I rarely book cruise line excursions as they are overpriced and not usually of interest to me. I like to explore the port and experience what the locals like. I’ve been to Nassau a few times, but not in about 10 years.  When researching for this trip, I found Tru Bahamian Food Tours and it sounded like just what I was looking for, a 3 hour walking tour with local bites and drinks.

Booking online was easy, they even had an Apple Pay option. There was even an opportunity to identify dietary restrictions. I immediately received a confirmation email with all the necessary details, then a couple of reminder emails as our date approached. We met our guide right outside the port shopping area. The groups are limited to 12 people and we had a full group. We were the only cruise passengers, all other participants were vacationing on the island.  Our guide BrendaLee (Bahama Bre) explained the logistics of the tour, and we were on our way.

Our first stop was a local restaurant where we we served a plate full of Bahamian treats. This was pretty much a full meal so be prepared. We had conch fritters, stewed chicken, coleslaw, peas and rice, mac and cheese, and plantains. This meal came with a drink called switcha (lemonade) which you can upgrade to the drinks package and have an alcoholic version. We had pre purchased the drinks, but you are given the opportunity to add it during the meal.

Second stop was Graycliff for a chocolate sample, followed by a quick tour of the grounds where we purchased a couple of house made cigars. We moved on to Chillin, a conch stand where we we served conch sliders and received a tasting of a local sweet red wine. Next up was The Towne Hotel for Bahama Mamas and a visit to Mack, the hotel’s resident parrot. The last restaurant we Athena Cafe where we enjoyed conch chowder and a cocktail (which I don’t remember what it was). We ended the tour at a nearby souvenir shop where we were given a rum cake sample.

This tour provided plenty of food and drinks (too much for some), and our guide was fantastic, providing history tidbits along the way. The walking was easy, suitable for young children, but there are some small hills, so I’m not sure about those with mobility issues. There were times we were walking down the side of the street due to lack of a sidewalk (but this was rare). The only downside is because of our short time in port, I didn’t have time to shop, but that was no fault of the tour.

Great advice, glad to see this was enjoyable. I wqs eyeing this for my January 2024 trip to Nassau. This sounds right up my alley. I love trying authentic food from the local area. This sees like a very legit choice. thank you for the review!

Did you get any conch salad?  I love freshly made conch salad.

we did not but I’ve seen other reviews where they received conch salad instead of the chowder

Both are delicious!

  • Chevron down How much walking is on the tour? Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Our Bites of Nassau Food Tour is approximately 3 hours in duration and participants can expect to be standing or walking for the majority of the time. We cover 1.3 miles and walk at a moderate pace. The walking route includes hills and staircases and is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible or recommended for persons with severe mobility issues.

The walking route includes hills and staircases and is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible or recommended for persons with severe mobility issues.

  • Chevron down What if I have dietary restrictions or food allergies?

Please be sure to let us know if you – or anyone in your party – has severe food allergies (i.e.: shellfish, nuts, lactose intolerance, etc.) or dietary restrictions (i.e.: vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) when you purchase your tickets. As long as we know in advance, we can accommodate your dietary needs by providing tasty substitutions at each stop.

  • Chevron down Can I get a refund or reschedule my experience after I purchase tickets?

Tickets purchased are non-refundable. However, we will be glad to reschedule your tour to another available date or time. If your travel dates are unknown, we will convert the tickets into an e-certificate (which never expires) to use at another time in the future. The e-certificate is also transferable and may be redeemed by family or friends for their trip to Nassau if you’d prefer not to use it.

  • Chevron down Do I have to purchase tickets in advance? Can I pay cash?

Advanced ticket purchase is required over the phone or through our website with a credit card. Tickets often sell out in advance and we need to ensure our restaurant partners are prepared for food and drink orders. Our tour guides do not carry change or accept ticket payments in cash upon arrival.

  • Chevron down Do you cancel tours due to rain or other bad weather?

Our tours are held rain or shine. Tour guides are equipped with ponchos in the event of rain, but arriving prepared based on the daily forecast is recommended. If severe weather (such as a hurricane) does affect the tour being operational, you will receive a refund or an e-certificate to use at another time once tours resume.

  • Chevron down Does the tour end at the same place we begin?

Our Bites of Nassau Food Tour begins in Rawson Square off of Bay Street. Meet your tour guide behind the bronze statue in the middle of the public square. They will be wearing a Tru Bahamian Food Tours company shirt. This tour ends at Tortuga Rum Cake Bakery on Frederick Street.

Our Savor Old Nassau Dining Stroll begins in Pompey Square off of Bay Street. Meet your tour guide behind the colorful Pompey Museum to the east of the public square. They will be wearing a Tru Bahamian Food Tours company shirt. This tour ends at Bahama Barrels Winery at Graycliff on West Hill Street.

  • Chevron down How much food is served on the food tour? Are alcoholic beverages included?

All tours serve enough food equivalent to a hearty lunch.

  • Our Bites of Nassau Food Tour stops at 6 different restaurant locations for savory and sweet tastings as well as includes 1 alcoholic and 1 non-alcoholic beverage.
  • Our Savor Old Nassau Dining Stroll stops at 3 different restaurant locations for savory and sweet tastings as well as includes 3 alcoholic beverages.

If you would prefer not to consume alcohol, we will be able to provide an appropriate non-alcoholic beverage substitution.

  • Chevron down Do you run food tours on Sundays or public holidays?

We tour 7 days a week, including Bahamian public holidays, with the exception of December 25th, December 26th, and January 1st annually.

  • Our Bites of Nassau Food Tour is available for public and private tours between Monday – Saturday. It is not available on Sundays.
  • Our Savor Old Nassau Dining Stroll is available for public tours on Sundays and on Bahamian Public Holidays. It is also available Monday – Sunday for private groups of 8 guests or more.
  • Chevron down Is transportation included?

No – transportation to and from all tours or experiences is not included.

Detailed information for how to arrive at the meeting point will be provided at the time of booking. All starting points are conveniently located just a few minutes from the cruise ship port, local bus stops and Paradise Island water ferry.

  • Chevron down If a food tour is sold out, or a listed time does not work with my schedule, can I request another time?

We would love to know that you are interested in taking part in a tour that is currently not available on the calendar. Please email us at [email protected] so that we may consider adding a tour based on your specific date and time request!

  • Chevron down Do I need to purchase a ticket if I’m not eating on the food tour?

Yes – all guests must purchase a ticket whether they plan to partake in the food tastings or not.

Non-paying individuals will not able to join the tour for any reason. The ticket fees help cover the costs of all the food tastings and also to pay for your tour guide’s wages, who is offering valuable commentary on historical, architectural, cultural and restaurant information during our tours.

  • Chevron down Are gift certificates available?

Yes, gift certificates are available for both our  Bites of Nassau Food Tours  and our  Savor Old Nassau Dining Stroll and make a perfect gift for holidays, birthdays or any other occasion! To purchase or learn more about our gift certificates, please visit our Gift Certificates page or call us at: (1-855) 541-2889 or (242) 601-1725.

*NOTE – our gift certificates never expire!

  • Chevron down What do I need to bring on the tour?

In addition to a healthy appetite, we suggest you bring along:

  • wear comfortable, light clothing and walking shoes.
  • sun protection
  • your own bottle of water
  • cash gratuity for your tour guide
  • Chevron down Are bathrooms available during the tour?

Yes – bathrooms are available throughout the tour at selected food-tasting locations. Your guide will be sure to let you know at the beginning of the tour when the bathroom breaks will occur and remind you throughout the tour as well.

  • Chevron down Are tour guide gratuities included in the tour price?

Tru Bahamian Food Tours does not include tour guide gratuities in the cost of our tours. If you enjoyed yourself, gratuities in cash are greatly appreciated and accepted by your tour guide. The standard gratuity for a tour guide in the service industry is 15% – 20%.

  • Chevron down What if my cruise ship is rerouted and no longer comes to Nassau on the scheduled date of my tour?

We understand that there are sometimes last-minute changes made to cruise ship schedules and on occasion, a ship that is scheduled to dock in Nassau might arrive at a different time/date than listed or in rare cases, bypass the port altogether due to weather, an onboard medical emergency, etc.

We also understand that these changes are out of your control.

In cases where we can reschedule you to join one of our tours on another tour day or at another time – we will. In cases in which this is not possible, we’ll issue you a gift certificate (with no expiration date) for the full value of your tickets that you’ll be able to use any time in the future. In special cases and when neither of these options is feasible, we’ll assess the possibility of issuing a refund.
