Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

41 Signs You Are a Travel Addict

A traveler standing on a dock surrounded by nature in the rugged mountains of Canada

The travel bug. Chances are if you’re on this website, you’ve got it (or will soon). If you’re always dreaming of far-flung adventures, pining for a change of scenery, or incessantly adding things to your Bucket List then I have some news for you: you are a travel addict.

And there is no cure.

Once you are infected with the travel bug, it never leaves your system. It only gets worse. You’re going to be hooked for life!

But that’s ok because you’re not alone! I have the bug – and everything I do revolves around travel. Travel is always on my mind, and I’m constantly planning my next trip. Sound familiar?

In case you’re worried you might be infected with the travel bug, here are some signs you might be a travel addict too:

You start all your stories with “When I was in…..”

You’re always asking friends to go on trips.

You’ve watched everything related to travel on Netflix.

Anthony Bourdain will always be your spirit animal. (RIP)

You’ve also seen every episode of No Reservations and Parts Unknown.

You read guidebooks for fun.

You plan trips you will never take.

Google Flights is your homepage.

You’ve signed up for every flight deal newsletter in the world.

You always ask people “Where are you from?” even when you can tell by their accent.

You wear flip-flops in the shower.

You take toilet paper everywhere you go out of habit.

Google Translate and XE Currency Converter are two of your most-used apps.

You have more than one currency in your wallet (just in case).

You keep a packed suitcase handy.

You have a travel playlist on your iPod.

You speak in airport codes, not city names.

You have more SIM cards than you can count.

You can tell where people have been by the cheesy logos and sayings on their shirts. (Same Same = Thailand, Yellow Star = Vietnam)

You have elite flyer status on multiple airlines.

You attend travel conferences multiple times a year.

You don’t have paintings on the wall — you have maps.

If you haven’t been anywhere in a few months, you get the shakes.

You can breeze through airport security with your eyes closed.

You spend two hours each day reading travel blogs and travel websites.

You subscribe to multiple travel magazines.

No matter how often you travel, your bucket list is always getting longer, not shorter.

When you think of prices, you value things in terms of how many days in your next destination it costs. “That TV is 10 days in Paris! Let’s get this one — it’s only 5 days!”

You don’t do cashback. You do points.

You have a collection of luggage tags that have been gifted by friends and family over the holiday.

You pretend you are a travel writer.

When people ask you about your hobbies, all your answers contain the word “travel.”

Some people cry when they leave home. You cry when you have to go back.

When people ask you your profession, you say vagabond.

You filled your first passport before the first year was over.

You have trips planned for next decade — just for fun.

You keep your used guidebooks in your bookcase as a badge of honor.

You have a map tattooed somewhere on your body.

You plan your next trip while on a current trip.

People you haven’t spoken to since kindergarten randomly message you on Facebook asking you for advice about their upcoming trip.

You write a travel addict post.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

About the company.

Meet Our Baltic States! We are an incoming tour operator and DMC that is run by travelers, who strive to deliver memorable experiences and moments for those who travel with us. We specialize in multiday tours, weekend breaks, thematic weekend breaks, day tours and other services that help to fulfill your wishes while staying in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Some of our tours include Scandinavia, Belarus and Poland.

Top sights & Experiences.  We are a group of well traveled souls who are very demanding for what we organize and how we host in our homeland. So, we don’t call it tours – it is experiences that we do. We are focused on the emotions, moments that you or your customers feel rather than some sights to take a picture.

Creative Tourism . We focus on adventure tourism may it be Sauna on a Baltic seaside or in a cave. Sleeping in a boat or taking a digital detox – we are here to provide some impactful journeys.

Hospitality . Good service is our core target. Our team has won the most hospitable team award from Lithuanian Tourism Board in 2017, so be sure we are very much about details. We are flexible to tailor every experience to the customers needs to help our travelers make the most of their trip.

Responsible tourism . Local communities are a part of our club! We stay in the best homesteads, meet local crafters, support traditions and work closely with local communities. Trust us, it will be of the beaten track, trus us – it will be memorable. We drink water from a tap which is super good in Lithuania.

Authenticity . Many of us are modern and connected. However we have some very authentic things left. Sauna on a seaside, comfort-loaded SPA, or some smoked fisherman’s catch and a lot more.

Welcome to our Baltic countries!

50 Signs You Might Be Addicted to Travel

a plane view is the best view for those addicted to travel

Most people like to travel. They work hard and plan their vacations. But they’re happy with their few weeks of vacation. Then there are the travel addicts who spend each and every waking moment thinking about the next place they can visit. Some that may be so addicted to travel that they create their own travel blog so they can think of travel more often. I definitely don’t know anyone like that! But if you ever need to figure out if someone has a bit of a travel addiction, there are a few (not so) subtle ways.

You know you’re addicted to travel when…

1 – You have at least three trips planned each year – one vacation is not enough

2 – When telling people about your upcoming trip, their only response is “Weren’t you just away?”

3 – On the million-to-one chance you don’t have a trip booked, you’re already planning your next one. Or two.

4 – You wake up and think of traveling

5 – You go to sleep thinking about traveling

6 – When hanging out with friends your stories all start with “When I was in…”

7 – When people compliment an item of clothing or something and you always say “Thanks, I got it in…”

8 – You can’t look at certain food without thinking about a similar item in another country you’ve been to

9 – A collection of travel magnets has taken over your fridge

10 – You can’t walk into a 7-11 without thinking about your trip to Thailand

Remember to take a reusable water bottle with you on your travels, like this one from FastTech

food is always the best part of travel

11 – You correct people’s pronunciation of food items because you had it in the country it originated from so you’re now that person (I’m looking at you Pho )

12 – Your phone gallery is full because you have so many photos from traveling

13 – You can order a beer in at least 5 languages but can’t say anything else

14 – Your credit card has some kind of travel rewards with it

15 – You have a box full of items that you got while traveling that you’ll never use but can’t get rid of “because they have so many memories”

16 – You add more to your bucket list than you check off

17 – Airport codes are forever ingrained into your memory so LHR, PEK and YYZ mean something to you

18 – You know your passport number and expiry without looking at it

19 – Someone asks where your favorite travel destination is and you get all Good Will Hunting trying to figure it out as you argue yourself in circles

20 – You’re a member of at least one travel group on Facebook ( Girls Love Travel ladies where you at?!) because you gravitate to other like-minded addicted to travel people

getting lost while traveling

21 – You have at least 3 good stories about getting lost abroad

22 – You’re more likely to take public transit to/from an airport because you travel so much you need to save all the money you can…for more travel

23 – There’s at least one foreign food no-one else has ever heard of that you love

24 – There’s at least one foreign food no-one else has ever heard of that you passionately hate

25 – People you haven’t seen for a while start every conversation with “And where have you been to recently?” knowing that a trip was never too long ago

26 – You have a favorite airport

27 – There’s at least one “dream destination” most people have that you can’t stand because it was “too touristy”

28 – You have a collection of miniature toiletries from hotels around the world from trips gone by (hopefully these will soon be a thing of the past)

29 – You have more than the entry level status for at least one travel rewards program

30 – You own a travel pillow, compression socks and packing cubes, and never leave home without any of them

trip planning for the addicted to travel

31 – If you don’t have a trip currently booked you’re so anxious that you feel like you might be suffocating

32 – Your shoes and belt are off and your laptop is out of your bag as soon as you get in line for security at the airport

33 – Watching the inevitable person with liquid in their hand baggage causes you to mutter “how hard is this?”

34 – You’re the only one not hurrying to get on the plane as soon as it starts boarding

35 – You’re the only person who doesn’t stand as soon as the plane lands because as optimistic as you are, you know row 35 won’t be getting off anytime soon

36 – You’ve ever made a gift bag for flight attendants

37 – You have a favorite restaurant/bakery in another country – Gosselin bakery in Paris for me

38 – You know what time it is in any random country because you know at least one person in that time zone

39 – There are coins of at least 3 different currency in your purse right now

40 – You don’t change money back when you return because you’re sure you’ll be back there sometime soon

saving is key for those addicted to travel

41 – The currency exchange place knows you by name

42 – You shake your head when people say they didn’t buy insurance because they “didn’t plan on having to cancel/getting sick/losing their bags”

43 – You randomly find boarding passes, museum tickets or used transit passes in your purse

44 – Your family are shocked when you show up for the holidays because they thought you were still away somewhere

45 – Each holiday season everyone gets gifts from your latest trip

46 – You know the names of at least three travel writers

47 – You can have a conversation with anyone and it always leads back to travel, and you’re never sure how it got there

48 – People always ask you advice for their own trips

49 – You’d rather save your money for travel instead of a car/house/designer clothes

50 – You love travel so much you created a travel blog so you can talk about traveling more (and give you more of a reason to go new places)

The cure for a travel addiction

If you came here hoping for a way to curb your wanderlust then you’re asking the wrong person. I’ll probably give you more places you want to visit than talk you out of a trip. Heck, I’ll probably end up joining you for fear of missing out myself. Unfortunately there is no real cure for being addicted to travel. It’s in your blood, and you’ll always be dreaming of your next trip. Might as well just give in and book a flight.

If you’ve enjoyed this post leave a comment or share using the social media buttons below. Do you think you might be addicted to travel? Which signs do you most relate to?

24 thoughts on “50 Signs You Might Be Addicted to Travel”

LOL this was a fun read and I am definitely 3/4 of this list!! Can’t wait to travel again!

I plan trips in my free time – like that is my hobby! My husband loves the Playstation, my friends like reading or watching Netflix – I LOVE sitting with a spreadsheet out, Skyscanner open, a handful of blogs at the ready and PLAN!

This extra time at home as got me planning trips for three years ahead of time! So yeah.. I maybe a tiny bit addicted 🙂

I feel so SEEN! Hahahahaha. 37 of them. Wow.

#33 every time! We once got stuck behind a family who insisted on finishing drinking their sodas that THEY HAD JUST BOUGHT! Who does that!!!

I’m guilty as charged on all the points. But I love it. Really fun post. I don’t think I would want a cure for that even if there would be some

Hahahahha this is sadly too accurate. I can tell you without much work what time it currently is in NYC, CDMX, as well as Shanghai and Hong Kong (I am from Europe). Also waaay too many of my stories start with “When I was in….”. Thank god I work in hospitality so it is not too uncommon. Love this post. Thanks for sharing.

I can totally relate to all of these 😂 #10 got me though – still drool thinking about Thailand’s toasties from 7/11 😂

This is so true, I can relate to so many things here.

I’m surprised to say that I answered “yes” to less of these then I thought I would have. So maybe I’m not as travel addicted as I thought!

#33 killed me! Fab post – definitely relatable and for sure can say I am addicted now haha!

LOVE it! I think it is safe to say I am addicted to travelling! Can’t wait for the day planes start flying, borders are opened and it is safe to travel again. Thanks for sharing such a fun piece 🙂

Such a nice topic to write about! I am sharing this with my husband. I can totally relate to this 🙂

I counted 47/50 for me!! haha I’m def addicted

I feel so called out by #12 about the phone gallery haha! I *never* delete travel photos from my phone

43 out of 50, I’m definitely addicited!!

This is hilarious and brilliant! I checked off about 95% of of these – and OMG yes the fridge magnets! And the old currency! And OBVIOUSLY 48-50. And just about all of it really. I feel seen.

Ahah it was so funny to read this list! I can relate to many of them! As a travel blogger and travel content creator, I can tell I am 100% addicted to travel 😀

I guess I am officially addicted to travel! 🤗

Haha, I am most definitely addicted to travel. I love this list. Almost at every point, I was like “yap, that’s me”… 🙂

Haha this is awesome. I’m definitely guilty!!!

Haha, I can relate to many of these! I guess I’m an official addict!

I feel like you’ve just described me haha. Definitely most of these…

Guilty as charged. Too many of these line up! 🙂 Officially addicted to travel!

So I hit 38, and only cause a few aren’t relevant. I like the belt one, that is so me. Plus the damn things are so uncomfortable on a tight plane seat.

Disused Tube Station Tours by Hidden London

Travel Addict

London’s Tube system has 157 years of history and many hidden secrets in the 250 miles of tunnels under the expansive metropolitan. Stations have opened, closed and been altered many times throughout the years; and the constant state of flux has frozen many stations in set time periods.

Have you ever wondered where they filmed Tube scenes for movies? When they have a track involved it’s usually either the closed platforms for Jubilee Line at Charing Cross Station for modern movie scenes or the closed Piccadilly Line extension at Aldwych Station for vintage movie scenes.

London Transport Museum has done an incredible job in mapping out the different types of tours, ensuring that each one has a different focus and feel. I’ve been on 5 different tours with them and each one was unique and fascinating. I can highly recommend booking a tour with them when you’re in London. You will have to book it in advance but it will be worth the effort.

The tours are not always available year round, so please double check the Hidden London website for most up to date information on available dates. The more popular ones, such as Aldwych and Charing Cross, have frequently available dates. And it’s critical to book in advance as the tours with lower availability sell out very quickly.

I’ve taken 5 of the tours available over the years and here is how I would rank them, and a summary of my experiences. London Transport Museum often is updating and adding their tours to include new experiences or locations, so these are by no means a conclusive offering from Hidden London.

I’ve ranked them in order of my appreciation for each of the tours. All the tours hold a special place in my heart and each was thoroughly enjoyable. Since I’ve been on the tours they’ve also issued other variants, such as the Film Tour, for example, so this list is by no means conclusive.

1. Aldwych Station

travel addict tours

Aldwych Station was active until the late 1990s as a single stop on a Piccadilly Line extension from Holborn. After the lift in the station broke TFL determined that it would cost more to repair it than it was worth as an operating station.

Since it’s closure it has been used as a film set for several TV shows and films, mostly period pieces that require a more vintage looking Tube station. The design is one of the traditional Leslie Green stations, with it’s gorgeous tiling and beautiful vintage motif. The history however goes back much further than it’s closure. The station was used to store and house many of the treasures from the British Museum during the Blitz.

The tour involves climbing up and down the nearly 300 stairs at the station, since the lifts are out of commission, but provides a great view into a disused tube station. It was the first station that London Transport Museum chose to open for visitors and is the longest running of their available tours.

It’s also an unusual station since it has been used to test new initiatives for the Underground – from glow tape meant to show the way out in a power cut to new insulation techniques for the tunnels.

2. Down Street Station

travel addict tours

Down Street Station was originally a stop along the Piccadilly Line in Mayfair – situated between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner. Located in Mayfair it was eventually closed in 1932 due to it’s proximity to the other two stations and it’s unique location in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

During the Second World War the station was converted to be the headquarters of British Rail; a secure and underground location from which they could organize and control the flow of goods throughout the country during war time. It was also believed to be a shelter for Winston Churchill during the war as well.

The tour involves a tour of a closed station, including the rush of Piccadilly trains moving down the blocked off tunnels. The wonderful part of this tour is being able to visualize the underground headquarters of the rail and network, with views of their housing situation, and where they would have setup during the war. Though all of that has been taken down over the years, and the walls painted a lifeless gray, it’s a unique experience to get to walk these halls.

3. Charing Cross Platforms

travel addict tours

The closed platforms at Charing Cross were once the terminus point of the Jubilee Line, before the extension expanded it all the way through to Stratford. When the Jubilee Line was expanded across the River Thames the platforms for Jubilee Line were closed.

The platforms have been used for modern based TV and films – including scenes from Skyfall, Thor 2, and Killing Eve. It provides a modern juxtaposition compared to the more vintage looking Aldwych Station.

The interesting element of this tour is not just viewing the more modern platforms and disused portion of the station, including not working escalator. But the real point of interest is the part of the tour that enters the ventilation shafts, which gave an incredible view of the behind the scenes elements of the London Underground.

4. Clapham Deep Level Shelter

travel addict tours

The deep-level shelters at Clapham are not quite disused tube stations, but fits in with the theme and nature of the tours that Hidden London have organized.

During the Second World War many Londoners used the Tube Stations in the evenings of shelter during the Blitz. They were built in response to the demand for shelter space in London, and also after one of the south London tube stations was flooded after a water main burst following a bombing. The deep level shelters provided more security from such incidents.

Though no one ended up staying in the shelter during the Second World War, shortly after the war it was used to house the first immigrants who came over via Windrush to help rebuild the country. And later was used as a hotel for Festival of Britain.

The tour is not for the faint of heart as the shelter is 11 stories underground and there is no lift. The tour is really well thought out and tells the different history of the shelter over the years. It also gives a really strong feeling for just how large the shelter is.

5. Euston Tunnels

travel addict tours

The tour of the Euston Tunnels involves visiting the disused passage ways that existed between the Tube lines at Euston Station and it features a hallway of vintage advertising and movie posters from the time when the tunnels were closed. The hallways were also done in the beautiful vintage Leslie Green design of tube stations, with the gorgeous and unmistakable green tiles.

The “lost” tunnels provide a different experience to some of the other stations which focus more on the disused station or closed platforms.

The tour visits several different areas within Euston, starting with the old entrance to the Tube Station, and snaking its way through the lost tunnels to view a variety of different elements within the station.

I did enjoy the tour but I would recommend either not partaking in this one or making it one of your first. By the time I reached Euston I had seen all of the various components that it had to offer elsewhere, and in better condition.

More Disused Tube Station Tours

The 5 disused tube stations that I’ve reviewed are the most popular and longest standing of the offerings from Hidden London. But there are a handful more locations that they offer tours to:

  • Baker Street : This tour is unique as it allows access to the city’s first underground station when steam trains connected Paddington Station in the west of London and Farringdon Station in the east of London.
  • Kingsway Tram Tunnel : This tour features a glimpse into London’s tram which has been closed for over 50 years, and much of the original tunnel remains intact.
  • Moorgate : This tour features access to a station tha was built upon over and over again, creating a maze of tunnels closed to the public, but open for Hidden London.
  • Piccadilly Circus : This tour features one of the most iconic of the London Underground stations and highlights the history of wartime London.
  • Shepherd’s Bush : This tour highlights the importance of one of the first suburban connections for the Underground in western London.

I’ve done a couple of these tours and I really enjoyed them!

' data-srcset=

Love hearing that! Any particular that you would recommend?

' data-srcset=

This is seriously awesome! I’ve been to London loads of times (I’m from Canada but have family living south of London!) but I had NO idea you could so this! Every time we come and visit I am so surprised at how much there is to do – but I really want to do this tour, especially the Clapham Deep Level Shelter (I love all this WW2 history). Thank you for sharing!

The Clapham Deep Level Shelter one is great – they’ve put a lot of effort into surfacing the history and bringing it to life. Be prepared for stairs!

' data-srcset=

Wow this is really cool! I’ve visited London a few times but didn’t know about these tours. I’ll definitely be checking them out when I visit again.

They’re really unusual and fun! You’ll want to book in advance because there are limited slots, but I’ve never had any issues getting the dates I wanted (weekends fill up fast though).

' data-srcset=

Wow, this is amazing. I live in London and didn’t even know these tours existed! Must be so cool to see the behind the scenes of how the tube works. Definitely going to keep this in mind as something to do in the future! Thanks so much for sharing this! 🙂

The Charing Cross tour was really eye opening for the “behind the scenes” element. Actually got to see down to the platform from the air vent shafts. I appreciate all the nuances of tube engineering better now!

' data-srcset=

This is SUCH a cool post, I didn’t even know that you could do something like this in London! I will absolutely need to do this when I eventually go back!

It’s been a well kept secret for several years now, but I try and book in tours for friends and family when they travel here. I think because there’s no physical location to book at, and requires pre-booking, sometimes tourists don’t naturally find it.

' data-srcset=

I LOVE things like this!! I think there’s a Royal Mail railway (Mail Rail) that you can visit too. I’ll have to check one out next time I’m in London!

There is! It’s been on my wishlist but haven’t had a chance to sort out a visit. I have heard fantastic things about it though!

' data-srcset=

This is such a cool idea. I love the London Underground and would love to take a tour like this

Thanks Emma, I can definitely recommend it. The history that they highlight is pretty incredible as well.

' data-srcset=

Wow this is so cool, i have never done this, but definitely on my list now – might have to do one per visit ! Thanks for the information

I love that plan! There’s still 1 or 2 I’ve not done so will have to make it a priority 🙂

' data-srcset=

I’ve been to London twice but never heard about these kind of tours. Absolutely love the idea! I will try them next time I go to London! Thanks for the recommendation.

The tours are definitely great; not sure if you’ve visited the London Transport Museum during your visits but it also has great displays on the history of the Tube and they’re partners in providing these tours.

' data-srcset=

This looks like a really cool tour to make. I didn’t know that these are available in London, and definitely want to take one when I visit London again. it’s mysterious, scary, and interesting!

The mystery was fantastic, and the guides really played well to his factor.

' data-srcset=

I love this post. Those are totally different attractions and I would love to see some of those. A few years ago I visited a defunct airport in Berlin and that was real interesting too.

These types of defunct tours really tell a story of history, and I appreciate that. I visited the old air field in Berlin, but not the airport, something to keep in mind for future trips!

' data-srcset=

it’s so eerie seeing the tube stations so empty, especially as they are typically rammed! It’s so interesting to learn the history of them, particularly as they play such an important role in the day to day life of London. It’s so cool that down street station was once the headquarters!

The eerie-ness was particularly strong at Charing Cross, because it was a modern looking station and very familiar feeling.

' data-srcset=

Well, this is something else! My city doesn’t have underground connections, so I would never even think of such tour! Thank you so much for sharing this unique experience!

' data-srcset=

The tours of the disused tube stations sound really fascinating. Such a vast area lying down below which was once the hub of activity must make for an intriguing experience. Aldwych and Charing Cross had my attention riveted.

It was a very unique and intriguing experience. Both of those tours were fantastic, really appreciated the perspectives presented in each one since they were so different from each other.

' data-srcset=

This is so cool! If we had known about it two years ago, we would have visited a few of these disused tube stations in London! But we’ll keep it in mind for our next trip to London then!

Definitely give it a go for the next trip – but you’ll want to book in advance!

' data-srcset=

This is a different tour I must say. Visiting disused tube stations underneath the city of London with an interesting history associated with each of them must be fascinating. Will include this in my list when I will visit London. Thanks for sharing.

My pleasure, hope you enjoy visiting! Given the lengthy history for London this is an incredible opportunity to visit these spaces.

' data-srcset=

I’ve always been fascinated by the London tube, having seen it so much across popular media! These tours sound fantastic – what a great way to get to know these stations. Especially love the Clapham Deep Level Shelter for all its history.

As your appreciation is founded in media – you might want to consider the Charing Cross or Aldwych Tours for sure, since they have featured in films and TV shows.. But Clapham Deep Level was one of the more unusual ones in the group.

' data-srcset=

I’ve been on the tube many times over the year and had no idea about these stations and tours. What an interesting idea.

I love the behind the scenes ones – as a regular tube rider I never noticed those spaces but you could see right to the platform from them, was really fascinating.

' data-srcset=

These look soooo fun! I already love London (I lived there for yeeears) but I had no idea you could go on tours to these old stations! It would be great for rainy days!!

p.s. I have a feeling you might also like the tours into the tunnels from the Brunel Museum.

I’m going to have to give those a tour, Josy, thanks for the shout out. I’m also keen to get to the Underground Passages in Exeter as well. I’ve seen St Mary’s Close in Edinburgh too! Love all these hidden spaces in the cities.

' data-srcset=

This is SUCH a unique and awesome thing to do in London! I suppose I never really thought about what happens to tube stations once they’re closed, or how they can be used for so many things including a hiding place for Winston Churchill! I love that you not only get to see a cool part of history, but sometimes it doubles as a movie scene too. Thanks for sharing!

' data-srcset=

I love Rail history and WW11 history. I had heard of these Tours but didn’t know where to get information or book. Next time I visit London I will contact London Transport Museum and enquire. I live in Australia.

' data-srcset=

I appreciate the way you’ve uncovered the rich history and secrets of these underground treasures. Thanks for sharing this unique and fascinating adventure with your readers!

It can be hard to balance the demands of eating well without spending a lot.

In this series, we try to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value - and have enlisted the help of  Sunna Van Kampen , founder of Tonic Health, who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices. We also speak to dieticians each week.

It's important to note from the outset that in this series, we don't try to find the outright healthiest option, but help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

With the weather finally getting warmer, this week we're looking at ice cream.

"With so many options out there, how do you fancy a 63% reduction in your sugar consumption and some savings for your wallet too?" says Sunna.

What's in our ice creams?

"Technically speaking, ice cream is just frozen milk and cream with a bit of added sweetness," Sunna says.

But as time has gone on, we've progressed to less and less cream and more and more sugar.

"To give you an example, Mars Bar Ice Cream is only 31% milk and cream, while the traditional Mackie's ice cream is 81% milk and cream," Sunna says.

"When you remove the cream, quite clearly you lose a lot of the creaminess and smooth texture, so manufacturers have turned to gums (like guar gum, locust bean gum, tara gum) to give the creaminess while lowering cost," he adds.

"The problem is some of these gums have demonstrated to be gut disruptive and hard to digest."

How much sugar can we eat?

The NHS recommends adults have 30g of sugar a day, with that decreasing to 24g for seven to 10-year-olds and 19g a day for four to six-year-olds.

"A cut in sugar is not just good news for our waistlines, but also for our overall health, contributing to a balanced diet without the same spikes in blood sugar levels," Sunna says.

Those spikes can cause sudden drops in energy, spates of hunger and potentially lead to type two diabetes.

How much sugar is in ice cream?

Let's look at some popular examples to compare the sugar content and the impact on your wallet...

  • Cadbury Flake 99: £4.25 for 4x125ml and 22.9g sugar per ice cream (5.5 teaspoons)
  • Magnum: £3.25 for 3x100ml - 20g of sugar per ice cream (five teaspoons)
  • Solero Exotic: £2.75 for 3x90ml - 12g of sugar per ice cream (three teaspoons)
  • Mars Ice Cream Bars: £2.75 for 4 x 49.5ml - 12g of sugar per ice cream (three teaspoons)
  • Cornetto Classic: £3.50 for 6x90ml - 10g of sugar per ice cream (2.5 teaspoons)
  • Milk Choc Ices: £1.60 for 6x70ml - 7.3g of sugar per ice cream (under two teaspoons)

"Assuming you have one ice cream a day across, hopefully, 30 days of sunny weather this summer, and you'll find yourself saving over 105 teaspoons of sugar from your diet this summer if you choose a Choc Ice over a Cadbury Flake 99," Sunna says.

That's a decent saving for your health - but what about your wallet?

"Choc Ice is firmly in the category of win-win, as it's 65% cheaper than a standard Magnum," he adds.

That's a considerable £24.30 saving over 30 ice creams.

The nutritionist's view - from Nichola Ludlam-Raine, dietitian at  nicsnutrition.com ...

"Shop-bought ice cream isn't a product that I recommend having daily, and luckily for the UK population this isn't something that is too hard to stick to, given the distinct lack of sunny, warm weather.

"I recently had a Mars ice cream and although I really enjoyed it. I needed two to feel satisfied, as they were so small - which doubled my sugar intake (to 24g).

"The good news, though, is not all the sugar quoted on the label is free or added sugar (and under 30g a day of this is acceptable within the context of a healthy balanced diet), as some sugar will be naturally occurring in the milk.

"Choosing ice creams where milk is the first ingredient is always preferable - or plant-based/fruit-based alternatives if you have a milk intolerance or allergy.

"The evidence regarding thickeners and emulsifiers on gut health is still in its infancy, and most of the studies are small and have been done on rodents, with relatively large amounts of the additives being used.

"Some emulsifiers may also confer benefits due to their prebiotic effects - but with gut health, the key is to add in more fibre, natural colour and plants."

Almost 10 million households need to read their energy meters this week to make the most of the energy price cap change on 1 July.

Missing the first week's worth of cheaper energy would cost them £30m collectively, according to Uswitch.

From 1 July to 30 September 2024, the annual energy price cap will be set at £1,568 for the average household - £122 lower than it is at present.

"Households should be adding 'read my energy meter' to their to-do-list this weekend if they want to take full advantage of lower energy prices from July," said Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at Uswitch.

MoneySavingExpert's Martin Lewis has issued a similar warning.

Without an accurate meter reading, households on standard variable tariffs without a smart meter will be charged estimated ones.

The difference between a week's worth of energy at June's rates compared to July's is £2.78 for the typical household.

Mr Gallizzi said now is also the time to check if you can get a better energy tariff before expected price hikes in October.

Industry analysts suggest energy rates will rise again by 12% to £1,761.

The UK's economy grew slightly more than expected between January and March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has just announced.

It was previously estimated that it grew by 0.6% during this three-month period.

But the ONS has revised that figure up - ever so slightly - to 0.7%.

Chances are, that won't change how most people feel about their personal finances.

The change could be a talking point in the ongoing election campaign, though.

Follow the latest on the race for Number 10 in our politics blog:

Every week we take an overview of the mortgage market with industry experts, while the guys at Moneyfactscompare  round up the best rates...

We start this week with the exclusive interview Sky News' Ian King conducted with the chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group - the UK's biggest lender.

Charlie Nunn warned homeowners not to expect a return to the ultra-low interest rates seen for most of the last 16 years.

"We've just come off a decade where mortgages have been in the 1.5-2.5% range," he told King.

"The expectations the market have is that interest rates probably won't get below 3.5%. And that means mortgages, or the new normal for mortgages, will be in that 3.5-4.5% range, not 1.5-2.5%."

Mr Nunn's comments earned applause from brokers and mortgage experts, with the industry news service Newspage speaking to a range of voices...

"I agree with Charlie Nunn: ultra-low interest rates are history. The public is adjusting to the new normal of 3.5% to 4.5% mortgage rates. Nunn's comments highlight market reality and urge borrowers to adapt now." Ranald Mitchell, from Charwin Private Clients
"If you're a first-time buyer, you may not see ultra-low interest rates in your mortgage lifetime. But that doesn't mean a return to good interest rates isn't possible. We should see rates beginning with a 3 or even a 2 in the not-too-distant future, especially for those with good deposits or equity." Ben Perks, from Orchard Financial Advisers

For now, the focus of many mortgage holders has been on when the Bank of England will start easing rates from the current 16-year high of 5.25%.

June had been touted but this month's meeting came and went without a change - and the delay means more people coming off mortgages secured in the ultra-low era are facing significant hikes.

About three million UK households are still set to witness hikes in their mortgage repayments over the next two years, the Bank has said this week.

Its Financial Policy Committee (FPC) added there were likely to be "very large increases" of more than 50% for the mortgages of around 400,000 households.

At the moment, around 35% of households with mortgages, or more than three million, are paying below 3% for a range of reasons - like existing deals which pre-dated the recent crisis - and are expected to see an increase between now and the end of 2026.

A typical household rolling off a fixed-rate mortgage before the end of 2026 is due to face a jump of around £180 a month, the committee said.

There has been some good news for borrowers this week though, with a handful of major lenders cutting rates in response to falling swap rates (these dictate how much it costs lenders to lend).

"Fixed rate mortgage reductions from prominent lenders such as Barclays and HSBC dominated coverage this week, as last week’s inflation announcement continued to prompt speculation of an imminent cut to base rate," says Caitlyn Eastell from Moneyfacts.

Turning to the best deals currently on the market, Ms Eastell says the lowest two-year fix for first time buyers with a 5% deposit comes from Halifax.

Priced at 5.63%, this deal has a £999 arrangement fee and offers a £250 Green Home cashback incentive to those purchasing eligible properties.

Moneyfacts also rounds up the best overall deals - looking beyond just the headline rate.

Ms Eastell adds: "As a first time buyer, every penny counts and you may have already exhausted your savings building up a 5% deposit, as well as covering legal fees and removal costs.

"It's important to consider the true cost of any deal you commit to, so if you are looking to save on the upfront cost of your mortgage, then a Best Buy mortgage may be a more cost-effective choice.

"This week, Hanley Economic BS takes one of the top spots of our Best Buy tables for a two-year mortgage. Priced at 5.69%, it offers a free valuation and £250 cashback incentive."

There could be good news on the horizon for borrowers, as an economist says the Bank of England is likely to cut interest rates in August.

Michael Saunders, a former member of the Monetary Police Committee (MPC), said the Bank has "clearly signalled" it wants to cut rates soon "if data are okay".

He told the Reuters Global Markets Forum that inflation and wage figures would need to align with the MPC's forecasts back in May.

"If so, I would expect the rest of the internal [members of the MPC] to move as a bloc to vote for a cut," he said, saying that markets had been given enough warning.

The BoE  held interest rates  at 5.25% for the seventh time in a row last week despite inflation falling to its target of 2%.

Mr Saunders predicted that the Bank would slash rates seven times in increments of 25 points by the end of next year, bringing the headline rate "close" to what he calls a neutral rate of 3.5%.

"I expect two to three cuts this year, the rest next year - again, depends a bit on the monthly data," he said.

The government has accredited three new forms of ID for purchasing restricted goods and services.

Lloyds Bank Smart ID, Post Office EasyID and Yoti ID can now be used to watch age-restricted films in cinemas, enter gambling premises, or pay for tattoos and tanning salons.

They cannot be used to buy alcoholic drinks in pubs and shops, but are recognised when buying alcohol online, along with tobacco, vapes, lottery tickets and fireworks.

"More UK businesses can now accept our Digital IDs to reduce the risk of fake IDs, increase compliance and improve the customer experience," said Robin Tombs, CEO of Yoti.

He said more than four million people have already downloaded a Digital ID app.

"This is a strong sign that people are ready to embrace reusable Digital IDs and want a more secure, private and convenient way to prove who they are."

Each of the Digital ID apps includes the approved PASS hologram.

Most of us know the feeling of rushing back to your car when you realise your ticket is about to run out.

The good news is, new rules mean you won't have to race back quite as breathlessly in future.

Drivers are to get a 10-minute grace period when their time runs out at private car parks.

The changes are coming in after industry bodies the British Parking Association (BPA) and the International Parking Community (IPC) published a new code of conduct.

However, the AA said it still leaves room for drivers to be ripped off because it misses out "desperately needed" measures such as a cap on charges.

The electric carmaker Tesla is recalling more than 11,000 of its new Cybertruck vehicles after safety regulators found a potentially dangerous fault with its giant windscreen wiper.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also said a trim in the boot may be improperly attached.

"Excessive electrical current can cause the front windshield wiper motor controller to fail," the safety administration said in a recall acknowledgement letter.

Tesla said it would replace the wiper motor at no cost to owners.

It comes after nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks were recalled in April to fix an accelerator pedal pad that could come loose.

Mass production of the vehicle, which starts at a price of $79,990 (£63,130), is expected to start next year.

It's not yet known how many trucks have gone to consumers, but the Blade Runner-inspired car has been plagued by problems.

Is your area crying out for a new supermarket to broaden your options and push prices down with a bit of competition?

Last month, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket - Aldi - asked shoppers to get in touch with their views on where it should open new stores.

The discount chain says it received thousands of replies, which it has used to hone its search for new store sites.

At the moment, Aldi has more than 1,020 stores. It says it wants more than 1,500 stores across the UK in the long run.

The 27 areas of priority to Aldi are:

  • Woodford, London
  • Surbiton, London

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: "We want to make high quality food accessible to all, but we can’t do that while there are still some towns and areas that either don’t have an Aldi or have capacity for additional stores.

"We recognise there is huge demand in certain regions for more stores, which is why we decided to get the public’s input on our latest list of priority locations."

Which?, the consumer website and magazine, has ranked Aldi as the cheapest supermarket in the UK consistently this year.

Using a typical list of popular items, Which? ranked Aldi as the cheapest place to shop from January to May - with rivals Lidl coming in second.

However, for a longer list of items and a bigger shop, Asda and Morrisons have typically been the top two for Which? this year.

Customers of both Tesco and OVO Energy are entitled to 2,500 free Clubcard points, the supermarket has announced.

The points can be redeemed as a £25 voucher or at double their value with Clubcard reward partners.

Customers can unlock the points by linking their accounts with both companies.

"The cost of living remains a key challenge for households and our partnership with Tesco is one of the many ways in which we are giving back to our customers with rewards that they can spend how they choose," said Mat Moakes, chief commercial officer at OVO.

New customers can link their Tesco Clubcard account when they sign up as an OVO customer, while existing OVO customers can log into their account, go to their profile, click "our partners", and select the Tesco Clubcard logo.

Salinas launches ‘Life After Measure 110’ tour to curb Oregon’s addiction crisis

P ORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – Rep. Andrea Salinas is launching a district-wide “Life After Measure 110” listening tour on Thursday — aiming to get feedback on ways officials can address the addiction crisis in Oregon after lawmakers rolled back the voter-approved drug decriminalization measure in April.

Rep. Salinas (OR-06) is looking to hear from both community members and law enforcement for ideas on how federal officials can forge relationships with local leaders to address the crisis.

The tour comes as law enforcement and behavioral health resources are “stretched thin,” according to Salinas.

The first-term representative, who is also up for re-election, is kicking off her tour with a 4:15 p.m. meeting Thursday at the Clackamas County offices in Oregon City. She will be joined by Clackamas County Commissioner Ben West, District Attorney John Wentworth, Sheriff Angela Brandenburg and other local leaders.

Over the summer, Salinas plans to hold meetings in other counties across her district, which includes Yamhill and Polk counties, and parts of Marion, Washington, and Clackamas counties.

“The fentanyl crisis has gripped communities across Oregon and put a huge burden on law enforcement and behavioral health providers who were already stretched thin. Now that Measure 110 has been partially repealed, we can begin to enact pragmatic, evidence-based policies that will address the problem at hand,” Salinas said in a press release announcing the tour.

“I have been working to stop the flow of fentanyl into our communities and provide law enforcement with the tools they need to keep us safe, while also expanding access to treatment and recovery services,” Salinas said. “With this listening tour, I look forward to gaining important insights from our police, local governments, and members of the recovery community about how we can move forward in a post-Measure 110 world and put an end to the addiction crisis once and for all.”

Parts of drug decriminalization Measure 110 were rolled back under House Bill 4002 , which Gov. Tina Kotek signed in April . Under the law, possession of small amounts of street drugs will be an unclassified misdemeanor starting Sept. 1, 2024.

HB 4002 will also give people the choice between being charged and treatment when they are caught carrying drugs like fentanyl and meth. Treatment includes completing a behavioral health screening and participating in a “deflection program” in order to sidestep fines.

“Who could ask for anything more?” is a famous line from “I Got Rhythm,” a classic tune by George and Ira Gershwin that’s included in the latest show at the Ogunquit Playhouse. It’s not a bad question to ask.

Theater review

WHAT: “Crazy For You”

WHERE: Ogunquit Playhouse, 10 Main St., Ogunquit

REVIEWED: June 16 (matinee); continues through July 13

TICKETS: starting at $40.

You’ve got two solid stars up front, dozens of attractive singers and dancers behind them, and a wealth of both clever and romantic Gershwin songs. And, as if that weren’t enough, the inimitable Sally Struthers comes onstage to fill two comedic roles that supply some of the best laughs in the show.

Chalk it up to a production still coming together, but “Crazy For You” showed a few seams in terms of pacing in its first performance after opening night. But the impeccably performed vintage music and the let’s-put-on-a-show spirit of the book by Ken Ludwig carried the 2½-hour show through for an entertaining afternoon at the venerable summer theater on the southern coast of Maine.

The dynamic Max Clayton sang and danced like a veteran performer who knows where the audience-pleasing theatrical goodies are hidden. His banker character Bobby soon became a faux showbiz master as he falls for a girl and decides to revive her father’s theater in Nevada rather than foreclose on the property.

Clayton’s tap talents are many and were all smoothly executed with whirling flourishes that truly dazzled. His voice sold such long-time Gershwin favorites as “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” the latter accompanied by an impressive chorus of lovely, talented female singer/dancers.

Taylor Aronson plays Bobby’s love interest Polly, adding her own very natural-sounding delivery to such classics as “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “But Not For Me.” Aronson also held her own in romantic song and dance duets with Clayton on such tunes as “Shall We Dance” and “Embraceable You.” Director Angelique Ilo’s take on the show’s original dance moves, choreographed by Susan Stroman, fit the pair well in both upfront showy and more elegantly flowing moments. The 76-year-old Struthers again proved her brilliant comedic timing in scenes with Clayton and Jim Borstelmann, the latter as a companionable British twit. Her double takes and little exclamations were hilarious as were some timeless bits of physical comedy performed by others throughout the show.

Angie Schworer and Peter Kendall got hot and heavy on “Naughty Baby” while a Cowboy Trio and a group of layabout ex-miners spiced up several pieces. Alexandria Van Paris, Delaney Bailey, Jack Doyle and Tony Roach also stood out in secondary roles. All were backed by a jauntily swinging offstage band led by Ken Clifton while some occasional onstage percussion from the players, tapping feet and more, served to bring things forward.

The sets by Adam Koch and costumes by William Ivey Long mix old-style Broadway flash and rustic cowboy folksiness, placing the audience in a world closer to an earlier, 1930s incarnation (The Gershwin brothers’ “Girl Crazy”) on which this award-winning 1992 show was based.
