13 Luxury Vacations That Are Surprisingly Affordable

These luxury vacations offer incredible experiences and five-star amenities without breaking the bank.

Planning a vacation is never an easy task, especially when it's time to talk about budget. But luxury vacations don't actually need to break the bank. We think it's time for you to take the trip of a lifetime without spending your life savings, so we've found 13 vacation ideas that will leave you in awe of the trip and the price.

Stay in a French Castle for $88

While some Airbnb listings — like Kylie Jenner's $50-million rental in Turks and Caicos — are only for the very wealthy, the hospitality industry also has hidden gems for the more budget-conscious traveler. Jet off to France and live out your royal dreams staying in a three-bedroom castle with a pool for as little as $88/night.

Go Glamping for Under $50 a Night

Stylish glamping stays from tents to private chalets are available at a range of price points, with several options under $100 a night — there are even eco-bungalows in Mexico's Akumal from $47 a night .

Find Your Joie De Vivre in Paris for Under $200 a Night

Experience the fabulous life of a French local with Paris Perfect . The vacation rental agency provides accommodation options at some of the most unreal apartments in the City of Lights with rates from less than $200 a night. You can even filter by apartments with an Eiffel Tower view, which start at $335 a night. Plus, since you'll have a kitchen, you can even save more by cooking some meals at home.

Fly Private at Economy Prices

A ticket through JSX , a semi private-flight experience at (almost) commercial airline prices, gives you access to a private terminal, where you can go from parking to takeoff in 15 minutes. No more being stressed out about getting to the airport early, waiting in long lines, or squeezing into a coach seat. The catch: Flights are only available between a few cities, including many on the West Coast and in Texas as well as Miami, Florida, and Westchester County, New York.

Spring for A Cheap and Chic Colombian Getaway

Colombia's port city of Cartagena seems to be on everyone's travel bucket list these days. Make that dream trip a reality with an affordable booking at Oz Hotel , a chic spot with nightly rates starting at $39 a night. It's located near the beach and also has a rooftop terrace with city views.

Stay in Dar es Salaam Instead of Zanzibar Resorts

Tourists — especially newlyweds — are quick to head to resorts in Zanzibar, Tanzania. While there's no denying the quality of these expensive seaside accommodations, don't forget that it's possible to have a similar luxury beach experience on the Tanzanian mainland for a much more affordable price. The Ramada by Wyndham in Dar es Salaam — with rooms from $147 a night — is located along the shores of Jangwani beach. It's a budget-friendly way to enjoy the waves of the Indian Ocean while taking in the nearby city center. The hotel also offers airport shuttles and late checkout .

Live It Up in New York City

Instead of squeezing yourself into Manhattan for an average, over-priced hotel room, venture out into Brooklyn for equally trendy neighborhoods — here's looking at you, Bushwick and Williamsburg — for much more affordable rates.

Book a Taste of Thailand

Opt for a stress-free yet unforgettable getaway to Southeast Asia on this Friendly Planet vacation across Thailand, a 10-day trip that will only set you back $1,849 a person. With roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and visits to some of the country's most historic attractions (such as Ayutthaya, an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site) included, this deal is hard to pass up.

Stay at a Five-star Resort on the Amalfi Coast for Less Than $300 a Night

This five-star beauty is elegant and historic. What used to be a 13th-century monastery has been converted into an Amalfi Coast hotel with some of the most spectacular views around. Almost all of the rooms look out to sea, and even though it's perched high up a cliff, it's only a five-minute walk to the harbor and city center. There's also a majestic Catholic church at the hotel for those looking to tie the knot. Rates start at $274 a night if you book direct, though you may be able to score an even lower deal on sites like Expedia.

Book a Standalone Casita in Mexico With Private Pool Views

A stay at one of the oceanside suites at Hotel Las Brisas in Acapulco, Mexico, is your chance to truly treat yourself without breaking the bank. Starting at $157 a night, you can book a casita with a private pool overlooking incredible views.

Stay in a Cabana on the Beach in Tulum for $200 a Night

Stunning accommodations and private beach access make Ahau Tulum worth visiting. Depending on the time of year, you could book a stay in one of the charming Bali Huts starting at $200 a night.

Relax on the Siem Reap River in Cambodia

Breathe easy with a stay at this intimate 36-room, five-star hotel alongside the Siem Reap River in Cambodia. All of the rooms at Jaya House River Park have either balcony views or direct garden or pool access, and it's just a short ride to Angkor Wat. Nightly room rates start around $109 a night, depending on the season.

Fall in Love With Franschhoek, South Africa

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

The sunny vineyards of Franschhoek, South Africa are a wine-lover's paradise, and planning a trip during the low season will help you score hotels at unbelievably low prices. As an example, check out the Franschhoek Boutique Hotel , which starts at $100 a night and is situated a few steps from one of the trolley stops that conveniently connects you to various wineries in the area.

No matter the destination, Travel + Leisure GO can turn your vacation dreams into reality with nearly endless reservation options to fly or stay near or far.

Bhutan: A Luxury Tour Around the Mystical Himalayan Country

Despite opening its doors to the world 50 years ago, Bhutan is largely untouched by external influences.

By Andrew Harris

travel weekly luxury

The pitch-perfect notes piercing the crisp morning air outside are so loud and crystal clear that it sounds like the flute sequence from a Puccini opera. Now joined by an equally unrestrained oboe player, my befuddled brain rewinds back to Bhutan’s Paro airport, where I stood in line behind a man whose cap read ‘Oriental Bird Club.’

With the typical duty-free shops and fast-food outlets supplanted by a Buddhist bookshop and photos of beautiful birds, tiny tranquil Paro is more redolent of a museum than an airport. I have, it seems, unwittingly flown straight into Birdwatch Central, but with wonderful wake-up calls like this, that’s not ruffling any feathers.

I eventually arrive at Amankora in Bumthang in central Bhutan, a nine-hour drive along a quiet yak-ruled road with endless loops around massive misty walls of green (70% of Bhutan is covered in forest) as it scythes its way through one of nature’s last remaining unmolested ecological outposts. It’s 50 years since Bhutan, sandwiched precariously between India and China, opened to the world after centuries of isolation, and 20 years since the first international brand appeared.

punakha view

That was Aman Resorts , after its mythical founder, Adrian Zecha, arrived on the inaugural Bangkok-Paro flight in 1989 with Drukair, Bhutan’s national airline. International carriers still aren’t permitted and, while private jets can land, all pilots must be licensed for Paro’s famously challenging approach. Amankora Bumthang, exuding an understated sophistication long synonymous with Aman, is gently nestled next to an ancient royal palace, the last of five Aman lodges to be constructed, all collectively called Amankora — a model since replicated by other luxury brands.

With its high-value, low-volume approach to tourism, the Land of the Thunder Dragon transmits a seductive siren call to an increasingly over-touristed world. Nearly the size of Switzerland, with less than a tenth of its population, it is rightly terrified of its cultural heritage being irreparably damaged by a rapacious tourist industry. Numbers are kept low by a daily $100 charge, the Sustainable Development Fee, which also helps preserve Bhutan’s unique culture and pristine landscape, as well as supporting free healthcare and education.

In otherworldly Bumthang, inside the 7th-century Jampa Lhankhang temple, the air hangs heavy with centuries of mysticism. Amid the multicolored, timeworn, dimly lit rooms where monks quietly replenish flowers beneath the enigmatic golden gaze of the Buddha, time doesn’t simply stand still; one wonders if it’s ever moved. My guide, Mohan, and I are the only visitors, and while it isn’t quite Seven Years in Tibet, it’s still light-years away from the packed buses and tourist junk plaguing the religious sites of more accessible Buddhist countries. A hundred bucks a day? That’s a bargain.

Mohan reels off a colorful litany of folk tales involving battles between good and evil, crusading heroic lamas, demonesses and consorts capable of assuming other forms, before pointing to a large hole in the stone floor where an evil force once resided. Apparently, evil forces came to feature here regularly. Confused? I know I was, as I stepped circumspectly around the hole, but these rich layered histories interweaving tantric Tibetan Buddhism with long held beliefs in local deities are deeply ingrained and probably best absorbed at one of Bhutan’s many festivals. Mountaineering was prohibited in 2003 precisely because local people deemed it offensive to the spirits who reside there.

amankara bhutan

A short hike (hiking is as popular as birding) through the forest brings us to the isolated Pema Choling nunnery, where I’m immediately confronted by rows of red-robed young nuns. I expect to be shooed away, but we’re quietly motioned up the corner and served tea, then presented with a large drum full of cookies. Can I take a photo? After a hurried consultation, yes, I can. Then, without warning, they lurch into their incantations and one of my more memorable impromptu travel moments. They all look so trusting, I want to warn them about the evil force of over-tourism. They’ll need more than tea and cookies if that ever breaches the kingdom’s defenses.

Dotted across Bhutan are the majestic, centuries old dzongs (fortresses), symbols of feudal power in a country that has only existed since the first king was crowned inside the Punakha Dzong in 1907. At the Trongsa Dzong, the largest, I was unbelievably, once again, the only visitor — apart from the monks that live there, one of whom gave me an apple as he showed off his phone.

The luxury lodges of the temperate Punakha Valley, underneath the domineering presence of the dzong, were joined in 2023 by luxury safari specialist andBeyond , unveiling its first Asian property — a sumptuously stylish nine-room lodge facing the Jigme Dorji National Park. The lodge exudes a laid-back opulence underpinned by an elevated standard of cuisine; it proved difficult to say goodbye. The secluded one-bedroom River House, in an idyllic spot next to a tumbling stream, surely rates among the most covetable romantic retreats in the world.

Punakha River Lodge

High above Thimphu, meanwhile, secreted among apple orchards across the valley from the Buddha Dordenma (one of the largest sitting Buddhas in the world), Six Senses’ ‘Palace in The Sky’ is, like Amankora, one of five lodges proffering the possibility of an interconnected journey. A modern masterpiece of wood and stone encased in soaring shards of glass, with a large spa next to a fabulous infinity pool, it presides serenely over the capital like a spiritual overlord.

Back down the hill, we find a little town strenuously asserting its credentials as a big grown-up capital city — albeit the only one in the world without a traffic light — where, amid the bustling building work, we stumble straight into an archery contest, Bhutan’s national sport. Two teams, 500-ft apart, all dressed in traditional gho (a knee-length robe), were firing arrows, along with the occasional insult, back and forth from bamboo bows with astonishing accuracy. A highly choreographed song and dance routine was performed every time the target was hit. Accidents, apparently, are not uncommon.

That relationship established by Adrian Zecha between HNW visitors and a unique fragile society wary of being overwhelmed is alive and well. To some, it’s extreme; a sledgehammer to crack a nut, perhaps. But until a better way to safeguard this mesmerizing sliver of Himalayan heaven emerges, just keep on swinging that hammer.

[data-uri="www.thecut.com/_components/clay-subheader/instances/clxj2hvcw000c3e7munhsc3vw@published"]{font-family:'Chap',Arial,sans-serif;font-size:12px;font-weight:700;letter-spacing:2.5px;text-transform:uppercase;line-height:18px} SO, YOU’RE GOING ON A TRIP?

➼ For Overnight Trips ➼ Weekend Trips and Excursions ➼ Anywhere From Five Days to a Week and a Half ➼ Two Weeks or Longer ➼ A Month or More

. For Overnight Trips

Whether you’re only traveling ten minutes away for a staycation or venturing to a nearby city for a day, overnight trips can be just as challenging to pack for as longer ones. Our best tip is try to be strategic about stowing all the necessities in a larger tote ba g.

iMangoo Protective Cable Organizer Case

Keep all your chargers and cords organized and untangled in one place. This little case makes sure you can actually find what you are looking for, especially in the depths of a big bucket-shaped bag.

Hill House Home The Ellie Nap Dress

The Nap Dress is comfortable enough for any road trip or train ride or even to sleep in. You really can’t go wrong — it’s like wearing your pajamas but still looking totally presentable. We particularly like the wrinkle-resistant navy dress for easy wear on the road.

Baggu Go Pouch Set

This three-pack of pouches might be one of The Cut Shop ream’s favorite purchases. Perfect for everyday use, the pouches are great for housing everything from makeup to dirty clothes to receipts. We always have one in our bags, no matter if we’re leaving the house for a night, an hour, or a whole week.

July Everyday Garment Tote

Perfect for event-specific travel, this tote doubles as a garment bag, protecting those special-occasion outfits. It has just enough space to also pack a pair of shoes you do not want to commute in.

Saie Slip Tint Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35 Sunscreen

One of the best tinted moisturizers out there, this option from Saie offers hydration and some SPF and will give you light coverage with a dewy glow. When you can’t bring your entire medicine cabinet, this is a great option that combines a bunch of products in a multistep routine.

HoodHealth Stainless Steel

Because hydration is always important, especially when you’re traveling.

Leeshine Ice Roller for Face and Eyes

Just because you’re not doing your skin-care routine in your bathroom at home doesn’t mean your skin should suffer. This ice rollers will fit perfectly in your toiletry bag and come in handy first thing in the morning.

Emi Jay Big Effing Clip

Sometimes on those quick trips, we push washing our hair an extra day (or three) so we can leave all our heat tools at home. With some dry shampoo and a cute hair claw , no one has to know.

. Weekend Trips and Excursions

Whether you are heading out of town for a wedding, trying to get away for a little R&R, or traveling for work, when it comes to packing a weekender or a smaller suitcase, organization is key.

Béis The Weekend Duffel Bag

There are so many options out there for weekender bags, but this water-repellent tote from Béis ticks all our boxes including the trolley pass-through pocket to attach to your suitcase and save your shoulders. This one is just over $100.

Guanda Car Vent Phone Mount

Most of the time, travel is associated with flying, but whether by choice or not, sometimes the trip involves hours of car time. A phone mount changes the game on a long road trip and is definitely safer.

Comrad Nylon Knee High Socks

For those longer flights where you are in a confined space and not moving around as much (looking at you, window-seat fliers), compression socks can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs and feet.

Loop Quiet Earbuds

Weekend trips can sometimes mean a jam-packed itinerary, so when you want to sleep, you want to snooze uninterrupted. Enter Loop, a reusable silicone earplug that allows you to get the ultimate fit (it comes in four sizes) so you can get in that power nap.

Le Specs Outta Love Sunglasses

Forgetting your sunglasses on vacation, especially when headed somewhere sunny, is a rookie mistake, which is why this pair from Le Specs is perfect to just keep in your weekend bag so you are never without.. They’re stylish, sturdy, and under $70 , in case you end up losing or breaking them.

Cadence Build Your 6 Bundle

Normally, travel containers are not the most stylish or multifunctional. But these Cadence capsules are both of those things. Unlike traditional travel containers, these can be used for anything from storing pills and skincare products to necklaces and hand cream. Plus, you can design your own set to include different labels and colors

Everlane the Relaxed Oxford Shirt

You can never go wrong with a classic button-up . It’s a must-have for any trip, especially a weekend one when space is limited. Wear it on its own, with a dress or pants, or as a bathing suit cover-up.

Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray

The Tower28 spray is our skin-care savior , and if you’re looking to pack minimally for weekend trips, this needs to be in the toiletry bag. Perfect for sensitive skin, it’s multifunctional, and a spritz delivers a refreshing dose of hydration and soothes stressed-out skin.

Kindle Paperwhite

Not only do books take up valuable real estate in a carry-on, they add a bit of weight too. A Kindle is so low profile and light that we do not even think twice about tossing it in our bag. It also saves us time doing the math on how many books we should be bringing on a trip because our next read is just a Wi-Fi connection away.

Ries The Essential Travel Vanity Bag

If you’re skipping the carry-on, this is an easy way to organize your beauty routine now that you’ve condensed it into teeny bottles and containers. The recycled faux -leather bag zips closed and features enough compartments to keep everything neat and organized.

. Anywhere From Five Days to a Week and a Half

A full-fledged trip that still limits you to a carry-on may be the most difficult to pack for. Europe,Cabo, our parents’ house, it’s all about making the most of the room you have, even if you can’t help but pack all your sunglasses , expensive skin care, and cute outfits.

Reformation Fantino Cashmere Collared Cardigan

This cashmere cardigan is amazing on its own or as a layering piece in case you get chilly en route or in your hotel room. When you’re packing a carry-on, the more pieces you have that you can wear multiple different ways, the better.

Dagne Dover Remi Glasses Case

Sometimes you just can’t decide which sunglasses to bring, especially if you are going somewhere extra-sunny. This protective case from Dagne Dover allows you to bring three pairs in a very compact and convenient case that is easy to hang up when you get to your final destination.

Away Bigger Carry-On

There is a reason you can’t travel without seeing one of these suitcases. It fits in the overhead bin of most major U.S. airlines and allows travelers enough room to store all their belongings while remaining light, sturdy, and sleek. Plus, it comes in seven attractive colors and has a USB external battery for those extra-long travel days. It is an essential for the majority of trips you will probably take.

Calpak Packing Cubes 5-Piece Set

We love using packing cubes when we need to keep a duffel bag from becoming total chaos or for just staying organized when we’re traveling somewhere where we will be doing a wide range of activities that require very different wardrobe options. These packing cubes from Calpak are cute and will help bring some order to a carry-on.

Aesop Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash

Whether you are in the window seat and do not want to disturb your neighbors to wash your hands or need to do a quick clean after pumping gas on a road trip, having some sort of hand sanitizer while traveling is a good idea. This one from Aesop obviously smells amazing.

. Two Weeks or Longer

It’s time to check your bags. Fill your carry-on with the essentials and save the rest for your suitcase. Opt for two-in-one products, space-saving containers, and clothes you can dress up or down. Pro tip: Don’t forget to invest in a luggage tracker to make sure your suitcase arrives when you do.

Uniqlo Wide-Fit Pleated Pants

Wearing trousers on a plane not only saves room in your suitcase but also makes you feel more put-together on the go. These comfy but tailored pants from Uniqlo can be worn casually or dressed up, making them the perfect pair to travel in for long periods.

Merit Flush Balm Cream Blush

A two-in-one product that is perfect for face and lips is a godsend on the road, and this Merit lightly tinted balm is highly rated. It is the perfect product to throw in your bag for when you want to do a real quick touch-up, no matter where you are. Most fragrances do not come in a three-ounce bottle, and it can be quite a risk to send a glass bottle in your checked bag, so it might be safer to opt for something like this. How This Travel Expert Plans A Luxury Weekend Trip for Less Than $250

T hanks to two years of punishing inflation, $250 doesn’t go as far as you might remember from your last vacation — and for many, that’s their travel budget’s limit.

I’m a Self-Made Millionaire: These Are the 6 Investments Everyone Should Make During an Economic Downturn

Read More: How To Build a Financial Plan From Zero

According to a new GOBankingRates survey of more than 1,000 adults, 28% of people spent $250 or less on their last trip. Considering today’s rising prices, can they pull it off again if they have a luxury trip in mind, even if it’s just a weekend getaway?

With a little bit of planning and box-checking, the experts think they can.

Cut Your Stay — and Your Costs — In Half

First, reconsider the costs and benefits of squeezing in the weeknight that launches most weekend getaways.

“I often find that a Friday night stay, especially if you are rushing after a work day, can be a bit of a waste of money,” said Tara Cannon, owner of the travel blog The Better Beyond . “Why pay big hotel dollars just to arrive in a rush and go straight to dinner?”

The solution? Make your weekend getaway one night and two long days.

“Arrive early in the day at your destination and stay late the following day,” said Cannon. “Call ahead to your hotel and request an early check-in. Most hotels do not mind if they are not fully booked. Likewise, request a late check-out the following morning, or ask the property to store your luggage for the day.”

Points, Miles and Rewards Can Go Farther Than Cash

If you don’t have a bank account full of cash, the right credit card can keep your expenses under $250, even for a top-shelf trip.

“Miles cards and rewards programs are the golden ticket to grabbing high-end hotel rooms and cheap flights,” said Zach Lazzari, owner of Cross Border Coverage .

According to Forbes, most travelers can leverage miles and points to double or triple the return of every dollar charged, far outpacing even the best cash-back rewards.

“I will wait for a big purchase to arrive in my life before signing up for a new card,” said Lazzari. “Then I sign on, make the spend requirements for the bonus payouts and typically have enough to cover a flight or really nice hotel for a weekend.”

While big sign-on bonuses can buy you a luxury trip on a budget, remember that most travel cards have annual fees that can run deep into the hundreds.

“The long game on rewards is generally not great but the upfront payoff is excellent,” said Lazzari.

Loyalty to One Chain or Airline Can Also Cut Costs to Near-Zero

Another strategy is to target a single brand for its loyalty perks instead of choosing a general travel rewards card.

“For instance, I recently used 35,000 Hyatt points per night to book a three-night all-inclusive stay at Rawah Ranch, a luxury rustic ranch experience in Colorado,” said Genni Franklin of Traveling Franklins . “The cash rate was $1,700 per night, but since I used points and there are no resort fees, I paid nothing for the stay. It will include food, drinks, and activities like fly fishing and horseback riding.”

The same premise applies to airfare.

“For flights, sign up for a travel credit card when the airline is offering a sign-up bonus,” said Kelly Johnson, owner and founder of Snap Travel Magic .

Johnson suggested Delta, which is currently offering up to 50,000 bonus miles plus 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles.

Set Alerts To Cash In On Errors

Companies sometimes make mistakes that you can cash in on if you’re ready to act when opportunity knocks.

“A mistake fare is when an airline to travel agency sells an airline ticket for far below the normal cost by mistake,” said Samantha Pearsall, travel and lifestyle blogger and founder of TheRamblingRenegade . “Mistake airfares are not super common but they happen. By setting up travel alerts through flight deal finders like Scott’s Cheap Flights or Thrifty Traveler Premium, you will be notified when mistake airfares pop up. You will have to act fast. These errors only last for a few hours at a time.”

Be Flexible and Avoid Peak Times For Your Destination

Prepare for a weekend getaway just as you would a full-fledged vacation — start planning well in advance, be willing to compromise on specific dates, and don’t go when everyone else wants to.

“This may seem obvious but it is much easier to find flight deals, hotel sales and cheap rental cars when you have multiple months to look through and multiple destinations to choose from,” said Pearsall. “Be flexible on when your vacation will be. In order to avoid the normally high price tag of a luxury vacation, you will most likely need to travel in the off-season of your destination, which will vary depending on the location.”

Pick Somewhere Close and Focus on What’s Free

If you’re only hitting the road for the weekend, consider actually hitting the road — after all, the best way to save on flights is to avoid them.

“First, choose a destination within driving distance to eliminate airfare costs,” said Sebastian Fitzpatrick of The Route Planner . “To elevate your experience, explore free or low-cost activities like hiking in nature reserves, touring art galleries, or attending wine tastings. Lastly, indulge in local cuisine at affordable prices by visiting hidden gems or taking advantage of happy hour specials. A luxurious weekend getaway doesn’t have to be expensive. It just takes a bit of ingenuity.”
