SELF-GUIDED TOUR
This tour, depending on your pace will take 3-4 hours, not including travel time.
Take the S-Bahn 7 from Alexanderplatz going towards Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and exit the train at Wannsee.
Follow the signs for buses and take the 316 bus towards Glienicker BrĂŒcke. This bus ride is about ten minutes.
Click here for larger interactive map .
Exit the bus at Glienicker BrĂŒcke station and you will find yourself directly on a large bridge called Glienicker BrĂŒcke.
(A) Glienicker BrĂŒcke
Bridge is more famously known as the Bridge of Spies.
You are currently standing in West Berlin but halfway across the bridge it becomes Eastern Germany and during the Cold War this bridge was used primarily for spy exchanges.
The first of these exchanges happened on February 10, 1962, when the Russian spy Rudolf Abel was exchanged for Francis Gary Powers, an event recently shown on the big screen in Steven Spielbergâs âBridge of Spiesâ (2015) starring Tom Hanks.
They filmed the pivotal scene right here on the bridge.
When you cross the bridge you will now be in the East. Turn right and follow the Havel river down the gravel path.
You will come to an entrance of a green garden space called the New Garden.
(B) New Garden
This is one of many UNESCO world heritage sites in Potsdam.
It was a project started in 1787 by Fredrick William II (Fredrick the Greatâs nephew) and it became one of the largest English landscape gardens in Europe.
When the path opens up into a wider meadow, look right, across the lake. This is Pfaueninsel.
(C) Pfaueninsel
Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) built for Fredrick William IIâs mistress Wilhelmine Enke with an intended sightline directly to the Marble Palace on your left, Fredrick Williamâs palace.
Continue your leisurely walk through the garden following the left path.
Take caution here especially if you are easily surprised because this stretch of the garden is reserved for one of Germanyâs favourite pastimes, nude sunbathing.
Avert your eyes or join in, but make sure you wear lots of sunscreen!
Go past the Green House (a summer home) and follow the signs to Schloss Cecilienhof.
(D) Schloss Cecilienhof
This was the last palace built by the Hohenzollern family from 1914-1917 for the crown prince Wilhelm and his wife Cecilie.
Wilhelm never ascended the throne because, in 1918, his father Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated after World War I, thereby ending the long reign of the Hohenzollern family.
The architectural design of this palace conceals the fact that it holds 176 rooms and 55 chimneys, a mark of prestige for the English Tudor style.
This palace is famous for hosting the Potsdam Conference on July 17, 1945 â August 2, 1945.
The big three (Stalin, Truman, and Churchill â later replaced by Atlee) gathered here to decide the fate of Europe after VE day.
Here they decided all the big Dâs: demilitarization, denazification, democratization, decentralization, and decartelization.
Here, they decided to divide Germany (and Berlin) into four sections, the ramifications of which are still to be seen today.
Walk around to the front of the house and see Stalinâs famous red star in the garden which was a satirical present for Churchill who was upset about meeting on the Soviet-occupied territory.
With your back to the palace walk straight and take the path on the left. Wind through the garden and soon you will see something that seems quite out of place. A giant black pyramid!
This is, in fact, the refrigerator built in 1792 to keep perishable goods fresh. On your left, you will see the Marble Palace.
(E) Marble Palace
This was the summer home of Fredrick William II built by the designers of the Brandenburg Gate Carl von Gontard and Carl Gotthard Langhans.
This palace is constructed of grey and white Silesian marble, hence its name.
Nearby on the lakeshore is the palace kitchen, built as an ancient temple ruin.
Follow the main path to pass by Egyptian entrance to the Orangery, the gardenâs greenhouse where exotic fruits were grown.
Exit the New Garden and enter the city of Potsdam. Follow Allestrasse and turn left on Friedrich-Ebert Strasse.
Walk down this main road and enter the old city of Potsdam through the Nauener Gate.
(F) Nauener Gate
It was built in 1755 in the English Gothic style and one of three remaining gates in the city.
Once you enter the gate you will be in the Dutch Quarter.
(G) Dutch Quarter
This quarter of the city consists of 130 red Dutch houses designed by Jan Bouman from 1733-1740.
When Fredrick William I (The Soldier King) needed craftsmen, he brought the Dutch to Germany and settled them in Potsdam. It is the largest Dutch architecture collection found outside of the Netherlands.
Stroll through these picturesque streets, pop in the small shops and grab a coffee and take a break. You earned it!
After resting a bit, continue down Friedrich-Ebert Strasse and turn right on Brandenburger Strasse, a large pedestrian promenade which is home to the Christmas Market in Potsdam.
Once you reach the end of the street you will encounter a massive gate that looks like a Roman triumphal arch.
(H) Brandenburg Tor
This is the other, less famous Brandenburg Tor built by Fredrick the Great in 1770 after achieving victory in the Seven Years War.
The gate has two completely different sides because each side was designed by a different architect.
Carl von Gotthard designed the city-facing side and his pupil George Christian Unger designed the outside.
Walk through the gate and through the square and take the road on the right.
This will take you to the entrance of Sanssouci, but before you enter the gardens through the large golden gates, go right through a tiny garden gate (it will look like you are entering the secret garden).
This is the entrance to the Marly Gardens and the Friedenskirche.
(I) Friedenskirche (The Church of Peace)
This was built by Fredrick Wilhelm IV in 1845. (Canât keep all these guys straight yet? Hereâs a link to the Hohenzollern family tree: https://www.preussen.de/en/family/family_tree/frederick_william_i._king_in_prussia.html ).
The Church of Peace resembles an Italian Monastery and incorporates a Venetian mosaic from San Cipriano made from Murano glass.
Fredrick Wilhelm IV is buried here with his wife but his heart lies with his parents in Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin.
When you exit the church, go right down the stairs and follow the pathway back to the gardens.
Stroll through the various species of trees and go through another small fence. Follow this path and you will soon reach the climax of the tour.
Turn right and you will see Sanssouci.
(J) Sanssouci
This is the largest UNESCO world heritage site in Germany. It was built by Fredrick the Great in 1745.
This palace was built as a spot for retreat and relaxation and so was named Sanssouci, the French for âwithout caresâ or âno worriesâ.
Fredrick the Great was such an influence on the design of this intimate palace that it is characterized as âFrederician Rococoâ.
The 120 steps up to the top of the palace are dotted with fig trees and trellised vines and the climb is rewarded with a panoramic view of Sanssouci Park.
On your right, you will see a wing filled with famous busts surrounding a grassy area with a large concrete stone. This is Fredrick the Greatâs grave.
Feel free to leave a potato here, honoring him by his other famous name âThe Potato Kingâ because he was responsible for introducing this staple into the German diet.
He was buried here in 1990 honoring his final wishes with his eleven dogs.
After being stunned by the beauty of Fredrickâs palace, donât miss out on Sanssouciâs other fantastic buildings. Stroll through the gardens and encounter the Chinese House, the Temple of Friendship, and the grand New Palace.
(K) The New Palace
The New Palace was built 20 years after Sanssouci in 1769. This larger palace was in direct contrast with the smaller Sanssouci and was intended to display Prussiaâs power and strength to the world.
This was Fredrick the Great showing off after his victory in the Seven Years War.
After exploring the grounds, you can take bus 650/695 from Sansoucci palace and head back to the center of Potsdam. If you arenât too tired, take this opportunity to explore even more that Potsdam has to offer.
Get off the bus at Alter Markt/Landtag and walk towards the giant green dome. This is the Nikolaikirche.
(L) Nikolaikirche
Built between 1830-1837, this is one of the last structures built by the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
This church was badly damaged during World War II but has since been restored. Here in the Alter Markt, you can also find the Potsdam City Palace built in 1662.
This palace was severely damaged in 1945 and demolished in 1961 by East Communists. The palace was reconstructed in 2013.
On the eastern side of the Market square, you see the imposing City Hall (Altes Rathaus) built in 1755 by Jan Bouman. Gallery
Potsdam Hauptbahnhof is a short walk across the river from here, or you can take a bus (they all go to the main train station).
Itâs easy to get back to Berlin just hop on the s-Bahn 7 going to Berlin.

1. Sanssouci Park | Top sights in Potsdam
The first attraction on every list is Sanssouci Park . The approximately 290 hectare park with its many castles of different styles is one of the most beautiful park landscapes in Germany. Sanssouci Park is therefore very high on our list and should definitely be visited, even during a short stay in Potsdam.
The park is a creation of architecture and garden art, in which world-famous garden artists have realized themselves. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, Heinrich Christian Eckstein, Peter Joseph Lenné and Gottlob Schulze were among those who worked on the construction, expansion and redesign.
In Sanssouci Park you will also find some of the most important sights of the city of Potsdam.
The highlight of every Potsdam trip is Sanssouci Palace in Sanssouci Park. The summer palace of Frederick II with the famous vineyard terraces is the main attraction and will enchant you. Take a nice photo on the stairs to the castle. If you want to see the castle from the inside, it is best to secure online tickets in advance. You can thus avoid long waiting times.
New palaces
Friedrich’s last creation – the New Palace – the Fanfaronade stands in the western part of the park and forms the end of the park there. The New Palace was built in 1763-1769 to mark the end of the Prussian Seven Years’ War. Builder for Frederick the Great included Büring, Manger and Gontard.
Another attraction of the park is the orangery or the so-called orangery castle. The orangery was built between 1851 and 1860 by Persius on behalf of Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The Italian Renaissance is reflected in the 300 m long building. The castle has a very special charm and also offers a beautiful view of the park.
Frederick the Great had the small Chinese pavilion – the Chinese tea house – built around his summer palace Sanssouci, around which life-size, gilded sandstone figures of musicians and Chinese musicians are grouped. For many, this exotic building is a special highlight of the park. There is something hidden in the park.
2. New garden with Cecilienhof Palace and the Marble Palace
After the Sanssouci Park, the New Garden is another sight that should not be missed. The 102.5 ha New Garden in the north of Potsdam borders the Holy Lake and the Jungfernsee. Friedrich Wilhelm II had a new garden created on this area from 1787. Hence the name. In the New Garden you can find some important Potsdam sights. Among other things, the Cecilienhof Palace , which was built in 1913-1917. The castle is located in the northern part of the New Garden. Other sights in the New Garden are the Gothic Library and the Marble Palace.
3. Historic Old Town with its city wall, city gates, and the Dutch Quarter in Potsdam | Top Sights in Potsdam
A visit to the historic city center should definitely be planned. There are many sights here, which are also easily accessible on foot. Worth mentioning are the Potsdam city gates that surround the city center. The Brandenburg Gate in the west is a particularly attractive photo opportunity. In addition, the Dutch Quarter , a rarity in Potsdam, is located in the city center.
Dutch quarters
The four blocks through Mittel- and Benkertstraße with the 134 red brick houses form the Dutch Quarter . The district was built between 1734 and 1740 as part of the second expansion under the direction of the Dutch architect Johann Boumann. In this well-known sight many small towns, shops and restaurants invite you to visit.
4. Krongut Bornstedt
The Krongut, which was renovated in 2002 or “Italian village” as it was called by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The Krongut Bornstedt is also one of the important Potsdam sights. It used to serve as a country residence for the Prussian nobility. The Italian architectural style of the crown estate is characteristic. There are numerous events throughout the year that invite you to visit. Even so, the Krongut Potsdam should be planned during a visit.
5. Babelsberg Park with Babelsberg Palace
On behalf of Prince Wilhelm (later Emperor Wilhelm I) and his wife Princess Augusta of Saxony-Weimar, the Babelsberg Park was created along the Havel River from 1833 onwards. Alongside the New Garden and Sanssouci Park, Babelsberg Park is one of the extensive park landscapes and attractions in the city of Potsdam. Since 1990, it has also been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to Babelsberg Palace , the Flatow Tower, and other points of interest.
6. Old market
The Old Market in Potsdam’s city center houses some of Potsdam’s sights. With the reconstruction of the City Palace and the Barberini Museum, the Old Market has become the focus again. In addition to these two sights, you will also find the Old Town Hall, the Potsdam Museum and the Nikolaikirche.
7. Barberini Palace
From 2013 to the end of 2016, the Barberini Palace , which had been destroyed in the war, was largely restored to its original appearance as the “ Museum Barberini ” art house. Potsdam has got back a wonderful sight.
The Barberini Palace was originally built under the designs of Carl von Gontard under the Prussian King Friedrich II from 1771 to 1772 as a classicist-baroque town house. The aim was to give the old market the appearance of a Roman square. Today you can visit changing art exhibitions in the Museum Barberini. You can find out more about the program here.
8. Potsdam City Palace
The original Potsdam City Palace was largely built until 1752 according to plans by the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff with the cooperation of the owner Friedrich II. It was the most important building in the city center of Potsdam until it was destroyed in the city center. The external reconstruction was inaugurated in 2014 as the seat of the Brandenburg state parliament. The very simple, functional interior was designed by Peter Kulka. Be sure to visit the Potsdam City Palace with the famous Fortuna portal.
9. Babelsberg Film Park
The seasonal amusement park “ Filmpark Babelsberg ” is located in the Babelsberg district of Potsdam. The theme park has over 20 film-specific attractions, four shows, a 4D and XD cinema, original backdrops and exhibition areas on film and film craft. A nice visit and great attraction for young and old. Among other things, there was also the Harry Potter exhibition here. Allow enough time for this.
10. Churches in Potsdam: Top sights in Potsdam
The Potsdam churches are also countless sights of the city. They can all be easily linked on foot to a tour of the city center.
The classicistic Nikolaikirche, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was built in 1830/1837 instead of the baroque church that burned down in 1795. It stands on the Old Market in Potsdam, next to the Old Town Hall and the Potsdam City Palace and is one of the landmarks of Potsdam. The tower tour offers a great view of the city of Potsdam.
Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul
The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul at the end of Brandenburger Straße (east). It was completed in 1870 and served both the Potsdam parish (which today belongs to the Archdiocese of Berlin) and the Catholic soldiers stationed in the city. It has had the status of a provost church since 1992. The Dutch Quarter is right next to the church. Combine both sights when you visit.
Garrison Church
The garrison church or court church of Potsdam, built between 1730 and 1735, was an evangelical church in the center of Potsdam. With its almost 90 meter high tower, it was not only the tallest building in the city but also a landmark that was visible from afar. The church is considered a major work of baroque church architecture in Central Europe. It has been rebuilt since 2017. The tower is currently being built, making it one of the city’s most visible sights.
11. Lindstedt Castle
Lindstedt Castle was built under Friedrich Wilhelm IV between 1858 and 1861. It was created according to drawings by Friedrich Wilhelm IV. By Ludwig Persius, Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse, August Stüler and Ferdinand von Arnheim. It was to serve as a retirement home. Today the asymmetrical villa construction is used for events (e.g. weddings).

One Day in Potsdam Itinerary (Day Trip from Berlin)
- Milena Yordanova
- August 22, 2024
A complete 1-day itinerary for a Potsdam day trip (+ a map with all key sights, how to skip the lines at Sanssouci Palace and how to get to Potsdam from Berlin).
Situated on the River Havel, Potsdam is only a 30-minute train ride from Berlin. This makes it an ideal day trip from Germanyâs capital city. Potsdam is famous for its royal palaces and gardens. The city also hosted the Potsdam Conference, where the Allied leaders met to decide the post-World War II order.
Potsdam was the residence of the Prussian kings and German emperors until 1918. It all started in 1660 when the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg chose the city as his hunting residence. Later under Frederick II (Frederick the Great), Potsdam became the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia . Today Potsdam is a vibrant city, packed with history, culture, stunning palaces, and architecture.
Best 1-day Potsdam day trip itinerary
This one-day itinerary for Potsdam is perfect for anyone planning a day trip from Berlin . In fact, it’s the exact route I followed on my last visit. I planned the itinerary in such a way that you can see most of the city with minimal walking. However, note that Sanssouci Park is huge, so this itinerary still involves a fair amount of walking.
One-day trip to Potsdam from Berlin
- Visit the Neues Palais, a Baroque masterpiece
- Explore Sanssouci Park
- Tour the stunning Sanssouci Palace
Lunch at Theaterklause Potsdam
- See the Brandenburg Gate
- Explore the Dutch quarter
You can easily make this day trip on your own or choose a guided tour . If you prefer not to deal with all the logistics or have limited time, I recommend the Sanssouci Palace Guided Tour from Berlin . It covers all the cityâs main attractions, with admission to Sanssouci Palace included.
Tips on your 1-day Potsdam itinerary
Donât stay overnight – Potsdam is just a 30-minute train ride away from Berlin. Even if you can’t see everything you want in one day, you can easily come back the following day. You’ll spend less time travelling compared to changing hotels.
Still, if you want to stay overnight, Iâd recommend Hotel Villa Monte Vino . It’s a charming boutique hotel housed in a historic 19th-century tower villa, less than a 5-minute walk from Sanssouci Palace.
Map â find here a map of this Potsdam day trip itinerary (with all attractions and restaurantsâ websites).
Potsdam Day Trip Itinerary
There aren’t many cafĂ©s along the route to the palace. That’s why I recommend having an early breakfast in Berlin before heading to Potsdam. Additionally, it’s best to arrive as early as possible since you need to book a timed entry for your visit, even if you purchase tickets online in advance.
The New Palace
10:00 AM â 11:00 AM
Most tourists begin their visit to Potsdam with the famous Sanssouci Palace, but Iâd recommend starting with the New Palace instead. Arrive at Bahnhof Potsdam Park Sanssouci station (instead of Potsdam Hauptbahnhof), which is closer to the New Palace. This way, you can start with the New Palace and make your way through the gardens to Sanssouci Palace and the city centre .
New Palace (Neues Palais) is one of the most impressive Prussian Baroque palaces in Germany . It was built between 1763 and 1769 under the reign of King Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great). Unlike other palaces built as royal residences, the New Palace was designed to demonstrate the strength and wealth of Prussia. Indeed, it mainly served as a guesthouse for visiting dignitaries and hosted grand state occasions.
With over 200 rooms , the New Palace stands as one of Germany’s largest palaces. Among its most spectacular rooms are the Marble Hall, the Grotto Hall (decorated with shells and semi-precious stones) and the Upper Gallery .
Right across the palace, youâll find the Communs. This is where the royal kitchens and servants’ rooms were.
To visit the palace, you must purchase a timed entry ticket, which you cannot buy online (unlike Sanssouci). In fact, you can buy a ticket online, but selecting a time slot is only possible in person at the ticket office. This is why I recommend visiting the New Palace before Sanssouci . Additionally, note that the ticket office is approximately 300 meters from the palace entrance. Therefore, head directly to the palace after purchasing your tickets to avoid missing your designated time slot.
I’ve visited many European palaces, but the New Palace was one of the most stunning I’ve ever seen! That’s why Iâd recommend skipping Sanssouci and visiting the New Palace (Neues Palais) if you only have time for one palace. While Sanssouci Palace is more popular, it pales in comparison to the grandeur of the New Palace in my opinion.
If you plan to visit both Sanssouci and New Palaces, buy the Sanssouci+ pass . It grants you free entry to all palaces in Potsdam for one day . Plus, the price of the Sanssouci+ pass is cheaper than buying individual tickets. Keep in mind, that even if you buy in advance the Sanssouci+ pass, you still need to visit the ticket office at the New Palace to reserve a time slot for your visit. Make sure to do this promptly upon arriving at the palace grounds.
Sanssouci Park
11:00 AM â 11:50 AM
Explore the beautiful Sanssouci Park on your way to Sanssouci Palace. With more than 70km (about 43 miles) of walkways, it is the largest park in Brandenburg . So make sure to wear comfortable shoes for your visit.
Besides Sanssouci Palace and the New Palace, Sanssouci Park is home to several smaller palaces and buildings . The most impressive in my opinion are the Orangery Palace, the Chinese House and the New Chambers. You can visit them for free with the Sanssouci+ pass.
The Orangery Palace is a gorgeous building in the Italian Renaissance style . It was built after the image of the Villa Medici in Rome and the Uffizi in Florence.
The Chinese House is a small garden pavilion , built by Frederick the Great to adorn his flower and vegetable garden.
The New Chambers is an extension of Sanssouci Palace . Initially, they served as an orangery to keep the terracesâ potted plants safe during the cold winter months. Later, the chambers were transformed into a gallery.
The Sanssouci+ pass also grants access to Charlottenhof Palace, Belvedere on Klausberg, and the Roman Baths . Realistically, it’s not possible to visit all these attractions in just one day, so prioritize based on your interests and available time.
Sanssouci Palace
11:50 AM – 12:30 PM
Sanssouci Palace is one of the most renowned palaces in Germany. It is famous for its Rococo architecture and beautiful terraced gardens . The palace was constructed between 1745 â1747, during the reign of King Frederick the Great. It served as his summer residence , where he could escape from the pomp and ceremony of the Berlin court life. The palaceâs name, Sanssouci, reflects this â it means “without a care” in French.
Booking in advance is recommended (tickets are timed-entry and often sold out) Entry ticket : Skip-the-line Sanssouci Palace
As I already mentioned earlier, this ticket grants you entry to all palaces in Potsdam. So, be sure to make the most of it! Also note, that Sanssouci Palace is closed on Mondays, while the New Palace – on Tuesdays .
Despite its modest size, I found the Sanssouci Palace charming and its lavishly decorated rooms truly impressed me.
12:45 PM – 01:45 PM
For lunch, make your way to Theaterklause Potsdam . This charming restaurant and wine bar features a fantastic lunch menu that changes daily .
Brandenburg Gate
02:00 PM – 02:10 PM
Situated in the heart of the city centre, the Brandenburg Gate is one of Potsdam’s iconic landmarks . The gate was originally a part of the city walls of Potsdam and served as one of the main entrances to the city. In 1770, it underwent a complete reconstruction under Frederick the Great. The gate was transformed into a triumphal arch to commemorate Prussia’s triumph in the Seven Years’ War .
An interesting fact is that despite being less famous than its Berlin counterpart, the Brandenburg Gate in Potsdam is older than the one in Berlin .
The Dutch Quarter
02:30 PM – 03:00 PM
Potsdam has a unique Dutch Quarter (HollÀndisches Viertel). It was built between 1733 and 1742 under the rule of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Its aim was to attract skilled artisans from the Netherlands to settle in Potsdam. The quarter consists of four blocks with a total of 134 red-brick houses in Dutch style.
Today, the Dutch Quarter is famous for its picturesque streets , small boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Itâs one of the cityâs most charming quarters in my opinion.
While you’re in the area, be sure to visit CafĂ© Guam . They offer fantastic cheesecakes , and there are always numerous flavours to choose from. It’s a perfect place to unwind and relax after a day of exploring.
More ideas for one day in Potsdam
Take a palace tour by boat.
Experience the beauty of Potsdam and its palaces with the Palace Tour by Boat . Glide along the Havel River, passing the grand palaces and parks of the Hohenzollern Dynasty. Admire the beautiful Babelsberg Palace, Pfaueninsel Palace, and the historic Glienicke Bridge.
Cecilienhof Palace and the Potsdam Conference
Built between 1914 and 1917, the Cecilienhof Palace was the last palace constructed of the House of Hohenzollern. It serves as the residence for Crown Prince Wilhelm and his wife, Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . The palace was designed in the style of an English Tudor manor , featuring half-timbered walls and brick chimneys.
Cecilienhof Palace is most famous for hosting the Potsdam Conference in 1945. The leaders of the Allied powers (Truman, Churchill and Stalin) met here to discuss the future of Europe and shape the post-war world order.
You can tour the historic rooms, including the room where the Potsdam Conference took place. The Sanssouci+ pass gives you free entry to the palace .
St. Nicholasâ Church
Built between 1830 to 1837, St. Nicholasâ Church (Nikolaikirche) is the largest and most important church in Potsdam . Standing at a height of 78 meters (256 feet), its dome dominates the historic Old Market Square. The four corners of the building are crowned with towers, each topped with an angel.
You can visit the church to admire its stunning dome and climb one of the towers . After 223 steps, you’ll reach a 42-meter (138-foot) high platform, offering a 360-degree view of the city .
If you visit between 11:15 AM and noon, you might be lucky enough to hear the impressive organ being played. There are also regular concerts almost every Sunday at 6 PM ( check the concert program here ).
Church of Peace
Located within the grounds of Sanssouci Park, the Church of Peace (Friedenskirche) is an ideal stop on your way to the historical centre. It served as a private chapel for the royal family during the 19th century . Friedenskirche was commissioned by King Frederick William IV and built between 1845 and 1848.
The churchâs design is inspired by Italian Romanesque architecture, particularly the Basilica di San Clemente in Rome. Make sure to check out the apse, decorated with an original 13th-century Venetian mosaic .
Babelsberg Palace
Babelsberg Palace is a stunning example of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture . Built in 1835 it served as a summer residence for Prince William (later Emperor William I) and his wife, Princess Augusta. The palace features a beautiful English garden with lovely river views .
Although Babelsberg Palace is not open to visitors, you can access its gardens free of charge.
What to see next
Continue your journey to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. For more details, check out my 3-day Berlin itinerary . It includes all the key sights, tips for avoiding long lines, and my favourite German restaurants.
Must buy tickets in advance
Sanssouci Palace â itâs the most popular sight in Potsdam and the tickets are timed entry. Even if youâre travelling outside the season, book in advance your skip-the-line Sanssouci Palace here .
Getting around in Potsdam
Since the attractions are spread out, be ready for a lot of walking, especially in Sanssouci Park. Remember to wear comfortable shoes!
You can also opt for the hop-on hop-off bus tour . It takes you to all points of interest, including the New Palace, Sanssouci, Cecilienhof and Glienicker BrĂŒcke (Bridge of Spies).
How to get to Potsdam from Berlin
Organized tour
To visit Potsdam as a part of a guided tour, take this Sanssouci Palace Tour from Berlin (itâs the most popular one). The tour includes a bus transfer directly from the Berlin city centre, a guided tour of Potsdam and a tour of Sanssouci Palace.
Potsdam is an easy day trip from Berlin , just a 30-minute ride on the S-Bahn. To get there, hop on the S7 S-Bahn train or the RE1 and RB23 trains. The S7 train stops at Potsdam Central Station (Potsdam Hbf), while the RE1 train stops at Park Sanssouci Station (Park Sanssouci Bhf).
To follow my Potsdam itinerary, take the RE1 or RB23 train to Potsdam in the morning, and return to Berlin on the S7 train. This way, you can start your day at the New Palace, explore the park, and finish in the historic city centre.
Potsdam is located in zone C, so the regular Berlin zone AB ticket is not enough. Youâll need to buy an ABC ticket. If you plan to use public transport in Potsdam or Berlin, consider buying a Tageskarte Berlin ABC (day ABC ticket) to save money.
Best time to visit Potsdam
A day trip to Potsdam involves a lot of walking, and one of the main attractions is Sanssouci Park, which is best enjoyed in nice weather. Therefore, the ideal time to visit Potsdam is from May to October. Additionally, many of the smaller palaces in the park close during the winter months (see all opening hours of the palaces here ).
During my first visit on a cold December day, I couldn’t reach the New Palace due to heavy snow, and the terraced gardens of Sanssouci Palace were not particularly appealing in winter.
Also, keep in mind that Sanssouci Palace is closed on Mondays, and the New Palace is closed on Tuesdays. So, I’d recommend visiting Potsdam from Wednesday to Sunday.
Faqs about visiting Potsdam
No, Potsdam is not in Berlin. It is a separate city located just southwest of Berlin, about a 30-minute ride on the S-Bahn. Potsdam is the capital of the state of Brandenburg, while Berlin is a separate city-state.
To get to Potsdam from Berlin, take the S7 S-Bahn train or the RE1 and RB23 regional trains. The S7 train stops at Potsdam Central Station (Potsdam Hbf), while the RE1 and RB23 trains also stop at Park Sanssouci Station (Park Sanssouci Bhf).
Potsdam is approximately 30 kilometres (about 19 miles) southwest of Berlin. The journey by train typically takes around 30-40 minutes.
Potsdam is famous for its historic palaces and gardens, particularly Sanssouci Palace, which was Frederick the Great’s summer residence. The city is also known for its beautiful parks, such as the Sanssouci Park, and the historic Glienicke Bridge, which was a notable Cold War crossing point.
Yes, Potsdam is definitely worth visiting for its stunning palaces and gardens, particularly Sanssouci Palace and its park. Situated just 30 minutes away by train, Potsdam is an ideal day trip from Berlin.
One day in Potsdam is enough to see the main highlights, such as Sanssouci Palace, Neues Palais and the historic city centre. In fact, Potsdam is a perfect choice for a day trip from Berlin.

About the author
Now it’s the 24th of November and we just visited the Neue Palace. The tour was nice, however short. But it was long enough to get a nice glimps. We followed your instructions to walk through the park towards the city center. Very nice. Then went along the Branderburger Tor and the main street towards the Dutch houses. There we had a nice lunch at Poffertjes en Pannenkoeken. Typical Dutch delights. Mittelstrasse 32, Potsdam.
I’m glad you enjoyed Potsdam, MariĂ«lle. đ
Thank you Milena so much ! for the information. I will follow your itinerary on our upcoming trip. but we would like to deviate and go to Schloss Cecilienhof after the tour at Sanssouci Palace, then after that probably head back to Berlin. How would you suggest we get around to Schloss Cecilienhof after Sanssouci ?
You can take bus 603 from the Rathaus (1.6km walk from the palace) and get off at Schloss Cecilienhof bus station (or tram 91 or 94 from Luisenplatz-SĂŒd/Park Sanssouci to Platz der Einheit/West and then change to bus 603 again). Unfortunately, there is no direct line which connects both sights.
Greetings. Thanks for all the precious information. Getting to the New Palace first from the Park Sanssouci train station is perfect. FYI, in the website the park opens at 09:00, but the Palaces open at 10:00. Between the New and Sanssouci, there is a 20-30 minutes walk, so plan adequately. About 45 minutes to visit each Palace. Walk to town is 15 minutes. Loved the old town and small boutique and shop. Thanks again.
Thank you for your comment and the helpful info! đ
Good morning. What is best way to get to the âBridge of Spiesâ ? Also if time is limited and you had to choose between walking around Potsdam city center or Sansouci which would you suggest? Thank you
Iâd recommend visiting Sansouci, as itâs really beautiful palace with a lot of history. The easiest way to get to the Bridge of Spies (Glienicker BrĂŒcke) is by taking tram 93 (15min journey) from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (the central train station). It will take you directly to the bridge.
Iâd recommend visiting Sansouci first, as you need a timed-entry ticket booked in advance, then Glienicker BrĂŒcke. However to get from Sansouci to Glienicker BrĂŒcke you have two options: either take two trams (or buses), or walk for about 30 minutes to the city centre and then catch tram 93 from Alter Markt/Landtag.
