, designed for those looking to recover after an adventure filled safari. Overnight at Breezes Beach Club and Spa.

No trip to Zanzibar is complete without exploring its unspoilt coral reefs teeming with tropical fish on a snorkelling or diving trip. Continue to unwind or if you have the energy try your hand at kayaking, kite surfing or sailing. Alternatively, immerse yourself in nature and explore the Jozani Forest, part of Zanzibar's only national park, looking for wildlife including monkeys, bush pigs and over 40 species of birds. Overnight at Breezes Beach Club and Spa.

Explore the wildlife-rich Jozani Forest

Relax on the beach all day or take a visit to UNESCO-listed Stone Town, where you can discover Omani forts, sultan’s palaces, as well as Freddie Mercury’s former home. Grab yourselves a souvenir from your trip at one of its busy bazaars. Overnight at Breezes Beach Club and Spa.

Tour Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed Stone Town

Enjoy a final day on the beach, or perhaps take one last optional tour to learn more about the fragrant spices that Zanzibar is world-famous for. Overnight at Breezes Beach Club and Spa.

THE TOUR IN SHORT

The most striking thing about a safari in Tanzania is the sheer number and variety of animals you see. It’s almost impossible to imagine how many animals there are. As far as the eye can see, you can see the animals you recognise from the nature programmes on TV. This is where they live, and for the next 7 days, you’ll be visiting them.

On this tour, you’ll visit 4 of Tanzania’s iconic national parks, each with its own distinctive features.

Tarangire offers majestic baobab and acacia trees and large herds of elephants. The diverse wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater in a relatively small area takes most people’s breath away, while the opposite is almost the case with Serengeti. It’s impossible to imagine how big it is – and how many animals there are here. The safari ends at Lake Manyara, where you can enjoy the lush nature and profusion of birds.

You’ll mainly be staying in tent camps, so you’re as close to nature as possible, but you get to sleep in proper beds, and the tents have electricity and their own shower and toilet with running water.

Following an unforgettable safari experience, you head to the wonderful Zanzibar, where you can relax on the white sandy beaches, explore the historic Stone Town, savour the island’s spices and exotic fruits, take a boat trip in a traditional dhow or explore Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park.

A tour to Tanzania  is a tour you’ll never forget.

Today is the day you set off from the selected airport and head to Tanzania with connecting flight(s) on the way.

You land at Kilimanjaro’s international airport. You might have been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Africa’s highest mountain from the air. Kilimanjaro towers a whopping 5.8 km from the savannah, and the snow-capped peak is in sharp contrast to the fact that you are now in Africa.

You will be met at the airport by our local guide. You will then set off on an exciting sightseeing drive to the small town of Karatu, where you will spend the night. The advantage of driving to Karatu today is that tomorrow, on your first safari in Tarangire National Park, you will have plenty of time to really experience the park, which is just 90 km from Karatu.

Sit back, enjoy the drive and soak in the African countryside. You’ll be in no doubt that that’s where you are. Small villages with markets, Masais with their herds of cattle and women in beautiful colourful dresses rush past the window.

Highview Hotel, where you will be staying, enjoys a scenic location, perched on a hilltop, with a colourful panoramic view of the green, fertile valleys and coffee plantations, where elephants often wander past, morning and evening.

If time allows, the afternoon can be spent relaxing at the hotel or visiting Karatu and the local market.

  • Endoro Lodge  4

  • Karatu Simba Lodge

A whole day of exciting safari experiences awaits you in Tarangire today.

Before that, though, we highly recommend that you get up early. Enjoy the fresh air and sight of the morning mist slowly lifting over the coffee fields.

After a hearty breakfast, you head to Tarangire National Park, which is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania.

The park is named after the Tarangire river, which flows through the park. In dry seasons, the river is the animals’ only source of water.

The landscape and vegetation are incredibly varied. The hilly landscape has nine different growth zones, and you experience a savannah filled with majestic baobab and acacia trees, almost taking all the attention away from the many animals.

The diverse vegetation attracts a great many wild animals. The park is particularly famous for its large number of elephants. Wildebeest and zebras are also found in large numbers, and kudu, impala and gazelles thrive here. The abundant prey here attracts lions, leopards and hyenas, and if you’re really lucky, you might also see a wild dog.

In the afternoon, you head back to Highview Hotel to relax.

You can certainly look forward to today’s drive!

From Karatu, you head through Ngorongoro’s hilly plateaus, where the red-robed Masai live in round huts, and their cattle graze between the zebras, wildebeest and giraffes of the savannah. Nevertheless, the Masai also live in the 21st century, and it is almost impossible not to smile when you see a Masai leaning against his shepherd’s crook while looking at his mobile phone.

Via Nabi Hill Gate, the route heads north-west across the endless plains of the Serengeti, where animals galore await you; millions of wildebeest and zebras, thousands of antelopes and buffaloes, hundreds of lions, elephants, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and thousands of birds. Serengeti offers one of the most amazing and unique wildlife and outdoor experiences on the planet.

Along the way, there is time to enjoy the packed lunch that you have with you.

You will spend the next two nights at Ikoma Wild Camp, which is located on the border of the north-western section of Serengeti National Park, offering a wonderful location and views over the Serengeti plain. You will be camping in the comfortable way, yet close to nature and the animals. The location outside the national park also allows for a number of unique experiences that you cannot get inside the national park itself.

If you wish to stay inside Serengeti National Park itself, you can opt to stay at Serengeti Wild Camp. You could also treat yourself to an upgrade to the gorgeous 4* Serengeti Safari Lodge with its pool and fabulous luxury tents. The view from the restaurant here is absolutely phenomenal!

  • Ikoma Wild Camp  /  Serengeti Wild Camp
  • Acacia Bliss
  • Matawi Serengeti Camp
  • Serengeti Sametu Camp
  • Ikoma Wildcamp: Walking Safari with “sundowner”
  • Ikoma Wildcamp: Night Game Drive
  • Ikoma Wildcamp: Sundowner

Today, you’ll be going on a full-day safari in Serengeti to look for the “Big Five”: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes. You have a packed lunch with you and thus the whole day to enjoy the wildlife of the fantastic Serengeti.

The ecosystem here in the park is considered to be one of the oldest in the world, and it’s difficult not to feel both humbled and astonished when sitting in your Landcruiser, absorbing all that you see before you. Outside the drought period, you will also see a large number of Thomson’s gazelles, buffaloes, topi, Grant’s gazelles, eland antelopes, warthogs, eagles, ostriches, etc., in addition to the animals already mentioned. Today, you will probably also see and smell the hippos wallowing in the hippo pools.

A fantastic day, just waiting to be experienced and enjoyed!

If you wish to start the day with a memorable, out-of-the-ordinary experience, you can purchase a balloon safari at sunrise over the Serengeti. Watching the sun rise from the basket of the balloon is indescribable. The animals walk about and graze below you, and you can see contours of the landscape that you cannot see from the ground. Enjoy the silence that is broken only by the burner of the balloon – and perhaps a couple of impalas roaring beneath you.

To take part in a hot air balloon safari, you will need to stay at Serengeti Wild Camp rather than Ikoma Wild Camp.

  • Hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti

In the Serengeti, you rise with the sun. After a hearty breakfast, you can look forward to yet another safari on the magnificent plains. Will today be the day that you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the timid leopard? And don’t forget to just enjoy the view and breathe in the fresh morning air. That’s the advantage of having plenty of time in Serengeti – there’s also time to enjoy the outstanding landscape.

At midday, you will enjoy the packed lunch you have with you in the open air. Afterwards, you head into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you visit the red-clad Masai at a local village and experience how life is lived in a Masai village and look at their handicraft, which is mainly bead work. They are keen to sell – and the jewellery is beautiful – but remember to “haggle”! Enjoy how the landscape has now changed from flat plains to hills with trees that the giraffes hide behind.

On school days – if you’re interested and time allows – it is also possible to visit a kindergarten/school in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area this afternoon. TourCompass has donated the kitchen building to the school and we also make a monthly contribution for uniforms, school materials and food. Read more about the school project here .

Today’s destination is Karatu with its scenic coffee fields. The hotel is a mere 20-minute drive from the gate into Ngorongoro, which means that you will be one of the first guests to arrive at the crater tomorrow. Although the crater is large, and there is a limit to the number of people that are allowed to visit it every day, it’s an advantage to get there early in the morning, while you’re still in with a chance of being one of the first to spot the animals.

  • Ngorongoro Wild Camp

The Ngorongoro crater is the world’s largest inactive volcano crater. The volcano erupted some 2–3 million years ago and folded in on itself, leaving a gigantic hole, which is today home to 30,000 animals and 350 different species of birds, all of which have access to water all year round.

Once past the entrance to Ngorongoro, you pass through a lush area of rainforest before the descent along the inside of the crater begins. After an exciting drive down, you arrive at the 260 km 2 crater floor. The rim of the crater towers 600 metres above you. You might be at the bottom of the crater, but you are actually high up, because the rim of the crater is 2,200 metres above sea level.

The day is spent in the crater – and there is plenty to look at! Lions, gazelles, elephants, wildebeest and zebras in their droves. If you’re really lucky, you might see the endangered black rhinoceros, which is almost extinct in Africa due to poaching. In Ngorongoro, they are protected by the armed rangers.

Lunch is enjoyed in stunning surroundings on the floor of the crater, and at the end of the day you will be driven back to your hotel, where you can relax by the pool, purchase a massage or perhaps visit the local market one last time.

After breakfast and check-out from the hotel, you head to Lake Manyara National Park. Extending over an area of 330 m2, this is one of Tanzania’s smallest national parks, of which the lake itself covers a good two-thirds, depending on the season.

It was here on the southern shore of the lake that Ernest Hemingway’s camp was situated in the mid-1930s, while he went hunting for the largest and most beautiful kudu in the nearby area, known today as Tarangire National Park.

Lake Manyara National Park was established in 1960 to preserve the region’s unique ecosystem, and in 1981, it became part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB).

The area is part of the spectacular Great Rift Valley, which runs all the way through the African continent from the Middle East to Mozambique. Researchers believe that this rift system will at some point in the future cause the African continental plate to split into two separate continental plates and thus tear a large part of the African continent apart from the rest.

The national park, which is long and narrow, is bordered to the east by Lake Manyara itself, and to the west by the slopes of the Rift Valley, which are up to 600 metres high. In between are open grasslands, a jungle-like forest, mangroves, hot springs and swamps. The diversity is unrivalled, and it is impressive to see how drastically the landscape changes in a relatively small area. With the many different habitats comes a great variety of wildlife – although the animals can be difficult to spot amidst all the lushness.

The great biodiversity in the park also attracts many birds – more than 400 different bird species have been recorded here.

Lake Manyara itself is a soda lake, and the water level fluctuates a lot depending on whether it’s the rainy season or the dry season. Along the shore, you may be lucky enough to see large flocks of flamingos.

After this final nature experience, you’ll be driven to the airport where you’ll catch a plane to the exotic island of Zanzibar.

The days are yours to do as you please.

Located in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar consists of the main islands of Unguja (unofficially known as Zanzibar) and Pemba, as well as myriad small islands. You’ll be spoiled by both fascinating culture  and beautiful nature, with

white sandy beaches, azure sea and a stunning coral reef. A hot, sunny climate all year round is conducive to relaxation and a beach holiday.

The island’s dramatic history includes Arab sultans, Portuguese seafarers, slave trading and European explorers, all of which have left their mark on the island. This is also where Stone Town, one of East Africa’s most exciting and charming cities, is to be found, packed with beautiful Arabic architecture, winding alleys, fun shops – not to mention the delicious Swahili cuisine and friendly people.

  • Discover Stone Town
  • Taste the island's spices
  • Rainforest and red monkeys
  • Full day boat trip
  • Discover the local villages

You are picked up at the hotel and driven to the airport, when your journey home starts. You will fly to the UK with connecting flights along the way.

You arrive in the UK after a wonderful trip.

If you love Marrakesh, you’ll love Stone Town too. Narrow, winding streets without pavements, constant swarms of children and adults, bicycles, donkeys and merchants peddling everything in small shops sitting right out into the road. At the square’s “barazas” (built-in benches) in the middle of the labyrinth, men sit and talk over cups of strong coffee while children play ball and a cat stretches lazily in the sun.

At first sight, the city looks quite ramshackle, but just take a look at the doors! The big, heavy, elaborately decorated wooden doors are in many ways synonymous with Zanzibar’s biggest city.

There are markets and museums here, plenty of excursion opportunities and a vibrant waterfront. During the day, the waterfront is well-frequented by locals taking strolls, young men making trips from the quay as well as fishing and tourist boats both arriving and setting off. In the evening, there is a local market here.

Stone Town is in many ways practically an experience of the senses. Here you will find smells and sounds, flavours, colours, history and culture – Stone Town has it all. It is no mystery that the town is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Safari Options from Zanzibar Island

Customizing your Zanzibar safari tour

There are no wildlife safaris available on Zanzibar Island where visitors can view all the animals found in a typical national park. However, there are various coastal marine parks such as Mnemba Island, Chumbe Island, and Misali Island worth exploring.

Better yet, you can easily combine your Zanzibar beach holiday with an exciting Tanzania safari experience in mainland Tanzania. The country offers a wide range of safari options, from the iconic landscapes of Northern Tanzania to the lesser-known gems of Southern Tanzania.

Let’s explore these exciting safari alternatives and see what each has to offer.

Northern Tanzania Safaris

A Zanzibar and safari package to Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater

Northern Tanzania is renowned for its spectacular safari circuit, featuring world-famous parks like Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park. These parks offer a wealth of safari options, including budget lodge safaris , small group or private guided safaris, and tours that cover top attractions such as Lake Manyara. The Serengeti, in particular, is home to the awe-inspiring Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing pastures.

In addition to the Serengeti, Northern Tanzania boasts the majestic Ngorongoro Crater, a unique natural wonder that shelters an incredible diversity of wildlife within its walls. Tarangire National Park is another must-visit destination, known for its massive herds of elephants and ancient baobab trees that dot the landscape. Truly, a Northern Tanzania safari promises abundant wildlife sightings and unforgettable memories.

Southern Tanzania Safaris

Zanzibar and safari package to Selous Game Reserve

If you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-path safari experience, Southern Tanzania is the perfect choice. This lesser-known safari destination is home to incredible wildlife reserves such as the formerly Selous Game Reserve, now split to include Nyerere National Park, Ruaha National Park, and Mikumi National Park.

Selous Game Reserve, one of the largest wildlife reserves in the world, boasts a diverse array of animals, including elephants, lions, leopards, and hippos. Ruaha National Park hosts large populations of elephants, big cats, wild dogs, and a host of herbivores offering thrilling wildlife encounters in an unspoiled setting.

A safari in Southern Tanzania allows you to:

  • Escape the crowds and experience the African wilderness in a more intimate and authentic way
  • Enjoy longer and more exclusive game drives
  • Participate in unique activities such as walking safaris and boat safaris on the Rufiji River

So, if you’re craving a truly immersive and unforgettable safari adventure, look no further than Southern Tanzania.

Coastal Wildlife Parks

Touring Coastal wildlife parks on a Zanzibar en safari Tanzania

For those who wish to combine their safari experience with a taste of marine life, the coastal wildlife parks near Zanzibar are a fantastic option. Saadani National Park and Mafia Island Marine Park offer a unique blend of terrestrial and marine wildlife experiences, allowing you to explore both the bush and the underwater world in one trip.

Saadani National Park , located on the mainland coast opposite Zanzibar and not far from Dar es Salaam, boasts a diverse range of habitats, from mangrove forests and tidal flats to savannahs and coastal dunes. Here, you can embark on exhilarating game drives, thrilling walking safaris, and exciting boat safaris, all while keeping an eye out for dolphins, dugongs, and turtles gliding through crystal-clear waters.

Mafia Island Marine Park, on the other hand, offers unparalleled snorkeling and diving opportunities, with vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish and other marine life. If you’re yearning for an incredible safari that showcases the biodiversity of Tanzania’s coastal regions, these parks are a must-visit.

Planning Your Safari: Tips and Recommendations

Now that you have an idea of the various safari options available from Zanzibar, it’s time to dive into the planning process. In the following section, we’ll provide expert advice and suggestions on optimal travel times, selecting a tour agency, and managing your safari budget.

With careful planning and consideration, you’ll be well on your way to an unforgettable Tanzanian adventure.

Best Time for Zanzibar Safaris

When to go on a Zanzibar safari tour

It’s worthwhile to contemplate the most favorable time for game viewing and beach relaxation when arranging your Tanzania safari . The dry season in Tanzania, which runs from June to October, is widely considered the best time to embark on a safari from Zanzibar. During this period, the weather is dry and sunny, providing excellent conditions for game drives and other outdoor activities .

On the other hand, the wet season from November to May presents more challenging conditions for game viewing, with wet and humid weather making it difficult to spot animals in the bush. However, the shoulder season from April to May offers a milder climate and active wildlife, which can still provide a fantastic safari experience.

Ultimately, the best time to go on a safari from Zanzibar depends on your personal preferences and priorities, so be sure to consider all factors when planning your trip.

Choosing a Tour Operator

Safari from Zanzibar - choosing a professional tour operator

Choosing a trustworthy and seasoned tour agent is vital for a seamless and memorable safari experience. Some highly recommended tour operators for a safari from Zanzibar and into Tanzania include:

  • AJKenya Safaris Ltd
  • Expert Africa
  • Intrepid Travel
  • Kilimanjaro Safari Experience
  • Spider Tours

When choosing a tour operator, consider factors such as the operator’s experience, customer reviews, and the cost of the safari . Look for operators that offer comprehensive packages that include flights, accommodation, and game drives.

At AJKenya Safaris, we offer a range of tour packages including honeymoon packages , group packages, family packages, solo traveller packages, and bush & beach holiday packages. With the right tour agent by your side, you’ll be well on your way to an unforgettable Tanzania safari adventure on a carefully planned safari tour.

Budgeting for Your Safari

Budgeting for Safari from Zanzibar

Budgeting for your safari is an important aspect of the planning process, as costs can vary greatly depending on the package and activities included. Wildlife safari packages from Zanzibar typically start at around \$300 per person per day, covering flights, transfers, accommodations, and game drives. When considering your budget, keep in mind that prices can increase for luxury lodges , private guides, and additional activities such as hot air balloon rides or walking safaris.

To find the best affordable safari package for your budget , we recommend:

  • Comparing prices, reviews, and organizers
  • Figuring out which national parks you would like to visit. Will you stick to the Northern Tanzania parks (Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara & Tarangire National Park) or go south to Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi National Park & Ruaha?
  • Thoroughly researching and budgeting for your safari.

By doing so, you’ll be able to enjoy an incredible wildlife adventure without breaking the bank.

Wildlife Highlights of Tanzania Safaris

Exploring the wilderness on a Zanzibar safari tour

A Tanzania safari offers a wealth of wildlife highlights, from the diverse ecosystem of Tarangire National Park to the unique tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara.

In this part, we will delve into the iconic Big Five animals and some distinctive wildlife experiences to anticipate on your Tanzania safari.

The Big Five

The Big 5 Zanzibar safari packages

The “Big Five” is a term used to describe the five most iconic and sought-after animals in Africa:

  • Cape buffalo

Spotting these magnificent creatures is often a top priority for safari-goers, and Tanzania’s national parks provide ample opportunities to do so. Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Nyerere National Park, and Tarangire National Park are all excellent destinations for encountering the Big Five in their habitats.

In addition to the Big Five, you’ll also have the opportunity to witness a plethora of other wildlife species, including:

With such a diverse array of animals to discover, a Tanzania safari promises an unforgettable wildlife experience that will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
