5 Best Peacock Bass Fishing Spots in Florida

Sharing is caring!

Florida offers a unique opportunity to catch a game fish species found nowhere else in the continental United States: peacock bass.

For many anglers, catching this novel species is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But for those who call the southern tip of Florida home, it’s just another day on the water.

Known for their vivid coloration and vicious strikes, peacock bass have become some of Florida’s most prized game fish. Most anglers would agree that they out-fight largemouth bass pound for pound.

Peacock bass are not native to Florida. However, officials brought this species here on purpose, unlike many invasive species that have found their way into the state’s waters. Now they’ve flourished in South Florida for decades.

Table of Contents

What Are Peacock Bass?

Peacock bass are a family of fish native to the Amazon River and its tributaries in South America. The species that anglers catch in Florida are called butterfly peacock bass, and they commonly measure 16 to 20 inches and weigh 3 to 6 pounds.

These brightly colored predators were introduced into South Florida waters in 1984 to help combat invasive species like cichlids, oscars, and tilapia.

The inability of peacock bass to survive in cold conditions—temperatures below 60 degrees can be fatal to them—limits their ability to spread and become invasive themselves.

But they thrive in Southern Florida’s lakes, ponds, and especially in the urban canal system throughout Broward and Dade counties near Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Are There Peacock Bass in Orlando?

Anglers visiting the Orlando area to go to Disney World or for other reasons are often hopeful that they can catch peacock bass while in the city. But because peacock bass are tropical fish that require consistently warm conditions, they cannot survive in this part of the state.

As a result, there are no peacock bass in Northern Florida areas like Jacksonville or Tallahassee. Nor will you find peacock bass fishing opportunities near Central or Southwest Florida locations like Orlando or Tampa Bay.

The northernmost place to reliably catch peacock bass in Florida is Palm Beach County, about 2.5 hours southeast of Orlando. If you draw a line across South Florida, the Naples area on the western side also has some peacock bass available, as you’ll read below.

The most popular freshwater bass fishing in those areas is for largemouth bass, which you can catch near Orlando , in the Jacksonville area , and just about everywhere across Florida .

Can You Keep Peacock Bass?

Yes, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) allows anglers to keep two peacock bass per day. Only one of those can be 17 inches or longer.

Can You Eat Peacock Bass?

Yes, peacock bass have mild flavor that some anglers rate highly.

However, as with largemouth bass and other primarily sport species, many anglers prefer to release all peacock bass to help maintain this exciting fishery and also allow the species to continue to manage less-desirable invasive fish in South Florida.

How to Catch Peacock Bass

Peacock bass are aggressive predators, and they often strike lures with a reckless abandon that surprises anglers more accustomed to catching largemouth bass in pressured waters. Many lures that work for largemouths will also work for peacock bass.

That being said, you can leave your plastic worms at home. Peacock bass almost exclusively eat smaller fish, and the best bait of all is a live shiner or shad. They also frequently strike jerkbaits, crankbaits, topwater poppers, and “walk the dog” lures.

Most anglers catch peacock bass using medium-light spinning tackle and 8-pound line.

Fly fishing can be a lot of fun too, and peacock bass will strike minnow-imitating streamers and popper flies.

Focus on edges.

Peacock bass often use structures like bridges, culverts, rocks, ledges, and drop-offs as ambush points.

In canals, they commonly suspend along the near-vertical canal edges or hide in shady spots waiting to grab passing baitfish.

The best time of year to catch peacock bass in Florida is summer. These are warm-weather fish, and they are most active between April and September.

Peacock bass rarely bite at night, but the morning and evening hours are great times to fish for them.

Where to Catch Peacock Bass

The range of Peacock Bass in Florida is quite restricted, but within the few counties at the southern tip of the state, anglers can catch these fish in a wide range of waterways.

If you’re out to catch peacock bass in South Florida, these are the best places to do so.

Broward & Miami-Dade County Canals

Built during the early 20th century for flood control, drainage, and water storage, the extensive urban canal system throughout Broward & Miami-Dade counties includes over 300 miles of waterways.

Peacock bass thrive in these channels, more so than any other place in Florida.

The canals are a bit like a labyrinth, including a maze of visible, above-ground canals and underground culverts that connect them.

The fishing is often fantastic—largemouth bass and other species are also common—but the canals can be confusing, to say the least.

Fortunately, the canal system is widely accessible from bridges, roads, and paths throughout both counties, and there are numerous places to wet a line. The canals pass through residential neighborhoods, between shopping centers, and below busy thoroughfares.

The FWC offers a very helpful  Metropolitan Southeast Florida Canals  information page, which includes individual maps and guides to many of the best canals.

One of the most productive canals for peacock bass fishing is the Black Creek Canal in southeastern Miami-Dade County. The Black Creek Canal has 9.3 miles of navigable water, with a canoe launch on SW 97th Avenue.

The Snapper Creek Canal is another excellent option, stretching 12.3 miles and connecting with several boat-accessible lateral canals and a 7-acre lake.

You’ll find a paved boat ramp on SW 97th Avenue and excellent bank fishing along  Red Road Linear Park .

The canals generally have clear water, making sight fishing for peacock bass a fun option, especially for fly fishing. In addition, there’s usually a great topwater bite in the early morning and evening.

Packs of peacock bass often cruise shallow water or gather around distinct structures like bridges and drop-offs. They usually respond to bold-colored lures fished aggressively.

Miami Airport Lakes

Located immediately south of the Miami International Airport, the chain of artificial lakes known as the Miami Airport Lakes offer some of the best peacock bass fishing in Florida.

Anglers catch loads of 2- and 3-pound peacock bass here. Some are much bigger. A former state record weighing over 9 pounds came from this chain of lakes in the early 90s, and trophy-sized peacock bass are still a possibility.

The five lakes that make up this chain from east to west are Blue Lagoon Lake, Red-Shouldered Hawk Lake, Red-tailed Hawk Lake, Lake Joanne, and Lake Mahar.

Blue Lagoon Lake is the largest and most easily accessible of the chain.

Antonio Maceo Park  provides a boat ramp on Blue Lagoon Lake (it’s the only ramp on the Airport Lakes) which is the primary access point. This lake is linked directly to Lake Mahar via the Tamiami Canal.

The waters of the Miami Airport Lakes are deep and clear, with great fishing structures for peacock bass. Try casting around docks, piers, rip-rap, and bulkheads along the shoreline.

There are also ample opportunities to fish the Miami Airport Lakes from shore, though most access isn’t official.

Businesses and apartment complexes occupy much of the shoreline, but numerous boardwalks, sidewalks, and parking lots provide access.

Markham Park

A 669-acre public park in Fort Lauderdale,  Markham Park  provides some excellent opportunities to target both peacock bass and largemouth bass. Markham Park is located north of Alligator Alley at the western end of Fort Lauderdale, right at the edge of the Everglades.

Markham Park offers a few fishing options, including lake and canal fishing. The network of small lakes inside the park is great for paddling and has abundant bank access for anglers.

The western and southern boundaries of the park are right along the North New River Canal, which offers the best peacock bass fishing in the park. Walking trails along the bank provide great access, and areas throughout the canal can hold fish.

Two concrete boat ramps are located on the canal in Markham Park, with ample parking for vehicles and trailers. Camping is available in the park as well.

Anglers who launch in Markham Park can access many miles of navigable canals eastward into Fort Lauderdale and northward along the edge of the Everglades.

Cast minnow imitations under bridges and past culvert openings to tempt peacock bass.

Editor’s Note: Be sure to read our complete guide to fishing in the Everglades , covering peacock bass and much more.

Lake Osborne & Lake Ida

Two suburban lakes connected by a canal in Palm Beach County, Lake Osborne and Lake Ida are the northernmost lakes where you can reliably catch peacock bass.

Both lakes offer ample bank fishing access as well as boat launch facilities.

In addition to peacock bass, Lakes Osborne and Ida are home to native game fish like largemouth bass, bluegill, and redear sunfish, as well as exotics like clown knifefish and Mayan cichlid.

Lake Osborne is the larger of the two lakes at about 390 acres and is very easy to fish thanks to abundant parkland around its shoreline.

John Prince Park  offers boat launch facilities, fishing piers, and walking paths along Osborne’s lakeshore.

The habitat in Lake Osborne includes a lot of healthy vegetation like willows, cattails, spikerush, and hydrilla, which provides cover for peacock bass and other species.

Live gold shiners are the preferred bait for both peacock and largemouth bass.

The northern end of Lake Osborne has lots of access from public parks, while the southern end is more developed. Casting around boat docks can be productive.

Lake Ida, located roughly 10 miles south near I-95, offers some great fishing opportunities too.

At 147 acres, this smaller lake has ample bank and boat access through  Lake Ida Park West . The lake and its adjoining canals are perfect for kayak anglers.

Golden Gate Canals

Offering the best chances to catch peacock bass on the western side of Florida, the Golden Gate Canals are a network of freshwater channels that meander through the Golden Gate neighborhood in Naples.

Peacock bass thrive here alongside native game fish such as largemouth bass and black crappie. The canals are deep, clear, and warm enough to support a self-sustaining peacock bass population.

The best fishing tactics are similar to those proven effective in Miami’s canals. Peacocks commonly congregate around bridges and other obstructions and are also known to suspend along the canals’ steep edges.

Fly fishing with poppers and streamers is a popular way to target peacock bass in the Golden Gate Canals.

It’s always a good idea to have live bait as a backup. A live shiner under a float will draw strikes when peacocks refuse all other offerings.

Golden Gate Community Park  provides the primary bank and boat access to the canals.

The Golden Gate Canals twist and turn through a primarily residential neighborhood, so there are few other places to fish the canals aside from informal access at bridge crossings.

Dead ends at the back of some of the smaller side canals are some of the best spots.

There’s great fishing here during March and April when the peacock bass are spawning, and the fish remain active throughout the summer.

Justin is top-notch in my book! A true sportsman and an outstanding fly fishing guide. Love his approach and unique perspective. Book him!  Joe Mahler   Fly casting instructor    Fort Myers,  Florida Extremely knowledgeable and one of the hardest working Guides I know, and your chance of catching is better than great! Highly recommend him and you won't be disappointed! Alberto Knie ( Crazy Alberto) Captain Justin is a great instructor, great guide, and a general friendly person. He's always put me on fish, even back when he was guiding in the Great Lakes. I would recommend going out on trip with Justin if you will be in the South Florida area. Fraser Semple Chicago, IL I have been on many charters over the years so I know how to distinguish the good from the bad. I judge my success, and my guide on two main factors; Does the guide knows his home waters, and can he be a good coach/teacher to me? Captain Justin exceeded my expectations in both areas. Erik Cohen Wrightstown, Pennsylvania I joined my wife on her work trip to Florida for a handful of days. My goal for the trip was to learn how/where to fly fish for Peas, and any other Urban Jungle species. A ton of online research was done in advance, but I only had a lil bit of success while on my own. I also realized there's just way too much water to cover to find a decent spot. Given my frustration, I booked Justin on my last day in town. Justin immediately put me on fish, and the "bite " didn't let up in the heavy rain that came later. Bottom line - Justin will put on on fish ( a lot of them). He's also a personable guide and it's clear that he has a genuine drive to make sure you have a first class experience. If considering a guide, do so early in your trip. Justin kills it! Frederick McElman Hernon, Virginia Justin is such a pro! Amazing fisherman, amazing guide. Has all the spots for multiple species. Not only does he really CARE that you catch fish, but he is such a fun guy to spend the day with. 5 stars! Will fish with him every time I'm in the area. Hands down! Patrick Joyce Milwaukee, Wisconsin Justin was fantastic!!! He went above and beyond what I expected and was incredible with my son. He knows the water and how to find the fish. Very attentive and will definitely be back in the near future. We had a blast!!! Michael Coutu Orlando,  Florida

As an ex fishing guide myself let me just tell you that some have it and some don't! If you're in the Miami area and want to do some conventional or fly fishing Justin (Cast A Line Fly Charters) is the one to call. I had a great afternoon with him a few weeks back. Can't wait to do it again and I will be sending my buds his way. Fish on Justin Nguyen!

Michael Munoz

We were on a family trip to Miami for spring break. Our fishing plans were jinxed, leaving us looking for a new outing on very short notice. I called the local fly shop (The Fly Shop of Miami), and thankfully Patrick Callea answered and was incredibly helpful in hooking us up with his friend Captain Justin and Cast A Line Fly Charters. A couple of days later and my son and I were in the Everglades catching peacock bass and several other species, catching so many fish I lost count. Spring break was saved after all. Captain Justin is an awesome guide. This is a great experience for any fly angler. I would gladly go again tomorrow if I could.

Captain Justin did an amazing job. Made the day fun and exciting. On top of that he made some unbelievable food for lunch.  Highly recommend his service.  His equipment was top notch and perfect for this type of trip. He worked it hard and kept us on the fish.  5  Stars.

Perrysburg, Ohio

We were in Key West and the wind was blowing so hard we could not get out on the water. We decided to try for one of the legendary Miami Peacock Bass. The local fly shop recommended Justin at Cast a Line Fly Charters and we are very glad he did. It was obvious that Justin knows this fishery as he took us to a public area and we caught dozens of Peacock Bass as well as a slew of other fish all on the fly. I used my 5 wt Orvis Helios 3F for most of the day but also caught a few on a sweet little 3 wt set up he had. I will definitely be back sooner rather than later and the absolute giant Peacock Bass I missed will haunt my dreams for a long time. If it was possible to give 6 stars on here I would. Justin is fantastic.

Btw make sure you eat a light breakfast as you are going to want to eat every morsel of his shore lunch .

Geoff Emery

Blue Ridge, Virginia

Spent a day in Everglades with Justin and absolutely slayed the fishing. Between my buddy and I, we got on 200 fish (not joking, seriously!!), including the peacocks we were gunning for. Justin got us on fish all day long and knew the exact flies to rig up for us. We were catching them on 3 weights, 5 weights, 7 weights, poppers, clousers, and more!

What may have been better than the constant hooking up on fish, was Captain Justin. His energy and positive attitude is contagious and if we had caught 0 fish, it still would have been an awesome time because of Justin. And, if you opt in on a possible lunch option, it will blow your sox off (best meal I had in Miami!).

All in all, this is an awesome outfit and an amazing guide. We'll be back!!

It’s worth the trip to south Florida to fish with Capt, Justin. He’s a heckuva a captain and a great guide.  He worked hard to put us on fish and did a great job of helping teach us what we needed to do to help maximize the opportunities we got. We absolutely crushed the peacocks with him!!  Do yourself a favor and book at least a 3/4 day so you can experience his shore lunch. He’s a great chef to. We’ll definitely fish with him again!

Jason Yarbrough

I've had the opportunity to fish twice with Captain Justin.  He is exactly what you are looking for in guide.  He knows his stuff, he works hard, and he wants you to catch fish!  He's also a rockstar chef, and that's a nice side benefit.  It's a great fishery down there in South Florida, and I'd recommend that anyone take advantage of it.

I am not new to guided fishing.  I have been going on guided trips for years.  Justin is fabulous guide.  He has tremendous knowledge of the water he fishes and if you ask him, he has some great tweaks for your cast.  There was also the surprise of a home cooked lunch that was delicious.  The boat had a fun, Zen vibe and we caught great fish.  I booked again already.  Full stars from me!

Rick Feingold

Chicago, Illinois

Justin led me to catch my biggest bass ever. He made my dad and me a fantastic lunch of shrimp and pork belly. Lastly, he gave me an outstanding fly fishing lesson and helped me catch peacock bass and more on a fly for the first time.

He was constantly working to get my dad and me to the fish and giving us tips and guidance when our casts had room for improvement. I should also mention that Justin’s boat is beautiful and in pristine condition!

It was a great day that I’ll always remember and I can’t recommend him enough!

Bryant Chase

Los Angeles, California

Justin was amazing and did not disappoint! He attended to my 13 year old son like his own.  He was very patient and was a wonderful teacher.  It was a joy spending the day with Justin, he is a top notch professional.

Today was our first trip catching Peacock Bass and we had an absolute ball doing it. You know it’s a good day when you lose count of how many you’ve caught !If you’re looking for a guide in this area, do yourself a favor and let him lead the way. Can’t wait to come back and do it again!

Randal Minton

Came to south Florida to visit my brother and do a little fishing in the Everglades for my birthday.  Literally could not have asked for a better guide than Justin!  What an incredible day!  Justin knew exactly where the peacocks were, he was patient with us and gave us all kinds of tips and quality instruction.  We seriously never stopped catching them all morning!  Even put me on this 7+ lb hog!  Thanks Justin!!  We will definitely see you again one of these days!!

In  Florida, Peacock Bass  species were introduced into the lakes and canals of Miami-Dade County in 1984 after ten years of study by the Game and Fish Commission. Over twenty thousand Butterfly  Peacock Bass  species were released to help control the growing population of exotic fishes, particularly the Spotted Tilapia and Oscar. The  Florida Peacock Bass wasted little time fulfilling its anticipated roles. Almost immediately the population of Spotted Tilapia started to drop. Because of their sensitivity to cold, the only place on the United States mainland  Peacocks  have been successfully stocked has been in South Florida. Peacock Bass cannot, in fact, survive any further north than Broward County or they experience a natural die-off.  Any further north than that despite efforts by well-meaning fisherman transporting them to other locations simply has not worked. Though called bass to raise its game fish status, Peacocks are actually in the cichlid family and is a very close relative to the Oscar, a popular aquarium fish. They grow at a very fast rate, reaching a pound or more in size in their first year, so you can imagine how much they have to eat to fuel that growth! Therefore  Peacock Bass  are ready and willing to viciously attack just about any type lure or bait, especially if retrieved in a lively manner. They just love to attack and destroy streamers and poppers for you fly fishermen and many of the conventional bass lures for you die-hard bass fishermen. It is not uncommon to catch thirty fish or more per day. Once hooked the Peacock Bass puts on a spectacular show that is second to none.

Season –  Florida  Peacock bass fishing is a year-round fishery so you can plan a trip for any time of the year. If you asked what is the best time to come, the answer would be between February to the end of June. During this time of the year, you will have the best chance at a larger butterfly peacock bass. Also between late September and December or until the first cold front approaches. This a great time for schooling fish, rest assured we guarantee you fish no matter when you come down.

The current Florida state record for Butterfly Peacock bass is 9.11 pounds and measuring 26 and 5/16 inches long. It was caught by a local angler Felipe Prieto here in Miami on October 8, 2021, which beats the old record of 9.08 pounds that stood since 1993. It was caught by a local angler Felipe Prieto here in Miami on October 8, 2021, which beats the old record of 9.08 pounds that stood since 1993. But fish up to 12 pounds have been caught; current IGFA all-tackle world record is 12.6 pounds (caught in Venezuela); 13 of the 16 current IGFA world records caught from Florida waters.

CATCH AND RELEASE

CPR (CATCH-PHOTO- RELEASE))

All Peacock bass caught will be released.

Make sure you do it quickly, snap a photo then release.

We encourage the practice of catch and release, so these magnificent fish can fight another day. The real value of this fish is in its use for controlling over-abundant exotic forage fishes and its sporting qualities; therefore FWC encourages anglers to catch and release these fish.

And most mportantly for our future generation to be able to enjoy this great sport as we are now.

New Florida State Record

Love 'em ~ let 'em grow, safe handling/ reviving fish.

It's very important that fish must be handled with care to prevent injuries, make sure to release them back in the water as quickly as possible. To ensure a healthy release, fish must be revived until its strong enough to swim away.

The sexually ripe male is normally identified by a pronounced forehead "hump" of fatty tissue that is stimulated by sexual maturity. Recent scientific evidence also exists that some females may exhibit a small "hump" as well. The hump is reabsorbed within several weeks after spawning.

The hump usually appears on males when they are sexually mature which is around a year old or so.

Peacock bass are voracious predators, they are aggressive, and highly intelligent. Also, they're very fast when ambushing their prey.

Once hooked, it will bend your rod with lightning speed runs, jumps, and headshakes as it will take you around, and under structures or under the weeds in efforts to break free.

So keep the pressure on, your lines tight, and be ready to anticipate its next move.

South Florida is the best Place to Fish for peacock bass and clown knifefish

Capt. Patrick of Swamp to Sea Guide service has been fishing for peacock bass in Florida for over 25 years and has these fish down to a science. The best part about catching peacock bass is the variety of other species you will catch as well. The Lake Ida chain of lakes is home to big largemouth bass, panfish, and exotic fish alike. Fishing for peacock bass in Florida can be done year round and is a non-stop action packed day on the water.

The Florida Clown Knifefish

The Clown Knifefish is only found in Lake Osborne, Lake Ida, and their associated canals in southeast Florida, which puts them right in the heart of the Swamp to Sea Guide Service area. Clown Knife is a species gaining popularity among Florida anglers and visitors alike. Though introduced as a non-native species through improper release from private aquarium collections, this species has flourished in the freshwater systems in the South Florida area. They are commonly caught while fishing for peacock bass and are known for their big jumps and strong fight. Clown Knife fish are typically caught on live shad, but they can be caught using artificial or fly. Capt. Patrick actually holds the World Record for the largest Clown Knifefish, which was caught in Lake Ida.

Peacock Bass Fishing: A Beginner’s Guide

Peacock bass are a bucket list species for many anglers. Here's how to catch these colorful fish in South Florida

By Max Inchausti | Published Mar 25, 2024 6:00 PM EDT

peacock bass

The peacock bass is a bucket list species for many serious anglers. With strong populations in the Amazon River basin, anglers will embark on week-long expeditions deep into the rainforest in search of these extravagant fish. Luckily for the less adventurous, South Florida is a burgeoning hotspot for butterfly peacock bass . In just about any canal or pond, anglers have a chance at catching these hard-fighting and colorful fish. Here’s everything you need to know about peacock bass fishing in South Florida.

A healthy peacock caught flipping docks with soft plastic swimbaits.

Appearance and Biology

The peacock bass hardly resembles the black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) found in North America. In fact, Peacocks are not technically bass but rather a part of the cichlid family, a large group of ray-finned fish commonly found in South America. Well over sixteen species of peacock bass are found in their native range, but the butterfly peacock is the only species found in South Florida.

They are exotic and extravagant fish displaying vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and green. Younger fish will have three vertical dark bars that will continue to fade as they age. A key identifier is a black spot on the caudal fin surrounded by a yellow halo. Male butterfly peacocks will also grow a large hump on top of their head. A typical Florida peacock weighs anywhere from two to four pounds, with true lunkers growing as big as nine pounds. The state record was caught in 2021 , topping the scales at 9.11 pounds.

History and Habitat

To understand the history of butterfly peacock bass in South Florida, you need to understand the history of South Florida’s invasive species. Prior to the introduction of peacock bass, invasive species like oscars and tilapia were taking over many of South Florida’s waterways. With no natural predators, they were left unchecked. The answer: introduce a natural predator. In 1984, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission did just that. Enter the peacock bass.

The first peacocks were released in large coastal canals in Southeast Florida, but they didn’t stay there for long. The canal systems connects endless ponds and lakes, acting as a highway for their movement. They are now found as far north as West Palm Beach and as far west as Naples. Anglers looking for the highest densities and largest fish should seek out canals in Broward and Dade counties.

As a true South American species, they need warm water. Water temps of 75 degrees and up are preferred, with higher water temps resulting in more active fish. While they continue to creep north, long cold snaps and water temperatures in the mid-60s cause die-offs, limiting their northern expansion.

Fishing for Peacock Bass

Peacocks are predatory fish that will eat just about anything they can get their mouths around, including other fish species, amphibians, insects, and even other peacocks. Because of their aggressive predatory drive, a multitude of angling methods can be used to target these bass. Whether you’re a Florida resident or visiting with the goal of landing a colorful exotic, here is everything you should know about targeting peacock bass.

Anglers who revel at the thought of a bobber shooting underwater are in luck. A large shiner is one of the best baits to fool large and wary peacock bass. The large profile and flashy appearance of shinners are a dinner bell to hungry peacocks. The easiest way to fish these is with a small bobber rig. Tie on a live bait hook—my preferred is an octopus-style hook—and mount a float two to three feet above it. You can fish these weightless, but a small split shot will ensure the shiner stays in the strike zone. Pitch the rig near structures like docks and break walls, or float them near vegetation like spatterdock pads and eelgrass beds. The takes are typically aggressive, so watch the float and be ready. In deeper water, shiners can be live-lined without a float, and either be free-swimmed or slowly retrieved.

For those who shy away from live bait, there are plenty of lure options that will fool peacock bass. The name of the game for artificial is fast and flashy. The flash triggers a predatory response and will elicit aggressive strikes. Small inline spinners, like those used in trout fishing, are a great reaction bait. Soft plastic swim baits are another popular choice for peacock fanatics. Baits in the three to five-inch range rigged on a swimbait hook are easy to fish, relatively weedless, and will attract larger peacocks. For added flash, fish with underspin hooks.

When conditions align, topwater lures will draw visual and aggressive strikes. Spooks and small choppers do a great job of making a commotion and attracting fish. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to throw topwater for peacocks, but when the weather is right, it can be an all-day bite.

Whether fishing with live bait or artificial lures, typical peacock bass setups will do the trick. A seven-foot medium or medium-heavy spinning rod with a 3000-size reel is a great all-around setup. This offers the versatility to fish shiners under a dock or swimbaits through the grass. While bass are not particularly line-shy, they do have abrasive pads that will wear through braided line. A two- to three-foot section of 15 to 20-pound fluorocarbon leader offers protection from this abrasion. Above the leader, I spool my reels with 15-pound braid.

Peacock bass are also eager to eat a fly. Small baitfish patterns are usually the ticket. Patterns like an EP minnow or Clouser minnow with a hint of flash will consistently fool fish. Strip them with a steady retrieve through areas where peacocks will likely hide. If you see a fish following your fly, strip faster. The visual of the fly “escaping” is all a peacock needs to see to commit. Fly rods in the six to eight-weight range are sufficient for most peacocks in Florida. If you are targeting true trophy fish, upsize the rod to a nine or ten weight and throw slightly larger flies. A 9-foot tapered bass leader will help turn over heavier peacock flies and withstand the power of the initial strike.

Peacock Bass Fishing: Rules and Regulations

Florida is home to countless non-native fish species, many of which are labeled as invasive. Peacock bass, however, is not invasive. It is the only non-native fish species with regulations in place to properly manage its population. Anglers with a freshwater fishing license are allowed to target and harvest two peacock bass a day. Of these two fish, only one can be over 17 inches.

Why does an exotic fish have its own bag limit? The state of Florida sees peacock bass as a valuable asset that controls other invasive fish and stimulates local economies as a destination fishery. As a result, these fish are managed to optimize size and sustain populations. They can be eaten and taste fairly good, but their true value is as a catch-and-release sport fish.
