Shawn Mendes Announces His Return to the Stage and a New Album Nearly 2 Years After Canceling Tour

Shawn Mendes

The singer took to Instagram on Thursday to announced the big news.

Shawn Mendes is stepping back into the spotlight and embracing his return to the stage.

The 25-year-old singer took to Instagram on Thursday to share the exciting news that he's got his comeback all lined up -- first with a headline festival performance and then some brand-new music.

"It's been a really long time since i last played live and I'm so excited to share that I'll be headlining Rock In Rio on Sept 22nd," Mendes wrote in the caption to a black-and-white snapshot of himself shirtless, strumming a guitar. "I've missed being on stage and seeing you all in person so much!"

The singer added, "I've also been working on a new album and i can't wait to play these new songs live for you. See you there. eu te amo!!!!"

The announcement comes just a few days after Mendes made a brief return to the stage for a surprise performance with Niall Horan in London.

Horan, 30, was playing a stop on The Show: Live on Tour, and shocked fans when he called on the "Stitches" artist to join him.

"Welcome to the stage, my little big brother, Shawn Mendes," Horan declared as the audience went absolutely wild over the unexpected guest.

Together, the pair performed a duet rendition of Mendes' hit single "Treat You Better," and Horan celebrated the appearance with a hearty "That’s my boy!" as Mendes exited after the number.

The news of Mendes headlining Rock in Rio comes nearly two years after he  canceled his planned world tour in 2022 to focus on his mental health  and wellbeing.

Back in January, he took to Instagram to share reflections on his personal growth over the past year.

The "Wonder" singer  posted a video of himself singing along to a harmonium  and expressed how this practice helped him cope with anxiety and fear. Mendes revealed that allowing himself to sing without the need for perfection became a source of comfort, emphasizing the beauty in the interplay between "right" and "wrong" notes.

"I realized there were only moments of bliss and euphoria from the 'right' notes BECAUSE of the 'wrong' notes," he wrote on Instagram at the time. "The only reason I can sing in key is because I've learned to listen."

Mendes also shared that his most significant lesson in 2023 was "to accept and welcome the lows of life" and not constantly seek change to regain a sense of high.

When did Shawn Mendes' tour start?

The North American leg of Wonder: The World Tour kicked off in Portland, Oregon on June 27 and was set to end will end in Newark, New Jersey on October 26, 2022. Since Shawn's initial tour announcement, the European leg has been rescheduled until 2023 and the first show is set to take place in Bologna, Italy on May 31, 2023.

Did Shawn Mendes cancel his Wonder tour?

The Mendes Army will have to hold out a little longer to see Shawn on tour. On July 27, 2022, the 23-year-old Toronto native penned a message to fans on Instagram, where he announced the upcoming North American leg has been canceled. "As you guys know, I had to postpone the past few weeks of shows since I wasn't totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me," he wrote, "I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away."

He reassured fans that although he isn't touring right now, he is still working on new music and plans to release it sometime soon. "I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I've taken the right time to heal," Shawn said.

The announcement comes after Shawn postponed the North American leg of the tour due to his mental health on July 9, 2022. He shared a statement on Instagram with his fans and confirmed that the remainder of the U.S. leg was going to carry on at a later date. "I've been touring since I was 15 and to be honest it's always been difficult to be on the road away from friends and family," Shawn wrote before admitting that his decision to hit the road was "premature" and that he's "hit a breaking point" due to the pressures of touring. As a result, he postponed three weeks of shows to take some time to heal.

Which cities is Shawn Mendes playing for Wonder: The World Tour?

After playing in Portland, Shawn is hitting a ton of different cities in the U.S., from St. Paul, Minnesota to Orlando, Florida. He shared the official tour dates on Instagram in December 2021, which also revealed that he'll be joined by special guests Dermot Kennedy and Tate McRae .

As for the European leg of the tour, Shawn's good friend King Princess will be joining him across the pond. Starting in May 2023, they'll be playing cities like Bologna, Barcelona, and Manchester.

Are there any photos from the tour?

Oh, yes. Shawn performed in front of thousands of fans at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon on June 27, and the photos practically emanate the energy and joy from the show. According to his stylist Tiffany Briseno , Shawn wore vintage Tommy Hilfiger. His whole ensemble consisted of a black embroidered sleeveless vest, a white tank, black pants, and boots. What's the setlist for shawn mendes' wonder: the world tour.

The tour just kicked off, and according to Just Jared , Shawn plays 21 songs and one encore . Of course, his biggest hits like "Stitches," "Mercy," and "When You're Gone" are included. See here for the full setlist.

Is Shawn making any sustainability efforts for Wonder: The World Tour?

Yes! His tour is actually changing the game when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint (more on that here ). In a statement released on April 29, Shawn revealed that he and his team are doing their part in taking specific measures to ensure the tour is sustainable. According to a report by Billboard , his tour will reduce its per-show carbon footprint "by implementing simple but effective practices that can be done by both fans and tour crew."

"No plan is perfect, but we see this as a starting point," Shawn said in his statement. "We are in a pivotal moment for climate, and it's crucial to me that this tour is a step in the right direction."

The tour has a goal to reduce emissions and in order to do so, they're offering merchandise with sustainable fabrics and fewer dyes and using energy-efficient lighting and power for the show. When traveling from show to show, the crew's opting for sustainable fuel options and will also be eating food that's sourced from local farms. Any extra food will be composted or donated to the appropriate organizations.

The tour's official website also offers resources for fans so they can carpool or use sustainable transportation to shows.

Shawn Mendes Gets Spiritual As He Embarks On His Biggest Tour Yet

After years of delivering radio hits, the pop star is wrestling with his creative future: "the type of music that I want to make, what I want to hear and what is important to me."

“I hit a low point a few years ago,” Shawn Mendes admits, his brow furrowing beneath his shaggy curls.

The sun is setting over a Santa Monica, Calif., apartment complex, and Mendes is leaning forward from his seat as he explains a recent major life change: his embrace of spirituality. It started with meditation to bring a little balance to his chaotic life of pop stardom. That turned into reading religious texts, which turned into a deep dive on the Bhakti movement in Hinduism. For nearly a year, Mendes has spent every Thursday meditating and discussing scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita with Jay Shetty, the author of Think Like a Monk .

“I think everybody has a moment where they just decide it’s time to kind of do something different,” says Mendes matter-of-factly. Now spirituality is “a part of my life that is much bigger than I actually even let on.”

It also provided an anchor as the pandemic turned his life as a road warrior upside down. Since signing to Island Records as a 15-year-old in 2014, Mendes had rarely taken much of a break from touring, often previewing and workshopping future hits for live audiences. Not being able to immediately perform his 2020 album, Wonder , was frustrating — but it also presented its own opportunity. “For years, it was run and gun, constant movement, and from a really young age,” says Mendes’ longtime manager, Andrew Gertler. “I don’t think he got the time until recently to really even go, ‘What do I care about?’ ”

Mendes has accomplished a mind-boggling amount at the age of 23: four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, 10 top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 , stadium shows opening for Taylor Swift while his friends were taking algebra tests, headline arena tours before he was of legal drinking age. With his string of pop-rock anthems — from the shimmering “If I Can’t Have You” to sensual singalongs like “Señorita,” with former girlfriend Camila Cabello — he has earned the adoration of adult-contemporary radio listeners and tween streamers alike, cementing his transformation from teen Vine sensation to one of the most bankable artists in pop.

Yet as Mendes prepares to embark on his fifth studio album, as well as his most expansive tour to date, he describes a quarter-life crossroads. After a few years in which the pandemic drastically shifted his priorities and his personal life received a new level of tabloid scrutiny, Mendes — who has long been candid about the pressures of the spotlight — is wrestling with his creative future. He speaks openly and thoughtfully about how the hit singles and sold-out shows are no longer the end-all and be-all they once were.

“There was a long while where I was convinced that you just had to write big songs,” he says. Now he’s thinking about a different kind of endgame: “the type of music that I want to make, what I want to hear and what is important to me.”

It helps that Mendes has found success when he has stepped outside his comfort zone. “In My Blood,” the lead single from his 2018 self-titled third album, leaned into a louder rock sound, with lyrics that focused on Mendes’ struggles with anxiety. “The night that song was coming out, I was like, ‘I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life,’ ” he recalls. Instead, “In My Blood” earned Mendes both praise for its vulnerability and a Grammy Award nod for song of the year; it also became one of his most enduring radio hits, reaching No. 1 on the Adult Top 40 chart during a moment when guitars were scarce on pop formats. (For his part, Mendes is glad that time has passed: “I love the sound of guitar rock, and now everything is guitar rock. Watching Olivia [Rodrigo] take that sound by the horns in an insanely talented way is fun to watch.”)

Two years later, fourth album Wonder offered a wide-ranging mix of wall-of-sound pop, synth-driven power ballads, bass-heavy club tunes and heart-on-his-sleeve lyricism, with Mendes co-writing and co-producing nearly every track. Still, while Wonder debuted atop the Billboard 200 and included the top 10 Hot 100 hit “Monster” — a Justin Bieber duet about the pitfalls of fame — the album lacked the type of top 40 staples that Mendes has supplied for years. It has earned 513,000 U.S. equivalent album units, according to MRC Data, whereas Mendes’ previous three albums have all topped 2.5 million. “For the first time in his career, he was really at the helm,” Gertler says. “It takes creative risk to do that, and you have to be OK with the fact that some things are going to work and some things aren’t. But from a musical standpoint, Wonder is my favorite album he has ever made.”

Mendes wants to continue that approach on his next project, for which he’s already “writing a ton.” He’s working closely with Mike Sabath (Lizzo, Meghan Trainor) and has been drawing inspiration from acts ranging from Bon Iver to Paul Simon to Coldplay — performers that don’t “put themselves in a box,” as he puts it. Mendes and Cabello joined Coldplay frontman Chris Martin onstage at Global Citizen Live in New York last September to sing the band’s “Yellow” — and Mendes was so inspired by the experience, he hit the studio the next day to work on “It’ll Be Okay,” a dramatic piano ballad he co-created with Sabath and released in December as a one-off single.

“I think he really cares deeply about what he’s singing and how he’s singing it,” Martin says of Mendes. “I don’t think he’s just in it for the fame or just in it for the money or anything like that. I think he holds the responsibility that he has really well because he has been a teen idol and everything. The music could be the last thing on his mind, but I think it’s at the forefront of his instead. He wants to sing things that really hit people deeply, and I think he’s getting better and better at doing that. So I just champion him all the way.”

Mendes’ next album will also be his first with new leadership at Island, which announced Imran Majid and Justin Eshak as co-CEOs last June after president/CEO Darcus Beese stepped down in early 2021. Now one of the label’s flagship artists, Mendes says his interactions with the new label heads have him feeling excited about his future.

“I got along with them really quickly — they’re just generally positive, about life and the industry,” Mendes says of Majid and Eshak, who were previously co-heads of A&R at Columbia Records. Gertler also points out that much of Mendes’ core team has remained through the regime changes, including Mike Alexander (Island’s newly appointed GM), Sharon Timure (now Island’s head of marketing) and Ziggy Chareton (a longtime Island A&R manager who now shares management duties with Gertler), making up “a nucleus of amazing people who really understand Shawn.”

Before Mendes can officially begin his next album cycle, however, he’s committed to his vision of presenting Wonder on the road with a 73-date tour kicking off in Portland, Ore., on June 27. In addition to a European trek that begins in late spring 2023, Mendes will hit global markets that he hasn’t yet visited in Asia and the Middle East, and he’ll also likely play more stadium dates than usual, including in Latin America, according to longtime touring agent Matt Galle. “We’re not trying to rush,” says Galle of Mendes graduating to bigger venues. “Obviously, we all believe that’s going to happen, and he’s going to be there everywhere at some point. But it’s also important to realize that he’s only 23 — he’s going to have a long career.”

It’s easy to forget how young Mendes is — partly because he has been in the spotlight for such a long time already and also because he lives a low-key life offstage. (His fondness for early bedtimes has earned him the family nickname “Grandpa.”) Since the beginning of his career, Mendes has avoided the types of controversy that often plague young stars adjusting to a bright spotlight — no arrests, no Notes app apologies, nothing that would cause concern for his cross-demographic listenership. Mendes and Cabello, whose duet “Señorita” became his first Hot 100 No. 1 hit in 2019, spent two years as paparazzi magnets before ending their romantic relationship last November, but Mendes says the tabloid focus never bothered him — “I honestly don’t care,” he says with a friendly shrug — or made him lose his focus on the music. “He has always been really good at cutting through the clutter,” says Gertler.

And for Mendes, the path ahead is clear: more shows, more albums, more opportunities to push himself. “I never want to stop playing, even if I’m playing for 10 people in a bar,” he says. “And I only want to play bigger shows if I get to do it by making music that’s authentic.”

The day before our interview, Mendes was 15 miles away at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., taking in the Super Bowl halftime show alongside his pal Niall Horan. As Mendes watched Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem deliver hit after hit at halftime, he wasn’t focused on the setlist or stage setup — instead, he kept thinking about how each artist had changed the contours of the mainstream and shifted popular culture in the process. “In Da Club,” “Family Affair,” “Lose Yourself” — those songs are all timeless in Mendes’ eyes. That’s the bar he has set for his own music.

“For me, it’s not to be like, ‘I have to change the world,’ ” says Mendes, an earnest smile breaking across his face. “I’m just saying, that’s where my ambition goes — to influence culture. I want to honor the opportunity that I’ve been given as an artist, to make something very true.”

Shawn Mendes Makes Surprise Live Return at Ed Sheeran Concert

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Nearly a year after canceling his world tour to focus on his mental health, Shawn Mendes made a surprise return to the stage Saturday at Ed Sheeran ‘s Toronto concert.

During Sheeran’s performance of “Lego House” at the Rogers Centre in Mendes’ native Toronto, he welcomed the Canadian singer, acoustic guitar in hand, onto the rotating stage.

Mendes then hung around to perform an acoustic rendition of his own “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” alongside Sheeran.

This wasn’t the first time the two hitmakers shared an arena stage: Back in 2017, Sheeran popped up during Mendes’ show in Brooklyn to play “Mercy” together.

Saturday night’s cameo was significant for Mendes however, as it marked the first time in nearly a year that the singer has appeared onstage. In July 2022, Mendes postponed and then canceled the entirety of his Wonder World Tour to focus on his mental health.

“I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal.”

Thus, Mendes’ appearance onstage with Sheeran could signify that he’s once again ready to perform live.

the experience was so magical and incredible, i wait him for like 4 years and when i saw him i couldn´t avoid to cry becuase i though it wasn't true. He is so nice, kind and the sweetest guy in the world. His passion for singing in front of a lot of people is so admirable, i really love his voice and how he interact with his fans like singing with them or go down and the end of the show for meet some of them and feel that connection between them. I really enjoy every song as long as I tore my throat singing with all my heart, the part of I was waiting the most was Bad reputation because of the rock sensation and power at that moment and in Never be alone was really magical, i've never though i was gonna be part of those lights in the show. At the end with In my blood y realize that it was done, that the show has over and I couldn´t believe it because it pass so fast. Everything was magical and passionate and I´m so thankful with Shawn for coming to my country and make my dream came true. I love him so much.

I have never seen a concert with so much energy from Alessia, Shawn and us fans!! Shawn made me cry with joy at the end of the night!! I am so going to see him again and even see Alessia Cara when she tours too!! Me and my 21 year old sister had amazing time and we couldn't stop talking about it when we came out of the O2!! Still happy right now the very next day!! Seeing Shawn Mendes at the end of the week was lovely and I got to meet so many lovely faces too!! Thank you to everyone who made that night possible

Shawn Mendes’ show was the best show in my life

It started with Alessia Cara performance. It was awesome, she sings really well and she has a really great presence in the stage I got really emotional and cried a lot during her performance.

Then Shawn Mendes started he really sings very well. He gave a short speech about every single person is important and even when we hit the rock bottom we are important and we have the power to change the wrold.

The visuals of the show were amazing and beautiful

The crowd was really loud we sang from the top of our lungs and everyone(including me) knew every single word of every single song the both sang

I don’t have words to describe the show... I cried a lot... I laughed a lot... I had lots of fun.... and I smiled a lot..... it was magical both Alessia’s and Shawn’s performance. I was really glad that he brought her(btw she is one of my favorite singers as Shawn is)

It was a really nice, emocional and a great concert

I will never forget this moment

Shawn Mendes Announces Return to Stage After Canceling Tour to Prioritize Mental Health

Shawn mendes announced he will be headlining rock in rio in september after a two-year hiatus from the stage for his mental health..

There's nothing holding Shawn Mendes back now.

In fact, the "Treat You Better" singer shared that after a two year break from performing to focus on his mental health he will be returning to the stage.

"It's been a really long time since I last played live and I'm so excited to share that I'll be headlining Rock In Rio on Sept 22," Shawn wrote in a March 7 Instagram post . "I've missed being on stage and seeing you all in person so much!"

And the 25-year-old—who last released his last album Wonder in 2020 and has dropped a few singles in the interim—also teased the gig would involve new music.

"I've also been working on a new album and I can't wait to play these new songs live for you," he added. "See you there. Eu te amo!!!!"

So far, the Rock In Rio line up also includes stars like Ed Sheeran , Katy Perry , Travis Scott and One Republic . And while his return to stage is exciting—this is not Shawn's first time performing at the festival, as he also had a 2017 slot in the Brazil-based concert series.

Still, fans of the "Stitches" singer, who said in January he's working on accepting the "highs and lows of life" concerning his mental health, will be delighted to hear this news after a relatively quiet few years for him. In 2022, Shawn canceled the remainder of his Wonder World Tour due to the stress of post-pandemic touring life.

"I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away," the 25-year-old wrote in a statement at the time . "I promise I will be back as soon as I take the right time to heal."

Throughout his career, Shawn has been candid on his mental health journey, particularly in his 2020 Shawn Mendes: In Wonder Netflix documentary, and he's expressed gratitude for the fans who've remained in his corner.

"I'm also really grateful for all the people that were so accepting and loving and kind and understanding," he told the Wall Street Journal  in 2022. "It just really made me see how culture is really starting to get to a place where mental health is really becoming a priority."

Mendes teased the release of the track several hours earlier on Thursday, June 8, uploading an Instagram photo of the Manhattan skyline cloaked in smoke amid the Canadian wildfires. (New York City and many East Coast cities have been under an air quality warning since Tuesday, June 6, as a result of the forest fires blowing smoke in its direction. The air, which has made it difficult for residents to breathe, has smelled like a burning campfire and makes the sky look orange.)

Camila Cabello Is Dating Again After Shawn Mendes Reunion Fizzles Out (Exclusive)

The "Señorita" singers appeared to briefly rekindle their romance in the spring following their November 2021 split

Camila Cabello is single and ready to mingle.

The "Bam Bam" singer is dating again months after she and ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes first sparked rumors of a romantic reconciliation that appears to have ended, PEOPLE confirms.

Reps for Cabello and Mendes have not responded to requests for comment.

Cabello, 26, and Mendes, 24, first went their separate ways in November 2021 after two years of dating. But in April, they were spotted kissing at Coachella, and a source told PEOPLE at the time that they'd "always seemed to have a special connection" and had "been friendly for months."

Though the pair were spotted out and about multiple times together in New York City and Los Angeles sharing some PDA — including at Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour stop in New Jersey in late May — reports surfaced in early June that they'd broken up once again.

Then last Friday, Mendes released a new song , "What the Hell Are We Dying For?," which contained lyrics that many fans thought seemed to hint at a split.

"Smoke in the air, the city's burnin' down / I wanna speak, but I don't make a sound," he sings on the track, referencing the smoke that blanketed New York City following wildfires in Canada. "Locked in my mind, you're all I think about / I wanna save us, but I don't know how."

The "When You’re Gone" singer opened up about the song’s inspiration to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, and explained that he'd written the track while struggling with feelings about his love life, among other things.

"I was upstate New York and just on the back end of feeling a lot of things about relationships, about my career, about [the] environment," he said. "And I was in the studio and this moment of just deep frustration came over me and I finally started to feel this inspiration come."

Mendes continued, explaining that he still feels as though he’s "in a very confused place" in life, and the song was his way of expressing those thoughts.

"I think I am approaching 25 still feeling quite confused about a lot of things in my life. And I think that was expressing that feeling of frustration about what is happening, this feeling of swinging the pendulum back and forth," he said. "I think I still am in a very confused place, but I know that there are some people in my life who I deeply love, and I know that music is something I deeply love, and I know that this planet is something I deeply love. And all of those three things are something worth fighting for and worth dying for."

For her part, Cabello appeared to hint at their short-lived reunion in a snippet of a song she shared to social media in April, shortly after Coachella.

"How come you're just so much better? / Is this gonna end ever? / I guess I'll f--- around and find out / Are you coming to Coachella? / If you don't, it's whatever / If you do, honey, it'll be all I think about," Cabello sang in the clip, which was titled "June Gloom."
