Description.

The Kaare Klint Safari Chair is one of the first do-it-yourself high design pieces: it can easily be assembled and disassembled without tools, making it ideal for being on the move. Klint designed his Safari Chair in 1933 and was inspired by the English officers chair he had seen in a travel guide from Africa to create a lightweight, portable armchair.

The Safari chair is available in oil-treated light ash or smoked ash. The seat and backrest are available in four colors of canvas or Thor ox hide leather.

Canvas comes with natural leather arm straps; leather cushions feature matching leather arm straps. Matching Safari Footstool also available.

**The chair always includes a cushion. The cushion is only available with buttons.

Kaare Klint ’s “KK47000” Safari chair is a testament to his exceptional design sensibilities and ability to transform historical inspirations into contemporary masterpieces.

Inspiration from British Campaign Furniture

The roots of the Safari chair can be traced back to the chairs used by an American cinematographer and his wife during an African safari. These chairs, captured in the couple’s photographs, bore a striking resemblance to the Roorkhee Chairs—a significant example of British campaign furniture used by the military. The Roorkhee chair’s distinctive features included the tool-free assembly, glue-less joints, and intelligent construction that tightened the joints when occupied, enhancing strength and stability. These chairs are considered among the pioneers of self-assembled furniture.

Simplifying, Clarifying, and Refining

Upon noticing the chairs in the safari photographs, Kaare Klint sought to simplify, clarify, and refine their structure. In 1933, he unveiled his final Safari Chair design at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition. The chair’s simple ash wood frame provided the perfect foundation for the exquisite, patinated leather components. The visible joinery and leather straps contributed to a raw aesthetic that stands out in any interior setting, especially when paired with more subdued pieces. Additionally, the chair’s carved, tapered legs added a touch of refinement to its overall appearance.

The Safari chair represents an iconic example of Kaare Klint’s design ideology. By seamlessly transforming a historical archetype into a modern, collapsible chair, Klint showcased his signature systematic approach, meticulous craftsmanship, well-conceived proportions, and remarkable material effects. While drawing inspiration from its British predecessor, Klint’s Safari chair exhibits sophistication and lightweight design, setting it apart as a distinctive creation.

Arguably Kaare Klint’s most renowned design, the 1933 Safari chair can be viewed as a reimagined version of a 19th-century camping chair. By combining wood, canvas, and leather, Klint ingeniously designed a chair that can be easily disassembled for travel—a deliberate nod to its 19th-century inspiration. This meticulous attention to detail not only establishes the chair as a remarkable piece of 20th-century design but also perpetuates a classic from the previous century, bridging the gap between different eras and showcasing Klint’s dedication to timeless craftsmanship.

The generations of the Safari Chair

‍ the safari chair's journey, from kaare klint's classic to modern interpretations by elias svedberg, arne norell, and bror boije, has left an indelible mark on design history. this iconic furniture piece continues to inspire design enthusiasts worldwide..

The so-called safari chair has for a long time been an object of interest for architects and furniture designers. The lightness, the simplicity, and the clear division between the carrying and the carried have inspired different generations to their interpretations and reinterpretations.

The first modern version, the KK 47000 chair was designed back in 1933 by “the father of Danish furniture design” Kaare Klint (1888–1954). Klint transformed the historical archetype into a modern Safari chair classic that became a recurring type of furniture for decades to come. Several prominent furniture designers have since taken on the task of designing their own version of Klint´s. ‍

Elias Svedberg (1913-1987) designed his version of the safari chair called the Triva Chair in 1944. It was launched in the range of the NK Triva Series and produced by NK Verkstäder (eng. NK´s Workshop) in Nyköping, near Stockholm.

Twenty years later upholsterer and designer Arne Norell (1917-1971) designed the Sirocco chair for his own company Norell Möbel. Sirocco proved to be a great sales success and led to the Norell brand being known even outside Europe. After 60 years the chair is still manufactured by the Norell company, today run by Arne´s daughter Marie Norell Möller. 

‍ The interior architect Bror Boije   (b.1942) is one of the foremost Swedish furniture designers of the 1970s. In 1968 he made his debut with the armchair series Junker for DUX - Bra Bohag, only 26 years old. Junker was a modernization of the classic safari chair and received a very positive reception. This was followed by a long series of successful collaborations with Swedish furniture manufacturers. As a freelance designer, Boije built his brand alongside the clients', in a way that was typical of the 1970s design generation.

Austrian architect, artist and designer Josef Frank collaborated with the interior design company Svenskt Tenn for almost 35 years, creating furniture, lamps and textiles that are considered classics of the Swedish Modern.

Description.

Kaare Klint’s KK47000 Safari Chair is a refinement of the chairs brought on an African safari by an American cinematographer and his wife. Klint noticed them in the couple’s photos. They were most likely based on Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military – possibly the first examples of self-assembled furniture.

The original featured glueless joints, tool-free assembly, and an intelligent construction that caused the joints to tighten when the chair was occupied, enhancing strength and stability.

Klint focused on simplifying, clarifying and refining the lounge chair’s composition, exhibiting his final Safari Chair design in 1933 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition.

While inspired by its British predecessor, Klint’s sophisticated, lightweight chair is defined by his signature systematic approach, fine craftsmanship, well-conceived proportions, and remarkable material effects.

This variant features a white oil treated ash frame, natural canvas, and natural full grain leather straps.

What is the Summer handling times?

Please note that the items in the shop have a longer handling time during the workshop vacation in week 31. This week will be added to the normal handling times stated inside each listing.

What is the Christmas handling times?

Please note that the handling time is longer than usual from December 14 to January 2. All orders placed in this period will be handled in the first week of the new year. We expect to dispatch the majority of the orders between January 2 and January 5.

Kaare Klint designed the Safari chair and stool in 1933, inspired by a British officer's chair he had seen in a travel guide for Africa. The first models of the chair were sold to some of Kaare Klint's colleagues, such as Arne Jacobsen, who saw clear possibilities in the simple, functional style.

The Safari chair is one of the world ́s first build­-it­-yourself pieces of furniture, and a signature piece of Danish Design history. Ships disassembled, and can easily be assembled and disassembled without using any tools. The flexible construction of the chair means it adapts to both the floor on which it is placed, as well as to the person sitting in it.

Kaare Klint, the man behind classics such as the Safari Chair and Faaborg Chair, is considered the father of Danish furniture design. For Kaare Klint, the son of architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, exposure to architecture was a natural part of his early development. However, it was primarily as a furniture designer that Kaare Klint made his mark on Danish architecture.

Kaare Klint was born in 1888 in Frederiksberg and designed his first furniture in 1914, for the Faaborg Museum. From the beginning, Klint's furniture was characterized by harmony between his choice of form and materials, often inspired by earlier styles or other cultures.

Klint helped found the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Furniture School in 1923, and was appointed professor there in 1924. In this role, he inspired and taught a number of prominent Danish furniture designers, who went on to pave the way for the golden age of Danish design, from 1945 to 1975.

Kaare Klint also founded the Furniture and Spatial Design Department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he employed a teaching method considered radical in his day. He asked students to construct furniture items from the inside out, based on thorough pre-analysis. The outward style was less significant; instead, the focus was on function analysis, choice of materials, and material processing.

Klint's influence led to a comprehensive renewal of Danish furniture design. He demanded clear and logical structures, with nothing superficial - only honest, pure lines, the best materials, and genuine craftsmanship.

The Safari chair has a matching foot stool which is made after the exact same simple principle. It comes in the same finishes as the Safari chair. The Safari chair is made in oil treated ash – either light or smoked. Covers are made in four colors of cotton canvas or ox hide. Armstraps can be ordered in natural saddle leather or stitched leather and will match the color of the seat & back upholstery. The cushion for the seat can be made with or without buttons. Please note: The stitches on the seat, back and leather arm straps will always be white contrast stitches except on the saddle leather arm straps, as they appear without any stitches.

Kaare Klint

 the father of modern danish design, kaare klint was an iconic furniture designer, educator and visionary who made his mark on danish design history.

Recognized as the father of modern Danish design, Kaare Klint (1888-1954) designed icons such as the 1914 Faaborg Chair and the 1933 Safari Chair, as well as the design for the reception room of the Danish Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.

As the son of architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, Kaare Klint was immersed in architecture from an early age, but made his mark on Danish design history as a furniture designer and educator. In 1924, he helped establish the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As associate professor and later professor, he inspired some of the greatest Danish furniture designers and architects – including Hans J. Wegner, Mogens Koch, Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm – who would continue shaping the Golden Age of Danish design from the early 1940s.  Today, Klint is regarded as a reformer: as one of the first designers to put functionalism and the practical study of architecture and furniture design principles above style, he redefined a period otherwise characterized by style-focused academic teaching.

Klint had an outstanding sense of proportion and space, and created “human furniture” based on studies of the human body. He studied an object’s uses over its form, and renewed Danish furniture design by refining tradition and developing objects perfectly in relation to their primary purpose. Klint was also aware of designs’ relationship to its environment, insisting his pieces never dominate a space, but unite form and function for a greater whole.

In all his work, he insisted on clear, logical design, clean lines, the best materials, and superb craftsmanship. Klint earned many accolades, including the Eckersberg Medal in 1928 and the C.F. Hansen Medal in 1954. In 1949, he became an Honorary Royal Designer for Industry in London.

Hans J. Wegner

Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner designed more than 500 chairs in his lifetime – many of them considered masterpieces.

Ole Wanscher

Ole Wanscher was integral to the aesthetic and functionality of modern Danish design. Having studied under Kaare Klint, he helped shape Danish furniture design as a designer and as an educator when he took over Klint’s professorship at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Poul Kjærholm

Poul Kjærholm mixed his strict, modern idiom with superior quality and materials rooted in Danish craftsmanship traditions. Despite his short career as a furniture designer, Kjærholm’s craftsmanship and clear expression resulted in timeless designs with a global influence.

Japanese architect Tadao Ando bases his work on a design philosophy that unites Japanese design traditions with modern Western expression. Inspired by Le Corbusier, Ando’s style is minimalistic and innovative, with a focus on functionality.

Rikke Frost

Danish designer Rikke Frost has always been curious about the combination of different craft traditions and types of material, a fact clearly reflected in her design portfolio where traditional and contemporary design is expressed in sofas, tables, chairs and lamps with an organic idiom.

Fabricius & Kastholm

The design duo specialised in furniture design and single-family houses, and their designs were characterised by minimalism, sophistication, functionality, quality and their eye for detail.

Frits Henningsen

Frits Henningsen was an uncompromising designer known for his perfectionism and vibrant personality. He gave new expression to traditional designs and viewed quality craftsmanship as essential. Unlike most cabinetmakers, he always designed his own furniture pieces.

Strand & Hvass

The Strand + Hvass duo is part of a new breed of Danish designers whose work continues in a direct line from their celebrated predecessors. With the Extend Table design, they infused the modern Danish furniture tradition with a bold new expression.

Austrian collaborative, EOOS, were established in 1995 by Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann, and Harald Gründl. The trio study historical roots in a contemporary context and focus on myths, rituals and intuitive expressions, to create original connections.

Thomas Bo Kastholm

Thomas Bo Kastholm creates designs that unite diverse materials into compelling compositions with clear purpose. The TK8 Daybed, with its close ties to the core principles of classic, modern Danish design, exemplifies Kastholm’s ideals.

Morten Gøttler

Born in Copenhagen, and originally trained in shipping, Morten Gøttler became a self-taught designer and architect recognized for his exceptional understanding of wood and strong belief that innovation is the foundation for successful design.

Mogens Lassen

Architect Mogens Lassen created works rooted in cubist architectural ideals inspired by Le Corbusier. Considered a pioneer of functionalism in Denmark, Lassen’s designs showcased his ability to express ideas through diverse materials.

Arne Jacobsen

Kaare Klint’s Safari Chair Drawings in the Danish National Art Library

There’s little doubt that Kaare Klint ’s “Safari Chair” was directly inspired by Roorkee chairs built during the late Victorian era.

The chairs are so close in dimension that I use the same leather patterns when building an 1898 Roorkee chair or a 1930s Klint chair. As a builder, the only significant differences between the chairs are in the leg turnings and the way the arm straps are attached.

This observation isn’t to denigrate Kaare’s genius as a designer. Only to point out a close connection between campaign furniture and Danish modern.

This weekend I was delighted to receive some images of construction drawings of a Klint chair that were executed in 1933 by Rigmor Andersen , a student of Klint’s and life-long supporter of his work. These ink and pencil drawings are on display at the Danish National Art Library . The photos were taken by woodworker Jared Fortney during a recent visit to the library.

(If you are near Copenhagen, Fortney says you should get there immediately to see the current exhibit on Hans Wegner that features more than 150 Danish chairs.)

The three-view drawing shows a lot of good details. First is that the stretchers are indeed cigar-shaped and 1-1/4” in diameter in the center. Also interesting: The two back pieces are double-tapered. I actually haven’t noticed this on Klint chairs to date. So I’ll try that on my next one.

Because this drawing is scaled, it’s easy to see exactly where the transitions occur in the turnings. And lastly, the seat construction shown in the drawing in one I haven’t encountered before in the wild. The seat material wraps around the front stretcher and is sewn. At the rear, the material wraps around a dowel and is sewn. Then there are four grommets in the seat. Leather belting attaches the grommets to the rear stretcher.

This arrangement saves some material and makes the belting easy to replace. On a fair number of vintage Safari chairs the belting has snapped or rotted.

That Hans Wegner exhibit looks amazing. Been drooling over it for sometime now. They have what looks like a 2/1 scale rocking chair that and shell chair as well. Would be awesome to see.

I saw the rocking chair and took a couple of pics, wish I had not waited for people to get out of the shot, no sense of scale! The shell chair is there and in addition it has all the parts that go into this chair, piled on the floor beside it. Not my cup of tea, but very cool how the parts slide together, Danish engineering when it comes to furniture construction is a unique art-form.

Kaare Klint Chairs

Architect, teacher and furniture designer Kaare Klint is among the most important figures in Scandinavian modernism . Widely recognized as the father of modern Danish furniture , Klint sought to pay homage to historical furniture styles and prized functionality as essential to designing for modern living. He established the design school at Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts , and his students became mid-century legends of cabinetry and furniture-making.

Klint prioritized functionalism and drew on an array of influences in his own work. Furniture experts will observe the influence of 18th-century English seating in his Red chair, while Klint’s iconic Safari chair had roots in campaign furniture . The other exemplary chairs , sofas and tables for which he is known bear the mark of Thomas Chippendale and Biedermeier furniture as well as Greek and Roman forms.

Klint's father was Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, a formidable architect of his day. The younger Klint initially followed in his father’s footsteps, studying under him as well as distinguished architect Carl Petersen. Alongside Danish architect Ivar Bentsen, he headed the renovation of the Designmuseum Denmark in Copenhagen from 1920–26 (Klint also furnished the institution as part of the project). Around the same time, Klint helped found the furniture design school at the Royal Danish Academy. The impact of his role as an instructor there cannot be overstated — he mentored such esteemed cabinetmakers and furniture designers as Børge Mogensen , Hans Wegner and Ole Wanscher .

A prominent advocate of ergonomics, Klint valued comfort and functionality over style. Painstaking research went into each piece of sophisticated yet wholly unadorned furniture he designed, as he endeavored to build structures that took into consideration human proportions and scale. And like the Shakers , Klint believed that quality craftsmanship and good materials were integral to the design of durable furniture that was free of embellishment.

The humble grace of Klint’s style characterizes legendary seating designs that continue to charm today’s legions of mid-century modern enthusiasts. His Safari chair, Faaborg chair , Ravenna armchair and Propeller stool — as well as most of the seating created by Danish modernists generally — have warmed interiors and influenced furniture designers all over the world.
