The Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Tours Of Summer 2024

Aaron Williams

Summer’s here, which means a whole slew of summer tours from your favorite artists. From Childish Gambino to That Mexican OT, there’s a tour for practically any hip-hop fan’s taste. There’s even a little old-school flavor, courtesy of Missy Elliott (sorry, guys, but it’s true — Missy’s old school now).

Here are the most anticipated hip-hop tours of summer 2024.

Childish Gambino — The New World Tour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Donald Glover (@donaldglover)

Donald Glover’s most recent work as Childish Gambino hasn’t fallen under the umbrella of hip-hop in the strictest sense, but considering the bulk of his early work consisted of beats and rhymes, there’s a pretty strong chance that he’ll dip into those catalog hits. Not to mention, he has a string of featured artists he can call on such as Chance The Rapper and Young Nudy.

You can find dates and ticketing info here .

French Montana — Gotta See It To Believe It Tour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by French Montana (@frenchmontana)

Fresh off the release of his new mixtape, Mac & Cheese 5 , the Bronx rapper has tapped fellow New Yorkers Fabolous and Fivio Foreign for his Gotta See It To Believe It Tour . Kicking off in August and running through the month, it’s a short tour that will stick mainly to the regions closest to his home base.

Future & Metro Boomin — We Trust You Tour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Young Metro 3 Times 💔 (@metroboomin)

Their albums We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You may have turned the hip-hop world on its ears, but it seems they aren’t finished just yet. Although the tour is promoting their new albums, they have enough collaborations to make it worth the price of admission even without them.

Ken Carson — Chaos World Tour

UPDATE 🚨: Ken Carson’s Chaos Tour has been upgraded & new dates have been added ‼️ pic.twitter.com/b7zYp53xsd — Ken Carson Related (@kenrelated) April 26, 2024

Playboi Carti fans took a blow earlier this year with the cancelation of his Antagonist Tour . But fans of his label, Opium, still get the chance to catch at least one of the artists billed to open on that tour in Ken Carson’s Chaos World Tour . And hey, maybe Carti himself will put in an appearance.

Megan Thee Stallion — Hot Girl Summer Tour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Megan Thee Stallion (@theestallion)

Yes, I know. Megan’s tour has been in full swing for the past two weeks . But the bulk of the tour is set for the month of June… and hey, hey, look around. Dates coming up include her hometown show in Houston, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Turn up with Meg and her opener GloRilla before she heads to the UK and Europe in July.

Missy Elliott — Out Of This World Tour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Missy Elliott (@missymisdemeanorelliott)

My personal most-anticipated tour of the summer is Missy Elliott’s Out Of This World Tour with Busta Rhymes. The Rock And Roll Hall of Famer hasn’t played shows for a few years (which is an understatement), but she’s proven that she’s a consummate performer who doesn’t have a speck of rust on her.

Nicki Minaj — Pink Friday 2

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Barbie (@nickiminaj)

Nicki Minaj just announced the second North American leg of the ongoing tour for her new album, which picks up in September — still technically summer — and runs well into the fall after she returns from Europe.

Rob49 & Skilla Baby — Vultures Eat The Most Tour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @rob49x

Rob49 was on last year’s XXL Freshman cover , and Skilla Baby is more or less a shoo-in for this year’s list (if XXL doesn’t drop the ball in a truly epic way). That makes their joint tour this summer (which technically kicked off over the weekend) the best chance to see them early.

That Mexican OT — Live In Concert

View this post on Instagram A post shared by That Mexican Outta Texas (@thatmexicanot)

June and July give breakout star That Mexican OT — and his openers Maxo Kream and Drodi — his second headlining tour since his breakout in 2023. With a new album, Texas Technician , he’ll have plenty of new material despite the relatively tight turnaround since his last spin around the block

Artists Who Are Going On Tour In 2024: The Rolling Stones, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo & More

The year is just getting started, but 2024 is already stacked with exciting tours. Open up your calendar and start planning with this sprawling list of announced 2024 tours.

Just a couple of years ago, live music still looked uncertain — would variant X, Y or Z derail the train for the umpteenth time? But in that regard, 2023 felt almost totally in the clear — and that's why it feels like the rubber band is stretched back for 2024, and it's ready to launch.

Sure, compiling every musical act who's touring in 2024 might be impossible. But GRAMMY.com's stylistic purview is far and wide: country, hardcore, soul, R&B, rap, indie rock, you name it. As such, we're giving it our best shot — and will continue to update the list as more tours are announced.

Without further ado, here's a major cross section of the 2024 touring landscape as currently announced — from Alvvays to Adam Ant , from Def Leppard to Danny Brown.

Metro Boomin's Essential Songs: 10 Must-Know Tracks, From "Creepin" To "Like That"

The 2024 GRAMMY nominee for Producer Of The Year is one of hip-hop's most in-demand minds. Between his collab albums with Future and some highly debated beefs with rap's biggest stars, it's the perfect time to revisit the Metro-verse.

Metro Boomin has spent more than a decade redefining rap music. The gloomy, 808-induced trap beats that flood radio airwaves and blare from nightclub speakers are a symbol of his influence. But now, the Atlanta-based superproducer is on one of his biggest musical runs to date.

In April, Metro released the second of two joint albums with Future , hinted at a third release this year, sold out a concert at the Kundalini Grand Pyramids in Egypt, and clinched the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 with " Like That " featuring Kendrick Lamar. He also delivered a first-of-its-kind instrumental diss aimed at Drake called " BBL Drizzy, " accusing the Toronto rapper of going under the knife.

The diss was in response to Drake’s " Push Ups " and subsequent disses toward Kendrick Lamar. " Metro shut your hoe ass up and make some drums " he rapped. The verbal blow inspired Metro to release the hilarious instrumental, which he encouraged fans to rap on for a chance to win a free beat.

Months before the feud, Metro celebrated two nominations for Best Rap Album and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical at the 66th GRAMMY Awards . While he didn’t take home a coveted golden gramophone, the momentum has elevated his career to new heights.

Before the St. Louis-bred producer kicks off the We Trust You tour with Future on July 30, revisit 10 of Metro Boomin's biggest releases.

"Karate Chop" (2013)

A 19-year-old Metro crafted his first charting single right before making a life-changing move to Atlanta. With piercing synths and bubbly arpeggios, the song was the lead single for Future’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Honest .

But Metro, a freshman at Morehouse College at the time, wasn’t sold on its success. " I never really like it, " Metro told XXL . " Then every time people would come into the studio, he would always play the record and I was like, ‘Why are you so stuck on this s—? We have way harder records.’ "

But after cranking out a new mix on the original track, " Karate Chop " went on to become his first placement on a major label album. The remix with Lil Wayne further elevated the record and, by virtue, Metro’s profile as a musical craftsman.

" Jumpman " (2015)

Metro mastered the late-summer anthem in 2015 with " Jumpman . " The song was the most notable hit from Drake and Future’s collaborative mixtape, What a Time to Be Alive, and went on to shut down bustling nightclubs and obscure strip joints. And while the record didn’t perform as well as other songs on this list, it secured Future his first Top 20 hit.

The song — which features Metro’s signature bass and a screeching raven sound effect — also saw a streaming boost after an Apple Music commercial featuring Taylor Swift rapping to the song. According to Adweek , the campaign helped generate a 431 percent increase in global sales

What makes " Jumpman " even more special is that a collab between Future, Metro, and Drake may never happen again. Reportedly, the duo is at odds with Drake because the OVO artist decided to link with 21 Savage on Her Loss instead of doing a follow-up project with Future.

"Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" (2016)

" Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 " is the song that set Kanye West ’s album, Life of Pablo, ablaze. Opening with a clip of gospel musician and singer T.L. Barrett’s Father I Stretch My Hands,” Metro’s signature producer tag kicks the record into full gear. The pulsating synthesizers and bouncy percussion match West’s raunchy and sexually explicit lyrics.

Metro’s production received significant praise, with several publications pointing to his contributions on end-of-year listings. And in the eight years since its release, " Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 " has been certified six times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America , making it one of Ye’s most-sold records of all time.

"Congratulations" (2016)

After the success of "White Iverson," a young Post Malone was on the hunt for the hottest producers in the rap game. He managed to land Metro, who worked with fellow producers Frank Dukes and the prolific Louis Bell on the triumphant trap record "Congratulations."

On a 2022 episode of the podcast " Full Send ," Metro revealed that the celebratory song was made after watching the world’s greatest athletes eclipse historic feats of their own. "I remember the Olympics was on TV, and just how the music was sounding, it sounded like some champion s—," he said.

"Congratulations" marked Post Malone’s second Top 20 hit following his debut, "White Iverson." The song was certified diamond after totaling more than 11 million combined sales. Today, it remains one of Metro’s biggest achievements.

"Bad and Boujee " (2017)

Fueled by virality and a shoutout from Donald Glover at the 2017 Golden Globes , the Migos and Lil Uzi Vert ’s "Bad and Boujee " landed Metro Boomin his first No. 1 Billboard hit as a producer.

The song has every element Metro fans have grown to love: moody keys, hard-hitting bass, and plenty of room for the artists’ adlibs to pierce through the track.

Two months before its eventual ascension, the song had a steep hill to climb atop the Billboard charts. But Metro’s production and the chemistry between Quavo , Offset , and Uzi helped the record shoot up to its rightful place. It continues to garner praise In the years since its 2016 release, too. It was ranked No. 451 on Rolling Stone ’s "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list

"Mask Off" (2017)

When "Mask Off" dropped in 2017, it scorched the Billboard charts. Hip-hop was flirting with flutes (as heard on songs like Drake’s "Portland" and Kodak Black’s "Tunnel Vision" — another Metro-produced beat) — but "Mask Off" stands out as the biggest song of the short-lived era.

Metro infused jazz-like undertones to perfectly meld the flute lick into the dark and mystic beat. The record led to the remix with Kendrick Lamar, with his verse breathing new life into the already-seismic hit. It’s now certified nine times platinum.

Years after the song’s release, Future said "Mask Off" initially put radio programmers in disarray. In his East Atlanta rapper’s Apple Music documentary The WIZRD, he revealed that the song dropped before Carlton WIlliams’ "Prison Song" sample was officially cleared. "Out of all the songs, ‘Mask Off’ wasn’t even legit," he said. "The s— was on the radio, they’re thinking it’s not a sample, but it got so big they were like, ‘It’s a sample.’"

"Heartless" (2019)

The Weeknd 's "Heartless" is a pop and electro-clash classic that fires on all cylinders. The visuals are atmospheric, the lyrics are ultra-stimulating, and the production — partly handled by Metro — makes for a lasting club banger.

The leading single for The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours, topped the Billboard charts. It marked the Toronto-born crooner’s fourth No. 1 hit and unveiled the depths of Metro’s musical arsenal.

Metro produced four tracks on After Hours : "Faith," "Escape from L.A.," "Until I Bleed Out" and "Heartless." On the latter and in his other collaborations with The Weeknd , James Blake , and Solange , Metro’s creative sorcery was tested. He proved, once again, that he could generate a hit outside the confines of trap music.

" Creepin ’ " ( 2022)

After a solid outing on his first album Not All Heroes Wear Capes , Metro returned with another series of hard-hitting records. His second solo venture, Heroes & Villains , featured John Legend , Don Tolliver , Travis Scott , and other premiere artists. But the biggest song to come out of the star-studded lineup was " Creepin ’" featuring 21 Savage and The Weeknd .

The only single to Metro’s second solo album struck sonic gold. The Weeknd’s flowy vocals overlay the silky and harmonic record, which transitions to a more trap-induced beat once 21 Savage’s verse kicks in. The remake of Mario Winans’ "I Don’t Wanna Know" was a notable departure from Metro’s past singles, which heavily lean on his trap roots. But it still managed to connect with his audience – and even beyond it. " Creepin " peaked at No. 3 on Billboard, which was Metro’s highest-charting solo record up until that point.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023)

Following the success of " Creepin ’" and his other smash singles, Metro extended his creative powers to the film world. He was given the green light to executive produce the soundtrack for Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse .

Metro Boomin told Indie Wire that he crafted songs from rough animations and selected scenes "just to get in the world and the story of Miles [Morales] and what he’s going through," He even exchanged phone calls and texts with the film’s composer Daniel Pemberton to ensure the soundtrack and score were on the same accord.

From the classical serenade "Am I Dreaming" to the Latin swing of "Silk & Cologne" and the Timbaland -stomping "Nas Morales," the result was an equally transformative musical experience. Each record ranged in musicality and tone while beautifully complementing the vibrant animated superhero flick.

"Like That" (2024)

"Like That" is easily one of the best beats in Metro’s catalog, and may end up being one of the most memorable. Samples from Rodney O & Joe Cooley’s "Everlasting Bass" and Eazy-E’s 1989 classic "Eazy-Duz-It" shaped the bouncy trap beat, sinister synths, and spine-chilling baseline. But Kendrick Lamar’s verse turned it into a heat-seeking missile.

With the song’s thunderous bass and rapid hi-hats in the background, Kendrick dissed J. Cole and Drake for their recent claims of rap supremacy, particularly on 2023’s "First Person Shooter." The lyrical nuke sparked the Civil War-style rap feud, which led to a seven-song exchange between Kendrick and Drake.

The initial musical blow made the genre stand still. It also led to the massive success of the record, which notched Future and Metro another No. 1 hit song. It also helped the pair’s album, We Don’t Trust You, claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Leap Into AAPI Month 2024 With A Playlist Featuring Laufey, Diljit Dosanjh, & Peggy Gou

Celebrate AAPI artists this May with a genre-spanning playlist spotlighting festival headliners and up-and-coming musicians. From Korean hip-hop to Icelandic jazz-pop, listen to some of the most exciting artists from the Asian diaspora.

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to welcome AAPI Month in full blossom. From rising musical artists to inspiring community leaders, it’s essential to recognize AAPI members of the artistic world and their achievements.

While AAPI Month is a U.S. holiday, the Recording Academy takes a global approach in celebrating artists and creators from across the Asian and Asian American diaspora. This aligns with the Recording Academy's growing mission to expand its reach on a global scale and celebrate international creators outside of the U.S.

Musicians of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage have not only helped establish the music industry, but have transformed it. From Diljit Dosanjh being the first artist to play a Coachella set entirely in Punjabi to Laufey winning a GRAMMY for her jazz-inspired pop, AAPI artists continue to influence music by both honoring tradition and reshaping modern standards.

It’s thrilling to see AAPI musicians continue to take centerstage — from Atarashi Gakko! to Tiger JK ’s memorable sets at Coachella, to surprise appearances from Olivia Rodrigo , Dominic Fike , and Towa Bird. As festival season gets underway, examples of the AAPI starpower from every corner of the world abound.

As one of many ways to celebrate AAPI Month, listen to the GRAMMY.com playlist below — as a reminder to give AAPI musicians not just their May flowers, but their flowers all year-round!

Chappell Roan's Big Year: The 'Midwest Princess' Examines How She Became A Pop "Feminomenon"

Just after Chappell Roan made her festival debut at Coachella, hear from the pop starlet about some of the defining moments of her career thus far — and how it all helped earn her a spot at one of music's biggest fests.

Before this year, Chappell Roan had never even been to Coachella. Now, not only can she say she's attended — she's performed in the desert, too.

Roan played an evening set on the Gobi Stage on April 12, and is set to return for Weekend 2. Fans clad in everything from cowboy boots, Sandy Liang-inspired bows and, perhaps most importantly, jorts, gathered to celebrate their shared love of Roan's radiance, karmic kink and gay cowgirl doctrine.

Throughout her performance, bubbles breezed through the air as Roan belted out her infectious (and aptly titled) track "Femininomenon," which speaks to lover girls forced to live in an online-dating hellscape. "Ladies, you know what I mean?/ And you know what you need and so does he/ But does it happen? No!" Following collective screams of pure joy, the already enlivened crowd roused to match Roan beat-for-beat, shouting back in perfect unison, "Well, what we really need is a femininomenon!"

In an era of bedroom pop and sad-girl music, Roan has been hailed by both critics and fans for bringing fun back to pop music. Along with her staunch sense of self, Roan's penchant for explicit lyrics that are equally parts introspective and horny makes her dance-pop anthems all the more infectious.

Roan's ambitiously experimental debut album, 2023's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess , cemented her status as one of the most exciting pop stars on the rise. While she only recently landed her first single on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Good Luck, Babe!," her rapidly growing fan base — and an opening slot on Olivia Rodrigo's sold-out GUTS World Tour — indicate that she's on her way to superstardom .

Perhaps part of Roan's magic is that it was all on her own terms. After parting ways with her first label, Atlantic Records, she built a loyal following as an independent artist before signing with Island Records last year. Even as a major label artist, she's determined to only do things her way; her indefatigable commitment to her craft — as well as writing her own rules when it comes to fashion and makeup — is precisely why her fans are so enraptured by both her music and persona.

Her fearlessness was on full display during her first Coachella set, where the words emblazoned on her bodysuit read "Eat Me." She talks the talk, and walks the walk (in fabulous, knee-high boots, of course), matching her unabashed aesthetic with equally bold career moves; for one, the openers for her headlining tour are local drag queens.

With eyeliner winged to the heavens, near-perfect vocal stability and fiery curls ablaze, Roan's shimmering Coachella Weekend 1 performance proved that her stage presence is equally dynamic. And if she had any doubters, she had one thing to say to them: "B—, I know you're watching!"

In between rehearsals for her Coachella debut, Roan took a look back on her journey to one of music's most coveted stages. Below, hear from Roan about five of the most impactful milestones in her career — so far.

Releasing Her Debut Album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess

I ended up signing [with Island Records in 2023] because this project honestly got too big to be independent anymore. I just wasn't willing to give up anything, any creative control or for any amount of money.

Being an independent artist was really special because I proved to myself that I could do all these hard things that I had never done. I built it with an entire friend group and many, many years of work. So it wasn't just me, but it proved a lot to me.

It proved I can make it through hard circumstances — with no money. You truly can. You do not need a label to do a lot of what an artist's career requires. You don't need a label to put on your own show, or make a music video, or even write a song, or find creative people. You don't need that s—t. I mean, a label is just money, you know? You don't need a lot of money to do this. To make it grow is, I think, where it takes a lot of money. That's what was difficult.

Music allows me to express anything, even things that I've never experienced before. It allows me to express queerness, even if it was only daydreams at that point. It allows me to express parts of me that I'm not even ready to accept yet.

I don't give a f— if you don't  f— with the music. You don't have to come to the concert. That's the whole point of it. You don't have to like it. I think throughout the year, I'm like, "What can I get away with?" Because right now it's pretty tame for what it is like to be a gay artist. But I just want to push it to see how far can I go — with the most controversial outfits or things to rile people up. I'm not really afraid to do that.

Having a song [like "Casual] with the lyric, "Knee deep in the passenger seat/ And you're eating me out," and it's being considered to go to radio. That's kind of a big thing to get away with.

It's not even that big of a thing. What's that song? Is it Flo Rida ? That's like, "Can you blow my whistle, baby/ whistle baby." Okay, that's obviously about like a f—ing blowjob. [ Laughs .] No one cares about that. To me, I'm like, Let's talk about eating out on the radio . I actually think it has to be bleeped, but still, if I can get away with it, that's cool.

Feeling Financial Freedom & Stability

Not making money at all just sucked. But I learned how to do my own makeup and bedazzle and sew a little bit. I think that the scrappiness came from [the idea that] it's scrappy if it's fun.

I think that's what kept me going — because if this wasn't fun, I would not even be here. But it was scrappy and fun, and it was with my friends. It didn't feel dire. I was also just working at a coffee shop, and I was a nanny, and I was working at a donut shop. I was doing part time jobs all on the side too. So it was all just rough [in the beginning].

I have freedom because now [singing] is my full-time job. It provides for me now. As the project grows, I can do bigger shows and be like, I want outfit changes now , and I want more lights, and I want confetti . I can afford confetti now!

It's about expanding the universe in a thoughtful way. And not just like throwing a s— ton of money at things to make things look expensive or wear all this designer s— for no reason.

I just try to look at how we are starting to gain momentum financially and see how can I intentionally use that to, one, pay the team in a way where they're not bare bones anymore, and two, [ask ourselves] how can we honor this project and this album and the queer community? Can we pay drag queens more? Can we bring drag on the road? Now, financially, doors have opened where we can walk through them with love and intention. Just recklessly, throwing money at s— to see if it works.

Opening Olivia Rodrigo's Arena Tour

Olivia [Rodrigo] just asked. It was official, we went through our management. But I was like, Oh my God .

Preparing a 40-minute set is a different vibe than headlining, obviously. You are going out to an audience that is not there for you and doesn't necessarily care if you're there or not.

This is, like, my fourth or fifth artist I've opened for. But for an arena tour, I just needed to gather my nerves. I think that's the difference between any other show. Like, F—, there's 20,000 people out there right now. I've never performed in front of that many people. I don't know what this emotion is, and I just have to tame it right now.

Standing Up For Herself Creatively, Even When There's Pushback

I stand up for myself, I would say, every day. Sometimes, you get this opportunity, a huge opportunity with a lot of money on the table. [Yet,] I'm just like, That just doesn't make sense creatively. That doesn't align with my values. I'm not doing that.

One huge creative decision was I stood up and pushed the entire headlining Midwest Princess tour back to the fall. The album was supposed to come out while we were on tour. I was like, "This is a horrible idea!"

That caused a big ruckus, but it ended up being fine, and I was right. I'm usually right. [ Laughs .] It's like a mother with her kid — a mother knows best. I feel like [that] when it comes to the integrity of my project.

I know how it is to not be able to afford a ticket or even f—ing food. A concert ticket, a lot of times, means multiple meals for someone. I get it, I couldn't afford some artists' tickets. That's why it's really important to me to try to keep them as low as I can and my merch as low as I can.

There's pushback of ticket prices being low and we're playing rooms that are so expensive. The fee to even play them is so expensive. So, you have to raise the ticket prices to just even be able to afford to play the room. There's always an argument [with my team] there, every tour. I'm in control of stuff and if I'm saying this is how it's going to be —- it's just going to be that way.

Performing At Coachella For The First Time

[After the first weekend of Coachella] I am feeling very relieved. I was so stressed about many things. How is the outfit going to work? Will the crowd really be engaged? It went so well, I have no qualms with anything. I loved every second of it.

It feels like I am partying with [my fans]. I am not performing to them; I’m performing with them. [I want people to remember] a really fun, freeing show. Very campy but very meaningful too.

Nicki Minaj Expands Her Pink Friday World Tour With New Dates

Nicki Minaj Celebrates New Year's Eve At E11EVEN Miami

Fans hoping they'll have the chance to see Nicki Minaj perform this year just got some good news. She originally announced the tour last year with 37 confirmed dates from the first day of March until early June. The original announcement features dozens of US dates across many major cities and a number of supplementary European stops afterward. But now even more fans will get the chance to see Nicki as she's shared more than a dozen new tour dates.

Among the 13 new dates are a number of second stops in cities already getting performances. Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Amsterdam, Manchester, Cologne, and Paris are all getting a second helping of the Pink Friday 2 tour. Brooklyn in particular is even getting a third show among the newly announced dates. She also announced that Nashville and Glasgow will be getting stops on the tour. She's even visiting two entirely new countries with newly added dates in Copenhagen and Stockholm. The tour is just a few days into its presale and has already sold out dozens of arena shows. Check out the announcement of new dates below.

Nicki Minaj Expands Her 2024 Tour

Nicki Minaj's new album Pink Friday 2 has been a massive commercial success. It rode in on a wave of immense hype as her first studio album in 5 years since 2018's Queen . Now over the course of just 5 weeks it hit one million total units sold in the US.

Another major accomplishment for Nicki came on streaming. Pink Friday 2 became the fastest album by a female rapper to reach 1 billion total streams on Spotify. The album was powered by smash singles like "Super Freaky Girl" and "Red Ruby Da Sleeze." It's also spawned some hits among the deep cuts with tracks like "FTCU" and "Everybody." How artists and influencers set the stage for Hip-Hop's global rise

After graduating from college in 1978, Michael Holman moved to New York City for a job on Wall Street, but he says his interests soon led him elsewhere. "I'd take myself to the 1 train stop on Hudson and Chambers and these trains would roll in with these graffiti burners, covering the train from top to bottom. And I just couldn't believe what I was seeing- it was this sort of beautiful vandalism."

Then Holman read a short blurb in The Village Voice . Fred Brathwaite, who served as an informal spokesperson for the Fabulous 5 graffiti crew, put out a call for readers to hire them to create custom burners at their businesses or homes, priced by the square foot. Intrigued, Holman called "Fab 5 Freddy" and invited him to hang out.

Against the odds: How Blondie shattered the conventions of punk and pop

Editors' Picks

Against the odds: how blondie shattered the conventions of punk and pop.

Later that year Fab 5 Freddy and Lee Quinones of the Fabulous 5 showed their graffiti on canvas at a gallery in Rome . Then in 1980, Freddy painted an eye-catching, Warhol-inspired mural on a New York City subway car- a string of soup cans that doubled as an announcement of his arrival as a significant creative catalyst.

As Freddy's influence grew, it expanded beyond visual art. He brought DJs Afrika Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay downtown to perform at the Mudd Club, and took Chris Stein and Debbie Harry up to the Bronx to see Grandmaster Flash - an exchange commemorated in Blondie's No. 1 hit song "Rapture." Harry then introduced the rappers Funky 4 + 1 when they performed at The Kitchen in SoHo , and brought them along as co-musical guests on Saturday Night Live , where rap had its national television debut.

When English punk rockers The Clash came to New York to record their 1980 album Sandinista! , they caught the beat too . The band's single "Magnificent Seven/Magnificent Dance" became a hit on pirate and college radio, as well as on New York's legendary Black station WBLS. Returning to the city for a 17-date string of shows at Bonds International Casino in the summer of '81, The Clash brought on rappers such as Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five as openers and invited the artist Futura (then Futura 2000) to paint live graffiti backdrops live on stage.

Although some of The Clash's fanbase expressed resistance to these creative alliances, the band remained committed to championing them. When the tour continued to Europe, The Clash took Futura along and collaborated with him on a graffiti rap , which he performed live in Paris.

At the same time, back in New York, ex-Sex Pistols impresario Malcolm McLaren was looking for the next big thing, so Michael Holman brought him to a park jam in the Bronx . "He was dressed like a Pirate from the Penzance on acid," Holman recalls. "Pantaloon pants and bright orange this and that, crazy- you know, like Culture Club."

Perhaps more like a culture clash, but Holman says something magical happened. "Jazzy [Jay] gets on the turntable and starts to scratch records, and quick cut, and do all of these isolated, you know, B-beats, and I'm saying to Malcolm, 'See what he's doing? That's like special mix DJing. And see that kid over there- he's like breakdancing, and see that over there? That's graffiti. And Ikey-C on the mic- that's rapping.' And Malcolm, like a lightbulb goes on, and he's like 'I get it.'"

In September of '81 McLaren asked Holman to put together a show featuring DJing, MCing, breaking, and visual art as an opener for the band Bow Wow Wow in New York. That led to a weekly revue at a club called Negril, where B-boys the Rock Steady Crew and Floor Masters (later the New York City Breakers) battled on the dance floor.

Another McLaren associate, Ruza "Kool Lady" Blue got things going at the Roxy, a massive roller rink where she added one more element to the mix by bringing in the Fantastic Four Double Dutch team, winners of the 1980 worldwide championship.

In the summer of 1982, the Roxy became the epicenter of New York's nascent multiracial youth culture. Building on that momentum, Fab 5 Freddy, "Kool Lady" Blue, and French journalist Bernard Zekri brought hip-hop to Europe. Dubbed the "New York City Rap Tour," the sojourn kicked off on November 21, 1982, in Paris , then moved on to Lyon, Belfort, Mulhouse, Strasbourg, London, and Los Angeles. Bringing all of the elements of hip-hop together, it showcased dozens of artists- including the Fantastic Four, Futura, the Rock Steady Crew, as well as Afrika Bambaataa, Phase 2, Dondi, GrandMixer D.ST (now DXT) and Rammellzee.

Photographer Janette Beckman was on assignment from Melody Maker to cover the London show. At the time she had been shooting two or three bands a week, mostly punk acts in small clubs. "It would be dark and, you know, people would be pogoing, spitting and shouting," she recalls. Beckman had never encountered artists scratching, rapping, breaking, making graffiti art, or doing double dutch- let alone at the same time. Nor had she seen the audience responding with such rapt attention.

"It was so different from anything we knew," she says. "It seemed full of joy I have to say." Although the journalist who accompanied her dismissed hip-hop as a passing fad, shortly after the tour Beckman moved to New York in 1983, and went on to photograph emerging artists such as Run-DMC , LL Cool J , and Salt-N-Pepa who would soon become iconic. By then hip-hop was already showing up in films such as Style Wars , Wild Style , and Flashdance , setting the stage for its global ascendance. Four decades later, it's still central to music, art, and fashion, and is even gaining recognition in the world of Olympic sports, where breaking will be featured for the first time at the 2024 Games– in Paris .

It shows the Like.. ? artist looking over her shoulder in front of a concrete wall and a recreated New York City subway stairwell with the letters “I-C-E” spelled out as train lines. A nearby garbage can also has Y2K sprayed-painted in neon pink and green, while “Ice Spice” is written out in graffiti across the cover.

Along with her album news, Ice Spice also revealed that she's heading out on a world tour that starts on July 4 in Roskilde, Denmark. The rapper's first-ever global outing — where she'll be joined by her longtime producer RIOTUSA and fellow Bronx rapper/special guest Cash Cobain on North American dates — will hit places across Europe and the UK before stopping in U.S. cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and, of course, N.Y.C.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m.

In January, Ice Spice confirmed that she’d nearly finished recording her forthcoming album, which is inspired by her Jan. 1, 2000 birthdate, during an appearance on TODAY . “Yes, there’s going to be an album this year,” she announced along with the Y2K title. “It’s almost finished, so I’m really excited.”

At the time, the “Barbie World” rap star didn’t elaborate too much on details but shared that she “of course” has some collaborations on the record.

“I have a crazy collaboration that just got locked in, like, two days ago,” she teased, playfully rolling her Rs on “crazy” for emphasis.

Ice Spice dropped the first hint about Y2K back in November when she posted photos of herself on Instagram showing off a lower back tattoo. “Y2K! ?/?/24,” she captioned the post.

Since then, the Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj collaborator has dropped breadcrumbs of what fans can expect to hear on her forthcoming album with singles like “ Think U the S— (Fart) ” and “Gimme a Light,” the latter of which the rapper premiered during her debut Coachella performance in April.

Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about the song last month, Ice Spice admitted she was “nervous” about putting out the RIOTUSA-produced single, which samples Sean Paul’s 2002 hit of the same name, because of how “iconic” the original is.

“You know Sean Paul, he’s legendary, and that song alone, his ‘Gimme the Light,’ is so iconic, I was so nervous to sample it,” the rapper shared, “‘cause I’m like, ‘This isn’t going to get cleared, so what’s the point?’”

Thankfully, she said the track did get cleared, and she’s grateful because “we really wanted to have a very authentic Y2K sample” featured on the new album.

According to FOX 5 New York , Ice Spice commemorated her album’s rollout last month by selling 50,000 Ice Spice MetroCards across N.Y.C. They were made available at subway stations located in the Bronx and Manhattan.

Recently, Ice Spice hopped on the remix of Cobain’s hit song “Fisherrr" featuring Bay Swag. The trio also put out a music video for the track set in her native New York City.

Following the release of her debut album, Ice Spice will appear in Spike Lee's next film , a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 thriller High and Low starring Denzel Washington.

Y2K drops on Friday, July 26. See the rapper's full tour dates below.

Alan Jackson expands Last Call: One More for the Road tour with 10 new shows: See the dates

rap tour announcement

Alan Jackson is going out with a bang. The country music icon has added a new set of shows to his ongoing Last Call: One More for the Road farewell tour.

The Country Music Hall of Famer , 65, announced Thursday his plans to continue his Last Call: One More for the Road tour, which played to standing-room-only crowds in sold-out arenas coast-to-coast in 2022.

Jackson’s 2024-2025 tour will play an initial list of 10 arenas across the U.S., with each show marking the last time he’ll ever perform in that city and surrounding areas.

“I’ve been touring for over 30 years — my daughters are all grown, we have one grandchild and one on the way," Jackson said in a statement. "I’m enjoying spending more time at home. But my fans always show up to have a good time, and I’m going to give them the best show I can for this Last Call."

The three-time CMA Entertainer of the Year will play his final tour as he continues to live with Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a chronic neuropathy condition that he first revealed in 2021 . The disorder has affected his ability to move and keep balance onstage.

“Fans know when they come to my shows, they’re going to hear the songs that made me who I am — the ones they love,” Jackson said in his tour announcement.
