Song You Need: Tim Bernardes and Rodrigo Amarante’s quiet kinship
The two brazilian singer-songwriters came together for an acoustic, duet version of bernardes’ 2022 cut “leve.”.
The FADER’s “Songs You Need” are the tracks we can’t stop playing. Check back every day for new music and follow along on our Spotify playlist .
11 months after its release, São Paulo singer-songwriter Tim Bernardes ’ 2022 sophomore album Mil Coisas Invisíveis still rewards repeated listening. Full of deceptively simple, glistening arrangements and glowing with Bernardes’ crystalline vocal style, it’s a rare document of contented quietude that shines through all the loudness of last year.
Read Next: Song You Need: This Brazilian ballad encapsulates birth, life, and death in two minutes
Today (May 2), as he prepares to kick off a U.S. and European tour later this week at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge, Bernardes has shared a new version of the standout late-album cut “Leve”: an acoustic duet featuring auxiliary voice and guitar harmonies from the Rio de Janeiro-born, Los Angeles-based artist Rodrigo Amarante .
Bernardes’ reserved persona conveys a wisdom well beyond his 31 years, and he’s used this trait to his advantage, connecting and collaborating with legends like the late, great Gal Costa in his early career. On the new “Leve,” his bond with Amarante — an artist 15 years his senior and further down the road of a successful life in music — feels organic and instantaneous, with the older performer settling into the song as if he’d been born to play it.
“I love Rodrigo’s music for a long time!,” Bernardes tells The FADER. “One time he invited me to open a stadium show of his band in Maracanã back in Brazil, which was a crazy experience. This afternoon we spent together hanging, playing and shooting these sessions in my house in Brazil late last year was such a natural and pleasant thing. Everything was very light and easy, he’s a really light and easy guy to be around. it was really fun!”
These lighthearted yet fruitful sessions are captured in a music video for the new “Leve,” directed by Andrei Moyssiadis and premiering with The FADER. Watch it above and check out Tim Bernardes’ spring and summer 2023 touring schedule below.

For almost 100 years, many of the biggest names in entertainment have been featured on the historic stages in front of you. Each show takes the skills and talent of our staff and crew to happen, but we simply cannot forget the very special members of our Appell Center family, without whom none of this would have been possible…
Our Appell Center volunteers and ushers—and there have been hundreds of them over the years—have made this place work for decades.
You meet them first when you first approach the theatre and then as you walk in our doors. Their warmth and friendliness, professionalism and courtesy, inform everyone’s first impression of the Appell Center experience, especially our newer guests.
We often hear from patrons about their experiences while visiting for a live show, learning workshop or film screening, detailing how wonderful our ushers are... how kind and helpful in whatever situation they find themselves in. Often times, this is followed up with a question of how others can join our Volunteer corps!
Looking for something fun, rewarding and community-building? We are always looking for new volunteers to serve as ushers, lobby greeters, bartenders, and more!
For more information on becoming a volunteer, please click HERE .
Look around. Here you are, seated in this beautiful, historic theatre about to enjoy a professional, live show right here in York’s downtown! What could be more exciting? This would not be possible without the support of our members.
We are humbled by the generosity of individuals across the county who make it all happen, Appell Center membership support allows us to make a significant impact in York. Members are the reason we have been able to continue entertaining the community for nearly 100 years and maintain these two historic theatres. Their support has allowed us to provide free uplifting experiences to our neighbors for whom the price of a ticket is a barrier and provide free educational programming for a generation of children in school districts throughout York County.
Members have helped us stay the course. Because of them, we remain focused on our mission and are able to throw our doors open for another season full of inspiring entertainment for you!
Our members are passionate about the performing arts. Aren’t you? Make a lasting impact right now by becoming a member of the Appell Center for the Performing Arts .
For information on the levels and benefits of membership, visit appellcenter.org or contact Kimberly Soderberg, Development Manager, at 717-825-2236 or [email protected]
TAP THE AD TO MAKE A DONATION
In August 2022, the Appell Center wrapped up its Centennial Capital Campaign, raising over $7,500,000 to support vital infrastructure improvements and establish a Facility Endowment Fund for much needed improvements to our facility, which will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2025. The summer of 2023 saw the completion of many of these improvements.
Today we are proud to welcome you through our new ADA compliant doors and into the Strand Theatre lobby where we have new and improved concessions areas that will allow for more efficient service during performances. In addition, we have replaced the HVAC system throughout the facility roof-top units, interior air management devices and system controls, which improves the efficiency and comfort of the building, reduces energy costs and provides cleaner and healthier air.
We would like to recognize the many loyal and generous community members, foundations and businesses that helped us reach our goal and invested in the future of the performing arts in York County. They deserve a standing ovation!

Community Engagement
In July 2022 the Appell Center began a collaboration with Creative Generation , a group committed to pioneering projects in the arts and cultural, education and social change fields to support those organizations driving systemic change in their communities. This work produced an actionable plan elevating knowledge within our community to help inform a set of tools to create a societal hub for arts and cultural education in York County, PA. Listening sessions with key partners and their constituents were conducted, and information gathered from those sessions has helped inform the next steps of our strategic plan in this area.
At the completion of the active phase of this collaboration, the following statement was crafted and made public on our website:
The Appell Center for the Performing Arts seeks to be a cultural hub for the community in York.
We play a vital role in the local ecosystem, collaborating with educational, civic and other cultural organizations, informal networks, and individual artists to create experiences as outlets for healthy, creative expression.
Together, we believe in connecting the arts with education, personal wellbeing and family life.
We seek to build meaningful pathways in arts, cultural and creative learning for the York community through consistent, reliable opportunities which provide
- engagement with a diversity of artistic and cultural forms;
- multi-generational creative participation; and
- transformative experiences for creative youth.
We strive to be a relationship-builder, convener and host.
PARTNER WITH THE APPELL CENTER
There are many ways to join us in partnership, but here are some common starting points:
- Attend a free or low-cost workshop and event. We have workshops and classes where you can pick a price that feels right for you and your family.
- Host an event or program at the Appell Center. Our Community Support Fund helps support local non-profits and mission-aligned projects with reduced rental fees.
- Bring a group to one of our performances. The Community ConnecTix program offers complimentary tickets to local nonprofit groups every season.
- Invite us to support an event or program. Our team can host tables at your events to promote performing arts opportunities in the community.

Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge are in their lover era…and we’re living for it
By Azrin Tan
2 September 2024
Edward and Bella, is that you? Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge give major 'Twilight' energy as they hard launch their relationship in Venice
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder . Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe. Alexa Chung and Alex Turner. Some celebrity couples, you just don’t come back from. More so, when the lore to their love is one that fuels our endless nostalgia for a time that once was. Each duo seemed to be a match made in heaven; every stolen pap or tabloid piece of news obsessively discussed and immortalised in one way or another. Like that time-eternal capture of Depp and Ryder locking eyes at the Golden Globes in 1991. Or the famous love letter Turner wrote to Chung, that forever incited a Tumblr fever of when Alex met Alexa . With equal disregard to how they may all have ended, a new celebrity couple to obsess over might just be what we’ve been missing in recent years. But amid the frenzy of the 81st Venice Film Festival , a little sliver of hope prevails. For it seems a new It-couple has arrived in our midst: Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge .
The first inklings of their relationship began in the later months of 2023, when Partridge and Rodrigo were first seen in London together. Since then, the Enola Holmes actor has been spotted in the crowd at the pop star’s end-year performances and Guts tour concerts, the pair have been on multiple date nights across London and Los Angeles, and of course, there’s that intimate petrol station pap that could make any woman blush. Yet none of it was ever confirmed publicly, and the couple has been relatively under-the-radar, in their own sort of way.

But that’s all changed in Venice . As if to say they’re ready to go public now, the young couple has hard launched their relationship by stepping out hand in hand for the festival premiere of Apple TV+’s Disclaimer , which Partridge stars in. And boy…did they look good doing it. Serving major Twilight energy, the now-viral video of them making their way to the Lido di Venezia’s red carpet is no doubt our latest micro obsession, and the cinematic parallels to that one Edward and Bella scene is undeniable. Perhaps it’s Partridge’s likeness to Edward, their suave entry in sunglasses or the sea of star-struck onlookers encircling the love birds, cameras in tow.
Of course, Rodrigo’s palpable happiness with Partridge—and vice versa—seems to have been indefatigable now that they can scream about their relationship to the world. From the film screening to the private filmmaker’s dinner for Disclaimer , there have been endless captures of the couple happily taking videos and snaps of each other during the past weekend in Venice.
To top it all off? The English actor went Instagram official and posted a loving image of himself staring adoringly at his now-public girlfriend. And for what it’s worth, we’re absolutely living for Rodrigo’s lover era. We don’t want to make any assumptions but so far, everything seems to be painting a pretty portrait of a bubbly-sweet romance, with Partridge looking like an absolute green flag for the pop singer who’s known for her breakup anthems. So it certainly seems like a lover album is definitely in the cards…but for now? Alexa, play Supermassive Black Hole .
