Laurel Goodwin: The Cage’s Yeoman Colt

  • Cast & Crew

Had things worked out differently, Laurel Goodwin , Yeoman Colt in The Cage , would have remained part of the original series.

But Jeffrey Hunter decided not to do the series, and NBC went in a different direction, dropping several characters, including Number One, and Yeoman Colt.

Part of why Goodwin was hired for The Cage was her looks, specifically her legs. “One of the key things about this character,” said Goodwin, “that Gene Roddenberry said was, ‘We want Yeoman Colt to have great-looking legs.’ He said, ‘You appear to have nice-looking legs.’ So I opened up this portfolio. There was an old magazine called Pageant . I had done a big spread, and one of the shots was with me in black leotards, with the little micro-glasses, and a skunk on a leash and a book of Freud in the other hand. And oh, boy, does it make me look great. So I opened the thing, and Gene said, ‘Well, yes, they do look good. But, you know, photos.’ So he said, ‘You do look like you do have good-looking legs. Would you mind lifting your skirt a little bit?’ It didn’t bother me any. I was a model as a teenager. You dressed in the back with a sheet around you.”

“So I pulled my skirt up. Not immodestly. He said, ‘Well, yes, I guess we all have to agree that she does have good-looking legs.’ So I’m thinking, ‘Hmm. Well, okay.’ So now, I get the job.'”

Goodwin didn’t get a chance to show off those legs though. “Well, by the time they got this costume together, against my better judgment, I could have been knock-kneed and bowlegged,” she said. “They had me in baggy three-quarter trousers and ugly boots. I thought, ‘Well, I’m certainly glad that one of the key things was that you had good-looking legs.'”

The character of Colt was “playing the subservient role,” said Goodwin, “and kind of having a crush on the captain and not trying to allow it to be picked up on so I could avoid getting into trouble, because you didn’t do that in a military setting.” While it may not have been the best role for a woman, the actress “wanted to play it right because, just being an actress and getting a job, it wasn’t easy. The market was very, very tiny. Three networks. And they made a lot of pilots, but only a few ever got picked up. Star Trek was a bit different. It had a great philosophy. And I thought the timing was perfect, that it was time for a semi-adventure, philosophical, a little deeper than that science-fiction type thing, because everyone was getting a little tired of detectives and cowboys.”

Goodwin found being dropped from the show very painful for financial reasons. “It was very painful. Very painful,” she said. “I, at that period of time, was going through a divorce. Not a pleasant divorce. I ended up having to cough up half of my salary from doing Star Trek as part of the property settlement. California, and all that sort of stuff. So it cost me a pretty piece of change. It cost me half of what I made.” Working on the show would have “made an incredible difference…So, yeah, I was devastated. Devastated.”

Goodwin is the last living cast member from The Cage . “I’m the last man standing,” she said. “Yep. Yep, yep. I have to say, it’s really quite wonderful, particularly now, at my age, to know that in some small way the work is still there, still alive, that it’s not something everybody has forgotten about.”

"The Cage" Rolled Camera 53 Years Ago

It all started with "The Cage"... and "The Cage" started on this day, November 27, in 1964. Yes, that's when production commenced on the first pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series . We all know the saga: Gene Roddenberry’s initial stab at Trek – which was rejected by NBC, but impressed them enough to order a second pilot -- included some of the elements that fans came to know and love, but it also in many ways differed tremendously from what viewers saw later upon the premiere of “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” StarTrek.com , to mark the moment, has gathered together some facts, figures and anecdotes about “The Cage”:

Hunter In, Hunter Out

yeoman colt star trek

Roddenberry tapped Jeffrey Hunter to star as Christopher Pike, captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise . Hunter, following NBC's rejection of "The Cage," exited Star Trek , exercising his contractual right not to do “ Where No Man Has Gone Before .” Hunter passed away in 1969.

Starring... Graves? Coburn? Taylor?

yeoman colt star trek

Pre-Hunter, the character was going to be named Captain Robert April or possibly Captain Winter. Among the other actors whose names were at least considered for the part by either Roddenberry or NBC were James Coburn, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., George Segal, Patrick O’Neal, Peter Graves, Rod Taylor and a Canadian fellow named William Shatner.

The Cost of a "Cage"

yeoman colt star trek

NBC spent $360,000 to produce "The Cage.”

The Nimoy Connections

yeoman colt star trek

As Spock, Leonard Nimoy betrayed just a touch of emotion, smiling broadly in one scene, per the director's instructions. Nimoy had guest starred previously on Roddenberry’s series, The Lieutenant . He also, quite fascinatingly, shared the screen for a moment with William Shatner in “The Project Strigas Affair,” an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. that aired on November 24, 1964.

Co-Starring DeForest Kelley as Spock?

yeoman colt star trek

Nimoy won the role after it was reportedly turned down by DeForest Kelley and Martin Landau. As history would have it, after Star Trek concluded its run, Nimoy joined the cast of Mission: Impossible … following the departure of Martin Landau.

Pick One Mr. Roddenberry...

yeoman colt star trek

Majel Barrett played Number One, the ship’s second in command. The story goes that NBC, when they OK-ed a second pilot, compelled Roddenberry to pick either the pointy-eared alien or the female first officer; having both was out of the question. Barrett, who went on to marry Roddenberry, later portrayed Nurse Chapel and provided the voice of most of the computer systems heard throughout the Trek shows and movies. Barrett-Roddenberry passed away on December 18, 2008, not long after voicing the Enterprise computer one last time for Star Trek (2009) .

A Very Different Bones

yeoman colt star trek

Dr. Phillip “Bones” Boyce was embodied by John Hoyt. Portions of his performance can be seen in “ The Menagerie ” two-parter. Trek was but one credit in a long and prolific career. Many TV viewers of a certain age remember Hoyt as Grandpa Stanley Kanisky on the sitcom Gimme a Break! He passed away on September 15, 1991 at the age of 85.

Spot the Differences

yeoman colt star trek

The outfits are markedly different between “The Cage” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” as are the sets. Case in point: The Starfleet insignias in the original pilot are much subtler and less visible than those used later.

Where Be The Red Shirts?

yeoman colt star trek

Here are a few familiar, beloved Trek bits not on view in "The Cage": Captain Kirk, of course. But there were also no phasers, tricorders or red shirts.

A First Among Firsts

yeoman colt star trek

"Check the circuit" was the first line of dialogue uttered in "The Cage," and the honor went to Leonard Nimoy.

She's Still Standing

yeoman colt star trek

The only surviving member of "The Cage" cast is Laurel Goodwin, who played Yeoman J.M. Colt. The actress, following Hunter's departure, was not asked back for "Where No Man Has Gone Before." It was, she told StarTrek.com in a 2016 interview, "very painful." Yet, she still can lay claim to her tidbit of Trek immortality. "I'm the last man standing," she told us. "Yep. Yep, yep. I have to say, it's really quite wonderful, particularly now, at my age, to know that in some small way the work is still there, still alive, that it’s not something everybody has forgotten about."

Will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Cast More Characters from The Cage?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has announced its full cast, and it might just expand the legacy connected to the first Original Series pilot.

Spock, Pike and Number One on Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is poised to serve the quintessence of the spacefaring franchise: The voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise—albeit during the captaincy of James T. Kirk’s immediate predecessor, Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). The Paramount+ series, a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery , has announced the start of its production and revealed its primary cast.

Paramount has also officially welcomed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast members Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune , The Defenders ), Christina Chong ( Line of Duty , Black Mirror ), Celia Rose Gooding (Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill ), Jess Bush ( Playing for Keeps , Les Norton ), and Melissa Navia ( New Amsterdam , Dietland ). However, the characters this new quintet will portray have yet to be revealed. Interestingly, one newcomer in particular bears a noteworthy resemblance to a forgotten character from original Star Trek pilot “The Cage,” whose general era this series will showcase.

While the majority of the diverse bunch do not seem to line up with established characters from “The Cage,” blonde-haired, blue-eyed Aussie actress Jess Bush just might be the exception. Indeed, she resembles a character named Yeoman J.M. Colt (as only indicated in the script), who, played by Laurel Goodwin, was prominently featured in Gene Roddenberry’s initial attempt at a Star Trek pilot, but never manifested again.

Of course, the core trio of Strange New Worlds consists of spun-off characters Captain Pike (Mount), Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) and the ship’s first officer—best known as Number One—Una (Rebecca Romijn). It’s a lineup of bridge officers that matches what was showcased in the 1965 would-be pilot—in which they were played by Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy, and Majel Barrett, respectively—amid an array of laughable early-1960s quasi-future aesthetics (its planet surface scan that spat out perforated printer paper remains hilarious). However, there are notable vacancies from that Enterprise’s crew, which also consisted of the drink-sharing Dr. Philip Boyce (John Hoyt), Lt. José Tyler (Peter Duryea), and the aforementioned Yeoman Colt (Goodwin), who was essentially a prototype for Grace Lee Whitney’s Yeoman Janice Rand.

Original Star Trek pilot "The Cage."

With that set, let’s start with what we do know. While “The Cage” was not part of Star Trek ’s initial NBC airing (it wasn’t released in full form until 1986), its events were nevertheless canonized when footage from it was used to present a backstory for the present state (in the year 2267) of the grievously-injured, wheelchair-bound Captain Pike (Sean Kenney) in 1966 episodes “The Menagerie Parts I and II. ”

The events of the nixed pilot were retconned to have happened 13 years earlier, in 2254, before the events of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 (which even included Melissa George’s modern revival of Susan Oliver’s “Cage” character Vina). Discovery revisits the Enterprise three years later in 2257 and Strange New Worlds will take place after that. Consequently, we won’t necessarily need to have the entire character lineup return here, since—just as with anything in life—people move on to new endeavors and/or assignments in Starfleet. After all, we know that Pike will eventually (by 2265) give up that big chair to a certain fast-rising young officer named Kirk.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Jess Bush and Laurel Goodwin as Yeoman J.M. Colt in "The Cage."

Since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place only a handful of years after “The Cage,” it stands to reason that some of the crew from that era will still be assigned on the Enterprise, which makes the notion—speculative as it may be—of Yeoman J.M. Colt being on the series quite feasible, especially given Bush’s clear resemblance to that classic character. Moreover, Colt’s prospective presence could add an intriguing romantic element. Indeed, a love triangle of sorts was teased in “The Cage,” when Talosian leader the Keeper—who wanted the captives to have children—read the minds of the Enterprise’s captured away party, and tactlessly divulged to Pike, “The female you call ‘Number One’ has the superior mind and would produce highly intelligent children. Although she seems to lack emotion, this is largely a pretense. She has often had fantasies involving you.” Afterwards, he reveals of Colt, “The other new arrival has considered you unreachable but now is realizing this has changed. The factors in her favor are youth and strength, plus unusually strong female drives.” It’s a brief, but consequential exchange that seemed to hint where Roddenberry might have taken this unrealized iteration of Star Trek and its crew dynamic.

The Star Trek: The Original Series Episodes That Best Define the Franchise

It will certainly be interesting to see how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds tackles this revered era in the franchise’s timeline, especially if it attempts to establish its own identity amid the array of existing lore beyond “The Cage.” Will the series have the temerity to introduce Kirk , who’d only be a few years out of Starfleet Academy at this point? Will we get an official live-action introduction to the Enterprise’s first captain, Robert April, who later became an Ambassador-at-Large, and even returned in an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series ? Based on what we’ve seen of the early dynamic on Discovery —notably with Mount’s acclaimed performances as Pike—it seems to be in good hands.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds doesn’t have an official release date as of yet. However, the show is now in production, which makes a premiere on Paramount+ possibly by late-2021 quite promising.

10 Best Fox Animated Series of All Time

The acolyte gets review bombed, setting unfortunate star wars record, every jurassic world: camp cretaceous season, ranked.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds now streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was conceived to address a creative loss at the very beginning of Star Trek . "The Cage" -- the original pilot intended to sell the series to network executives -- was deemed a no-go for reasons that have aged poorly in the extreme. Strange New Worlds picks up the adventures of that crew, who were replaced in the second pilot by the "classic" cast led by William Shatner's Captain Kirk . In the process, it gives them a chance to shine on their own terms, while exploring the creative potential that otherwise would have been lost. Hence, figures like Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley take center stage.

One figure from "The Cage" is still missing, however: Yeoman J.M. Colt, played by Laurel Goodwin in the pilot. While Strange New Worlds isn't obligated to include her, her absence engenders some significant questions. Answering them could form the basis of an outstanding future storyline.

Yeoman Colt Makes a Prominent Appearance in 'The Cage'

"The Cage" takes place a little over a decade before the beginning of The Original Series , with Pike as captain of the Enterprise and a crew of mostly unknowns beneath him. Of that first cast, only Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock successfully crossed over to The Original Series . Strange New Worlds takes place several years after "The Cage," with some members of the crew still onboard, and some replaced by new faces. The missing number includes Colt, who serves as Pike's personal yeoman in "The Cage" and volunteers to beam down with the rescue party when he's captured on Talos IV.

Sadly, she's not given much to do beyond that, and as the Talosians reveal, her primary motivation is unrequited romantic feelings for Pike. It's sadly typical of the predominant attitudes toward women at the time. (The Talosians essentially present her to Pike as the potential member of a harem.) Certainly, the ensuing social awkwardness would explain Colt's departure from the Enterprise after the incident, and with plenty of other characters from "The Cage" onscreen, it's easy enough for Strange New Worlds to simply move on without excessive concern.

Strange New Worlds Could Answer Questions About Colt

Yet at the same time, Colt's role in "The Cage" is prominent enough to make her absence more notable than others. And her wafer-thin motivations are precisely the kind of detail that Strange New Worlds was designed to develop in further detail. "The Cage" was rejected in no small part because executives at the time were nervous about a woman -- Una Chin-Riley -- high on the chain of command. Strange New Worlds has quickly made Una a fan favorite while demonstrating how wrong those assumptions were.

Colt is an ideal character for the same treatment. Not only would it give Star Trek the chance to properly flesh her out -- dispelling her problematic beginnings in the process -- but it would also play into her absence from Strange New Worlds thus far. With the new series now in its second season, her status has matriculated into a reasonably intriguing mystery, and her connection to Pike provides some inherent drama that could easily translate into a strong storyline. She might even return as a regular or recurring member of the crew.

For a time, fans thought that actor Jess Bush would be playing Colt on Strange New Worlds . She was eventually confirmed as Christine Chapel and has been a staple of the show since the beginning. But the misperception demonstrates how much interest in the character is out there, and what an opportunity the new show has with her: all the more because it hasn't addressed it before now.

Majel Barrett (left), Laurel Goodwin (2nd from right), Jeffrey Hunter (right), 'The Cage' in STAR TREK,.

Laurel Goodwin, who made her movie debut opposite Elvis Presley in Girls! Girls! Girls! and starred alongside Jeffrey Hunter in “The Cage,’ the rejected first pilot made for Star Trek , has died. She was 79.

Goodwin died Feb. 25 in Cathedral City, California, her sister, Maureen Scott, announced .

Goodwin also portrayed the elder daughter of Jackie Gleason and Glynis Johns’ characters in Papa’s Delicate Condition (1963) and appeared in The Glory Guys (1965), written by Sam Peckinpah.

After working in the 1964 feature Westerns Stage to Thunder Rock and Law of the Lawless and The Glory Guys , Goodwin was cast as Yeoman J.M. Colt opposite Hunter as Capt. Christopher Pike and Nimoy as Mr. Spock in “The Cage” for Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek .

The pilot, finished in early 1965, didn’t sell, but the producers held on to her, Hunter and Nimoy with the goal of trying again. Meanwhile, Goodwin had a choice: she had offers to make pilots for two network comedies.

“I said, ‘Oh, no. Star Trek is it. I’ve got to do Star Trek . It’s great, it’s gonna be wonderful,'” she recalled in a 2016 interview for StarTrek.com .

When negotiations with Hunter broke down, it was decided that Goodwin was no longer needed. William Shatner came aboard as Capt. James T. Kirk to star later in 1965 in the second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” and NBC picked up the Desilu series.

“In the meantime, I had turned down the two comedies, pulled my name out of consideration,” she said. “They both sold, and both were highly successful.”

Born on Aug. 11, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas, Goodwin and her family moved to San Diego and then San Francisco. She began working as a model when she was 7, then attended Lowell High School and San Francisco State.

After she served as a babysitter for the children of photographer Kurt Gunther, he circulated her photos at Paramount, and the studio wound up signing her to a seven-year contract when she was 19.

“I got in during the very last remnants of the old studio system, which believe me, lasted about six to eight months,” she said in Tom Lisanti’s 2003 book, Drive-in Dream Girls: A Galaxy of B-Movie Starlets of the Sixties . “I did a lot of press when Paramount signed me.”

In Hollywood, she studied acting with Jeff Corey and, when he was away, his fill-in, Nimoy.

In the Hawaii-set Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), Goodwin played the wholesome rich girl Laurel Dodge, who battles with a singer (Stella Stevens) for the affections of Elvis’ tuna fisherman and helps him get the boat he always wanted. The two memorably share a dance in the clever “The Wall Have Ears” number.

Following her Star Trek disappointment, Goodwin appeared on episodes of Get Smart , The Beverly Hillbillies and Mannix before retiring from acting in 1971 and going into nursing.

Footage from “The Cage,” meanwhile, was incorporated into the 1966 two-part Star Trek episode “The Menagerie” before the entire pilot was seen for the first time on VHS in 1986.

Goodwin co-produced the Burt Reynolds -Loni Anderson film Stroker Ace (1983) alongside her husband, Walter Wood, who had acquired the rights to the book on which the movie was based. They had a 43-year relationship that ended with his death in 2010.

Star Trek Reveals One of the 21st Century's Biggest Scientific Breakthroughs Is Illegal in the Future

Star trek is finally ready to embrace the real final frontier (not space), seven of nine just delivered star trek's sickest burn.

  • The position of yeoman in Star Trek originated from the US Navy and served as assistants to the Captain, performing administrative work and attending to various duties.
  • In the original series, women rarely served as high-ranking officers, so the yeoman position allowed for more female representation, often portraying them as attractive objects of desire.
  • In modern Star Trek shows, the position of yeoman has been abandoned due to advancements in technology, making their administrative work unnecessary and easily automated.

Though various yeomen appeared over the course of Star Trek: The Original Series, subsequent Star Trek series have rarely featured crew members with that title. The most prominent yeoman character was Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney), who served as the yeoman for Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) aboard the USS Enterprise. After Whitney's departure from TOS following eight episodes of the first season, various young women filled the position of yeoman for the rest of the series. Though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced Captain Pike's (Anson Mount) previous yeoman, Zac Nguyen (David Huynh) in "Among the Lotus Eaters," Pike does not seem to have a yeoman anymore.

In the original unaired pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series , Yeoman Colt (Laurel Goodwin) was offered by the Talosians as a potential mate for Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), and Pike himself commented on the strangeness of having a woman on the bridge. In the TOS episode "The Corbomite Maneuver," Captain Kirk made a similar comment about Yeoman Rand. It was a trope in the media of the 1960s for men in positions of power to have young, attractive women as their secretaries, and the yeoman position played into this trope for Star Trek, but modern shows have done away with it for a very good reason.

What Is A Yeoman In Star Trek?

The position of yeoman, like many of the Starfleet officer positions, comes from the US Navy. In the Navy, a yeoman works in an office setting, seeing to administrative work. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a yeoman is defined as "an attendant or officer in a royal or noble household" or "a person attending or assisting another." The yeomen of Star Trek combine the Navy version of a yeoman with this more general definition. On a typical starship, a yeomen served as assistants to the Captain, attending to various duties and seeing to the Captain's needs, much like a secretary.

Yeomen could hold various ranks, from enlisted crewmen to junior officers. For example, Yeoman Rand on Star Trek: The Original Series was a non-commissioned Starfleet officer who sometimes accompanied the Captain on away missions in addition to her duties aboard the ship. On TOS , women rarely served as high-ranking officers, so the position of yeomen allowed there to be more women among the show's cast. In fact, the yeomen of TOS were almost exclusively attractive young women, and this sometimes led to inappropriate comments from male officers. In many episodes, the main purpose of a female yeoman was to be an object of desire for the surrounding men.

Why Star Trek Abandoned The Yeoman Rank

In an organization as advanced as Starfleet and a society as supposedly utopian as the United Federation of Planets , the need for yeomen on starships makes little sense. With the computers and data PADDs available on the ships and technology like food replicators, the position of Yeoman feels like an unnecessary one. Much of the administrative-type work a yeoman in the Navy does, for example, could be automated with the technology of the Star Trek universe.

After Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek shows would have ensigns or other lower-level officers perform any necessary functions of a yeoman. By the time of Star Trek: The Next Generation , starship captains even have food replicators in their quarters, meaning no one needed to bring them meals or coffee. While the roles of yeomen, and the way they were treated, could have been updated for the modern era, the advancements of Star Trek ' s far future render the position obsolete.

Janice Rand, 2266

Yeoman Janice Rand

USS Enterprise-A yeoman with honor cord, 2287

An unnamed yeoman aboard the USS Enterprise -A

Yeoman was a Starfleet title used during the 23rd century . They functioned as personal assistants , performing various tasks, such as carrying a Starfleet tricorder and retrieving information for a starship 's captain , announcing one's arrival with a boatswain's whistle , or bringing them meals . Throughout the 2260s and 2270s , yeomen were typically – but not exclusively – young women; there were also male yeomen during the 2250s and the 2290s . ( TOS : " The Cage "; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country )

Some yeomen, such as Janice Rand , were enlisted personnel during their time in this position. There were different rates of yeoman, all the way down to "third class." Seventeen-year-old Tina Lawton carried this rate in 2266 . ( TOS : " Charlie X ")

Yeomen could also have held the rank of a junior officer , as seen with a yeoman assigned to the USS Enterprise -A , who wore an officer's uniform with the rank of lieutenant junior grade . ( Star Trek V: The Final Frontier )

In 2267 of the mirror universe , Marlena Moreau told James T. Kirk that she would have a yeoman help her move her things to Commander Kenner 's quarters if he was rejecting her. ( TOS : " Mirror, Mirror ")

Background information [ ].

Gene Roddenberry always imagined an attractive young woman as his Star Trek captain's personal assistant, writing the first yeoman on Trek as Chris Pike 's young Yeoman Colt in " The Cage ". However, Pike states in the episode that he cannot get used to seeing women on the bridge with the exception of Number One , indicating that his previous yeoman was male.

The following information regarding the yeoman was taken from the Star Trek Writers/Directors Guide (third revision):

Played by a succession of young actresses, always lovely. One such character has been well established in the first year, "Yeoman Janice Rand", played by Grace Lee Whitney . Whether Yeoman Rand or a new character provided by the writer, this female Yeoman serves Kirk as his combination Executive Secretary - Valet - Military aide . As such, she is always capable, a highly professional career girl. As with all female Crewman aboard, during duty hours she is treated co-equal with males of the same rank, and the same level of efficient performance is expected. The Yeoman often carries a small over-the-shoulder case, a Tricorder , about the size of a small handbag, which is also an electronic recorder-camera-sensor combinations, immediately available to the Captain should he be away from his Command Console .

In the words of actress Grace Lee Whitney , she viewed her role as a yeoman to be, " Her duties were that of a right-hand woman, a girl Friday . In other words, she took care of Kirk's personal needs, like a valet would do. I had a pet name I used to call myself: a 'space geisha .' " ( Starlog #105, April 1986 , p. 48)

During the run of the original series, only female yeomen were featured. Male yeomen later appeared on screen in both Star Trek: The Animated Series and the Star Trek films .

In foreign translations of Star Trek , the yeomen of TOS were usually not referred as yeoman, as their title was changed to "corporal", "sergeant", or another naval rank.

Apocrypha [ ]

The Pocket TOS novel The Captain's Oath noted that Kirk's yeoman had an office close to the captain's quarters .
