Lauren Critzer

Uncorking austin: your insider guide to the best winery tours.

Pop the cork and pour yourself a glass, we are about to delve into Austin’s wine making landscape. With posh tasting rooms, alluring vineyards, rampant Texas hospitality, and diverse wine varieties that would make even Dionysus swoon, Austin, Texas is undeniably a winelover’s paradise.

The Underrated Wine Paradise

Nicknamed as the “Live Music Capital of the World”, Austin is famed for its vibrant music scene, but less known for its active wine culture. The city boasts a diverse array of wineries, each as distinctive as the grapes ripened in its vineyards, and home to a wine culture that beautifully complements the city’s Texas barbecue and rock and roll vibe.

The local terroir, bountiful with varying soil types, provides suitable conditions for growing several grape varieties. This terrain diversity, coupled with the innovative techniques of local winemakers, result in wines that exude a unique depth of flavors, so distinct, that they have successfully tasted their way into the global wine scene.

Exploring Austin one Sip at a Time: The Top Winery Tours

Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a budding enthusiast, our local winery tours have something exquisite to offer if you are ready to embark on a journey exploring flavors and techniques that have shaped Austin’s wine scene.

Fall Creek Vineyards

Considered a cornerstone of Austin’s wine culture, Fall Creek Vineyards has a rich winemaking history exceeding four decades. Bathed in age-old tradition and unwavering dedication, they’ve continued to refine their fruits and finetune their techniques. Here’s why Fall Creek deserves your attention:

  • Award-winning Wines: Their collection of wines, like the red Granache and the white Chenin Blanc, have garnered both national and international appreciation.
  • Scenic Vineyards: Nestled beside Lake Buchanan, the vineyards offer inspiring panoramic views perfect for budding photographers and nature lovers.
  • Educational Tours: Learn about grape cultivation, wine making, and aging processes, all while enjoying a scenic drive through the breezy vineyards.

The Austin Winery

Unleash your inner urbanite at The Austin Winery , a gem tucked away in the bustling South Congress District, known for its modern approach to traditional winemaking. Here’s what you can look forward to here:

  • Curated Wines: They source high-quality grapes from across different regions and spare no effort to produce finely crafted wines.
  • Community building: The open, laid-back atmosphere embraces a communal spirit, encouraging patrons to bond over a shared love of fine wine.
  • Blend Your Wine: Participate in an exclusive wine-blending session to mix and match varietals and create your custom blend.

Duchman Family Winery

Experience the perfect blend of Italian tradition and Texan innovation at the quaint Duchman Family Winery located within the serene Driftwood region of the Texas Wine Country. The winery promises a unique unison of wine tasting and gastronomy. Here’s what’s on the offering:

  • Picturesque Location: Adorned with Italian verandas, rich foliage, and a romantic vineyard, the winery is a picture-perfect escape from the bustling city.
  • Texas Terroir showcased: The Duchman wines capture the Texan terroir in their taste and versatility.
  • Classy Environment: The tranquility of the picnic area, the taste of gourmet food paired perfectly with their wines makes these tasting sessions a truly relaxing experience.

Trailing the Austin Wine Culture

The authenticity of Austin’s rich wine culture can be fully experienced through its iconic wine trails. Covering an assortment of wineries, these trails narrate countless tales of flavor and technique captured in each bottle.

Texas Hill Country Wine Trail

Discover over 50 distinct wineries scattered throughout Texas Hill Country Wine Trail . A drive through this trail promises:

  • Enchanting Vineyards: From boutique family-owned vineyards to large scale estates, the entrancing vineyard landscapes resonate stories of dedication and passion.
  • Wine Narratives: Understand the backstory of your preferred wines, their making techniques, and the terroir talks from wine stewards themselves.
  • Extensive Varietals: From the white Viognier to the red Tempranillo to the blends, the trails present a gargantuan collection of wine varietals to please every palate.

Driftwood Wine Trail

Driftwood Wine Trail – a scenic tour home to some of the finest examples of Texan winemaking. This trail has:

  • An extensive countryside view that flows along famous vineyards like Duchman Family Winery and Driftwood Estate Winery.
  • Insights into indigenous winemaking traditions and blends from local cultivators.
  • Opportunities to participate in informative winery tours and wine club member exclusives.

Tips for a Memorable Winery Tour

Embarking on your wine tour requires some planning;

  • Book in Advance : Wineries recommend reservations for tours and tastings, especially on weekends.
  • Safe Travel : Assign a designated driver to ensure a safe return trip.
  • A Slow-Paced Experience : Wine tasting isn’t a race, savor each sip before exploring the next, dress comfortably, and stay hydrated.
  • Local Varieties : Don’t forget to try indigenous varietals like the Tempranillo and Viognier, the hallmark of Austin’s vineyards.

Celebrating Austin’s Wine Culture

With stunning vineyards, diverse vintages, and hosts who charm with their Texas charm, Austin has it all to give you the tour of a lifetime. So, whether you’re winery hopping in Driftwood or attending a vineyard tour at Duchman, rest assured knowing your glass will always be filled to the brim with the best the Austin wine scene has to offer.

Here’s to raising a toast to the picturesque vineyards of Austin, incredible winemaking precision, and, of course, to you, the explorers who bring stories to life with every sip. As always, drink responsibly and remember – “Life is too short to drink bad wine.”

Local Footnote: While reveling in the wine culture, let’s also pledge to respect the land and the people that make these experiences come alive. Enjoy responsibly, and do your bit in keeping these charming locales pristine by leaving no trace.

End of the tour! Your guide to the best winery tours in Austin says Goodbye!

I was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and after college, I moved to San Francisco to explore new opportunities and broaden my horizons. I fell in love with the city's vibrant culture and unique atmosphere, but eventually, I moved again, this time to Austin, Texas.

As much as I loved living in different parts of the country, having a baby boy brought me back to my hometown in Charlottesville, where I now live with my husband, our little one, and two furry friends. I enjoy going to wineries, taking my pups everywhere, and spending quality time with my family.

Austin’s winery scene is full of options to grab a glass, or a bottle, direct from the makers themselves at unique urban wineries around Austin. These winemakers hit the road and compulsively search for the best grapes around the country, bringing the fruits of their labor back to Austin to make some excellent wine.

The Austin Winery Known for its friendly and knowledgeable staff, this winery is stripping away the pretense of wine and making it more approachable to drink and enjoy. Start out with a glass of Texas High Plains Rosé with hints of fresh strawberries.

C.L. Butaud This Texas Hill Country small-batch winery has a tasting room in southwest Austin, open Friday through Sunday. Sip ultra-premium wines made from 100% Texas grapes in their indoor and outdoor tasting space. Wine for the People One of few female winemakers in Texas, Rae Wilson has been creating delightful wine for over 10 years. Did you know that Austin drinks more rosé annually than Dallas and Houston combined? Try the flagship Dandy Rosé, a dry, bright and flavorful wine, or grab a bottle of the La Valetía which features local artwork on the bottle.

Meridian Hive Meadery These innovative crafters are putting a modern touch on the ancient beverage of honey wine, also known as mead. From dry wine-like mead to a lightly sweetened ciderey beverage, you can try a wide variety of the age-old favorite. Stop by the tasting room and try the many flavorful varieties on tap or find them in local stores and at  farmers markets  around town!

Austin Wine Tours made my booking reservation easy and I'm a difficult customer. They worked with me on the wineries and Distillery the group chose to ensure that the time worked within our tour, so everyone could enjoy the tasting and lunch without feeling rushed. Austin Wine Tours also provided us with a great driver. I have to say our driver Charlie was awesome, he called before arriving, he was prompt and ensured we had everything before leaving the pickup spot. Charlie made our tour very comfortable, the ride to and from the wineries and Distillery was amazing. Charlie ensured that we were taken care of.  We will definitely be booking another tour with you folks and requesting Charlie. Thank you again, Laurie

Best wine tour ever and it's all thanks to Charlie our tour driver. Thank you Charlie!

I booked a wine tour for my sisters bachelorette and we had such a great time! The wineries were beautiful and we were able to schedule a stop at the salt lick for our private tour. Kyle was the best tour guide ever!! He was very personable, took numerous pictures for us at each winery & made sure we were having fun! I would def. recommend if you are looking at different companies to pick Austin Wine Tours (ZWay Tours) since I called 5 others and they were the most accommodating with what we wanted for a private tour and their price beat most of the other ones too! Would def. book them again & request Kyle!

Omg! We loved our experience with Austin Wine Tours! Our tour guide Kyle was amazing and made sure we had a great time. Kyle was on time and made sure we arrived safely to both our locations. Overall our experience was amazing and we will definitely book again.

We had a great time this past weekend with Austin Wine Tours. I initially booked online and didn't know what venues to go to at first but they recommended the ones that we ended up going to even though it was completely up to us where we wanted to go which I liked. We decided after to tastings to go eat at Salt Lick BBQ and the food was amazing and hit the spot in between tastings. After that we went to our final tasting at Fall Creek which was right across the street and the service there was great. It made our bachelorette party very fun and we didn't have to worry about anything other than having a good time which I liked.

Austin Wine Tours is one of the best limo tours to see the wine country we have been on to date! They were not only flexible with our dates and our last-minute reservation, they even upgraded our package with no additional charge! We were celebrating four birthdays and wanted a girls night out where no one had to drive. The limo driver was prompt and worked with us and our pick up and drop off times. When one of us left the charger in the limo he even offered to drop it off... We Are definitely looking forward to using them in the near future!

The review that I left in regards to the services booked through Austin Wine Tours was in no way false. I will stand firm by what was written. I even received a call back in May while on a business trip from the shuttle service company asking if we would pay the overtime for Hugo because AWT had not paid them yet. We even tipped Hugo an additional amount for his extra time spent with us. The response just posted (almost 4 months later) is also extremely unprofessional and misleading. We were promised a great time for a bachelorette party and were let down. Plain and simple. Those employed by AWT that we spoke with were rude as well. Secondly, I never said that AWT hosted prom events/transportation. I was told that the company that is usually utilized was completely full (by Brad) and that prom happened to be a priority and the school bus that was sent was all they could get us even though we were promised a party bus. At the end of the day we were completely dissatisfied with the services offered by AWT. Calling a client a bridezilla (who in fact actually never spoke to any AWT employee), claiming your company has gotten PTSD from our group and falsely accusing our group to be racist by saying we told "blackie to leave" is unprofessional and disrespectful amongst other things said in response to our reviews. All of those involved would be happy to discuss this event again in a professional manner since you mentioned that we were offered a full refund when that in fact was not true. We were offered maybe $350 (I could be wrong on this amount since we haven't heard/spoken to anyone from AWT for several months) in return if we removed our reviews. As a company you should take responsibility instead of blaming others for your mistakes that way you can fix the problem and do better for future patrons. Especially since there has been no money refunded at this point.

This review is so completely false and off base that we decided to finally respond after numerous attempts to reach a resolution. We will be posting our phone calls with Devin and let you be the judge. https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.bettervoice.com/media/recording/20180417-152223_a4373485-5de9-4a71-a1db-b4a4ac80fac1.wav Facts: -Initial bus showed up on time (not a school bus as stated) -Offered full refund if they wanted to cancel simply because seats faced forward like most -Customer called back wanting us to send another bus -We decided to send another bus, noting it would take at least an hour to get there -Customer then called back and said to send initial bus back and cancel 2nd bus, already on its way -Contradicting orders were given by multiple party members We feel this customer is trying to cover her tracks and blame it on us, when in fact she was the main reason for the issues and we feel sorry for the bride bc of what she caused. After performing hundreds of jobs with great service, of course the one job where we had frankly horrendous customers shows up. We paid for two buses because these ladies couldn't be clear on what they wanted, didn't charge them extra when they went 4 hours over, and they STILL left bad reviews! Customer states we sent "incorrect bus". Truth: The bus which was initially sent was of great quality, so much in fact that in the very review that we are responding to, she states "We ended up having a third party bus company drive us around, who in fact was absolutely amazing to us and even offered to stay with us for the entire day to ensure we enjoyed ourselves." We took a screenshot of her review in case she decides to now edit it, but how great for us. The entire reason they complained was because this very bus didn't have perimeter style seating so they could dance. We had done a previous job for one of the ladies in the group and sent one of our buses which did have perimeter style seating, but neither on our website or verbally do we guarantee buses with perimeter style seating. They were just intoxicated and took out their frustration, possibly with each other, on us. Customer states "We were turned away at the door at the Deep Eddy's distillery and the manager Ben told us that Austin Wine Tours knows they cannot send buses to them after 2:00PM and that we were in fact the 5th bus that day from this company they had sent and even name dropped Brad when explaining this to us." Truth: The rep, Brad, had never dealt with anyone at Deep Eddy's before, so there would have been no way they knew his name. Furthermore, she claims they were the 5th bus that day the company had sent away. Thank God for texts and recorded phone calls which we will include a link below to. For this statement to be true, that means that by the time they showed up at 210pm that four other buses were turned away in a 10 minute time frame. We didn't even have 1 bus go there! https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.bettervoice.com/media/recording/20180415-214103_d9e442e3-9e2f-4724-8fe7-54432646934d.wav On top of all of this, the very reason they were late in the first place was because they sent away this "incorrect bus" when it showed up on time, and then changed their minds & asked for it to return after we sent a second bus from far away. They really had us jumping through loops, yet still had the audacity to post this review to cover her tracks. We knew very well their policy, but the ladies took so long, gave us contradicting orders, and then showed up intoxicated after 2pm so Deep Eddy did not make an exception even though we called them at least ten times while the ladies were on their way. Please understand we were frightened by these ladies, so did everything in our power to prevent them from screaming at us again. We also had to assure the driver they would not yell at him again as he did not initially want to return. Customer states rep told them it was their fault and he was yelling. Truth: This is so far off base that we included links to the recordings below. If you cannot hear them or have difficulty listening to the recordings let us know and we will email them. At no point did we ever yell even after having multiple people yell at us. Picture multiple drunk women calling you, and one yelling at you while you have another calling on the other line. Maybe she is referring to being hung up on when the rep needed to switch over to answer a call from another lady in her group? Either way, thank God for recordings so its not just our word vs theirs. We understand this may not be an orthodox approach in this response, but when there are such false comments that have detrimental effects on our business, we have to employ all options. We are not perfect, and 99% of the time the old adage that the customer is right is absolutely true. Also please also note we do not do prom jobs, only tours. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Lm6rhO8j8TZY7fnwbFGb4iIrDDKPnCrq?usp=sharing

Literally one of the worst experiences I have ever had for a bachelorette party. This doesn't even deserve 1 star. Not only did they send us the incorrect bus but as the day went on the plan kept changing. When calling the company initially to ask where the bus was that we had paid for, the sales rep actually hung up on me. We ended up having a third party bus company drive us around, who in fact was absolutely amazing to us and even offered to stay with us for the entire day to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. Not only did he do that, but the bus driver called ahead to confirm we would be able to get into the winery because we were turned away at the door at the Deep Eddy's distillery and the manager Ben told us that Austin Wine Tours knows they cannot send buses to them after 2:00PM and that we were in fact the 5th bus that day from this company they had sent and even name dropped Brad when explaining this to us. I was appreciative of the initial efforts from Brad for damage control however, things began to just get out of hand. I called Brad to tell him that we no longer wanted their help in regards to the remaining tour and that there needed to be some sort of refund especially for the amount we paid. Brad then continually told me that this was all of our fault, he was yelling, interrupting and extremely disrespectful. His reaction to me expressing our dissatisfaction of the tour that hey dropped the ball on was extremely unprofessional. We were also told that this was prom weekend and that was their priority at the time. ANY patron that is paying for a service needs to be considered a priority, not one group is more important than the other. Hospitality is an industry that is supposed to exude the expectations of entertainment, being welcoming and TAKING CARE OF THE CLIENTELE, not telling them that it's their fault that it turned into a disaster because they couldn't deliver the services we were repeatedly told over and over that we would receive. This company did the complete opposite and couldn't admit to their faults. I will never recommend this company to anyone in the future.

Had the absolute best time on our Bachelorette party!! Hill Country was so much fun to see and the wine made it even more enjoyable. Sara was very helpful with planning the itinerary and gave us exact times so we could keep track along the way, and the vehicle was exactly as described and in excellent condition! Myron was an excellent driver. You should definitely plan with Austin Wine Tours! Amazing service!!!

Aug 28, 2018

Kelli, thank you for your feedback. We try to be very clear on what vehicle to expect and glad to hear it was in excellent condition. We will be sure to relay the kudos to Myron as well. Thanks again!

10/10 would recommend Austin Wine Tours! First off, booking and choosing our agenda was super easy and they even let me adjust the headcount when that changed. On the day of, I got a heads-up call to confirm the time and pickup location. We had a larger, rowdy group of gals on a bachelorette trip and our driver Song took SUCH good care of us! She immediately asked us what music we wanted to crank and encouraged all the "wooing" from the back of the van. She also offered to take pictures of us, scouted out the best locations for group photos and even took TONS of candid pics of us while we enjoyed the winery and distillery we went to. She helped with all of the logistics of checking in at each stop and making sure we were taken care of. She also let us make a pee stop on the way home...and overall she was just SUPER nice and was basically hyping us up the entire day, making sure the bride felt special and making sure we all had fun. By the end of the day we all felt like she was part of the crew. Thank you again Song!!

If I could give this company a negative star review, I would!!! Completely unprofessional and was hung up on!! They sent an incorrect party bus for a bachelorette party, contracted out at last minute to another company (who were amazing), sent us to Deep eddys where we were turned away!!! Brad would NOT let me speak and kept interrupting me. The professionalism of this company was simply awful. And they still have not refunded anything from this trip!!! Disgusted and I will never recommend this company to anyone. Spend the extra money and go elsewhere.

Your friend Sophia even admitted we shouldn't have talked to you and only to the one who signed and contracted out the services (see link at end). Might want to also listen to the recording from the driver of the "amazing company" here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.bettervoice.com/media/recording/20180417-152223_a4373485-5de9-4a71-a1db-b4a4ac80fac1.wav We did everything in our power, sent second bus etc. Facts: -Initial bus showed up on time -Customers yelled at driver and told "blackie" to leave -We offered full refund if they wanted to cancel (after being yelled at because the seats faced forward we were ready to be done) -Customer called back wanting us to send another bus -We decided to send another bus, noting it would take at least an hour to get there -Customer then called back and said to send initial bus back and cancel 2nd bus, already on its way -Contradicting orders were given by multiple party members We feel this customer, who caused problems with the trip the day of, is trying to cover her tracks and blame it on us, when in fact she was the main reason issues were compounded and will explain in this response. False reviews like this can greatly affect our business. It was truly a bridezilla situation with ladies who were drunk by the time we picked them up. Customer states we sent "incorrect bus". Truth: The bus which was initially sent was of great quality, so much in fact that in the very review that we are responding to she says they were amazing. Alcohol must have been flowing that day to be so contradicting. We took a screenshot of her review in case she decides to now edit it, but how great for us. The entire reason they complained was because this very bus didn't have limo style AKA perimeter style seating so they could dance. We had done a previous job for one of the ladies in the group and sent one of our buses which does have perimeter style seating, but never once on our website or verbally do we state or guarantee buses with perimeter style seating. Not only that, but our company did not have one single bus go to Deep Eddy that day, as we only used 2 luxury vans that day and not one bus. On top of all of this, the very reason they were late in the first place was because they sent away this "incorrect bus" when it showed up on time, and then changed their minds and asked for it to return after we sent a second bus from over an hour away. Booking our wine excursion was stress free the moment Sara answered the phone! Sara was very informative and laid everything out, giving us a doable timeline for the afternoon we wanted. The itinerary we received gave us a good idea of how long to spend at each venue. There were only 4 people in our group, so we were able to do a very flexible hourly option, with appointments at the wineries. Since we had less than 5 passengers, our tastings weren't included (informed that going in) however, that did not deter our experience... it was awesome! Buying a bottle of wine at each venue was very affordable when we split the cost among us. George, our driver, was professional and friendly; and the limo experience was awesome! You might want to bring snacks just in case someone gets a bit tipsy, but most wineries offer food of some kind. Thanks Austin Wine Tours, for making me look like a champ with my high maintenance friends... I'll be back!

HILL COUNTRY BBQ & WINE TOUR

Enjoy the hill country's best wine & bbq with austin detours.

Let’s head for the hills! This road trip takes you out of Austin and into our beloved Hill Country. Texas has long been famous for its amazing BBQ but many people don’t know the state is the 5th largest wine producer in the United States, so why not pair famous BBQ with fantastic wine? We start at the Salt Lick, one of the most famous BBQ pits in the Lone Star State, where you can savor fall-off-the-bone brisket, sausage, turkey and out-of-this-world sides. We’ll then wind through the hills, stopping at two of Central Texas’ best wineries so you can taste different wines made in this area. This is the quintessential Hill Country tour!

Austin's Favorite BBQ & Wine Tour

Loved Salt Lick and Driftwood Winery.

We visited Salt Lick BBQ and the Driftwood winery. I can’t say enough good things about this company.

BBQ at the The Salt Lick was also memorable. The wine tasting in the Hill country was unexpectedly good! Highly recommend this tour company when you are in town.

A very personal feel.”
