In Flames and Kreator Announce 2024 Co-Headline Australian Tour

By W. Mackellar

Veteran metal outfits, Sweden’s In Flames and Germany’s Kreator , will head to Australia next year for a run of co-headlining tour dates. The tour – aptly dubbed ‘Klash of the Titans’ – will kick off in Adelaide on Tuesday, 13th February.

The bands will then move through Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney, and finish up at the Tivoli in Brisbane on Sunday, 18th February. Check out all the dates and details below, and you can sign up now for pre-sale access.

In Flames: ‘End The Transmission’

Swedish death metal band In Flames were in Australia earlier this year touring with Knot Fest – in Music Feeds ‘ review , Brenton Harris said the band was still “world-class”, but their setlist polarised fans. “There are just a lot of fans who’ll never get over them abandoning their roots,” Harris wrote, after observing that fans didn’t respond very warmly to the band’s newer material.

In Flames released a brand-new album Foregone just before Knot Fest. As for thrash heroes Kreator, the upcoming tour is the band’s first in Australia since 2017 . The band released a new album, Hate Über Alles, in 2022.

More Kreator

If you thought that the Australian tour announcements would be coming to an end or that the Machine Head and Fear Factory run would be the sole heavy music starter for 2023, this latest tour announcement proves you wrong on both counts.

In February 2024, Kreator and In Flames will bring their Klash Of The Titans co-headline tour to Australia.

The very best of European metal will see the two bands host a quick run of dates across the country, starting at Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall (Tuesday, 13 February) before heading to Melbourne’s Forum (14 February), the UC Refectory in Canberra (15 February), Sydney’s Enmore Theatre (17 February), and wraps up at Brisbane’s The Tivoli on Sunday, 18 February.

The 2024 Klash Of The Titans tour marks Kreator’s first Australian run since 2017. In Flames, on the other hand, last visited Australia in March 2023 for Knotfest and also opened for Megadeth . Their last headline tour down under was a co-headline event with Trivium in 2014.

“Are you guys ready?” In Flames asked in a Facebook post last night (22 October), accompanied by three Australian flags. “IN FLAMES & KREATOR coming to your shores…..”

The Early Bird pre-sale for the Klash Of The Titans tour opens on Wednesday, 25 October, at 9 am local time – sign up here to access your tickets early. The general sale starts on Friday, 27 October, at 9 am local time. You can find tickets via the Destroy All Lines website .

Witnessing Kreator’s headbanging brilliance in September 2017, The Music reviewer Brendan Crabb said that their show at the Manning Bar was “A suitably full-throttle display wildly embraced by the faithful; even in middle age, restraint really isn't a term in Kreator's vernacular.”

In Flames, promoting their February 2023 release Foregone , rocked the stage at Margaret Court Arena earlier this year, opening up for Megadeth. A Kill Your Stereo review concluded , “Swedish death metal has never sounded so good, and Margaret Court Arena has never sounded this loud.”

Words –  Richard Grimm Photos – Mitch

It’s Valentine’s Day in Melbourne and love is in the air. The love of fat meaty fucking riffs that is! Melbourne turns up in their blackest band tees and patch-covered vests for their long-awaited date with not one, but two titans of metal. Lined up around the block outside Melbourne’s iconic Forum theatre, you had to turn two corners to reach the final punters waiting to have their ears tenderly caressed by the sonic war thunder awaiting them. Inside we’re greeted by a massive backdrop of the in flames logo looming over the audience. I can overhear chatter from camps for both bands mentioning their excitement to see the other act for the first time. With the house lights fading down it was time for these two titans to grace the stage.

IN-FLAMES-The-Forum-melbourne-16-2-2024-everyday-metal--27

Loudspeakers begin to play a beautiful acoustic intro and stage lights flutter to elevate the mood. One by one In Flames take to the stage, bathed in applause. Then like an abrupt kick in the ribs, they blast into Foregone pt. 1. At the helm is Anders Friden in his peak form. The bloke is out here making recordings of his own voice sound amateurish and dispassionate in comparison to the stellar delivery he is giving tonight. The track moves out of In Flames signature style riffing into a meaty breakdown followed by an exchange of solos by Chris Broderick and Björn Gelotte . The former of which clearly carried all of the backline in on his own because swoly moly that man was yoked.

IN-FLAMES-The-Forum-melbourne-16-2-2024-everyday-metal--58

In Flames showed the kind of easy swagger in their performance that really only comes from years of experience. At the start of the second track Anders calls out to get the pit started and Melbourne honoured the request of our metaphorical lover with delight. Third track of the night ( everything’s gone ) was my favourite of the set and clearly some of the crowd agreed because around now we started to see our first few crowd surfers. Anders showed off some of his vocal range both in timbre and register and kept the crowd thoroughly engaged, hyping up every stop and drop and the ending riff was so filthy I had to take two showers when I got home.

IN-FLAMES-The-Forum-melbourne-16-2-2024-everyday-metal--46

After 6 songs, the band stops to let us catch our breath a little and Anders has a little banter with the crowd. “Maybe at 1am later on the streets,” he responds to the crowd demanding their participation in the sacred Australian party ritual known as the shoey and then lends some advice to someone in the front row. “This isn’t a rule, but you’re in the front row looking at a little screen. My suggestion to you, put the phone in your pocket and go into the circle pit. I promise it’ll be the most fun you can have”. Some advice that I felt compelled to follow later in the evening. Now obviously you can’t encourage people to go into the pit if there isn’t one so the Swedes provided by playing Food for the gods. Which had another highlight moment for me when the bridge riff hit with some gnarly pinch harmonics that forced me to make an audible “ugh”. I think this is a good moment to acknowledge whoever was doing the lighting for this show. I had a lot of mentions in my notes about stylistic choices they made that I felt really elevated the show. One particular choice being using the colours from the whoracle album art for the lights during food for the gods In flames are at the top of their game. My least favourite part of the set was when they finished with Take this life . Not because they played it poorly or because it’s not a good song because it certainly is. But it’s just a shame that song has had the most exposure because from what I saw these guys have so much more to offer and that song doesn’t even begin to scratch the depth of their talent as both songwriters and more importantly, performers.

IN-FLAMES-The-Forum-melbourne-16-2-2024-everyday-metal--15

Now it’s time for the intermission and Anders’ words rang in my head. I decided he was right, if I wanted to truly review the experience of this show I had to participate in it. So while the bands changed over I headed from the back of the room over to the pit. As I moved down, a drop curtain decorated with the band’s logo was raised to conceal the machinations of their oncoming performance.

The lights go down, and the curtain drops to reveal an extravagant stage design. Four figures in red cloth hang by their necks from the ceilings and the stage is winged on either side by more figures impaled on spikes. Behind the band, a large blow-up statue of the band’s mascot, Violent Mind, dominates the stage visuals. Kreator wastes zero time launching into the title track off their newest record, Hate Uber Alles and I’m treated to one of my absolute favourite tropes in large stage metal performances: double kicks with synced strobe lights. A trick that the band will continue to abuse throughout the show. As I say that you might be asking yourself, “won’t that get old after a while” and the answer to that is “fuck you, no it doesn’t, it’s rad as hell”. Singer Mille Petrozza commands the crowd with authority all night. He says jump, the crowd says how high. He gestures for a wall of death, the crowd splits. He says “crowd surf”, there’s people flying all over the place (I even saw a dud with a walking stick getting thrown in the air).

KREATOR-The-Forum-melbourne-16-2-2024-everyday-metal--36

A few songs deep and we hear some ominous funeral bells and fans familiar with the album gods of violence know what’s coming. Satan is real was played to perfection with guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö, shredding a beautiful red Ibanez destroyer, nailed his solos both here and throughout the evening. Giving off the impression that he couldn’t play a wrong note if he tried. When the final chord is played the crowd breaks into an impromptu chant “Kreator! Kreator! Kreator!”. If there was any doubt that the German thrashers had a following in Australia it should be erased from your mind at this moment. Kreator’s live rendition of Hordes of Chaos was also a highlight, effectively a summary of what it means to be metal with every type of mosh pit erupting at one point or another in the one song. After a stunning twelve song setlist, Kreator rounded out the night with Pleasure to kill and a call out for the last opportunity to participate in the wall of death.

KREATOR-The-Forum-melbourne-16-2-2024-everyday-metal--14

My final thoughts on the show come around to how much I appreciated the differences between In Flames and Kreator as I think they complimented each other well. In Flames had a more personable feel to their set whereas Kreator were much more theatrical. Having each band side by side like that really helped me to appreciate how a band works best when they play to their specific strengths and both bands on this bill did exactly that. If you ever get a chance to see either of these acts you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not snatching up tickets the second you can.

Huge thanks to the Forum Melbourne crew for having us and a special thanks to John Howarth for arranging media access.

GIG REVIEW: Kreator & In Flames – Sydney February 17th 2024

Enmore theatre - sydney, nsw.

Kreator

Yesterday night, The Enmore Theatre was witness to one of the most brutal nights that the legendary venue has ever seen: Klash of the Titans, with both heavyweights In Flames and Kreator in a co-headlining tour across Australia. I arrived in the venue 7.30pm, 15 minutes before the ticket said, and the venue was already semi-packed with eager metalheads, both young and old (the fact that this event was all ages was pretty awesome). But 20 minutes later, the Enmore Theatre was almost full with black t-shirts and beer-drinking fans. One of my first observations upon entering the venue was the excellent ventilation given the amount of people and that it was a really hot and humid day in Sydney, but while in the gig I never felt too hot or too cold. It was absolutely comfortable throughout.

At 8pm on the dot, the lights went out and the first notes of In Flames’ recorded intro were heard, prompting a generalised excitement among the attendees, and not long after, the legendary Swedish band burst into stage with ‘Foregone Pt.1’ , a really good opener song from their most recent release ‘Foregone’ , immediately creating a high-octane energy among everyone. Anders Friden (along with his characteristic flannel shirt and baseball hat) proved in seconds that he is a great frontman and vocalist. The band took advantage of the energy and chose the classic ‘Pinball Map’ as a 2nd song, and with this the first mosh pit of the night was created. This is a song that takes me swiftly and directly to my teenage years, so I enjoyed it thoroughly, and so did everyone else, as this was followed by the uber-catchy ‘Deliver Us’ and its Alternative Metal riffs and melodies. This one proved to be a very popular song among the fans, even though it is one of the biggest examples of In Flames’ more recent switch in sound towards a more commercial one. The band gave everyone a break with the next couple of songs that were a bit slower and chunky rather than fast and aggressive. This break effectively finished when the first notes of ‘Behind Space’ were heard. Now this was the classic In Flames that a lot of people were longing for, with this track behind a full 30 years old now, and the very first album track ever released by the band in their legendary ‘Lunar Strain’ from 1994. The 90s old-school vibes continued with ‘Food for the Gods’ and their extremely jumpy classic ‘Only for the Weak’ .

In Flames is a band that knows how to navigate their setlists seamlessly in order to represent a 30+ years career in less than 90 minutes. Now, the reality is that as a lot of people know, they have effectively shifted their sound from being a pillar of the Gothenburg Melo-Death scene, towards a very commercial Alt and Nu Metal one, and they have rarely gone back to that classic sound in the last 20 years of their existence. Personally, I discovered the band around 2002, right when ‘Reroute to Remain’ came out, and given my age, I also grew up listening to a lot of Nu Metal in the late 90s, so that era of the band remains my nostalgic favorite. My nostalgia thirst was quenched as soon as the first notes of ‘Cloud Connected’ were heard, and then followed by the awesomely whingy ‘The Quiet Place’ . Both these songs fully represent that era when the band went full Nu Metal, but I loved it, and from what I witnessed, so did most of the attendees yesterday. Another cut from their newest album followed, and then the very sing along anthem ‘Alias’ . This is a great song to listen to, excellent chorus line and slow and heavy riffs, it is also a bit longer than the rest of their songs, but I don’t think it worked too good in a live setting because of those reasons precisely. The last moments of the concert were coming with songs like ‘The Mirror’s Truth’ , and then their recent classic ‘Take This Life’ as a brutal closer. The band is excellent onstage, their sound was almost perfect and they always look like they are having a great time. Anders is a great frontman, definitely not looking the 50 years old of age he has, and bringing a somewhat awkward and shy persona that manages to come across as quite humble and genuinely thankful whenever he is speaking without music backing him. Even though this is a band that has drawn criticism for the already mentioned reasons, they have proved time and time again that they are still very relevant and a powerhouse in the worldwide Metal scene. As an older fan of the band of course I wished they could have played more songs from their 1997-2002 era, but I am not complaining as they delivered a healthy mix of songs from most of their releases and the energy they convey onstage is brilliant and their performances always on point. In Flames played for exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Beer and toilet break for everyone next, and given the scale of Kreator ’s stage, I thought the changeover was going to be longer, but I was surprised to see that just after 23 minutes or so, everything was ready for the German legends. At exactly 9.45 pm the first notes of Kreator ’s intro were heard, and with this the evident push of the mass of people in an attempt to get to the front and centre as soon as possible. The German heavyweights burst into stage shortly after with the title track from their most recent album ‘Hate Uber Alles’ , which proved to be an excellent way of opening, given the old-school vibes and aggression of this particular song. Seriously, this has become one of my favourite songs from the band’s catalogue, with a brutal chorus that repeats itself becoming heavier and more aggressive every time. Kreator ’s stage was awesome too, and although the impaled demons on the front looked a bit kooky and suburban Halloween-decoration-like, the demon-like Mascot of the band was shown awesomely as a huge towering inflatable with a lot of attention to detail to make it look super realistic. Kreator didn’t waste any time and immediately went on to play ‘People of the Lie’ from their 1990 classic ‘Coma of Souls’ , and with it the first of many walls of death, which sent a few good people effectively flying into the air. ‘Enemy of God’ was one of the favourite songs of the night, but for many, including me, the real treat came early in the form of ‘Betrayer’ , an uber-aggressive Thrash anthem from their 80s era. This was also the very first song I ever heard from the band when I was a teenager, so it held a special place in my heart.

The next few songs came from more recent releases, but with a band like Kreator this is not a bad thing. Kreator is without a doubt the biggest of the German Big 4, but personally, I think that today they play better music than even their American counterparts in the The Big 4. Kreator ’s more recent releases are just as awesome as their classic 80s and 90s stuff. Maybe they have gone a bit more melodic and harmony-led, but time after time they show they are masterful songwriters and Mille Petrozza an amazing frontman and vocalist. ‘Satan is Real’ , and ‘Hordes of Chaos’ proved this point right, as being some of the most popular songs of the night. The rest of the night came with a very good mix of old and new, with highlights being the almost-Power Metal anthem ‘Strongest of the Strong’ from their most recent album, and ‘Violent Revolution’ one of their newer classics that make almost every single setlist they play since it was released. The biggest and most dangerous mosh pits I have ever seen in this venue, multiple walls of death, hundreds of crowd surfers, chaos everywhere, this is what a legendary band like Kreator brought to Sydney on Saturday night, and absolutely everybody embraced it. The band finished their set with their true classic ‘Pleasure to Kill’ bringing some of the most crushing moments of the night and a very climactic finale with a massive wall of death. I knew Kreator were an awesome band, but their live performance exceeded all expectations and made me realize that these guys are on a different level of professionalism and quality, even after more than 40 years of existence.

It is not fair to compare both bands side to side, as they have led different careers and different styles. Both of them killed it, and both of them have been in my bucket list of live bands to watch since forever, but if I had to choose I would definitely stay with Kreator ’s performance. Everything about this band is what Metal is about for me, and they have proven time and time again that they are one of the biggest and best bands ever. Another thing that I consider important mentioning, is that I was extremely surprised (and saddened) to see that there was no local supports for this tour at all. I understand that this a double co-headlining tour, but given the time the Sydney gig finished (10.55pm), the addition of a local band could have been perfectly acceptable. Honestly, it is quite concerning that this could become a trend, as support for the local scenes is paramount in the creation of a healthy Metal scene, and the amount of exposure that smaller bands get with opening these kind of events is invaluable and golden for them. With that aside, this was an amazing evening, excellent quality from both bands and definitely one of the best co-headlining tours Australia has seen in recent years.

Kreator are a thrash metal band from Essen, Germany formed in 1982 who along the big three of the genre in Germany at the time (Destruction, Sodom and Tankard) helped to shape what has today been defined as death metal in their native land.

Inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Metallica and Motorhead, the band took shape in 1982, with the original line up consisting of: Mille Petrozza (vocals, guitar), Jurgen “Ventor” Reil (drums) and Rob Fioretti (bass) firstly known as Tyrant and then Tormentor. The newly formed band released two demos “Blitzkrieg” in 1983 and “End of the World” in 1984.

In 1985, the band signed with the new German metal label Noise Records who encouraged the final name change and they settled on Kreator. It took them only ten days to record their debut album “Endless Pain” released later that year and created a huge buzz in the prominent underground metal scene emergent in Germany. With blistering and brutal thrash chords reverberating throughout the album, Kreator won an allegiance of fans. Promoting the album, the band added late Sodom guitarist Michael Wulf to play on the release tour.

In 1986 Kreator released their follow up album “Pleasure to Kill” which introduced the addition of guitarist Jorg ‘Tritze’ Trzebiatowski. The album considered a thrash classic demonstrated the band’s rapid progression of talent and technical ability, featuring the popular track “Flag of Hate” which made regular appearances on their live set lists. At the end of the year, the band released the three track EP “Flag of Hate”.

Releasing two albums and an EP between 1987-9, Kreator were given the opportunity to hop on tour with American thrash heavyweights Suicidal Tendencies on their North American tour which helped broaden the band’s appeal outside of Europe.

In 1989 the band featured in Thomas Schadt’s documentary “Thrash Altenessen” exploring the social effects of heavy metal in their local area. Following the release of their fourth album “Extreme Aggression”, Tritze departed in 2000 and was replaced by former Sodom guitarist Frank ‘Blackfire’ Gosdzik.

Whilst the 90’s became a pivotal point of genre experimentation for forerunners like Metallica and Anthrax in an attempt for commercial appeal, Kreator went against the grain delving deeper into death and industrial metal prominent in the 1992 album “Renewal”.

With a relentless touring schedule, it began to take a toll on the band as one by one they dropped out leaving Petrozza as the only original member. Fleeting member came and went and by the new millennia the line-up included: Christian ‘Speesy’ Giesler, Sami Yli-Sirnio and the return of Reil.

Over their extensive band history spanning decades, Kreator have become a beacon to many bands within the trash genre playing numerous festivals and sharing the stage with bands like: Napalm Death, Warbringer, King Diamond and Exodus. Kreator continue to provide electrifying, show-stopping performances ever enthused with an abundance of passion.

Live reviews

I got to see Kreator and Warbringer when I went to see Overkill at Stage 48 on a visit to New York. Although the band has been around since 1982, I hadn't heard much of their music before.

They have the expected heavy guitars and drums that are prevalent through all heavy metal, and have a sort of early to mid 90's Metallica sound that includes heavy, driving guitar riffs, easy to understand, somewhat melodic lyrics and a maintained drum beat throughout.

Heavy metal is a style that generates energy when it is good and relies on that energy in a live performance, and here Kreator was absolutely fantastic. Engaging the audience with both the music and fantastic visuals to jump, sing along to punctuate the songs, and generally move, dance, mosh and surf, Kreator got the crowd involved in the show and made it a truly interactive, energetic and just plain fun live performance.

While I sometimes enjoy listening to metal at home, it is nothing compared to the experience of a live metal concert where there are hundreds and thousands of fans all driving the energy of the music higher and Kreator is A+ with this. I would be glad to see them on the list of the next metal concert I go to.

Report as inappropriate

Germany has always had a history with thrash and gothic metal and one of its most extreme products is Kreator. Since 1982 this band has gone on to achieve international appeal, playing huge shows across the States and the rest of Europe. They have a huge following in the UK where metal is something of a cult genre anyway.

Beginning with 'Violent Revolution' they set the tone quickly as they appear through the hazy red smoke and attack all five sense at once with thrashing instrumentals and evasive vocals. They run through a well received main set which features material from a good selection of their albums yet definitely leans towards the more intense music as fans really get involved in stage charges and countless mosh pits. The encore is reserved for a homage to Iron Maiden with a cover of 'The Number of the Beast' before they get back to their own material and play two fan favourites 'Flag of Hate' and 'Tormentor' in a reworked manner which receives the biggest reaction so far as the bruised and battered crowd throw up their arms and celebrate this intense, insane outfit.

They have come and thus they have delivered! Total pros, with a show full of pyro and props, the stage direction was excellent, as well as the playing.

They've been touring a different European city pretty much every single day non-stop, and being the third before last show of the tour, you could see the exhaustion creeping in on them. I get they're not super human, but unfortunately I couldn't feel the band clicking with the audience as much as I've felt other bands manage. I think a tour with more breaks between shows would really bring to their absolute best.

Don't get me wrong, it was still one hell of a gig, mostly centred around new material. Gods of Violence is a very good album and it shows live, with the audience picking up on the speed and the aggression and the mosh pit going insane pretty much the entire time.

Loved it, and had the band a little more energy in the tank it would have been legendary.

I have seen Kreator 1991, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013. The old school thrash metal band has never put on a bad show. True, there was a time when their albums weren't the best, but they have stuck too their guns and persevered with that distinct Kreator sound and come out better for it.

I have seen them in tiny clubs in Tijuana, Seattle, Denver, NYC and at Wacken Open Air and Brutal Assault Festivals in Europe. They command respect everywhere they play. If you miss them live, its you're own fault for not seeing one helluva band. Now, go out and get your Kreator ticket. See you there in the front row or in the pit!!!

Freaking amazing show!!! I have been a fan of Obituary and Kreator since the early '80's and this was my first time to see both of them live! They put on a very entertaining show! I was head banging and thrashing all night! I filmed some videos also to post on Facebook to let all my friends see how great it was! I also enjoyed Horrendous. I just discovered them recently on Spotify. All the bands had an excellent variety of amazing shirts and merchandise so I loaded up on that as well! I highly recommend this tour to any Metalhead!!! \m/

Having never seen kreator before I didn't know what to expect, the show was phenomenal, pyros ticker tape, mosh pits I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

The rest of the line up was awesome although I did feel Soilwork were slightly weak in comparison to aborted and at first glance it looked like they had Justin Bieber in drums. All in all though a great gig

Big crowd, good performance, although after they played some new stuff from Gods of Violence they basically entirely copied their previous live sets — even down to what Mille chatted to us about. That was a bit weird. Blacking out the lights and going off stage between every ~2 songs also killed the mood a bit.

Overall, smashing show though.

This was my second time experiencing a Kreator live performance, and they continue to deliver one of the best Metal live experiences. Everything from their sound, to the light display were on-point, and they can sure work a crowd. Kreator is at the forefront of Thrash Metal genre, and they show no sign of slowing down. Awesome concert!!!

For nearly 30 years, Germanys biggest export in thrash metal, KREATOR, have proven to be persistent, innovative and an unstoppable force. Their legendary status has influenced many current bands and they are part of the “Teutonic Big 4’’ alongside Destruction, Sodom & Tankard.

Since their inception in 1982 they have released 13 raw, powerful and explosive studio albums. KREATOR successfully blended influences from US Thrash contemporaries Metallica, Slayer and co, with their signature brand of blistering Euro Metal to create a sound that has endeared them to fans worldwide. In 2012 KREATOR released their stunning album ‘Phantom Antichrist’ which saw the band receive their highest ever German chart success. KREATOR recently released the scintillating live DVD ‘Dying Alive’

“The crowd go into a crazed moshing frenzy” (Metal Hammer)

KREATOR’s incomprehensively brilliant live show has seen them travel the globe spreading their love of all things power and brutality to the masses and it will finally be Australia’s turn for the first time since 2009 to experience their pure on stage thrash mayhem. Get ready for the kings of Teutonic Thrash Titans!

“Kreator remain among the elite” (Metal Hammer)

Joining the mighty KREATOR will be none other than San Francisco’s thrash metal legends, DEATH ANGEL.

Spawning from the home of many a legendary Thrash band, the Bay Area, DEATH ANGEL are set to destroy Australian stages and to show as to why they are so heavily recognized as influential bands of the genre. Their groundbreaking album ‘Act III’ remains an “all-time thrash classic’’ (Metal Hammer) and their recent 2013 release ‘The Dream Calls For Blood’ wowed the critics with smashing return to their brilliant best.

When they were last toured with Armored Saint in 2009 they ripped Australia a new one and garnered reviews like:

“A Bay Area Thrash Metal 101 lesson – and what a lesson it was” (FasterLouder)

“This show was the best I’ve seen in so long” (Metal As Fuck)

One thing is for certain… this is an opportunity to see thrash metal supremacy at its best, an incredible and inspirational double bill onslaught. Thrash ‘Til Death…..

“Prepare to get your face ripped off!” Mille Petrozza (Kreator)

Australia reportedly cuts Matisse Thybulle from Olympic roster, finalizes deeper-than-ever squad for Paris

The boomers, who won bronze in tokyo, will bring eight current nba players to the paris games.

thybulle-getty.png

Matisse Thybulle will not play for Australia at the 2024 Olympics. Thybulle is healthy and wanted to play for the Boomers at the Paris Games, but, when the coaching staff finalized the roster on Thursday, they cut him, per ESPN Australia's Olgun Uluc .

The final roster includes:

  • eight current NBA players ( Dyson Daniels , Dante Exum , Josh Giddey , Josh Green , Joe Ingles , Jock Landale , Patty Mills , Duop Reath )
  • two Boomers mainstays (former NBA player Matthew Dellavedova , who is now a member of a member of the NBL's Melbourne United, and Nick Kay, who plays for Japan's Shimane Susanoo Magic)
  • two newcomers (Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay , who both play for the NBL's Tasmania JackJumpers)

Mills, Green, Ingles, Dellavedova, Exum, Landale, Reath and Kay were all on the team that won bronze at the Olympic Games in Tokyo three years ago. So was Thybulle, who also suited up for the Boomers at the FIBA World Cup last summer.

Thybulle was not the only notable omission -- Chris Goulding, Xavier Cooks and Jack White were all on the World Cup squad -- but he was the most surprising one. The 27-year-old Portland Trail Blazers wing is one of the world's best defenders, and the Boomers are in the same Olympic group as Canada in the Olympics. Had he made the team, he would have surely spent time defending Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and/or Jamal Murray .

Between Daniels, Exum and Green, though, Brian Goorjian's coaching staff decided it had enough defense-first wings at its disposal. As strange as it may seem to cut Thybulle, taking all of them to France would have compromised the Boomers' floor spacing. In the end, the last spot came down to Thybulle and Daniels, per ESPN Australia , and they chose Daniels.

"It's the job [Goorjian] chose but it is a f---ing shit job," Ingles said, via ESPN Australia. "It sucks."

Before the roster was finalized, Goorjian said, "Whatever comes out of this, there's gonna be a lot of people that wanna put a bullet in my head. There's a no-win here. I've got a great staff. I feel really good that we're gonna make the right decisions and put the best on the floor."

Ingles, who on Wednesday agreed to a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves , was in danger of being cut, too, before Thursday's exhibition game against China, per ESPN Australia. In the third quarter of that game, Ingles breathed some life into Australia's previously stagnant offense, solidifying his spot on the team.

This will be the fifth Olympics for Ingles and Mills; Andrew Gaze is the only other Australian men's player to ever play in that many. Along with Thybulle's exclusion, the fact that Ingles' place on the team was in jeopardy reinforces what should be pretty obvious by now: Australia's talent pool has never been deeper.

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay makes Tour de France history, becoming the first black rider to win stage

Sport Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay makes Tour de France history, becoming the first black rider to win stage

A Black African cyclist stands smiling with fist pumped at the end of a stage in the Tour de France.

Eritrea's Biniam Girmay has made history, becoming the first black rider to win a Tour de France stage.

Girmay said his sprint win in the mostly flat third leg of this year's race was "for all Africans".

"We must be proud now. We are really part of the big races," he said. "Now it's our moment. It's our time."

Before the podium celebration, Girmay went over and greeted Eritrean fans waving their country's green, red and blue flag.

"There is a whole continent that has been waiting for this," said Aike Visbeek, the performance director for Girmay's Intermarche-Wanty team.

"It's been done now, and I hope it will open the floodgates for more riders from Africa. He's an ambassador in every way."

Meanwhile, Mark Cavendish's pursuit of a record-breaking 35th stage win was postponed by a crash ahead of him in the finale, and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz took the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar, making him the first Ecuadorean to lead cycling's biggest race.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d'Italia to become the first black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour.

But Girmay's Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Also in 2022, Girmay became the first rider from a sub-Saharan country to win a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race.

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

The 231 kilometre leg from Piacenza to Turin — the longest stage of this Tour — provided the first chance for a mass sprint. There will be at least a handful of other opportunities for sprinters as the race prepares to cross back into France following the first four stages in Italy.

With time to start raising his arms before he crossed the line, Girmay finished just ahead of Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud De Lie.

Cavendish has been tied with Eddy Merckx on 34 wins for three years and put off retirement to try again this year to break the record.

Members of the Israel-Premier Tech team fell ahead of Cavendish, who crossed 113th but was given the same finishing time as Girmay as per rules that neutralise the times in case of crashes in the final five kilometres.

"I was just looking to stay up. I'm too little to see what's going on but I could hear it," Cavendish said.

"Someone skidded and I was just waiting for someone to hit from behind. Luckily they didn't and we kind of got through, but we were way off it and with 2.5K to go we were out of it. I don't think anybody was seriously hurt and that's the main thing."

Cavendish complimented Girmay, who won a reduced sprint.

"That's just massive. Cycling is massive in Eritrea. It's super good for him and for African cycling," Cavendish said. "He's a legend, isn't he?"

Pogacar dropped to second overall, with the same time as Carapaz.

Remco Evenepoel — the 2022 world champion and Spanish Vuelta winner — is third overall; and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is fourth, both also with the same time as Carapaz.

Danish rider Casper Pedersen had to abandon the race after falling with 15 kilometres to go and breaking his collarbone.

The race crosses back into France on Tuesday during Stage 4, the first big mountain leg going up to Sestriere and over the Col du Galibier — one of the Tour's classic climbs — in the 140-kilometre route from Pinerolo to Valloire.

Pogacar, who won the Tour in 2020 and 2021, and Vingegaard will be favoured to take the yellow jersey from Carapaz, who won the Giro in 2019 before taking gold in Tokyo three years ago.

"Tomorrow will be a big day," Carapaz said. "It will be complicated. I'm going to try and give everything. I'm going to try and enjoy every single moment in the yellow jersey."
