Why choose Real Alaska Outdoors?

Let me introduce myself, the name is Davis and I’ve been here enough winters now to call myself an Alaskan. Originally from Orlando, FL where I grew up and went to school. I graduated Le Cordon Bleu and received my culinary arts degree. That degree is what landed me in Alaska. To finish school I had to do an externship somewhere. I had just got into the “Into The wWild” story and that sparked an interest in Alaska and curated that wilderness free spirit. So naturally, I took off and spent a summer cooking meals for guests, barreling down railroad tracks through the Alaskan wilderness. Glaciers here, mountains there… wait, thats a dall sheep on that mountain!

After the best summer of my life, I decided to make Alaska my home. I spent the next 5 years cooking on the Alaska railroad and another 5 more working in some form of Alaskan cuisine – from a gourmet grilled cheese food truck to handmade Alaskan ice cream – and getting engulfed in Alaskas nature and hospitality industries.

I think anyone can have a good vacation and no matter what someone does in Alaska they’ll have the time of their lives doing it. I bring a unique culinary aspect to the tourism industry here. I intertwine adventure with cuisine by cooking from scratch meals in front of places like glaciers that are thousands of years old, on the banks of a lake with mountain tops mirroring off of them or even just waiting for someone as soon as they hop off an exhilarating excursion. That’s what I do. I mix Alaskan adventure with culinary, in a packaged experience. Whatever brings someone to Alaska, why not be guided and cooked for… in the ALASKAN WILDERNESS?

?

The Real Alaska Tour is by far the best way to see Seward in a day, especially for those without included transportation. If you are planning to book the Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic train (not included in the price of this tour), this is the perfect tour to complement it.

On this scenic Alaska tour, you'll visit the home of five Iditarod racers since 1963, spanning three generations and 100 champion sled dogs. The real Alaskan adventure begins with a two-mile dog sled ride. Feel the power, excitement, and energy of our amazing sled dogs as they are harnessed to our comfortable wheeled sleds. The ride lasts approximately 35 minutes and wheeled sleds can hold up to a maximum of eight guests.

The intrigue of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, also known as Alaska's Super Bowl, comes alive as you mush through the Alaskan wilderness to the base of Resurrection Mountain and along Box Canyon Creek. Your guide will thrill and excite you with stories from the trail as you experience the raw power of 13 Iditarod sled dogs.

Upon return to the kennel, tour the kennel facilities, laugh as a guest is dressed up as an Iditarod musher, and cuddle adorable husky puppies. Your guide offers a delightfully humorous, behind-the-scenes look at the family's training for the most demanding race on earth.

Then head to Kenai Fjords National Park, where you will walk to Exit Glacier. The walk takes about an hour over moderate terrain. The trail takes you to either an overlook or the face of the glacial ice, but does not continue onto the glacier. Along the trail, watch for mountain goats, moose or bears on the mountainside. During the salmon runs, see salmon swimming upstream to spawn. If, for any reason, you do not want to do the hike, you may stay in the Kenai Fjords National Park Nature Center. You will still be afforded excellent views of Exit Glacier as you can view it on the drive in.

A hearty lunch will be served at a local restaurant before taking in the fascinating history and breathtaking beauty of Seward, known as The Gateway to Alaska and Mile 0 of the Iditarod Trail. See first-hand the effects of the 1964 Earthquake and stand in awe of the mountain that is home to the second-oldest foot race in the United States. In season, your guide may even show you the salmon spawning in Bear Creek Weir. Book now for an exciting and fun-filled day in Seward, Alaska.

PRE-CRUISE: Guests arriving in Seward from Anchorage on the Southbound Coastal Classic train should check their luggage through to their cruise ship when boarding the train in Anchorage. Hand luggage can be taken on the tour bus with you. Your cruise must be departing Seward after 7:30PM for you to take this tour.

POST-CRUISE: Guests disembarking (ending) a cruise in Seward should check with their cruise line about having their luggage delivered to the train depot. If your cruise line does not offer this service, guests will need to bring their luggage to the train terminal for train check-in and luggage storage before the tour. Your tour will end at the train station in time for you to collect your luggage and board the northbound Coastal Classic scheduled to depart at 6:00 PM. Guests overnighting in Seward should check with their accommodations about luggage storage.

Real Alaska Tour - A GREAT day in Seward!

Our family (2 parents, 3 kids) spent a day on Seavey's "Real Alaska Tour," which starts with a pick-up at the Alaska Railroad depot in Seward (timed to meet the 11:05 train from Anchorage). We drove our own car and parked in the depot's parking lot. The van held around 20 people, and it was almost full. We were taken first to Seavey's location outside Seward for a sled dog ride and a lot of discussion about the dogs. This was a fantastic experience, with very knowledgeable guides/mushers. Having already attended Seavey's rodeo in Anchorage (see my separate review), we were able to compare the two and to see the Seward operation as being first-rate (with the Anchorage operation being about third-rate). Following a good sit-down lunch at a local restaurant, our tour guide then took us to Exit Glacier, where we hiked for about 1/2 mile uphill to examine the glacier up close (caution: although not hazardous, the hike is somewhat demanding and does demand one's full attention to avoid slipping, etc.). Our guide explained quite a bit about the glacier's formation, movement, and so on. One huge and vivid takeaway: global climate change is real, and you can see it as you track the changes in the glacier's placement over the last few years. The afternoon continued with a visit to a salmon run and a short tour through downtown Seward. Although the town is very small, there is a lot of interesting history, much of it associated with the 1964 earthquake. Overall, this was a superb tour - well organized and professional from top to bottom.

I confess the appeal of the dogs was the main reason for our choosing this tour, but in additional to the wonderful dogs, including puppies, the information about the Idatarod is fascinating, and beautifully told by expert musher, Dallas Seavey. The demonstrations of the skills and strength of the canine athletes will amaze and to top it all, dinner was fantastic.

I'm a big dog lover and fan of the Iditarod so was very excited about doing this tour. It was everything I hoped it would be. We had a great guide, got to meet and pat the sled dogs, went for a ride in the cart (dog power in amazing) and got to meet the puppies. My husband wasn't as keen to go as I was but he loved the tour too. I'd go again tomorrow if I could. Oh, and if you need a warm jacket they have fantastic ones at a great price.

This tour is a must for anyone interested in the Iditarod. The Seavey family contains several mushers, including the winner from 2004. The show features their actual sled dogs and is educational while also being extremely entertaining. You get to learn what makes a good sled dog and just what the dogs and mushers go through during the race and what kind of training is required. You even get to see a team of dogs pull a large truck from a stand still! After the show, you get to hold puppies and meet several of the dogs who were featured in the show. It is very hands on, and the mushers are available to answer any questions. There is a dinner available after the show that is optional, but we did not participate in that.

One of the coolest things I have ever done! As an owner of three rescue dogs, I was in heaven! What incredible athletes and the mushers were terrific! Got a chance to do the Alaska tour that gave us a chance to jump in a cart on wheels weighing about 1200 lbs with all of us in it and watch 14 of the world's greatest athletes around the spectacular scenery! Also, got a guided tour of the Exit Glacier and the town of Seward. A great day with the dogs (and puppies!) and all the folks at Seavey, 2004 Iditarod Champion team! Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I’ve cruised all over the world, and I can honestly say there’s no other cruise experience that quite compares to an Alaska cruise. Seeing the untouched landscapes, glacier-dotted shorelines, and bears at play really puts life into perspective—and makes for a truly unforgettable travel experience no matter your age.

Many people choose to make an Alaska cruise their first foray into cruising . First timers are attracted to the state’s majestic beauty, but not necessarily savvy to the bounty that a cruise ship offers. If you’re considering a cruise to America’s Last Frontier, here’s how to make the most of it.

EVERYTHING’S INCLUDED: 7 Best All-Inclusive Cruise Lines in the World

1. You can Save Money by Cruising to Alaska in May, June, and September

The Alaska cruise season is brief. Alaska cruises start each year in May and run through early October. The most popular (and expensive) months to cruise are July and August, coinciding with summer family vacations and translating into ships that are often filled with kids.

If you aren’t tethered to a school-year schedule ( or don’t mind taking your kids out of school ), you may want to consider a shoulder season cruise to Alaska. This translates to sailings in late May, June, or September. On these shoulder season cruises, you’re likely to find lower prices and less crowded cruise ships.

2. Pack for All Four Seasons (and Don’t Forget Binoculars)

Alaska’s climate is notoriously unpredictable. I advise packing warm clothes that are easy to layer on and peel off. Bringing gloves, hats, and a scarf is not unreasonable. On the flip side, Alaska is quite far north, and long summer days offer midnight sun and potentially warm temperatures. Many ships have swimming pools and hot tubs, so don’t forget bathing suits and sunscreen .

A comfortable pair of walking shoes are a must if you want to keep your feet feeling good as you explore each port of call. Binoculars can help you spot a range of animals in their natural habitat. Make sure each person in your group has their own pair so they can spot Alaska’s Big Five land mammals (Black and brown bears, moose, wolves, caribou, and Dall sheep) as well as orcas, puffins, and bald eagles.

3. Shore Excursions Are a Must

As wonderful as shipboard life is, to really experience Alaska you need to disembark at each port of call. Getting off the ship is a great way to get in touch with native Alaskan culture that’s reflected in towering totem poles, hand-woven decorative fabrics, and other native crafts. Alaska cruises offer dozens of shore excursions from whale-watching to dogsledding, many curated with kids and families in mind.

4. How to Choose between The Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska

The sheltered waterway known as the Inside Passage is a very popular cruise route. As your ship weaves through a patchwork of islands, with fjords and glaciers thrown in for good measure, you’ll witness wildlife and scenery that looks lifted from a postcard. Alaska cruises taking this route usually make a round-trip journey from either Seattle or Vancouver, cities that have major airports with numerous flight options.

WHERE TO GO: 25 Best Family Vacation Spots in the U.S. for All Ages

The other popular cruise itinerary is the Gulf of Alaska, a stretch of the Pacific Ocean that hugs the southern coast. This equally scenic itinerary is usually a one-way sailing, departing from Seattle or Vancouver and terminating in either Whittier or Seward, Alaska (or vice versa). If you want to add on post- or pre-cruise destinations such as Anchorage and Denali National Park, starting or ending your cruise in Alaska makes it easy to do so.

Keep in mind you will arrive and depart from different cities, requiring the purchase of a multi-city airline ticket (unless you live within driving distance from Seattle or Vancouver), which can be quite costly.

5. Utilize the Onboard Naturalist

Booking an Alaska cruise cruise that has an onboard naturalist is a no-brainer. On my recent Princess cruise to Alaska, our Canadian naturalist went above and beyond his job’s description, spending each evening on deck 16 hanging out with passengers, helping us spot humpback whales and see the Northern Lights until well past midnight.

Small ship cruise lines such as  Lindblad Expeditions, which partners with National Geographic , offer families a deep dive into the natural world with the expertise of naturalists who cater to curious kids as they learn environmental stewardship.

If your ship takes you to Glacier Bay National Park, park rangers are usually brought on board as the ship cruises through the park, helping you to better understand the fragile beauty surrounding you.

6. Spring for an Exterior Stateroom

While interior cabins will save you money, Alaska’s eye-candy beauty and abundance of wildlife merit the added expense of an exterior stateroom (with a balcony if available). From the moment you wake up, you’ll be treated to spellbinding scenery at all hours.

7. Don’t Skip the Buffet

While many large and mid-size cruise ships promote their specialty restaurants, these dining options usually incur an extra fee, which can quickly add up when you’re booking a table for your entire family. The ship’s buffet is a low-stakes, no-additional-cost way for kids to sample global cuisine. If crowds are a deterrent, hit the buffet a bit early or late, when lines tend to be thinner.

MAKE MEMORIES: 50 Family Vacation Ideas for the Best Trip Ever

On my family’s recent Alaska cruise, we were thrilled with the smorgasbord of edible delights from across the world. We couldn’t get enough of the authentic Indian food, feasting on tandoori chicken and fragrant curries served with refreshing raitas and savory chutneys. The Chinese food section let us customize our stir-fry with veggies and proteins of our choice, including tofu, perfect for my vegetarian daughter.

8. Be Prepared for Some Seasickness

The Inside Passage is sheltered, equaling waters that are usually quite calm. However, if your itinerary crosses the Gulf of Alaska, the sea tends to be rougher. Whichever route your ship takes, being prepared with seasickness remedies is essential. I don’t suffer from sea sickness but my daughter uses Sea-Band acupressure wristbands with good results.

9. Take Advantage of Onboard Activities

Most large and mid-size cruise ships sailing Alaska itineraries have age-appropriate supervised clubs for kids and teens at no additional cost. These programs give young passengers the opportunity to spend time with their peers and try new activities, freeing parents to enjoy a bit of adult time.

BRING THE KIDS: 7 Great Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

Cruise ships offer a range of ways for families to spend time together. Try a game of pickleball on all Holland America ships or enjoy a ride on the bumper cars at Royal Caribbean’s SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity complex at sea. Evening entertainment, including Broadway-style musical performances on Disney cruises, is always a highlight as well.

10. Discounts for Kids Are Real and Significant

Keep an eye out for periodic kids sail free deals where children ages 18 and under can sail for no charge beyond taxes, fees, and port expenses. These promotions make a family vacation more affordable. Holland America is one cruise line that offers these bargains frequently on Alaska cruises, while small ships such as Lindblad and UnCruise always offer a $500 discount for children.

Your adventure begins with a 2-mile dog sled ride. Feel the power, excitement, and energy of our amazing sled dogs as they are harnessed to our comfortable wheeled sleds on this hour and a half dog sled tour. Mush through the Seward Alaska wilderness to the base of Resurrection Mountain and along Box Canyon Creek. Your guide will explain how we train and steer the dogs, and tell stories from the trail.

Upon return to the kennel, tour our beautiful kennel facilities, laugh as a guest is dressed up as an Iditarod musher and cuddle adorable husky puppies*. Our guides offer a delightfully humorous, behind-the-scenes look at the Seavey family’s training for the most demanding race on earth.

*We typically have puppies from late May through September of each year.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is the sled dog ride and kennel tour.

Our Wilderness Dog Sled Tour is 1.5 hours long. You should arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour to check-in.

CAN YOU PICK ME UP FROM MY HOTEL? WHEN WILL YOU PICK ME UP?

We pick up at most Seward hotels and attractions by reservation. We have a two person minimum for pick-ups and we generally pick up about half an hour before the start of your tour time.

HOW FAR OUT OF SEWARD ARE YOU LOCATED?

We are ten minutes outside of downtown Seward.

HOW MUCH TIME DO WE SPEND WITH THE DOGS?

Our tour is focused entirely around our dogs. You will get to spend plenty of time with them throughout the tour. We even have time to play with puppies.

HOW LONG IS THE RIDE?

The ride lasts approximately 35 minutes and we travel about 2 miles.

I AM COMING OFF THE MAJOR MARINE/KENAI FJORDS CRUISE. WHAT TOUR WOULD BE BEST FOR ME?

Our tour at 8:30am finishes at 10, giving you plenty of time to get to an 11:00 boat. Otherwise the 6:30pm tour is an option after your cruise.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER USUALLY LIKE?

Seward is located in a temperate rain forest so we do get a fair amount of rain, but our tours are almost entirely covered so you will have minimal exposure. Still, it is always best to be prepared. We suggest dressing in layers and bringing a rain jacket if you have one.  The temperature is typically somewhere between 50 and 65 degrees.

DO YOU HAVE A WEIGHT LIMIT?

No. We consider the summer as weight-lifting program for the dogs.

IS THERE ANY OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH MUSHERS AND ASK QUESTIONS?

Yes. You’ll have plenty of time to talk with your musher guide throughout the tour.

UNTIL WHEN DO YOU HAVE SNOW?

We typically have snow until the end of March. You can mush on snow during the summer, but it requires taking a helicopter to an ice field.  Check out our Glacier Sled Dog Tours .

IS ONE TOUR TIME BETTER THAN ANOTHER?

The dogs stay excited throughout the day, but you're welcome to call the reservation line and ask which tour is the least busy on a given day.

WHAT TYPE OF GEAR SHOULD I BRING?

We recommend dressing in layers as you never know that the weather is going to do. A rain jacket is always recommended as if you bring it you probably won’t need it. We also recommend bringing a layer you don’t mind getting soiled as puppies can have accidents!

ARE THE SLEDS ON WHEELS?

Yes. During the summer months, our tours are operated using wheeled sleds.

HOW BUMPY IS THE RIDE, WHO CAN SAFELY RIDE?

Our sleds have padded seats and airbag suspension.  We've had countless guests with bad backs, in the first two trimesters of pregnancy, were elderly, etc. and never had a guest express discomfort. Our tour is not wheelchair accessible, however wheelchairs and walker can be used around the kennel, so long as guests can take the two steps (with help) into the cart, they should have no problem.

Donkey who inspired popular ‘Shrek’ character in need of medical funds

PALO ALTO, Calif. (KPIX) – A community in California is stepping in to help the animal who directly inspired the beloved character Donkey in the “Shrek” film franchise.

Perry, the real life Donkey, lives in Palo Alto.

He is getting older – about to turn 30 this weekend – and having more medical issues as he ages.

The bills are starting to stack up, so the city offered to match community donations of up to $10,000 as a one-time grant offer.

As of June 3, the city has matched $4,000.

The deadline for patrons to match their grant funds is June 23.

Donations can be made to the care of the donkeys here .
