8 Northern Ireland Whiskey Distilleries You Have To Visit

Irish whiskey is really having a moment, and for many good reasons. There is something so special about how we Irish blend and brew our smooth, rich whiskies. Did you know there are 39 operational whiskey distilleries on the little island of Ireland? That is quite a lot for a small island, wouldn’t you say?

Now, if you didn’t know already, the actual island of Ireland is split into two countries . The Republic of Ireland, where the famous Dublin capital can be found, and Northern Ireland, our still British sister whose capital is Belfast city.

If you have the time, I recommend you do a real whiskey tour of both countries but if you only have time to zoom around the Northern Ireland whiskey trail, there is still plenty of whiskey fun to be had.

Is Whiskey From Northern Ireland Considered Irish Whiskey?

Is Whiskey From Northern Ireland Considered Irish Whiskey

Look, the raging battle between the British and Irish has been pretty much quelled – bar a few bad feeling harborers – and the Irish do not hold many grudges. Northern Ireland is still Ireland, so of course, any Northern Ireland whiskey crafted in the six counties of the North is still thought of as Irish whiskey .

I mean, look at it this way, it is in the exact spelling of whiskey . The Irish love a little flare, which is why our whiskey spelling adds an extra if not necessarily needed, E., Unlike the Scots, who like to keep it simple without adding the extra E.

If Northern Irish whiskey was not considered Irish, do you think we would spell it that way?

Also, we love to shout from the rooftops about our Irish accolades and if that includes boosting the ego of our Northern Irish brothers and sisters, you can bet we are going to do it.

What Whiskey Is Made In Northern Ireland?

Ireland’s east coast features a plethora of whiskey distilleries, many of which include a tour or two to get you in touch with the whiskey roots of Ireland.

What Whiskey Is Made In Northern Ireland

But, if you mean what famous whiskey is made in Northern Ireland? Well, I can tell you that one.

Bushmills distillery is one of the most famous Northern Irish whiskey distilleries. Some say it is the best Irish whiskey, but you must discover it yourself.

Considered the oldest licensed distillery in the world, Bushmills really is a rare gem, and the Irish are very proud of it. Plus it is located near the UNESCO world heritage site , the Giants Causeway.

But don’t stop there. Bushmills isn’t the only whiskey worth savoring when you visit Northern Ireland. There are around 13 Irish whiskey distilleries, each with its own flavor notes and histories and they are all well worth a visit if you are a lover of whiskey.

What Distilleries Are In Northern Ireland That You Can Visit?

So, you’re planning a trip around Northern Ireland’s whiskey trail and want to know every whiskey stop you need to see. I have covered you with a list of the eight must-visit Northern Irish Whiskey distilleries, from award-winning brands to distilleries located at the very northern tip of the country.

Let’s get your whiskey vacation off to an awesome start.

8 Northern Ireland Whiskey Distilleries You Have To Visit

1. Hinch Distillery, Ballynahinch

Only a short stop south of Belfast city, Hinch distillery can be found on the rather scenic Killaney Estate. Winner of the best tourism experience at Tourism Northern Ireland’s Giant Spirit Awards in 2022, their tasting tours aren’t to be missed.

One of Ireland’s newest distilleries, the Hinch Distillery has made a real impact on the Irish Whiskey scene. Their triple-distilled whiskey used malted barley and water from the Mourne Mountains, alongside traditional mashing processes, to create a really recognisable whiskey.

Plus, if you have a travel companion who is more of a gin-fellow, they will love Hinch Distillery because they also craft an award-winning Irish gin, Ninth Wave.

  • Classic Tour – £21.50 per person
  • Premium Tour – £32
  • Hinch Gin School Experience – £50

2. The Echlinville Distillery, Newtownards

Founded in 2013, Echlinville Distillery can be found in the Ards Peninsula of County Down. Echlinville prides itself on still crafting its excellent Irish whiskeys, poitín, and gin with the old traditional methods.

Bishop Robert Echlin, who travelled from Fife, Scotland in 1613, founded the Echlinville Estate where the distillery is now situated, near the impressive Echlinville Manor House. This Irish distillery is surrounded by all the history you could ask for to create a truly memorable experience.

The Echlinville spirits are crafted using the barley that is grown on the working farm and malted by hand on the estate. They credit the unique micro-climate and rich soil of the Ards Peninsula for their premium spirits and their unique flavourful taste.

With a range of tour experiences available, you can immerse yourself in the aromas of wood and whiskey as you see how their single malt whiskey and pot still whiskey are crafted in their cask warehouse. Don’t forget to have a good taste of their wares, they really are something special.

Keep an eye out on their social media accounts for special events that may fall during your holiday.

  • Tour & Tipple – £20 per person
  • Spirits & Cheese – £40 per person

3. Bushmills Distillery, Bushmills

Not only the oldest working distillery in Northern Ireland, but Bushmills distillery is also the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. Founded in 1608 and named after the mills that could be found all along the River bush, this historical distillery was the first whiskey brand in Ireland.

Situated along the famous causeway coastal route in County Antrim, you could squeeze both Bushmills distillery and a trip to the famous Giants Causeway in one single day.

Disaster struck many times. First was the tax imposed on people distilling across Ireland in 1805. However, Bushmills powered through, keeping their quality of ingredients at the very heart of production even when others switched from barley grain to untaxed grains like corn.

In 1885, the old Bushmills distillery was destroyed by fire but this did not quell the Bushmill’s passion. They soon rebuilt their factory, the very factory you can visit today.

To this day, Bushmills Irish whiskey distillery has expanded its range from its Bushmills original single malt whiskey to include its aged Causeway collection, 21-year-old whiskey, Irish whiskey blends, and American oak cask finished whiskey to name just a few.

Bushmills is an Irish legend and the Bushmills whiskey brand can now be found worldwide.

  • Distillery Tour From £15
  • Premium Tour & Tasting – From £40 per person

4. The Copeland Distillery, Donaghadee

Another distillery on the coastal causeway, it seems as though this particular area of Northern Ireland is well-loved by its whiskey distillers, The Copeland distillery is located in the historic harbour of Donaghadee in County Down. Its story is relatively short, having been founded in 2016, but the Copeland Distillery has already made its mark.

To create a truly unique aged tipple, they offer a unique blend of three Irish whiskeys within their merchants quay Irish whiskey – grain whiskey, double distilled, and triple distilled.

But they haven’t stopped there. They also produce flavoured gins as well as a variety of cask-aged rums. The values of the Copeland distillery shine through as they want to celebrate the heritage of the Copeland Islands area while creating innovative spirits.

Even though they are the new kids on the block, they offer a pretty robust tour where you can learn about the botanicals they use, have a taste of their gins and watch their unique distilling process.

The Copeland Distillery also has its single malt Irish whiskeys currently in production, due for release in 2024.

  • The Copeland Experience – £20 per person

5. Wild Atlantic Distillery, Castlederg

The last five years have been an incredible time of innovation in the Irish Whiskey industry and the Wild Atlantic Distillery in County Tyrone is one distiller that has been making some noise. Although better known by the masses for their single bottles of wild Atlantic gin, this distillery also crafts a beautifully aged whiskey for a premium tasting only. That is until its whiskey has aged perfectly for sale because this distillery only opened its doors in 2020.

That’s right unless you are willing to crack out almost £5k for an entire cask of the stuff or join their exclusive 1921 whiskey club, tasting their luxury whiskey can be a little tricky. Unless you visit the distillery and take part in one of their fabulous tours.

The Wild Atlantic Distillery wants to bring whiskey production back to the area for the first time in over 100 years and their aged whiskey won’t be ready till 2024.

Brothers Brian and Jim Nash have got their teeth into something special, using locally sourced ingredients for their spirits and you can join the fun with their tour.

  • Distillery Tour – £45 per person
  • Cocktail Class – £95 per person
  • Gin School – £95 per person

6. Rademon Estate Distillery, Downpatrick

Situated on one of Ireland’s most historic estates that date back as early as 565AD, Rademon Estate Distillery opened the doors of its glass distillery in 2013 and is surrounded by a rich and impressive history. Run by founder and head distiller David Boyd-Armstrong and his wife, Fiona, the Rademon Distillery really is a family affair.

Although Rademon Estate Distillery is better known for its award-winning Shortcross gin, it launched its first Irish single malt whiskey in 2021, called Shortcross Single Malt. Each bottle of spirits is hand-poured at Rademon and is finished with its signature sealing wax that gives it a really traditional feel.

Rademon Estate Distillery offers three different tour options and you can create your very own personalised label and a hand-dipped bottle of gin or whiskey.

  • Whiskey Tasting & Tour – £25.50 per person
  • Gin Tasting & Tour – £25.50 per person
  • Whiskey Discovery & Tour – £49.50

7. Killowen Distillery, Newry

Nestled in the middle of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, the Killowen Distillery uses the old-fashioned process of heating over a fire to give their traditional spirits their warmth and full-bodied flavour. Founder Brendan Carty wants to revive this traditional distilling technique and Killowen Distillery is the only business in Northern Ireland that uses these traditional methods.

Crafting their whiskey in small batches and aged for five years in bourbon casks, Killowen Irish whiskey is smooth, balanced, and rich. Although their chosen distilling processes take a lot of time, this gives the whiskey the time it needs to develop its distinct taste.

But it’s not just whiskey they produce. Along with rum and gin, Killowen Distillery produces a classic and traditional Irish spirit, poitín, a potato-based spirit.

Although they only have one tour of their distillery on offer, the tour is very well-rounded. You get an in-depth look at local native botanical crops, the history that changed and impacted their use, the types of distillation the company uses, and even enjoy some delicious samples of their new make whiskeys and gin.

  • Tour & Tasting – £36 per person

8. Mourne Dew Distillery, Rostrevor

Proud to be the first legal distillery to actually operate in the Mourne Mountains after centuries of the art and tradition being absent, Mourne Dew Distillery is another premium distillery based in this wild and beautiful mountain range.

Launching its first gin in 2018, Mourne Dew has gone on to expand their ranges to classic whiskeys and the national drink of Ireland, poitín. One of their most popular whiskeys is the triple-distilled Irish whiskey that has a soft and mellow vanilla and toffee palette.

Unlike the other distilleries I’ve chosen for this list, the Mourne Dew Distillery doesn’t give you a tour of where they make their magic. Instead, they have two different experiences held in one of Ireland’s oldest pubs, Fearons Bar in Rostrevor.

Learn about the history of Irish spirits and how poitín became the national drink of Ireland. You will also get to enjoy a selection of cocktails crafted with their premium spirits.

  • Whiskey & Poitín: Spirits of Fire and Rebellion – £25 per person
  • The Glorious Gin Revolution: 1688 and All That – £25 per person

Great compilation of these distilleries, Natasha, by any chance. Do you know at which distillery the new Old Oak Whiskey is distilled and bottled?

Boatyard Distillery, County Fermanagh

A disused boathouse is the headquarters of the Boatyard Distillery located along the beautiful Lough Erne in County Fermanagh.

This family-owned business is the first legal distillery in the county since 1890.

The company was founded in 2016 by Joe McGirr, who spent years in the spirits industry in Scotland, before returning to his native county.

Boatyard’s spirits are very much products of the land.

Common ingredients include the deciduous shrub sweet gale (known to have been drunk by the Vikings before they went into battle!) and frequently used as a botanical in its signature gin .

Organic wheat, grown in Ireland, contributes to its popular vodka brand .

The region’s unique microclimate, together with its rich soil and saline air contributes to the end result, which includes malting grain the old-fashioned way on the distillery’s malting floor.

Every grain is repeatedly washed, dried, and then turned over by hand and shovel just like it was done years ago.

Killowen Distillery, County Down

This County Down distillery is renowned for its use of worm tub condensers and flame-fed whiskey stills, which are affectionately known as Christoir and Broc.

This old-fashioned process of heating whiskey over a fire instead of steam is what helps give this distillery’s traditional spirits a more full-bodied taste.

Owner Brendan Carty is obsessed with reviving this old tradition, making Killowen the only distillery in Northern Ireland to use this method.

He is hoping that the nearby mountainous Mourne-Gullion-Strangford region, which UNESCO is considering a Global Geopark, will bolster his business and bring new visitors to this unique distillery.

The UNESCO nomination is being considered in May 2023.

On a guided 1 to 2-hour distillery tour, you will learn about this unique process that is used to create Killowen’s gin , poitín , and pot-still Irish whiskey . A tasting of Killowen spirits follows the tour.

The company, which is the smallest distillery on the island of Ireland, also makes rum and liqueurs. Tours are £36 per person.

Sitting on 500 acres of land dating back 1,400 years ago, the Rademon Estate Distillery is part of Northern Ireland’s oldest and most historic estates.

These days, the Rademon Estate Distillery is known for producing its award-winning Shortcross Gin , the first craft gin to be produced in the province.

Wild Atlantic Distillery, County Tyrone

A chance discovery of 200 19 th -century whiskey bottles in an old building in County Tyrone was the beginning of the Wild Atlantic Distillery journey, founded by Brian and Jim Nash.

Their business continues the line of independent whiskey makers in County Tyrone, including this rare find, which researchers believe was most likely distilled in the area and soon after, hidden away.

The haul represents a time when whiskey in Ireland was made not only by large urban distilleries but also by small illicit distilleries, particularly in rural areas.

As their name suggests, the beautiful northern coast inspires the creation of Wild Atlantic Distillery’s traditionally crafted spirits, including their popular Wild Atlantic Gin .

The gin’s makeup of botanicals such as organic sugar, kelp, and dulse is inspired by the Porcupine Bank, an area of the Irish shelf that is located about 120 miles off the west coast of Ireland.

Wild Atlantic Distillery’s vodka is infused with Amalfi lemons and inspired by Queen Maeve of Connaught.

The company’s whiskey is made and produced using locally sourced ingredients and matured in bourbon, sherry, port, wine, and rum casks.

FULL NORTHERN IRELAND WHISKEY TRAIL PROGRAMME

This morning we take you by road from the capital of the Republic of Ireland into Northern Ireland which forms part of the United Kingdom. Your Whiskey Expert Host will pick you up at your hotel in Dublin and in executive transport, you depart for the north. After crossing the border into Northern Ireland, we’re only a short distance from our first stop – Killowen Small Batch Distillery (or alternatively – Hinch Distillery).

Killowen Distillery is the creation of Brendan Carty who travelled across the globe for years and learned the secret to distilling premium Irish Whiskey.

Located in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, Killowen Distillery has a cult following that describe it as a ‘true distillery’. Seated at the slopes of Knock Shee (the Fairy Mountain), the path to the distillery is the path smugglers took during the Napoleonic Wars to bring French brandy into the North of Ireland and until recently was a perfect hideout for local poitín makers (moonshiners). Today you can experience the craftmanship behind this once illicit spirit making for yourself with an intimate ‘meet the maker’ tour and tasting experience.

Brendan is a busy man making whiskey! If he is unavailable on your desired day, we’ll travel a little bit further up the road and we’ll visit  Hinch Distillery , located in the beautiful grounds of Killaney Estate, in Co. Down.

kilbroney distillery

THE BEST OF COUNTY DOWN

After lunch we’ll take you to another County Down Distillery. We might call to Rademon Distillery – home of Shortcross gin & Single Malt Whiskey where you’ll meet Owners David and Fiona Boyd-Armstrong and sample their delicious Shortcross Gin and their much celebrated recently released whiskey.

Rademon Distillery

OR, ALTERNATIVELY...

Depending on availability, instead of Rademon, we may take you on a ferry from Strangford that will connect us with the Ards Peninsula, a most beautiful part of Ireland. We soon arrive at Echlinville Distillery, the first newly licensed whiskey distillery in Northern Ireland in over 125 years.

We’ll have a quick look at the facility which is a proper bona fide ‘field to glass’ distillery. All the barley is grown onsite and their whiskey is maturing in their onsite warehouse. We finish in the impressive Echlinville manor house for two samples of their flagship whiskeys (or gin).

Or! We might go to Donaghadee, a lovely coastal town at the top of the Ards Peninsula to The Copeland Distillery – while in County Down, we have no shortage of choice!  . In the early evening, we’ll check you in at your 5***** city centre hotel and you can enjoy the wonderful city of Belfast this evening at your leisure. We will guide you on where you should check out for dinner and drinks – the pubs of Commercial Court are an absolute must!

Note – if you have a preference for which distilleries you’d like us to book on Day 1 in Down, do let us know but please note – it’s all strictly dependent on availability.

echlinville

Enjoy a full Irish breakfast at your leisure, in your hotel. Today, we’re travelling north out of the city to the Antrim coast road – the famous Causeway Coastal Route – one of the most beautiful driving routes in the country. After just a quick hour, we’ll make our first stop at the picturesque village of Ballymena where we invite to stretch your legs at The Londonderry Arms Hotel, a former home of former British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. Maybe enjoy an Irish Coffee here in the hotel’s cosy Arkle Whiskey Bar!

derryarms

Before we hit today’s highlight, we visit a UNESCO world heritage site – The Giant’s Causeway, one of the most unique places in Europe. It’s an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. The scientists will tell you the rock formations are the result of a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago. The locals believe differently however, they’ll tell you the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant – the Irish legend, Finn MacCool. We’ll let you take it all in and decide for yourself! Enjoy the site at leisure and enjoy some lunch while you’re there! Just two minutes down the road, dating all the way back to 1608 AD,  Old Bushmills Distillery is the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

Visit the home of the third biggest selling Irish whiskey in the world, and what’s more you’re visiting the oldest distillery in the world! You’ll be led on a tour through the distillery buildings before finishing up in the Distillers Rooms for a very special extended whiskey tasting which includes all whiskeys from their range – everything from standard Bushmills Original to 21 year old single malt!

Time for shopping at Old Bushmills retail store. And then sit back, relax, and we’ll have you back in downtown Dublin in 2.5 hours.

Finding Whiskey Along The Northern Ireland Whiskey Trail

  • by John Callely
  • May 25, 2021

It’s no secret that Irish whiskey is on fire around the globe! On the island of Ireland there are currently 39 operational distilleries which is incredible when you look back to 10 years ago, when there were only four Irish whiskey distilleries total. Geographically, the island of Ireland is split into 32 counties; 26 counties are in the Republic of Ireland and 6 counties make up Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland forms part of the United Kingdom.

There are 13 distilleries / whiskey companies in Northern Ireland and in this piece, I want to take you on a journey through the beautiful North, taking in some of these ‘whiskey stops’ along the way. So let’s imagine that you have flown into Dublin (the capital in the Republic of Ireland). A motorway links Dublin Airport with the North. After a short hour we have crossed the border into Northern Ireland and one of the first cities we meet is Newry.

Matt D’Arcy , based in Newry, has been revived after a century. Established in 1817 before closing in 1918, 2020 saw the relaunch of the brand.  The company’s longer-term plan is to re-establish a working distillery on the original D’Arcy site in the heart of Newry city.  The project will also include a visitor’s centre, Victorian bar and restaurant.

Matt D’Arcy has picked up an impressive set of awards since its relaunch.  Their super premium 17 year old single malt rum cask finish was voted best Irish whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits competition in 2020.  This was then repeated at the Las Vegas International Whiskey Competition.  The 10 year old blend port finish picked up gold and silver medals at these awards too.

Bushmills distillery

Just 10 minutes down the road, Mourne Dew Distillery is located in Warrenpoint in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains , where they produce a multi-award winning range of spirits. They are big into R&D and have developed cold distillation processes unique to their distillery. They are also actively involved with the Queen’s University of Belfast in researching maturation techniques and wood policies for  their whiskeys and poitins.

Their whiskey offerings include a whiskey blended from grain whiskey matured in bourbon, virgin oak and rye casks with a hint of peated malt spirit, and a single malt whiskey finished in IPA casks with a peaty finish. They are available in the USA through Anthem Imports in Georgia.

Another quick journey down the road brings us to Killowen Distillery , which has a cult following that describe it as a ‘true distillery.’ Seated at the slopes of Knock Shee (the Fairy Mountain), the path to the distillery is the path smugglers took during the Napoleonic Wars to bring French brandy into the North of Ireland and until recently was a perfect hideout for local poitín makers (moonshiners). Today you can experience the craftsmanship behind this once illicit spirit making for yourself with an intimate ‘meet the maker’ tour and tasting experience.

A stunning 40 minute coastal drive brings us to our hotel tonight – Slieve Donard Resort and Spa stands in six acres of immaculate private grounds. A golden strand of beach borders one side while the mighty Royal County Down Golf Links frames the other. This lovingly maintained Victorian hotel is now home to one of Europe’s finest resort spas – relax and treat yourself!

Ardbeg Looks Back On The Millennium With The Ardbeg Vintage Y2K

The first whiskey stop the next day is Rademon Distillery , home of Shortcross gin & single malt whiskey. Set on a century’s old estate, Fiona and David are making a multi award winning Irish gin at Rademon – Shortcross Gin. The distillery tour with Head Distiller at Rademon, David Boyd-Armstrong, is not to be missed. He will tell you all about their plans for their whiskey coming very soon. The tour ends in the tastings bar for a very cool Shortcross Gin & Tonic Masterclass.

A quick 20-minute drive will see us at Strangford, a quaint village at the mouth of Strangford Lough. Here we take a quick ferry crossing to Portaferry and we are now embarking on a beautiful driving route along the Ards Peninsula enjoying spectacular views out over Strangford Lough.

Echlinville Distillery is set in the heart of rural farmland on the peninsula. It is a proper bona fide ‘field to glass’ distillery. All the barley used in the production of their whiskeys is grown onsite, they do their own malting and a personal highlight of the visit for me is always the chance to step inside the maturation warehouse. We finish in the impressive Echlinville manor house for two samples of their flagship whiskeys – the guys at Echlinville have very successfully resurrected the one-time world famous Dunvilles Irish Whiskey.

Continuing to the top of the peninsula we come to The Copeland Distillery , situated on Ireland’s East Coast. They are a craft producer of Irish gin, rum, single malt and pot still whiskey. Ahead of their whiskeys being released in 2024, look out for Merchants’ Quay Irish Whiskey – a unique blend of three Irish whiskeys aged in four different casks (launched May 2021)

Day Three is quite special – a breathtaking coastal drive will take you all the way to the home of Bushmills Irish Whiskey. We’re travelling north out of Belfast to the famous Causeway Coastal Route – one of the most beautiful driving routes in the country. We arrive at the very northern tip of Ireland and start with a visit to a UNESCO world heritage site – The Giant’s Causeway – one of the most unique places in Europe.

Just two minutes down the road, dating all the way back to 1608 AD, Old Bushmills Distillery is the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Today, you will tour the historical distillery. Famed for its range of single malt Irish whiskeys, you will have the chance to try them during a premium tasting in the very impressive Master Distiller’s tasting rooms. Included in the tasting is; Bushmills Original & Red, Black Bush, Bushmills 10, 16 & 21 year old single malts. You also compare with a Scotch and a bourbon. Finally, you’ll try their 12 year old reserve in the bar – exclusive to Old Bushmills.

John Callely

I’ve been working in whiskey tourism from the early age of 16 when I worked weekends in the Jameson visitor centre in Dublin. I worked fulltime in Irish tourism for 10+ years and it’s only when I saw what was coming down the tracks in terms of new distilleries opening I started planning for Whiskey Island , a premium tour company offering escorted whiskey trails nationwide, allowing visitors to Ireland sample our many new delicious Irish whiskeys at their birthplace while discovering lot’s of essential Ireland along the way!

Killowen Distillery

Craft Irish Single Pot Still Distillery based in the Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland.

Passionate, Transparent Distillate from the Mourne Mountains.

Traditional spirit contemporary twist, from our ancient mourne mountain home, killowen is part of a new batch of distillers helping ireland take its rightful place among the most awarded spirits in contemporary distilling..

Using time-honoured, historical – albeit time-consuming processes – allows Killowen’s unique flavour profile to echo the historical international whiskeys of choice;  ones that were distinctively ‘Irish’. Meaning our highly sought-after Irish product can rightfully be held in high esteem once again.

Our two handmade artisan pot stills, named Christoir (1000 litre) and Broc (800 litre), are flame fed and our condensers are worm tub. We believe the ancient still shape, size, flame heat and worm tub condensation help create a traditional spirit with a contemporary twist.

Our SPIRITS

Constantly experimenting to blend old traditions and the finest natural resources to produce world class craft spirits., a warm welcome awaits you…, at our mourne mountain home, where stunning scenery meets the best in new irish distilling, stay up to date with all the latest news & releases..

Discover a world of spirits in Northern Ireland

28 May 2024

PRESS PACK (4.67mb) COPY

A new Spirit Trail and Distillery Passport experience is encouraging visitors to discover the range, quality and unique character of Northern Ireland’s spirits

The Spirit Trail is a guide to 14 unique distillery-led experiences across Northern Ireland. It’s an invitation to meet the characters and see the passion behind each brand as well as a chance to sample a broad range of spirits to find your new favourite. At any one of the stops on the trail you can pick up a passport and have it stamped as you visit each distillery. Anyone who collects 14 stamps will be given a special souvenir gift. Alternatively, scan the QR code on display at Belfast International Airport’s duty-free store to get a digital passport and information on the trail, so you’re ready to go as soon as you land in Northern Ireland.      Visitors to Belfast will be able to visit three distilleries on the trail that are based in the city. Enjoy a two-hour Make Your Own Gin experience at the Belfast Artisan Gin School or, if whiskey is more to your taste, head to McConnell’s Distillery, the newest arrival on the Northern Ireland distillery scene, where you can combine a tour of the distillery with a tour of historic Crumlin Road Gaol within which it is located. Similarly, a visit to Titanic Belfast, a must-see in the city, can be followed by a tour of nearby Titanic Distillers located in the Titanic Pumphouse.   Within easy reach of Belfast are Hinch Distillery and Rademon Estate, home of Shortcross Gin. Both offer fascinating behind-the-scenes tours of their ultra-modern distilleries. On a trip down the picturesque Ards Peninsula you can taste craft whiskey, gin and rum at the Copeland Distillery while hearing stories of smugglers and seafaring exploits. Further down the peninsula is Echlinville, a family-run field-to-glass distillery and home of award-winning Dunville’s Irish whiskey.  In Northern Ireland’s beautiful Mourne Mountains you’ll find the smallest distillery on the trail, Killowen, where you can taste a range of artisan spirits. See where it all began for Jameson’s whiskey

Jameson Distillery, Dublin city

They may not make whiskey here anymore, but at the Jameson Distillery Bow St., you’ll get an amazing story, a taste of this exceptionally smooth whiskey and a good look at how it all comes together in this triple distillation process (hence the extra "e")! Check out the Whiskey Makers Experience and blend your own, or perhaps opt for the Whiskey Shakers Masterclass. Just imagine the stories you can tell your friends when you head back home… If you have more time, drop into the Irish Whiskey Museum for a tour that will take you through the dramatic story of Irish whiskey through the ages.

Roe & Co, Dublin city

whiskey-trail-roeandco

Named for George Roe, the man who helped bring about the golden age of Irish whiskey in the 19th century, Roe & Co Distillery is one of Dublin’s coolest whiskey distilleries. Nearly a hundred years after the original distillery closed its gate in 1926, Roe & Co reopened, taking advantage of the renewed interest in Irish whiskey to start producing its mellow blended whiskey, aged in bourbon casks. Expect a fun and interactive experience on your tour where you can learn about blending techniques, mixology and the science of distilling.

A new distillery with an old legacy.

Teeling Whiskey Distillery, Dublin city

whiskey-trail-teelings

The Teeling Whiskey Distillery was the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years, but the Teeling family is not new to the business. They have been distilling whiskey since 1782, when one Walter Teeling set up a craft distillery in the Liberties area of Dublin. Rekindling the family’s love affair with whiskey, Jack and Stephen Teeling have brought a sense of real innovation to the family brand. And while they’re doing that, everyone’s invited to discover Teeling spirits on the engaging distillery tour.

Dublin Liberties Distillery, Dublin city

whiskey-trail-dublin-liberties

You can plan a whole whiskey trip and never have to leave Dublin – that’s how varied the city’s whiskey offering is. If you want to extend your stay, then make time to stop in Pearse Lyons Distillery, based in the restored St James’ Church. You can admire beautiful stained glass windows while enjoying a fascinating tour around the 12th century church and graveyard. On the distillery tour, you'll learn about the history of whiskey making in Dublin and meet Mighty Molly and Little Lizzie, two copper stills from Kentucky that help distil Pearse’s first-class whiskeys. If you’re still not satisfied, try one of the city’s newest establishments, The Dublin Liberties Distillery where you can explore its production process before sampling its award-winning whiskeys at the Tasting Bar.

Reviving ancient traditions in the Boyne Valley

whiskey-trail-slane

With fertile soil and pristine waters, the Boyne Valley is an ideal spot for distilling whiskey. In the past, several distilleries called this picturesque region home, but all eventually closed down. Now, Slane Distillery is bringing whiskey back to the Boyne Valley for a new generation. Learn all about the whiskey-making process on the distillery tour and try a tutored tasting of the triple casked Slane Irish whiskey. You can finish there, or for a fee, delve into the colourful history of Slane Castle on a guided tour.

Kilbeggan Whiskey Distillery, County Westmeath

whiskey-trail-kilbeggan

It’s all about seeing, smelling and tasting at Kilbeggan Distillery Experience. Built in 1757, it was the powerhouse of whiskey production until it closed in 1957. But thanks to a community of determined volunteers, it sprang to life again in 2007 and now produces an incredible 250,000 bottles of smooth, blended whiskey every year. Check out the creaking timber water wheel and giant steam engine – all the workings of the distillation process preserved since the 1800s. Only a short drive away, you'll find the Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre, named after stable boy turned distillery owner, Daniel E. Williams who opened the distillery in 1829. The full tour takes you through each stage of the whiskey-making, and even gives you the chance to create your own unique blend. If you have more time, head east to the Old Mill House on the Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow. Here, at Powerscourt Distillery, you can feel the passion for tradition as you walk around the faithfully restored barn – the bell that originally called the estate’s workers to lunch still hangs on the wall. Learn all about the history of the estate and the processes that drive master distiller, Noel Sweeney.

Ballykeefe, County Kilkenny

whiskey-trail-ballykeefe

Centuries ago, many small family farms combined agriculture and distilling. Thanks to the passion of Morgan Ging, Ballykeefe Distillery became the first distillery in Ireland to revive this old tradition of growing and distilling barley at the same location. Take a tour at Ballykeefe and you’ll be both educated on the origins of whiskey and entertained by the story of the Ging family’s passion for distilling.

Walsh Whiskey Distillery, County Carlow

The distilleries of Ireland’s Ancient East are all about the personal touch. Blackwater Distillery crafts a Single Pot Still whiskey made the traditional way, using Irish barley, oats, wheat and rye. Book a tour with Waterford Distillery and you can see how it is exploring the influence of Irish terroir on its whiskey. Then head up to County Carlow and visit the Walsh Distillery, where the Walsh family handcrafts whiskeys using both pot stills and column stills. Fans of Irish coffee, take note: this is the home of the Hot Irishman – the perfect Irish coffee recipe in a bottle!

A skilful crafting of unique flavours

Clonakilty Distillery, County Cork

whiskey-trail-clonakilty

Surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of County Cork, the Scully family at Clonakilty Distillery nurtures and harvests the area’s unique wild botanicals, which then add to the exceptional flavours of their whiskeys. On a distillery tour, you can immerse yourself in the smells, sounds and tastes of a real working distillery. Afterwards have a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant, a showcase of West Cork’s local producers. If you have more time, linger in County Cork and head to West Cork Distillers. Inspired by the artisan food of the area, three lifelong friends have distilled a range of classic Irish whiskeys for you to try.

Dingle Distillery, County Kerry

whiskey-trail-dingle

Eclectic, quaint and really rather beautiful, Dingle is a must-visit spot on your whiskey journey! At Dingle Distillery, they use three distinctive, hand-crafted copper pot stills to create what the owners call “the ultimate Irish whiskey.” And if for some strange reason you don’t fancy the whiskey when you visit, the distillery’s vodka and gin are something special, too!

Tigh Neachtain, Galway city

whiskey-trail-tigh-neachtain

Rugged, wild and laden with history, it’s no wonder the folks at Lough Mask Distillery (or as they are also known: Drioglann Loch Measc) set up their headquarters in Killateeaun in County Mayo. Producing whiskey, gin and vodka in handmade copper stills, this distillery is all about quality, not quantity. The end result is small batches of finely blended spirits. If you have more time, what could be better than a self-guided whiskey trail around Galway city? Official venues on the trail have a stone engraving at their entrance, so look out at Tigh Neachtain’s, Garavan’s Bar and more – there are 11 pubs in total on the trail.

Bushmills, County Antrim

whiskey-trail-bushmills

If you’ve been lured by the beauty of the Causeway Coastal Route – one of the best road trips in the world – then you simply can’t miss a trip to the village of Bushmills, anchored by none other than the Old Bushmills Distillery. One of the few distilleries in the world to distil, blend and bottle the whiskey under the same roof, it’s also the oldest working distillery on the island of Ireland. So historical is this place that it uses water from nearby Saint Columb’s Rill – a river that’s said to have been blessed by the saint. Maybe that’s what makes it so sweet and smooth? If you have more time, head on over to Belfast for the Whiskey Walk around Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter with Irish Whiskey Ambassador Joe Magowan. You’ll get to experience a selection of Belfast’s best whiskey bars and a whiskey cocktail demonstration.

Echlinville, County Down

In 2013, The Echlinville Distillery became the first licensed distillery in over 125 years in Northern Ireland. The people behind the venture have farmed this land for generations, so they know a little something about terroir – that mysterious term that takes in everything from soil to microclimate. Maybe that’s what enables them to produce a whiskey that is absolutely rooted in place. Learn all about the journey from field to glass on the distillery tour, and enjoy a tasting or even a selection of sweet treats on the Afternoon Tea tour.

Killowen, County Down

Thanks to the abundance of natural resources, distilleries in County Down have a history of harvesting the power of mother nature to create delicious batches of gin and whiskey. Situated in the Mourne Mountains, Killowen Distillery has perfected the science of distilling thanks to its handmade artisan stills. Harnessing natural flavours has also been the key to success of Rademon Distillery. Its Shortcross gin has won a number of awards, and its whiskey is a sure hit as well.
