  • The X-Trail N-Trek makes a comeback in Australia after a five-year absence, offering a more off-road-oriented look compared to the standard X-Trail.
  • It features a redesigned front end, blacked-out accents, exclusive 18-inch wheels, and a wider color palette with a black roof option.
  • It lacks any mechanical upgrades and relies on a non-electrified 2.5L gasoline engine with a CVT gearbox.

Nissan has unveiled a new N-Trek trim for the X-Trail in Australia, featuring a more rugged aesthetic. Making a comeback to the lineup after a five-year absence, the N-Trek edition brings a host of off-road-inspired exterior and interior upgrades to the Australian counterpart of the North American Rogue.

Beginning with the outside, the X-Trail N-Trek gains a redesigned garnish around the bumper intake, putting more emphasis on the new LED fog lights. The plastic cladding has a dark finish, matching the blacked-out mirrors, door handles, and roof rails. The N-Trek also adds a dark grille instead of the chrome finish found in other trims.

Besides the adventurous makeup, Nissan designers added a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels which are exclusive to the N-Trek. The color palette includes Gun Metallic, Champagne Silver, Ivory Pearl, Diamond Black and Ceramic Grey finishes, with some of them being available with a black roof.

In addition to its more rugged demeanor, Nissan’s design team has also crafted a fresh set of exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels. The color spectrum offers a diverse range of options, including Gun Metallic, Champagne Silver, Ivory Pearl, Diamond Black, and Ceramic Grey finishes, with select choices offering a black roof option.

Unlike its U.S. counterpart, the Nissan Rogue, which has undergone a mid-cycle facelift , the X-Trail has yet to receive such updates. However, despite this delay, being that it was introduced two years later, it already featured the larger digital cockpit. Based on the mid-spec ST-L trim, the N-Trek edition comes loaded with features, including dual 12.3-inch screens, a 10.8-inch heads-up display, and the ProPilot safety suite as standard.

Nissan Rogue Gets Rugged Down Under With New X-Trail N-Trek

The standout feature of the N-Trek’s cabin is the new synthetic leather upholstery with “water-resistant qualities”. This means that occupants don’t need to worry if their outfit got wet during sporty activities in the outdoors. As with the rest of the X-Trail lineup , the N-Trek is available in five- and seven-seater configurations.

Despite the more outdoor-ish look, the X-Trail N-Trek doesn’t come with any performance or chassis enhancements. Unlike other Australian-spec trims of the X-Trail, it doesn’t offer the e-Power hybrid powertrain option. Instead, it’s powered by a non-electrified 2.5-liter gasoline engine, delivering 181 horsepower (135 kW / 184 PS) and 244 Nm (180 lb-ft) of torque, channeled to either the front (2WD) or all four wheels (4WD) solely through a CVT gearbox.

Unlike the previous generation of the Nissan X-Trail N-Trek that was offered in a limited number of 500 units back in 2019, the new model is widely available in the Australian market as the “adventurous” trim of the lineup. Pricing starts from AU$ 47,290 (US$ 30,782) for the five-seater 2WD model and from AU$ 50,390 ($US 32,798) for the seven-seater 4WD.

N-TREK Warrior driving down hill

Melbourne, Australia (9 October, 2019) –  Nissan Australia has developed an exclusive halo version of its popular Navara - the Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior - featuring a range of engineering enhancements and changes that deliver the most stylish and capable Navara ever.

With customers moving towards higher spec utes with enhanced capabilities, functionality and styling, Nissan Australia worked with automotive product development and engineering experts, Premcar, to develop, engineer, manufacture and validate a halo grade Navara – which sits above the Nissan Navara N-TREK.

Based off the Nissan Navara N-TREK Dual Cab Pickup 4WD, and including the recently announced series four updates - including the new 8-inch infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® - Premcar delved deep under the metal to enhance the suspension, including off-road capable springs and dampers, resulting in a 15mm lift to the vehicle. Adding 32.2-inch Cooper All-Terrain tyres increases ride height by a further 25mm – for a total 40mm lift.

Hiring 40 people – with engineering and local manufacturing experience – to work exclusively on N-TREK Warrior, and establishing a dedicated manufacturing facility in Epping, in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, Premcar sourced a range of parts from top tier OEM level suppliers, including a hoopless body colour steel bullbar with integrated 470mm LED light bar, to toughen up the look of the exterior.

“The market has shifted considerably in the last two years with ute sales leading the way, but ute buyers are looking for a higher level of specification that deliver both capable and functional improvements, while making their vehicle stand out,” said Nissan Australia managing director Stephen Lester.

“The Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior is locally designed and engineered for Australian conditions. We expect this to be a popular variant.”

Suspension & tyre changes The Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior incorporates a number of updates to the suspension via the springs, dampers and front jounce bumpers, that not only help lift the vehicle by 40mm, but make this vehicle unique to Australia.

The initial focus was on lifting the front and rear suspension and including a larger diameter 32.2 -inch all-terrain tyre to enhance the Navara’s off-road capabilities and better negotiate rougher terrain.

Nissan’s approach was to ensure that the suspension upgrades did not result in any reduction in vehicle attributes such as durability, safety and comfort.

To maintain the five year warranty, and Nissan’s renowned durability, the suspension changes were designed, implemented and tested to ensure that no excessive additional loads were passed into the vehicle’s chassis, and all ball joint, tie rod and drive shaft angles did not exceed the design limits.

For the N-TREK Warrior, Nissan opted for a softer primary spring for ride comfort and off road articulation, with a higher but more progressive secondary rate to maintain composure and performance – both in cornering, heavy duty off-roading, when laden and when towing.

In addition, the increased spring length takes the larger wheel and tyre further away from the body, providing ample clearance for the 32.2-inch Cooper all terrain tyres.

The dampers were upgraded from the Nissan original equipment part to provide added compression damping on top of the piston for quicker response.

The outer tube diameter is larger with greater oil volume to improve cooling and rough road capability. The piston rod diameter has been increased to improve strength.

Both front and rear dampers have a unique internal valve code tuned by Premcar to match the springs and tyres.

A comprehensive damper tuning program was carried out to lift all attributes – ride, handling, steering response, cornering balance and body control.

The updates to the suspension contribute to an overall lift of the vehicle by 40mm and result in better ride, better control in transient conditions, more control off road, more stability during both laden and unladen handling maneuvers and a better steering response.

New front jounce bumpers are larger, taller and engage the chassis rail earlier in the suspension travel, but at a more progressive rate. This controls wheel movement at maximum suspension travel and achieves a more compliant and softer transfer of energy into the chassis, significantly improving the harshness and noise transfer into the chassis and cabin over rough road conditions.

The tyres on the N-TREK Warrior are 275 /70 (32.2-inch) Coopers AT3 all-terrain tyres. This size tyre was chosen because it fits within the upper limit of what can be positioned within the wheel opening without interfering with the surrounding chassis components.

To accommodate the upsized N-TREK Warrior tyre package, Premcar modified the inner front fenders in combination with the body colour hoopless steel bullbar to provide the appropriate tyre clearance.

These tyres account for 25mm of the total 40mm lift in the N-TREK Warrior compared to the standard N-TREK and give a taller, wider, tougher stance, further improving its already tough road presence. A speedometer recalibration was performed to ensure the 56.3mm increased overall tyre diameter reflected an accurate speed reading.

The Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior maintains Navara’s 3.5 tonne towing capacity.

Local testing maintains Nissan’s 5 year warranty A critical part of the Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior development was local testing to validate the changes made to the vehicle in ensuring it meets the needs, and the intended usage, of the Australian buyer profile, and maintains the warranty requirements.

Durability testing at both the vehicle and the component level were conducted, as was thermal performance validation, Noise Vibration Harshness testing, homologation, towing, laden condition, and ESC and braking vehicle safety testing.

Premcar conducted testing in Australia, for Australia over several months on the varied road surfaces at the Australian Automotive Research Centre (AARC) for handling, on and off road, and rough road development. Outback testing at Big Desert was conducted on the sandy desert tracks, gravel and rough terrain between Ouyen, in Victoria, and Pinnaroo, on the Victorian/South Australian border. It also undertook thermal testing at Melbourne University’s Advanced Centre for Automotive Research and Testing (ACART) facility.

The results showed that Premcar was able achieve improvement or parity versus the standard Navara condition across all attributes without compromising durability and comfort. This extensive validation program has given Nissan the confidence to maintain the factory 5 year warranty.

Parts & accessories In addition to the suspension lift and all-terrain tyre changes on the Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior, the vehicle also comes with a range of features which improve both functionality and capability over and above the N-TREK model, including:

  • Hoopless, body coloured steel bullbar
  • 3mm Stainless Steel Front Underbody Protection

Established by Prodrive UK in 1996, the current owners took over in 2012 changing the company name to Premcar. The owners have been with the company through all of its history of engineering excellence.

Recently, German-based Engineering powerhouse RLE International has acquired a stake in the Premcar business. This collaboration will result in growth for both RLE International and Premcar, and will bring a new level of service and expertise to the market.

Why Premcar? Committed to developing a local halo grade Navara, Nissan Australia went through a competitive tender process, approaching several reputable design and engineering companies both locally and overseas that had second stage certification capability.

Premcar was chosen as it was able to develop a unique vehicle package that was specific to Australian market usage profile and had the experience to undertake a local development, testing and tuning program suited to Australian conditions.

It also had the mindset from the outset to develop a cohesive vehicle package that was designed and engineered to enhance the vehicle rather than focus on a simple accessory fitment initiative.

Premcar also has extensive experience working with original equipment manufacturers in the past in addition to a local market presence, knowledge, understanding and respect.

Premcar’s dedicated Nissan facilities Such is the magnitude of the Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior program, Premcar has expanded its operations and opened a 6,300 square metre production facility in Epping – Melbourne’s northern suburbs – with a production line dedicated to the manufacture of the N-TREK Warrior.

This will be supported by 40 new staff who have been employed to work exclusively on the N-TREK Warrior program, with staff working across the following departments:

The new staff have extensive manufacturer experience and in some cases have re-entered the automotive industry following the closure of widespread local automotive manufacturing several years ago.

Nissan Navara N-TREK Warrior will be on sale in early December with pricing to be announced soon.

Proposed California bill seeks to rein in fast electric bicycle speeds

Avatar for Micah Toll

If a proposed new bill eventually becomes law, higher-speed electric bicycles may soon have a tougher row to hoe in California.

Electric bicycle speeds in the state, which uses a similar three-class system as most of the US, are limited to either 20 mph (32 km/h) for Class 1 and 2 electric bicycles or 28 mph (45 km/h) for Class 3 electric bicycles.

However, because electric bicycles are relatively simple to work on, it’s fairly easy for many owners to modify some of them to go even faster. In some cases, devices are available for purchase that can help e-bike owners do just that.

California Assembly Bill 1774 seeks to limit the sale of such devices that could help e-bike riders remove speed limits on their bikes.

The proposed legislation, which recently moved out of committee and is now headed to the larger assembly, “would prohibit a person from selling a product or device that can modify the speed capability of an electric bicycle such that it no longer meets the definition of an electric bicycle.”

nissan n trek

The goal is to prevent the proliferation of illegally fast electric bicycles, which would technically fall entirely outside the legal realm of bicycles. Instead, such out-of-class e-bikes would need to be reclassed as mopeds or motorcycles, which come with heavier regulatory burdens.

Higher speeds also mean longer stopping distances and more severe injuries in the event of a crash. Proponents of the bill argue that cities and municipalities may not be equipped to handle the increased speeds on their existing bike infrastructure, potentially leading to more accidents.

Moreover, insurance and liability issues become more complicated when e-bikes exceed their intended speed limits and enter into moped or motorcycle-level classes.

ride1up CF Racer1 gravel e-bike

The bill’s goal is clear, though it might not be as effective as its authors hope. While devices that can be used to de-restrict electric bicycles do exist , they are actually quite rare in the field of e-bike hot-rodding.

It is much more common for e-bike owners to use built-in methods to remove speed limits built into the e-bikes, such as through software means, including changing user-accessible settings. There are also physical methods that don’t require any purchases, such as cutting a hidden “speed-limiting wire” or manipulating wheel magnets designed to interpret the bike’s current speed.

While the bill doesn’t directly address these types of modifications, the law that it is amending technically already makes such modifications illegal if they ultimately push the performance of the e-bike outside of the legally defined limits of electric bicycles, i.e., above either 20 or 28 mph speeds, depending on the class.

There are currently no laws in California limiting the top speed capabilities of cars or outlawing the hot-rodding of cars to travel faster than their manufacturer’s pre-designed limits.

A debate over speed

Supporters of the legislation argue that increasing the top speed of electric bicycles poses significant safety risks. Devices that override built-in speed limits can push speeds much higher, leading to dangerous situations on bike paths.

On the other hand, opponents of the bill believe that restricting the self-modification of privately owned e-bikes is an overreach that could hamper the advantages of such vehicles. They argue that many riders use faster electric bicycles responsibly and appreciate the additional power and speed for practical reasons, such as commuting over longer distances or keeping up with the speed of car traffic when forced to share the road in areas without sufficient bike lane infrastructure.

nissan n trek

Is there a middle ground to be found?

The proposed bill comes at a time when a heated discussion has already been raging about the balance between safety and transportation benefits in the e-bike industry, especially among young riders.

While the need to protect public safety is undeniable, finding a solution that also supports the growth and benefits of environmentally-conscious electric bikes will be essential. What do you think? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comment section below!

Richard Berry

The Nissan X-Trail is a family favourite mid-sized SUV and the N-Trek is a limited edition run of just 500 vehicles.

So, what makes the N-Trek different from a regular X-Trail ? Does it look any different, or come with any extra features? How much more does it cost and is worth the money?

The Nissan X-Trail N-Trek came to live with my family for a week and we discovered the  answers to these questions along with what this popular SUV is like to drive, how practical it is and how much fuel it uses.

Is there anything interesting about its design?   7/10

The X-Trail lost its boxy looks when this new-generation model arrived in 2014 with its curvy exterior, and even six years on its design has aged well and is still pleasing.

The exterior styling of the X-Trail has stood the test of time superbly.

The N-Trek adds accessories such as larger wheels, the bonnet protector and the weather shields but these are the only outward signs that this is a special edition, apart from the N-Trek badge on the tailgate, that is.

The X-Trail lost its boxy look when this new-generation model arrived in 2014 with its curvy exterior, six years on its design has aged well.

While the exterior styling has stood the test of time superbly, the X-Trail’s interior is showing its age with the 7.0-inch touchscreen looking a tad small now and the dash is busy with buttons as opposed to the cleaner designs we’re seeing in newer models.

That said, the fit and finish appears excellent and the standard leather upholstery lifts the quality to a premium feel.

Inside, the N-Trek edition kit includes door sill scuff plates and luxurious-feeling floor mats.

Allianz

How practical is the space inside?   8/10

If you were to get a group of parents of young children together to build an SUV the X-Trail is probably what they’d come up with. That’s because family practicality seems to have been at the top of the priority list.

The boot is 565L and has under floor storage.

There are the rear doors that open tall and wide at almost at 90 degrees, large cupholders in the front and back (four in total), giant door pockets, a theatre-style second row that seats the kids high so they can see out, dark-tinted rear windows so you don’t need a shade cloth, directional air vents in the back, plus a big boot (565L) that has under floor storage and a low load lip.

The seats up front are wide, and shoulder and elbow room is great.

If you’re tall or large you’ll be happy with the space up front – the seats are wide, while shoulder and elbow room is great. Those in the second row will be pleased with the X-Trail’s roominess, too. I’m 191cm tall and can sit behind my driving position with about 30mm to spare.

Those in the second row will be pleased with the X-Trail’s roominess.

The N-Trek is only available with a five-seat configuration. If you’re looking for a third row of seating the ST-L seven-seater X-Trail will do the job nicely.

Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with?   7/10

The Nissan X-Trail N-Trek special edition lists for $38,700, which is a grand more than the mid-spec ST-L grade it’s based on.

What do you get on the N-Trek that you don’t on an ST-L? There’s the larger 19-inch alloys wheels, an eight-speaker Bose stereo, bonnet protector, weather shields for the front and rear side windows, kick plates for the door sills and carpet mats.

The N-Trek comes with larger 19-inch alloys wheels.

That’s on top of all the standard equipment which the ST-L brings such as a 7.0-inch screen with sat nav , digital radio, heated front seats, leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control.

Is it good value? Well the Bose system is good, and the larger wheels look great, but rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 are offering more equipment and newer tech such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for less money.

The RAV4 GXL 4x2 for example is $35,640. Be sure to check out the front-wheel drive versions of the Renault Koleos Zen X-Tronic and Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sport, which are also more affordable.

What are the key stats for the engine and transmission?   7/10

The X-Trail N-Trek has a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 126kW/226Nm. You won’t be able to have it with a manual gearbox as only a continuously variable automatic is available with this grade. I’m not a fan of CVTs because they seem to make the engine’s torque disappear, resulting in lackluster acceleration.

How much fuel does it consume   7/10.

Nissan says the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and CVT auto in the front-wheel drive X-Trail N-Trek should use 7.9L/100km after a combination of open and urban roads.

I drove exactly 100km of open and urban roads and used 13.8L, measured at the bowser. In the X-Trail’s defence there were only 500km on the odometer, and vehicles generally use more fuel when they have less than a couple of thousand kilometres on the clock.

What's it like to drive?   7/10

The driving experience of the X-Trail N-Trek in a single word is, easy. Easy around carparks with its light steering, easy to see out of with the ride height and big windows with thin pillars, and easy in terms of the placement of controls and configuration of the seating position.

The driving experience of the X-Trail N-Trek in a single word is, easy.

It’s not perfect though. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a driver in the sporty sense, the CVT and lackluster acceleration won’t impress you. And if you’re looking for a super comfortable experience then the jiggly ride on less-than-great roads will leave you a bit disappointed.

Warranty & Safety Rating

Basic Warranty

5 years / unlimited km warranty

ANCAP Safety Rating

ANCAP logo

What safety equipment is fitted? What safety rating?   7/10

The Nissan X-Trail was given the maximum five-star ANCAP rating when it was tested in 2017 and the N-Trek comes with the same standard safety features as the ST-L. There’s AEB, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot warning.

Along with the advanced tech there’s ABS, traction and stability controls and a hill hold function.

You’ll find two ISOFIX mounts across the second row along with three top tether points for child seats.

Under the boot floor is a space saver spare wheel.

What does it cost to own? What warranty is offered?   8/10

The Nissan X-Trail N-Trek is covered by Nissan’s five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty .

Nissan provides a servicing price guide on its website which covers the first six services. Servicing is recommended every 12 months or 10,000km and you can expect to pay $234 for the first, then in subsequent years, $348, $244, $459, $254 and $377.

The Nissan X-Trail N-Trek costs a grand more than the ST-L it’s based on but you’re getting a premium stereo, larger wheels, floor mats and the weather shields which does provide better value. Don’t expect that to pay off when it comes time to sell again, however, because research shows special editions don’t command any more money than the models they’re based on when sold second hand. You’re best off enjoying the extra value now and the great practicality this family favourite offers.
