Visa Requirements for Myanmar

myanmar tourist visa price

Despite the challenges of dealing with military bureaucracy, Myanmar , formerly known as Burma, can be an exciting and beautiful place to visit. Yet, Myanmar is one of the countries where you must have a visa arranged before arrival, otherwise, you'll be denied entry and put right back on a plane out.

There are some neighboring countries, such as Vietnam and Singapore, that do not require a visa for a short visit to Myanmar and others like Australia, China, and New Zealand (as well a handful of European countries) that also have the privilege of being able to obtain a visa on arrival. Despite being technically on the list for visa on arrival, the U.S. State Department advises against showing up without a prearranged visa. Instead, U.S. citizens can apply for a visa online before they enter Myanmar for either business or tourism. Or, if you require a longer stay, you could apply for another kind of visa that suits your circumstances—but these have to be applied for by mail or in person.

If you are applying for an eVisa, you will only be able to enter Myanmar through a limited number of ports, which includes the three largest airports (Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay International Airport) and some land borders with Thailand and India. You must print out a copy of your eVisa approval and be ready to show it when you arrive in Myanmar.

U.S. citizens can apply for other visas with one of the three Myanmar diplomatic missions (Washington DC, New York, or Los Angeles) or mail in their application. Along with your application, you will need to mail in your original passport, two standard-size color photographs of your face against a white background, a copy of your flight itinerary or a letter from your tour operator, a prepaid self-addressed envelope, and your application fee paid by cashier's check or money order. The visa application fee is non-refundable, so make sure that your information is entered correctly the first time and that your photo meets the specifications.

eVisa For Tourism

For the casual traveler, a tourism eVisa is the easiest way to get into Myanmar, but you will only be allowed to stay in the country for up to 28 days. If for some reason you can't sort out your Myanmar visa online, you can still apply the "old fashioned" way by either visiting the embassy or mailing your passport, visa application, and money order to the embassy for processing.

Visa Fees and Application

The eVisa application process is fast and easy, but be sure to have your travel documents and credit card on hand before you start the process.

  • You can simply fill out your application on the government website , submit a color photograph, and pay a $50 application fee.
  • Your visa should be approved within three days, but if you need it even faster, you can pay for the express service, which only costs $6 more and promises that your application will be processed within 24 hours.

eVisa For Business

If you are traveling to Myanmar for business, you'll apply for a business visa using the same government website, but you will also need to submit your letter of invitation from the company you are doing business with and a copy of that company's business registration. This visa comes with a higher application fee of $70, but you will be able to enjoy a longer stay in Myanmar for up to 70 days.

Meditation Visa

If you intend to travel to Myanmar to participate in a meditation retreat for longer than the 28 days, you can apply for a meditation visa , which will allow you to stay in Myanmar for up to 70 days. When you submit your application, you will also need to include a letter to the ambassador, the original copy of the sponsor letter from the meditation center you'll be attending. The fee for this visa is $50 and it is valid for three months from the date of issuance.

Education Visa

An Education Visa will allow you to stay in Myanmar for up to 90 days provided that you are either lecturing or enrolled in a course or program at a university in Myanmar. With your application , you will need to submit a $50 fee, plus a completed work history form, a recommendation from the university you plan to attend, and a copy of the school's registration.

Employment Visa

An Employment Visa will grant you a 70-day stay in Myanmar, but this is extendable. When you apply , you'll need to fill out a work history form and provide an invitation letter of employment from registered Myanmar company, a copy of that company's registration, a copy of the receipts certifying that tax payment will be imposed, and the application fee of $50.

Transit Visa

If you have a short layover in Myanmar, but don't want to pay full price for an eVisa to leave the airport, you can apply for a transit visa, which is valid for 24 hours and costs only $20. However, this visa is not as convenient to apply for as the eVisa and you will need to submit your passport and application by mail , in addition to a copy of your onward ticket and a completed work history form.

Visa Overstays

Most visas are valid for three months after being issued, but that doesn't mean you have to travel within those three months. As long as you enter the country before the three months are up, you will be allowed to stay for the full amount of time your visa dictates.

If you overstay your visa, you will have to pay $3 for every extra day for up to 30 days. After 30 days, the fine increases to $5 per day. You'll be charged this fine when you leave Myanmar, typically at the Airport Immigration Office. Although a few tourists do choose to overstay their visa by a few days, doing so on a long-term basis has some serious downsides. For one, you won't be able to fly domestically within Myanmar, and hotels and bus lines are required by law to deny service if your visa is expired. You may meet people who choose to take this risk, especially since the fine is so low, and overstaying your visa won't hinder your ability to enter Myanmar in the future but generally, it is not a good idea if you want to avoid any attention from law enforcement.

Extending Your Visa

It's not possible to extend a Transit or Tourism Visa, but you can extend a Business, Meditation, Education, or Employment Visa by contacting the embassy directly. If you are requesting an extension for a Business Visa, you will also need to provide a recommendation letter.

Those from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam may enjoy a 14 day visa exemption period when arriving at an international airport. Singaporean passport holders may stay up to 30 days visa-free when arriving at an international airport.

A full list of eligible countries can be found here.

You may stay for up to 28 days from the date of arrival in Myanmar.

How much does a Myanmar tourist eVisa cost?

A Myanmar tourist eVisa costs US$50 and must be paid at the time of application with Visa, Master, American Express or JCB credit cards.

How long does it take to receive a Myanmar tourist eVisa?

You will receive confirmation of your application via email within 1 hour. Notification of the outcome of your application will be received by email within 3 working days. If approved, you will receive an approval letter, which you must print out and present on arrival at one of the approved entry points for Myanmar eVisas.

In our experience, we received the application confirmation immediately and the eVisa approval letter within 5 minutes! However, you should allow yourself enough time should it take longer.

At what ports of entry may I enter Myanmar with a tourist eVisa?

You may currently enter Myanmar with a tourist eVisa at one of the following ports of entry:

  • Yangon International Airport
  • Mandalay International Airport
  • Nay Pyi Taw International Airport

  • Kawthaung Land Border Checkpoint

Currently you may not enter Myanmar via a sea port on an eVisa.

Things to know before applying for your Myanmar tourist eVisa

Validity of your tourist eVisa is 90 days from the date of issue, so be sure not to apply too early or before you’ve confirmed your travel dates.

Myanmar tourist eVisa application fees are non-refundable, so again it’s best to apply only once you have confirmed your trip.

Tourist eVisas are for single entry only. Re-entry will require a new visa.

Some areas of Myanmar are restricted to which entry may be forbidden or require special permission. If you plan on entering any of these areas, please ensure you have the necessary permissions to do so. For most visitors travelling to the usual tourist spots, however, this will not apply.

The eVisa approval letter is not the visa itself. The visa will be granted after presenting the approval letter to immigration on arrival. While highly unlikely, you should note that immigration has the right to refuse entry to anyone, even if they possess the approval letter.

What you’ll need for your Myanmar eVisa application

  • A passport issued by one of the countries eligible for Myanmar eVisa application with a minimum remaining validity of 6 months. Have it handy as you’ll need the passport number, along with issue and expiry dates for the application.
  • A digital color photo taken within the past 3 months. It should be a head shot of the passport style variety – plain background, applicant facing head on to the camera, plain expression. We used our digital camera to take the shot in front of a white curtain, and simply cropped it using a photo editing app.
  • Port of entry. You’ll need to tell them where you plan on entering Myanmar from the list of approved eVisa ports of entry. You may, in fact, enter at any of the approved ports of entry but if your entry point is different to that on your eVisa approval letter it may increase the processing time on arrival. So, if you can, save yourself any hassle on arrival and put down the correct port of entry.
  • Accommodation details. You’ll need to put down the name and address of one registered accommodation provider where you plan on staying. Note that personal residence addresses will not be accepted.
  • A Visa, Master, American Express or JCB credit card for payment.

Where do I apply for a Myanmar tourist visa online?

Applicants may apply on the website of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population of Myanmar .

What to do on arrival in Myanmar

Present a physical copy of your Myanmar eVisa approval letter along with your passport to immigration. Both will then be stamped and returned to you, confirming your right to stay in Myanmar for up to 28 days.

  • Flight: Similar to the accommodation issue, you cannot be possible to travel around Myanmar by air with an expired visa.

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas.

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

The reciprocity information for that country*/area of authority will display:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While most visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the Reciprocity Fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview.

Immigrant Visa Interviews

For Immigrant Visa interviews each U.S. Embassy or Consulate has specific instructions for their applicants. Please click here to select your designated interview location.

Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Each Reciprocity Page will provide detailed information about how to obtain these civil documents from the country* you have selected, as well as the location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you can apply for your visa. For more information about civil document requirements for immigrant visa cases, see  civil documents .

To view the Civil Documents for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the drop-down menu below. On the Reciprocity Page, click on the tabs on the left to see the categories of Civil Documents and how to obtain them.

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]whenever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b) (1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.
