Colin Hay at Work on Tour With Rick Springfield, John Waite

colin hay tour 2022

Colin Hay has a big 2022 year planned in support of his new album, Now and the Evermore . He’s touring as Men at Work, along with such fellow ’80s music stars as Rick Springfield and John Waite. The album arrived March 18 via Lazy Eye/Compass Records.

Following that tour, Hay will resume touring with Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band.

“‘Now and the Evermore’ is unashamedly inspired by the majesty of The Beatles, and the gift they gave us all,” says Hay. “Having Ringo play on the track is more than icing on the cake. When I listen to it, it transports me back to when I thought I had all the time in the world.”

Listen to the title track

Written and recorded in Hay ’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles, the collection is a defiantly joyful celebration of life and love, one that insists on finding silver linings and reasons to smile. The music is vibrant and animated, brimming with fanciful melodies and lush orchestration. Hay’s performances, with that familiar voice, draw on vintage pop charm, pub rock, and folk.

In 2021, Hay released a covers album,  I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself .

Born in Scotland, Hay moved with his family as a teenager to Australia, where he first came to international fame with seminal ’80s hitmakers Men At Work.

While the band would reach the heights of stardom—they took home a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and sold more than 30 million records worldwide on the strength of #1 singles like “Who Can It Be Now?” and “Down Under”—by 1985, they’d called it quits and gone their separate ways.

Hay released his solo debut the following year and, over the course of the next three-and-a-half decades, went on to record twelve more critically acclaimed studio albums that would help establish him as one of his generation’s most hardworking and reliable craftsmen.

Hay turned 69 on June 29.

Rick Springfield, Men at Work and John Waite Are Ready for ‘Incredible’ Tour

Rick Springfield  and Men at Work are  joining forces this summer for an 18-city tour featuring special guest John Waite . All involved say it's going to be an "incredible" run.

The Australian rocker invited UCR to his house in Santa Barbara, where he shared a number of humorous anecdotes from his career. Springfield was joined by Waite and Men at Work's Colin Hay , and plenty of lighthearted banter and the occasional jab ensued.

The summer dates will feature an evening full of MTV -driven hits that scaled the charts time and time again. During the conversation, the three rockers detailed what fans can expect while also sharing some individual updates on projects they have coming up.

This tour is going to be a lot of fun, it seems. What are you all looking forward to? Colin Hay: I'm looking forward to making some loud noises. You know, coming out on stage and seeing big crowds and seeing the other bands is always really good. I'm not thinking, "Oh, I've got to do the whole night myself." It's really good.

Rick Springfield: Yeah, if people show up, it's you. And if they don't show up, it's their fault. [Laughs]

John Waite: There's going to be a stampede of people.

Springfield: There will.

Waite: But they're all going to be leaving. [Laughs]

Springfield: We play very loud. No, it's great. It's great to share a bill, because in a way, you're kind of competing. They were great and you want to be at least as good. So it ups your game. Especially if it's guys you like, which we like each other so far. Once we get on the road, that may change completely. But so far, so good.

It seems like you all have new music that's either done and coming out or on the way.

Waite: I've got a new EP called Anything [on the way] that's very upbeat. I think I owe it to people [because of] the times that we've lived through. I made Wooden Heart  [the three-volume acoustic anthology] when the world was kind of in a dark place with the COVID thing. The new EP is four songs, and they are songs I've had for a while. I recut a lot of songs on the back of the Wooden Heart release, and we're just making an electric album. But making electric music is really difficult, because it can be cliche almost immediately. You find yourself being rock and roll, or you're not doing something, because it's cliche. It becomes very self-conscious. It took me a while to take a run at four songs. They're really good songs. I'm quite proud of them. It will be out in about a month, hard copy in the stores, Target all over America.

Springfield: We have a second Red Locusts [featuring Matt and Gregg Bissonette ] album actually ready to go. We haven't mixed it yet. But once we started, we couldn't stop. It's more Beatle -y stuff. But I have a new record that I've almost finished that is very, very different for me. Like John was saying, it's very up. I don't know how to describe it. It's very hard to describe your own music, but it's hooks, which I kind of center every song on. And it's got weird production. I don't know. You'll just have to listen. You actually have to buy it and find out. Because there will be one copy for sale for $1 million.

Hay: I've got a new record that just came out. It's called Now and the Evermore . It was a great moment for me, having Ringo [Starr] play on the title track. I finished the song, and when I was messing around with the idea for the new song, I always imagined him playing on it for some reason. Then I thought, "Well, I'll just ask him."

Colin, fans will get to hear these Men at Work songs for the first time in a good while. How do you look back on the original era when the band was making those albums?

Hay: Well, you know, the initial band and the people who were in it wasn't really destined to stand the test of time. But the music has, which I'm very grateful for. You know, the music keeps resonating over the decades. I play the songs with the current band that I have at the moment, and everyone responds to it in the same way that they always have. You know, you can't really tell if your music has any kind of timeless quality to it unless a certain amount of time goes by. I love playing those songs. I always love playing them and I still do. I've made a lot of records since then, but I'm happy to go out on this tour and just play Men at Work material, because it's incredible to play and I love playing the songs. The audiences seem to love it as well.

Springfield: It's those songs, too, that enable us to [do something like this].

Waite: Well, it's the voice that's still going, too.

Hay: Speaking of voices!

Waite: The thing that we've all got, I think, is a very different vocal presence. You couldn't imagine anybody else singing Men at Work songs but Colin.

Springfield: I'm going to give it a shot.

Waite: And being the writer, it kind of corners the market on who is going to put Men at Work back together.

Hay: Thank God for that! [Laughs]

Springfield: It's like, Little River Band is not Little River Band anymore. At least we are the ones.

Waite: Yeah, I mean, if you're the singer, you hold the key to it. It's terrible stuff, but it's true. Bands always break up because the drummer always wants to be the singer.

Springfield: I have written a song! [Laughs]

Waite: Yeah, you know, it's always the same way!

Hay: Spinal Tap is very close to it.

Springfield: It's frighteningly close to reality.

Waite: It doesn't matter how calm or nice you are. There's always the same problems in every band. If it isn't somebody else making the problem, it's you. You know, there's like a Spinal Tap , natural progression in every rock band. [Laughs]

Springfield: I've been both the identifier of the problem and the problem.

Watch Men at Work's 'Who Can It Be Now?' Video

John, you've been revisiting your catalog of songs with the Wooden Heart series, as you mentioned earlier. What did you glean from that whole exercise?

Springfield: Let me take that one. [Laughs]

Waite: I always said that if you can play it on the acoustic without a band and without the volume, it's a good song. You know, if it stands up in a folk club, it's going to kill 'em in a stadium. The Wooden Heart thing, I went back and looked at the most evolved songs. I even did "Isn’t It Time," the Babys song, which had brass, a full orchestra, African American backup singers and a rock band, the Babys. I did it with one guitar and a vocal. It shows you the strength of the song. But I was only interested in the songs that were lyric-driven or unusual pieces of music. ... There was enough songs to make it a really interesting triple album.

Rick, you've had an association with Sammy Hagar for a lot of years now. What's one of your favorite Sammy stories from over the years?

Springfield: Nothing I can probably say on camera. [Laughs] You know, Sammy's always been very helpful. When I first started having some hits, he helped me pull together a PA system and lights for a show I did here. He's always been very supportive. You know, we've stayed in touch, and when he had this rum deal, I thought, "Why not?" We have a rum together called Beach Bar Rum, and I'm not plugging it or anything, I'm just saying, because you brought it up. It's awesome.

Hay: You're in the rum business?

Springfield: Yeah, Beach Bar Rum. It’s amazing. Do we have any we can share with our friends? Let's give John some rum.

Waite: No, no. The pants are staying on, my friend.

Making music during the MTV era, what were some of the things that went wrong as you were doing videos?

Hay: We were doing a video for a song called " High Wire " many years ago. We employed the services of a circus. In the background, there was a camel and the camel's handler. I think the camel's handler was not a very nice person and had perhaps abused the animals. So he was distracted by the camera and what we were shooting. The camel noticed this and picked him up by the shoulders and just started shaking him around. You can see that in the video.

Springfield: What prompted you to have a camel in the video?

Hay: Well, we had the whole circus. That's what sprang to mind.

Springfield: I was doing a shoot for a video in England for a song called " Don’t Walk Away ." I had this great idea. We were on the beach, down in Brighton, I guess it was. I said, "I'm going to lie down in the water, and then we'll reverse it and I'll come up out of the water dry." So we used it, but I did it and then I came up and I see this building, like on the coast, and I go, "What's that?" They said, "It's a nuclear power station!" I went, "Oh! I might have just bathed myself in nuclear waste."

Waite: I wrote a song called "In Dreams" with Mark Spiro for a Quentin Tarantino movie called True Romance . The director wanted to shoot the video. Tony Scott. I met Tony at Monument Valley, and he took me up in a helicopter and dropped me on top of a mesa. It was like 6,000 feet up, and I'm scared of heights. They drop me from the helicopter on top of this thing and put a wire cable up my leg and nailed me to the top of this thing. Then they were dive-bombing me. You can see the curvature of the earth, it's that high. It's Tony Scott and it's a beautiful, fantastic movie. I'm very proud of having a song in it. I love Tony, and he was a really lovely guy. I really fell in love with the guy immediately. He was just a great guy and a great talent. Then he took me in the helicopter. I mean, you have to get off this mesa because of the updraft. You went to the edge in a helicopter, and then he goes straight down, so you don't get blown back. I'm scared of heights, right? I'm in the back with Tony Scott. Then he's got me hanging out of the helicopter on straps singing the song, as you do.

EVENT INFORMATION

Colin Hay is not someone who can be “DVR’ed” or timeshifted. He must be seen live to fully appreciate the hi-definition brilliance and dynamic range of his skills . – Inner Edge Music CA Few performers can hold an audience hostage with a relatable yarn like Colin Hay can. These intermissions between songs are the comic relief that offsets the brilliance of his musicality. There’s a sense of reckoning and realisation in each track that cuts deeply but leaves audiences feeling strangely optimistic.     The former front man of seminal 80s outfit  Men at Work  (known for the iconic Aussie anthem ‘Down Under’) has released fifteen critically acclaimed albums over the course of three-and-a-half decades. During his remarkable solo career, Hay’s frequent appearances at LA’s Largo club helped garner him a legion of fans in the entertainment world. Among them was actor/director Zach Braff, who called his mix of heartfelt song writing and hilarious storytelling “one of the most amazing things I had ever seen.” Braff went on to feature Hay’s music prominently in the GRAMMY-winning soundtrack for  Garden State  and invited him to appear as himself on the hit series  Scrubs,  which helped introduce his music to a whole new generation of listeners.    More recently Hay has been busy touring the US with  Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band  (the fifth time he has gone out globally with Ringo Starr) but is set to grace Australian audiences with a highly anticipated solo jaunt (the first solo tour Down Under in years). Die-hard fans will tell you that these solo shows are where his storytelling truly shines.   Colin Hay will hit Australia in November to give us a taste of his new album.   Described by  American Songwriter  as  “an album for the ages”,  Hay’s latest body of work,  Now And The Evermore,  has been praised by reviewers for embodying all the elements of good storytelling and artistry.    “ The first thing you’ll hear on  Now And The Evermore , is a drum fill played by Ringo Starr. This is terribly exciting, because for me growing up, there was The Beatles, and then there was everybody else. Some days I think we’re still trying to make something that’s as close as possible to “Rubber Soul” when their creative wellspring was starting to bubble over.  With this new record, I tried to make it sound as beautiful as I could. Sometimes beauty hurts, but it’s a good pain.”   –  Colin Hay

And it is that unique blend of cultural exposure–Hay’s parents emigrated from Scotland to Australia when he was a teenager–that lends itself to Hay’s one-of-a-kind vocals. His is a voice that can be full of pain and sorrow, express desire, and offer tepid hope–sometimes in the same song. And no matter the tempo, Hay’s songs are always pensive in a way that makes you think about your own life and what you want from it.  – The Music Universe

Recent tour reviews

Colin is the consummate entertainer - such a presence on stage, with his self-deprecating, cheeky Scottish humour!

The band were top notch musicians and the sound in the Recital Centre was superb. You can tell I thought it was a great concert!

He played a wide range of songs from new and old, and of course, did the big hits.

We had a wonderful night - and great value, playing for around 2 and a half hours straight through.

Thank you Colin!

Great show. Highly recommended if you like a show with melancholy music. Not much upbeat music in the show but Colin lightens it up with his stories between songs. If not a musician, he would have been a wonderful comedian. Very entertaining show and will see him again should he come through our area in the future.

I thought Colin Hay put on a really uplifting show, interspersing his own and Men at Work's songs with anecdotes and tales of his career. Just him and his guitar on the stage; everyone in the crowd singing along and having a great time.

COLIN HAY ROLLS OUT SPRING TOUR, TAPS RINGO STARR FOR NEW ALBUM

COLIN HAY ROLLS OUT SPRING TOUR, TAPS RINGO STARR FOR NEW ALBUM

Getty Images

Men At Work leader Colin Hay has just rolled out a 36-date summer run in support of his upcoming album, Now And The Evermore , due out on March 18th. Hay, who'll be back on tour later this spring with Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band , has enlisted the legendary Beatles drummer for the album's first single and title track.

Hay, who wrote all of Men At Work's greatest hits — including “Who Can It Be Now?,” “Down Under,” and “Overkill” — kicks off the jaunt on March 18th in Fort Collins, Colorado at The Lincoln Theater and winds the trek down on May 12th in Scottsdale, Arizona at Virginia G. Piper Theater.

Hay explained in the album's announcement: “(The song) 'Now And The Evermore' is a reminder to myself, to make the most of what time I have left walking around on top of the planet. When I listen to it, it transports me back to when I thought I had all the time in the world. It is a song which is unashamedly inspired by the majesty of The Beatles, and the gift they gave us all. Having Ringo Starr play on the track is more than icing on the cake.”

Colin Hay, who still performs select dates under the Men At Work moniker, says that there is clearly a difference between his solo gigs and “group” concerts: “We play between. . . between 1,000 and 10,000 people would come and see our show depending on where it is. So, it's still really quite good. So, that's quite big for me. That's a big tour. My solo tours are smaller, but it's a different kind of show. I tell a lot of stories usually, if I feel like it. I think the audience will like it, and sing songs. That's really my natural game. I'd been doing that since before I was in Men At Work.”

Live Review and Photo Gallery: Colin Hay at Thalia Hall • Chicago

Colin Hay at Thalia Hall, Chicago, IL

Saturday, March 26, 2022

Review by Jeff Elbel

Photos by Philamonjaro

Even more welcome to many music lovers than the first robin of spring is the return of Colin Hay to touring as a solo acoustic juggernaut. The erstwhile Men at Work bandleader is now well established as a captivating songsmith and performer under his own name, with 15 solo albums to his credit since 1987. Hay could easily take a step to the side and hold audiences’ attention as a stand-up comic or raconteur as well, but that would be a loss for fans of his rough-hewn but still-supple tenor and prodigious skill as a guitarist. In addition to his multiplatinum-selling and Grammy-winning pop pedigree, those assets have made Hay a coveted sideman playing Beatles songs for old his hero and friend Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band through the peak touring season during the summer months.

After writing the title track for Starr’s 2019 album What’s My Name, Starr returned the favor by playing drums on the nostalgic and winsome title track to Hay’s latest LP Now and the Evermore . That song and other new confections were featured alongside old favorites during Saturday night’s return visit to Thalia Hall.

Hay danced his way into the spotlight, wearing blue jeans, a dark blazer, a striped vest, and an Eiffel Tower t-shirt. He immediately began cracking jokes about club-dancing stereotypes, but soon pivoted toward gratitude for being able to stand before a room full of his fans once again. “I’m going to try to distract you from a malevolent world for a couple of hours,” he said, recalling pandemic fears and inferring the current brutality in Ukraine. Hay recalled the ennui and isolation of covid lockdown that led to his 2021 covers album I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself . He then performed the title track, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and released as a single by Dusty Springfield in 1964. Hay’s own “Beautiful World” followed, described as an attempt to ritualize the simple things in life. “They’re often the best,” said Hay. Released on 2002’s Company of Strangers album, the song may not have been a chart-topper, but to Hay’s devoted crowd it was clearly a familiar favorite.

With its jaunty rockabilly bounce, Hay said he imagined the new song “A Man Without a Name” being sung by Elvis Presley and accompanied by the King of Rock and Roll’s signature hip-swinging poses. Hay drew cheers for demonstrating those steps during the song. Another new song “Starfish and Unicorns” was given emotional depth by Hay’s stories of returning to see his aging and beloved parents in Melbourne, Australia. He also described scattering his parents’ ashes with his brother and sister, connecting to imagery within the song’s picturesque and melancholy acoustic folk. “Maggie” was another evocative song based upon memories of Hay’s first love, a once-bright spark whose life unraveled and ended in tragedy.

The mood brightened with the title cut “Now and the Evermore” and Hay’s self-deprecating tales of interacting with Starr. Although Hay was a gracious host intent on fostering rapport with the crowd, he expected the courtesy to be returned. Before playing the song, Hay gently chastised a woman in the crowd who had been glued to her cell phone with the screen at full brightness. “I’m like a deer in the headlights,” he said, gaping wide-eyed in jest.

Soon after came a cover of another hero, when Hay performed Ray Davies’ pop masterpiece “Waterloo Sunset” by the Kinks. Hay described the experience of having the then-new song etched into memory at age 14. He heard it while crossing the gangplank onto the boat that would take his family on a four-week journey as they emigrated from Scotland to Australia.

Hay revealed a bit of his process when describing the origin of new character sketch “Agatha Bell.” Built around a nimble and catchy acoustic guitar riff, Hay said that he free-associated the name and then spent time pondering what the character was like. The song seems like the tale of a romantic but unlucky serial widow, but Hay revealed his creation’s shadowy secret. “She’s a killer,” he said.

Hay introduced the set’s first Men at Work chestnut with a story about his boyhood friend and bandmate Greg Ham, who famously played saxophone and flute for Men at Work’s best-known singles. Hay comically described trips taken by himself and Ham to the country, where they marveled at the intricacy of mundane nature under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Hay then described how the signature saxophone line to “Who Can it Be Now” began as a spookier guitar texture, like one that might be heard at a commercial break during TV’s Forensic Files . The familiar song’s performance was impressive for how effortlessly and agelessly Hay unfolded the melody and hit its stratospheric high notes. The same was soon shown to be true during “Overkill,” when Hay again demonstrated how impressively he had maintained his voice as his most unique instrument.

The Men at Work songs were undeniably fun, and Hay delighted at the background vocals sung in resonant harmony by the audience during the coda to “Who Can it Be Now.” For many, however, the proof of Hay’s staying power as a songwriter came with a spine-tingling performance of his nakedly emotional solo song “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You,” which was featured on the Garden State soundtrack. The set closed with another moving gem from Hay’s solo catalog, “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin.” Hay described writing the song a year following the termination of his recording contract in 1990 when he wondered how long it would take to scale the heights of success once again. “I had to ask myself a serious question,” Hay said. “If I never get back to those lofty peaks ever again, is playing at Thalia Hall on a Saturday night in Chicago … is that going to be good enough?” Fans cheered in support.

“And I realized, it’s really not,” Hay deadpanned to much laughter, followed by his own. Clocking at two hours and five minutes, the show closed with the song Hay said had been the best to him over the past 40 years. After performing an intimate acoustic version of Men at Work’s international number-one single “Down Under,” Hay offered warm thanks to his fans and patrons. Flashing the peace sign, he turned and gave a spinning step as he danced his way into the wings.

Live Review: Colin Hay @ Lincoln Theatre — 4/2/22

Live Review: Colin Hay @ Lincoln Theatre — 4/2/22

Who can it be now? Why, it’s Colin Hay, the bearded Scotsman famed for fronting the band Men at Work. With his signature dry sense of humor, Colin is well recognized when he’s on the stage, as was the case at the Lincoln Theatre in DC recently. But at home in the suburbs of Los Angeles, he’s gained quite a bit of anonymity — a far cry from when he arrived for the first time in New York City for he first time 40 years ago.

In 1982, Men at Work’s debut album, Business as Usual, hit the US album chart at No. 1 for 15 weeks, led by the success of the indomitable single “Down Under.” At the time, even in crowded NYC, frontman Hay was recognized everywhere he went, Colin reported. Now at home, he can be in a line of six people at the local CVS checkout and no one bats an eye when the store’s radio plays one of his signature songs. Although, he quipped wistfully, he might enjoy being recognized once in a while under those circumstances.

Well, as fickle a mistress she may be, fame still agrees with Colin Hay, who indeed performed three classic Men at Work songs at the Lincoln Theatre on April 2. Performing solo with his impressive set of guitars, Colin sang stripped down versions of “Down Under” (at the end of the set), “Who Can It Be Now?” (at about the two-thirds mark), and “Overkill” (sometime between the other two). And the audience was just as rapt and attentive for the rest of the set, dominated by Colin’s 2022 solo album, Now and the Evermore, and his 2021 pandemic lockdown covers record, I Just Don’t What to Do With Myself.

Colin topped the first third of the concert by playing the title track to Now and the Evermore, which features Ringo Starr playing drums on the album track. Throughout the might, Colin peppered the show with vignettes of admiration about Ringo, who recruited Hay for His All Starr Band back in 2003. The men have enjoyed a warm relationship since but Colin shared his disbelief still at playing on stage with the former Beatle, occasionally looking over his shoulder at the drummer during their recurring tours for Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band to ensure that he’s really there! Ringo, Colin supposed, doesn’t have the same challenges with fame.

Watch Colin Hay perform “Now and the Evermore” acoustically with Cecilia Noël (his wife) and San Miguel Perez on YouTube:

Hay’s recent songs packed a great deal of emotional power into stirring arrangements and quiet interludes. Delivered in his unmistakable warm voice, the songs occasionally struck a sad note, but it was a sadness of learned men, who recognize the value of time and friendship and dreams. Theses themes were evident in the new album’s “Sea of Always,” which Colin played at the midpoint of the show. The jaunty song celebrated opportunity after potential loss: “No one will come and save the day/ You are your own forgiver/ There’s really nothing in my way/ Why do I shake and shiver?” Colin presented the “sea of always” as time’s continued flow, and his welcoming tone suggested there was life still remaining beyond the lying and crying.

I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself received attention in the form of two very well-received covers — the title track, a cover of Dusty Springfield, to open the show and “Waterloo Sunset” by The Kinks also in the first half. Colin shared memories of first hearing such formative songs while in his father’s record shop in Scotland, and the poignancy of “Waterloo Sunset” stuck with him as he later heard it on the gangplank while boarding the ship that would emigrate the family to Australia. Colin’s rendition of the song was spare and affecting, and it endlessly delighted the crowd in the very full hall of the Lincoln Theatre.

Watch Colin Hay play “Waterloo Sunset” by The Kinks in a solo acoustic performance on YouTube:

As lovely and timeless as Colin’s songs and covers may be, the audience was truly there to see the man. Colin maybe could have pulled up a chair and chatted away for 90 minutes, and every soul in the theater would have been as fulfilled and pleased as if they just heard a jam-packed show. Once you get to know him or perhaps reacquaint yourself with him, Colin simply has that affect on you. He’s an earnest, optimisitic spirit who acknowledges that life sometimes kicks you when you are down. But he also suggests to you that you get back up, and carry on your way. He humorously referenced this attitude in an observation that he’ll keep making albums even if (the implication goes) they don’t achieve the massive sort of world-bending success they did 40 years ago.

And that’s OK. Because Colin Hay always still finds his audience, and that audience can count on their famous friend to sing some remarkable tunes and assure them we will all be OK here and now and in the evermore.

Catch Colin Hay on tour (including a somewhat DMV local show tonight at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts).
