In fact, it is one of the most well-known vineyards in the Ozark region and one of the best in Springdale.

Sassafras is a bit off the beaten path tucked away in a nice wooded area among rolling hills and fields of cows.

It gives a good feeling of relaxation and a respite from the busy world.

They not only make wonderful wines, but they also produce their own grapes in a beautiful vineyard.

They also rent out facilities for weddings, family reunions, and birthday celebrations.

What an excellent way to hang out after work and enjoy the patio vibes in what feels like the middle of the woods.

They offer flights or you can have two free samples and then choose a glass of wine for purchase.

Sit out on the back deck and enjoy the lovely surroundings of thick foliaged trees.

You can also purchase a cheese or you can walk around, and order a pizza. The pizza is pretty good too.

The staffs are incredibly friendly and accommodating.

• Experiment with the  dates of each flight . This can be time consuming, but if you're dedicated, you can shave hundreds of dollars off your total cost by simply finding the cheapest dates for each flight.
• Multi-city and  return flights are often better value than booking many one-way flights when they can all be fulfilled by the same airline/alliance. For example, Virgin Atlantic has routes from New York to London, London to Shanghai, and Shanghai to New York, so making one multi-city booking with this single airline will be cheaper than several individual bookings with different airlines.
• Skyscanner prefers partner airlines that can fulfil the entire itinerary you submit, which doesn't always get you the best price on complex itineraries. So if you have a lot of destinations, split your searches into 3-4 destinations at a time . For example, instead of submitting New York > London  > Paris > Beijing > New York as a single search, try searching New York > London > Paris as one search, and Paris > Prague > Beijing > New York as a second search. You don't have to worry about this on Kiwi.com , which always mixes and matches airlines to get the best results.

So, what's the cheapest option?

In our tests, the DIY approach is always cheaper, but it depends on the kind of trip you're taking. Round the world tickets can cost anywhere from $1,500 USD to $20,000 USD . The price varies greatly, and depends on your departure point, number of flights, distance flown, continents flown to, and flight class.

On the other hand, regular flight ticket prices are all over the map, dependent mostly on supply and demand. Sometimes a flight across continents can be even cheaper than a flight within your own country. Since regular flight tickets include budget airlines , sale and error fares , and you can still take advantage of discounts with partner airlines,  booking your own flight tickets has always been cheaper for us .

A Thrifty Case Study: A Round the World Trip from New York City

As an example, let's find the best price for the following round the world trip:  New York City > London > Paris > Prague > Beijing > Hong Kong > New York City . We want to go in  April and May , and we are booking now in  January . We'll start on Tuesday, April 10, and schedule each consecutive flight for the following Tuesday.

Option 1: A round the world travel agent

Not exactly thrifty, and up to 3x the advertised price of the travel agent! True round the world tickets require strategic planning, so using a travel agent's expertise can save you time and money. But let's take a look at booking regular airline tickets yourself…

Option 3: Book your own tickets using Kiwi.com and Skyscanner

Using the Kiwi.com multicity search feature, we enter our full itinerary, and within minutes, we have a variety of options from $1,390 – $1,434 USD .

As we mentioned, Skyscanner usually just shows results from  partner airlines that can fulfill a ticket for the entire route. This route is pretty complex, and it's unlikely one airline alliance could fulfill it all, so let's  break it up .

After half an hour of trying different combinations of multi-city and one-way searches, the cheapest combination I could find for these dates was

• New York City > London > Paris > Prague: $390 USD
• Prague > Beijing: $283 USD
• Beijing > Hong Kong: $119 USD
• Hong Kong > New York City: $493 USD
• TOTAL TRIP COST: $1,285 USD

This is the cheapest option, beating Kiwi.com by only $105. What's going on here? In short, trial and error. The first batch of airlines aren't partners, but Skyscanner sometimes lets you mix and match airlines by using Kiwi.com for booking. And although there are partner airlines to fulfill the rest of the route, Hong Kong Airlines is an independent budget airline with competitive pricing, so it ended up being cheaper to book the flights separately in order to include their fares.

You can take this even further by testing different dates in your itinerary, as well as the order of your flights. As you can see, the process can be time consuming, but a little time rewards you with hundreds or thousands of dollars saved!

What are the alternatives?

Regional flight passes.

While not a round the world ticket in itself, this type of flight pass might be more sensible for your trip, depending whether you'll be flying a lot in one region versus globally. Your trip must be in a continuous forward direction, East or West, between Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3. Backtracking within a continent is generally permitted, however some exclusions apply.

Your adventure can last from 10 days up to a year. Travel must be completed within 12 months of your original departure date.

Your trip must start and finish in the same city.

You must cross both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean on your journey.

The Underrated Side Of Zion National Park Almost No One Visits

Zion National Park sees 4.5 million guests every year, but very few of them visit Kolob Canyons. Scenic and quiet, Kolob Canyons is a must-visit.

Zion National Park was the third most-visited national park in 2023, with over 4.5 million visitors. As summer enters full swing, Zion is inundated with travelers from around the world. Over 500,000 people enter the park every month between May and September (for comparison, many parks don't receive that many visitors in a year). That equates to 10,000 to 15,000 guests every single day (and don't get us started on weekend numbers).

One of the biggest things we learned from our first trip to Zion National Park is that that much company can have a serious impact on the overall enjoyment of a park visit. So what is the solution? Don't do what we did, getting trapped in the canyon with countless other people. Instead, take an adventure to the relatively undiscovered Kolob Canyons side of the park.

Disconnected from the rest of Zion, Kolob is its own little world, one with all the beauty but none of the crowds. After missing out on Kolob Canyons during our first Zion trip, we did some research so we could explore this hidden gem the second time around.

Here's the inside scoop on the most underrated side of Zion National Park, Kolob Canyons.

Kolob Canyons is part of Zion National Park , which charges a $35 per vehicle entrance fee. That fee covers entrance to the park for seven consecutive days, and grants admission via any of the three Zion National Park entrances.

Forget Zion: Visit Utah's Most Underrated National Park

Getting to kolob canyons, kolob canyons is not connected to the rest of zion national park, making it harder to reach.

We did some amazing things during our 48 hours in Zion National Park , and drove back towards Salt Lake City rejuvenated and thrilled at how much we were able to do. About an hour after leaving the Zion South Entrance, I spotted it — another Zion National Park entrance and visitor center, right off I-15. Time was up, we had to keep going, and I was left to pine for this unexplored corner of Zion.

To reach this side of the park, travelers have to leave the main part of Zion and the gateway town of Springdale, reconnect with the main north-south highway I-15, and head north to Salt Lake City.

One of the ways we saved money on our trip to Zion National Park was by staying in St. George instead of the expensive Springdale. St. George is on I-15 and about 50 minutes from the south entrance of Zion and also less than an hour from the Kolob Canyons entrance, making it easier for visitors to choose which area they want to explore that day.

The Kolob Canyons entrance is right off the freeway, in a classic "blink-and-you-miss-it" situation. Unlike the line of cars waiting in Springdale, the quiet Kolob Canyons entrance has no traffic.

I remember watching a single car check in at the gate as we drove by, turning into the mostly empty visitor center parking lot. Despite being more convenient to drive to than the rest of Zion, the disconnection from the rest of the park has kept Kolob Canyons off the map.

Hiking in Kolob Canyons

Like zion canyon, kolob canyons is full of scenic hiking and awe-inspiring overlooks.

Zion National Park is famous for its hiking trails, particularly the Narrows and Angel's Landing, the most dangerous trail in the US . Zion has hiking trails for every kind of hiker , and several of the best ones are hidden in Kolob Canyons.

While Kolob Canyons's three main trails aren't as iconic as those in Zion Canyon, they are just as scenic (and infinitely less crowded).

None of the trails in Kolob Canyons are dog-friendly. The only dog-friendly hike in Zion National Park is the Pa'rus Trail, which starts at the South Entrance Visitor's Center.

7 Most Popular Zion Hiking Trails, Plus Easier Alternatives

Kolob Canyons is particularly well-known for its challenging hikes. The Kolob Arch Trail, for example, is considered one of the hardest hikes in Zion National Park, an impressive accolade in a park full of death-defying trails.

The La Verkin Creek Trail leads hikers through this corner of the park for nearly seven miles, culminating in the Kolob Arch. At 14 miles round-trip, this trail is easily an all-day outing, and one of the best ways to explore Kolob Canyons on foot.

What To Know Of Hiking To ​​​​​​​Kolob Arch: The Largest Natural Arch Of Zion National Park

Hikers looking for something a little lighter can still find a good trail in Kolob Canyons. Timber Creek Overlook Trail is a short easy to moderate trail leading to a dramatic Kolob Canyons Overlook.

Similar to the popular Canyon Overlook Trail in Zion Canyon near Mt. Carmel tunnel, the Timber Creek Overlook is short and sweet, but with a stunning view. Unlike the classic Canyon Overlook Trail, however, there won't be hundreds of other people to shimmy by along the way.

Taylor Creek Trail

The third prominent trail in Kolob Canyons, the Taylor Creek Trail, falls right in the middle of the other two trails. The Taylor Creek Trail historic buildings and even an etched double arch beginning to form, reminiscent of Arches National Park.

The trail also requires crisscrossing Taylor Creek, for those who think they are missing out being so far from the famous Narrows. A more moderate snapshot of Kolob Canyons, Taylor Creek has a little bit of everything that makes Zion unique.

Hiking groups in Kolob Canyons are limited to 12 people. Groups larger than 12 are required to split up and hike separate trails to help protect the delicate canyon crust.

Other Things To Do In Kolob Canyons

Scenic driving and overnight camping offer more ways to enjoy the quiet side of zion.

One of the hardest parts of visiting Kolob Canyons is that, since it is so far from the rest of the park, guests generally have to commit to a full day on this side of the park. While the trails are sure to keep most visitors plenty busy, those who opt for the shorter trails may be looking for some other activities to fill out the day.

Kolob Canyon does have its own scenic driving route, which runs for five miles to the Timber Creek Overlook area. Along the way, travelers can enjoy the towering red cliff walls and surprisingly green vegetation fed by the canyon creeks.

Given the remote location of Kolob Canyons, many hikers opt to turn their day trip into an overnight excursion. Backcountry camping is a popular activity in Kolob Canyon as hikers seek out a rare quiet moment in one of the busiest national parks in the US.

Zion National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the US, and yet the Kolob Canyons area remains unexplored by a majority of guests. Many, like us on our first Zion trip, don't even realize Kolob Canyons is there, as this part of the park cannot be reached from Zion Canyon.

Despite being an hour from the rest of the park, Kolob Canyons has plenty to make it worth a visit, including challenging hiking trails, an easy, scenic drive, and quiet overnight camping opportunities. Particularly for those looking to escape the Zion crowds, Kolob Canyons is a must-visit underrated destination.

We're 82-year-old Best Friends Who Traveled Around the World in 80 Days — Here's What It Was Like

Sandy Hazelip and Ellie Hamby first met in their 60s and decided to traverse the world in 80 days in their 80s.

For Travel + Leisure’s column Traveling As, we’re talking to travelers about what it’s like to explore the world through their unique perspectives. We chatted with Sandy Hazelip and Ellie Hamby , two 82-year-old single great grandmothers, who travel around the globe together with an infectious, positive spirit. Their adventures will be documented in a Penguin Random House book called "Happy Place," out next year.

Sandy Hazelip: I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, in a very modest family and got married when I was almost 20 years old to a wonderful person. Our son developed diabetes when he was a baby, so I became interested in learning about medicine. When I was 34 years old, I told my husband I wanted to go to college to become a doctor. From day one, he was my cheerleader. I started medical school when I was 39 and opened my practice in 1985. 

Then, my husband died in 1999. But before he became ill, he mentioned we should take our grandchildren on mission trips. Six months after he passed, a young physician told me he was going to be at a medical missions workshop the following weekend in Dallas. I went and met Ellie Hamby and her husband, who were the directors of the Zambia Medical Mission . I started going on the mission and Ellie and I became good friends.

Ellie Hamby: I grew up as a farm girl in Oklahoma and lived in a very small town until I finished high school. I got married and then went off to college. My husband was a professor at Abilene Christian University. We wound up going to Zambia and lived there for six years in the 1980s. When we came back to the university, we were approached about directing a medical mission. 

Neither one of us were medical [professionals], but I’ve been known to organize everything all of my life. We started organizing a medical mission to Zambia in the 1990s. It's one of the world's largest medical missions, and I'm still directing it. We see 2,000 to 3,000 patients a day over six days a week at the clinic. Sandy's been one of the medical doctors, going every other year for the last 20-something years.

About five years after Sandy's husband passed away, my husband passed away in a tennis accident. Sandy called me about a month after. I was still adjusting to his sudden death. She said, 'I'm moving my medical practice to Abilene and I don’t want to leave my home in Eastland, so I need a bed a couple of nights a week. If you would give me a bed, I'll take you out to eat.'

That was 19 years ago. Except when we're on trips, she's generally at my house one or two nights a week. We stayed up late, drank coffee, and started realizing we like to do things alike. Our friendship developed out of two terrible tragedies, but it was a beautiful thing because tragedy hits all of us. That doesn't mean your life is over. We both had phenomenal husbands. We loved them dearly. But we did develop this great friendship. 

Our outlook on life is similar: We're very happy people, we believe in the goodness of humanity, and we're not scared to try new things. 

I had already done quite a bit of traveling, having been to about 115 countries.

About three years after Sandy started staying at my house, we took our first trip together in 2008. We went on the Trans-Siberian Railway — not the tourist train. We went on the second-class people's train all the way. 

Hazelip: Our third trip together was in 2011 — we were in Syria when the war broke out.

Hamby: We were sleeping in a Bedouin tent in Palmyra in the Syrian desert. We had already been all through Syria on public buses — two 72-year-old women with backpacks.

The problem was that there were no tourists in Palmyra and we were headed to Jordan, but we hadn’t paid the hotel and there were no ATMs in the city, nor did they take credit cards. Mohammad at the hotel organized everything for us — his mother cooked us a wonderful meal that night and he arranged for us to go with a driver to Damascus about five hours away.

We got there and the whole plaza was lined with the military holding AK-47s. Our driver went up to them and must have said these two old women need to get cash out of an ATM. They put down their guns. We prayed there would be money — and there was. Then, Mohammad told us to get in a white unmarked car on the side of the road to take us to Jordan — and it did. So, we already had some wild experiences.

Hazelip : We are old enough to remember the movie and book, "Around the World in 80 Days," so two or three years prior to turning 80, I said to Ellie, 'Why don’t we go around the world in 80 days when we’re 80?'

Hamby: My first reaction was, 'What?!' About 30 seconds later, 'Why not?' We told our family and friends. I think most of them felt like it would never happen. It’s a pretty daunting thing, and we didn't realize just how daunting it was until we completed it and got all this recognition.

We used the Oneworld Alliance Round the World fare , which is great. You have to go to six continents and it gives you 16 flight segments. You circumnavigate the world in one direction. That made it handy and saved us money. 

Hazelip: You can make your own itinerary — just follow their rules. When we got to a country and wanted to see more things, we would use our airline miles and fly to those other places. Occasionally, we had to buy a ticket. Our average hotel room for the whole 80 days was $29 a person per night — and that usually included breakfast.

Hamby: Our best bargain was $13.50 at the Royal Pyramids Inn in Cairo. We had to enter through an alley, but when we got to the rooftop, there were the pyramids. And then the lights show at night — we watched it for free.

Hazelip: When other women say they would love to take a trip with us, the first thing I do is look at their hands. If they have well-manicured fingernails, they probably don't want to travel with us.

Hamby: We don't have a travel agent. We book every hotel ourselves; we book our flights, and when we have a problem, we have to solve it because there's no one we can call. And we don't have any men carrying our luggage.

Hazelip: We had originally planned to go on our Around the World trip when we were 80, but COVID shut it down, so we went when we were 81, and our theme was…

Hamby: We started in Antarctica . It's one of the most awe-inspiring places to set foot on in the world. To stand there and do a 360 around you — what you see is just beyond belief. The immenseness of the Antarctic, the ice mountains, the icebergs, the water, penguins everywhere — it's unbelievable.

Hazelip: Then, we were in the Arctic Circle. We had a driver in Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland. One day he said, 'Would you like to do a husky sleigh ride today?' I thought it was going to be some tiny ride like at the Texas fair, so we said sure.

Hamby: He had a whole pack of huskies. We went for four miles through the forest, turning sharp corners and holding on for dear life. And it was minus four degrees.

Hazelip: We got back and said, 'Wow, that was fun!' Another day, he asked if we wanted to see the reindeer farm. Turns out, it was his family's farm where he grew up, and we got to feed the reindeer. 

Hamby: Sandy and I don't often plan. Things just kind of happen. We really rely on locals to organize things for us. In Bali, for example, we got a driver for $50 for eight hours. When we saw something we wanted to do, we could do it. We saw this sign that said, 'Happy Swing,' so he turned back. They were the most fun swings over rice paddies.

Hazelip: At the end, we said we did not go on a vacation — people get tired when they go on vacation. We went on an adventure and every adventure just ramped us up for the next one. 

Ellie found a saying that I absolutely love: 'The world is a book and he who does not travel only reads one page.'

One of the world wonders we had planned to see on the trip was Machu Picchu , but the political unrest shut it down. Ellie and I are eternal optimists. We were sure by the time we got there, it would be over. Three days before our flight was scheduled to Peru, we had to make the decision to cancel that. 

So, this year, we are now in South America with Machu Picchu being the last place we stop. We are having a wonderful time and our new theme is...

Hazelip and Hamby: We are 82 and we're not through.

Hamby: We're up in La Paz, Bolivia, at more than 12,000 feet. We climbed in the Valley of the Moon the other day and a whole group of Bolivians applauded when we got all the way to the top.

On this trip, we fished for piranhas in the Amazon. I caught three, but Sandy caught the biggest one. We ate it that night in piranha stew, which was pretty good. We also went alligator hunting — and caught two. I went swimming with pink dolphins in the Amazon. We're not afraid to venture out.

Hazelip: We're not afraid to have fun.

Hamby: Also, for your information, between Sandy and I, we have four artificial knees. Those things happen to all of us as we get older, and you’ve got to work hard, do physical therapy, and stay positive.

Hazelip: Ellie's family is accustomed to her wild travels. My family is trying to get used to it. I promise I will send them text messages every day. I let them know we're safe.

Hamby : In our planning, there are some things our kids don't need to know. They didn't need to know we were going piranha fishing, for example. Why would we tell them and have them freak out? They can find out later when they see pictures of the piranha we caught.

We'll keep traveling as long as we can — and we can come up with sayings. We don’t have one for 83 and 84, but for 85, it will be “We’re 85 and still alive.” We hope to be able to travel as long as our health holds out. So far, we're fine, but we know we're getting older and there's going to be a time we can't. We don't let age determine what we want to do. We're fearless travelers, we don't like nightlife, and we're not looking for men. We're just two single women having an adventure.

Hazelip: We have one wonderful adventure after another every single day.

Hamby : The language of South America has been a bit trickier than most, but Sandy and I say there's one universal language, and that's a smile. We use that over and over and over again.

The Narrows, Zion National Park

Soaring, picturesque walls climb a thousand feet tall in the narrowest section of the breathtaking Zion Canyon. Hikers should be prepared to get their feet wet once the trail enters the Virgin River as a part of The Narrows , and you can choose how far you want to hike—from 4 to 10 miles or more.

Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan

The Paro Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) was built in on the site of a cave set into a cliff 3,000 meters above the Paro valley in the late 17th century, and views of it are just as breathtaking today. The hike to it is about 4 miles round trip and gains 1,700 feet in elevation. Hikers should allow time to visit tour the monastery's incredible temples after their journey.

Kalalau Trail, Kauai, Hawaii

Welcome to paradise. Traverse the rugged, scenic Nāpali Coast on Kalalau Trail for 11 miles from beach to beach to take in valleys and vistas, waterfalls and sea caves. To hit the highlights, take the trail from Kee Beach to Hanakapiai Beach for a 4-mile roundtrip hike.

Five Lakes Trail, Zermatt, Switzerland

Take in the majesty of the Matterhorn and its reflection in three of the five Alpine lakes you'll see on this Five Lakes Trail around Zermatt's most gorgeous scenery. The trail is just over 6 miles, and you can stop to swim in Leisee and Grünsee lakes too.

Plitvice Lakes Loop, Croatia

Springdale man sentenced for transporting child pornography

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A Springdale man was sentenced on Wednesday for transporting child pornography, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Western District of Arkansas.

Jonathan David Attaway, 32, was sentenced to more than seven years in prison without the possibility of parole for one count of transportation of child pornography.

In January 2022, task force officers and agents with Homeland Security Investigators received information that someone from Northwest Arkansas uploaded images of child pornography to a Google account, according to court documents.

Harrison man sentenced to 55 years for production of child pornography

Law enforcement identified the Google account user as Attaway during the resulting investigation.

A search warrant for Attaway’s residence was executed and authorities found numerous devices containing child pornography.

Evidence presented at the sentencing revealed that Attaway possessed images of minors as young as six years old engaged in sexually explicit activity, according to the release.

The case was investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce and Homeland Security Investigations.
