History of Chilika Lake

According to the Chilika development authority : it is believed that the pirate King Raktabahhu came to ransack Puri with a huge fleet of ships.

He anchored out of sight to avoid detection, but the sea washed up refuse from the ships on shore and warned the townspeople, who fled with all their possessions.

Raktabahu thus found a deserted city when he finally arrived. Furious, he insisted that the sea had betrayed him and ordered his army to attack it.

The sea entered the seabed in pursuit. Then it surged back, drowning the army and forming what is now Chilika Lagoon.

Many ancient texts mention the southern sector of Chilika as being a major harbor for maritime commerce, back in the days when the King of Kalinga was known as the Lord of the Sea.

Indeed, some rocks in the Southern sector are marked by a band of white formed by the remains of coral (which are exclusively marine).

This band is at a height of 8m above the current water level, a clear indication that the area was once marine, and the water much deeper than it is today.

Chilika Lake is spread over Khurda, Ganjam and Puri districts of Odisha (formerly Orissa). Balugaon and Rambha are two major towns serving as entry points for the lake. It is Asia's largest salt-water lagoon and is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sandy ridge. The pear-shaped lake spreads across 1,100 km 2 , and has a unique ecosystem with a range of aquatic flora and fauna found in and around its brackish waters. An impressive array of bird life, both native and migrant, makes Chilika one of the best places in India for bird-watching, splashing around in the water and quiet relaxation.

Chilika Lake is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Chilika Lake is an important habitat and breeding ground for both resident and migratory and aquatic birds, most notably flamingos. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent. Migratory birds arrive in October from as far away as Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Himalayas and generally stay until March. Part of the lake is protected by the Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary, which harbors over 150 migratory and resident species of birds. The Nalaban Island within the lagoon is classified as a Bird Sanctuary under the wildlife protection act. The lake is also home to a diverse range of aquatic life, including 225 species of fish and the Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella Brevirostris). The rare limbless lizard barkudia insularis is endemic to one of the lake's small islands.

The larger islands lie between the sandbar and the lake, separated by shallow channels, and include Parikud, Phulbari, Berahpura, Nuapara, Nalbana, and Tampara. Some of the smaller islands are Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island, Beacon Island, etc.

The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar , about 120 km away from where taxis, trains and buses are available to the lake.

The nearest rail stations is at Balugaon, on the Howrah-Chennai track. From Balugaon buses are available to the lake.

A part of Chilika Lake is visible from NH5 and the Howrah-Chennai train track. Many buses ply from Bhubaneswar (Baramunda Bus Station) and Cuttack (Badambadi Bus Station) to Balugaon throughout the day, OSRTC buses (i.e. state-run buses) being the best ones. The journey takes 2 hours and costs less than ₹100 one way. From there, one has to hire a taxi or an auto-ricksaw to reach Barkul or Rambha (In case of Rambha, passengers can alight at Keshpur, which is further ahead from Balugaon, and from there hire an auto-rickshaw). Satapada is well connected by daily local buses from Puri. Visitors can take an OTDC day tour from Puri to see Satapada (~₹400; 3-hr boat ride and AC transport included). However, Satapada is not so well connected from Bhubaneswar and taxis have to be hired to get there.

Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are available. The services of local boatmen and the motorboats of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation are available for access to the islands though outboard motors are not allowed near the bird sanctuary. OTDC boats can be hired at Barkul and Rambha, and cost between ₹410 (for a 7-seater boat) to ₹790 (for a 34-seater boat) per hour. A special tour is operated by the OTDC between Barkul and Kalijai, and costs ₹40 per head. However you can find private machine operated boats for the tours, but you have to bargain a bit to get a fair deal.

A boat journey from Rambha to Satapada takes about 2½ hours.

The best time to visit Chilika is in the winter months, when migratory birds arrive there.

Is very close from Barkul. Flocks of peacocks roam here, mingling with the devotees. Legends say that 200-300 years ago a girl named Kali drowned, near the present Kalijai Temple, while returning to her maternal house from her husband's. A few years later her sister, Jai, came looking for Kali and came to the island. She died on the island(reasons unknown). Fishermen and other local folks used to hear cries of two girls at nights. But soon after the temple was built the cries stopped for good. Earlier fishermen used to visit the temple before venturing into the deep sea, but nowadays, it's just another tourist spot.

• 19.6945 85.3087 5 Nalabana Bird Sanctuary . A designated bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act, Nalabana is a big island in the center of the lake. A treat for bird-watchers in the winter months, this island is completely submerged in the monsoon months.

The sea mouth is located on a strip of sand lined with casuarina trees. The boats don't take visitors to the actual sea mouth but stop little south west of the sea mouth. This area is known as* 19.660643 85.500063 9 Chilika Sea Mouth Beach . ( updated Jun 2021 ) . The stretch of sand houses small sacks selling fresh seafood along with soft drinks and beer. Vendors also sell pearls straight out of oyster shells.  

Boat in Barkul. Water Scooters and Pedal Boats are available here. Also, drivers of speedboats allow passengers to drive if requested. There is a boating club in nearby Tampara. The place is very beautiful and pedal boats are available here for ₹75.

At Rambha : OTDC Panthanivas offers boating at the Panthanivas itself which are available from 5:30AM to 5PM. Best time for boating is just before sunrise since it is really awesome to see the rising sun from the horizon and birds literally flying in all directions. At the Panthanivas, one can hire the motorboats (10-seater) for ₹550 per hour or the speedboats (5-seater) for ₹1650 per hour. Alternatively, from Rambha, three islands (viz., the Breakfast Island, Bird Island and Beacon Island) for ₹875 in any of the boats and five islands (viz., the Breakfast Island, Bird Island, Beacon Island, Sanakuda and Honeymoon Island) for ₹1650.

Do not be tempted to buy pearls or corals from Chilika lake. Fresh water Oysters are brought from Hyderabad & broken in our presence to take out the cultured pearls. Touts sell them as natural pearls. These are available for ₹20 onwards. Touts also claim the efficacy of "black pearls" and sell them to unsuspecting victims.

Fish, prawn and the famous crab (always sold live) from Balugaon market. Numerous trinkets are available in Kalijai.

Drinks are available but if any one is particular about brands and such things, it is safer to carry one's own.

OTDC (Odisha Tourism Development Corp.) panthanivas are the best bets anywhere in Odisha, are very cheap and boats owned by OTDC can be booked here as well, which are once again the best boats in the region.

The art gallery here has some beautiful paintings reflecting Odisha's culture.
• Narayani - About 15 km from Balugaon, it has a temple in scenic surroundings in the Eastern Ghats.
• Nirmaljhara - Also in Khallikote, very close to the art college, it is a perennial stream which has been channeled into different ponds. Built in 1676, it also features many temples. Adventurous persons can take a bath in one of the ponds here.
• Salia Dam - Built on River Salia amidst stunning locales. About 25 km from Rambha and 15 km from Barakul.

Oriya people consider it to be lucky if Kalijai Temple, Bhagwati Temple and Narayani temple are visited on the same day.

Chilika's unique location and water composition make it an ideal home for over 100 varieties of fish, crabs and other sea animals and the star attraction is the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin. Running parallel to the Bay of Bengal, the sea water flows inland into the lake. In winter, thousands of migratory birds flock here, among whom the pink flamingos are the most photographed. Watching flocks of birds take off into the air in a coordinated pattern is mesmeric. The lake's shallow waters enclose large tracts of marshes, lowlands and islands, among which the most prominent are Nalbana Island and Kalijai Island. The Nalbana Island, with its wide variety of flora and fauna, forms the core of the Chilika Sanctuary. Kalijai Island is home to Goddess Kalijai, revered by local fishermen. This island plays host to a large fair during the annual Makar Sankranti festival in January. You can hire boats for regular rides around the lake or opt for special ones that take you to places where the shy Irrawaddy dolphins can be spotted.

A pear-shaped salt water lake situated south of the Puri district in Orissa is one of the state’s most spectacular highlights – the famous Chilika Lake. The rocks tend to appear white, caused by folic acid in the immense amount of bird droppings that cover these rocks.  

Breakfast Island

Also known as Sankuda Island, this pear shaped island is situated between Somolo Island and Badakuda. Its main highlight is a bungalow that, although now in ruins, is a historical structure constructed by the King of Kalikote. 

Kalijai Temple

The Kalijai Temple is located on an island in Chilika Lake and is dedicated to the goddess Kalijai, who is a highly revered deity among the locals. Approachable through a boat ride from Chilika Lake, the temple witnesses a huge celebration in the form of Makar Sakranti during the month of January every year.

The deity worshipped here was apparently once a girl named Kalijai who was going to her in-laws through a boat on this lake, and was killed in an accident after a heavy storm capsized the boat. The temple was built on the site where the boat sank; the locals, fishermen, sailors and even some tourists visit the temple to pray for a safe journey to the lake.

Mangalajodi

Another area famous for the influx of migratory birds each year, Mangalajodi is one of the oldest villages in the Chilika region that was once also popular as a fishing village. The vast wetlands of Mangalajodi have been declared as an International Bird Conservation Area. The village also has a number of temples that make it a significantly religious spot for the local Hindus. Festivals like Danda Yatrais and Paika Akhada are some ritual celebrations that are an important part of the village’s traditions.  

Maa Tara Tarini Temple

The Tara Tarini Temple is located on a hilltop along the banks of the Rushikulya River and is a popular sacred spot that is dedicated to the twin goddesses Tara and Tarini. The visitors are required to climb a thousand steps to reach the temple that attracts a lot of devotees almost all year long. The most important event in the temple is a procession hosted by the locals in the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar each year. 

Sea Mouth Island

A boat ride away from the town of Satapada, the Sea Mouth Island is located where Chilika Lake meets the Bay of Bengal, and has the unique feature of remaining submerged under water during high tide, and emerges only during low tide. At a distance of 44 km from Puri, Chilika Lake is Asia’s biggest inland saltwater lagoon situated near Satapada in Odisha. Located at the mouth of the Daya River, Chilika Lake is the largest coastal lagoon in India and also the second-largest saltwater lagoon in the world after the New Caledonian barrier reef in New Caledonia.

The lake is studded with small islands including the most charming Honeymoon Island and the Breakfast Island. Spreads across 1,100 sq. km, the pear-shaped lake extends from Bhusandpur in Puri district in the North to Rambha-Malud in Ganjam district in the South, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a 60 km long narrow strip of marshy islands and sand flats.

The lake is an ecosystem with large fishery resources. It sustains more than 150,000 fisherfolk living in 132 villages on the shore and Islands. In 1981, Chilika Lake has designated the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Rambha Bay – at the southern end of the lake with a group of islands including:

The Becon Island -, with an architectural conical pillar (to put a light on the top) built by Mr. Snodgrass, the then collector of Ganjam of the East India Company, on a mass of rock in the Rambha Bay near Ghantasila hill. It has scenic water spread surrounded by the Eastern Ghat.

The Breakfast Island -, pear-shaped, known as “Sankuda island”, with remnants of a dilapidated bungalow constructed by the King of Kalikote, has rare plants and is full of greenery with appealing flora.

Honeymoon Island -, 5 km (3 mi) from Rambha Jetty, known as Barkuda Island, with clear waters has abundant red and green macroalgae in the bed is also known for the limbless lizard, an endemic species found here.

Somolo and Dumkudi islands -, located in the Central and Southern sectors of the lake, in the backdrop of the scenic Khalikote hill range, are inundated remnants of the Eastern Ghats with rich flora and fauna and are also known for sighting of Irrawaddy dolphins.

Birds’ island – located in the southern sector of the lake has huge exposed hanging rocks, is painted white due to folic acid of the droppings of the birds and is known for rich algal communities and few mangrove species and also migratory birds in winter.

Parikud – is a group of composite islands in the Garh Krishnaprasad Block for nature lovers and provides an avian spectacle during the winter season.

Kalijai Temple – located on an island is considered to be the abode of the Goddess Kalijai. This temple is located at a hill that is surrounded by blue water bears. Local people of Chilika refer to the goddess as the reigning deity of the lagoon.

Satapada village – At the new mouth of the lake, provides a view of the Lake and also views of the dolphins. Hundreds of boats here provide tours of the lake for tourists.

Barunkuda – A small island situated near Magarmukh, the mouth of the lake, has a temple of Lord Varuna.

Nabagraha – is an ancient deity located along the outer channel.

Chourbar Shiva Temple – is located near Alupatna village, along the outer channel.

Manikapatna -, located on the outer channel has historical evidence of a port which was used for trade with the Far East and also has the Bhabakundeswar temple of Lord Shiva, an old Mosque whose entrance door is made of the jaws of the whale.

Sand-Bar and Mouth of the Lake – is a striking and un-explored stretch of 30 km (20 mi) of the empty beach across the sand bar which separates the Lake from the Sea.

Mangalajodi – a famous bird sanctuary for sighting migratory birds.

How to Reach

The nearest airport is at Bhubaneswar, 98 km. from Balugaon, 105 km from Barkul and, 130 km from Rambha, 108 km from Satapada.

The nearest railhead is at Balugaon for Barkul (6kms), Puri for Satapada (50kms). Rambha is also a railhead. Bhubaneswar is yet another convenient railhead for visiting Chilika Lake.

Barkul,Balugoan and Rambha are situated on National Highway No.5. Regular buses ply between Berhampur and Bhubaneswar, which stop at Rambha and Balugoan. Tourists can avail themselves of auto-rickshaws and taxis from both these places and reach the lake in a short while.
