Best Places to See Canada's Fall Foliage

Nothing can match the fiery beauty of Canada's fall foliage. Warm, golden rays of sunshine shimmer on mirror-like lakes and slant through canopies of auburn, ochre and crimson leaves. The skies are bright and blue, the air is crisp and the sunsets are achingly beautiful.

Whether you're traveling through the aspen alpine meadows of the Rockies, the dense forests of Quebec's interior or the craggy coastline of Nova Scotia, Canada will enchant you in the autumn months. When you take a train ride, fall foliage surrounds you, putting you in just the right frame of mind for an outdoor adventure followed by a relaxing evening in front of the fireplace.

1. Rocky Mountains

As the needles of the larch trees turn a stunning shade of burnished brash, the alpine meadows of the Albertan Rockies come alive with colour. Gaze through the train windows at the pine-covered mountainsides, where you can see a dramatic contrast between the dark green conifers and the golden poplar and birch.

Best time for fall colours : Late September to early October

Recommended activities and tours : Ride the Banff Gondola to get a bird’s eye view of the golden larch trees in fall.

2. Niagara Region

History buffs may know the famous Winston Churchill quote calling the Niagara River Parkway the “the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world.” That is especially true in the fall of the year, when the trees in the Niagara region begin their seasonal transformation. Stunning shades of crimson, orange and gold can be seen when leaves are at peak colour. The area is also home to several wineries and orchards, making it an ideal fall getaway.

Best time for fall colours : Peak colour can happen between late September and late October.

Recommended activities and tours : Enjoy a personalized immersive experience on a private tour of the Niagara region.

Best time to see fall colours in canada.

For the best fall foliage train rides , plan to take your excursion in late September or early October. This is when the red birch and maple trees are their most vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. If you visit during late September or early October, you'll get to enjoy the contrast between the red, orange and yellow leaves and the green needles of Canada's evergreen trees.

Between late September and early October is also an ideal time to take a train tour through Canada if you'd like to avoid summer crowds and enjoy milder weather. By this time of year, summer heat waves have been replaced by mild daytime temperatures and cool nights, making early fall an ideal time to try out new hiking trails, visit one of Canada's national parks or spend the day walking through your favourite city.

In early fall, the weather conditions are ideal for boating, canoeing and fishing, making it even easier to add excursions to your fall foliage train trip. We'll take care of the planning so that all you have to think about is which activity you want to try first.

#2 Travel tip: Fall requires layers

The weather at this time of year can be quite variable. Pack layers to stay cool or warm, as required. Bring light shirts, a fleece jacket and a waterproof coat.

To waste more time and make it a 14 hour dat trip. When we finally got to the park for hiking, we'd hike for 2 mins and our guide would stop and talk for 20 mins. We hiked for a total of 20 mins. Where to See the Fall Colors in Toronto

TripSavvy / Kristjan Veski

If you can't get away from Toronto a full-blown fall foliage getaway, have no fear. Despite being a dense urban center, Toronto has plenty of green space and thus no shortage of opportunity to enjoy the fall colors, which reach their peak about mid-October. So, pack up a lunch and head to the following spots.

Toronto Islands

TripSavvy / Kristjan Veski

Toronto Islands are several islands off of downtown Toronto. Their proximity to Toronto make them a nice, convenient escape from city hustle and bustle, and in fall, gorgeous autumn foliage adds incentive to visit.

Toronto Islands boast many public facilities like fountains, picnic areas, volleyball nets and more.

Come mid-October, the ferry ride switches to winter hours and only docks at Ward's Island, so check the schedule for times. Centre Island, which is the main draw in the summer, is still open and accessible, but you will have to walk a couple of kilometers to get there. Ward's Island is residential and roaming the pretty streets and imagining the type of life people live there is a pleasant past time.

Many attractions will be closed in October, but the walk is nevertheless glorious and you will be rewarded with lovely views of the Toronto skyline. Crowds have thinned out as well.

Bluffer's Park

Bluffer’s Park (Brimley Road at the lakefront) offers nature trails, a sandy beach, a marina and other visitor facilities along the foot of the Scarborough Bluffs on the shores of Lake Ontario.

The Scarborough Bluffs, which rise 65 m above the water, have been formed primarily by erosion of the packed clay soil. At their western end at Bluffers Park, the Bluffs create a dramatic backdrop for fall foliage viewing.

Don Valley Hills and Dales

The two to three hour Don Valley Hills and Dales walk is one of Toronto's  Discovery Walks , a program of self-guided walks that link city ravines, parks gardens, beaches, and neighborhoods. Signage along the way will help you experience an area's heritage and environment.

Many of the dozen or so Discovery Walks will offer fine examples of Toronto fall colors, but the Don Valley Hills and Dales is a favorite as it exposes walkers not only to the glorious Don River Valley but also to Riverdale Farm and the Cabbagetown neighborhood, which is one of the nicest residential spots to see fall colors.

The walk is easily accessible from downtown, beginning at the Broadview Subway Station.

One of Toronto's most popular parks , High Park boasts views of Lake Ontario and Grenadier Pond and is home to a Carolinian forest, mature oaks, gardens, hiking trails, and an array of butterflies, migratory birds, and other wildlife. In addition, High Park offers many visitor facilities including a zoo, off-leash dog-park, eateries, playgrounds, and parking.

High Park is located on the west side of downtown Toronto between Lakeshore and Bloor Street West and is easily accessible by public transit.

University of Toronto Campus

The University of Toronto campus is located downtown, slightly north of the Financial District and adjacent to Yorkville and the Royal Ontario Museum.

The grounds are beautifully treed and thus a convenient spot to pop by for a fall foliage fix. In addition, the buildings are well-preserved examples of Romanesque and Gothic Revival architecture.

Get a glimpse into the university's ghostly past with a Muddy York Ghost Tour.

Where to See the Best Fall Colours in Ontario: The Ontario Parks Edition

Ontario Parks are ideal to see the colour change of leaves in the province. Below, we focus on which Ontario Parks would be ideal for you to visit in order to see the best fall colours in Ontario, and look closely at Algonquin Park, and the parks nearby.

Ontario Parks fall colours

Though autumn does signal that winter is on its way, it’s hard not to have a soft spot for autumn in Ontario because of its sheer beauty. San Diego might have the perfect weather all year round, but they don’t know what its like to see the trees bursting with bright oranges and reds that would have any painter salivating.

We’ve written about some of the most breathtaking places to see fall colours near Toronto , but today we’re going to run through where else you can and should be looking to make the most of fall in Ontario. Specifically, we’ll focus in on how to see the fall colours at Ontario Parks.

If you’re looking for a great little autumn Ontario weekend getaway , or perhaps even to take a day off during the week and to soak it all in (don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss), then this article is for you.

The Ontario Fall Colours Report

Many Ontarians don’t know that Ontario Parks Fall Colour Report actually does a brilliant job of tracking fall colours for us. You can find their interactive map if you click right here , and its diligently updated through the fall as the leaves change from green to orange, yellow and red.

On the right side, you’ll see a colour icon that is representative of each specific park and its fall leaf colour report, so you’ll know which parks are changing on which date. The colour of each region is determined by averaging all parks within that region.

If you’re wondering when is fall in Ontario, the best Ontario fall foliage is typically seen from the middle of September to the middle of October , but each year is going to be different, and that’s why we’re such a big fan of the Ontario fall colours report.

This is also a good way to discover new parks in the province. You might come across a lesser known park that has gorgeous fall colours, and decide to go and check it out. Here at Ultimate Ontario, we try to put the focus on lesser known parks where we can, and that’s why we focus on things such as Quetico Provincial Park’s Dark Sky Designation.

Where to Stay Near Ontario Parks in the Fall

We’ve outlined the best tips and provincial parks to visit in and around Algonquin Park below. If you’re planning to visit one of these provincial parks as the nights turn cooler, you may be more excited about the opportunity to stay at a heated accommodation as opposed to a tent to make a weekend out of it.

Deerhurst Resort is an excellent place to base yourself as an access point to the Muskoka Lakes region and beyond. Located in Huntsville, it’s conveniently located close to Highway 11, while still being a short drive to several of the provincial parks listed here.

Windermere House , JW Marriott The Rosseau and Miners Bay Lodge are also excellent places to stay in and around the region.

How to Get to this Region in Ontario

Since the parks in and around Algonquin Park are some of the best to see fall colours, you’ll want to ensure that you find the best way to get here.

Unfortunately there are no public transportation options to access these Ontario provincial parks. Your options are to either rent a car, or drive in your own vehicle.

There is one well-known tour company that does day-trips to Algonquin Park from Toronto. If you’d like to book a spot on an adventure tour from Toronto to see the fall foliage in Algonquin Park on a small, guided group tour that involves hiking and seeing some of the more famous natural landmarks in the park, then you can do so by clicking this link to book here .

What You Need to Know About Fall Colours at Algonquin Park

The renowned fall foliage of Algonquin Park

The most famous place to see fall colours in Ontario is undoubtedly Algonquin Park. There’s absolutely no question that it’s stunning, but it’s also as busy as can be.

We’re going to include some tips here directly from Ontario Parks to help you navigate seeing Algonquin fall colours in autumn without getting snubbed because there’s no space for you left in the park.

You can book your day-use vehicle permit up to five days in advance of your visit. We’ve detailed how to do this on our post about The Best Ontario Provincial Parks .

If you arrive from a road trip at any provincial park without booking in advance and they’ve already sold all daily vehicle permits for the day, then you’re out of luck, so make sure you book in advance.

You’ll want to make a reservation if you’re visiting for the day.

From Ontario Parks:

“We know you don’t want to spend your time driving to Ontario Parks or sitting in lines, only to be turned away because we are already full. If you’re coming for fall colours in Algonquin Park,  book the Highway 60 Algonquin access point. You can obtain a daily vehicle permit up to five days in advance of your trip, beginning at 7:00 a.m. Make your reservation: Online at  OntarioParks.com or by phone at 1-888-ONT-PARK (1-888-668-7275) – open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST Not sure how to book?  Here’s a walkthough. “

Even if you have a season permit, you’ll need to make a reservation.

They’ve noted that you’re best to come on weekdays to see the Algonquin fall foliage Ontario. You can indeed stay overnight as well if you’d like at a selection of lakes, but, again, reservations are strongly encouraged.

What Other Ontario Parks Should I Have On My Radar for Ontario Fall Colours?

Some of this will depend on your location in Ontario, as well as you using the Ontario Fall Colours Report to find the best spot, but we’ll quickly run through some other excellent spots to see Ontario fall foliage.

The list below is in no particular order, and they’re all wonderful in their own right. We’ve focused more heavily on provincial parks that are near Algonquin Park in case you’re aiming to see the fall colours at Algonquin, but then have to make some alternative plans. Most of these parks are located within a 2 hour drive of Algonquin.

Arrowhead Provincial Park

Arrowhead boats large, treed and private campsites in the heart of Muskoka Lakes. You’ll also find three sand beaches on Arrowhead Lake, which make for some lovely photography. Motorboat-free lakes, and over 15 kilometres of hiking trails, including a trail to a waterfall (Stubb’s Falls).

Restoule Provincial Park

fall colours at Restoule Provincial Park

The ancient cedars of Restoule are lovely to paddle alongside in the summer , but they’re even more stunning in the fall. If the weather is nice, consider hiking the Fire Tower Lookout Trail for an amazing view of Stormy Lake. This park is also known for mountain biking if that’s your thing!

Whether you choose to do some waterfront camping or backcountry camping, Restoule quietely offers some of the best Ontario fall colour viewing opportunities.

Silent Lake Provincial Park

Silent Lake has almost 20 kilometres of hiking trails, and to go along with that, they’ve also got 17 kilometres of mountain biking trails. Wherever you go, and however you choose to see this provincial park, note the remarkable lookout over Silent Lake. There are two sandy beaches, no motor boats, and some campsites available for walk-in camping enthusiasts.

There’s also four season accommodation at yurts and camp cabins available.

Earl Rowe Provincial Park

Earl Rowe is known for its abundance of quality hiking trails, including one that is a paved trail for those with accessibility needs. Earl Rowe Lake is a great spot for canoeing, fishing, swimming and everything in between. They’ve got a fair bit of RV and car camping for those interested in that.

Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park

Many will know that Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park is located on the historic Mattawa River, which was a fur trade route in the scenic Mattawa Valley. This park is known province wide for its fall colours, and hiking trails which give vantage points of the colours. It’s also a fantastic place to explore via canoe, which is part of the reason the Voyageur Adventure Interpretive Experience is headquartered here.

Mikisew Provincial Park

autumn colours at Mikisew Provincial Park

Mikisew has plenty of private campsites in mature maple and open red pine forests, which makes it a nice spot for fall foliage. If you’re fine with cold water, then you’ll be happy to know they’ve also got three shallow sandy beaches (which are popular with families in the warmer months). The hiking here will take you through hardwood forests and some picturesque ponds and wetlands.

Lake St. Peter Provincial Park

A large lake that’s ideal to explore via boat that, like Balsam, has ample fishing opportunities. Not to mention, a handful of beaches if you’re keen to take a dip (but, again, we know it may be a touch too late in the year). Lake St. Peter is located only 30 minutes from Algonquin’s East Gate, so it’s a fairly good backup if you can get into Algonquin because they’ve run out of permits for the day, but it is certainly beautiful in its own right.

Bonnechere Provincial Park

Bonnechere has a rich Ottawa valley history, but it’s got a lot more than that. They’ve got a lovely beach on the shores of Round Lake, the McNaughton Trail, a historic depot with log ranger cabins, and some rustic cabins to rent for those who are looking to see some fall colours and then spend the night.

Oxtongue River-Ragged Falls Provincial Park

Oxtongue River Ragged Falls Provincial Park is located only 5 minutes from Algonquin’s West Gate so, again, that’s worth noting if you’re unable to get into Algonquin if it’s already full. You’ll find the impressive Gravel Falls here, and it’s only a short trail from the parking lot to get to a lookout of the thundering Whitewater Falls. Many people consider the falls here to be some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Ontario.

Balsam Lake Provincial Park

Balsam Lake Provincial Park Beach during the fall

This is a spot to have on your radar if you wouldn’t mind doing some fishing while you take in the fall colours. Balsam is known for having some great Walleye, Muskellunge, as well as Large and Small Mouth Bass. There are some easy hiking opportunities here, as well as the chance to do a little boating on the Trent-Severn Waterway. Not to mention, a large sandy beach.

You may also want to know that they’ve got a fully-furnished four bedroom rental cottage available.

But the best part to check out is Grenadier Pond , which is surrounded by trees and is particularly stunning with the golden leaves reflecting in the water.

2. Evergreen Brick Works

One of the most popular spots for leaf peeping in Toronto is Evergreen Brick Works . Located in the picturesque Don Valley , this former quarry and industrial site is only 8 kilometres (5 miles) north of downtown and is one of the best spots to enjoy the outdoors in the city.

Here you will find an abandoned brick factory turned community hub, Toronto’s largest farmers’ market, and various events and performances. But what makes it so special is the surrounding gardens, forested areas and naturalized ponds, which can be explored on foot along various short hiking trails.

Autumn is a particularly magical time at Brick Works, when the landscape lights up in hues of orange, yellow and red. Plus you can get a pumpkin spice latte to warm up, explore the pumpkin patch, and buy some delicious local apples to fully immerse yourself in the fall season!

3. Crothers Woods

Another hotspot for fall colours in the Don Valley is Crothers Woods . Located just north of Evergreen Brick Works, you can even explore both areas in one day!

With 10 kilometres of multi-use trails, Crothers Woods has everything from century old trees, rare plants, various wildlife and amazing views of the city.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that this is one of the best places in Toronto to see the changing leaves. It’s also an excellent spot to snap colourful fall photos along the winding trails, or with the Toronto skyline in the backdrop.

4. Glendon Forest

If you’re willing to venture a little further north in the Don Valley, then Sunnybrook Park is definitely worth a stop. In particular, at the top end of the park you will find Glendon Forest .

This picturesque forest offers some of the most vibrant fall foliage I’ve ever seen in Toronto. It also has a short trail which takes you on a loop through the forest, so you can see it all!

While this is a beautiful forest to explore at any time of year, the canopy of gold above, and the bright hues of red and orange along the Don River make it especially enchanting during the fall.

And if that’s still not enough for one day, then head a little further north-east, to Wilket Creek . Here you will find more pristine parkland, as well as the Toronto Botanical Garden and Edwards Gardens . And luckily both gardens are free to access!

5. Trinity Bellwoods Park

As one of the most centrally located and popular parks in the city, Trinity Bellwoods is an amazing place to see fall foliage in Toronto. It’s easy to get to, has plenty of facilities and is full of bright orange and red hues at this time of year.

Plus, there are plenty of great coffee shops nearby. So you can grab a pumpkin spice latte to enjoy on your stroll through the park!

6. Rouge National Urban Park

To truly escape into nature and forget you’re in the city, Rouge National Urban Park is a must-visit.

Although a bit further away than other places on this list, Rouge Park is still within the GTA and can easily be reached by car or public transit. And it is definitely worth the trip to get there.

As one of the biggest urban parks in North America, Rouge Park is home to forests, wetlands, farmland, meadows, a beach, and multiple hiking trails. So, if you want to experience fall colours in a range of different landscapes, this is definitely the place to go. Plus there’s plenty of wildlife to be spotted here too!

Several sea birds standing on sand banks in a still lake with fall foliage lining the shore and reflecting in the water.

With hiking trails ranging from just a few hundred metres to over 10 kilometres, Rouge Park is best explored on foot. Although as it’s such a large park, driving to different points of interest to explore is also a great way to see as much as possible.

7. Humber River Recreational Trail

For a full day out exploring, leaf peeping and enjoying the mild autumn weather, the Humber River Recreational Trail is a great place to go.

This is a multi-use trail which follows the Humber River all the way from the Humber Bay Bridge on Lake Ontario up to Steeles Avenue. The trail stretches around 25 kilometres and is a beautiful trail to walk. But, I would actually recommend spending the day biking it, especially if you want to make it all the way to the top!

The fall scenery along the banks of the Humber River is particularly stunning and you will get to pass through various parks, forested areas and meadows along the way.

And there are also some great wildlife spotting opportunities on the trail. Last time I biked it we saw a Great Blue Heron fishing in the water, as well as quite a sizeable (but harmless) snake.

8. Toronto Islands

In the summer, the Toronto Islands (also known as Toronto Island Park ) are the best place to escape the city without actually leaving the city.

The three islands – Wards’s Island, Centre Island and Hanlan’s Point – are only a short 10-15 minute ferry or water taxi ride from downtown. With multiple beaches, parks and recreational facilities, there’s so much to do there.

However, once beach season ends, the islands are often overlooked for day trips, as many people don’t know that one of the best times to visit is actually in the fall!

The view of the CN Tower from the Toronto Islands, framed by yellow and red fall foliage.

During autumn, the islands are much quieter, the weather is more comfortable and the various green spaces are lit up with bright fall colours. Plus, you get beautiful views of the Toronto skyline, which are particularly spectacular when framed by the vibrant fall foliage.

9. Trillium Park

If you don’t have the time to head over to the Toronto Islands for beautiful autumn views of the Toronto skyline, then visiting Trillium Park is a must!

Located along Toronto’s waterfront, on the east side of Ontario Place, the park packs a lot into a small space. It has a 1.3 kilometre trail, colourful gardens, sedimentary rocks, a public fire pit, and a space where concerts and events are held throughout the year.

Plus, as the park faces the east, this is where you will get some of the best views of the city skyline, surrounded by native trees and plants. This is particularly special during the fall when the view is captured amidst the hues of red, orange and yellow.

10. Mount Pleasant Cemetery

Although it may seem strange to have a cemetery on the list, Mount Pleasant Cemetery is one of the most beautiful and serene places to see fall foliage in Toronto.

This cemetery is a historic site dating back to 1876. And it’s full of natural beauty, large gardens and one of North America’s most significant tree collections.

This is a great place to escape the crowds, see an impressive canopy of autumn colours and learn more about the hundreds of varieties of trees. Plus it’s a very peaceful spot to spend some time reflecting as the seasons change.

A path leading through Mount Pleasant Cemetery at the start of autumn when the colours of the leaves are starting to change.

11. David A. Balfour Park

If you plan on visiting Mount Pleasant Cemetery during the fall season, another beautiful place to stop at nearby is David A. Balfour Park .

This quiet urban park offers some of the most picturesque natural landscapes in Toronto. With various walking trails leading you through peaceful ravines, wild forest and open green spaces, it’s no wonder this is an excellent place to witness the onset of fall.

And if you’re looking for tranquility, this is definitely one place where you will find it. The David A. Balfour Park doesn’t get very busy. So you can enjoy some peace and quiet while taking in the lush natural surroundings and changing season.

12. University of Toronto St. George Campus

In addition to seeing fall colours in Toronto’s many parks and forests, there are also some great urban leaf peeping opportunities. My favourite is the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus .

Located in downtown Toronto, this picturesque campus has everything from historic buildings and award-winning architecture to beautiful tree-lined streets and peaceful green spaces.

It’s a stunning place to take a stroll. Especially in the fall when you can see red ivy-covered buildings and canopies of red and gold which add even more character to the already charming streets.

13. Glen Stewart Ravine

Toronto’s east end also has incredible places to visit in the fall. In particular, the Glen Stewart Ravine in the Beaches neighbourhood is one of the city’s most beautiful hidden forests, with some of the best fall foliage in Toronto.

Plus, exploring the ravine is made easy with a boardwalk trail that takes you right through the heart of this protected forested area. And with a thick canopy above, you will be able to take in the vibrant autumn colours from every angle.

14. Toronto Music Garden

Although it may surprise you, you don’t even have to venture outside the downtown core to experience beautiful fall foliage in Toronto!

The Harbourfront area is a beautiful place to take a stroll and enjoy the changing leaves with Lake Ontario in the backdrop. In particular, the Toronto Music Garden is a beautiful spot to witness the onset of fall. There are various paths weaving through a small forested area and manicured gardens, all inspired by Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello.

The highlight of the garden is a huge weeping willow tree at the bottom of a grass amphitheatre. This is a great spot to sit and take in the sunset, which is especially spectacular during the fall season.

15. Coronation Park

Another central spot for stunning fall scenery on Lake Ontario is Coronation Park .

Located just west of the Harbourfront area, the park has an excellent westerly view where you can take in the spectacular Toronto sunsets in the fall. Seeing the golden sunlight shining through the bright fall foliage of the park’s huge trees is a very special sight to see.

Plus the park has plenty of open space, benches along the water, walkways, picnic tables and other facilities. So it’s a great spot to spend some time relaxing and enjoying the views.

The sun setting and shining through the red and yellow trees at Coronation Park in Toronto.

16. Tommy Thompson Park

Although brightly coloured trees are the highlight of fall, the changing colours of other types of foliage is also a sight worth seeing. And there is no better place in Toronto for this than Tommy Thompson Park .

Located on the 5 kilometre-long man-made Leslie Street Spit , Tommy Thompson Park has become one of the best places near downtown Toronto to spend time outdoors. With plenty of trails, more than 300 species of birds and recreational fishing opportunities, it’s easy to immerse yourself in nature here.

The fall is a particularly beautiful time to visit Tommy Thompson, as the diverse vegetation starts to change colour and the mild temperatures provide the perfect opportunity to bike or walk the length of the park.

Although there aren’t many big trees in the park, you will get to see lots of meadows, wetlands, beachside vegetation and lots of smaller poplar trees, with the bright blue waters of Lake Ontario in the background.

17. Scarborough Bluffs

The Scarborough Bluffs are one of the most impressive natural sights to see in Toronto.

This geological wonder is due to the natural erosion of sedimentary deposits which were accumulated more than 12,000 years ago. And the result is 15 kilometres of dramatic white cliffs towering above the shores of Lake Ontario.

And to add to it’s beauty, the bluffs are connected by eleven urban parks full of forests, gardens, wetlands, meadows and beaches.

The Scarborough Bluffs covered in an array of red and orange fall foliage in Toronto.

Although the bluffs are a beautiful place at any time of year, they’re definitely worth visiting in autumn. The changing colours of the varied vegetation, combined with the breathtaking cliffs, creates some of the most scenic fall views in all of Toronto!

Final Thoughts – Fall Foliage in Toronto

As a city full of recreational spaces, urban parks, hidden forests and tree-lined streets, you’re almost guaranteed to see some beautiful fall foliage in Toronto.

But if you want to experience the absolute best of fall in the city, then hopefully this list has helped to point you in the right direction!

fall foliage toronto

The top 10 places to see fall foliage in Toronto

Latest Videos

Fall foliage in Toronto is one of the saving graces of the season before winter. This October the city's parks and ravines are set ablaze with saturated yellows, oranges and even a few reds before the starkness of November makes everybody depressed. It's a wonderful time of year to explore this city.

Here are my picks for awesome spots to see fall foliage in Toronto.

The Don Valley

There's no better place to take in fall colours in the city than the Don Valley ravine system, which extends further north than most people realize. Crothers Woods and the Brick Works are top spots, but so too are Taylor Creek, Sunnybrook Park, Edwards Gardens, and the East Don Parkland. Peak colour usually takes place just after Thanksgiving.

Glen Stewart Ravine

One of the best places to take a walk in the entire city, Glen Stewart ravine explodes with colour in mid October. The walking trail that cuts through the heart of the park places you directly under the tree canopy so that you feel as if you're at the centre of an explosion.

Moore Park Ravine

Starting at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in the north and heading southeast down to the Don Valley Brick Works, Moore Park Ravine follows the almost vanished Mud Creek. It's not one of Toronto deepest ravines, but the hard-packed trail is perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride.

Necropolis Cemetery

Nestled in the Rosedale Ravine, the Necropolis Cemetery is seems like a world away from the rest of the city, even as you can occasionally catch a glimpse of the apartment towers of St. James Town. Harolding isn't for everyone, but there's no better time or place to contemplate one's finitude than a cemetery in fall.

You can hike the many trails that meander around the ravine walls, but this is also an area that's good to drive around in a car. Head to Old Finch Avenue and drive around the Toronto zoo. The scenery is so rural you won't believe you're still in Toronto.

Scarborough Bluffs

The Scarborough Bluffs are beautiful no matter what time of the year it is, but something extra special happens when the trees turn colour here. The combination of bright leaves and an azure Lake Ontario looks like a Group of Seven painting. Head to the beach or hike the trails that line the top of the bluffs.

Humber Valley

The Humber River has a slew of parks that line its banks from Lake Ontario all the way to Steeles Avenue (and beyond). Favourites include, Lambton Park, Humber Marshes Park, Etienne Brule Park, Raymore, and Summerlea Park. Weekend activity: start at the water and travel the whole valley in the course of a day.

Little needs to be said in endorsement of High Park as a destination for fall foliage. The best part is that there's so much to do here beyond hiking the trails that you can easily spend the day surrounded by fall's splendour. Hit up the zoo, lose your kids at the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground, feed some ducks, or do a crit around the roads.

Toronto Islands

The best part about a fall trip to the Islands is that it's way less busy than in the summer months, which allows for more leisurely exploration of the astonishing number of tree species the area has on offer. If you can manage it, take the ferry over on a weekday. It's wonderfully tranquil and the bustle of the city seems so far away.

Leslie Street Spit

Water, sky, and leaves. The Leslie Street spit might not feature as many trees as the ravines on this list, but it's still a gorgeous spot to witness the onset of fall. It's the perfect place for a mid-October bike ride. Head to the lighthouse at the end, and wonder how something that was once so ugly has transformed into one of the most pretty places in the city.

What people love about canada tours from toronto.

It was a great experience and the add on’s that Contiki offered were amazing adventures. The price of the tour was also great and completely worth it for what they gave you.
Our trip was in Eastern Canada the first of July 2023. It was a nightmare to figure out how to get to our hotel from the train and subways, up and down soooo many stairs then walking the rest of the way with our luggage mind you. Definitely call for a ride to the hotel. Our first hotel was nice in Toronto. Niagara Falls was fun and definitely something to experience. The tour buses on our whole trip were comfortable and we had great drivers, especially Mike. He was so personable and took really good care of us! The second hotel in Ottawa was good too but when we went to Quebec City that was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in! The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioner didn’t work well at all, and the shower was messed up and only ran hot water. Then the water wouldn’t shut off so we had to call someone to shut it off with tools. The tub didn’t have anything on the bottom for you to not slip so I slipped getting in and tore the towel rack down which was just glued on. I ended up having to place a towel in the shower where we could take a shower and not fall down. The people that worked there were rude. The carpet in the hallways was disgusting and coming up which is a major trip hazard. One couple that was on the tour with us showed me a piece of metal that fell from his ceiling in his room and hit him in the head. We had to stay two miserable nights there! Our next hotel in Montreal was okay and the last hotel they put us in back in Toronto was a very nice hotel and had a wonderful breakfast. Our guide was nice and informative too. We enjoyed seeing everything we did either while in the bus or walking around the cities. I’m not sure if I will do another group tour or not. Guess we’ll see….

What to expect from Doors Open Toronto this weekend

Social sharing.

The city is holding its annual Doors Open Toronto event this weekend, a program that lets people tour the city's most iconic places and peak behind the curtain.

Digital creator and architecture enthusiast Anne Vranic calls it the Olympics for her and other self-proclaimed history "nerds."

"Typically, I plan weeks in advance because it is a race," she told CBC Toronto. "I just get so excited because it's the architecture nerds' and the culture nerds' time to shine."

For the last 24 years, the annual event has given people free access to the city's historical buildings, unique landmarks and museums. This year there are over 160 sites and running theme is hidden histories and untold stories.

"It helps keep history and heritage on people's radar," Doors Open Toronto's program lead Kristine Williamson told CBC Toronto.

New sites and popular mainstays

This year's lineup includes multiple new buildings, including the historic University Club of Toronto and the Redpath Sugar Plant.

Popular sites such as the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, known as "the Palace of Purification," are also back on the map. The art deco marvel was constructed in 1932 and is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

A woman gives a history tour to a group of people at the University Club of Toronto, an Ontario Heritage site.

Plant manager Gordon Mitchell said last year there were a record 13,000 visitors during Doors Open.

"It's a very beautiful spot on the lake. I'm very proud of our building and we like to maintain it," he said .

Mitchell said this weekend will also provide a opportunity for people to learn about where their water comes from.

"They're curious about issues like fluoridation, lead in drinking water was a big issue a few years ago, so we like to reassure people that we have those issues well in hand."

Museums and interactive events

A number of museums in the city will also have free admission this weekend including the Aga Khan Museum, home to a vast collection of Islamic art.

"We exist to highlight the achievements and contributions of Muslim cultures and the way in which they're connected to everybody else," said Sascha Priewe, the director collections and public programs.

He said this weekend visitors can expect food, drink, performances and arts and crafts in the park.

Across the city at the Toronto Humane Society, tours will allow people to interact with animals while they learn about the organization's beginnings in 1887.

It started with concern for the wellbeing of work horses and a $2-donation, said Lucas Solowey, Toronto Humane Society's manager of public relations.

"But as the organization grew, they also took on child welfare and animal welfare, so the organization's been working on a lot of issues for so many years," he said.

Over a dozen neighbourhood tours will are also taking place, diving into local history, along with a series of talks by architects and urban designers.

Vranic says events like these help raise awareness about preserving Toronto's heritage.

"Every time you open a newspaper, a building is at threat… and it really fills me with hope that that's people aren't taking that lying down. People are passionate about our buildings."

Toronto FC, Philadelphia Union play to goalless draw Back to video

Toronto also surpassed its entire points total for last season.

Toronto (7-7-2) has 23 points, with 54 still on the table during the regular season. TFC finished with 22 points last year when it finished bottom of the league at 4-20-10.

Toronto was without Italian star Lorenzo Insigne, who was back in Italy for the birth of Mattia, his third son. Coach John Herdman said the absence was planned.

“It’s another Insigne hopefully that wants to play for Toronto in the near future,” Herdman joked.

Herdman said there was no definitive word yet on whether Insigne will be back for Saturday’s game at D.C. United. But given the team has a two-week break after that, it would not be surprising to see him get some more time in Naples.

“Sometimes family has to come before football,” said Herdman.

It was a poised, professional performance on the road for Toronto, which had been challenged by Herdman to batten down the defensive hatches.

After conceding 14 goals in its first 11 league games, TFC had leaked 10 in its previous four outings (1-0-3). That dropped the Toronto defence to 21st in the league, conceding an average 1.60 goals a game.

“We wanted to put defending as a priority, but at the same time bring our attacking identity and continue to be brave,” said Herdman. “And I thought tonight we just got the balance right.”

“That’s our sixth clean sheet of the season and a good point on the road. And disappointed not to take three (points),” he added.

Italian Federico Bernardeschi, returning from a one-game ban for yellow card accumulation, had Toronto’s best chances of the night. But scoring chances for both sides were not that plentiful.

Bernardeschi missed a glorious chance in the 42nd minute, firing a shot off the crossbar from close range after a deft setup by Derrick Etienne Jr. and Jonathan Osorio following an errant Philadelphia clearance. The Italian sank to his knees in disbelief after the miss.

Bernardeschi came close again in the 49th minute in the rain, poking the ball just wide of the far post after another Union giveaway.

Toronto outshot Philadelphia 11-10 (3-1 in shots on target). And Johnson was up to the challenge on the Union’s one dangerous chance, making a fine reflex save to block Alejandro Bedoya’s header in the 51st minute.

Johnson is just the fourth goalkeeper in MLS history to record at least 100 regular-season clean sheets. The 16-year veteran, who also has three playoff shutouts, was making his 401st MLS appearance, including regular season (386) and playoff (15) matches.

“He’s starting to become, I think, a bit of an MLS legend,” said Herdman.

It was a third straight shutout for Philadelphia (4-4-7) but also more dropped points at Subaru Park.

“Overall not dangerous enough on the night, not scary enough,” said Philadelphia coach Jim Curtin. “Obviously it’s a positive to keep a clean sheet. We’ve been leaking a lot of goals at home. But at the same time we have to find a balance of being a little bit more brave.”

“A tie feels like a loss when we’re at home,” he added.

Philadelphia has done better on the road (3-0-5) this season than at home (1-4-2) where it had lost a club-record four straight prior to Toronto’s arrival. The Union lost just one league game at Subaru Park the past two seasons (22-1-6).

Toronto went into mid-week play in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, two places and four points ahead of Philadelphia.

Despite recent bumps in the road, TFC had won seven of its previous 10 matches in all competitions (7-3-0).

Philadelphia had just one win in its last seven outings (1-4-2) after going unbeaten in the first seven league games (3-0-4) of the season.

Herdman made five chances to his starting lineup with Bernardeschi, Etienne, Deandre Kerr, Kevin Long and Alonso Coello slotting in.

Philadelphia was without two of its stars in goalkeeper Andre Blake and forward Julian Carranza, one of the team’s designated players.

Blake, the three-time MLS goalkeeper of the year who has not played since April 30, is recovering from meniscus surgery. Carranza has an ankle injury.

Philadelphia hosts CF Montreal on Saturday.

TFC DRAWN TO FACE FORGE FC

Toronto FC will play Canadian Premier League champion Forge FC in one Canadian Championship semifinal with the defending champion Vancouver Whitecaps taking on CPL’s Pacific FC in the other.

The draw for the two-legged semifinals was made Wednesday at halftime of the second leg of the Pacific-Ottawa quarterfinal in Langford, B.C. Pacific won 2-1 after the teams played to a goalless draw in the first leg May 8 at TD Place in Ottawa.

The draw also determined that the winner of the Vancouver-Pacific semifinal will host the stand-alone championship game.

The winner of the 14-team Canadian Championship hoists the Voyageurs Cup, collects $50,000 from Canada Soccer in prize money and qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the confederation’s elite men’s club competition.

Toronto defeated Forge by a penalty shootout in the pandemic-delayed 2020 championship game, which was actually played in June 2022.

Ellen DeGeneres is embarking on one last hurrah in her stand-up career.

This summer, the 66-year-old comedian will take a lap around North America on a 27-show tour, titled Ellen’s Last Stand… Up . Per a release shared with PEOPLE, the dates will be the “last opportunity” to witness DeGeneres in her “final curtain call.”

Produced by Live Nation, Ellen’s Last Stand… Up will be DeGeneres’ final comeback to comedy. The tour will see the former talk show host “reintroduce her trademark wit and laughter-inducing anecdotes” to a live crowd.

"Here it is! These are the cities and dates for my final stand-up tour," DeGeneres wrote on Insatgram . "Pre-sale starts tomorrow May 30th at 10am local time with code CHICKEN. Get your tickets at ellenshop.com/tour."

Tickets will also be available to the general public on Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. local time.

Earlier this May, PEOPLE announced that DeGeneres' upcoming Netflix special — set to be taped Aug. 16 and 17 in Minneapolis — will be her “last.”

“To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it,” DeGeneres said in a statement. “Yes, Portia [de Rossi] really is that pretty in real life."

DeGeneres implies that the stand-up set will broach even the most controversial topics, like the controversy surrounding The Ellen DeGeneres Show 's alleged toxic workplace environment. The claims, which first emerged in a BuzzFeed News report , included being penalized for taking medical leave, instances of racial microaggressions and fear of punishment for raising complaints.

DeGeneres long-running series concluded in 2022 after 19 seasons. Before that, she confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the toxic workplace controversy was not a factor in her decision to conclude the series.

In her latest routine, which she performed at the Largo in Los Angeles on April 24 , DeGeneres joked about being “kicked out of show business” for being “mean.” She also admitted that although she “hated the way the show ended,” she was happy to be back onstage with her marriage to de Rossi, 51, stronger than ever.

“I think we need more laughter and less drama,” the Emmy winner added.

Michael Rozman/Warner Bros.

With a comedy career dating back to the ‘70s, the Seriously…I’m Kidding author has racked up numerous accolades over the years, including 12 Daytime Emmy awards for outstanding entertainment talk show, a Primetime Emmy award for her self-titled sitcom, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom .

Her most recent Netflix special, Relatable , was released in 2018 following a 15-year hiatus from stand-up comedy. In February 2024, she made another return to her roots to perform a surprise set at Beth Stelling’s “Beth & Pals” show alongside Adam Sandler , Sarah Silverman , Aidy Bryant , Ted Lasso ’s Brett Goldstein , Alana Johnston and Nthenya from Kenya.

Taylor Swift Adds 3 Opening Acts to London Eras Tour Shows: 'I Chose Artists Whose Music I Love Listening to'

On Monday, May 27, the pop megastar announced that she would be adding three opening acts to her Wembley Stadium shows in June

The Eras Tour just got even better!

On Monday, May 27, Taylor Swift announced on her Instagram Stories that she would be adding three opening acts to her Wembley Stadium Eras Tour shows in London — Mette on Friday, June 21, Griff on Saturday, June 22 and Benson Boone on Sunday, June 23.

"I just found out Fortnight is #1 on the UK airplay chart!!!!" the "Cruel Summer" artist, 34, said alongside an Eras Tour poster. "Thought this might be a fun time to announce the first group of opening acts I'll be adding to the London shows, going on before Paramore . I chose artists whose music I love listening to, and I can't wait for them to add an extra jolt of excitement to our shows."

Her new opening acts all replied to the news with excitement on social media.

"It’s a new ERA for ya girl… Opening the “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” on June 21st at Wembley Stadium in London. Thank you @taylorswift13 - Never been so excited in my entire life!!! #TSTheErasTour ," wrote the "DARLING DRIVE" artist, 32, on social media alongside the tour poster.

The "Vertigo" performer, 23, shared a photo of the tour poster and a shot of her and Swift eating French fries together at the 2021 BRITs on social media : "TAYLOR SWIFT HAS INVITED ME ON THE ERAS TOUR!!!!!! 8 yr old me who had fearless on repeat wouldn’t believe this. So unbelievably grateful to Taylor for all the love she’s shown me and my music. See you at Wembley on June 22nd. Ly 📷 📷 📷 #TSTheErasTour ."

Swift previously gave Griff a shout-out in September 2023 on her Instagram Story, writing “Damn Griff I love this one,” as she shared her single "Vertigo."

“Her popping up the other week and posting ‘Vertigo’ is the most crazy thing because it's like — she never posts and she really doesn't have to do that. So it's really kind of her to be so generous with promoting that,” she told PEOPLE. “It's really cool.”

After she saw the post, Griff thought “What the f---?” and then, “How do I even thank her?”

The "Miss Me Too" singer said that while they don't "have a constant point of contact," Swift has become "this fairy godmother that pops up and makes things amazing for me."

The "Slow It Down" musician, 21, reshared the 14-time Grammy winner's Instagram Stories with the caption, "@taylorswift so excited to be a part of the show thank you for having me 😭❤️."
