Kiss Announce ‘Absolute Final Shows’ of Their Farewell Tour

Nearly three years after Kiss announced the final leg of what was supposed to be their final trek, the band has plotted the final final string of dates on their End of the Road Tour .

Trumpeted as “the absolute final shows of their final tour,” the farewell leg kicks off Oct. 29 in Austin, Texas and hits arenas across the U.S. and Canada before the makeup comes off — for good? — with a two-night stand at Kiss’ hometown Madison Square Garden in New York.

“Kiss was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago. It will be a privilege and honor to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started,” the band said of the final two gigs, Dec. 1 and 2, at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

Kiss Debuts Digital Avatars That Will Keep the Band ‘Forever Young and Forever Iconic’

The rock band is the first in the U.S. to immortalize its performances with a digital recreation

On Saturday, the members of the rock band Kiss concluded the final show of their farewell tour with a big reveal: After leaving the stage, each band member was replaced with a digital avatar, who proceeded to perform the song “God Gave Rock ’n’ Roll to You.” As the Guardian ’s Michael Sun writes, “They used their encore to debut their afterlife.”

Four years since the start of the farewell tour and over 20 years since their original farewell tour, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer walked off the stage at Madison Square Garden to make room for four versions of their younger selves: Demon, the Starchild, Catman and Spaceman. This “holographic rapture,” as Burt Helm of Fast Company calls it, makes Kiss the first American band to recreate itself digitally.

The virtual performers, however, were not meant to be exact copies. Towering unnaturally large over the audience, the avatars appeared to have superpowers, like wings and crackling pink fingertips—a true “superhero version of the band,” reports Maria Sherman for the Associated Press (AP).

“What we’ve accomplished has been amazing, but it’s not enough. The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are,” says Stanley in a video . “It’s exciting for us to go the next step and see Kiss immortalized.”

The avatars, created using motion capture technology, are the work of a collaboration between Industrial Light & Magic  (George Lucas’ special-effects company) and Swedish conglomerate Pophouse Entertainment. This wasn’t the two companies’ first rodeo: They previously partnered to create the virtual “ ABBA Voyage ” show in London, which was performed by the band’s digital avatars and made over $2 million a week .

“Kiss could have a concert in three cities in the same night across three different continents,” Per Sundin, CEO of Pophouse Entertainment, tells the AP. “That’s what you could do with this.”

Though the band is the first in the United States to commit to digital avatars, Kiss “has long pushed the boundaries of technology and spectacle” with stunts such as fire-breathing, floating drum kits and blood-spitting even in their early years, as Fast Company points out.

Now, however, “we can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we’ve never dreamed of before,” says Simmons in the band’s video. “The technology is going to make Paul [Stanley] jump higher than he’s ever done before.”

After Saturday’s surprise, the details of the band’s future remain unclear. While Sundin muses on the possibility of rock operas and musicals, one fact remains certain: Kiss isn’t going anywhere. “If you think you’re going to get rid of us, I’m afraid that’s not going to happen,” Simmons confirms.

In the video, Stanley says he’s sometimes asked when the band will stop. His response? “The band will never stop because we don’t own the band. The fans own the band, the world owns the band.”

KISS performed their final concert, but have they reached the end of the road?

Kiss announces final tour dates ever; Gene Simmons says he will 'cry like a 9-year-old'

It really is the end of the road for Kiss .

Most likely. We think. So they say.

But this time we’ll believe Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons when they announced Wednesday on Sirius XM’s “The Howard Stern Show” that the band’s final  concerts will be Dec. 1-2 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“We’re finishing up where we started,” Stanley told Stern, flanked by his bandmates in full makeup. “When you come to see the show, it’s awesome. … It’s clearly a kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll show. It’s everything Kiss – just amped up and ramped up. We’re giving it everything we have.”

Simmons added that he was sure he would “cry like a 9-year-old girl whose foot is being stepped on” during Kiss’ last moments on stage.

The closing location makes sense for the venerable rockers, who burst out of New York 50 years ago.

Tickets for the final dates of The End of the Road Tour will be available at 10 a.m. March 6 for a Kiss Army presale at kissonline.com/tour . The general sale begins at 10 a.m. March 10 at livenation.com.

The band’s goodbye tour kicked off in January 2019 and had been set to end at Madison Square Garden in July 2021. But COVID-19 postponements resulted in delayed dates that weren’t resumed until August 2021.

This final leg will begin Oct. 29 at the Moody Center in Austin and roll through Canada, Los Angeles, Knoxville, Baltimore and other cities before the career finale.

Despite a few personnel changes on guitar and drums throughout the years – Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer handle the respective duties on this tour – Kiss has always soldiered on.

The pioneering rockers have been lauded as much for their ingenious stage personas – Stanley remains the Starchild and Simmons, with his wicked tongue, the Demon – as their astute business acumen, selling everything from Kiss-branded lunchboxes to caskets during their five-decade career.

And, with more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, an inventory of guitar-crunching hits (“Detroit Rock City,” “Shout It Out Loud” “Calling Dr. Love,” “Lick It Up” and “Rock and Roll All Nite” among their mindlessly fun fist-pumpers) and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Kiss legacy will live on beyond their final bows.
