Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) consists of 2 terminals that are located around 3 miles apart from each other by road and are not connected via any walkways. To travel between terminals, passengers must ride the light rail transit service that stops at both terminals on the METRO Blue Line.

The journey between the terminals is free, but passengers also have the option to ride the Blue Line north or south for onward travel at an additional cost.

Terminal 1 is the larger of the 2 terminals with the majority of flight operations and airport facilities. Some ground transportation services only depart from Terminal 1 (see the section below “Travel To and From MSP” for more details).

Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport Terminal 1

Terminal 1 has 7 concourses — A, B, C, D, E, F, and G — from where all flights depart from. The terminal is located at the northwest end of the airport with the concourses surrounding the road system and parking garages.

Concourses A and B are situated at the southeast end, Concourse C extends the length of 1 side, Concourses D, E, and F are along the top of the north end, and Concourse G extends halfway down the other side.

Check-in is at the north end of the terminal, either on level 2 for most airlines or level T for Delta. Level T also has an underground tram that transports passengers to the Skyway security checkpoint.

Passengers departing from the concourses at the top end can pass through 2 security checkpoints at the north and south points of the main terminal area.

Concourse  A

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse A

Concourse A is at the southeast end of the Terminal 1 area and has 13 gates numbered A2 to A14. Moving walkways extend almost the full length of the concourse, and there are a few shops and restaurants.

Passengers can also visit the shops and restaurants located in Concourse C and then travel to Concourse A via the moving walkways or by riding the underground tram that stops opposite gate C27 on level T.

Concourse B

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse B

Concourse B is a satellite concourse located at the south end of the Terminal 1 area. Concourse B has 16 gates numbered B1 to B16 and is accessible by walking along the underground walkway from Concourse C. Access to the walkway is near gate C27 on level T.

There are no concessions in the satellite concourse, so passengers can make use of the shops and restaurants in Concourse C before walking to Concourse B.

Concourse C

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse C

Concourse C is the longest concourse stretching from the north to south ends of the Terminal 1 area. Concourse C has 27 gates numbered C1 to C27.

Concourse C has lots of shops and restaurants and a Delta Sky Club . Although there are moving walkways along almost all of Concourse C, there is also an underground tram that runs the full length, with stations at both ends and in the middle.

Concourse D

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse D

Concourse D is a small concourse consisting of just 6 gates numbered D1 to D6. Concourse D is located in the northeast corner of the Terminal 1 area just after the north security checkpoint.

There are a few shops and restaurants at the entrance of the concourse, including a McDonald’s.

Concourse E

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse E

Concourse E is located at the north end of Terminal 1 and consists of 16 gates numbered E1 to E16.

The north security checkpoint is directly opposite Concourse E, and the MSP Mall is located just outside, in between Concourses E and F. Concourse E itself has several shops and restaurants and a United Club . On the mezzanine level just outside of the concourse is the Escape Lounge .

Concourse F

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse F

Concourse F is also positioned at the north end of the Terminal 1 area opposite the south security checkpoint. The concourse has 16 gates numbered F1 to F16 and a Delta Sky Club located at the entrance of the concourse.

There are many shops and restaurants located inside the concourse with more situated just outside the entrance.

Concourse G

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Concourse G

Concourse G is on the opposite side of the terminal to Concourses A, B, and C. It runs down half the length of the terminal area and has 20 gates numbered G1 to G5, G6A, G6B, G9 to G15, and G17 to G22.

Moving walkways run the full length of the departure gates, and passengers can pass through the south security checkpoint or the checkpoint near the transit center, depending on their departure gate.

Terminal 1 Arrivals

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Terminal 1 Arrivals

Arrivals is located on level 1 of Terminal 1 where baggage claim is located and you’ll have access to ground transportation.

Minneapolis Saint Paul International Airport Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is about 3 miles from Terminal 1 and is connected by roadway or light rail only — it’s not possible for passengers to walk between the 2 terminals.

The light rail station is located in the parking building with a walkway connecting to the terminal.

Terminal 2 has 2 security checkpoints that lead through to Concourse H, where there are 15 gates numbered H1 to H6, H7A, and H7 to H14.

Level 1 — Ticketing/Baggage Claim

Terminal 2 Ticketing and baggage at Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport

Ticketing and baggage claim is located on level 1, along with car rental services and access to ground transportation.

Inter-terminal Transport

Traveling outside of the secure area.

MSP has multiple train/tram systems for transporting passengers around the airport.

Light Rail Transit (LRT)

The LRT connects Terminals 1 and 2 and operates outside of the secure area from below the transit center in Terminal 1 to the transit center attached to the terminal parking building at Terminal 2.

The LRT journey between the 2 terminals is free of charge, however, the line continues from both terminals outside of the airport area, which is subject to a fee.

In Terminal 1, passengers looking to avoid the long walk in Concourse C can choose to ride the tram that runs the full length of the concourse. The tram can also be used to travel to Concourses A and B with stations located near gates C1, C12, and C27.

Another tram also runs from the main terminal building on level T to the transit center to ride the LRT for terminal connections.

This tram can also be used to travel to the security checkpoint located at the southern end of Terminal 1, for access to the higher-numbered gates of Concourses C and G and Concourses A and B.

Traveling Inside the Secure Area

Once you clear 1 of 3 security checkpoints, you can walk freely between any of the concourses in Terminal 1. The secure area is a large loop around the parking facilities, with 1 side longer than the other for Concourses A, B, and C.

Concourses A, C, and G have moving walkways, while Concourses B, D, E, and F do not (but these are the shorter concourses). It’s not possible to walk between Terminals 1 and 2 — passengers must ride the LRT.

MSP has 7 security checkpoints across its 2 terminals:

  • North checkpoint: Opens by 4 a.m. Closing time undisclosed
  • South checkpoint: Opens by 4 a.m. Closing time undisclosed
  • Skyway checkpoint: Temporarily closed
  • Hotel checkpoint: Temporarily closed
  • Concourse G checkpoint (for international connecting passengers only): Operating times undisclosed
  • Security checkpoint 1: 4 a.m. to last scheduled departure
  • Security checkpoint 2: Open only during peak travel periods

Live security wait times for MSP are available to view on the airport’s security page.

Most international flights arrive and depart from Terminal 1; passengers are required to clear Immigration and Customs on arrival.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck is available at the north and south security checkpoints of Terminal 1 and the Terminal 2 security checkpoint 1, open from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

MSP has a TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center located in Concourse C of Terminal 1, near gate C21. Passengers can apply online and arrange to attend an interview at the airport. The Enrollment Center is open 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Global Entry

Global Entry is available at both terminals for pre-approved passengers arriving back into the U.S. MSP also has an Enrollment Center located in Terminal 1 on the baggage claim level for eligible passengers that need to finalize their application with an interview. The airport also participates in Enrollment on Arrival, and passengers can visit lane 13 in Terminal 1 or lane 1 in Terminal 2 for their interview.

If you’re interested in becoming a member, find out more about Priority Pass memberships as well as the best credit cards for Priority Pass access .

MSP has over 70 restaurants, cafes, and grab-and-go food options. Almost all of these eateries are located within the secure area, so passengers will need to check in and clear security to grab a bite to eat before a flight.

Some concourses don’t have many restaurants (or none at all), so passengers can check out where to eat at MSP on the airport website.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout MSP in all public areas once passengers have entered the secure area.

To connect, select “MSP Airport WiFi” or “ Boingo Hotspot ” and you will receive 4 hours of complimentary browsing . Once the timer has expired, passengers can re-connect for another 4-hour session with no limit to the number of sessions available.

These services are provided by a nonprofit organization called Airport Foundation MSP , and they have a central office at the entrance of Concourse D in Terminal 1, open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

InterContinental Minneapolis - St. Paul Airport

MSP has 1 hotel located on airport property — the Intercontinental Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. The majority of other airport hotels are located 1.6-3 miles away from the terminal buildings.

Other hotels range from 2- to 4-stars, with 5-star hotels only available in downtown Minneapolis. These are the most popular hotels close to MSP, ordered by distance from the airport.

MSP Airport Hotels — Sorted by Distance

You might be thinking that the InterContinental brand has no place as an airport hotel, but you’d be wrong! Not only is the InterContinental Minneapolis – St. Paul Airport the only hotel connected to MSP Airport, but it also features a luxury spa, thermal pool, and 3 outstanding restaurants that meet what one would expect from the InterContinental brand. Better yet, the hotel can be booked starting at 33,000 IHG points per night or using a free night certificate .

The Hyatt Regency Bloomington is not only close to the airport, but also the Mall of America for those looking to be close to the largest mall in the U.S. Guests have access to complimentary shuttle service to the Mall of America and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, along with an on-site restaurant, pool, and fitness center. The Category 2 hotel is an absolute steal at just 6,500 Hyatt points per night for off-peak dates.

The JW Marriott Minneapolis Mall of America is perfect for those looking to be close to both the airport and the Mall of America, because the JW Marriott is actually attached to the Mall of America. Guests have the convenience of being in the heart of the action while enjoying the luxury of the JW brand. With Marriott’s dynamic pricing, the points needed will largely depend on the time of year that you visit but should cost from 30,000 points per night.

Hot Tip: If you’re looking to top off your points to stay at any of these options, see our guides on the best ways to  earn more Hyatt ,  Marriott , or  Hilton points .

MSP’s 2 terminals are quite far apart from each other, so it’s important for passengers to know which terminal their airline operates from for correct drop-off and parking. That said, MSP does have transportation between the 2 terminals with frequent light rail service that is free of charge.

Connecting passengers account for 33% of MSP’s passenger traffic, so passengers must ensure they leave adequate time to connect between Terminals 1 and 2 and re-clear security, as there is no way to connect inside the secure area.

As with many U.S. airports, MSP is undergoing regular modernization and expansion projects to accommodate growth and enhance the passenger experience. These include additional departure gates, new shops and restaurants, improved roadways, and a new parking ramp.

Minneapolis/Saint Paul Airport

Voted "Best Airport in America," the (MSP) Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport is a centrally-located travel hub revered for its ease of check-in, security, and amenities.

The Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP), voted "The 5th Most Reliable Large Airport" by Peter Greenberg is the country’s 17th busiest travel hub with 34 million passengers passing through each year and 12th busiest for aircraft operations. Compared to other metro areas, only one other U.S. city serves more nonstop markets per capita. The recent arrival of Southwest Airlines offers greater affordability, and MSP’s central location offers a speedy trip (15 – 30 minutes) to the city.

The airport and its leadership have received various awards in numerous categories, including safety, fiscal management, labor relations, legal oversight, snow and ice control, concessions, airport design and development, and marketing and communications. Travelers who need to transfer from one terminal to the other use the light rail transit service. Trains operate 24 hours a day between terminals. No fare is required between airport stations. There is no pedestrian access between the buildings.

Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport ( MSP  IATA ) is the major airport of the Twin Cities region, 7 miles (11 km) south of downtown Minneapolis and 7 miles southwest of Saint Paul . It's a major hub for Delta Air Lines , and the largest and busiest airport in the nearest 6 states in the upper Midwest and Great Plains .

Delta Air Lines is the dominant airline operating at MSP, transporting around 75% of all MSP passengers. While it's not a major international gateway, the airport has a lot of destinations served nonstop, third only to Atlanta and Denver in U.S. cities with the most nonstop markets served.

The airport is divided into two completely separate buildings: the very large Terminal 1 (consisting of concourses A-G) and the small Terminal 2 (consisting only of concourse H), with most flights arriving at Terminal 1.

If you're beginning your trip at MSP, make sure you know which terminal you will depart from ; Terminal 2 is mostly used by several discount airlines, while Terminal 1 serves all others.

  • Concourse A: Delta Air Lines
  • Concourse B: Boutique Air, Delta Air Lines, Denver Air Connection
  • Concourse C: Delta Air Lines
  • Concourse D: Aer Lingus, Delta Air Lines
  • Concourse E: Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, KLM, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines
  • Concourse F: Delta Air Lines
  • Concourse G: Air France, Delta Air Lines
  • Concourse H: Condor, Frontier Airlines, Icelandair, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines

Ground transportation

By light rail.

The METRO Blue Line links the airport with Downtown Minneapolis, South Minneapolis, northeastern corner of Bloomington (including the Mall of America), and offers connections to buses to other parts of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The trains are convenient, fast, and clean. Fare is $2.00-2.50 depending on time of day. The light rail has stations at both terminals.

Route 54 buses link the airport with Downtown Saint Paul, West 7th Street, and the Mall of America in Bloomington. The bus only stops at Terminal 1; passengers flying into or out of Terminal 2 can use the METRO Blue Line to complete their journey.

Terminal 1 is off Minnesota Highway 5. Terminal 2 is along 34th Avenue north of Interstate 494/Highway 5.

It's rare to have to transfer between Terminals 1 and 2, as no airlines serve both. If you do, you must exit the secure area and take the METRO Blue Line; passengers that are only riding between the two terminals do not need to pay a fare and it operates 24/7. You'll then have to re-clear security in the other terminal.

Terminal 1 is very large , and there is little to speed you on your way. A tram runs along the length of Concourse C, which by itself is a staggering half-mile (0.8 km) long; this brings Concourses A, B, and C closer to the central airport mall, from which the other concourses sprout. There are some moving sidewalks as well, but otherwise you have to walk to get around, and it can be a long journey; the farthest gates are just over 1 mile (1.6 km) apart, which will take 20 minutes or more at a brisk pace, or slightly less if you can use the tram.

Eat and drink

Most of the food in Terminal 1 is concentrated in the central airport mall. While this is fairly central to most Concourses (except for far-flung Concourses A and B), it means you're unlikely to find much food near your gate, unless you order take-out and carry it to your next gate.

The lockers are equipped with fingerprint technology, so baggage can only be retrieved by the same person who rented the locker. Lockers are near gates C2, C13, and the entrance to Concourse F. There are no lockers available in Terminal 2.

The TSA checkpoint is open 5:15AM-6:45PM daily and is only for passengers without checked baggage; access from the terminal to the hotel through the skyway is open 24 hours a day, but also only for those without checked baggage. The hotel also offers shuttle service to Terminals 1 and 2. $289+ . ( updated Aug 2018 )

Many of the hotels along the I-494 corridor (especially Bloomington and Richfield to the west, but also Eagan and Mendota Heights to the east) offer free airport shuttles. Hotels in Downtown Minneapolis are easy to access via the METRO Blue Line, as are some of the hotels in northeast Bloomington directly south of the airport (east of or next to the Mall of America).

Lufthansa arrival offers a new world of options for MSP travelers

A Lufthansa 787 pulls up to a gate at MSP with a water cannon salute

Inaugural service connects Twin Cities with Frankfurt

The German airline Lufthansa launched its first-ever service from Minnesota on June 4 — a year-round route that adds a new global connection between Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and the airline’s Frankfurt (FRA) hub. The service brings residents of the Upper Midwest important new connections via Lufthansa’s route structure to Europe, Africa and Asia.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, Minn. — Germany’s national carrier, Lufthansa, launched its first-ever service from Minnesota on June 4 — a year-round route that adds an important new global connection between Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and the airline’s Frankfurt (FRA) hub in Germany.

Lufthansa becomes the 19th airline operating at MSP and the airport’s first new transatlantic carrier in more than four years. The new service launched just as summer travel season kicks off with high demand from MSP to European destinations.

The service brings residents of the Upper Midwest important new connections via Lufthansa’s route structure to Europe, Africa and Asia. Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, the largest network of airlines in the world. In 2023, Lufthansa carried 60.3 million passengers on 455,000 flights. With hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, the airline flies to more than 200 destinations in 80 countries worldwide.

“We are excited to welcome Lufthansa to MSP as our newest international airline,” said Brian Ryks, CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which owns and operates MSP. “This new service addresses growing demand for travel to Germany and other European destinations. More than 35,500 passengers are projected to travel from MSP to Germany, while nearly 365,000 are expected to fly to Europe from MSP. Lufthansa not only helps meet that demand, but also gives passengers new options for reaching other parts of the globe.”

“We are thrilled to connect the vibrant Twin Cities, and the entire state of Minnesota, with Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub, offering a direct link for Minneapolis-St. Paul residents to Lufthansa Group's extensive network across Europe and beyond,” said Dirk Janzen, Lufthansa Group’s vice president of passenger sales for the Americas . “The launch of this route serves as a main bedrock of our summer expansion plan in the United States, the most important market outside of the Group’s home markets, and we could not be happier to add more opportunities and capacity into and out of the U.S.”

The arrival of Lufthansa is the most recent success for the MAC and the GREATER MSP Regional Air Services Partnership (RASP). This partnership of more than 30 companies and the MAC formed in 2017 to enhance globally competitive air service at MSP.

“Lufthansa is an important new addition connecting the Upper Midwest business community to markets and business hubs around the world,” said MAC Chair Rick King. “This addition is due in part to the vision and collaboration of our business community. We thank all those at the MAC and our partner organizations who helped make this possible.”

Lufthansa will service the route five days a week with a 294-seat Boeing 787-9 widebody aircraft.

How early do you need to be at the Minneapolis airport for your flight?

minneapolis airport international travel

There’s much to be said about starting off on the right foot, especially when it comes to air travel. We’re here to help you prepare for the most important step in starting your trip…planning how early you need to be at the Minneapolis airport before your flight!

In general, most airports and airlines recommend arriving 2 hours before your flight’s departure for domestic flights and 3 hours for international flights.

Can you fudge these a little based on the time of year and the terminal you’ll be using? Maybe. But it will be especially important to follow these guidelines during peak travel periods.

Take a look at these top 9 considerations when planning your airport arrival.

  • Terminal size and layout
  • Domestic vs international travel
  • Checking in for your flight
  • Security line know-how
  • Solo or group travel
  • Assistance and accessibility concerns
  • Timing of travel
  • Stress tolerance
  • Getting to the airport

The Difference Between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

At the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport you will either depart from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 depending on your airline. Use this list of airlines at MSP airport below as a reference for your flight.

list of airlines at the msp airport on February 23, 2022

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are much different in size and amenities offered.

Terminal 2’s six airlines make the task of getting to your gate much simpler and shorter once you’ve gone through the security checkpoint.

There are only 14 gates on one main concourse at Terminal 2 compared to Terminal 1’s seven concourses and with a whopping 117 gates!

Both terminals feature two security checkpoints. The TSA checkpoints at Terminal 1 are open 24 hours a day while Terminal 2 often shuts one checkpoint down during lower demand times – both are closed from 10 pm to 3:30 am.

In case you end up at the wrong terminal there is a train that can connect you between terminals for free during specified hours of the day and a shuttle for those with mobility limitations.  Don’t laugh, it happens more often than you think!

Domestic versus International Travel

At MSP Airport whether you traveling domestically within the US or abroad the check-in and security process is nearly identical other than the identification needed. But don’t expect the same at other airports around the World when it’s time to return home.

Currently you don’t need to Real ID to travel by air domestically, the deadline has been moved to May 2025.

Until then, your driver’s license or government issued, approved photo ID will suffice. However, if you are traveling outside of the US you will need a passport and valid government ID.

Checking in for Your Flight

Our top tip? CHECK IN ONLINE .

This is a true-time saver and has become normal practice for even the infrequent traveler.

Next, Skip printing at home or the terminal. and USE MOBILE BOARDING PASSES.

If for some strange reason your phone malfunctions and you cannot access your digital boarding pass when you get to the airport, you can use the kiosk or the ticketing agent to print a boarding pass for you as a backup option.

Not only will digital boarding passes save you time skipping the check-in and kiosk lines, but you’ll also have less chance of losing a paper pass on your way through security. Less to fumble and forget is a traveler’s best friend.

Have luggage to check? You can still check-in online and check your bags with an agent when you arrive. You’ll want to give yourself extra time for this process, especially during peak travel times and international flights.

Getting Through Security

Security lines are the wild card at all airports. You never truly know what to expect until you step in line.

Luckily, MSP Airport has a real-time security wait time tracker on their website that you can check before you leave your home. Just know that it can change a lot from your doorstep to the arrival at the airport. A 10-minute lined spied online at home can turn into a 20-minute line when you get to the terminal.

While you can’t speed up the line or travelers in line before you, you can take steps to make your time going through security quicker.

First, make sure you are following TSA’s 3-1-1 rule.

Second, know what you need to remove from your carry-on and your pockets, as well as what needs separate bins.

instructions on getting through airport security

Finally, make it easy on yourself by wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off, taking off your overcoat while standing in line, ditching jewelry and belts for the day, and putting your keys and loose change in a carry-on. That said, we do recommend keeping your ID with you at all times.

Really have no time to wait in a security line? Make it easier to get through security lines by enrolling in TSA PreCheck or CLEAR, both trusted traveler programs.

With TSA PreCheck the physical process of security lines gets much easier. Passengers typically leave their shoes on, keep 3-1-1 compliant liquids, gels, and aerosols in their carry-on bags, keep laptops in their bag, don’t need to remove belts, and can leave on light jackets.

TSA PreCheck has a special line for travelers at the airport, which is often much shorter than the regular security line and is available at nearly all US airports. You can apply for PreCheck online at the TSA’s website .

An alternative to TSA PreCheck, CLEAR uses biometrics to verify your identity by scanning your eyes and fingerprints, reducing the identity screen process. There are self-service kiosks in over 50 airports, the US/Canadian border, venues, and stadiums.

You can use PreCheck and CLEAR independently or join both programs for the biggest expediency benefits.

Solo or Group Travel

If you’re traveling with a family or group, don’t forget to pack both your patience and a little extra time to get from Point A to Point B to Point C…..you get it, it’s just going to take more time to maneuver your group through check-in and your gate.

Unless you are traveling with small children, it’s a good idea that everyone in your group is prepared as if they were flying solo, armed with their boarding passes (digital!) and identification.

minneapolis airport international travel

Assistance and Accessibility

If you need a little extra help to get to and through the airport or will be helping someone who does, allow yourself plenty of time for each step in the process.

The MSP Airport has resources for travelers with special needs and is prepared to help along the way.

In addition to the airport communications office and passenger information desk, the Travelers Assistance Program staffs information booths throughout the terminal with people that can provide extra help as needed during your time in the terminal.

Some of the assistance you can receive a the airport includes American Sign Language and other language interpreting services, help to find resources for accessibility for disabled or elderly travelers, and infant supplies in cases of urgent need.

Make your trip to the airport as easy as possible by using an airport shuttle service or private ride that can drop you off directly at the terminal’s front door rather than a designated drop-off area that required more walking to get to the main ticketing areas.

Timing of Travel

If you’re a frequent traveler (here’s looking at you, business traveler) you know the ins and outs of the airport and have probably fine-tuned your travel to spend little to no time waiting at your gate for departure. You also know that the time of day, day of the week, and seasonality of travel can have a drastic effect on lines and the boarding process.

For most leisure travelers in Minnesota, winter is the season for air travel, especially school spring breaks.

Airports will be as busy as they get and you’ll want to give yourself extra time to get to your gate for an on-time departure. If you can, avoid holidays and spring break at the airport.

Stress Tolerance

Compulsively early or chronically late? Depending on your appetite for adventure and your stress tolerance, playing a game of time roulette at the airport may not be for you. With the stakes as high as missing your flight, you’ve got a lot to gamble.

Allowing yourself plenty of time to make your way through security and to your gate affords you a little peace and some spare time to explore, shop, and get a bite to eat or a drink.

Didn’t get your morning workout routine in before leaving home? If you arrive early enough before your flight departs, MSP Airport is a great place to put in some steps.

What do you like to do when you’re waiting to board your flight?

In our opinion, you can’t go wrong with a little extra time built into your travel day to ease the mind and your stress level.

Getting to the Airport

Not only do you need to prepare for the time it will take you to get to your gate once you get to the airport, but you also have to prepare for the amount of time it will take you to get TO the airport.

There are a few options for airport transportation at MSP including on-airport parking ramps, offsite airport parking lots, rideshare (like Uber and Lyft) or taxi, and asking someone to take you.

Here are some details for each option.

Airport parking ramps

Obviously this is the closest MSP parking option to the airport. You’ll pay a premium for parking rates of $30 per day at the main terminal as of 2023.

Be aware, depending on how full the ramps are you may spend a fair amount of time circling for a spot to park and/or walking to the terminal from your parking spot once you find one. MSP has a parking availability real-time report on their website to help with planning.

Offsite airport parking lots

Four offsite parking options serve the Minneapolis airport, all within seven miles of the terminals.

Each provides an airport shuttle that transports you from their lot to the airport terminal and runs 24/7 for your convenience. You’ll save nearly 45% over parking at the airport ramp and avoid hectic and confusing airport traffic.

Plan for this parking option by allowing a little extra time based on shuttle rotation and availability.

Making a parking reservation online ahead of time will also ensure you secure a spot, especially during the busy season.

Rideshare and taxi

These options are handy if you’d prefer to be picked up and dropped off at home, live fairly close to the airport and have a travel party of three or less. Depending on the size of your party, the distance from the airport, and the demand for rideshare, the rate you pay can fluctuate, making traveling within a budget more difficult.

Asking (begging) for a ride to the airport

Let’s face it… no one REALLY wants to drive you to the airport , especially at 4 am! Do your friends and family a favor and don’t ask, chances are you’ll have to return the favor.

Short layover in Minneapolis? Better grab the antacid…

Short layover in Minneapolis? Better grab the antacid…

Here’s the thing: having a short layover in Minneapolis isn’t necessarily a problem. My personal record for a connection time at the Minneapolis Saint-Paul International Airport (MSP) is 40 minutes. I’m sure there are lots of people who have done it in less time than that.

The problem is that the odd configuration of the terminals at MSP makes it hard to plan for a short layover. Without knowing ahead of time where your arriving and departing gates will be, there’s no telling how short of a layover will be OK.

The following are my personal time estimates (and calming words of advice) for making tight connections in Minneapolis. It’s not all bad news, but you might want to grab a bottle of antacid before reading any further…

How short is too short of a layover in Minneapolis?

Even though I just told you that I have successfully made a 40 minute layover in Minneapolis once, I will admit that I was totally stressing out over it.

If you’re flying Delta, I would say that anything under 45 minutes is too short of a layover in Minneapolis.

Yes, there’s still a good chance that you’ll make it, but the terminal that Delta operates out of at MSP (Terminal 1 – the Lindbergh Terminal) is massive. It takes quite a while to walk from one end to the other. You’re going to need to hustle if your arriving and departing flights are on the opposite ends.

If you’re flying Sun Country Airlines, Southwest, or Frontier, 40-minute connections are no problem. The terminal that those airlines operate out of (Terminal 2 -the Humphrey Terminal) is much smaller.

MSP central concourse Terminal 1

What is the minimum layover time for international flights at Minneapolis?

Again, there’s no easy answer here. International flights at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport operate out of both terminals.

Delta and all Delta partner airlines operate out of Terminal 1. Iceland Air operates out of Terminal 2. That being said, let me try to break down some time estimates for specific situations:

Connecting TO an international flight

Plan for at least an hour if you’re connecting to an international flight without having to change terminals. If you need to change terminals, you’re going to need two hours. At least.

Connecting FROM an international flight

If you’re connecting from an international flight to a domestic flight in Minneapolis, plan for a two hour layover if you don’t have to change terminals. If you do have to change terminals, three hours is best since you never know how long it’s going to take to get through the customs and immigration process.

The Minneapolis airport is very much like the Detroit airport in the sense that there are two main terminals, and international flights operate in and out of both. The reason why short layovers in Detroit are sometimes not possible is the exact reason why short layovers in Minneapolis aren’t always possible.

Don’t worry though. I’d venture to guess that 90% of the people making international flight connections in Minneapolis won’t have to change terminals.

  • If you’re flying Delta and connecting to or from a KLM, Air France, Air Canada, or Aer Lingus flight, you won’t have to change terminals.
  • If you’re flying Southwest, Sun Country, or Frontier and you’re connecting to or from an Iceland Air or Condor flight, you won’t have to change terminals.

Terminal 2 MSP Airport

The reason why short layovers are sometimes ok in Minneapolis

Have you been reaching for the antacid yet? I don’t mean to write scary things, but the fact of the matter is that short layovers in Minneapolis can be difficult in some situations.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Most of the time, if you’re flying Delta, there’s a pretty good chance that your connecting flight will be just a concourse or two away from your arriving flight.

This is the most common situation that travelers will face at the Minneapolis airport. And in this specific situation, short layovers are easy since it doesn’t take long to walk from one adjacent concourse to another in Terminal 1.

Gate G11 MSP terminal 1

You can also take advantage of the tram that runs between concourses A, B, and C. It’s hard to find though – I didn’t even know it existed until recently.

If you’re flying out of the Humphrey Terminal (Terminal 2), it’s even easier. It’s a smaller satellite building with a laid-back “regional airport” vibe which is very easy to navigate. I’ve walked from one end to the other in 7 minutes (at a brisk walking pace) before gathering content for a Sun Country Airlines review .

A brief overview of the terminal layout at Minneapolis / St Paul International Airport

There are two main terminals at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The main one (Terminal 1) is the home for Delta Air Lines. It’s one of Delta’s most important hubs – and it’s massive.

The other terminal (Terminal 2) is much smaller and nothing like Terminal 1. It consists of one main building with no separate concourses.

MSP terminal map

Note that there are several ways to move between Terminals 1 and 2. None of them are all that convenient, but just know that you do have options:

  • Take the light rail train (it’s free when moving between the two terminals). This is the train that goes between the Mall of America and Target Field, and it stops at both Terminal 1 and 2. Unfortunately, it’s not as convenient as it sounds since the platforms require a bit of walking to reach.
  • Take one of the shuttle busses that run back and forth.
  • You could probably also take a taxi, but you’ll run the risk of the driver hating your guts for life (and saying mean things about you on social media) for having to take you such a short distance.

Travel time between all terminals at MSP

As you’ve read so far, the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is complicated. If you’re not familiar with the layout, it might seem overwhelmingly massive and not easily walkable. However, once you get familiar with the airport (and how to take advantage of the tram whenever applicable), it doesn’t seem so intimidating. Here are my personal time estimates:

  • Terminal 1 Concourse B: 5 minutes
  • Terminal 1 Concourse C: 8 minutes

How long of a layover do you need in Minneapolis for a no-stress connection?

For a no stress connection, meaning that I’d have time to stop and get a bite to eat on my way to my connection gate, the time that I would want for a layover varies for each situation:

  • For a Delta to Delta (domestic) layover, 2 hours would be perfect.
  • For a Delta-to-Delta (or Delta partner airline) international flight, I’d want 3 hours.
  • For making domestic connections in the Humphrey Terminal (for example, Sun Country to Sun Country flights) 1.5 hours would be great.
  • Coming from a domestic flight and going to an international flight within the Humphrey Terminal, 2 hours is what I would want.
  • If I had to switch terminals (going from the Lindbergh to the Humphrey Terminal – or vice versa), I’d want 3 hours since I would have to take a shuttle bus and then re-clear security.

Tips for making really short layovers at Minneapolis

Listing out a series of tips that will guarantee  that your short layover in Minneapolis will be ok is difficult. It’s not as easy as telling you that a 1 hour layover is enough time in Chicago . Or that short layovers are always easy in Seattle .

The problem lies squarely on the terminal design. Most of the time, you’ll have no problem making a short connection at MSP. Other times, if you have the misfortune of having to trek the entire length of Terminal 1 (or even change terminals altogether), you’re going to need to hustle to make a connection.

  • If possible, fly the same airline. Most problems arise when having to connect to a different airline than the one you flew in on.
  • Take advantage of the tram in Terminal 1. It’s a bit hard to find, and most people don’t even know it exists, but it can save you a lot of time if you have to get from concourse A to D as quickly as humanly possible.
  • Take advantage of the concourse C/G Skyway connector to quickly move from one side of Terminal 1 to the other. It’s a basically a shortcut that’ll save you from having to walk around the entire loop of T1.
  • If your airline changes the schedule on you and gives you an uncomfortably short connection time, it’s within your rights to call them and ask them to change it . Most will do it no questions asked. Oh, and tell them that SANspotter said “hi”.

This was so helpful! I have had the luck of never experiencing a layover, and my first one is at the Minneapolis airport and from the time my plane leaves until the other departs I have an hour. Thankfully they are both terminal 1 and concourses next to each other, but I was very stressed and this made it a little less concerning. Silly question but after you get off of the plane essentially… do you re-clear security or are you free to go find your next flight?

Scott (SANspotter)

Glad you found this helpful! Having a 1 hour layover as your very first one sounds stressful for sure, but don’t worry – it’ll be easy at MSP. Since you will be arriving and departing in terminal 1, you will not need to re-clear security. Just go directly to your next flight. Have a good trip!

Hi, thanks so much for the information. Only question I still have is how does one find the light rail in terminal one? We’re on a domestic, delta flight with a 39 minute connection and neither have been through this airport before…I’m so freaked out about making the connecting flight I can’t even describe it and I’m a well seasoned traveler!

39 minutes should be OK, even without using the tram that runs up and down the length of terminal C and D. That’s the only inter-terminal tram inside of terminal 1 – but as long as you hustle, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your connection. Good luck!

I can’t thank you enough for this article! I have about 90min to get from my Delta gate to an Allegiant flight in terminal 2. That (thanks to your article) doesn’t stress me out as much as my return connection, which is 50min.

I read somewhere that I’ll have to go through security again, so that’s what I’m concerned about… given all of this info, does it sound like I’ll have enough time? Thanks again so much for your article!

Hey Abbie – yes, 50 minutes is going to be extremely tight since you will have to change terminals and go through security again. It won’t be impossible, but if the lines are long it’s likely you won’t make it. Good luck!

how long to walk from G19 to G2

It’s about 10 minutes at a normal pace (the moving walkways along the way will help to make it easier). Have a good flight!

It’s so interesting to read perspectives on what is my “local” airport. I haven’t made a connection in MSP since I lived in Duluth in the mid-1990s.

You pretty much nailed it, I’d say. Anyone switching terminals is wise to leave PLENTY of time to get through another round of security if it’s an early morning (before 9:00) flight, when most of the locals fly (often to warm-weather destinations, haha). For some reason, TSA in MSP can be extremely pokey at high-volume times. Lower-volume times, I sail right through. If you’re changing planes in the same terminal, you don’t have to worry about that of course.

If you have a few hours, check out a local restaurant. My wife and I have been known to get to MSP early just to grab a nice dinner. Red Cow, Blue Door, Republic, People’s Organic, and Ike’s are all the “real deal” — local restaurants that are pretty popular at their non-airport locations.

I’m flying to Portland tomorrow for work — at 11:05 a.m. so should be fine with TSA.

Thank you so much for this information. I’m solo travelling for the first time from UK and have a 5.5 hour at MSP layover until my connecting flight (Delta-to-Delta). Will I need to go through security when arriving at MSP and at my final destination in WI or just at my final one? Never had a connecting flight and a little nervous about what to do/where to go!

Yes, you will need to go through passport control, customs, and then security before your connecting flight. 5.5 hours is plenty of time though, so you won’t have to stress about it at all. Have a great trip!

Hi! Thanks for the informative and funny article! I am flying from Wpg to MSP with Delta, and then a 30 min layover to catch my Delta flight to Miami. Same airlines and same terminal (1) but concerned about the 30 layover time. If I run super fast, I can make it? Should I ask Delta to seat me upfront from Wpg to MSP? Thank you!!!

Hey Jas – yes, 30 minutes is definitely possible but it will be tight. You’ll clear US customs and immigration before leaving Canada, so all you’ll have to do once you arrive in Minneapolis is walk (OK, probably run) to your next gate. And yeah, having a seat near the front of your inbound aircraft will save you a lot of time. Good luck!

Thank you for this article. We just flew Delta thru Atlanta and had a nightmare time connecting flights. We ran through the airport to make the connection it was a sight! Question, we are flying Delta thru MSP at the end of the year with a 35 min layover, coming from Miami, traveling international to Seoul (ICN)on Delta too. The issue is my son is in a wheelchair and we need to board early. Do you think this is still doable or should we change our flights?

Hi Iris! A 35 minute domestic to international connection at MSP would be tight enough even without a wheelchair. I would definitely switch to a different flight if I were you. Yes, 35 minutes might be possible, but it’ll be an incredibly stressful experience for everyone involved. Good luck!

Andrea Samuels

Flying home from Fargo to RSW thru MSP 38 min connection time . Looks like my flight will arrive C gate and depart F gate Delta. Any advice not used to such a short connection time.

It’s actually not all that long of a walk between C and F. 38 minutes will be easy as long as your inbound flight is on time (or close to it). Have a good trip!

So my sister and I are traveling internationally for the first time next May. We are flying from different parts of the country and catching our international flight together out of MSP. She is flying Delta from Sacramento with a 36 minute layover in MSP. Is that enough or should she try to get a different one? I’m flying through Atlanta and have learned the terrible lesson that 45 mins isn’t enough because you’ll likely be connecting in a different terminal. Is MSP any comparison to ATL? I’ll have a 2 hour layover myself, but the trip won’t be the same if she misses our flight to London!

Definitely have her change her flight if she can! MSP is a lot less intimidating (and easier to get around) than ATL, but 36 minutes is cutting it way to close for a domestic to International connection IMHO. Even if a miracle happens and she ends up making the flight, the stress of it all won’t be worth it. Have a great trip!

Planning a trip from Charlotte to Seoul (ICN) in November. Planning to book all on Delta with 2.5 hour layover on outbound flight. Coming home, it’s a 1 hour, 35 minutes between flights. On the day before Thanksgiving! What do you think?

Since it’s a connection from one Delta flight to another, I’d say that’s fine. MSP is an airport that (usually) has a smooth customs and immigration process, so you’re not likely to face any major delays. I’d do it!

Hi! I have a flight coming from YYZ to MSP and then have a connecting flight to PHX with a 1.5 hour layover in between. All flights are through delta. I will have a luggage checked. Will this be enough time to clear customs and connect to my next flight?

One and a half hours will be more than enough time. You’ll clear US customs and immigration prior to departing YYZ, so you’ll arrive at MSP just like any other domestic US flight. All Delta gates are connected behind the security checkpoint, so it will be a matter of walking from one flight to the next. Easy!

Awesome! Thanks so much for your help. It’s greatly appreciated!

Delta keeps changing our flights booked for November 19th 2022. Eight of us (4 adults, 4 kids) will be flying from Sacramento to Orlando (Disney World). We originally had a 1 ½ hour layover in MSP, but now it’s been cut down to 45 minutes (gee, thanks Drlta). I’m hoping that’s enough time to make our connection for the Orlando flight (all flights are Delta). I’d change the flights for everyone but it would now cost me about an additional $4000 to do so, so that’s not happening. Hoping our connecting gate is close to our inbound gate. I guess we see.

Hey Joe – yeah, it’s not worth changing the flights. A 45 minute connection will be fine since you’ll be flying Delta the entire way (you won’t have to worry about going through security again to reach your connecting gate). As long as you hustle you should be ok!

Hi Scott. We are flying on DL in December from LHR to ORD via MSP. We have a 4:50 layover. My question is about clearing customs. How long does it normally take? From your post it seems like we will not have to go through security again between flights.

Hi Bob. Yes, you will have to go though passport control, customs, and then security again before your connecting flight to ORD. It usually takes no more than an hour at MSP (sometimes less, sometimes more), but you’ve got nothing to worry about with a 5 hour layover.

Dörte Hauptmann

Hi, Glad I found this. I have a layover from just under two hours arriving with an international flight from Europe transferring to a national. Which means retreiving the bag, customs, immigrations, checking in the bag and trough security again. On a sunday afternoon. Both Delta, so no terminal change necessary. Would you say that is enough time?

2 hours should be plenty. You won’t have a lot of time to spare, but you shouldn’t have any issues at all getting through passport control and customs in that amount of time. Have a good trip!

Sebastian M

Hi Scott, Thanks for the information – very handy. I’ll be traveling to Amsterdam from Chicago, with a short layover (1.30 stop in MSP).

Would I have to go through Customs? Since it’s coming from a domestic (ORD) flight before I travel internationally? If so, is that sufficient time?

Hi Sebastian – yes, one hour and 30 minutes will be plenty of time to make your connection at MSP. You didn’t say, but I’ll assume that your entire itinerary (ORD-MSP-AMS) is one ticket, and that you’re flying Delta (and/or KLM). If this is the case, you won’t have to change terminals. There will be no security checks, and you will not have to go through customs prior to getting on your international flight. It’ll just be a matter of walking from one plane to the next. Have a good trip!

Hi Scott, I have a flight from AMS to MSP then MSP to IND. The layover between the international and domestic flight is 1 hour and 19 mins. Both flights on Delta, both in first. I also have TSA pre check. I will have hand luggage only. Do you think this is doable? By-the-way… brilliant website : )

Thanks Claire! Yes, 1 hour and 19 minutes will be tight, but it’s totally doable. Especially since you’ll be in first/business (meaning you’ll be one of the first passengers off the plane). TSA pre check won’t help you get through customs and immigration any faster, but it will speed things up when having to go through security to get back into the terminal. And if it makes you feel any better, I’d be comfortable with this short of a connection. Have a great trip!

Hello I have a flight from Chicago to MSP and MSP to London. and only a 55 min layover. both are from delta airlines, do I have to go through security ? can I make it?

Hi Salma – nope, all you’ll have to do is walk from one plane to the next. All Delta concourses at MSP are connected behind the security checkpoint, so it’ll be a quick and easy layover for you. 55 minutes is plenty of time!

Tricia Vincent

Hi We are flying from Orlando to London with a connecting flight at msp and a 1:06hr layover. Flying with delta. Do we have to collect our luggage and do we need go through any checks before boarding are flight to London.

Hi Tricia – nope, it’ll be just like a domestic flight. There will be no need to retrieve/recheck luggage and/or go through any additional security checks. All you’ll have to do is walk from one plane to the next (and 1:06 will be plenty of time to do it). Have a great trip!

I live in Minnesota so I am no stranger to MSP but still is helpful for other people!

Thanks Jude! Please feel free to let me know if I’ve missed anything, as MSP (and all airports) are constantly changing.

Breanna Southern

Flying Sun Country airlines from Nashville to MSP. Have a connecting flight with Sun Country from MSP to Reno. 30 minute connection time. Is this enough time to make it to the next gate? Will I need to get my bag and go back through security? Thanks!

Hi Breanna! 30 minutes is going to be really tight, but you’ll make it. Sun Country uses Terminal 2, which is the smaller of the two terminals at MSP (it actually looks and feels like a small regional airport terminal). And nope – you won’t need to collect your checked bag. They’ll transfer it to your next flight automatically. You’ll be fine!

Seth mishne

We going to be taking a flight to Seattle in a couple of weeks. On the way there we have a 1 hr and 37 min layover is that enough time to make my 2nd flight? Both flights should be in the same terminal because we are flying on delta.

That’ll be easy Seth! Even if you have to walk to the far end of the airport to reach your connecting gate, you’ll still have a lot of time left over to get a bite to eat (or shop). MSP is a big airport (and Delta dominates most of it), but it’s really easy to move through.

Susan Bourne

Hi, I have no idea what gate my flights will be. I am flying on Delta from Miami to Minneapolis with a 39 minute layover then, continuing on to Colorado Springs (also on Delta). How can I find out what gates those flights may be at? Is 39 minutes enough time (if on time) to get to all the possible Delta gates? (I’m assuming they will be in the same terminal).

Hi Susan – yes, a 39 minute connection at MSP is totally possible (and easy) if your inbound flight is on time. Chances are you won’t have to walk far to reach your connecting gate, but if you do, there are moving walkways everywhere that will help speed up the process.

Keep an eye on gate assignments using the Delta app. I also like to use the Flighty app (available for both iOS and Android), which sometimes posts gate information earlier than the airline apps do. Note that gate assignments are rarely ever posted anywhere more than 24 hours in advance though.

Totally freaking out! I am flying delta MCI to MSP then delta MSP to AMS with a 47 min layover. Is this doable?

No need to freak out when baking domestic to international connections at MSP. 🙂 47 minutes will be more than enough time – just walk to your connecting gate (there will be no security checkpoints to go through).

I have an upcoming international flight to Hualtuco, Mexico with 3 kids 2 under 2.. We are flying Delta. We are leaving from MCI TO MSP with 1 hr 35m layover and then to MSP TO Mexico city with a 2hr 35m layover then to HUX. Does this seem doable to you? Also, my return flight was changed several times, since booking with Delta – and now We are having to leave a day early, stay in Mexico city overnight because Aeromexico has changed the time of our flight out to where we will miss our connecting flight with Delta back into the states, and there are no other options for other flights that day. Is there anyway that I can get compensation for this/ anything that I can do?

Anxious to hear a reply, Thanks

Hi Kylie – sounds like you are going to have your hands full with 3 little ones! An hour and a half at MSP will be easy (even with 3 kids) – you won’t have to go through customs (or even security).

2 and a half hours at Mexico City will be easy as well. You will have to go through customs and immigration in Mexico City, but you’ll have plenty of time.

I’d definitely reach out to Delta any way you can to explain the situation. It’s worth a try – especially since it was their schedule change that screwed everything up for you. Good luck!

Hi! My husband and young son (will be traveling with a gate checked stroller) will be on delta from San to msp and msp to mci. Their layover is 50 minutes. Do you think this is enough time or should I try to rebook their flight? My husband is inexperienced with flying.

Hi Tara – 50 minutes will likely seem tight for an inexperienced traveler (especially one traveling with a small child and a stroller). That said, Delta to Delta domestic connections at MSP are extremely easy. And generally fast!

I’d say he’ll be fine as long as he’s a smart guy who can figure things out on the fly. If not, it might be a good idea to rebook with a longer layover.

Hi! I have a flight arriving from DFW to MSP connecting to GFK leaving next Saturday. I have about 1hr15min layover, the flight from Dallas historically lands in F, the Flight to Grand Forks historically leaves from A. I am “fairly” close to the front (window seat row 15) on an A320, but will have Carry on luggage. Since they close doors at 15 minutes now, really the layover is only an hour. Considering deplaning time, is that enough wiggle room with the gates being on complete opposite sides of the airport? Thanks in advance for the reply 🙂

Hi Tammy! You’ve got nothing to worry about. An hour and 15 minutes will be more than enough time – even if your connecting flight is on the opposite end of the airport. FYI, the combination of moving walkways and the inter-terminal train can whisk you from one end to the other in just minutes, so it’s a non issue.

Have a great trip!

Hello, Delta just changed our non-stop flight to one with a layover in MSP. We fly out of IND and the layover is only 52 minutes before we fly out to LAX. We are sitting somewhat near the front of the plane. Is this even enough time to stop for a restroom break and get a quick something to eat for breakfast (so long as the lines aren’t too long)? Or is this mostly enough time to quickly get to the next flight gate and board?

Hi KR – you’ll have plenty of time for both the bathroom break and food. You may not have a lot of time left over to actually consume the food, but at least you’ll be to bring it on the plane with you.

MSP may seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually an easy airport to move through quickly. Have a good flight!

Hi Scott! My partner and I are traveling to Cancun in October, and we have a connection through MSP that is 48 minutes. Both flights are Delta, but I am slightly nervous. Do you think that is enough time to be able to make the connection? We will also have checked bags; will that make it even more difficult? Hoping for a smooth travel day but I am a little bit nervous having never been to MSP before!

Hi Marissa! You’ll be fine. Having checked luggage or not won’t make a difference since it’s going to be transferred for you automatically. You won’t even have to think about it.

Also, the fact that both flights are on Delta will mean that it’s going to be a no-hassle layover. Simply walk from one gate to the next!

Hello! Thank you for the excellent article, I had fun reading it! I have a question for you: My husband and I are travelling from Montréal, Canada to Japan, with a 1h10 layover in Minneapolis. Both flights are Delta at terminal 1. Our itinerary says that we’ll have to pick up our luggage before our connecting flight. Here’s where we’re confused: will we have to go through security? If yes, is the hour and 10 minutes enough ? Thanks, Irene

You’re very welcome Irene! The good news is that the information you received is incorrect. You will not have to retrieve your luggage in Minneapolis (nor will you have to go through security again).

Simply walk from one gate to the next. MSP is a big airport, but it shouldn’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes to reach your connecting gate.

Have a great time in Japan!

I will be coming in MSP on a small Delta plane from CID, which I assume will park at a gate at T1 concourse A or B. I will be flying out on Delta to Amsterdam, which I assume will leave from T1 concourse E or F. I have a 1 hr 15 min layover. Will I have enough time? Great site, very helpful. Thanks, Larry

Hi Larry – yes, that will be more than enough time! MSP is a big airport, but it’s extremely easy to navigate (and there are plenty of moving walkways to help speed you long). Also, you won’t have to go through security do you reach your connecting gate. Have a great trip!

We are flying in next month via delta @630am into terminal 1 and flying out via suncountry @815am out of terminal 2. I just realized they are 2 separate terminals and you have to do security again. I called and messaged the airport and they both said plenty of time. Take the light rail (15m). Then go thru security again (15m at most)(he sent me a link of how long it takes to get thru in real time) , so should be plenty of time. Of course I’m still on edge and don’t want to miss the flight. Am I missing something ?

Hi Dawn – yes, the information they gave you is correct. You’ll definitely have enough time – but you won’t have much left over by the time you reach your gate in Terminal 2. I highly recommend going with carry-on luggage only if you can. Having checked luggage is going to make it very stressful. Good luck!

Hi – wondering about holiday weekends… will be flying SEA to BDL via Delta, with layover in MSP for 1 hour 3 minutes, on Sunday, July 7, end of the July 4th holiday week. Will things be crazy busy, and difficult to make the connection? Luggage will be checked. Thanks so much, Amy

You’re very welcome Amy! Yes, it is going to be a little busy, but it’s nothing to worry about. A 1 hour connection at MSP (even at the height of the busy summer travel season) will be super easy. I’ve had many tight connections at MSP during busy travel periods (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc) and it’s never been an issue. It’s a very easy airport to get around. Have a great trip!

Hi! I am trying to figure out if the layover time is too short for us (trying to save money and not go nonstop) to go from DFW to MSP with 38 minute layover then to Vancouver, BC. It seems that both flights would be Delta. WHen I look at details for the flight. Both flights say “Westjet operated by Delta”. Would we need to go through security again and is this even possible? We have a 11 year old with us but he is self sufficient and able to walk quickly with his own carry on. Can you give perspective on this? Am I too crazy to do this? (I havent bought ticket yet). Thanks!

Hi Tara! Yes, both flights will be operated by Delta – this means that you won’t have to go through security at MSP. It’ll just be a matter of walking from one gate to the next (which is fairly quick and easy despite how large of an airport it is).

I’d do it – especially if it means saving money!

So glad I found your informative site thank you! I am fully booked with Delta from Sydney, Austalia, all the way throught to Cincinnati, including my checked in bag. My international Delta flight arrives in LAX at 6.30am and I have chosen a 5hr,25m layover to give me, (an elderly lady) plenty of time to go through Customs and security etc before flying with Delta to CVG via Minneapolis. Again I have selected a 2hr,58m layover in MSP to hopefully give me time to catch some version of the transport you have shown…. I presume I will arrive in Terminal 1, but at this stage I don’t know what terminal my connecting flight to CVG will be. As a slow walker, will the layover time be enought??

Hi Gwenda – you’re very welcome! First of all, yes 5 and a half hours will be perfect at LAX. You won’t have any issues there.

The same goes for your connection at MSP. 3 hours is a lot of time – I actually recommend bringing a book (or planning on sitting down to a nice meal) because you will have a lot of time to kill.

And you are correct – all Delta flights operate in and out of Terminal 1 at MSP. There are several concourses however, so you might have a bit of a walk to reach your connecting gate to CVG. You won’t have to go through any security checkpoint though.

Much appreciated for your prompt reply!! Thank you.

Flying out of msp for spring break here are tips for travelers..

The spring break travel season will bring big crowds to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, but navigating the crush doesn't have to be a blood pressure-raising experience. Here are a few ways to get your trip off to a calmer start while getting to your flight on time.

That trip to a warmer climate might be delayed — but hopefully not canceled — as a pair of snowstorms could impact operations at the airport. Travelers should check with their airlines to keep up with their flight status. The same goes for those picking up arriving travelers.

Expect congestion on roads leading to the terminals. At Terminal 1, consider dropping off passengers on the east side/parking ramp side of the road, which runs in front of the main terminal. It's often less crowded than the road immediately adjacent to the terminal. Passengers can use a skyway to access the ticketing lobby.

When picking up arriving passengers, help reduce congestion at curbside pickup zones by waiting in the airport's cell phone lots on nearby Post Road. There are 140 spaces allowing drivers to wait until travelers have their bags and are ready for pickup.

Parking ramps will be jammed full, so "prebook, park and be on your way," the airport's website reads. Travelers can reserve a parking spot guaranteeing themselves a spot at the lowest daily rate. Bookings must be completed at least 12 hours before arriving at the airport.

On Thursday morning, the ramps connected to Terminal 1 were 80% full and Terminal 2 was 72% full, per the airport's website.

Reservations are required to use the airport's Quick Ride Ramp, an on-site value-priced lot with a shuttle taking passengers to the terminal.

Travelers made their way to Terminal 1 at MSP Airport in Bloomington on Thursday.

Transit options

Metro Transit and Minnesota Valley Transit Authority serve the MSP Airport with service most hours of the day. Uber and Lyft, taxis, and airport shuttles operate out of Level 1 of Silver Ramp, directly across from Terminal 1.

Entering security lines

Just as airlines celebrate early arrivals, passengers should follow their lead. The number of travelers passing through TSA checkpoints is up 10% in March compared to last year. The airport expects to screen 48,000 people on Thursday and Friday. The busiest day will be April 4, airport officials said.

For the shortest waits, check electronic message boards on both ends of the Terminal 1 lobby, which display how long it will take to pass through the north or south checkpoints. Travelers can use either checkpoint, but the north checkpoint has more lanes and often has shorter waits. The airport also lists wait times on its website .

In Terminal 2, passengers can skip the line and reserve a time to pass through security. There is no charge to use the airport's MSP Reserve program. Appointments are available from 3:45-8 a.m. and from noon to 4 p.m. daily, but availability is limited.

While in line

Screening can be seamless and quicker if passengers follow instructions. That includes having an ID ready for the TSA agent. Be prepared to remove electronic devices larger than a cellphone from carry-on bags. Place liquids, gels and aerosols 3.4 ounces or smaller in a plastic bag. Place larger containers in checked baggage, or they will be confiscated. See the rules here .

Travelers waited in check-in lines in Terminal 2 at MSP Airport in Bloomington on Thursday.

MSP Airport officials fret the loss of Uber, diminished Lyft service

F resh off a plane from Detroit for a business trip, Ray Bryant glanced frequently at his phone while waiting for an Uber at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport last week. When asked about the possibility of Uber leaving the Twin Cities market due to a labor dispute, his response was swift.

"That would be bad," he said.

Bryant was one of the nearly 3,000 ridesharing requests originating from Terminal 1 every day, as Uber and Lyft service have largely replaced the taxi industry at MSP since their debut eight years ago.

Those arriving and departing from MSP would be among the hardest hit in Minnesota should the San Francisco-based ridesharing service depart on May 1. Its rival Lyft has said it will continue service at the airport but wouldn't ferry customers to Minneapolis, the biggest city in the state.

The threat comes after the Minneapolis City Council adopted an ordinance earlier this month setting minimum pay requirements for rideshare drivers at an amount both Uber and Lyft say is too high. Faced with blowback, the council may now revise the ordinance, although it's unclear whether it will be to the ridesharing giants' liking.

Officials at the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which runs the airport, find the prospect of an imminent departure deeply unsettling. "Thousands of people rely on ridesharing services to and from the airport every day," said MAC Chair Rick King. "We are concerned if these services are curtailed. We are hopeful for a positive resolution."

Of the 18 million rides provided by Uber and Lyft to Minnesota passengers in 2022, more than 11 million served MSP, according to a report prepared by two economists for the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Roughly two-thirds of all metro- and statewide trips either started or ended at the airport, proving MSP was by far the preeminent destination in the state.

"Both Uber and Lyft are woven into city life like running water, electricity and Wi-Fi," said Henry Harteveldt, a San Francisco-based travel industry analyst. "We expect them to be available to us." And if they're not, "it could have a real impact on the way people view the Twin Cities."

Ironically, the airport just opened a new $1.2 million Ground Transportation Center in December. Located on the first level of the Green and Gold parking ramps of the main terminal, the new facility will accommodate double the number of ridesharing vehicles, regional and hotel shuttles, limousines, and taxis.

When MAC officials adopted new rules for ridesharing companies in 2016, the emotional public hearings pitted Uber and Lyft drivers who represented the emerging gig economy against taxi operators.

As it turned out, ridesharing firms emerged to dominate the airport transportation market. Currently, there are 6,950 Uber permits and 5,361 Lyft permits registered with the MAC, compared to 244 for taxicabs.

Ridesharing has emerged as a steady and growing source of revenue for the MAC, which collected about $9.7 million from operators last year.

If ridesharing services disappear or decline at MSP, people could park in one of nine parking ramps at both terminals. But demand fluctuates at these facilities — on Thursday as spring break began in earnest, parking ramps at Terminals 1 and 2 were more than 75% full, and the cheapest daily rate at the value parking ramp was $23.

Public transportation also serves the airport, including the Blue Line light rail, Metro Transit's Route 54 bus, and Minnesota Valley Transit Authority and Southwest Transit buses from the suburbs.

On Wednesday afternoon, before spring break travelers and a snowstorm descended on MSP, the Ground Transportation Center was busy mostly with ridesharing customers staring anxiously at phones and approaching vehicles.

If Uber leaves, "it will make it more inconvenient," said Minneapolis resident Michael Nicholls, while waiting for his ride. "Uber makes everything very convenient, although I'm a huge advocate for public transit. If they leave, we will adapt."

Here are the best and worst airports in New York City, according to a latest MarketWatch study.

Summer 2024 is here and eager New Yorkers are planning the ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

But is there one airport that surpasses the others for an easier travel experience?

It appears NYC has a tale of two airports, according to MarketWatch Guides .

The capital market company recently conducted a study analyzing flight traffic, delays, cancellations, security wait times and average fares at major hubs across the country. The results? A mixed bag for New Yorkers.

LaGuardia Airport's newly renovated Terminal B on June 10, 2020, in New York

LaGuardia Airport emerged as a shining star, clinching the No. 6 spot for hassle-free travel. With an average security wait time of just 12 minutes and about 82% of flights departing on time, LGA is a beacon of efficiency.

A recent study from AirHelp concluded the same, which shows LaGuardia ranked as one of the best airports in the United States after proving to have the lowest number of flight disruptions in May, with only two other airports ahead.

According to MarketWatch though, John F. Kennedy International Airport tells a different story. With nearly 23% of flights experiencing delays, JFK languishes at the bottom of the list, ranking dead last among major airports.

But the AirHelp study came to the conclusion that while JFK had more delays in comparison to LaGuardia, it was still a great option compared to the rest of the country.

Salt Lake City International Airport (18.6%) and Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (20.8%) were the only two other major airports that had experienced fewer flight disruptions, per AirHelp.

Meanwhile, travelers crossing the Hudson to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) are in for a rough ride, according to MarketWatch’s findings.

EWR made the dubious list of the top five least dependable US airports. With a staggering 2.8% of flights facing cancellations daily and average fares soaring above $425, passengers often find themselves clambering for other options.

And this comes as no surprise as Newark has shown a pattern of inefficiency year after year.

EWR sign is seen at the Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, United States on October 26, 2022.

In 2019, it was ranked as one of the worst airports when it comes to delayed flights and connections. In 2023, a study showed that only 64% of flights from there actually departed on time.

Overall the MarketWatch study revealed that every region had its high-flyers and turbulence zones.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport led with the shortest TSA wait time of just nine minutes but also ranked second for the percentage of canceled flights. Meanwhile, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International and Ronald Reagan Washington National impressed with their relatively short average wait times.

JFK airport has nearly 23% of flights that experiencing delays.

On the opposite end, New York’s JFK and Newark, alongside Chicago Midway International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, ranked among the bottom five, indicating more challenging experiences for travelers due to delays and cancellations.

The West Coast emerges as a traveler’s haven, with four out of the five airports boasting the lowest percentages of canceled flights. Seattle-Tacoma International and Phoenix Sky Harbor International top the reliability charts, each with a cancellation rate of just 0.7%.

In contrast, the New York and New Jersey tristate area is fraught with cancellations. Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, and John F. Kennedy International rank among the top for cancelled flights. Travelers seeking reliable connections might do well to avoid these northeastern airports.

Instead, look at the efficiency of airports like Salt Lake City, Los Angeles or Atlanta.

As you prep for your summer adventure, remember: not all airports are created equal.
