Viet Mark Introduction

Dear honored guest,

Vietmark Co. is a young business enterprise established on July 18, 2006. Its experienced founders have been working for many years in the areas of training and tourism in Ho Chi Minh City. A vital part to our success is that we cooperate with human resource counseling experts, cultural-national-historical-geographical scholars, former leaders of Youth Union who specialize in outdoor activities, lecturers, and the top tour guides in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

With our motto, “A new way of thinking”, Vietmark always breaks through to look for new solutions “outside the office” to solve human resource challenges and orient leadership toward a common goal through indoor and outdoor teambuilding activities. At the same time, creating new tour package options: new destination, new design, new service, with the desire to provide you an exciting, unforgettable, fun filled, “team orientated” experience that your group will be talking about for years to come.

Business activities include many different areas, specializing in the following services:

·         MICE: meeting, incentive, conference and event.

·         Counsel and consolidate human resources of companies through indoor and outdoor teambuilding activities promoting unity and team cohesion.

·         Domestic and outbound tours: sightseeing, relaxation and adventure.

·         Provide expert local knowledge and history for tour destinations.

Vietmark always listens to and satisfies your requirements. Not only in tour and outdoor activities, but Vietmark joins together with the Board of Managers and Human Resource Department of companies to feel the pulse of the team spirit to form appropriate solutions.

From large corporate teams, to long travel excursions, and small groups with special requirements, Vietmark is your trusted source for an unforgettable Teambuilding adventure that will bring the competitive cohesive edge to any company.

17 Famous Landmarks in Vietnam: Iconic Vietnam Landmarks

The following landmarks in Vietnam are some of the most diverse and mind-blowing attractions you will ever come upon in your life. From man-made treasures to natural wonders of the world, you are bound to discover a landmark that will truly knock your socks off!

Vietnam is a magnificent place to travel considering the rich culture and history displayed uniquely throughout the entire country. Each city is one-of-a-kind and offers a different spin on life in Vietnam.

Nonetheless, travelling around Vietnam kind be rather overwhelming considering the array of fantastic landmarks. So, I’ve chosen some of my favourite places in the country to share with the world. Don’t forget to take note of some of my insider tips!

Where is Vietnam?

Vietnam is a South East Asian country that borders China, Laos, and Cambodia. Moreover, Vietnam is rich in history and offers a varying range of landscapes throughout the entire country.

Vietnam is quite a large country expanding over 331,210 km² of area. Not to mention, it’s a relatively easy country to travel around considering its long and narrow-like shape which makes it effortless to complete a single one-way trip.

This is one of the few countries travellers like to include on their South East Asian journey and it sure as heck packs an absolute punch!

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Vietnam?

Considering the weather is highly unpredictable, it’s difficult to choose an exact time of year to travel the country. Nonetheless, the springtime typically ranges from March to April making it the best time of year to travel.

Tip: Pack an oversized plastic poncho with you when you are out on day trips. You never know when a tropical storm will strike!

How Long Do I Need to Spend in Vietnam?

You could quite easily pass many weeks here in the land of Vietnam and barely notice the time flying by. However, not everyone has the luxury of spending lots of time travelling.

Therefore, I would recommend a bare minimum of three weeks to see the best landmarks in Vietnam. I managed to spend six weeks backpacking solo throughout Vietnam and felt like I could’ve seen so much more!

The 17 Best Landmarks in Vietnam

Starting from the North of Vietnam, we will slowly work our way South and include some of the best landmarks in Vietnam.

Please note that I have included some of these as my own favourite personal experiences and what I thoroughly recommend visiting.

  • Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is an iconic scooter road trip right at the top of Northern Vietnam. It’s roughly a 4-5 day road trip that takes you along a 350km journey.

Cruise through villages, towns and enjoy breathtaking views over rice fields, limestone karsts, and rivers. This is also easily one of the best things to do while visiting Vietnam.

  • Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is one of the most iconic travel destinations and one of the most well-known locations in Vietnam. This jaw-dropping archipelago of limestone formations is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam and must be experienced!

  • Hanoi Old Quarter

Dive deep into the realm of Vietnam to experience the country’s culture in its most authentic state. Simply stroll around the streets, share smiles with friendly locals and munch down on a freshly made Banh Mi.

Tip: Visit the Hang Da Market for a locals shopping experience

  • Hanoi Train Street

The Hanoi Train Street is easily one of the best landmarks in Vietnam and Hanoi. Besides, this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a local beer while slurping on a Pho waiting for the train to come through.

Loads of travellers flock to this landmark hotspot in order to snap some pics and watch the large train squeeze through the tiny laneway. Right before the train comes through you will hear a local blowing a whistle and calling out for everyone to move off the tracks.

Therefore, steer very clear of the tracks and move inside one of the restaurants. I highly recommend sitting on the second level for the best view of the train. Plus, you’ll enjoy a great perspective over the train.

Tip: Check the train schedule online before heading to this location to ensure you don’t miss out. Allow at least 15 mins before the train arrives to order some food or a drink and then wait for the show to begin!

  • Hang Mua Viewpoint

Travel a little further south to get out of the hustle and bustle of Hanoi and visit one of Vietnam’s most beautiful viewpoints, Hang Mua.

This is a stunning landmark in Vietnam with plenty of historical attributes worth reading through in my other post.

  • Bai Dinh Pagoda

Another iconic landmark in Vietnam is the Bai Dinh Pagoda, also in Ninh Binh. Moreover, this space is a history lovers dream with a complex of unique and ancient temples. Not to mention, there is old mixed in with the new which paves the way for a truly sacred experience.

Step into the world of Buddhism and take in the awe of architecture and attention to detail within these beautiful buildings. Finally, these are some of my favourite temples in the country.

  • Hang Son Doong

The Hang Son Doong is the worlds largest cave and is located in the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. This is a fascinating environment as it offers its own worldly ecosystem. From squirrels and monkeys and rivers and plants, this place is truly unique.

However, to preserve this natural masterpiece, there is a maximum of 1000 visitors allowed per year. Therefore, you typically need to book this tour a couple of years in advance to ensure your position in exploring the cave.

On the other hand, there are a number of other beautiful caves I recommend visiting if you don’t get a place in visiting the Hang Son Doong. Be sure to check out Paradise cave for an epic alternative!

  • Hue Historic Citadel

The Hue Historic Citadel is a royal palace set within the forbidden city. The Imperial City is the perfect place to dive deep into the history of the Nguyen dynasty.

  • Hai Van Pass

Another one of Vietnam’s iconic road trips is the Hai Van Pass slightly north of Da Nang. Moreover, this stunning drive takes you along the edge of the mountain and offers beautiful ocean views over Da Nang Bay.

It’s easily completed within a day and is definitely one of the best activities to do in Vietnam

  • The Marble Mountains

Explore a set of caves, mountains, viewpoints, and temples at this wonderful location just south of Da Nang. When the sun peeks through the cave it gives off an extremely holy and awe-worthy aura.

landmarks in vietnam

  • Hoi An Ancient Town

The Hoi An Ancient town is likely one of the most beautiful little towns in all of Vietnam. Moreover, this gorgeous place is bursting with vibrant yellows, pinks, and oranges.

There are plenty of cultural activities to enjoy within this town and I highly recommend spending an afternoon strolling the streets of this charming little place.

hanoi old town

Heading down to Da Lat, this beautiful city is rather unique to the rest of Vietnam and I think that the Maze Bar is the ultimate representation of this quirky little city. Head into Maze Bar for a drink and crawl your way through passages and climb stairs to reach the top of the bar.

Upon reaching the top, you will be greeted with stunning views over the city. Besides, this is the ultimate location for a drink at night as you enjoy views of the sparkling city in front of you.

  • Red Sand Dunes

Hang on a second, where in the world are we? Were you really expecting to come upon an array of red sand dunes in Vietnam? Yeah, me neither.

To visit the sand dunes, you will need to head to the coast of Mui Ne to explore this bizarre and fascinating location. And, this is the ultimate sunset location in Mui Ne. So, park yourself up with a couple of beers and enjoy the serenity.

landmarks in Vietnam

  • Ben Thanh Market

The Ben Thanh Market is a fantastic place to pick up a few new goodies including jewellery, clothing, shoes, bags, snacks, etc.

There are lots of locals willing to barter with you while you try to snap up the best deal possible. Have fun doing this and share plenty of smiles.

  • Bui Vien Walking Street

Head out for a night of chaos on Bui Vien. Moreover, this is a great place to watch locals party to techno-pop, soak up a few beers, and experience overstimulation from a million flashing lights.

I highly recommend this spot as a starting location for your night out. Then, if you want to go a little fancier, check out some of the rooftop bars in the area. Some of my favourites include the Lighthouse, Broma Not A Bar, Banana Mama, and The Observatory.

  • Cu Chi Tunnels

Delve deep into the underground world of the Cu Chi Tunnels. Firstly, these tunnels are a significant aspect of how Vietnamese soldiers lived during the Vietnam war. Therefore making it one of the most iconic landmarks in Vietnam and a crucial part of history.

Crawl through the tiny tunnels, discover some of the traps used in the war and if you’re up to it, try shooting a gun at a target. I highly recommend this location to all travellers as it was one of my favourite experiences in Vietnam.

cu chi tunnels

  • War Remnants Museum

Last, but certainly not least is the war remnants museum. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into prior to visiting this museum and it is easily the most shocking and eye-opening exhibition I’ve ever seen.

Discover machinery, helicopters, and weapons used in the Vietnam war and then make your way through the levels of the museum to see the stories and life of Vietnamese through the 20-year-long war.

Not to mention, this is the appropriate time to pay your respects to those who lost their lives in this worldly-changing event. Finally, this is one of the most vital landmarks in Vietnam as it displays a significant part of the history of the country.

Tip: Go into the museum with an open mind and take it easy when going through some of the levels higher up. There is some extremely graphic imagery used in this museum and I wouldn’t recommend it for younger children.

Discover more about the war remnants museum here .

In conclusion, Vietnam is a magnificently diverse place full of rich culture. No matter which street you turn down or which cave you explore, you are bound to discover a new and unique part of the country.

Therefore, these are some of the best landmarks in Vietnam, however not limited to the only landmarks.

Finally, add at least a handful of these to your Vietnam itinerary and enjoy the ride! You are bound to love these places like the many thousands of tourists that visit these landmarks every year. Safe travels!

Plan your visit in advance (book your tour online below) and explore this  sophisticated hidden system  to have a first-hand experience with Vietnamese history and the lives of its soldiers.

During your visit, you will find  historical buildings  actively restored and preserved after their destruction during the Vietnam War, with remains of many  architectural works, temples and palaces  of exceptional cultural importance.

10- Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are a group of  five marble and limestone hills  located in the Ngũ Hành Sơn district, a few kilometres from Da Nang. Interestingly, those five peaks are named after the  five elements of life : Kim Son (metal), Thủy Son (water), Mộc Son (wood/plant), Hỏa Son (fire) and Thổ Son (earth).

Considered  historical gems  and  natural wonders  with a  spiritual setting , the Marble Mountains are a fascinating place to explore, offering a network of  caves, tunnels, towers and pagodas .

Home to underground rivers, tropical jungle, exotic wildlife and impressive stalagmites, the cave is a  stunning natural wonder  and offers an experience you will never forget!

13- The Temple of Literature

The  Temple of Literature , Văn Miếu, was founded in 1070 to honour the Chinese philosopher Confucius. It then became the  first university complex  in Vietnam, also known as the Imperial Academy, which has educated hundreds of renowned scholars and mandarins for over 700 years.

And despite the war, the site has retained its  architectural and cultural beauty  and remains a  recognised historical relic .

Surrounded by brick walls and covering an area of  over 54,000 square meters , the Temple of Literature holds  five courtyards  of different styles, perfect for a day of exploration.

👉🏻 An unforgettable tour I recommend which includes a visit to the Pagoda:  Hue: Royal Tombs and Thien Mu Pagoda Private Guided Tour .

15- War Remnants Museum

Another landmark not to miss in Vietnam is the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, one of the  most famous historical museums  in the country and a place to learn more about the past and the  impact of the Vietnam War .

Carrying an  immense historical and political significance , you will uncover  numerous exhibits  on the war that will challenge and grow your understanding and knowledge.

16- One Pillar Pagoda

The One Pillar Pagoda is a  historic Buddhist temple  in Hanoi and a top tourist attraction due to its  unique architectural features  and  cultural significance .

Also known as the Dien Huu Pagoda, the temple is named after its extraordinary characteristics of being  built on one single pillar  planted in a lotus pond to resemble a blossoming lotus emerging from the water.

Visiting this  symbolic monument  offers an unforgettable and eye-opening experience for all travellers and should be on your bucket list as you explore the Vietnamese capital.

But remember to  be respectful  of the place! This landmark is not only a famous tourist destination but also a  religious site  for local people.

And whilst these partly ruined structures are a popular tourist attraction for all ages, they are also a  perfect destination for history buffs and photo lovers , especially at sunrise!

Hằng Nga Guesthouse, famously known as the Crazy House, is an  uncommon building full of passion and fantasy  designed by Vietnamese architect Đặng Việt Nga in Đà Lạt.

The Crazy House is a  fascinating place to explore for all ages , as you will immerse yourself in an enchanted world and be amazed by its intricate design, representing  artistic freedom  and the  beauty of nature .

And not only is this building a lovely place to enjoy and wander, but  you can also sleep in it ! The hotel proposes  guest rooms  for those who want to get closer to nature, with each room featuring a different theme – for a night you will never forget.

👉🏻 An unforgettable tour I recommend which includes a visit to the Crazy House:  8-Hour DaLat Countryside with Silk Village, Elephant Falls .

19- Tomb of Khải Định

The Tomb of Khải Định is the  burial place  of the 12th Emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty and one of the  most visited attractions in Huế  for its  historical significance  and its mix of Vietnamese architecture with Western styles.

Add this  fascinating landmark  to your bucket list if you are passing through the area and step back in time as you explore the  most impressive and sophisticated of the seven imperial tombs  and marvel at its ancient beauty.

We end our  top 20 Vietnamese landmarks  with Po Nagar Temple, a Cham temple tower founded before 781 and one of the  most attractive destinations  to visit in Nha Trang City.

As you wander through the historical site, you will uncover  beautiful Champa architecture  and learn more about the past of the Cham people. It is a fascinating place to explore due to its stunning  artwork and architecture  – so do not forget your camera!

Tips for reducing your eco-impact in Vietnam

Sustainable travel  means exploring the world whilst being aware of your surroundings and having a positive social, environmental and economic impact on the places you visit.

Between rich culture, ethnic villages and stunning nature, Vietnam is a country full of history and diversity that demands attention and care. Being mindful of the places you visit and the people you meet is essential to their protection.

Here are some  eco-friendly travel tips for reducing your carbon footprint  when travelling across Vietnam and exploring its main landmarks:

Sustainable Tips

  • Book direct flights and  offset your carbon footprint . But, do not use carbon offsetting as a complete solution. Combine it with other sustainable practices, like avoiding single-use plastic on the plane and mindfully packing your backpack to be ready for your green adventure. For example, take a  filtered water bottle  to stay hydrated on the go.
  • Engage in tourism activities benefiting the local community, economy and wildlife . Look for authentic experiences but avoid tours more rooted in money than traditional culture! Choose a local operator with a responsible tourism policy (check out their website or ask questions). And, of course, never participate in activities harmful to wildlife.
  • If snorkelling or scuba diving, be sure to choose a responsible operator . In addition, be respectful of marine life. Never touch or step on coral, and wear  reef-safe sunscreen  which is good for your skin and the planet.
  • Hire a local guide if possible.  You will reinvest your money in the local community and learn from someone who knows the area and the culture.
  • Shop local souvenirs . Buy crafts at local markets and ask questions about the product and its origins. Never purchase items from endangered species.
  • Eat at local restaurants and tip your guides, hotel and restaurant staff . It may be small for you but can significantly impact their income.
  • Dress appropriately, especially when visiting religious sites . Much of Vietnam is still very conservative, especially in rural areas.
  • Always respect the local heritage . Treat people and their surroundings with respect. Sustainable travel is not only about the environment but also about the local communities. So, ask before taking a photo, always be respectful and try to learn a few Vietnamese words!

Exploring Vietnam – FAQ

Hạ Long Bay is undoubtedly the most famous landmark in Vietnam, known for its emerald-green waters and thousands of rugged islands topped with rainforests – offering an experience you will never forget!

The best time to visit Vietnam is between November and April, when the country enjoys mild temperatures with the least rainfall. However, remember that Vietnam is a vast country where the weather will differ depending on the region.

I suggest spending at least 14 days in Vietnam to have enough time to travel and see the main attractions and landmarks at each stop without rushing. On the other hand, spending more time is always a great thing. It will allow you to see more and truly connect with the culture and locals!

Said to represent a lotus flower growing from the water, the One Pillar Pagoda rises on a single pillar from the centre of a lotus pond.

The pagoda was built in the 11th century and is one of Vietnam’s more spectacular landmarks.

Despite its small size, the pagoda’s shrine is richly decorated and is dedicated to the Vietnamese Buddhist deity Quan Am.

The temple sits atop a single pillar carved into the shape of a lotus blossom, reflecting its surroundings.

One of the most famous and incredible natural landmarks in Vietnam is Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of 2000 islands, many of which are uninhabited.

A must-visit landmark in Ha Long Bay is Bo Hon Island, home to the staggeringly beautiful Hang Sung Sot Cave or the Cave of Surprises.

The entrance to the cave is a little hike away from the jetty up a steep path.

Once inside the cave you are met with unusual rock formations, including a tortoise and a Buddha.

The caves are illuminated with colourful lights, and with pools of water dotted around, it makes for a magical experience.

Deep within the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park is Hang Sơn Đoòng, one of the most incredible cave systems in the world.

The cave’s name translates to Mountain River Cave and is still expanding in size due to an underwater tunnel which connects to another cave.

The cave is immensely large, 200 meters high and 9.4km long, and is home to monkeys, snakes and flying foxes.

When visiting the cave, two dolines or sinkholes illuminate previously dark areas with light, exposing an internal jungle with trees as tall as 50 metres.

The worlds largest stalagmites can also be found here.

Hang Sơn Đoòng landmark is at Xuân Trạch, Bố Trạch District, Quang Binh Province.

Fed by the Quay Son River, which marks the border with China, Ban Gioc Waterfalls are an incredible landmark in Vietnam.

The waterfall is 30 m high and 300 m wide, making it the widest waterfall in Vietnam.

The falls drop three times into a pool of shimmering blue water below and are surrounded by lush jungle.

The falls can be viewed from afar, however, it is worth the low entrance fee and raft hire to get a closer feel of the falls.

Locals punt you down the river on bamboo rafts to get visitors as close to the falls as possible.

Ban Gioc Waterfall landmark is at TL 211, Đàm Thuỷ, Trùng Khánh, Cao Bằng.

In the spectacular Halong Bay Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site translating to ‘the Bay of Descending Dragons’, is Cat Dua, a spectacularly beautiful island only accessible by boat.

The island has white sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters lapping gently at the shore.

The island is popular with water sports enthusiasts as kayaking and snorkelling are available here.

The island has more to it than water sports, however.

In English, the name translates to Monkey Island, as this is where hundreds of monkeys who inhabit the island hang around the beach to interact with locals and tourists.

Cat Dua landmark is at Monkey Island, Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba Island.

Mui Ne is a tiny fishing village on the Eastern coast of Vietnam.

The village is popular with visitors for its beaches, local charm, cuisine and stunning scenery, however, it is the dunes here that make it a must-see landmark.

Towering over a calm blue lotus pond is the white sand dune of Mui Ne.

The dunes form an unusual site next to the pond surrounded by lush green rainforest.

The dunes are an accessible location for quad biking, and many locals offer a rental service allowing visitors to ride over the mounds of sand.

A longstanding must-see landmark of Vietnam is Titop Island.

Named after Russian cosmonaut Gherman Titov who visited Halong Bay where the island lies in 1962, this tower of limestone and rainforest is a spectacular sight.

One of the smaller islands in the bay, Titop welcomes visitors with white sand beaches synonymous with this area, as well as snorkelling warm, calm waters.

The island is popular with water sports, but its most prominent attraction is at its summit.

After a climb of 427 steps through the rainforest that covers the island, visitors are rewarded with a mountaintop gazebo and breathtaking views over the surrounding bay.

On a small isolated island in the Cat Tien National Park is the Dao Tien Endangered Primate Species Centre.

Within the centre, endangered species such as golden-cheeked gibbons, silver langur and pygmy loris are cared for and taught vital survival skills before being released back into the wild.

Many of the primates in the care of the centre were pets through the illegal trade of exotic animals, and need to be retaught basic skills to survive.

Native fruit trees have been planted on the island to encourage the primates natural foraging skills as part of their rehabilitation.

Visitors can view these primates in their semi-wild environment, and can even sponsor individual primates to support their rehabilitation and care.

As the war progressed, the tunnels grew to house entire villages underground, safely away from the bombings above.

Life resumed as normally as possible here, and there were even theatres and music halls built to entertain troops and civilians.

Best Rewards Credit Card Reviews

The best credit cards for rewards will offer you more than 1% back on any purchase, whether that comes in the form of travel rewards or cash back. You'll also get benefits such as purchase protection or travel insurance, and bonus categories for quickly earning rewards. The best cards even offer luxurious privileges such as airport lounge access and elite status with airlines, hotels, and car rental companies.

These are the very best rewards credit cards of 2024, as chosen by our team of credit card experts at Business Insider.

Best Travel Rewards Card Overall: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

It's hard to recommend the Chase Sapphire Reserve® as the best travel card overall now that it comes with a hefty $550 annual fee.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, on the other hand, has broader appeal with many similar features, all for a significantly lower $95 annual fee.

The Sapphire Preferred Card earns 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠ (2x points on all other travel purchases) and 3x points on dining instead of the Reserve's 5x total points on air travel and 10x total points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Travel℠ (after earning the $300 travel credit) and 3x points on other travel and dining.

Points are worth 1.25 cents apiece on travel booked through Chase, and you can transfer them to airline and hotel partner loyalty programs. You don't receive an annual travel credit, but you'll still have car rental primary coverage, as well as trip delay coverage and purchase protection. And each year on your account anniversary, you'll receive a points bonus equal to 10% of all purchases made in the previous year.

If you don't think you'll be able to use the Chase Sapphire Reserve®'s benefits, such as airport lounge access, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card could be a better choice for you. If you eventually decide that the Chase Sapphire Reserve is worth it, you can ask to upgrade your card.

Best Travel Rewards Card for Beginners: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

If you're new to credit card travel rewards, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is an excellent starting point. It offers a generous welcome bonus of 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within three months from account opening (worth $1,275 based on Business Insider's valuation of Capital One miles ).

What makes this card so appealing is its straightforward earning structure and its flexibility in redeeming rewards. Cardholders earn 5x miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through the Capital One Travel Portal and 2x miles on all other purchases.

On the redemption side, you can keep it simple by using your Capital One miles to offset travel purchases made with your card at a rate of 1 cent per mile — no fussing with award charts or availability. Alternatively, you can transfer your miles to Capital One's airline and hotel partners to book award travel and potentially get even more value.

You'll also get an impressive range of perks, including up to $100 in credit toward the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, car rental insurance, travel accident insurance, purchase assurance, lost luggage reimbursement, and more.***

Best Travel Rewards Card for Luxury Benefits: The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express has a high $695 annual fee, but offers a long list of benefits to match. The Amex Platinum Card is also one of the best options for paying for flights because you'll earn 5x Membership Rewards points on airfare purchased directly with airlines and with American Express Travel (starting January 1, 2021, earn 5x points on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year).

Like Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you can use Amex Membership Rewards points to purchase travel, gift cards, or products directly from the issuer, or transfer points to partner airline and hotel loyalty programs. The best value comes from that latter use. If you redeem points by using them to book flights through Amex, you'll get a value of 1 cent per point.

The Platinum Card® from American Express gives you access to the same Priority Pass airport lounges (enrollment required) as the Sapphire Reserve, plus Delta Sky Clubs when you fly Delta, as well as the proprietary American Express Centurion Lounges.

Amex Platinum Card members also get exclusive access to major events and experiences, including once-in-a-lifetime "By Invitation Only" events.

Of course, $695 is a lot to shell out each year. Up to $200 in annual airline fee credits ** and up to $200 in annual Uber Cash credits (including Uber Eats)** certainly help offset that cost, but the airline credit can be difficult to use if you aren't checking bags or buying drinks on flights.

Best Value Premium Travel Rewards Card: Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Capital One's travel rewards program has become very competitive, with expanded card benefits, new transfer partners , and occasional transfer bonuses. The transfer value has improved as well, with most partners offering a 1:1 transfer ratio, and Capital One miles are easy to earn and redeem.

Along with earning 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles per dollar on flights booked through Capital One Travel, and 2x miles on all other purchases, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card comes with top-notch benefits.

Cardholders receive $300 per year in credits toward travel booked through Capital One, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and Capital One airport lounge access (even for authorized users), a 10,000-mile bonus on each account anniversary (worth $100 in travel), and Visa Infinite travel and purchase benefits.

You can redeem miles at a fixed rate toward a statement credit to cover travel purchases with Capital One. For example, if you buy a $500 plane ticket, you can apply 50,000 miles to cancel that charge. Or, for potentially even more value, you can transfer miles to over a dozen Capital One airline and hotel partners.

Read our Capital One Venture X Rewards credit card review here.

Best Flat-Rate Cash Rewards Card: Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card

All the other top picks in this guide earn credit card rewards that can be redeemed in a variety of ways, and they're especially valuable when you redeem for travel. The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is a cash-back card, on the other hand — this option may be a better option if you prefer the ultimate in flexible rewards or don't know for sure that you'll be traveling.

Cardholders earn 2% cash rewards on purchases, and there's a solid welcome bonus offer of $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first three months from account opening. On top of that, the card offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and qualifying balance transfers for 15 months from account opening (then a 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% variable APR).

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is a great choice if you want a card that earns a high rate of cash rewards without having to worry about keeping track of bonus categories. You'll earn a flat 2% cash back on what you buy.

If you want to get maximum value out of your spending, a rewards card will get you a higher return. For instance, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card earns 2x miles on non-bonus purchases, but 2x miles isn't equal to 2% cash back. Our points and miles valuations peg Capital One miles at 1.7 cents each, because you can redeem them for travel through a variety of airline and hotel programs. Travel redemptions will usually get you more than 1 cent per mile or point in value. But if cash back is the most useful to you, this probably doesn't matter.

See our guide to the best cash-back credit cards  for more top picks.

Best Premium Rewards Card for Travel and Dining: Chase Sapphire Reserve®

With 5x points on air travel and 10x points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Travel (after earning the $300 travel credit), 3x points on other travel and dining, and 1 point per dollar on everything else, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® makes it easy to maximize your everyday spending, and it comes with a slew of perks. It used to be our top travel rewards card pick, but now that it has a $550 annual fee, it's harder to recommend to everyone.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve's annual fee is offset by a travel credit of up to $300 each year, good for things like taxis, subway fares, parking, tolls, and flights. This effectively decreases the annual fee to $250, so you'll have to decide whether the card's other benefits are worth it for you.

You now get a complimentary two-year Lyft Pink All Access membership, $5 per month in DoorDash in-app credit (along with complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership through December 2024), and up to $15 per month in Instacart credits (activation required by July 31, 2024). If you use these services frequently you may be able to justify the higher annual fee — but that's not the case for everyone.

Check out our guide to the best travel credit cards for more options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Best Travel Rewards on Dining and Groceries: American Express® Gold Card

The American Express® Gold Card earns a massive 4x points at restaurants and on up to $25,000 per calendar year at U.S. supermarkets (and 1x points after that), 3x points on flights booked directly through the airline, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Based on the fact that you can easily redeem Membership Rewards points for more than 1 cent of value each when you transfer them to airline and hotel partners, this is one of the highest-earning available cards for everything food-related.

The American Express® Gold Card offers up to $120 in dining credits per year (after enrollment), broken into chunks of $10 each month. Credits are good for purchases through food delivery services Seamless and GrubHub, and at Milk Bar, Goldbelly, Wine.com, The Cheesecake Factory, or participating Shake Shack locations. Cardholders also receive $120 per year in Uber Cash (this is only applicable to U.S. Eats orders and Rides, and the card needs to be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit).

These credits can offset most of the card's $250 annual fee even before factoring in the value of the rewards you'll earn.

Choosing the Best Rewards Credit Card

Rewards credit cards give you something back for every dollar you spend — whether that's points or miles for travel, or cash back that you can use to lower your monthly bill or to treat yourself to a splurge.

But if you currently carry a balance on your credit card, prioritize paying off that debt as soon as possible before getting a new card, since any rewards you could earn will be wiped out by high interest rates from your existing card debt.

On top of that, many cards offer high welcome bonuses to new cardholders who meet a spending requirement in the first few months after opening a card. Some cards also include benefits like travel and purchase protection.

Rewards Credit Card Bonus Categories

This guide can help you find your best reward credit card if you already know what you want. But what if you're not sure which type of credit card best suits your spending habits?

If you're looking to maximize rewards on your everyday spending, look no further than the following credit cards. We'll break it down by spending category — from dining to gas to groceries.

Dining is a spend category most people will want to maximize since the average American spends $3,030 each year on dining out, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Luckily, lots of cards offer generous rewards for dining.

The Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants) offers the highest return on dining spending, with 5x points on these purchases. You may notice that some cards, like the Hilton cards below, offer more than 5x points — but keep in mind that the points multiplier is only half of the equation.

You also need to know how much each point is worth. We recommend using Business Insider's points and miles valuations to get a sense of how many cents you'll get in value with different loyalty currencies. These valuations are based on all the different ways you can use a given type of points or miles, from redeeming them as statement credits to transferring them to a travel partner to book a flight.

Below, we'll rank the best dining credit cards in order of highest to lowest return based on how many rewards you earn per dollar spent, and the value of those rewards based on our estimations.

  • Bilt Mastercard® : 3 points per dollar spent on dining; 6x points per dollar on Bilt Rent Day , which falls on the first of every month (points worth 5% return on dining most days, 9.9% on Bilt Rent Days) (must make at least five purchases per billing cycle to earn rewards on this card)
  • American Express® Gold Card : 4 points per dollar at restaurants (points worth 1.8 cents apiece; 7.2% return on spending)
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 3 points per dollar spent on dining (points worth 1.8 cents apiece; 5.4% return on spending)
  • Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card† : 4% cash back on dining (4% return on spending)

Based on the numbers, the Citi Prestige is the most rewarding card for dining purchases on most days, but it's not taking applications anymore. And the Bilt Mastercard is a great option if you strategically dine out on the first of each month to take advantage of 6x dining returns.

The American Express® Gold Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are better options for you if you prefer to earn Amex or Chase points.

You can transfer Citi ThankYou points to over a dozen airline transfer partners including Cathay Pacific, JetBlue, and Virgin Atlantic. But Amex and Chase's loyalty programs partner with airlines and hotels that are arguably more useful for many U.S.-based travelers, such as British Airways, Delta, and Marriott with Amex and Hyatt, United, and Southwest with Chase. In fact, Business Insider values Citi points (1.6 cents per point) a bit lower than Amex points and Chase points (1.8 cents each)

Gas and EV Charging

If you have a car, gas is a big spending category — and it's one that many cash-back credit cards pay out big rewards on.

  • American Express® Business Gold Card : 4 points per dollar spent at the two categories where you spend the most each month, including U.S. gas stations, on up to $150,000 per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar (7.2% return on spending)
  • Citi Strata Premier℠ Card : 3 points per dollar spent on restaurants, supermarkets, air travel, hotels, and gas stations (4.8% return on spending)
  • Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card : 6 points per dollar spent on eligible purchases at U.S. gas stations (3% return on spending)

Again, not all points are created equal, and whether 6 Hilton points are equivalent (or higher than) 4% cash back or 4 Membership Rewards points depends on how you redeem your rewards. Most people will be best off going with the American Express® Business Gold Card for gas rewards.

Thanks to a vast list of hotel and airline transfer partners, you can redeem Membership Rewards points for some incredible travel experiences. If you have a business-class trip to Europe in mind, Membership Rewards transfer partner All Nippon Airways (ANA) offers one of the best deals out there at 88,000 miles round-trip.

However, if you're saving up your Hilton points for a high-end resort in the Maldives, it could be worth channeling gas spending toward the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card.

Groceries

  • American Express® Gold Card : 4x points at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $25,000 per year (then 1x point; 1.8%-7.2% return on spending)
  • Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express : 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 spent per year (then 1%; 1%-6% return on spending)
  • Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card : 6 points per dollar spent on eligible purchases at U.S. supermarkets (3% return on spending)
  • Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express : 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 spent per calendar year (then 1%; 1%-3% return on spending)
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 3x points on online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs) (5.4% return on spending)

With 4x points on the first $25,000 spent each year at U.S. supermarkets, the American Express® Gold Card offers the most generous payout on grocery spending. Considering the average U.S. household spends $4,445 on groceries per year, these limits shouldn't be problematic for most consumers.

Earning 6% cash back on the first $6,000 spent, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is a good option if you prefer cash back to rewards points. When maxed out, the 6% back equates to $360 cash back, which is enough for most people to book at least a couple of hotel nights or a round-trip transcontinental flight.

Flights and Other Travel

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or with Amex Travel on up to $500,000 in spending a year, 5 Membership Rewards points on prepaid hotels booked on Amex Travel (9% return on spending)
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 5x points on air travel (9% return on spending) and 10x points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards® (after earning the $300 travel credit) (18% return on spending) and 3x points on other travel purchases (5.4% return on spending)
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 5 points per dollar on all travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal (9% return on spending)
  • American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com (5.4% return on spending)

If you're looking for lots of rewards for flights, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a great choice. The card earns 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines and through Amex Travel. Prepaid hotel bookings made with American Express also earn 5 points (starting January 1, 2021, earn 5X points on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year). One reason I'd recommend this card over the Citi Prestige is that the Amex Platinum now offers trip delay insurance, while Citi has done away with these on its cards.

While the American Express Platinum is a great option, not everyone will get enough value out of the 5x bonus categories to justify $695 annual fee.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a great alternative. While it earns a lower 3 points per dollar spent (outside of the Chase Travel Portal, where it earns 10x points on hotels and car rentals and 5x points on air travel), this bonus applies to all travel purchases, not just flights. Plus, the card's annual fee is partially offset by the $300 travel credit.

Unlike American Express, Chase doesn't restrict its travel credit to a specific airline. The credit automatically applies to any purchases coded as travel. That's why the Chase Sapphire Reserve is such a popular card for earning and redeeming travel rewards.

Other Spending

  • Chase Freedom Unlimited® : 1.5% cash back on most things, bonus cash back on eligible travel and drugstore purchases, can be combined with Chase Ultimate Rewards cards to boost your value
  • Discover it® Miles : 1.5 miles per dollar spent, and Discover will match the Miles you've earned at the end of your first year (3% return on spending)
  • Discover it® Cash Back : 1% cash back, with 5% in rotating quarterly categories on the first $1,500 in purchases each quarter you activate; then 1% cash back (1-5% return on spending) (from April 1 to June 30, 2024, earn 5% cash back at gas stations & electric vehicle charging stations, home improvement stores, and public transit on up to $1,500 in purchases after enrollment, then 1%)

Lots of cash-back credit cards offer at least 1.5% cash back on everything, which is a great benchmark to keep in mind on purchases that aren't eligible for bonus points. The Discover it® Miles is a great option for those looking for a no-annual-fee card with accelerated earning power. Cardholders earn 1.5 miles per dollar spent, which is equivalent to 1.5% cash back. Discover will match all the rewards you earn at the end of your first year and can be redeemed for statement credits toward travel purchases or transferred to your bank account.

For those looking to maximize long-term earnings, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® is another great option. It earns 1.5% cash back on most things, with bonus cash back on eligible travel and drugstore purchases. If you have a Chase travel credit card like the Sapphire Preferred Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can convert your Freedom Unlimited rewards to fully transferable Ultimate Rewards points. Essentially, you could earn 1.5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on everything outside of the bonus travel and drugstore categories, which equals a very solid return on every dollar you spend.

If you want the flexibility of earning occasional category bonuses, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Discover it® Cash Back are worth considering. Both cards earn 1% cash back along with 5% on select category bonuses. Bonus categories rotate every quarter and cardholders can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 worth of spending when they activate the bonus each quarter. Be sure to check the cash-back bonus calendar for Discover and Chase quarterly bonus categories for a better idea of where you can expect to earn more points (for Discover it® Cash Back, you can earn 5% cash back at gas stations & electric vehicle charging stations, home improvement stores and public transit from April 1 to June 30, 2024 on up to $1,500 in purchases after enrollment, then 1%).

For a more straightforward option, the Citi® Double Cash Card is solid. Cardholders earn 1% cash back on purchases and another 1% when they pay them off. Because you can convert your cash back to ThankYou points, the Citi® Double Cash Card is a great way to earn 2 ThankYou points on every dollar spent.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Credit Cards with Rewards

The best rewards credit card for you should offer benefits you can use, that are worth the annual fee to you (if there is one). Look for perks such as statement credits that cover travel purchases, and travel protection benefits such as trip delay and trip cancellation insurance.

Some strong criteria to consider when evaluating your next rewards credit card can include the following questions:

  • Does this card earn bonus points or miles where I spend the most?
  • Can those points or miles be applied to rewards I'd actually want, such as airlines I typically fly or hotels I want to book?
  • Is it easy to redeem my rewards, or will I get lost in a maze of draconian rules, restrictions, and blackout dates?

With these guidelines in mind, our editorial team of experts purposely left out many rewards credit cards currently available to new applicants in order to narrow down our list to the very best options.

We define "very best options" as those that offer concrete value through benefits like annual statement credits and airport lounge access and through rewards such as bonus points on your everyday spending.

This list doesn't include any of our best airline credit cards or best hotel credit cards . If you're specifically interested in travel rewards rather than cash back, check out our full list of the best travel rewards credit cards .
