Best MLB stadium tours: Go behind the scenes at these ballparks

“Life is an adventure, it’s not a package tour.”  – German philosopher Eckhart Tolle

If you enjoy going on “package tours” of historic mansions, foreign cities or fascinating museums, why not take a tour at a Major League Baseball stadium? We won’t tell Tolle, but let’s consider such a guided tour our own little “adventure.”

While it varies by venue, such tours typically lead you through the clubhouse, press box, workout facilities, batting cages under the stands, a dugout … and some will even allow you to walk onto the playing field. If the team has its own museum, those are likely to be included. The Atlanta Braves, for instance, include a curated look at their exceptional Monument Garden at Truist Park when you take one of their tours.

When planning a tour of a Major League ballpark, keep several things in mind:

Pro Tip No. 1: For the most behind-the-scenes experiences, go when the team doesn’t have a home game.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

You will often see notices listing features you won’t be able to see when there is a game that day. So even though you are likely to pay the same whether such access is permitted or denied, you’ll get more for your money when the team is on the road, or has an off-day during a homestand.

Pro Tip No. 2  Hurry to visit an older ballpark. You might not get another chance.

Derrick Sloboda of Fort Wayne, Indiana considers himself quite fortunate that he took a tour at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park before it was demolished. The Giants had already moved closer to downtown at what is now called Oracle Park, and the 49ers were about to move south to Santa Clara, so Candlestick was in its final weeks.

“The guide extended the tour by an hour because so many people were saying ‘good bye,’ (so) we had half hour on the field, which was great,” recalls Sloboda.

Keep in mind that the main purpose of taking a guided tour is to create memories, and once that venue is gone, those memories will be even more special to you.

Pro Tip No. 3: Try to overlook the high prices

Typically the money you pay for the tour goes to a charity or “foundation” operated by the team, or one that’s meaningful to the ownership. The prices can be pretty high (VIP Tours at some parks top $500), but you’ll get to visit parts of the facility that fans rarely get to see.

So rather than focusing on what it costs, think about the charity your purchase is supporting. And appreciate that you and your family are getting to experience the places where your favorite players do their work.

It’s hard to put a price tag on that.

Join us now for our ranking of the five MLB parks with the best tours (OK, I’m cheating by including six!), based partially on the experiences of visitors to my BaseballParks.com site.

1. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

While other teams might offer you one or two options of tours, the Dodgers provide 11 ! These range from the standard walking stadium tour ($30, and kids and seniors are $25), to the pregame tour of landmarks within the ballpark ($45), to the "Take the Field Tour" where you can play catch in the outfield ($175, only on non-game days – bring your glove!) all the way to the $500 VIP Tour that includes getting to greet the players as they take batting practice.

Most of these experiences include a tour of the Vin Scully Press Box, which is Holy Ground to me, because it’s where I actually got to meet Vin about a dozen years ago!

While on a trip to visit relatives in California, Dutch citizen Chris Kabout thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Chavez Ravine. “The tour showed you the press boxes, old locker rooms, showcases with trophies, gold gloves, retired jerseys, the dugout and you were allowed to walk on the dirt,” he recalls.

The Netherlands resident added that the tour’s guide kept things lively by asking the group trivia questions about the Dodgers. And considering the team dates back to 1883 as the Brooklyn Grays, there is a lot of trivia to discuss!

2. Citi Field, New York  Mets

As befits Citi Field’s reputation as a fun place to attend a game, tours of the Mets’ home have a decidedly upbeat and enjoyable atmosphere, complete with a sit-down history lesson in the room where post-game press conferences are held.

Like the Dodgers, the Mets offer multiple tour options – with varying prices. The public tour costs $25 ($20 for kids 12 and under) and will take you to the private suites, two of the season-ticket-holder restaurants, the press box and down on the field.

On days with a home night game, the "Grand Slam Tour" is available for $70, and that’s over and above the cost of your game ticket. This also permits early entry into the park to watch batting practice. If you want to get closer to the players around the batting cage, there’s the $250 All-Star Tour.

They also offer private tours, with the cost depends on how many are in your group. For instance, if you put together a group of ten, the cost is $62.50 per person.

3. Wrigley Field, Chicago  Cubs

When Wrigley was being designed 110 years ago, they didn’t make it easy to get from one spot under the stands to another. But that just makes the guided tours of the Friendly Confines all the more interesting.

The charge of $30 is reasonable compared to other parks, and whether it’s a gameday or not, you’ll get to check out the famous bleachers and go down on the field. If the Cubbies aren’t home that day, you’ll also get to go in the visiting clubhouse plus one of the dugouts … and you’ll get up close and personal with the iconic ivy growing on the outfield wall.

4. Yankee Stadium, New York

If you go on a tour here, you won’t be visiting the exact spot where Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig played – or Bernie Williams for that matter – because this version of Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. But you will be able to visit the monuments to Babe and Lou in Monument Park in center field as part of the $35 Classic Tour. It also includes the New York Yankees museum. There’s even a version of the tour that includes lunch at the Hard Rock Café that’s built into the ballpark.

One number you’ll see and hear often during any tour here: 27. That’s the number of World Series titles captured by the Bronx Bombers. They won’t let you forget it!

5 (tie). Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals & Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City Royals

While one is a fairly new facility (Busch Stadium, 2006) and one is kind of not-so-new (Kauffman Stadium, 1973), they have more in common than the state of Missouri. Both the Cards and Royals operate exceptional museums that are worthy of your time, and their tour guides are among the nicest and friendliest in the sport.

The Royals have been operating tours for decades, and they have the process down pat. They offer three versions, and you can’t beat the prices: the Classic Tour costs $15; the All-Star tour is $25 (includes the team Hall of Fame); and the MVP Tour costs $35 (includes the broadcast facilities and the dugout suites). Don’t forget to visit KC’s excellent Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, just six miles west of Kauffman.

Across the state in St. Louis, the Cards offer two tours. The 360 Tour is a quick walk around the park and the dugout, showing you the view from various vantage points. It costs $12. The Classic Tour is $22 and includes a visit to the broadcast booths and admission to the Cardinals museum across the street.

Come to think of it, plan an adventure to Missouri so you can visit both Kauffman and Busch. The “package tours” sure are affordable, and you won’t get in trouble with a German philosopher!

IRFU rule out stadium switch after calls to move Ireland matches to Croke Park

kingspan stadium tour

The IRFU have ruled out taking an international game to Croke Park in the future, chief executive Kevin Potts stating that Aviva Stadium will remain the home of rugby in this country.

Leinster recently staged a Champions Cup semi-final against Northampton and sold out the 82,300-capacity venue in less than 24 hours.

There have been calls to move some of Ireland’s bigger Test matches from their traditional base, which can accommodate 51,700 supporters, to GAA HQ across town.

Speaking at the launch of the IRFU’s strategic plan for the next four years, Potts confirmed that there were no plans to take the show on the road to Croker.

‘Croke Park, they did sell out in three hours which was actually remarkable, but I think we were all taken by that,’ he said.

‘My own family members were struggling to get tickets, they were gone, as we all know. Croke Park and our friends in the GAA are very friendly to Irish rugby and Leinster have access to it when the Aviva isn’t available next year, Munster have access to Páirc Uí Chaoimh and the collaboration is fantastic.’

‘But if you’re asking me, will there be a Test played there? No. The home of Irish rugby is the Aviva Stadium and that’s where our Test games will be played.’

Newly-appointed IRFU performance director David Humphreys, who has succeeded David Nucifora, was also in attendance yesterday. Although the strategic plan contained no defined targets in the coming seasons, Humphreys confirmed that Ireland’s ultimate ambition is to secure the biggest prize on the global stage.

‘We all want to be part of an organisation of a team that wins the World Cup,’ the former Ulster and Ireland out-half said. ‘We will be leaving no stone unturned in trying to do that.’

‘If you look back to last November, we couldn’t really have had a better preparation so everything we did gave us a really good chance. In the end, we lost to New Zealand by one score. We came in (to the tournament) 17 games unbeaten and we had very few injuries in the competition.

‘So, to me, that’s not a negative. That’s sport. Of course we want to win it but the nature of sport is sometimes you just don’t win.’

Yesterday, the IRFU stated their intention to focus on the growth of the women’s game in the next four years. The national team, under the guidance of Scott Bemand, have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes in the past 12 months, finishing third in the Six Nations and qualifying for next year’s World Cup in the process.

The Women’s Sevens side will also be competing in the Paris Olympics later this year. And Potts believes that the potential for the women’s game is vast in the coming seasons.

‘I think that would be a view around the world, that it’s a true area for growth in our sport is with girls and women,’ the IRFU CEO added.

‘We fully embrace and believe that, that’s why we are giving it a major focus over the next four years.

‘We had three Six Nations games at home this year, record crowd, each of the events made a small profit which is very positive.’

‘In England, where obviously they are far more advanced that we are in terms of their structures and competitions, they’re getting big crowd at their games.

‘We’re engaging with potential sponsors all the time, there’s greater interest, and the numbers of girls and women that are turning up at our mini-rugby and play rugby programmes is phenomenal.

‘I think, without doubt, it’s a true area for growth, and we in the IRFU and the provinces are committed to really giving it a boost over the next four years,’ added Potts

Explainer: How West Ham’s football stadium became a ballpark in 18 days

LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 15: Preparations are made ahead of the MLB World Tour: London Series 2023 between St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, taking place on June 24-25, at London Stadium on June 15, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Morton/Getty Images for MLB Europe)

Major League Baseball returns to the UK this weekend for a third time in six years, and West Ham United’s London Stadium has been transformed into a baseball field for the third time.

This year, the stadium that was the main home of the 2012 Summer Olympics will host the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies for games on Saturday and Sunday, with West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen making way for the Phillies’ Bryce Harper and the Mets’ Pete Alonso , plus more of MLB ’s top talent.

But hang on, isn’t a baseball field a different shape to a football pitch? How do they make that work?

Allow The Athletic to explain — or rather, ask Murray Cook, an expert in that area, to explain…

How long did it take?

“From start to finish, it took 18 days to build this,” says Cook, MLB’s field consultant.

“This” is the third time he has helped prepare the London Stadium for the London Series. The other two series at the stadium were the New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox in 2019 and the St Louis Cardinals versus the Chicago Cubs last summer — the latter was meant to take place in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It took us 21 days in 2019 and 18 last year,” says Cook. “We never try and set a record but this was a big team effort.”

Why the London Stadium?

“We started this process back in 2014, in terms of looking at how we could do it in London,” says Cook. “Over the years, we continued to look and figured out by 2019 we had a shot at making it work.

“We created a team, mostly with help from the UK and Europe; people like myself from the U.S. help create a strategy, although it was in a very short window. We looked at different places and felt the London Stadium was the right fit.”

It took so long for MLB to work out whether it could stage regular-season games in European football or rugby stadiums because of the difficulty of converting the rectangular pitches used for those sports into a playable triangular baseball field. Most football/rugby pitches just didn’t have enough width to fit all the necessary components.

The London Stadium, however, had the benefit of having been originally designed with extra space to accommodate track and field events. After making changes to the seating layout, Cook was able to make it fit.

So how do they do it?

Then came the hardest part: building the field itself. After West Ham’s final home match of the season on May 11, the grass was stripped, then it’s a case of laying down everything a baseball game will need. “There’s 345 tons of infield clay,” says Cook. “Then you have to sort out the turf, the netting, padding, dugouts, but what is great about it is most of the stuff we used last year, we were able to use this year.”

The turf had been tested, ensuring an appropriate bounce and checking how the spikes on the players’ footwear fit into it, as well as looking at drainage. “We want to make sure the field is safe, which it has been previously. We want it to be as consistent, reliable and enjoyable as possible for the players like a baseball field.”

He adds: “For us, the key part of the job is using the drag to groom the clay. There are a lot of similarities between this and the maintenance of a cricket pitch. That is our cricket ‘wicket’ area, because 70 percent of a baseball game is played in that area. It rains a lot here, so dealing with the weather can be challenging due to the clay. We sometimes have to put out covers to protect it.”

What can the MLB novice expect?

The Mets and the Phillies is one of Major League Baseball’s biggest rivalries — the Battle of the Broads — so expect some fan rivalry.

Meanwhile, a connection with British football comes via Rob McElhenney, famous for “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” as well as for co-owning League One side Wrexham, who are stars of the Emmy-winning documentary series Welcome To Wrexham . McElhenney is a hardcore Phillies fan, and will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch on Sunday. Fellow actor Matthew Broderick is a Mets fan and will do the honors on Saturday.

Alonso is one of the key players for the Mets, while Phillies hitter Harper is widely considered one of the best baseball players in the world, so spectators are seeing the sport’s top talents. The Phillies had a team event on Thursday night at the Tower of London. Their manager Rob Thomson and his coaches visited the Philly-themed bar Passyunk Avenue in London’s Waterloo district, helping promote the sport on this side of the Atlantic.

“We have a lot of Philly fans here, but it was great walking around (London’s Borough) Market and not being recognised,” said Harper. “Football, I don’t want to say ‘soccer,’ what an incredible sport, and my wife grew up playing it. I enjoy watching the Premier League and I love Jack Grealish’s hair. He has a really good mop.

“In terms of the popularity of the game, it’s great being here in London. But as much as we want to put baseball in people’s faces, fans are going to have to want to watch us play.

“We’re aware there’s other sports, like NFL and basketball, that people enjoy more than baseball. As baseball grows, the more we go into different countries, hopefully it will continue to grow.”

Finally, after converting West Ham’s pitch, is Cook converted to the team?

“Through doing this, I’ve been to a few West Ham games and I have a soft spot for the team,” says Cook.

But mostly it’s about professional pride. “I’ll watch a game and think, ‘We converted that pitch.’ The most satisfying part of the job is seeing the players happy with the surface and watching the fans be all excited and embracing the sport. That’s what makes it special to be involved in all of this.”

He adds: “It’s a great venue, so you look at what you can do to enhance the experience for baseball fans. We clean it off for James Williams (West Ham’s head groundsman) and the boys (on his staff), and then they take it from there and get it ready for the Foo Fighters concert in the next few weeks.”
