KC and the Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced into the music scene 50 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey—KC for short—developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string of hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s The Way (I Like It)” and “Shake Your Booty.” With sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an American Music Award, KC and the Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of the 70s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music. Today, KC and the Sunshine Band play over 100 live shows annually, circling the country and playing dates regularly throughout Europe, Australia and South America. This year KC will celebrate 50 years of entertaining us, writing songs, and performing around the world and has no intention of stopping.

Trade snow for sunshine: Delta’s new flights from MSP to Aruba, St. Maarten and more

sunshine travel & event

This winter, Delta is serving up new travel options from Minneapolis-Saint Paul to the tropical paradises of Aruba and St. Maarten. The airline is also enhancing its service from MSP to Grand Cayman and San Juan, Puerto Rico, offering customers more opportunities to escape the cold and enjoy a tropical getaway.    "As the leading carrier from MSP to Latin America and the Caribbean, we're looking forward to increasing our seats to these popular destinations, offering unmatched convenience and expanded choices for our customers," said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Network Planning. "With the addition of Aruba, St. Maarten and recently added Mazatlán, customers have three brand-new sunny destinations to look forward to this winter."

A row of brightly colored houses on a street in Oranjestad, Aruba.

Delta's new flights to Aruba (AUA) will operate on Fridays and Sundays. Travelers can unwind on Eagle Beach, snorkel in the blue waters of Baby Beach, explore Arikok National Park and enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Oranjestad.

St. Maarten

A Delta plane flies over Maho Beach in St. Maarten.

Delta flights to St. Maarten (SXM) will operate on Thursdays and Saturdays. Travelers can immerse themselves in the island's rich culture, visit the bustling Marigot Market, savor diverse cuisine at Grand Case, engage in water sports at Orient Bay and explore scenic hiking trails.

More sunny getaways for MSP travelers

Delta is also increasing its services to Grand Cayman (GCM) with an additional weekly flight, totaling three, and to San Juan (SJU) with two more weekly trips, totaling 10. And there's more to come this winter with the recently announced flights to Mazatlán, Mexico (MZT), another new destination, further expanding Delta's footprint in Latin America.    With these new and expanded routes, Delta will operate 126 weekly flights and offer more than 20,000 seats per week from MSP to 15 stunning destinations this winter, including other popular places like Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Liberia, Costa Rica; and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

“The continued surge in international travel has been a key trend for MSP in recent years, and we are excited to see Delta add this new service,” said Brian Ryks, CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which owns and operates MSP Airport. “With the addition of these new flights, Upper Midwest travelers now have their largest-ever range of options to Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s a great time to start planning that winter escape.”

A premium winter travel experience throughout the journey

Delta Sky Club customers can look forward to a comfortable start to a tropical getaway at Delta’s Minneapolis hub. Earlier this year, the airline unveiled its third and largest Delta Sky Club at MSP , featuring seating for more than 450 guests, a first-of-its-kind Sky Deck and more.

Delta’s St. Maarten and Aruba service will operate on the Boeing 757-200 (75D) seasonally this winter providing customers a choice of First Class, Delta Comfort+, and Main Cabin options. Travelers in First Class can enjoy a chef-curated meal experience as well as complimentary premium wine, beer and spirits. Delta Comfort+ passengers can also enjoy complimentary beverages and more room to relax. Passengers in all cabins will enjoy more than 1,000 hours of complimentary premium entertainment via Delta Studio, in-seat power and fast, free Wi-Fi for Delta SkyMiles members.    Additionally, SkyMiles Members traveling to their sunny destinations can also enjoy Delta’s new personalized seatback screen. Delta Sync seatback is a milestone update to the airline’s industry-leading seatback screens that make them feel more like smart TVs while offering a host of day-of-travel tools for SkyMiles members designed to streamline their travel journey.

Customers looking to book their vacation to Latin America or the Caribbean can do so through Delta Vacations - with flights as well as expert-recommended hotels, rides and activities booked all in one place. Only with Delta Vacations, SkyMiles Members can earn toward Medallion Status on the flight, hotel, car rental, and activity components of their vacation; earn bonus miles in addition to flight miles; and use miles to pay for all or part of their trip, making their sunny escape even more rewarding.

Caloundra Music Festival cancelled for good as Council pull funding for event

a crowd of people watch an artist perform on stage at night

Caloundra Music Festival, one of the Sunshine Coast's biggest live music events, is no more.

On Tuesday, Sunshine Coast Council confirmed they had discontinued funding for the event, which had faced the same brunt of rising costs and dwindling ticket sales affecting major music festivals across the board.

"Following the adoption of the 2024-25 Council Budget on June 20, the Caloundra Music Festival will no longer be funded by Council," a statement issued by the council confirmed.

The festival had already been shelved for 2024, with festival director Richie Eyles telling ABC Sunshine Coast in April that economic factors were largely to blame.

"People are doing it tough, disposable income is not there, and ticket sales, concerts, festivals are one of the first things to go," he said.

"The only sensible decision we could have made at this point in time was to cancel this year's event because the numbers didn't add up. But let's hope that's not the way it stays."

The long-running, family-friendly festival was established in 2007 and drew tens of thousands of people to King's Beach each year.

Those attendances had been getting smaller over the years, with the festival never getting back to its pre-COVID size. According to Council documents, just over 13,000 people attended the festival's 2022 event, compared to the almost 33,000 who ventured out in 2019.

"Rising costs, falling ticket sales and uncertainty in the music festival industry were felt to be too great a risk in the current climate," Mayor Rosanna Natoli said in a statement.

"We recognise that music events are important for our community and Council will continue to deliver smaller events and programs."

Over the years the festival has hosted a broad array of local and international stars, from chart toppers like Powderfinger, Missy Higgins and Jimmy Barnes to cult favourites like Parliament-Funkadelic, Galactic and Old Crow Medicine Show.

The loss of the festival is a significant blow for the Sunshine Coast's arts and music communities, leading Sunshine Coast councillor Terry Landsberg to implore people to support similar events in the area.

"I urge you to support other events, like the upcoming Big Pineapple Music Festival and Council's 10-day multi-arts Horizon Festival which will be held May 2-11 next year, coinciding with the 2025 Labour Day Public Holiday," Cr Landsberg said.

"I know the artists and patrons will be greatly disappointed and I encourage festival fans to support other festivals, venues and artists by purchasing tickets often and early."

Caloundra is just the latest casualty in what has been a horror year for music festivals in Australia.

Speaking with triple j's Hack program earlier this year, Australian Festival Association managing director Mitch Wilson said all music festivals were currently faced with greater challenges than usual .

"We're seeing costs up 30 to 40 per cent across the board, and ticket sales just aren't where they need to be to cover those costs," they said.

"Australian festivals are really struggling at the moment because of the strength of the Australian dollar, and travel costs are through the roof."

CMF23_Crowd_Friday_29-9-2023_Bruce_Haggie-2

Tentpole events like Groovin the Moo ,  Splendour in the Grass and Dark Mofo have had to hit pause on operations for 2024, while those that do go ahead face huge increases in operating costs for basics like staging, toilets, fencing, permits, transport, cleaning and police.

"I don't want to get the abacus out, but I can tell you it's an extraordinary amount of money," promoter Andrew McManus, whose Pandemonium Rocks event took place with a reduced line-up , told the ABC earlier this year.

"Unfortunately, with the state of play, our build costs over the last three years have doubled," he said of setting up one leg of an event like Pandemonium.

"That bill price used to be $250 [thousand], now it's $500,000."

Earlier this year, a report from arts investment and advisory body Creative Australia found that just 56 per cent of music festivals reported a profit in the 2022-23 financial year, with more than one-third of festivals reporting a deficit and 8 per cent breaking even.

London’s Friday travel discount had limited effect on capital’s commuters

Cathy Chen in London

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

A £24mn trial to boost Friday trips into central London with subsidised tickets only slightly increased passenger numbers on the capital’s Underground network, data shows.

The number of Friday journeys on the London Underground during the “Let’s Do Fridays” trial between March 8 and May 31 increased 3 per cent year on year, according to Transport for London data.

The scheme offered commuters discounted off-peak Tube and rail fares all day on Fridays, and was launched by London mayor Sadiq Khan to boost passenger numbers and the wider economy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Average Underground passenger numbers on Fridays during the trial period increased from 3.22mn last year to 3.32mn this year, the data shows.

The trial’s failure to significantly increase passenger numbers has raised questions over the value of the £24mn scheme.

Jon Tabbush, senior researcher at the Centre for London think-tank, said the trial was a useful experiment but the effects and scale were limited.

“There are political reasons for doing it,” he added, referring to criticism from opponents of the scheme that it had been timed ahead of the mayoral election on May 2 to score political points.

Commuting on the Underground at peak times from Zone 6 to Zone 1 costs £5.60 per journey but over the trial, the price dropped to £3.60.

Tabbush said the discount simply was not big enough to shift the needle for commuting professionals, adding that people were more likely to make decisions based on convenience, service reliability and whether they have in-person meetings.

He added that it was “good for the whole country for cities to be able to test out these ideas and monitor their results”.

Nick Tyler, director of the Centre for Transport Studies research centre at University College London, said the trial had not made a substantive difference to the number of Tube trips made.

He said the ideal was to have a “more civilised life by freeing up the working day, away from the 19th-century factory model”, by promoting flexible working and spreading journeys throughout the day.

Tyler said the experiment had addressed the symptoms rather than the problems themselves. “We should . . . figure out how to make the transport system fit with the people rather than force the people to fit the transport system,” he added.

Khan had previously said the trial was being introduced “to support the hospitality, culture and retail sectors as we continue building a better more prosperous London for everyone”.

TfL said: “We continue to analyse the impact of our trial of off-peak pay-as-you-go fares on Tube and rail services on a Friday, which ended on 31 May 2024.

“This analysis will take into account a number of aspects including assessing changes to both morning peak ridership and overall daily ridership, as well as the impact to businesses across London.”

The annual number of Friday Tube journeys decreased by nearly two-thirds from 223mn in 2019 to 96mn in 2021 but it increased steadily to 172mn in 2023.

Khan’s office did not respond to a request to comment.

The 'funflation' effect: Why Americans are spending on travel and entertainment

Taylor Swift performs on stage

Even while carrying  $1.13 trillion  in credit card debt, many Americans are still willing to splurge on travel and  entertainment .

But this summer it will cost even more thanks to “ funflation ,” a term economists use to explain the increasing price tags of live events as consumers hanker for the experiences they lost during the Covid years.

“It’s hard to overstate the impact of the pandemic. It changed the way so many people view their spending, and the result is that people are more focused on the ‘right now’ than thinking about 40 years from now, ″  said Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree and author of “Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More.”

The price of ‘funflation’

Some ticket prices have surged in recent months, according to federal data.

Admission prices for sporting events jumped 21.7% in May 2024 from a year earlier, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index data. The category saw the  highest annualized inflation rate  out of the few hundred that make up the inflation gauge. Admission to movies, theaters, and concerts rose a relatively modest 3% on an annualized basis.

The CPI  as a whole was up 3.3% in May from a year ago. The index gauges how fast prices are changing across the U.S. economy. It measures everything from haircuts to household appliances.

Why Americans go all out on entertainment

Despite rising costs, 38% of adults said they plan to  take on more debt  to travel, dine out and see live entertainment in the months ahead, according to a  report by Bankrate .

Meanwhile, 27% of those surveyed said they would go into debt to travel this year, while 14% would dip into the red to dine out and another 13% would lean on credit to go to the theater, see a live sporting event or attend a concert — including the European leg of  Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour , Bankrate found.

  • How to get a lower credit card interest rate
  • Here’s how ‘spaving’ could hurt your finances

“There’s still a lot of demand for out-of-home entertainment,” Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate, recently  told CNBC .

“Some of that reflects a ‘you only live once’ mentality that intensified during the pandemic, and some of that is because many economic indicators — including GDP growth and the unemployment rate — are in favorable shape,” Rossman said.

Younger adults, particularly Generation Z and  millennials , were more likely to splurge on those discretionary purchases, Bankrate found.

Although an increased cost of living has made it particularly hard for those just starting out, young adults are taking a more relaxed approach to their long-term financial security, other research shows.

Nearly two out of five Gen Z and millennial travelers have spent up to $5,000 on tickets alone for destination live events, a recent  study from Bread Financial  found.

And many say it’s well worth it. Rather than cut expenses to boost savings, 73% of Gen Zers between the ages of 18 and 25 said they would ultimately rather have a better quality of life than extra money in the bank, according to another Prosperity Index report by  Intuit .

Weather Alert: Heat, humidity, storms

SUMMERY WEDNESDAY STORMS

Heat and humidity will surge today ahead of a front. Highs will make it to near 90 again, this time feeling quite sticky. Hit or miss showers will start to pop in the afternoon, but rain and storm will likely peak at night or even early Thursday morning as a cold front interacts with the warm and muggy air mass. Storms may be on the stronger side, with locally torrential rainfall and damaging gusts. Stay alert for any Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued in your town both today and tonight.

CLEARING OUT

Stormy weather will last through early Thursday morning. By 8 AM it should be dry in Boston with gradual clearing underway. It won’t be quite as muggy or hot with highs in the 80s instead of the 90s. An isolated thunderstorm or two will pop up Thursday afternoon locally, but most will be dry and bright for the second half of the day.

Friday will be a treat with LOW HUMIDITY! Fresh wake-up 50s will warm to mild highs in the upper 70s. Expect sunny skies all day. The weather will be perfect for a visit to the Boston 25 News Zip Trip in Rockland from 6-10 AM.

High inflation is causing travelers to stick to a budget when planning road trips.  ( iStock )

Summer travel is heating up with the weather, but consumers are weary about spending too much. Nearly 71% of consumers blame inflation for impacting their road trip plans, an Experian survey found .

A majority of survey respondents planned to spend an average of $1,000 on their trips this summer. Road trippers plan to spend the most on gas and accommodations.

Auto insurance rates are also impacting travelers. Three out of four respondents to Experian’s survey are worried their rates will increase in the next year. This concern that rates will rise is causing a third of respondents to shop around for auto insurance.

States with higher insurance rates have the highest percentage of drivers looking to switch. About 14% of drivers looking to switch live in Texas and 11% live in Florida.

CONSUMERS DISCOURAGED BY HIGH INTEREST RATES AND DETERIORATING FINANCIAL HEALTH: STUDY

Many consumers plan to use their credit cards to pay for travel this summer

Most travelers don’t plan to use cash to pay for their traveling this summer. Credit cards are the most preferred method of payment, according to a PYMNTS study .

About 69% of those planning to travel will use their credit cards for at least part of their accommodations. The rewards and cash back programs offered through their credit cards are the most popular reason consumers choose credit cards over other payment methods. Cash flow management and accessibility are two other major reasons travelers opt for credit cards.

While a majority of travelers choose credit cards, 59% use debit cards and 57% choose cash to pay for their travels.

PYMNT’s data also focused on the financial picture of travelers. Higher credit scores indicate a higher inclination to travel. About 57% of high credit borrowers have summer travel plans, slightly higher than the 51% of those with mid-level scores or low credit scores.

Younger generations are willing to travel and spend more on live events

Travelers from all generations are attempting to be more frugal with their travel plans this summer, but millennials and Gen Z are more willing to spend in one area: live events. Gen Zers in particular are willing to splurge on concerts, sporting events and other live events, a AAA and Bread Financial report found .

About 65% of Gen Zers and 58% of millennials have or plan to travel within the next 12 months for in-person entertainment that is at least 50 miles from home, signaling a willingness to spend extra on travel. Just 43% of Gen X and 27% of baby boomers are willing to do the same.

Many Gen Zers are even willing to travel more than 1,500 miles to attend these events. Twice as many Gen Zers in the study said that they’d be willing to travel this far, compared to just 9% of baby boomers.

"Younger generations are leading the charge when it comes to a shift in consumer spending habits surrounding live event travel," Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel explained. "Gen Z and Millennial travelers are taking their trips to the next level by going farther and spending more than other generations for live events. They don’t want to miss out and will do what it takes to see their favorite artist, sports team, or other live event in person," said Twidale.

Not only are younger generations willing to shell out more money for travel, but also for the tickets themselves. About two in five Gen Zers and millennial travelers paid between $500 and $5,000+ for just tickets. Dipping into savings is no problem for these generations when it comes to live events in particular. Some would even consider taking on a side hustle to pay for any concerts or shows they’re interested in.

During long road trips, having the right auto insurance is crucial. Use a tool like Credible to shop around and lower your car insurance premium today .

Hot sunshine dominates but Met Office warn 'risk of thunderstorms' ahead

Britain’s current scorching 30C heat wave could be cut short, as the Met Office warns that there is a “risk of thunderstorms” ahead.

Much of England is covered by a four-day heat health alert that was issued jointly by the national weather service and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). It began on June 24 and ends tomorrow at 5pm.

The yellow alert - which indicates that weather conditions could pose a risk to those who are particularly vulnerable - is in place for the North West, Yorkshire & Humberside, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, south east and south west. Only the northeast has a green colour, which means that no alert has been issued.

Balmy temperatures of between 25C and 27C have been recorded across the UK this week, with the Met Office earlier predicting that there would be “plenty of sunny spells” and “very warm sunshine”.

Today, highs of over 30C are predicted in London and in southern regions, in what is predicted to be the highest recorded temperatures of the year so far.

However, the gorgeous weather could soon be brought to a dramatic standstill, as from Thursday onwards, a “cold front bringing a band of cloud and showery rain [will] run east/southeast across the country”.

The weather office warns that there is also “a chance of isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms developing during the afternoon,” on Thursday.

Mark Sidaway, a Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Although we are expecting to see some very warm temperatures this week, it may not be the wall-to-wall sunshine and blue skies people are expecting as there is likely to be some cloud around in places.

“Some areas, mainly central and eastern England, will see temperatures which exceed the heatwave criteria. To be officially recognised as a ‘heatwave’ though, the temperature must be reached for three consecutive days.

“Although we are looking to enjoy some nice warm temperatures, the weather this week does not look particularly exceptional or extreme.”

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “There may be dribs and drabs of rain and thunder during the start of the week, but it is Friday when things are really expected to fall apart.

“There is the potential for some very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, and this risk will last into the weekend.

The Met Office issued a Glastonbury Festival outlook ahead of the upcoming music event

“It is then likely to turn cooler, with Saturday looking like the real demarcation point between the hot spell and a return to more usual conditions.”

The Met Office also issued a Glastonbury Festival outlook, ahead of the popular music event, which kicks off today with 200,000 revellers descending on Worthy Farm.

The first day of the festival will also be the hottest, with temperatures of 25°C to 27C in Somerset predicted.

However, like the rest of the country, the warm weather will take a turn and give way to cooler conditions, with clouds to replace the sunshine.

However, whilst the sun may retreat, as the main stage opens on Friday, festival goers can still enjoy temperatures slightly above average, with a maximum mercury of 21C.
