U.S. News Insider Tip: Since parking is hard to find beyond the visitor center's main parking lot, opt for one of the park's free shuttles and pack a bag with a water bottle, a hat, sunscreen and a snack. – Catherine Parker
Grand Canyon Village is located close to the national park's most popular south entrance, on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

South Rim South Rim free
U.S. News Insider Tip: Get an early start when visiting the South Rim (before 9 a.m.); traffic is common at the South Rim entrance gates. Save time by taking the seasonal, free shuttle from Tusayan (the purple route) and purchasing your entrance ticket in advance. – Catherine Parker
According to the National Park Service, about 90% of Grand Canyon travelers visit the South Rim compared to the seasonal North Rim . South Rim visitors will find the majority of the Grand Canyon's most well-known outdoor activities, like hiking the Canyon Rim Trail and the famous mule rides. Compared to the North Rim, the South Rim offers more areas to explore, especially for visitors staying for more than one day. One must- see sight is Hermit Road, which is not accessible to private cars for much of the year and is popular with cyclists, runners and hikers thanks to its breathtaking viewpoints. Desert View , near the east entrance, is another area to visit anchored by the Desert View Watchtower , a historic building.

Mather Point Mather Point free
Located steps from the main visitor center, Mather Point is the first view many visitors see of the Grand Canyon. Travelers can take an easy, five-minute walk on its sidewalk from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center to the lookout. Its fenced overlook provides exceptional vistas of the rugged cliffs and trails below. If weather conditions are right, visibility exceeds 30 miles to the east and 60 miles to the west. Mather Point is also a popular spot to watch the sun rise and set over the canyon and was named after the first director of the National Park Service, Stephen Tyng Mather.
Recent travelers had nothing but good things to say about Mather Point, praising its easy accessibility and stunning views. They also noted that its location is convenient to restrooms and a cafe in the visitor center. With its close proximity to the visitor center, avoiding other tourists is admittedly difficult. Some reviewers recommended heading to other overlooks after Mather if you're hoping for thinner crowds.

Rim Trail Rim Trail free
Covering about 13 miles, the Rim Trail connects the South Kaibab Trailhead to Hermits Rest, passing Grand Canyon Village along the way. The Rim Trail is one of the most popular and easy trails in the national park because it offers the best way to see the South Rim's most acclaimed attractions and viewpoints. The mostly paved walking path (which is accessible in many sections) traces the canyon's edge, stopping off at favorite lookouts like Maricopa Point and Hopi Point. Another highlight along the Rim Trail is the section between Yavapai Museum of Geology and Verkamp's Visitor Center, which features the interpretative Trail of Time. This approximately 3-mile-long paved route incorporates a collection of rocks and exhibits that explain how Grand Canyon was formed.
Recent travelers enjoyed the variety offered along the Rim Trail, from crowded tourist points to more desolate stretches that allow for an escape to nature. Many said that the crowds are thick on the east side, near the gift shops, restaurants and lodging, though they thin out as you walk away from the village. Others were impressed by the accessibility of the trail, saying that much of it is open to wheelchairs and strollers.

Bright Angel Trail Bright Angel Trail free
U.S. News Insider Tip: The South Rim mule rides into the canyon are typically awarded by lottery. The North Rim mule trips go into the canyon, though they don't reach Phantom Ranch. – Catherine Parker
One of the trails that leads to the Colorado River, this steep path starts just west of the Bright Angel Lodge in Grand Canyon Village 's Historic District (the park's blue shuttle route will drop you at the trailhead). Because the trail provides spectacular views of the inner canyon, it's considered one of the park's most popular hikes.

Desert View Drive Desert View Drive free
This is the only scenic drive open to private cars on the national park's South Rim , and it offers staggering views of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.
From Grand Canyon Village , visitors can head east along Desert View Drive for 23 miles to find six developed canyon viewpoints, four picnic areas and five pullouts. Perched along the canyon's rim, the centerpiece of Desert View is the Desert View Watchtower , architect Mary Colter's 1932 building that incorporated design elements of the Ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau. Inside, the Kiva Room offers seasonal cultural demonstrations where visitors can learn about the arts and crafts of Native American groups of the area.

South Kaibab Trail South Kaibab Trail
Just as the North Kaibab Trail begins at the North Rim, the South Kaibab Trail begins at the South Rim and ventures into the Grand Canyon down to the Colorado River.
The 6.3-mile South Kaibab Trail offers 360-degree views of the Grand Canyon thanks to its open ridgelines. While the exposed trail promises incredible views, it also offers no protection from the sun or passing storms. Hikers will find the trailhead near Yaki Point, accessible via the free park shuttles. Day-trippers can get a taste of the trail and venture to Ooh-Ahh Point (a 1.8-mile round trip hike) or Cedar Ridge (a 3-mile round-trip journey). Beyond Cedar Ridge, the National Park Service cautions against day hikes due to lack of water and strenuous trail conditions. The NPS recommends hiking back up the canyon via the Bright Angel Trail instead of ascending the South Kaibab Trail.

Desert View Watchtower Desert View Watchtower
Located on the South Rim , the Desert View Watchtower is located about 23 miles east of Grand Canyon Village via Desert View Drive (close to the park's east entrance). Designed in 1932 by renowned Southwest architect Mary Colter, the Desert View Watchtower was built with native stones on the edge of the canyon. To blend in with the canyon and mimic the look of original Ancestral Puebloan buildings of the Colorado Plateau, Colter visited sites across the Southwest. Inside of the tower, travelers will find the Kiva Room, which features a fireplace, a rest area, a retail shop and views of the canyon. During the peak season, local artisans host demonstrations in the Kiva Room and visitors can observe craftspeople work on jewelry, pottery, rug making and more several days a week.
Recent travelers reported they enjoyed the east side of the Grand Canyon because of its reduced crowds. They also admired the intricate architecture of the tower itself, noting that the structure was well-maintained, interesting and beautiful.

North Rim North Rim free
U.S. News Insider Tip: The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is easier to reach from Utah and offers fewer crowds than the South Rim . Sometimes, lodging and camping reservations for the busy summer season are easier to reserve as well. – Catherine Parker
After experiencing the South Rim's desert-like landscape, first-time visitors to the North Rim marvel at its greener landscape and cooler temperatures. Even though it welcomes about one-tenth of the visitors of the South Rim, the North Rim offers many of the same amenities, including lodging, dining, mule rides and tours.
![trips in grand canyon](https://travel.usnews.com/dims4/USNEWS/e34ca0f/2147483647/resize/255x255^>/crop/255x255/quality/85/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftravel.usnews.com%2Fimages%2FMatteo_ColomboAerial-view-nature.jpg)
North Kaibab Trail North Kaibab Trail free
For travelers on the North Rim , the North Kaibab Trail is the area's only maintained canyon hike. The 14-mile (one way) trail leads all the way to the Colorado River. The trail can be grueling since its elevation is 1,000 feet higher than the hikes along the South Rim . In the summer, the hot Arizona sun is unforgiving to hikers (there is little shade along the way, making the journey even more difficult). In fact, park rangers recommend starting the hike before dawn or spending the night at the campground halfway to the Colorado River. For travelers who want a shorter hike along North Kaibab, the hike to the Supai Tunnel starts at the North Kaibab's trailhead and is about 4 miles round trip. Water and rest spots are available at several points along the North Kaibab Trail.
If this journey sounds too arduous, travelers can take a guided, three-hour mule-driven tour on this trail from May to October (Note: This tour does not go to the bottom of the canyon).

Horseshoe Bend Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend isn't located within Grand Canyon National Park, but it's a popular attraction that park visitors often make an effort to see thanks to its awe-inspiring, photo-worthy views.
As one of the most recognizable and visited places in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the Instagram-worthy attraction is located northeast of Grand Canyon National Park's south entrance. The Colorado River created the roughly 1,000-foot deep, 270-degree horseshoe-shaped bend that visitors hike a 1.5-mile hard-packed, accessible trail to see.

Antelope Canyon Antelope Canyon
Like its neighbor, Horseshoe Bend , Antelope Canyon makes for an excellent day trip for those staying in northern Arizona. Accessible by guided tour only, Antelope Canyon is a unique geological structure formed by water erosion over millions of years. The slot canyon reveals deep, winding, bright orange and red tunnels that visitors can explore on foot. The canyon is especially magical between late March and early October, when sun rays are at the perfect angle to shine in from above.
Guided tours of Antelope Canyon are available through a variety of providers, and most offer an upper canyon and lower canyon tour. The upper canyon is A-shaped, where the lower canyon is V-shaped and features five flights of stairs.

Navajo Bridge Navajo Bridge free
Within Grand Canyon National Park, there is only one way to drive over the Colorado River and that's via the Navajo Bridge on the northeast end of the park.
Starting in the 1870s, more people had moved into the area and needed to cross the giant chasm. At the time, the only way to cross the Grand Canyon was by ferry at Glen Canyon, named Lees Ferry. When the use of automobiles became more popular starting in the 1920s, officials in Arizona and Utah recognized the need for a bridge that allowed vehicles to safely travel over the canyon.

Hopi House Hopi House free
Mary Colter designed the Hopi House in 1905 in the style of a traditional Hopi dwelling. True to its original purpose, the Hopi House sells souvenirs made by Native American artists and craftspeople. The exterior features native stone along with traditional ladders leading to its different levels. Inside, visitors will find adobe walls, wooden beams and saplings on the ceiling.
Recent visitors praised the selection of souvenirs at the Hopi House, with the finest products made by Native American artists and craftspeople. Reviewers appreciated the transparent product labeling, which allows shoppers to see which items are mass produced and which are one of a kind. Others walked through the Hopi House to admire Colter's architecture and said it's a great place to escape an afternoon monsoon – a common summertime occurrence.

Grand Canyon Railway Grand Canyon Railway
Starting in the late 1800s, this historic railroad was originally used to transport ore from the Anita mines, which sit just north of Williams, Arizona. In 1901, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached the log cabin depot at the South Rim , making the national park accessible to the public. With the rise in automobile use, the trains lost business, and the last passenger train pulled into the Grand Canyon Depot in 1968. After an extensive restoration, the Grand Canyon Railway was reopened to tourists in 1989.
Today, this historic train carries tourists between Williams and the South Rim's Grand Canyon Depot. Along the approximately two-hour ride, passengers will see a variety of landscapes from the Ponderosa and Pinon pine forests to expansive prairies. In addition to providing a pleasurable journey, the train keeps 50,000 vehicles out of the park each year.

Grand Canyon Skywalk Grand Canyon Skywalk
One of the more controversial additions to the Grand Canyon's surroundings, the Grand Canyon Skywalk is a large, semicircular bridge with a transparent glass floor, allowing tourists to walk out 70 feet from the canyon rim and view the bottom from 4,000 feet above. The Skywalk lies outside of the park on the grounds of the Hualapai Indian Reservation in a development known as Grand Canyon West . Purists initially criticized the construction of the Skywalk, claiming it ruined the area's natural aesthetic. Still, the attraction has drawn millions of visitors since opening in 2007.
The skywalk is a considerable drive from both the South Rim and the North Rim (count on about four hours in the car from Grand Canyon Village ). As such, Recent travelers warned a stop at the skywalk is an all-day endeavor. Several people commented on the lack of value, especially in comparison to the South Rim. Las Vegas visitors without plans to make it to the South Rim seemed to enjoy their experience more than visitors who had seen the canyon in the national park.

Havasu Falls Havasu Falls
Lauded by travelers as one of the most beautiful sights in the area, Havasu Falls is a desert oasis, complete with blue-green water and gushing falls . The ethereal pools formed by Havasu Creek add an almost surreal quality to the red canyon backdrop. Though it's often associated with the Grand Canyon, this site is not located within the national park and is located on the Havasupai Indian Reservation.
Accessing Havasu Falls requires perseverance since visitors must first secure a three-night overnight reservation to enter the area prior to their visit. Reservations include the required access permit and a camping fee; $455 per person for the trip. No day trips are allowed, and campers need to be prepared with supplies to eat and sleep in a wilderness campground. There is a fresh water source and composting toilets at the campground.

Worth noting, this is not shown at the visitor centers on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon; this Grand Canyon Visitor Center is located just south of the entrance gate in Tusayan.

What people love about grand canyon tours.
Fabulous! I just returned from Bindlestiff's Grand Canyon & more 3 day tour. It was Fabulous! It provided a well-planned itinerary of fascinating places (Zion National Park, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon (optional & a must!), Monument Valley & the Grand Canyon. We were a perfect size group of twelve international travelers in a comfy van plus our delightful Tour Guide, Jade. We had enough time to immerse ourselves in each location and enjoy each experience. When on the road, Jade played upbeat themed music, weaved interested facts into a story and allowed quiet snooze time; plus the rest stops were well-spaced. On the first day we actually were in 3 states!!! Jade's yummy restaurant selections served the needs of each of the travelers' dietary requirements and the overnight accommodations were clean, comfortable & provided a nourishing breakfast. A special shout-out to Jade for her ability to ""herd cats"" while being attentive to each traveler's personal needs. She engaged with each of us in conversation and was delightful with a good sense of humor. A warm Thank You to Jade and Bindlestiff Tours!!!
Tour guide a great humanist able to reach out to all, domestic and foreign, to first form individual friendships that then led collectively to group bonding to experience nature's wonders. All members of our group became friends sharing the influence of our guide who understands human nature the way God would have it.
Loved the tour guide and bus driver

"Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

Grand Canyon
Vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful, the Grand Canyon is easily Arizona's most distinguishable landmark — a natural wonder you must see to believe. Stretching 277 miles from end to end, the Grand Canyon's rocky walls descend more than a mile to the canyon’s floor, where the wild Colorado River continues to carve away at the rugged landscape. Everyone should see the Grand Canyon at least once in their lifetime, and area businesses and outfitters make experiencing the canyon accessible to everyone.
![trips in grand canyon Grand Canyon](https://www.visitarizona.com/imager/s3_us-west-1_amazonaws_com/aot-2020/images/omer-nezih-gerek-ZZnH4GOzDgc-unsplash_bd09986aed1ba9b4b01bef1efd4b55c0.jpg)
From the Rims
If you are short on time or prefer to take in fantastic panoramas from paved viewing points, simply visiting the Grand Canyon creates memories that stick with visitors forever. Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim is the most popular visitor area, with plenty of places to eat, shop and stay the night in area hotels or campsites. The Grand Canyon Railway offers a fun family alternate for a short visit to the canyon. It operates turn-around trips from Williams to the South Rim year-round, with a three-hour window to see the canyon. Its annual Polar Express excursions are the stuff holiday traditions are made of. While less developed with fewer services and closed during the colder months, the North Rim is open from May to October and offers a unique and uncrowded way to explore the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon West is also a favorite for short visits. Its Skywalk takes Grand Canyon visitors out over the rim on a glass bridge that hovers 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. Choose your vantage point and get ready to take pictures you will never delete.
From the Canyon Floor
If your group leans more toward the adventurous side, find many ways to fully immerse yourself in this natural wonder of the world. Trailheads at any of the entry points lead to steep switchbacks that take visitors into the canyon. Commit to a few hours to hike to plateaus fully encircled by the canyon walls. To hike to the Colorado River on the canyon floor, plan to camp overnight before hiking back up from the river to the rim. Many experienced hikers join seasoned outfitters on grueling rim-to-rim hikes or multi-day backpacking adventures to fully immerse themselves in the splendor of the canyon. Outfitters also offer Grand Canyon white-water river rafting adventures on the Colorado River, which can last from half a day to two weeks. Helicopter tours, mule rides and mountain bike rim trails offer other memorable ways to see the canyon in person. Survey the adventure level of your travel companions, and then use the following resources to plan the adventure of a lifetime in the Grand Canyon.

'Grand' doesn’t cut it. Mind-blowing? That’s more like it.
At 18 miles wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long, nothing can ever prepare you for the vastness of the Grand Canyon. The views from the lookouts along the rim will take your breath away, but we like to go a little deeper — like hiking into the canyon depths and seeing the burnt-orange cliffs soar above you, falling asleep under spectacular night skies , and learning about the park's Indigenous history to connect with this ancient landscape. Make sure your camera's fully charged... you won't be able to put it down.

What is the Grand Canyon?
The Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s an 18-mile wide, 0.9 miles deep, and 277 miles long gorge carved by the Colorado River over 5-6 million years. Scientists estimate that humans have lived there since the last Ice Age.
How do I get to the Grand Canyon?
The closest airports to the Grand Canyon are Las Vegas and Phoenix, but you can also fly into Flagstaff (a one-hour drive from the South Rim) or Salt Lake City (about seven hours away by car). Public transport is limited, so the best option is to drive or join us on a tour.
Getting around the Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon has a free shuttle bus around the South Rim. The shuttles take you to the best viewpoints which are inaccessible to private vehicles.
There is also a Trans-Canyon-Shuttle service between the North and South Rims between May and October.
Guided bus tours also operate in the park, as well as taxi services between the South Kaibab Trailhead, Grand Canyon Village and Tusayan/Airport.
When is the best time to visit the Grand Canyon?
The best time to visit the Grand Canyon in terms of weather and avoiding huge crowds is between March and May, and September through November.
During the peak season (June-August), thousands of tourists flock to the park for the summer vacation. That being said, all hiking trails and park facilities are open, so it's the best time to experience all the park has to offer.
Temperatures drop in the winter and it snows in some areas, but it’s a great time to visit as there’s hardly anyone around and you’ll have the trails and views mostly to yourself.
What should I wear to the Grand Canyon?
No matter what season you visit the Grand Canyon, bring a sturdy pair of hiking boots or trainers with good grip, light and comfortable layers, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, a fleece, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Also, make sure you bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks to refuel throughout the day.
What animals live in the Grand Canyon National Park?
Some animals you might encounter include desert bighorn sheep, deer, coyotes, mountain lions, mules, gray foxes and bears. There is also a diverse range of reptiles, amphibians and birds.
Can I use my mobile/cell phone in the Grand Canyon?
Your cell phone will probably have coverage near the park’s main tourist hubs, but there will be little or no coverage once you start hiking past the canyon rim.
Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?
We are committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.
We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

So, you’ve decided this much: Grand Canyon National Park will be the end point of your next road trip.
The next questions are: where will your journey begin, and how will you get to such a remote part of the US ? Before you get to the varying terrains within the Arizona park itself, you'll experience jagged desert ridges, soaring firs and oft-snow-capped mountains looming in the distance – along with some super-quirky towns – en route.
Though there are private bus tour options from Las Vegas , helicopter flights from Phoenix and shuttles aplenty from Flagstaff , Los Angeles and even Salt Lake City , having a car at the Grand Canyon has major perks. With your own wheels, you can map your own adventure of both North Rim and South Rim stops as well as hikes to fill your day (or week) to the max.
So, as you balance flight costs, road-trip wishlists and pinpoint the perfect place to start and/or end your voyage, here are the best road trips to the Grand Canyon .

1. Las Vegas to the North Rim via Zion National Park
Best road trip for a bonus national park Las Vegas–North Rim, 275 miles (443km)
From Las Vegas, why not enjoy a bonus national park on the way to the Grand Canyon? While the southern route to Grand Canyon National Park deservingly gets a lot of love, the northern route opens up a seamless detour to Zion National Park , where vivid red cliffs and emerald pools await. The closest town to the park’s gate, Springdale, is a prime spot to recharge at Tex-Mex hotspot Oscar’s Café or the artsy Spotted Dog eatery . From there, it’s nothing but desert landscape and small towns – like Kanab – as you make your way to the Northern Arizona border before ultimately entering the park.
Planning tip: If the North Rim is your final destination, ensure you’re going during the six months of the year its roads are open. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed – encompassing all roads like key thoroughfare State Route 67 – between December 1 and May 14 annually.
2. Las Vegas to the South Rim via Kingman, Arizona
Best road trip for quirky desert finds Las Vegas–South Rim, 290 miles (467km)
There is no shortage of glittering casino lights and non-stop entertainment in Sin City, but after a few days and perhaps many free casino drinks, some visitors need a nature-infused reprieve. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is within day-trip distance . From wherever your Vegas home base may be, your South Rim journey will look like a capital U on the map, via Interstate 11, US Route 93 and Interstate 40.
Within 45 minutes of Vegas, make pit stops at the Hoover Dam and the antique shop-laden town of Boulder City . A drive along its main drag – Nevada Way – feels like Main Street USA, tucked worlds away from Vegas’ glitz. As for a detour, make a stop in Kingman, Arizona , which has an Insta-worthy stretch of Route 66 , including the Arizona Route 66 Museum and quintessential American joint, Rutherford’s 66 Family Diner .
Planning tip: Strolling down the Las Vegas Strip or Fremont Street , you will see tour companies aplenty offering Grand Canyon bus or helicopter journeys. If a pitstop-free trip to see the Grand Canyon is most desired, a 12-hour round-trip bus ride from organizations such as Canyon Tours or GC Tours may be your best option.
![trips in grand canyon Two people sit on the cliff above a vast curve in a river surrounded by red rock formations](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-01/USA-HorseshoeBend-Jordan-Siemens-GettyImages-627106231-RFC.jpg?w=1920&auto=format&q=75)
3. Flagstaff to the South Rim
Best road trip for a seamless, full-canyon adventure Flagstaff–South Rim, 80 miles (129km)
Situated approximately 150 miles north of Phoenix and just 90 miles south of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, Flagstaff provides about as frictionless a road trip to canyon country as it gets. Its airport – Flagstaff Pulliam Airport – is serviced by regional operators American Eagle and United Express, so be on the lookout for flight options. From Flagstaff, it’s a straight-shot north on US Route 89 and over to Route 64 into the canyon. While the views are far less multifaceted than some other regional options, you can still count on a sweeping, flat desert vistas.
Detour: If you have a few extra hours to kill, trek north to Horseshoe Bend near the border town of Page. While it technically isn’t in the national park, its canyon wizardry will leave you inspired and perhaps wanting to kayak in it.
4. Phoenix to the South Rim via Wickenburg and Williams
Best road trip for vineyards and historic towns Phoenix–South Rim, 236 miles (380km)
It can be oh-so-easy and tempting to take the Interstate 17 straight shot from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon but opt for the scenic route instead, which curls west of the interstate via US Route 93 and Arizona Route 89. After getting out of the urban bubble, hit the old west-vibey town of Wickenburg where its history is on full display at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum . From there, your next stop is the historic downtown of Cottonwood , which has wine-tasting rooms aplenty and the looming Tuzigoot National Monument , with panoramic views of Sedona ’s red rock-filled flair. Additional stops can include Flagstaff as well as Prescott, whose Sharlot Hall Museum includes a prior governor’s mansion within its confines.
Planning tip: In Cottonwood – if you’re looking to explore multiple vineyards and tasting rooms – there are local wine tour operators that can handle the transportation. A safe bet is Taste of the Valley Tours .
![trips in grand canyon A long straight red paved road through a desert landscape](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-01/USA-Mojave-Fabiomichelecapelli-GettyImages-95525733-RFC.jpg?w=1920&auto=format&q=75)
5. Los Angeles to the South Rim
Best road trip for desert tranquility Los Angeles–South Rim, 502 miles (808km)
Yes, a trip from Los Angeles to the South Rim is doable in about eight hours. But, along the primarily Interstate 40 stretch, you’ll want to make a few stops, so prepare for a long day or overnight journey. Among the more nostalgic stops is the Route 66 Mother Road Museum in Barstow, which features artifacts from local Mojave communities, rotating art exhibits and a healthy collection of Route 66 branded knickknacks. Before crossing into Arizona where Kingman and Williams await, pop into the 1.6 million-acre Mojave National Preserve to see Joshua trees and explore sandy dune trails.
Detour: To weave in a bonus state, detour north on Route 95 in the town of Needles to the Colorado River-adjacent town of Laughlin , Nevada. In Laughlin, you’ll find a smattering of casinos and lodging options.
6. Salt Lake City to the North Rim via Moab
Best road trip for national park hoppers Salt Lake City–North Rim, 622 miles (1001km)
Utah is national park heaven , and the Grand Canyon is often the final stop on a park hop that stems from a flight into Salt Lake City. If you take this route – along US Route 6 and 191 through Utah – you can experience the 2500-plus stone arches that await in Arches National Park and the sandstone swirls of Canyonlands en route to your final destination. Once you cross into Arizona, hit the Navajo National Monument as a bonus, which has a handful of self-guided tours through the rocky terrain.
Planning tip: Take a week-plus to do this trip and if you’d like to camp or stay in lodges in the parks, book as soon as the appropriate window opens (usually about six months in advance).

After being picked up from select Vegas hotels and traveling three hours on an air-conditioned bus, passengers get to spend up to four hours exploring the West Rim. A must-see lookout point at the West Rim is Guano Point, from which you can hike to Highpoint Hike and get a view of the Colorado River.
A lunch box, snacks and plenty of water are included with the tour. One unique feature of this outing is that you get to stop at the Hoover Dam for a photo during the bus journey (but keep in mind this stop is available seasonally). You can also choose from several upgrades, including a Skywalk admission ticket, a helicopter ride or a boat excursion.
Local tip: Because it's closer to the Las Vegas desert, this side of the Grand Canyon is the warmest year-round, with hot and dry summers, mild shoulder seasons, and occasional snowfall in the winter.

You can also stock up on snacks and souvenirs at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, since the tour only includes a box lunch and water. Or, upgrade your excursion with the guided walking tour add-on. Another historic part of the tour is the scenic drive along the famous Route 66, one of the first U.S. highways.
