Premiere Bicycling and El Tour de Tucson announced new routes for this year's events. The 39th annual El Tour de Tucson will take place throughout the community on Saturday, November 19th.

With the new routes comes many road closures that Tucson residents should be aware of. Here are all of the road closures caused by El Tour de Tucson, according to a news release:

Cushing Street from Stone Avenue to El Paso Avenue will be closed to motorists on Friday, November 18, 2022, starting at 6 a.m.

Sixth Avenue from 22nd Street to Broadway will be closed to motorists starting Saturday at 6 a.m.

The following roads will be closed from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.:

  • Aviation Parkway eastbound from Broadway to Golf Links Road
  • Wilmot Road southbound from Golf Links Road to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base
  • Nicaragua Drive/Calle Polar/Escalante Road eastbound from Wilmot Road to Kolb Road
  • Kolb Road southbound from Escalante Road to Valencia Road

East Side  

Houghton Road southbound will be closed to motorists starting at 8 a.m. The I-10 exit at Houghton road will also be closed. 

The following roadway closures will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Valencia Road westbound from Benson Highway to Alvernon Way
  • I-10 eastbound exit at Valencia Road and Sixth Avenue
  • Alvernon Way southbound from Valencia Road to Aerospace Parkway
  • Sixth Avenue/Nogales Highway northbound from 22nd Street to Sahuarita Road will be highly restricted to travel

All roadways are scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m.

Roads closed throughout Tucson on Saturday for El Tour de Tucson

The following travel restrictions and road closures will be in place at 6 a.m. Saturday because of the annual El Tour de Tucson bike race.

Downtown – Sixth Avenue, north of 22 nd  Street and south of Broadway, will be closed to motorists from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m., after the last rider. Expect additional downtown side street closures.

East side  – Houghton Road will be closed to motorists from Mary Ann Cleveland Way/Old Vail Road to Sahuarita Road from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Silverbell Road southbound from Ina Road to Goret Road
  • Mission Road eastbound ramp onto Starr Pass Boulevard
  • Aviation Parkway eastbound from Broadway to Golf Links Road
  • Wilmot Road southbound from Golf Links Road to Davis Monthan
  • Nicaragua Drive/Calle Polar/Escalante Road eastbound from Wilmot Road to Kolb Road

Additional closures include:

  • I-10 and Houghton Road exits
  • Kolb Road southbound from Escalante Road to Valencia Ramp Road
  • Valencia Road eastbound from Kolb Road to Old Vail Road
  • Mary Ann Cleveland Way westbound from Colossal Cave Road to Houghton Road
  • Irvington Road eastbound from Kolb Road to Houghton Road
  • Houghton Road northbound from Irvington Road to Escalante Road
  • Escalante Road eastbound from Houghton Road to Old Spanish Trail will be highly restricted to travel

Motorists may experience lengthy traffic delays associated with this event, so please plan accordingly. The traveling public should use caution when driving, bicycling or walking in these areas. Please watch for event participants, obey all traffic control, and watch for detour signs and personnel providing traffic control.

El Tour De Tucson Road Closures 2023

On Saturday, November 18, 2023, the 40 th  Annual El Tour de Tucson will take place throughout the community. The following travel restrictions and road closures will be in place for the day-long event.

Downtown Road Closures – On Friday, November 17, 2023, beginning at 6 a.m., Cushing Street from Stone Avenue to El Paso Avenue will be closed to motorists.

On Saturday, beginning at 4 a.m., Sixth Avenue from 15 th  Avenue to 22 nd  Street will be closed to all motorists. Sixth Avenue from 15 th  Avenue to Stone Avenue will reopen at 11:30 a.m.

On Saturday, beginning at 4:00 a.m., Stone Avenue  from 14 th  Avenue to 18 th  Street will be closed to all motorists. This area is scheduled to reopen at 12:30 p.m.

Expect additional street closures in the downtown area, including Main Avenue, 12 th  Street, Simpson Street, 15 th  Street and Fourth Avenue between 4:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Additional Road Closures Include:

  • Alvernon Way southbound from Valencia Road to Aerospace Parkway will be closed from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Aviation Parkway eastbound from Broadway Boulevard to Golf Links Road will be closed, including on and off ramps, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Valencia Road eastbound at the Kolb Road righthand turn will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Driveway Road and Dawn Road will be closed at Houghton Road from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Continental Road from Camino Casa Verde to Duval Mine Road will be closed to all traffic from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Mission Road northbound from Duval Mine Road to Helmet Peak Road will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

On Ramp and Off Ramp Closures Include:

  • The I-10 westbound on-ramp will be closed.
  • The I-10 eastbound off-ramp will be closed.
  • The eastbound I-10 on-ramp and westbound off-ramp will remain open.
  • The eastbound on-ramp and all westbound ramps will remain open.
  • The I-10 eastbound on-ramp and all westbound ramps will remain open.
  • The I-19 northbound and southbound off-ramps will be closed.
  • The northbound and southbound on-ramps will remain open.
  • The I-19 east side and west side Frontage Roads will remain open. Left turns from the west side Frontage Road onto westbound Continental Road will be restricted. 
  • The I-19 northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp will be closed.
  • The I-19 northbound on-ramp and southbound off-ramp will remain open.

All roadways are anticipated to reopen as the last rider passes through the closures, with all roadways scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m.

There will be additional traffic restrictions regionally to accommodate this event. Emergency services personnel will be allowed to travel through the closures in case of an emergency.

El Tour de Tucson is Arizona’s largest and longest-running bicycling event. Held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, El Tour is a fundraising adventure ride attracting cyclists of all ages and abilities from throughout the United States and worldwide. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early in order to avoid traffic detours necessary for the event. Please note that pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained in and around road closures. Businesses, parking garages and parking lots are open and accessible.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — As Tucson gets ready to welcome back El Tour for its 39th ride on Saturday, Nov. 19, cyclists planning to attend will want to be sure to register before it's too late.

Riders can save $10 on fees if they register by midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Registration fees will increase incrementally through the end of the registration period. For Individual and tandem riders, entry fees will be:

  • $175 - register by midnight Tuesday, Nov. 1
  • $185 - register by midnight Thursday, Nov. 10
  • $200 - register by midnight Monday, Nov. 14
  • $300 - register by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 (final deadline)

Participants of all skill levels can participate in El Tour de Tucson, and rides vary in distance. There are 100-mile, 62-mile and 32-mile variations of the route.

Shorter 'fun rides' along 10, 5 and 1-mile routes are also available, with a registration fee starting at $15 per rider.

This year, El Tour de Tucson will be using new ride routes, all starting and finishing at the Tucson Convention Center and nearby areas. Fiesta activities and packet pick-up will also be staged near the TCC, in the Historic Eckbo Plaza .

KGUN 9 will publish street closure information closer to the day of the ride.

El Tour de Tucson annually welcomes over 7,000 cyclists from around the world. The ride also supports charities and non-profits.

Perimeter Bicycling Association, the non-profit organization that produces El Tour and other cycling events has raised more that $100 million for charity since 1983, according to the website.
