“History of the Harbor” Sunset Cruise

Step aboard the Little Traverse Bay Ferry Company's 65'  Harbor Princess  for this narrated tour of Little Traverse Bay. Reservations are $75 and include a full-service cash bar and snacks. Historical Society curator Beth Wemigwase will present a history of the waterfront as you cruise before the evening wraps up with a glorious sunset over the water.

Guests can chose to either depart from Bay Front Park in Petoskey at 7:30 pm or from Josephine Ford Park in Harbor Springs at 8:15 pm. The boat returns to both ports. When registering, please select if you plan to depart from Petoskey or Harbor Springs. You name will be on a reservation sheet at the boat; there are no physical tickets. 'Fleet Week' returns in celebration of 12th annual Blessing of the Fleet

HARBOR SPRINGS — Fleet Week is coming back to Harbor Springs next week, with a series of events to celebrate the 12th annual Blessing of the Fleet.

Each year, the Harbor Springs Historical Society hosts the Blessing of the Fleet, where a parade of boats are all blessed for a fun and safe boating season as they pass the flagship, Canim. An Odawa canoe, a Jiimaan, leads the parade.

Prior to the parade, the Odawa Woodland Singers will be performing at the Harbor Springs City Pier at 5:30 p.m.

The Blessing of the Fleet parade will kick off at 6 p.m. on June 27 on Little Traverse Bay. Vessels of all sizes, whether they be pontoon boats, sail boats or paddle boards, can take part.

This year, the honorary commodore is historian, builder and long-time Irish Boat Shop employee Dick Babcock, who will toss a memorial wreath into the harbor at the start of the parade. The wreath honors those who have lost their lives on the water.

People without a vessel are able participate by riding on the Harbor Princess, available to people who make a $150 donation to the historical society. There will be a full service bar and light appetizers aboard.

Along with the Blessing of the Fleet, the Harbor Springs Historical Society hosts "Fleet Week," a three-day period of festivities that honor local maritime history.

More than 150 vessels participated in the parade in 2023.

The three-day series of events kicks off from 11 a.m. to 3p.m. on Wednesday, June 26 in Josephine Ford Park in Harbor Springs. People will be able to take a Jiimaan out on the water themselves, led by expert crew members, according to the Harbor Springs Historical Society website. The event is open to all ages.

On June 26, people can take a sunset cruise of the Little Traverse Bay on the Harbor Princess, with narrations from Historical Society Curator Beth Wemigwase. The $75 ticket would include historical commentary, along with a full-service cash bar and snacks available for purchase. Guests can depart from the Petoskey Bayfront Park at 7:30 p.m. in Petoskey or at 8:15 p.m. at Josephine Ford Park in Harbor Springs.

On June 28, the historical society will be hosting a presentation about the Northern Michigan Sloop's 90th anniversary. Babcock will give the presentation at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit will open at 4:30 p.m. Reservations are required and are $25. They include wine and light snacks.

"My father grew up on a farm in Blackwater during the Great Depression. Because the family farmed, they ate well. This was a point of pride for them. My father left Blackwater, became a businessman and had a family. Despite uprooting, he returned to Blackwater every year to introduce me, my brother and sister, to the site of my grandfather's farm. The trip always included a trip to The Blackwater Trading Post. I was there with my daughter last week and was both shocked and pleased at the restoration of the store. Clearly a labor of love."
