ABOUT THE SRI LANKA INSTITUTE OF TOURISM AND HOTEL MANAGEMENT

The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) is the only Government approved premier Institute in Sri Lanka, which was established by the Government in 1964 to train young men and women in the complex field of Hospitality and Travel Industry, and is managed by The Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs. Further, in order to facilitate students island-wide, provincial schools have been set up in Anuradhapura, Bandarawela, Pallekelle, Koggala, Ratnapura, and Kurunegala.

Following the ever expanding tourism sector in the country with developments in the travel & hospitality industry, the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management provides a sound professional training to cater for the fast developing needs of the local and international hotel and tourism industries with the best trained and most highly motivated management professionals. During the first 10 years, the focus was to train personnel for top and middle management position in the industry, supplemented with a programme of short courses at craft level, which provided the manpower for the various departments in the hospitality trade.

Over the years SLITHM has fine-tuned its programmes to meet the specific needs of Sri Lankas and Asias changing industry wide market needs and new schemes of training are introduced frequently with opportunities to specialise in industry specific areas. The scheme allows students to be more flexible in the choice of training and provides multiple entry – exit points. It also recognizes prior learning, which benefits those who have gained hands on experience in the industry and who wish acquire further knowledge through a sound professional qualification.

The former Ceylon Hotel School was established by an Act of Parliament in 1966 and was managed by the then Ceylon Tourist Board with the goal of providing the hospitality industry with trained manpower at mid- and top-management levels and through skills training. The conversion to SLITHM took place in 2005 under the Tourism Act and it continues to administer a similar range of courses as well as short-term training programmes for SMEs and other institutes.

This will provide to train students at basic levels in the fast developing tourism and hotel industry. Schools leavers who are interested in a career in the Tourism and Hotel Industry and others who are already employed in the industry to improve their skills. A multi-disciplinary diploma designed to meet the increasing demand for multi-skilled travel and tourism professionals who are able to take responsibility for a wide range of complex industry processes by improving their knowledge through an interactive and application-oriented approach to face the challenges of the dynamic industry. The diploma provides practical and analytical competence in socio-economic, ecological, marketing, managerial, accounting, information technological and legal aspects of travel and tourism industry. SLITHM Anuradhapura Provincial College

The Anuradhapura branch of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management was inarguably established in 1992 by offering two courses for Front office and Housekeeping, using a space managed by the tourist board. This college is situated by the Sri Maha Bodhi Road within close proximity to the sacred Boo – tree & other places of religious & archeological interest. By 1994 SLITHM Anuradhapura offered courses in Restaurant and Bar and Cookery. Altogether, the courses were extended to four courses and languages. In 2005, SLITHM Anuradhapura was permanently established in Dharmasiri Tourist Information Centre in Sri Maha Bodhi Mawatha. By 2008 a training kitchen and a restaurant were established permanently to provide a holistic learning environment for the students. Currently, SLITHM Anuradhapura branch offers 4 courses in the areas; Cookery, Restaurant and Bar, House Keeping and Front Office to prepare students to be globally competitive in the hospitality and tourism industry. The college has enabled many unemployed youth in areas such as Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, etc to secure career positions in the hospitality industry. We have also planned to introduce short courses for pastry and bakery, tour guiding, one month curse, 13-year school course for students in government schools and language courses. The Anuradhapura branch of SLITHM was established in the year 1992, turning another chapter of SLITHM book.
