Bachelor has excellent skiing and affordable pricing for a ski resort on the west coastAnyone who loves good skiing, a good deal, and ending a day of great skiing with a good beer needs to get themselves to Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort. The resort averages 387 inches of good snowfall yearly and has more than 3,700 acres crisscrossed by great ski trails. One of the resort’s most exciting features is its 3,365-foot vertical drop.

While skiing is just one feature that draws skiers to the area (of course), there are also incredible benefits close by. Located just a few minutes drive, guests can enjoy 14 different breweries, making it easy for you to find a spot to hang out with the new friends you met while cruising the slopes. The nearby town is also home to several yoga studios where you can limber after a long day out on the mountain. There’s nothing quite like a relaxing getaway that offers you everything you want at a fraction of the cost of most resorts.

8 Ski Towns Just Like Aspen but Much Cheaper

W ith its fancy resort hotels, high-end dining and designer shopping , Aspen, Colorado has long been a popular winter getaway for the rich and famous, yet has become financially out of reach for most ordinary people. In general, skiing has never been a sport for the frugal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it on a budget.

1. Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky, located in Bozeman, Montana, is a great destination for the budget-conscious skier. You can fly non-stop into Bozeman from 30 U.S. destinations, from Boston to Houston to Los Angeles. At Big Sky Resort, you can book your lodging, lift tickets, lessons and ski rentals all in one place, and save with package pricing.

2. Ketchum, Idaho

Ketchum and nearby Sun Valley offer a resort feel at more reasonable prices than Utah or Colorado resorts.

The Knob Hill Inn offers reasonable room rates and discounts for booking early. You might also check out the Best Wester Tyrolean Lodge or Cottonwood Condominiums.

3. Stowe, Vermont

A quintessential New England ski town, Stowe has resorts, hotels, dining and most of all, charm. Stay in The Lodge at Spruce Peak Village for an all-in-one experience, or choose a nearby bed-and-breakfast or vacation rental property. If you plan ahead, you can even stay at the Trapp Family Lodge, which is still run by members of the Von Trapp family of The Sound of Music fame.

4. Park City, Utah

Park City hosted most of the major skiing and snowboarding events of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Winter sports enthusiasts can choose from the Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain and Woodward Park City for skiing, snowboarding, telemarking and even heli-skiing.

For a luxury experience, stay at the Montage at Deer Valley or St. Regis Deer Valley — book early and stay five or more days for discounts. If these resorts are out of your budget, look for VRBO or Airbnb rentals.

5. Truckee-Tahoe, California

The Lake Tahoe area is a year-round vacation destination and is home to several world class resorts for skiers and snowboarders. The area averages 380 inches of snow each winter, enough to satisfy even the most die-hard snow sports enthusiast.

For ski-in, ski-out condo rentals, check out Red Wolf Lodge at Olympic Valley. Or stay at Forest Suites Resort at Heavenly Valley, where you can hop on the Heavenly Ski Resort Gondola for that first run of the day.

6. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole in the Tetons is assessable from 12 major U.S. cities by non-stop flight into Jackson Hole airport, 20 miles from the resort. An interesting fact about the mountain: Air temperatures at the top of the mountain can be 30 to 40 degrees warmer than in the valley. Here — unlike most ski areas — if you want to warm up, go up to the top of the mountain, not down to the base.

Jackson Hole has a large selection of accommodations just off the mountain where you can get a great deal (under $200 a night). Many have a shuttle that will take you to the mountain, so if you don’t need a ski-in, ski-out location, there are bargains to be had here.

7. Arapahoe Basin, Colorado

If Aspen is too pricey for you but you still want to ski in Colorado, try Arapahoe Basin. Lift tickets can cost less than $100, especially on weekdays, but you have to purchase in advance online. You can get an even better deal if you’re skiing for three or more days. With smaller crowds and shorter lines, you’ll get even more for your money here.

Lodging in Arapahoe Basin is affordable too, with well-known hotel chains like Best Western, Comfort Suites and Homewood Suites by Hilton providing clean, dependable, no-frills accommodations.

8. Beech Mountain, North Carolina

North Carolina may not be the first destination that pops into your mind for a ski vacation, but it’s worth a look, especially if you’re on a budget.

The Beech Mountain Resort offers lodging, lift tickets, lessons and equipment rentals all in one place. You can get a lift ticket for $40, or about $300 for a five-day pass, and accommodations are reasonable as well. If snow isn’t in the forecast, they’ll make some for you, so don’t discount a North Carolina ski vacation.

Tips for Saving on Your Ski Vacation

Smart planning will help you save money on your ski vacation. Here are some tips to help:

Look close to home.

Find a destination you can drive to, rather than paying to take the whole family on a cross-country flight. If driving isn’t possible, look for a place you can get to on a non-stop flight, which is often cheaper and will save you time.

Buy your lodging and lift tickets in advance.

The earlier you book your lodging, the better deal you’re likely to get. Lift tickets are typically priced the same no matter when you buy them, but you should still buy them early — popular mountains may sell out and then you’d be left out in the, well, cold.

Look for multi-day tickets or even season passes.

Many mountains offer a discount if you buy a ticket for two, three or more days. In some cases, depending on the length of your vacation, you may even be better off to buy a season ticket – do the math and see which deal is best for you. If you need to rent equipment and/or want to take a lesson, look for deals on the things you need when you buy everything together.

If you don’t need spa services or a hot tub, consider VRBO or AirBNB rentals instead of resort hotels.

By renting a place with a kitchen, you can save even more by cooking your own meals instead of dining out in restaurants.

Avoid peak vacation times.

Holiday periods like Christmas, New Year’s, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend and President’s Day weekend and the following week are common school and work vacation weeks/ weekends. Bargains instead can often be had in the first and last weeks of the season, although you run the risk of not having enough snow.

When you employ these cost-saving strategies on your next ski vacation,  you’ll still have as much fun as you would have had at a high-end resort, but without the post-vacation money hangover.

Top 10 Resorts in the West for Access

No. 10: breckenridge resort, colo..

Score: 7.78 Other Strengths: Terrain Variety, Challenge Weaknesses: Value, Guest Service

Breckenridge Access RG23

What Readers Say

“Dependable snow throughout the season. Good variety of terrain for my wife and I. Relatively easy to get to from my home state of Florida. Good lodging options. Reasonable parking fees.”

“First time at Breckenridge and it more than exceeded my expectation. Had heard all of the horror stories of ‘epic lift lines’ and I-70 traffic. We planned accordingly (Sunday-Thursday trip) and didn’t encounter any issues. The breadth and quality of terrain was great, especially the high-alpine runs on Peaks 6 and 8.”

“This is my home away from home. I have traveled to ski it multiple times in my life, and I don’t plan on stopping. The terrain always gives me butterflies in my stomach when I want a challenge, or I can run away to Peak 7 and the new Peak 6 for a true blue cruiser experience. Rinse, repeat. If I want to fry my legs, a run or two at Peak 10 or any of the bowls is enough to give you that workout. The town is fantastic, and travel to Colorado via Denver is a direct flight and a two-hour drive. It is my happy place, even though it is big and has winds that rightfully give it the nickname ‘Breckenfridge.’ I have skied January and late March/early April. Lift lines have never bothered me. Resort does a good job communicating. If you avoid Peak 8 at peak times, lines won’t be an issue. This is easy to do with beginner terrain on Peak 9, and easy traverses to get to Peak 7 and the bowls.”

No. 9: Snowbird Resort, Utah

Score: 7.99 Other Strengths: Challenge, Snow Weaknesses: Nightlife, Après

“Snowbird is an easy one-hour drive from Salt Lake City, a major airport that is easy to reach from anywhere. The ‘Bird is isolated—you won’t walk out of your hotel and stroll along a commercial promenade. Snowbird is there for the skiing—THAT is the focus.

“Superior snow conditions when it snows in LCC otherwise can be difficult in a low snow year because of rocky, jagged, terrain. Tops for terrain and challenge lots of steeps and chutes here with relentless vertical and few flats and run-outs. Not a great place for beginners, just looking at the mountain can be intimidating. Great for access and close to the SLC airport but also can be extremely crowded, especially on weekends.”

“Snowbird is a legendary place. Full of tradition and fun for three generations in my family. We love it! Parking can be a problem sometimes but mostly it’s easy. The Snowbird Center has so many choices for food and skier needs. Love the Creekside area and the ease of parking and lifts in Gad Valley. Baby Thunder is great for families. Fun concerts and family events year round.”

No. 8: Keystone Resort, Colo.

Score: 8.00 Other Strengths: Lifts, Family Friendly Weaknesses: Après, Nightlife

“It is one of the resorts where I skied this year. Family friendly, but I also enjoyed it skiing solo. Pretty easy to find your way around.”

“It’s simple, it’s extremely easy to access without being overcrowded. Additionally there is terrain for first-timers and higher-level experts.”

“Since skiing back East was terrible this season we decided to go to Colorado. Keystone had great terrain and chairlifts were all open as well as trails.”

No. 7: Alta Ski Area, Utah

Score: 8.01 Other Strengths: Snow, Challenge Weaknesses: Nightlife, Après

Alta Access RG23

“I find Alta to be a true skier’s resort. There are things I’m willing to give up for great skiing, and that’s all I ask of Alta. They provide what I want. It’s also easy to fly into SLC and commute to Alta.”

“Challenging terrain is everywhere and relatively easy to reach, yet the groomers are plentiful. There’s not a lot of beginner terrain, though. And the snow … the snow. Let’s just say that when you close your eyes and dream of extraordinary snow, you are seeing Alta.”

“Alta is fantastic! Parking is hard on the weekend but in the middle of the week it’s easy peasy. The folks are nice who work there. The lift lines are organized. They have fun events and music going all year. An exceptional environmental education program. Things for skiers and non skiers to do to enjoy the slopes and nature. The food is more affordable than most ski areas. Easy to brown bag a lunch or tailgate vs going into the lodge. Alta is currently my favorite in Utah.”

No. 6: Winter Park Resort, Colo.

Score: 8.07 Other Strengths: Challenge, Terrain Variety Weaknesses: Après, Nightlife

Winter Park Access RG23

“Large resort with plenty of high sped lifts. Convenient FREE parking is available, although it can fill quickly on a powder day.”

“Less time on I-70, better is snow than Summit County.”

“My day trip go-to in order to not spend as much time on I-70.”

No. 5: Arapahoe Basin, Colo.

Score: 8.10 Other Strengths: Challenge, Value Weaknesses: Lodging, Nightlife

Arapahoe Basin Access RG23

“If you’re looking for a place with local flair that feels like skiing 25 years ago (in the best possible way), A-Basin is your spot. Setting aside the fact that I can be there in an hour from Denver, the Basin is a true skier’s mountain, built for purists who don’t want (or need) the pomp and glitz of a Vail or Beaver Creek. What it lacks in high-speed quads, the Basin makes up for on variety of terrain, gnarly hike-to options and length of season. Highly recommend for out-of-towners looking for a pure local experience and a hill where McConkey would have fit right in.”

“It’s a refreshing change of pace from the Colorado resorts. Great local color and very welcoming staff.”

“A-Basin is in an excellent location in Summit County, so you can get everything you need for the hours off of the mountain. The food on-mountain is better than any other resort, especially the grill at the base. Wish parking were easier.”

No. 4: Copper Mountain, Colo.

Score : 8.27 Other Strengths: Terrain Variety, Overall Satisfaction Weaknesses: Nightlife, Dining

Copper Access RG23

“Best laid-out mountain in Colorado, excellent grooming, easy to get to.”

“Copper is great fun. I skied there eight days over the last two years. Terrain variety is great. The lifts are good. Parking and FREE shuttle bus system are fantastic. Good for all abilities, wonderful fun. Like Mammoth Mountain, Calif., I never get tired of this place.”

“I love Copper! The terrain is great, staff so friendly, great visibility of ski patrol, great lodging and food options, easy to get to. The lift system is great. I would recommend it to all levels of skiers. Great for families and new skiers and plenty of expert terrain. Wish there were a few more places open to grab dinner on the resort and wish there were a few more non-expert level glades to ski.”

No. 3: Park City Resort, Utah

Score: 8.34 Other Strengths: Lodging, Nightlife Weaknesses: Snow, Value

Park City Access RG23

“Park City has it all: easy access via Salt Lake International airport, amazing terrain and size, an authentic town with real amenities and world-class restaurants, and nightlife to boot. Family friendly services abound. The only issue is that everyone else knows all of this and flocks to Park City.”

“Easy access, good local transportation, great variety of trails and lifts, plenty of choices for terrain between Canyons and Park City. Some lifts were closed because not enough employees to run lifts. Great snow conditions when I was there, but overall less than average snowfall.”

“I love the short 40-minute drive from the airport to the mountain. I love the town, the people, and the vibe of this great town. 2021-2022 season had quite a few challenges although during my visit I only experienced the closure of most mid-mountain lodges/dining but was not a huge issue. We party in the parking lot at the end of the day and of course at The Pig Pen Saloon.”

No. 2: Snowbasin Resort, Utah

Score: 8.82 Other Strengths: Lift, Guest Service Weaknesses: Nightlife, Lodging

Snowbasin Access RG23

“Snowbasin has been discovered but it’s still not crowded. Great for families, great terrain, less than an hour to the Salt Lake City airport. Very friendly employees.”

“Best value proposition close to an international airport. Tons of space and no crowds or lines.”

“I liked the accessibility of the resort. You could drive up to the main lodge and drop off your stuff, and it was an easy walk to the main lift. The lodge is beautiful, food was good, and they had a nice patio area for lunch and après ski. They didn’t have a lot of snow when we visited, but conditions were as good as they could be. Locals were super friendly and spent time to show us around. We stayed at an Airbnb in Ogden so it was about a 30 minute ride to the resort.”

No. 1: Deer Valley Resort, Utah

Score: 9.14 Other Strengths: Dining, Guest Service Weaknesses: Challenge, Value

Deer Valley Access RG23

“Deer Valley is the best destination ski resort in the country. With a world-class ski school, fine lodging and dining, and great accessibility from an international airport, there is no better place for your family to have your best ski vacation possible.”

“Easy to get to via direct flights to Salt Lake City airport, amazing food options, good variety of ski terrain, short lift lines.”

“Great trees and bumps, great snow, normally great variety for all skiers, great local transportation to access mountains and restaurants, easy access from airport.”

8 affordable ski resorts in the US worth the trip

Terry Ward

Schussing down a mountain, fresh air filling your lungs and sunlight dappling through silvery aspen groves, should not be a cost-prohibitive experience.

However, at many resorts across the U.S. — where lift tickets tend to land well north of the $100-per-day mark (and sometimes far, far, more) — skiing is hardly a sport for the masses. This rings especially true once you add in the cost of a hotel, ski lessons, meals and some apres-ski entertainment.

However, with a little advanced planning (and as long as you don't demand the most extreme vertical drop, back bowl action or thousands of acres of lift-serviced terrain), there are still many stellar places across the country where an affordable ski vacation is within reach.

From Utah's Wasatch Mountains to the ponderosa pine-covered peaks of Northern Arizona, here are some of the best and most affordable ski resorts worth traveling to around the U.S.

Nordic Valley, Utah

most affordable ski trip out west

Head to the casually cool and utterly underrated little mountain town of Ogden, Utah, just a 40-mile drive north of Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). It's the ideal base for an affordable family ski vacation with plenty of downhill options in the Wasatch Mountains.

In addition to points hotels galore (including Tru by Hilton Ogden , Courtyard by Marriott Ogden and Home2Suites by Hilton Ogden , among others), there are great restaurants and breweries to check out along historic 25th Street after a day in the surrounding snowy peaks.

Staying here puts you within a roughly 30-minute drive of three epic Utah ski resorts, including Snowbasin , Powder Mountain and, the most affordable and delightfully old-school among them, Nordic Valley ; the latter served as one of the downhill training ski areas during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Kids 12 and under ski free at Nordic Valley all season, with no blackout dates. General lift tickets start as low as $12 per day at Nordic Valley — not to mention, there are discounts of 60% off when you purchase passes online at least 48 hours before you plan to ski. There's night skiing, too.

Children's group lessons (with up to six students) are available for kids between 8 and 17 years old, and they cost just $67 for two hours. Something else that's hard to beat in Nordic Valley (besides the rustic, barn-style feel of its cozy base lodge) is the fact that you'll almost never have to wait in a line to access the 450 acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain.

Granite Peak, Wisconsin

most affordable ski trip out west

Downhill skiing and snowboarding in Wisconsin? You betcha. Drive less than two hours west of Green Bay to reach the hamlet of Wausau, where you can cash in points for a winter ski stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Wausau or Hampton Inn Wausau , both within just a 10-minute drive of Granite Peak ski resort at Rib Mountain State Park.

Kids 5 and under ski free (as well as seniors 80 and up) at Wisconsin's top ski mountain. It boasts 60 trails spread across 200 acres of terrain, all serviced by the speediest lift system in the Midwest (including Wisconsin's only six-pack chairlift).

What we really love about this place, however, is the friendly vibe. There is a historic wooden chalet at the mountain's base and fire pits outside, where locals and out-of-towners mingle over craft beers.

For great views of the mountain lit up for night skiing, excellent Italian fare and the requisite state cocktail (the Wisconsin Old Fashioned), snag a table at Carmelo's Italian Restaurant . Don't miss the chance to browse Wisconsin's oldest book store, Janke Book Store , along Wausau's historic main drag back in town for a great selection of local history and Midwest travel books.

Canaan Valley Resort, West Virginia

most affordable ski trip out west

Set your sights on the highest valley east of the Mississippi River for affordable family skiing in the Allegheny Mountains, where you can get the adrenaline going without breaking the bank. Roughly three hours from Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, Canaan Valley Resort is located within Canaan Valley Resort State Park and offers a budget-friendly way to make the most of West Virginia's winter.

You can opt to stay on-site at the park's main lodge or in one of 23 cozy cabins with wood-burning fireplaces and gas grills, located just a half-mile away. The summit sits 4,280 feet above sea level, so altitude sickness shouldn't be a problem. There are 91 skiable acres serviced by four lifts that access 47 runs covering beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. There's also an on-site terrain park and ski school.

Guests ages 5 and under and 70 or older ski for free. Walk-up lift tickets are usually priced around $65 for adults mid-week and $80 over the weekend, with discounts for multiple days.

Snowbowl, Arizona

most affordable ski trip out west

Gliding through a winter wonderland might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Grand Canyon State. However, families looking to save money on a wintry getaway in the Southwest know to hightail it to the mountains around Flagstaff for a ski vacation on a budget.

With 2,300 feet of vertical drop, 777 skiable acres and the largest beginner terrain in the southwestern U.S., Snowbowl offers the same Power Kids FREE Season Pass as Nordic Valley; this means kids 12 and under ski free, with no blackout dates all season long. (Other ski resorts around the U.S. offering the same deal include Purgatory Resort and Hesperus Ski Area in Durango, Colorado; Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort in Taos, New Mexico; Pajarito Mountain Ski Area in Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Brian Head Resort in Utah.)

Lift tickets at the Arizona resort run around $60 per day for adults. Kids between the ages of 6 and 12 can ski for just $27, so you can save some serious money on the mountain. There are several Marriott properties to put on your radar in Flagstaff for a points stay, including the Residence Inn by Marriott Flagstaff , Courtyard by Marriott and SpringHill Suites by Marriott Flagstaff . When you want a break from the mountain, Grand Canyon National Park is just 80 miles away.

Donner Ski Ranch, California

most affordable ski trip out west

Less than three hours from San Francisco and less than an hour from Reno, Donner Ski Ranch makes a ski vacation in the Sierras an affordable reality. Adult lift tickets cost around $89 per day (or just $49 on " old school days ").

Located in eastern California's Nevada County, right near Lake Tahoe and the Nevada border, the family-friendly resort is one of the oldest ski areas in the U.S. It offers beginner and intermediate skiers some excellent terrain, including 1,000 feet of vertical drop and 500 skiable acres

Settle in on the deck of the old lodge at the mountain's base for nachos and a beer while watching skiers make their way down the slopes at day's end. Or, muster the energy for tube runs with the kids at the on-site snow-tubing hill. There are rustic cottages to rent nearby on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, as well as a few points hotel options like the Best Western Plus Truckee-Tahoe Hotel , just 12 miles east of the mountain.

Cochran's Ski Area, Vermont

most affordable ski trip out west

Ask anyone in Burlington, Vermont, where their kids first strapped on skis to go downhill the first time and they'll likely tell you it was at Cochran's Ski Area . Cochran is a super-friendly, postage-stamp-size resort located in the community of Richmond, just 15 miles from the college town of Burlington.

One of the only nonprofit ski areas in the U.S., the resort's entire mission is to provide affordable skiing and snowboarding (as well as lessons and race training) to young people and their families.

Kids 5 and under as well as seniors 72 and older ski for free at Cochran's, and adults pay just under $20 on the weekends and just $10 on weekdays. This puts the spot easily among the most affordable ski mountains in the Northern Hemisphere. (Night skiing is only $5.)

The summit here maxes out at less than 1,000 feet and there are only eight trails to ski. Still, if you're looking to introduce the family to the sport at a very friendly price point, Cochran's is hard to beat. Stay in Burlington for excellent restaurants and breweries (apres ski in Vermont means great local beers) plus a slew of Marriott and Hilton properties for a points stay.

Sunlight Mountain Resort, Colorado

most affordable ski trip out west

With powder stashes that tend to last longer than those at Colorado's mega ski resorts (thanks to fewer crowds) and 72 trails that all lead back to the lodge, this resort just south of Glenwood Springs is a budget-friendly alternative to Aspen-Snowmass Ski Resort, also in the area.

Kids 12 and under ski free with a paying adult at Sunlight Mountain Resort through the Ski, Swim & Stay program; the program applies to those who stay at hotel partners including Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, The Hotel Colorado and The Hotel Denver, among a few other nearby hotels.

Kids 5 and under and adults 80 and older ski free here, and lift tickets for adults are well under $100 per day (and around $50 for kids ages 6 to 14). This scenic part of Colorado is a hot spot for hot springs, too, which is about the best apres ski activity you can ask for. In addition to the famous Glenwood Hot Springs Pool in town, set your sights on other area favorites like Iron Mountain Hot Springs and the hot springs vapor caves at Yampah Spa .

Ski Apache, New Mexico

most affordable ski trip out west

Head to the Sierra Blanca Mountains of southern New Mexico and save money on family ski fun at Ski Apache . This resort is owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe, and it's located roughly 190 miles southeast of Albuquerque.

With nine lifts and 55 trails as well as the only eight-person gondola in the state, the resort tends to wow first-timers who never expected to find such good skiing in New Mexico. Walk-up lift tickets cost $75 for adults and $55 for kids, and you can save on group ski lessons, too, which are similarly affordable.

Settle into a cabin rental in nearby Ruidoso during your trip. Or, book a room at the luxury casino and golf resort, Inn of the Mountain Gods , located on the Mescalero Apache Reservation and less than an hour's drive from Ski Apache.

These 10 Ski Resorts Are Ranked Most Affordable in the U.S. — See Which Ones Made the List

Hit the slopes without breaking the bank.

most affordable ski trip out west

While the cost of heading to a ski resort can add up quite quickly, these budget-friendly options are here to help ski lovers hit the slopes for less.

In search of the most affordable options, Holidu, a vacation rental search engine, surveyed more than 500 American ski resorts to create its U.S. Ski Price Index to help avid skiers unearth the best deals out there.

At the top of the list? Powder Mountain, located between Eden and Paradise in Utah.

Powder Mountain sees about 500 inches of powdery snowfall a year. It can be enjoyed for an average of $74 per person each day — or less than $2 per skiable kilometer — and includes ski passes and accommodations.

"You are sure to get your money's worth on this mountain," Holidu's report read.

Schweitzer Mountain in Sandpoint, Idaho, came in second with an average per person daily price of $78. The mountain even offers twilight skiing in the evenings.

However, when it comes to east coast skiing, Holidu recommends Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine, where a day on the slopes and evening of apres-ski activities costs just under $120 a person.

"Sugarloaf is the best bang for your buck with the lowest cost per km of skiable slopes," Holidu noted.

Utah, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado are home to several of the most affordable ski trip options in the U.S. But Colorado also is home to several of the most expensive ski destinations in the country.

The average price of a per day ski trip to Vail , Colo., comes in at just under $400 per person, according to Holidu. Meanwhile, Aspen skiing averages just under $302 per person each day.

Here's the full list of Holidu's top 10 budget-friendly ski resorts:

Powder Mountain, Utah

Schweitzer Mountain, Idaho

Mt. Hood Meadows, Ore.

Purgatory, Colo.

Mt. Baker, Wash.

Sugarloaf, Maine

Mission Ridge, Wash.

Mt. Bachelor, Ore.

Winter Park Resort, Colo.

Cooper Hill Ski Area: Leadville

Not to be confused with Copper, Cooper is located near Leadville – the highest incorporated city in North America – about 100 miles from Denver. Cooper is one of the smaller ski resorts in Colorado, with less than 500 skiable acres, five lifts and 64 trails, but don't let its size deter you: The resort is perfect for a family weekend getaway . Cooper Hill Ski Area boasts few lift lines and plenty of powder days, with 260 inches of annual snowfall on average and a unique philosophy of not over-grooming terrain. Plus, if you want more to explore, Cooper offers snowcat skiing tours on Chicago Ridge, giving you 2,600 more acres for cold weather adventures.

If you're a beginner, Cooper's Ski School hosts private and semiprivate ski and snowboard lessons for all ages. Families can even take lessons together at a discounted rate. Even more, Cooper boasts the longest magic carpet in Colorado. There are no lodging options at the resort itself, but Leadville offers plenty of hotels, inns, bed-and-breakfasts and more. For a unique experience, book a stay at Tiny House Leadville. Recent lodgers love the comfort and coziness of a tiny house, but some warn about poor Wi-Fi.

The resort comprises two ski areas: Loveland Basin and Loveland Valley. Loveland Basin is the main area, featuring terrain for all ages and skill levels as well a variety of family-friendly events. At Loveland Valley, a separate area just for beginners, you won't have to worry about running into more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Loveland Valley is also home to Loveland's Ski & Ride School. If you're new to skiing or snowboarding, consider taking a Wolf Creek professional group or private lesson. Book an overnight stay at The Springs Resort & Spa in Pagosa Springs for your family getaway. Recent guests recommend soaking in the springs after a long day skiing and praise the friendly staff.

Planning Your Colorado Ski Resort Vacation

Before planning your next Colorado ski trip, you'll need to identify your experience level and determine which passes or tickets to buy.

Experience level

The difficulty of a ski run is often classed by color: Green runs are wide and easy, blue runs are slightly steeper and moderately difficult, black diamonds are steep and difficult, and double black diamonds are very steep and very difficult. If you're just starting to learn, you'll be spending most of your time on bunny hills – ski areas set aside for beginners – and conveyer belts (often called "magic carpets") before progressing to greens and perhaps a blue run or two.

There are a variety of pass and ticket options for every Colorado ski resort. Check each resort's website for season passes; day, multiday or family tickets; and discounts or free day options at partner resorts.

If you'd like access to multiple ski resorts across the state as well several other countries (including Canada , Australia , Switzerland and more), consider purchasing either the Ikon Pass or the Epic Pass. And, if you have a child in grades three through six, don't forget to check out the Ski Passport Program.

  • Ikon Pass: At $1,179 for adult skiers and snowboarders of the 2022-23 season, the Ikon Pass includes access to more than 50 ski destinations, including six Colorado resorts; Boyne Mountain, a top Michigan ski resort ; Windham Mountain, a top New York ski resort ; and even Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley in the stunning French Alps . The pass also includes lift ticket discounts for friends and family, lodging deals and more. Check the Ikon Pass website for pass prices for kids and young adults, and pay only $839 for the Ikon pass if you're a college student, nurse or military member.
  • Epic Pass: The Epic Pass, $879 for adults in the 2022-23 season, grants access to more than 60 ski resorts across the state, country and world, such as Arlberg, Austria ; Verbier 4 Vallées, Switzerland; and Hakuba Valley, Japan . The pass also includes discounts on food, lodging, lessons, rentals and more, as well as discounted tickets to share with friends or family. Visit the Epic Pass website for the full list of pass options, including the full Epic Pass, one- to seven-day passes, regional passes and child passes.
  • Ski Passport Program: Available for third to sixth graders, the Ski Passport Program gives access to 20 ski areas – with four days at each participating resort – for only $59. Check the website for blackout dates and other helpful information.

Why all-inclusive ski trips are a great vacation now and next winter.

It's over 100-degrees in parts of the country right now, so think how cool it woudl be to go skiing ... [+] or snowboarding. It's not too soon to start planning travel for next winter.

As a massive heat wave grips much of the U.S. and delivers record temperatures to many of us, it’s tempting to think about winter, snow and skiing.

So even as we start planning for next winter—and it’s definitely not too early with some destinations already selling out—it is important to remember that even as we sweat it out, it’s winter right now in half the world, and one of the best ski resorts in that half is off to a great start with record snowfalls. It is also on the all-inclusive model, which is especially useful for ski travel.

There’s no form of travel I enjoy that has the capacity to induce sticker shock to vacationers as much as skiing. Plan a “conventional” family ski trip and you’ll watch the costs add up quickly, with a high likelihood of returning home way over budget.

Costly surprises run the gamut from outrageous après cocktails and overpriced—and often unimpressive—on-mountain lunches to—especially in this country, lessons and sky-high equipment rentals. Stay at a well-known U.S. ski resort and your hotel might well whack you for $30-$50 or more a day in parking and “resort fees” that you get nothing for.

But there is a better way.

All-inclusive vacations originated as a solution for budget travel, and bargain prices still proliferate, especially for beach lovers in Mexico and the Caribbean. But today top tier luxury has permeated just about every form of all-inclusive travel, from stunning Forbes 5-Star boutique resorts like Vermont’s Twin Farms to the highest-end truly all-inclusive cruises, such as Regent Seven Seas , which even throws in shore excursions. Considered the top company in its field, Micato Safaris , the only 10-time winner of Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Safari company, includes every single tip along the way and all meals and wines—even when you are eating out on your own at fine-dining restaurants you chose yourself in cities along the way. There are now several deluxe larger Mexican resorts like the Forbes 5-Star Grand Velas Los Cabos , and the very best dude ranches, including Forbes 4 and 5-Star properties, almost all fit in this category. So does skiing.

Portillo, a world-famous all-inclusive ski resort in Chile, just got 45-inches of snow in a single ... [+] storm and opened last week for the Southern Hemisphere winter.

‘Hit Man’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Movie

Ea college football 25 kicks off a wave of sports video game releases, here s the exact time elden ring dlc shadow of the erdtree releases in every region.

All-inclusive definitely does not mean budget travel, especially at the luxury end, but it usually means value travel, as you get a lot of bang for your buck without egregious extras. But while the ski industry is a space that needs all-inclusives more than many other types of travel, and the range of options keeps increasing, these types of skiing and snowboarding trips have been largely overlooked even by savvy travelers. While most know that this strategy works for warm weather destinations, few realize there are many variants on all-inclusive winter vacations.

The bottom line is that you can have a great ski trip at whatever level of luxury you want and probably save money, but at the very least, know the entire price of the trip up front and stick to your budget. Here are some of the top options.

Portillo, Chile

Chile’s Portillo resort is widely considered one of the best ski resorts in the Southern hemisphere and is an icon in the ski world, a place where many national teams and pro racers go to train when it is summer in the Northern hemisphere. But the Andes, the world’s second highest mountain range after the Himalayas, have been getting absolutely crushed this season, and Portillo opened last weekend, earlier than planned, after receiving nearly four feet (45-inches) of snow in just 36 hours, with more big storms forecast. Portillo is run like a slope-side cruise ship, with weeklong all-inclusive stays in the 123-room ski-in/ski-out Hotel Portillo. There are also two dorm-like small lodges aimed at budget and single travelers and more luxurious chalets for families and groups.

The iconic yellow Hotel Portillo sits in the edge of a high-alpine lake in the Andes and offers one ... [+] of the best deals in ski and snowboard travel.

The bottom line is that it’s hard to get 450 people here, and as there is no town, they basically have the entire full-sized ski resort to themselves, no lift lines, no crowded slopes, lots of fresh powder. I’ve been, it is great, the food and wine are distinctly local in flavor and of high quality, there’s a disco, movie theater, bars, fitness center, outdoor pool and hot tubs, a spa and even heli-skiing on site. Lift tickets and four meals daily in multiple venues are included, and they even throw in childcare for families. Rates run $3,000 to $5,000 per person for full weeks, based on season. In part because of its early opening, the resort just dropped bookings before July 26 by 15%, about a thousand dollars savings per couple.

Portillo is a great summer ski or snowboard trip turnkey and very easy. The gateway city of Santiago is easy to get to, a great destination and very underrated city for pre or post stays, and Chile is extremely affordable.

French Chalets

If you want a true luxury ski vacation with a super-relaxed, laid-back vibe and nothing to worry about, check out Purple Ski and its managed chalets at the largest ski resort in the world, plus others. Last year Purple's Chalet Machapucare in Val d'Isere won "Best Chalet in France" at the World Ski Awards, with full-sized indoor pool and hotel-quality gym.

Billiards? Gourmet dining? Skiing? When you book one of Purple Ski's luxury chalets in France the ... [+] world is your oyster.

The British invented the ski vacation, crossing the Channel to ski in the Alps, and to them, a ski vacation has long meant a chalet vacation. Now Americans are finally catching on to this entirely different model for a ski vacation—and when they do it is hard for them to go back. I wrote about the European chalet model and why it is so great at length here at Forbes back in December, so you can check that out for more detail.

Here’s the short version: vacation home rentals in this country usually come with little more than the key. The European model for an all-inclusive trip is the staffed chalet, a luxury home that in addition to things like hot tubs, sauna, steam room, gym, and even full-size indoor swimming pool, comes with chef, service staff and a chalet manager. Rates usually include all meals (with one night out on your own), all booze, including free flowing real champagne, and on-demand local transportation. Wake up to your hot cooked breakfast, come back to be greeted at the door with après canapes and flutes of bubbly, then hot tub or get a massage or nap or play board games until it’s time for a gourmet dinner with perfectly matched French wine pairings. If you want a masseuse, ski instructor/guide, rentals delivered to the chalet, or lift tickets (many of the big European resorts are on global passes such as Epic or Ikon and many Americans don’t need lift tickets) they will gladly add this in to the rate and it stills plays as all-inclusive since you know in advance and pay the chalet company.

It’s also worth noting that in general, rentals and especially private guides are significantly cheap in Europe than the U.S. Oxygene is one of the largest ski schools in France with English instructors and operates at 15 of the nation’s the biggest resorts. When I booked last winter in Meribel they got about $600 for a full day private. The priciest resorts in the U.S. get $1400-ish, and in 2023 ski website peakrankings.com wrote that over 25 North American resorts now get over $1,000. Deer Valley had highest-season pricing of $1,470 last winter, and that’s not likely to drop when they announce new rates.

Why share a pool or gym with hotel guests when you can have your own? This is Chalet Machapucare in ... [+] Val d'Isere, which just won "Best Chalet in France."

It’s literally less than half the price in Europe, and rentals and lift tickets are also significantly cheaper. Even the massages cost less, and right now the dollar is strong against the Euro. In the U.S., the big resort operators have vertically integrated and run the instruction and rentals (and food), whereas in Europe it’s a competitive independent market with multiple players. And the on-mountain dining for lunch is dramatically better across the board, better by a wide margin than even the fanciest resorts in this country, just no comparison.

But on top of that, companies like Purple get extra discounts and when they book your lessons or rentals or lift tickets, they are even cheaper.

I like Purple in particular because a big part of the chalet experience is the food, and the company has strict rules for experience in top restaurants and have won major awards in the UK for their chalet chefs. This is not a seasonal ski bum short order cook—when our chef made shasuka for breakfast one day, it was the best I’ve ever had, and it’s a dish I’ve had around the world. I asked him how he learned to make it so well and he told me it was when he was working in London for Israeli-born chef Yotam Ottolenghi, one of the most acclaimed restaurateurs and cookbook authors in the world.

I’ve personally done chalet vacations in France twice and both times the food was excellent—on the off night we went to a Michelin-starred restaurant and it felt like a letdown. They send questionnaires in advance and can cater to any special diets and will make special occasion meals if you want.

There is also a lot of advance organizing if you want things like spa services, instruction and a reservation on your free night, and Purple has an excellent concierge to handle this. They are probably the company in this space most devoted to focusing on the U.S. market. Their chalets are primarily in Meribel and Courchevel, both part of the world’s largest interconnected ski resort, Trois Vallees. They also operate in Val d’Isere, which connects with Tignes to form the gigantic Espace Killy mega-resort, also one of the world’s biggest ski areas.

For the level of luxury provided, the value proposition is almost impossible to beat, and it crushes luxury hotels at the same level. Put 12 people (it holds 15) in the recently completely renovated Chalet Iona in Meribel in mid-March and it costs less than $3000 per person for the entire week, including all food and drink. You’d pay more just for a mid-level ski-in/out hotel room in many places, and that comes with nothing. I just priced out a guided ski week in Italy for six people staying at mid-range 3 and 4-star (Italian system, not Forbes) hotels, and the total price was about the same as renting a much higher-end Purple Chalet in Meribel for 10 people—and Itay doesn’t include all meals or any drinks. Believe me, free flowing champagne, carefully curated wines and craft cocktails for 10 people on a ski week can add up pretty fast if it’s extra.

There is also a camaraderie aspect that cannot be beat, as you can have your friends, family or both all under one roof, eating gourmet dinners at a giant table, playing cards, enjoying the spa facilities or chatting by the fire. There’s nothing to think about or worry about and the experience is just liberating—this is why they call it vacation.

Guided Trips

The Dolomites offer some of the best scenery in all of skiing, and Dolomite Mountains can guide you ... [+] through the massively interconnected ski area, the world's second largest.

There are a number of specialty ski travel tour operators offering both custom private and scheduled group ski trips. These typically combine lodging, lift tickets, a ski guide/instructor, transfers and most meals. You can do these privately for your group, or more economically as part of a scheduled group trip with strangers. You will likely spend a little more out of pocket along the way than on some of the other all-inclusive options.

One of the very best destinations to do these kinds of trips is Italy’s Dolomites, home to 12 adjacent resorts which form Dolomiti Superski, by most measures the second largest interconnected ski experience in the world, with a single lift ticket covering 746 miles of trails. The system connects many charming Italian mountain towns, combining to offer a stunning array of lodging and dining options at all price points, from budget to the likes of the Aman Rosa Alpina and Relais & Chateaux and Michelin-starred standout La Perla. For this reason, just about anyone who offers packaged guided ski trips does it in the Dolomites.

Alpine Adventures , America’s leading high-end specialty ski and snowboard travel company, offers a March guided trip with 7-days of skiing in the Dolomites and a 3-day post-ski visit to Venice, one of the world’s dream destinations—much less crowded and more authentic in winter (Venice is the best flight gateway for the Dolomites so you’d probably begin and end there anyway). While this trip is escorted, the skiing is not guided, but then most ski trips are not guided. Most meals, an upscale hotel in Venice, water taxi transfers and many more extras are included, from $2,149 per person.

The top local ski tour specialist is Dolomite Mountains , based here but focused on the American market. They offer a variety of guided English-speaking nearly all-inclusive weeklong ski tours around the region, including all lodging, breakfasts, most dinners, local transport, guides and luggage transfers. The only scheduled group option is the Dolomites Ski Safari , 6-nights and 7-days with 5-days of skiing guided by one of Italy’s superb UIAGM/IFMGA Professional Mountain Guides, a much higher level of certification than is required in this country. There are four scheduled group trips each season, from around $4,800 per person. These can also be booked as private trips, and Dolomites Mountains offers a variety of private and luxury guided trips, including off-piste weeklong alpine touring (AT) options and a food-centric “Gourmet Ski Safari.”

Ski.com is another large specialty travel company for winter sports, and they offer two annual guided trips to Japan’s Hokkaido , arguably the most desirable ski destination on earth, and home to the world’s best snow. Because there are several ski areas that require shuttling to and the language and culture can be confusing, having an English-speaking ski and tour guide for skiing Japan is especially helpful, and that is included. The trip starts at $4,181 per person but omits most meals and other extras. I have traveled with both Alpine Adventures and Dolomite Mountains above and personally heartily recommend them, but I do not have experience with Ski.com, though I have skied a few times in Japan, and it is awesome.

Alta is a legendary ski resort, best known for its deep powder and some of the best snow conditions ... [+] in the world.

Alta is a pilgrimage spot, one of the country’s most coveted destinations for skiers—but not snowboarders, as it is one of three remaining major resorts that bans them. For many it’s a day area since there is so little lodging here, but with a unique European aesthetic and no real town, what lodging it does have skews towards all-inclusive. Both the classic Alta Lodge and equally classic Gold Miner’s Daughter defy industry convention and offer lodging packages that include breakfasts and dinners daily, and the Gold Miner’s Daughter even throws in an après ski bar spread.

These don’t include lift tickets (Alta is on the Ikon pass) but since there is little else to spend money on at the base of Alta, it’s about the most affordable resort-based mostly-inclusive option in the country—and Alta is a true top tier resort.

Alta Lodge is also famous for its instruction packages, collectively called “Ski Adventures,” and this is another all-inclusive wrinkle. These add both rental gear and instruction to the food and board packages, and options include Performance Ski Camps (advanced to experts), Powder Tracks (powder skiing), Breakthrough Camp (intermediate to advanced), Women’s Skill Camp, Intermediate to Advanced Women’s Ski Camp and Advanced to Expert Women’s Ski Camp.

Luxury Dude Ranches

There is the idea of “all-inclusive” and then there is the reality, and it simply does not get any more inclusive than at the best dude ranches, including the Forbes 5-Star Ranch at Rock Creek and the acclaimed Relais & Chateaux Forbes 4-Star Triple Creek Ranch , both near Missoula, MT. These places go beyond amazing food and open bars and add things no one else does, such as all rental gear and even ski clothing—you could go without packing anything.

Luxury dude ranches are almost all run as all-inclusives, and one of the very best, Montana's Ranch ... [+] at Rock Creek has downhill skiing.

There’s opulent lodging, usually in private cabins, standout cuisine, top shelf wine and spirits, and a laundry list of included activities such as shooting, fishing, skating, yoga, horseback riding, fat tire snow biking and snowmobiling. They also have enormous trail networks for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and most uniquely, each ranch partners with a sizable hidden gem local resort, Discovery Mountain (Rock Creek) and Lost Trail Powder Mountain (Triple Creek). Both include lift tickets, private transfers to and from the mountain, and send skiers with gourmet packed lunches (or cook a delicious meal right in the ski resort parking lot). These are both among the nation’s very best luxury resorts of any kind, but winter is off season, in a big way.

Similar over the top pampering can be found at Wyoming’s 30,000-acre Brush Creek Ranch , which includes the Forbes 5-Star Magee Homestead and has its own private ski resort onsite, Green Mountain. It is limited to a dozen skiers and snowboarders daily, with a yurt for lunch and snowcat for lifts. Brush Creek also has its own distillery, brewery and goat cheese creamery. There are just 33 units for 50 miles of hiking and snowshoe trails, plus just about every cold-weather activity imaginable.

Vermont’s Forbes 5-Star Twin Farms is not a dude ranch, but operates in sort of the same way, with everything you can imagine included, and an even higher emphasis on gourmet cuisine and wine, plus cooking lessons on top of all the other activities. They used to have their own onsite mini-ski resort but shut the lifts and now take you up to the top of every run on a special snowmobile trailer, a unique “chauffeured skiing” I’ve never seen elsewhere. The mountain has six trails, and skiing here is more of an activity than a reason to visit, especially popular with first-timers giving it a spontaneous try, since it is so private, instruction is also included, and the resort stocks a full inventory of loaner alpine and alpine touring gear. I’ve been a few times, and this is easily one of the best resorts in the world. Winter is also off-season here.

Why settle for a hotel on your ski vacation when you can have your own cabin at Lone Mountain Ranch, ... [+] located at the Big Sky ski resort.

Lone Mountain Ranch is a luxurious property that is not as tony as the ones above but is unique in that it is the only dude ranch located at a major ski resort in the U.S, and by major, I mean Big Sky, Montana , the second largest in the country and currently the hottest. Lone Mountain offers all-inclusive packages with dining (but not drinks), lodging and onsite activities, including the nation’s largest resort cross-country trail system. It provides free shuttle service for guests to and from the lifts, though lift tickets are not included. It’s a novel way to do a fairly inclusive ski vacation at a major resort with Old West flair, a two-for-one experience that I wrote about in detail earlier this year here at Forbes .

Lodge-Based Skiing

Alaska's Todrillo Mountain Lodge is one of the world's top heli-skiing destinations—and ... [+] all-inclusive

Most skiers and snowboarders have heard of heli-skiing and sno-cat skiing, but few make the leap to place these in the all-inclusive category. However, the majority in North America (the rest of the world does more day trip heli) are based at dedicated and often remote lodges with all meals, often adult beverages, gear, and guiding included, along with safety gear, ideally inflatable avalanche backpacks.

The biggest and best-known operator is Canadian Mountain Holidays, CMH , with multiple lodges in 11 destinations in Northwest Canada. There are lots of options in Alaska as well, and the most highly regarded is probably Todrillo Mountain Lodge , co-owned by Olympic medalist Tommy Moe, which uniquely takes advantage of the very long daylight to offer combination spring heli-skiing and world-class King salmon fly fishing trips.

Nevada? Yes, Ruby Mountain heli-skiing is one of the industry's best-kept secrets—and all-inclusive

If you are a first timer dreaming of trying heli-skiing, I highly recommend Ruby Mountain Heli in Elko, NV, with 200,000 skiable acres. The oldest operator in this country, they have shorter and more affordable 3-day packages, are the easiest to get to, and have terrain for all abilities, including that better suited for first-time heli-skiers, as well as a sno-cats for back-up in bad flying weather. The ranch house feels like staying at someone’s home, complete with hearty home cooked meals, and it has a great vibe.

Top Seven Ski Resorts in Russia

W hile you may be tempted to use winter as an excuse to hibernate, it’s a great time to improve your fitness through exhilarating winter sports like downhill skiing. Russia’s ski industry has been booming ever since Russia hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics and offers up a number of epic ski resorts in places like the Northern Caucasus.

Russia of course shares the same winter season as Europe and North America, offering up fresh powder usually between December and April. Whether you want to tackle Mount Elbrus , Europe’s tallest peak, or simply wish to learn the basics of skiing, we thought we’d introduce you to the best ski resorts in Russia.

So get ready to engage your core and shed some of that added holiday weight by booking your own Russia family vacation package and checking out some of these great Russian ski slopes.

Best ski resorts in Russia

KANT Sports Club or Nagornaya

If you live in Moscow and want to go skiing or snowboarding, then you just can’t miss the “KANT” ski center in the southern part of the capital. Just 20 minutes from the Red Square, they’re easily Moscow’s most accessible ski slopes and perfect for travelers who are limited on time.

There are numerous trails, with a total length of 3.5 kilometers. Trail lengths range from 80m to 350m, with 6 available lifts. There is an onsite sporting goods store and tubing facilities. KANT’s slopes are actually found on an artificial hill just five minutes from Nagornaya metro station, which is why locals nicknamed the slopes Nagornaya.

Skilled skiers can choose the “Freeride” marked trails to practice your skills and there is a trail for cross-country skiing as well as a snowboard park.

Stepanovo Ski Resort

Stepanovo is a small ski resort located in the Dmitrovo district. There are 5 trails, of which a few are considered spacious and comfortable “green” trails for beginners. The total length of the two trails is more than one kilometer.

Stepanovo is also convenient because you can see the surrounding slopes at a glance. If you are skiing together as a family or as a corporate function, you will be within sight of each other. Moreover, there are not only “green” slopes, but also technically difficult slopes if you have more advanced skills. The snow park has a rental office, a school with instructors, and a storage room.

Stepanovo offers up some of the longest runs in the Moscow region, with beginners finding the runs to be some of the most comfortable. Hotels in the area offer additional ski schools and saunas for relaxing after a day on the slopes.

Best ski resorts in Russia

Sorochany Ski Area

Offering up ten trails and five lifts, the Sorochany Ski Area mainly caters to advanced skiers, but there are suitable trails for younger individuals and beginners. The Sorochany Ski Area is situated roughly 60km from Moscow, making it a great day-trip skiing destination.

You can maximize your time skiing due to the fact the slopes are lit up at night until around 2-3AM. They also have snow making facilities which means you’ll have fresh powder even when Mother Nature isn’t cooperating.  You can expect longer trails here than those found closer to Moscow.

The Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort

Situated along the Aibga Ridge of the Western Caucasus, Rosa Khutor was brought to the world’s attention when it hosted alpine skiing events during the 2014 Winter Olympics . It has a long ski season, offering up around 140 days of skiing annually and is the largest of the four Krasnaya Polyana ski resorts.

Rosa Khutor is popular with both skiers and snowboarders, with three different terrain parks to choose from. There are roughly 90km of slopes which are serviced by 26 lifts. You also get to ride the Olympic gondola to reach the Olympic Village where the ski runs start. You can tackle competition runs, beginner and intermediate runs, or the off-piste area.

You’ll also find a ski and snowboard school which offers classes for young children, as well as dining, shopping, and ice skating opportunities.

Cheget Ski Resort

Also located within the Caucasus Mountains near Mount Elbrus is the Cheget Ski Resort. With a peak elevation of 3260, it offers skiers a challenging high altitude location where 20km of trails welcome them. Cheget also usually offers an extended ski season running from around mid-October to mid-May.

While most of Cheget’s ski trails are geared towards advanced and expert skiers, there is one green run that is suitable for less-skilled skiers. Cheget’s black run is a true challenge, and makes for a top location where skiers train. There have been a number of international ski competitions held here.

Metallurg-Magnitogorsk Ski Centre

Located near lake Bannoye in the southern Ural Mountains , the Metallurg-Magnitogorsk Ski Centre is a favorite of both skiers and snowboarders. The slopes are enveloped by beautiful forests and offer 7km of trails along with a 60m half-pipe with 16° decline.

Because this is one of Russia’s newest ski areas, it sports new technology like its 1700m long speed elevator which can accommodate nearly 3,000 skiers every hour. Skiers also have access to luggage lockers, first-aid, and ski repair on site.

Top Russian Ski Resorts

Gazprom Mountain Resort

You know a ski resort must be good when it gets the tick of approval from the Russian President. Gazprom Mountain Resort is said to be the ski resort of choice for Vladimir Putin and is actually partially government-owned.

It should come as no surprise that Gazprom Mountain Resort is one of Russia’s most exclusive ski resorts and trips don’t come cheap. However, the experience is worth it, with 21km of beautiful trails winding through beech forests and 14 state of the art lifts that cut down on transport time between runs. Gazprom hosted the cross-country skiing and biathlon competitions during the Sochi Olympics of 2014.
