Virtual Care E-Visits

A University of Michigan Health Virtual Care  E-Visit is a convenient way to receive health care advice and treatment for common medical needs. It is an asynchronous way to receive care. This means you will send the information needed to treat you. Our health care providers will review and send a treatment plan in response.

There is no appointment or phone call needed for an E-Visit. You can submit one anytime, day or night, using your  MyUofMHealth  Patient Portal account.

What conditions can be treated by an E-Visit?

University of Michigan Health Virtual Care offers E-Visit treatment for a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Our Urgent Care E-Visits are available for symptoms you might normally visit a primary care provider or urgent care clinic for, including:

  • Cough, flu or COVID-19 like symptoms
  • Sinus issues
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Vaginal discharge, irritation, or painful urination

Our Specialty Care E-Visits are available for an ever-growing range of conditions you might normally see a specialist for, including:

  • Dermatology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN)
  • Ophthalmology

Log on to the MyUofMHealth Patient Portal to determine exactly what types of E-Visits are available to you.

How can I access an E-Visit?

Simply follow these steps:

  • Log in to your MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account.
  • Select the E-Visit option under the “Your Menu” tab.
  • Answer a few short questions about your health.
  • Receive a written response from a University of Michigan Health provider via your MyUofMHealth Patient Portal.

Who can submit an E-Visit?

You must be physically located in the State of Michigan to submit an e-visit due to state law and regulations. E-Visits are available for all active (having received care in the last 36 months) University of Michigan Health patients who are enrolled in the MyUofMHealth Patient Portal. E-Visits for patients under the age of 18 must be submitted by a parent or guardian with proxy access.

Learn more about proxy access at MyUofMHealth .

How much does an E-Visit cost?

E-Visits may be fully covered by your insurance. You may verify whether you have coverage for E-Visits by calling your insurance company and asking if the following billing codes are covered: 99421, 99422 and 99423.

What conditions should I not use an E-Visit for?

Do not use an E-Visit if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Headache and stiff neck (can't touch chin to chest)
  • Too weak to stand
  • Fainting or passing out
  • High fever (>104F, 40C)

Convenient and secure online care

What is an e-visit.

Get the Scripps care you need — when you need it — with an online diagnosis through Scripps E-Visit.

E-Visits give you medical advice about minor problems (like a UTI or cold) without having to go to the office or clinic. It’s the convenient, easy, secure way to communicate your symptoms and receive a detailed care plan from a Scripps nurse practitioner or physician assistant completely online.

E-Visits cost up to $30 (depending on your health insurance) and are available to patients with a MyScripps account. It’s just one way to Get Care Now at Scripps .

How it works

Scripps E-Visit starts with an online health questionnaire. You answer some questions about your symptoms and can attach photos. Then, a Scripps nurse practitioner or physician assistant reviews your information and sends back a written care plan. If necessary, prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy.

Responses to E-Visits are available Monday through Friday from 7 am to 7:30 pm, and on Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Access E-Visits through the MyScripps health portal. If you don’t have an account, sign up for MyScripps now .

To start an E-Visit, follow these easy steps:

1) Go to MyScripps

Scripps E-Visit is available on both MyScripps.org and the MyScripps mobile app. You can download the free MyScripps app from the iPhone App Store or Android Google Play Store .

2) Select Messaging

Find it under the menu items, then pick Ask a Question. (Skip this step if you are using the app.)

3) Select Symptom-Specific E-Visit

Review and agree to terms and conditions, then confirm your payment information.

4) Enter the reason for this E-Visit

Confirm your preferred pharmacy, then answer a few questions about your symptoms and how you’re feeling.

Once you’ve entered this information, you’ll receive confirmation that it was received by our medical team. A Scripps nurse practitioner or physician assistant will review your reported symptoms and health history, then get back to you through the MyScripps portal. Your treatment plan may include prescriptions or recommendations for follow-up care. Prescriptions can be electronically sent to your pharmacy.

Note: E-Visits are not appropriate for severe or life-threatening symptoms. If you need emergency care, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Symptoms and conditions

  • Female urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Female yeast infection
  • Pink eye or stye
  • Cold/flu (excluding cough)
  • COVID-19 screening

Pricing and payment

Cost for a Scripps E-Visit varies, depending on whether you use insurance. If you do not use insurance, the self-pay rate is $30. You can pay with a credit or debit card. If your E-Visit cannot be completed for any reason, you will not be charged.

If you have a flexible spending account, your $30 fee may be reimbursable. Check with your insurance plan.

Use E-visits to securely, privately, and conveniently communicate with your Duke providers. This enhanced online messaging system allows you to receive safe medical care through My Duke Health (previously Duke MyChart) without disrupting your day for an in-person or video visit. E-visits take place on a computer or mobile device at a time that is convenient to you and do not require a camera or videoconferencing software.

An E-visit can be initiated at any time. While we generally respond within four hours (Monday through Friday), responses can take up to one business day. If you do not receive a response or your symptoms get worse, please contact your doctor's office. Many insurance plans cover E-visits, but you may have out-of-pocket costs. Reach out to your insurance company if you have questions. If your provider decides you need a virtual video visit or an in-person visit instead, you will not be charged for the E-visit.

At this time, people ages 18 and older can participate in E-visits. You must also be located in North Carolina at the time of the visit.

You need a My Duke Health account to participate in an E-visit. If you don’t have one, please use the link below or call 919-620-4555 or 800-782-6945 to receive an activation code. Our phone lines are open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Conditions Appropriate for an E-visit

  • Bladder infection or urinary tract infection
  • COVID-19 treatment
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Gout attack
  • Motion sickness
  • Poison ivy
  • Sinus infection
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Quit smoking

You can use My Duke Health to schedule a virtual video appointment when you want medical attention for a minor medical issue. You must be six months or older, and you must have a My Duke Health account to schedule an appointment. Virtual visits are covered by insurance as primary care visits. Copays, co-insurance, and deductibles apply.

After your provider has all the information they need, they can provide you with advice and prescribe any necessary medications. Things to know about telehealth

What is telehealth.

Telehealth – sometimes called virtual visits – is another way for you to get health care with a provider . Instead of driving to a clinic or your provider’s office, you can hop on your mobile device or computer to receive a diagnosis and treatment plan when and where you need it.

What types of care can I get using telehealth?

With telehealth, you have the option to see your own primary care provider via video visit during office hours or hop on a video visit to get care from the next available provider. We call this 24-hour care a Quick Care Video Visit.

E-visits are also a great option to get care any time of day. Just complete a questionnaire and get an email response from any provider within an hour. To see if an e-visit is a telehealth option for you, use Symptom Checker. This tool can help you find the right type of care based on your symptoms.

What are the benefits of telehealth?

The biggest benefit of telehealth is getting health care without leaving the house when you’re sick. Just answer a few questions about your symptoms, then get care from a provider at a time that’s convenient for you. You also don’t have to worry about taking your sick child out of the house and into a busy waiting room.

Who can use telehealth?

Telehealth services are available to almost everyone in your family, though kids younger than 2 years old still need to be seen by their own provider. Ask your child’s pediatrician about scheduling a video visit or an in-person appointment instead.

If you’re 18 or older and physically located in Illinois, Wisconsin or Michigan, you can request a video visit. You also can request video visits for kids ages 2-17 if you’re their legally authorized representative.

Are telehealth visits safe?

When doing telehealth visits, you can rest assured we protect your health information . Video visits are powered by Zoom and feature telehealth security measures such as meeting IDs and visit verifications to ensure only you and the provider have access to your visit. We also keep your personal information safe when you’re recommended an e-visit when using Symptom Checker.

Can I use telehealth if I think I have COVID?

Yes, you can. If you think you’re experiencing COVID symptoms, contact your primary care provider. They may be able to see you the same day in person or with a video visit. You also can hop on a Quick Care Video Visit for 24-hour care to discuss your symptoms and testing options.

If you’ve tested positive for COVID, you can also use Symptom Checker to help you find the right type of care. Your telehealth options could include an e-visit.

Existing patients with a MyChart  account can use e-visits to seek treatment for non-urgent, common symptoms and conditions without having to step foot in the office. It’s a fast, convenient way to have your health concerns addressed by your primary care provider .

What is an E-Visit?

An e-visit is an online questionnaire, in which your provider can give you medical advice via secure message. When filling out the questionnaire, you are asked to share details about the reason you are contacting your doctor and to verify personal and medical information.

Once completed, you submit the form to your primary care provider who will review your answers and respond to you with a plan of care, including any prescriptions needed, in about two business days or less. If you need care more urgently, please contact your provider’s office or schedule a Same-Day Care appointment .

E-Visits are not covered by insurance. A flat fee of $25 will be charged to your account when you submit the e-visit. OSU Health Plan members will not be charged for e-visits.

Your provider’s office may contact you for more information about your symptoms. If it’s decided that you need to be further evaluated in the office or through a scheduled video visit , your e-visit will be canceled and transitioned to one of these appointment types, and you will not be charged the $25 fee.

Your primary care provider can treat the following using an e-visit:

  • Sinus problems
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Cold/flu symptoms (including possible COVID-19)
  • Vaginal irritation/discharge

How do I have an E-Visit?

You can have an e-visit with a primary care provider that you have seen within the past two years.

Step 1: Log in to your MyChart account on a computer or through the MyHealth app on your mobile device.

  • In the mobile app: Choose the “E-Visit” icon on home screen
  • On desktop: Choose “Schedule an Appointment” and then select “E-Visit” icon on the right

Step 2: Accept the terms and conditions

Step 3: Fill out the reason for your visit, confirm your provider and preferred pharmacy

Step 4: Verify your personal information

Step 5: Complete the questionnaire with more detail about your health concern

Step 6: Select a provider from the drop-down list and submit your e-visit request

Step 7: Wait for your provider to respond within two business days

Troubleshooting and tips

If you do not hear from your provider within two business days, please call the office. If you need care more urgently, an e-visit may not be your best option. Contact your provider’s office or schedule a Same-Day Care appointment .

If you have any trouble submitting your e-visit request or have problems with your MyChart account, visit the MyChart Technical Support page , call 614-366-6975 or email [email protected] .

The fastest path to care

Available 24/7 with no appointment, e-visits offer Kaiser Permanente members quick, convenient online care for many health concerns such as flu or COVID-19 symptoms.

Members can complete an online e-visit at kp.org/getcare to get screened for COVID-19, treated for symptoms, and scheduled for a diagnostic test in many areas.

“First choice for care.” “Reassuring.” “Simple to use.”

These words are how Kaiser Permanente members have described their experiences throughout the COVID-19 pandemic when they’ve turned to e-visits to receive care and advice for common conditions from the safety of their homes.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise and we are being asked to stay safe and stay home as much as possible, e-visits stand out as a convenient, easy, and fast path to care and advice for people experiencing flu and COVID-19 symptoms .

How e-visits work

Members can complete an e-visit in minutes — online, with no appointment required — to be screened for COVID-19 and treated for symptoms, if necessary. Members can also complete an e-visit to request or schedule a COVID-19 diagnostic test in many areas. E-visits can also be used to receive treatment, advice, and prescriptions for many common conditions such as cold and flu symptoms, rashes, urinary tract infections, pink eye, and more depending on the member’s age, location, and medical history.

“It is important to get the care you need if you don’t feel well this winter or are concerned you might have the flu or COVID-19,” said Brad Schwartz, MD, an emergency room physician who helped develop the e-visit protocols. “For Kaiser Permanente members, e-visits can provide the shortest route to quality care.”

To start an e-visit, our members can sign in to kp.org or the Kaiser Permanente app at any time during the day or night. After selecting the e-visit option, members are guided through a short series of questions about their symptoms and concerns.

Based on the answers, the member will immediately receive personalized self-care advice, which may include educational materials and videos or a recommendation for over-the-counter medications. If a prescribed medication is recommended, the member will receive a prescription from a clinician during regular business hours via email, usually within 2 to 4 hours of the e-visit.

In some cases, the member will be instructed to schedule an in-person, video, or telephone appointment. E-visit responses become part of a member’s secure electronic health record, helping to ensure better, easier, and safer follow-up care.

Other care options

If an e-visit isn’t available for a health concern, or for people who prefer a different option, video and phone appointments are a safe, easy, and convenient way to get the same high-quality care as you would during an in-person visit. During a virtual appointment, clinicians can securely access a member’s medical history, prescribe medications, order lab tests and imaging, and refer members for additional care as needed.

Kaiser Permanente members can also email their doctor’s office with nonurgent questions or call our appointment and advice line to speak with a licensed care provider day or night. In some areas, members can chat online with a clinician about symptoms and concerns. For members who need to be seen in person, our facilities have implemented many safety precautions, such as requiring masks and physical distancing, following enhanced cleaning protocols, and more.

Your answers will be reviewed by an Essentia provider who will make a diagnosis and create a personalized care plan just for you. You’ll also be given a phone number to call if you have any questions or concerns about your care plan.

The whole process usually takes 60 minutes or less, and if it takes longer, your visit is free. You can  start your E-Visit online , or if you are an existing Essentia patient and have a  MyChart  account, you can access the service via the portal.  i

If for some reason, your condition cannot be treated online, your provider may recommend that you seek in-person care with your primary care provider or same-day care like Urgent Care.

Virtual e-Visits

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) supports enhanced-access physician-patient interactions, including electronic visits or “virtual e-visits” which occur over safe, secure, online communication systems. AAFP defines a virtual e-visit as an evaluation and management service provided by a physician or other qualified health professional to a patient using a web-based or similar electronic-based communication network for a single patient encounter.

Guidelines for virtual e-visits:

  • Available technology capabilities as well as an existing physician-patient relationship impact whether the standard of care can be achieved for a virtual visit, and clinical guidelines or protocols should be in place that identify whether a virtual visit for the chief complaint/presenting complaints and active diagnoses meet the standard of care;
  • The patient agrees to virtual visit service terms, privacy policy, and charge for receiving a virtual visit from a physician or other qualified health professional;
  • Electronic communication occurs over a HIPAA-compliant online connection;
  • A virtual e-visit includes the total interchange of online inquiries and other communications associated with this single patient encounter;
  • The physician or provider appropriately documents the virtual visit, including all pertinent communication related to the encounter, in the patient’s medical/health record;
  • The physician or other qualified health professional has a defined period of time within which responses to a virtual visit request are completed;
  • The treating physician or provider within a virtual visit should forward a summary of the visit to the patient’s primary care physician or medical home, and communicate with the primary care physician as necessary; and
  • Virtual e-visits should be a payable physician service.

Help Along The Way

Answers to Your E-Visit Questions

What is an e-visit?

An e-visit is a virtual visit with your provider that allows you to receive a diagnosis and treatment plan for common, non-urgent medical conditions. No appointment or phone call is needed. E-visits with your provider are as simple as logging in to My UC Health and completing one of the following.

  • E-visit questionnaire: Choose from a list of common healthcare services.
  • E-visit message with your provider : Sending a message to your provider in MyChart is not always considered an e-visit. However, when a response from your healthcare provider requires clinical evaluation or medical advice that takes more than a few minutes, your provider’s response would qualify as an E-Visit and will be billed to your insurance.

When you start an e-visit, you can expect a response within three (3) business days. All e-visit communication occurs in writing through your My UC Health account. There is no video, visual, photo or verbal contact between you and your provider.

How do I start an e-visit?

To use this service, you must be at least 18 years of age and have been seen by a UC Health provider in the last 12 months. Due to differing state laws and regulations regarding the practice of medicine, e-visits are only available for patients located in Ohio.

Here’s how to start your e-visit:

Log into My UC Health .

Option 1: E-Visit Questionnaire - Click on the e-visit icon. Accept the terms and conditions. Answer a series of questions about your health.

Option 2: E-Visit Message – Sending a message to your provider in MyChart is not always considered an e-visit. However, starting May 15, 2023, when a response from your healthcare provider requires clinical evaluation or medical advice that takes more than a few minutes, your provider’s response would qualify as an E-Visit and will be billed to your insurance. Even if an e-visit message is billed to insurance, some patients won't have to pay anything. View ‘cost’ section below for details.

To send a message to your provider via MyChart, click on the messages icon. Select “Send a message” and follow the prompts that match your needs.

Once submitted, your provider will review your healthcare inquiry and respond back via your My UC Health (MyChart) account within three (3) business days.

For questions about your e-visit, please call your doctor’s office or 513-475-8000.

For technical assistance, please call the My UC Health help desk at 513-585-5353.

What can I expect during an e-visit?

The length of your e-visit depends on how quickly you answer the questions about your condition, symptoms or healthcare-related inquiry. You may be asked for details regarding your insurance, payment, or medications. Please be prepared to verify or add this information. When using the questionnaire, you cannot save your progress and finish later.

If your new e-visit is directly related to a condition or health-related request that has been addressed by your provider in the past seven (7) calendar days, please call the office.

How much will my e-visit cost?

UC Health offers e-visits through My UC Health (MyChart). E-visits may be covered by some health insurance carriers. UC Health will send an invoice to your insurance carrier after each visit. If you have a deductible, copay, or a remaining balance, you will receive a bill for the e-visit based on your benefits and defined by your insurance carrier.  If you do not have insurance coverage, you will receive a bill for your e-visit appointment with a 40% discount applied.  If you do not complete the e-visit, you will not be charged. If you are redirected to the office, you also may not be charged. If your e-visit ends with a decision that the physician needs to see you in the office at the next available appointment, the e-visit encounter is considered part of the preservice work of the subsequent office visit, and you will not be charged separately. Even if an e-visit is billed to insurance, some patients won't have to pay anything. For those who do, out-of-pocket expenses for this type of care vary by insurance plan and are often low. Here's what to expect:

  • Medicare: For most patients, no out-of-pocket cost. For a small number of patients, the cost could be $3 to $6.
  • Medicaid: No out-of-pocket costs.
  • Private insurance: Some patients will have co-payments similar to those for in-person visits (common copays are $13-$20). If a deductible applies, the amount may be greater, usually averaging around $22-$50.
  • No insurance: Patients will have an out-of-pocket cost that ranges from $21-$69.

To learn your out-of-pocket cost for an e-visit message, contact your insurer. If the representative asks for a "CPT code" to help them identify this type of visit, the relevant codes are 99421, 99422 and 99423 (these three codes reflect varying amounts of time your provider may spend handling a particular message). You can also use UC Health’s cost estimates feature to calculate the approximate cost.

What e-visits will be billed to my insurance?

There are two types of e-visits available in My UC Health (MyChart) that may be billed to your insurance:

  • E-visit questionnaires: Choose from a list of common healthcare services.
  • E-visit message with your provider : Sending a message to your provider in MyChart is not always considered an e-visit. However, starting May 15, 2023, when a response from your healthcare provider requires clinical evaluation or medical advice that takes more than a few minutes, your provider’s response would qualify as an E-Visit and will be billed to your insurance.

Examples of e-visit messages that may be billed to insurance:

  • A new issue or symptom requiring medical assessment or referral.
  • Adjusting medications.
  • Chronic disease check-in.
  • Flare-up or change in chronic long-term condition.
  • Request to complete a medical form.

What e-visit messages will not be billed to my insurance nor charged to me?

If your e-visit message does not require clinical evaluation nor medical advice from a healthcare provider—or if it can be answered quickly and easily—it won't cost you anything.

Examples of e-visit messages that won't be billed to insurance or you:

  • Request for a prescription refill.
  • Request to schedule an appointment.
  • Message that leads your provider to recommend a visit.
  • Asking a question about an issue/request you had a visit with your provider for in the last seven calendar (7) days.
  • Follow-up care related to a recent surgery (within the past 90 days), with exceptions for some surgeries.
  • Update for your doctor when no response is needed.
  • Message that takes your provider less than a few minutes to answer.

When are e-visit services available?

You can request an e-visit any day or time. You should receive a response back from your provider within three (3) business days.

Can I use e-visits for emergencies or urgent care needs?

online e visit

Having a trusted relationship with a primary care provider is key to achieving and sustaining good health. But finding an available appointment on a day and time that is convenient for you can be challenging in today’s world, where primary care providers are in high demand.

The good news is that MedStar Health offers a variety of options to help find and maintain regular care with your primary care provider, supported by a network of outstanding clinicians and specialists. In fact, we’re making it easier than ever to get the medical care you need at the moment you need it, in a location that is most convenient for you.

How to access our primary care and urgent care providers.

An in-person visit serves as the gateway to a variety of convenient care options..

Ideally, It’s important to begin your care by meeting face-to-face with a MedStar Health primary care provider . In this initial visit, we can get to know your medical history and what’s important to you and establish a baseline of care. By learning about who you are, your background, and your goals, we can advocate for you, help you stay on top of preventative healthcare measures, such as screening and vaccinations, and track any changes over time. Primary care providers are essentially the quarterback of your healthcare team, able to seamlessly coordinate and communicate with other specialists in the MedStar Health network when you need them.

How to schedule an in-person primary care appointment.

To find a primary care provider near you, visit MedStarHealth.org/PrimaryCare or search for a provider using our ”Find A Doc” tool . There are several different ways you can schedule a primary care appointment with a MedStar Health provider:

  • Call the provider’s office to speak with someone who can help to coordinate your appointment at a convenient time for you
  • Fill out an online form with your contact information for someone to reach out to you to schedule a primary care appointment
  • Schedule an appointment for yourself online through some of our primary care provider’s profiles

Virtual visits expand your ability to get seen by your care team, when you need them.

After you’ve built a trusted relationship with a primary care provider , we can offer additional options to ensure you get the medical care you need when something unexpected comes up. When you really need to speak with your doctor or nurse practitioner but they aren’t available when it’s convenient for you or you aren’t physically able to come into the office, a virtual visit may be a great option. During a virtual appointment , you can talk to another exceptional healthcare provider who works closely with your primary care provider. This ensures you can get answers to any questions you have in a timely manner, from the comfort of your home. Because your primary care provider stays in close communication with their entire team, you can expect to have continuity of care whether you see us in-person or via video.

In fact, our extensive network of specialists, surgeons, and subspecialists shares one electronic health record, communicating regularly to ensure you have the comprehensive, individualized care you need. Many of these specialists are also available via a virtual visit, ensuring you can get seen when you need care. Your primary care provider also stays informed on your care and condition, whether through verbal communication between our teams or through our interconnected records. This allows us to all work together as a team to offer you the best possible care now and in the future.

MedStar Health Urgent Care options ensure you get prompt care for immediate concerns.

When your primary care provider’s office is closed or you can’t find an appointment that is convenient for you, you can access one of our 30 MedStar Health Urgent Care locations throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our urgent care centers offer access to exceptional providers who can help care for you or direct you to the right point of care when something unexpected comes up. They’re open every day, including weekends and extended hours so you have options outside of typical working hours. Additionally, you may even be able to connect to a medical specialist during your visit, when necessary.

We’re here for you 24/7, 365 days a year through MedStar eVisit.

We know that illness and injury seems to happen at the most inconvenient times, such as a Friday evening or a holiday weekend. Where can you find urgent care when most doctor’s offices are closed? MedStar eVisit offers on-demand access to an urgent care provider via video with no appointment needed. With eVisit, you can access great care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. This ensures we can meet your needs any time you need us. In many cases, you may get everything addressed in this virtual visit . But if you need additional care beyond the video visit, they can direct you to the most appropriate access point so you can have confidence and comfort in knowing what next steps to take.

Watch the Facebook live broadcast below to learn more about primary care access:
