More shows returning for summer: 8 things to know about Las Vegas during the pandemic

Summer Hull

Editor's Note

Las Vegas , one of the world's most electric cities, turned the lights, fire and fountains back on last June after a several-month closure following the declaration of the pandemic. Since then, in the entertainment capital of the world, travelers have headed back to the slots and gaming tables — at least at most of the major resort casinos. Other smaller resort-casinos remain closed or only open on weekends when there are more visitors to the city.

Although the lights are back on, valet parking, congregating at a hot craps table and partying in a packed nightclub or pool still won't happen again in Vegas for a little while. But, things are steadily improving.

On March 15, 2021, the City of Las Vegas announced on its Twitter account that the vast majority of businesses in Nevada have been allowed to open their doors to patrons at 50% capacity or, for group gatherings, up to 250 people or 50% capacity (whichever is less). The city made this decision following weeks of falling coronavirus transmission and hospitalization rates. In April, we got word that shows are starting to return as well , just in time for summer.

If you're looking to head to the city for the first time since the pandemic started, you can breathe a bit easier as Vegas Smart gives an overview of COVID-19 safety protocols currently in place across the city which include:

  • Keeping your distance, at least 6 feet apart from others
  • Mandatory mask-wearing in public
  • Hand washing
  • Seek medical attention if you feel unwell

"By continuing to wear face coverings, practice social distancing & following all other mitigation measures laid out in our plan, we will put more Nevadans back to work in as safe a manner as possible all while welcoming more and more business back," stated Nevada Gov. Sisolak on Twitter March 12, 2021.

Much like at other mega-packed destinations, such as Disney World , a full reopening of Las Vegas isn't going to be fast or simple. Here are eight things to know about visiting Las Vegas right now.

What is open in Vegas?

Casinos were permitted to resume gaming operations on June 4, 2020, and most businesses, such as dine-in restaurants, retail shops, salons and even bars welcome a capped number of guests.

Reopened casino resorts

With more than 100 casinos in Las Vegas, it can be difficult to pinpoint which venues are currently open or closed. The American Gaming Association has a COVID-19 casino tracker where you can view which casinos are open or closed across the country through an interactive map.

For example, in Vegas, some of the open casinos include Treasure Island (now in the Radisson family), Wynn, Bellagio , MGM Grand, Mirage Las Vegas, New York-New York, Caesars, Circus Circus, The D, Golden Nugget, the Venetian, Planet Hollywood, Park MGM , NoMad Las Vegas, Cromwell and more.

Travel expert Lee Abbamonte visited Caesars Palace right after its reopening and told this to TPG: "...it's about 10% as busy as usual. Slot machines are open every other one, craps spacing people out, table games like blackjack have a max of three players it appears. All employees, dealers, etc. are wearing masks, few of any cops and maybe 10% of patrons." He went on to note that sanitizing stations are located all over the casino and hotel.

The Encore Resort and The Rio have reopened for daily stays. Note that Hyatt plans to renovate and reflag the Rio as multiple full-service Hyatt brands, including a Hyatt Regency.

Las Vegas pools are synonymous with spring breakers and parties. This year, pools will adhere to social-distancing guidelines with cabanas and loungers spaced out to maintain a safe distance. Additionally, pool areas will undergo a strict cleaning regimen throughout the day. The 50% capacity regulation by the City of Las Vegas will also be enforced.

At Wynn resorts, for example, loungers and cabanas will be thoroughly cleaned after each use and cabanas will be pressure washed each night; the towel desks, entry points and other counters will be cleaned at least hourly; and lifeguard posts will be cleaned at each rotation.

The Venetian, while not going into as much detail, reiterated that its pools are treated daily with antibacterial and antiviral treatments and that its pool chairs will be separated to comply with social distancing protocol.

MGM Resorts has a list of its current shows that are open, which includes David Copperfield, Carrot Top, Jabbawockeez, Brad Garett's Comedy Club and Thunder From Down Under. The company stated last fall that it spent the "past several months working closely with health experts and public officials to think through every aspect of these entertainment experiences including wearing masks, ticketing, seating, and serving concessions."

Additionally, Cirque du Soleil's Mystère will head back to the Treasure Island stage on June 28, and O at the Bellagio's first performance will be on July 1.

What hasn't reopened in Vegas

Some resort casinos.

The Las Vegas Strip is home to some of the country's highest-capacity hotels . For example, the MGM Grand and the Venetian each have close to 7,000 rooms, making them two of the largest hotels in the world. Given how massive these casino resorts are, there simply was no need to reopen all of the casino properties at once.

And even within hotels that do reopen, not all of the rooms may be open at once. According to the Los Angeles Times , Bill Hornbuckle, the acting president and CEO of MGM Resorts International, said the Bellagio would initially reopen with only 1,200 of the property's 4,000 rooms in service.

This was likely for a couple of different reasons. A phased reopening could help control the flow of people returning to the Strip and allow for social distancing, according to direction from the Nevada Gaming Control Board, as to not counteract progress made with COVID-19.

Some of the currently closed Vegas casinos include Fiesta Henderson Casino & Hotel, Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel, and Siegel Slots and Suites.

Nightclubs and dayclubs

While bars and restaurants are again open in Nevada, with some restrictions, nightclubs have not yet been permitted to reopen and remain closed with no set reopening date. As mentioned, the infamous dayclub pool parties are also still on hold for now.

Select restaurants

Not all restaurants within a given resort are open or open at the same time, so check carefully before assuming your favorite will be open in the immediate term.

Poker rooms

Many poker rooms will not reopen with the other gaming operations at this time.

The return of free parking

Not all of the reopened Vegas changes are bad. For example, MGM and Caesars group of casinos have announced the (much anticipated) return of free parking at their properties.

Before the March closing, self-parking cost as much as $18 per day at the MGM properties. But, as the MGM and Caesars properties (such as Caesars, Flamingo, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Aria and more) reopen, self-parking is becoming free. Valet parking is indefinitely suspended due to coronavirus concerns. There's no guarantee that free parking lasts forever, but Bellagio's website states that free self-parking is being offered as a way to welcome back guests, with no timeline regarding future plans or changes. The Caesars website simply says that self-parking in Las Vegas is free.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

On its May earnings call, MGM stated that "about 50% of the traffic coming into Las Vegas is from automobiles, and [it thinks] there will be some pent up demand and as the opportunity [to travel again] comes about, [it'll] definitely open up properties to maximize [its] cash flow."

While a Vegas with fewer fees will be a welcome change for all visitors, drive-in guests will likely comprise much of the first wave of visitors — and eliminating parking fees is a logical way to incentivize those visitors.

Gambling changes

Gambling is the lifeblood of Las Vegas.

The trend in recent years has been for Vegas to emphasize revenue from dining and entertainment, alongside gambling, but betting is still synonymous with Vegas. Casinos, however, simply weren't designed to keep people six feet apart from one another. With slot machines packed in side-by-side and groups of curious onlookers crowding behind blackjack and craps tables, casinos have had to make changes -- big ones -- to provide a safer environment for gamblers.

But, Vegas is committed to making it work.

The Gaming Control Board has set limits of six players per craps table, three per blackjack table, four per roulette or poker table and to either space out slot machine or remove every other chair. In addition, the board's plan limits a property's occupancy to no more than 50% of its normal limit.

While the Nevada Gaming Control Board has laid out a set of 18 specific guidelines and regulations for reopening casinos, individual properties have their own plans that were submitted and approved by the board before reopening.

Wynn Las Vegas has released a 23-page "Health and Sanitation Program" that outlines how Wynn properties (including the adjacent Encore) will operate.

New casino protocols cover five main areas including the casino cage, slot operations, table games operations, poker operations, and race and sportsbook operations. You can read the full list of protocols here , but to put it into perspective, the "table games operations" section alone has two subsections with 27 individual regulations and guidelines between them.

MGM has outlined a seven-step plan that requires masks for employees and provides free masks to guests, who are required to wear them. It also includes increased reliance on digital solutions to reduce touchpoints, such as digital room keys available via an online app, mobile check-in and menus available by scanning QR codes.

Wynn casinos have implemented a cleaning and sanitization plan that includes regular sanitization of guest counters, slot machines, card tables and card shufflers plus the placement of hand sanitizer throughout the casino floors, outside entrances and next to all ATMs.

At the roulette table, the wheel head, ball and dolly will be sanitized every time a new dealer enters a game. When a guest leaves a table game, the rail and seat will be sanitized. Each new shooter at the craps table will have the dice sanitized before picking them up.

Wynn guests must wear masks and are encouraged to sanitize their hands before and after each game they play. A chip-cleaning policy is currently being reviewed.

Another major Las Vegas casino resort, The Venetian, which includes the Venetian tower, the Palazzo tower and the Venezia tower, has outlined its "Venetian Clean" initiative , which includes near-constant disinfecting of table game areas, slot machines, electronic kiosks and chairs. And, like the Wynn, the Venetian has rearranged its slot machines and table games to allow for social distancing, enforce a three-player maximum per table and install hand sanitization stations and disinfectant wipes throughout the floor. Venetian also says that it will sanitize its chips "approximately every two hours."

What about masks?

Face masks will be a fixture in some casinos on the Las Vegas Strip for the foreseeable future.

The Venetian has equipped all its rooms with a "Venetian Clean" pack that will contain hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, gloves and a face mask. Bellagio seems to have a similar pack available for guests.

Wynn resorts will provide masks for both employees and guests, while The Cosmopolitan requires mask wearing by both employees and visitors.

Unsurprisingly, masks pose a unique challenge for casinos, who in the past have relied heavily on video surveillance for safety and fraud prevention. The Venetian said, "For added safety, masks that obscure the entire face are prohibited," and Wynn has said, "All guests wishing to gamble will be requested to briefly lower their masks for age and identification purposes in compliance with Nevada gaming requirements."

Related: Where to buy face masks

Temperature screenings and sanitation

Just like at nongaming hotels , casino resorts have boosted their sanitation measures to keep guests and employees safe. Wynn has installed "noninvasive thermal cameras" at each entry point, and, "Any person displaying a cough, shortness of breath or other known symptoms of COVID-19 or a temperature above 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit will be discreetly offered a secondary screening" by staff donning masks and eye protection.

Venetian resorts have the same procedures, with those who present a temperature over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit undergoing a further medical assessment and being directed to other medical care.

Of course, sanitization and disinfection are central to the plans of all major resort casinos. As mentioned, stations dispensing hand sanitizer, regular disinfecting of public spaces and other customer-facing areas, and access to disinfecting wipes and other PPE is located all around the resort and casino grounds.

No more self-service buffets

Vegas wouldn't be Vegas without the famous buffets, right? Well, it has to be.

It's unlikely we'll see self-serve buffets return in any near future. MGM resorts closed buffets at all its Las Vegas properties before states began shutting down, and since then they've been suspended elsewhere.

In a post-coronavirus world, buffets are the type of situation many people will avoid due to the large number of people congregating around -- and breathing on -- food in a confined space. In any buffet-type situation, such as a Player's Club, expect to see snacks and beverages served by staff upon request, as opposed to self-service.

Part of MGM's reopening plan is the suspension of self-service buffet food service as employees will serve guests. There will also be prepackaged food options available.

Last June, Wynn experimented with a new style of buffet, which followed the all-you-can-eat concept but guests ordered dishes from a server rather than helping themselves. However, that proved short-lived as The Buffet at Wynn closed a few months later.

"Based upon guest feedback, we found that many guests prefer a more traditional buffet experience over the served all-you-can-eat format," Wynn said in a statement "We will continue to assess the situation and will make a determination on reopening at the appropriate time."

But at least one Vegas mega-buffet may not have entirely given up on the concept of all-you-can-eat prime rib and chilled crab legs. The Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace was already planning a multimillion-dollar renovation when COVID-19 hit, and according to Eater Las Vegas, may have tweaked its renovation plans as it pushes forward .

Related: Buffets closing due to coronavirus

How cheap is a reopened Vegas?

Summer is usually a great time to find deals in Vegas, and we expect to see better-than-normal offers in the near term. Those who gamble may see targeted offers comparable to the deals of yesteryear when even moderately profitable gamblers were given offers of multiple free nights.

But will resort fees go on a hiatus? That would be nice but isn't the across-the-board approach so far. In fact, as coronavirus was worsening in the weeks before the shutdown, we saw multiple Caesars casinos increase resort fees . But the weeks before the shutdown also saw sub-$100 rates at the higher-end resorts that typically price at a few times that amount.

That said, Sahara is offering rates with no parking or resort fees to residents of many states and we've seen offers from the Cosmo with waived resort fees targeted at select guests.

Related: How to status match your way to an affordable Vegas vacation

Bottom line

Las Vegas has certainly felt the full blow of the economic catastrophe caused by the spread of the coronavirus even more acutely than many other destinations due to its reliance on bringing large groups of people together to mix, mingle, gamble and have a good time.

It cost the Las Vegas casinos millions of dollars per day that the doors were shut. There are reports that the MGM properties alone were going through more than $14 million per day during the shutdown.

So, while the path to reopening the casino resorts wasn't short or easy, the lights are back on and Vegas is ready for socially distanced action.

While commercial air service was slowly recovering on Friday after a technology outage caused thousands of flights worldwide to be canceled or delayed, the ripple effect from the disruption left airports crowded with passengers and airlines working to get planes and crews back in position.

“These flights, they run so tightly, so back to back, that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day,” said Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, in an appearance on CNBC.

The outage was caused by a flawed update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, whose software is widely used around the world. At United Airlines, for example, the outage affected technology used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and operate call-center phone systems.

Throughout Friday, messages that travelers posted on social media showed flights grounded worldwide, some terminal monitors down and crowds of stranded passengers waiting at airport gates and customer service desks. At airports in India and South Korea, some passengers stood in long lines to obtain handwritten boarding passes .

Are flights still grounded?

Since the initial outage, service is slowly resuming, but the number of global delays and cancellations has continued to increase throughout the day.

Worldwide, around 110,000 commercial flights were scheduled on Friday, and around 5,117 of those flights, or 4.6 percent, have been canceled, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. In the United States, the number of cancellations stood at more than 2,300 — or about 9 percent of daily flights — as of Friday afternoon.

Fewer than half of the flights today in the United States left on time, the others departing with delays of a half-hour or longer, according to Cirium.

Delays at some airports in the United States were well beyond an hour, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. The average delays at Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, the world’s busiest airport, were nearly three hours.

Which airlines are most affected?

In the United States, at least five carriers — Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United — temporarily grounded flights, according to the F.A.A .

As of about 4 p.m. Eastern, more than 830 Delta flights had been canceled, and more than 1,220 had been delayed. American was reporting more than 360 flights canceled and more than 1,040 delayed. More than 380 United flights had been canceled and more than 1,260 were delayed, according to FlightAware.

The Dutch airline KLM canceled around 41 percent of flights on Friday, according to FlightAware. It has begun to recover, but advises passengers to check their flight status online before traveling. “We urge passengers not to come to the airport if their flight is not departing or is severely delayed,” the airline said in a statement.

Why weren’t some airlines, like Southwest, affected?

Southwest, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways barely scrapped any flights on Friday. A spokesperson for Southwest said, “The outage did not directly affect our operations,” but did not elaborate on why.

Alaska does not use CrowdStrike, and its operations were “mostly unimpacted,” said Tricia Bruckbauer, a spokeswoman for the airline.

Which airports have been hit the worst?

In the United States, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta appeared to have the most flights affected by the outage, with a total of more than 590 incoming and outgoing flights canceled and more than 780 flights delayed as of midafternoon on Friday, according to FlightAware .

Many other airports, including hubs in New York, Chicago and Charlotte, N.C., also appeared to experience significant disruption. J.F.K. advised passengers not to show up to the airport without confirming flight status.

The outage also affected major airports in Europe. Several airlines at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam were unable to gain access to their check-in systems. The systems have since restarted, and the airport said it was working with airlines to “get all passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.”

London’s busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, said they were using contingency systems to get around the outage, but both were still reporting delays for almost half of their incoming and outgoing scheduled flights.

Hong Kong International Airport had to switch to manual check-in, but the airport reported that flight operations were not affected .

I’m flying today. What can I do?

Pack patience.

Delta , United , American , and Spirit have issued flight waivers allowing passengers to rebook without any additional fees. The terms and applicable airports vary. Generally, passengers are required to depart within a week.

Travelers can usually check itineraries through the airline’s website or app, but some travelers on Friday reported difficulties rebooking through the Delta and United apps.

You can also contact airline customer service by phone, though travelers posting on social media said that they had not been able to reach agents. But there are a few tricks you can try aside from the primary hotline: U.S. airlines have overseas customer service phone lines, easily found on the internet, and those agents can help too.

FlightAware can offer detailed data about delays and cancellations, and which airports are most affected, in real time.

What are my rights if my flight is delayed or canceled?

You may be entitled to certain compensation — such as airline-provided hotel or meal vouchers — detailed on the Transportation Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard .

The Transportation Department said the software outage is considered within airlines’ control and that airlines must follow through on their commitments to travelers, which for most United States-based carriers include complimentary ground transportation and accommodation for those affected by overnight delays and cancellations, as well as meal vouchers for waits exceeding three hours. Travelers should not expect to have this compensation offered to them, but are within their rights to ask the airlines for it.

“We have reminded the airlines of their responsibilities to take care of passengers if they experience major delays,” Mr. Buttigieg said in his CNBC appearance on Friday.

Passengers’ rights can differ for international flights . For example, in the European Union, cancellations or long delays may give you the right to a refund, a replacement flight and financial compensation. Passengers on flights delayed overnight may receive reimbursement for food, accommodations and ground transportation. (Travelers should hold on to any receipts for costs incurred.)

I have a cruise to catch. Will I get a refund if I miss the ship?

Cruise lines typically do not provide refunds, rebooking or any other concessions if flight disruptions cause travelers to miss their cruise departure, and the large companies are not making exceptions now.

But things look brighter for Carnival and Royal Caribbean passengers who booked their airfare through the cruise lines. Should they miss their departure, those travelers can expect benefits including coverage for flights, hotels and ground transportation to get them to the next port of call.

“Regrettably, air service disruptions — whether technological or weather — are beyond our company’s control,” said Chris Chiames, the chief communication officer for Carnival. “We always encourage our guests to purchase travel insurance, and today’s news is an important reminder of why.”

I have travel insurance. Am I covered?

Travel insurance companies are expecting an influx of claims, mostly for delays and missed connections, as a result of the outage.

One agency, InsureMyTrip , anticipated more than 1,600 of its customers could be affected by the outage, said Suzanne Morrow, the company’s chief executive. Policyholders may be entitled to coverage for their expenses related to delays, as well as coverage for any missed connecting flights, she said.

Any travelers hoping to file a travel insurance claim related to the outage should make sure to keep all their receipts or bills to show proof of purchase, as well as check their insurance plan or policy and file a claim right away.

How tech outage is impacting Las Vegas casinos, airport

Flight cancellations and delays lingered at Harry Reid International Airport. Local businesses in Las Vegas also seemed to be affected by the global outage.

Passengers wait in line for the Spirit Airlines ticket desk at Harry Reid International Airport ...

Harry Reid International Airport was full of tired, frustrated passengers as airlines faced tech outages Friday morning.

Flight Aware reported Friday morning that up to 225 flights were delayed and 81 canceled at the Las Vegas airport, while 27,075 flights were affected worldwide. American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines were all impacted.

By midmorning, FlightAware said there were 81 flight delays and 27 cancellations today at Reid while there were 30,163 worldwide and 5,728 delays within the United States.

At Reid airport, people slept on the floor with their luggage nearby and waited in long lines.

The flight disruptions appeared to be part of a global problem that has caused chaos for businesses and even led to Las Vegas’ NBC affiliate dropping local programming for hours late Thursday and early Friday.

George Kurtz, the CEO of cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which has been linked to the outage, said on X that the company was dealing with a defect in an update for Microsoft Windows systems. “The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,” he said.

Elsewhere in the valley

Last night, slot machines were down at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson, but operations at casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and downtown appeared normal Friday morning.

All gaming and hotel operations are normal at the Wynn, Encore, Venetian, Palazzo and Treasure Island. A slot tech at TI who has been on shift since 3 a.m. said nothing unusual happened at the property all night.

Caesars Palace operations are normal, with no waits to cash out. A small number of slot machines are down. The line at the front desk line is short and moving. Bars, restaurants and shops appear to be normal and operating.

The Sphere was temporarily affected by the outage or another issue early Friday, according to two Wynn employees who saw a blue screen with an error message on their way into work this morning.

At Red Rock Resort in Summerlin, video screens around the casino displayed a message that said “The operating system on your PC failed to turn off properly and needs to be repaired.” The resort otherwise appeared to be operating normally.

Similarly, Dunkin Donuts and Lifetime Fitness in Summerlin were open and operating but dealing with system problems. The outage is impacting mobile ordering at Starbucks locations in the valley.

At the airport

“I feel like I was robbed,” said Crystal Gibbs, who had come from Los Angeles to get a connecting flight to Ohio and was in a line that was not moving.

She said she had arrived at the airport around 8 p.m. and had gotten no sleep.

“We don’t have a plan,” she said. “We don’t live here, so we’re trying to figure it out.”

Stacey and Kelvin Mitchell, who were visiting from Killeen, Texas, said their Allegiant flight had been canceled. Stacey Mitchell said they’ve been told they could get a refund and rebook the flight, but that they wouldn’t get another one Friday.

She said she was concerned because her husband, who has diabetes, is dependent on insulin and they only had enough for Friday. They also had a disabled son waiting at home with other family members.

The airline didn’t offer any voucher, she said, but they got a customer service number. The hold time was two hours, according to Mitchell. After a while, they were told they wouldn’t be able to get a flight until Monday.

“Little did we know that Microsoft had this much power,” she said.

Sylvia Wood, who had come from Richmond for the NAACP’s 115th National Convention and booked a flight for 10 p.m. Thursday so she could have time to gamble, said she had gotten on her Spirit flight but had been told to get off, initially because of a smell on the plane.

A Spirit employee told passengers to go home, she said, but “Everybody said we don’t live here.”

She was frustrated, because she said if she had known about the issues ahead of time, she could have stayed at her hotel. She was eventually able to get another flight on Spirit for about 9:30 p.m. Friday, but had to pay for it separately.

“I will never — and you can capitalize never — fly Spirit again,” she said.

Sue Ciresi, who was flying home to Indianapolis on a Spirit flight, had been at the airport since about 7 p.m. Thursday after a flight from Reno. Her flight was supposed to leave around 11 p.m. She called hotels, but they were booked or also had outages. She closed her eyes, but doesn’t think she got any sleep.

“It’s been miserable,” she said, adding that her children were worried about her. She said she’d been told her flight would be rebooked, but hadn’t gotten information about a new flight because of the technology problems.

On X, Spirit blamed the problems on a “third-party vendor” and said it could not rebook passengers because of the outage.

“We apologize to our Guests for the inconvenience,” the airline said.

Allegiant also said on X that the outage was the fault of a third-party software system.

“We are working diligently with our provider to resolve the issue,” Allegiant said.

Rick Berrett, who was trying to fly home to Salt Lake City via Delta, said he travels frequently and is used to delays. But he said the problems Friday stood out. “This is the worst I’ve ever seen it,” he said.

Is CrowdStrike outage still affecting my flight? Updates from Florida airports

Flights are still seeing delays and cancellations Saturday after a global outage of cybersecurity service CrowdStrike disrupted airports , banks, hospitals and other businesses around the world.

The U.S. cybersecurity firm said an update had a defect that impacted Microsoft's Windows Operating System.

While most airports across Florida reported being back to normal operations, airlines are still reporting issues. Flight-tracking service FlightAware reported more than 2,500 delays and more than 1,000 cancellations of U.S. flights Saturday.

Delta posted on social media Saturday morning that it's "continuing operational recovery" after Friday's outage. "A travel waiver is still in effect for those impacted," the airline posted on the site formerly known as Twitter.

United also posted Friday night that some flights could still be delayed or canceled. It also informed passengers about its travel waiver, which lets travelers change their flight or connection city if needed.

Orlando airport

Orlando International Airport  said Friday it "has experienced  limited impact from the worldwide technology glitch that affected IT systems at several U.S. airlines."

MCO's most recent update came about 1:30 p.m. Friday, saying "delays/cancellations may continue, and we kindly ask all travelers to continue contacting their airlines for the latest updates."

MCO provided advice Friday asking travelers to:

  • Check with their airlines for the latest flight information
  • Allow extra time for check-in and baggage processing
  • Monitor the airport’s website and social media for updates

2,600+ US flights canceled: United, American Airlines resume service after global outage

  • A global IT outage caused delays and cancellations for air passengers around the world.
  • Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems.
  • The aviation sector is hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings.

William Sikora III was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Detroit on Friday morning.

“We are stuck at this airport,” he posted in a video on X at 6 a.m., zooming in on blue airport screens showing system errors. “United, Delta, America, all this stuff is down. People are just sitting here. The apps still say our flight’s on time because they can’t update information in the apps.”

Air passengers around the world faced delays, cancellations and problems checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in a  massive IT outage  that also affected industries ranging from banks to media companies.

Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were over 2,600 flights canceled and nearly 9,200 delays as of 5 p.m. ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . Most airlines were able to resume operations as the morning progressed, but many said they expected disruptions to continue throughout the day.

More on the outage: Global tech outage grounds flights, hits banks and media businesses

Megan Brown said Washington Dulles Airport was surprisingly calm, even as the airline industry was in turmoil. She said the airport was less crowded than usual, making for a quicker-than-expected security screening, and passengers seemed understanding about the disruptions.

"We just took the gamble and came here, and hopefully we’ll leave today,” Brown told USA TODAY by phone from Dulles. “There’s nothing you can do.”

Her family's 8:25 a.m. ET flight to San Francisco was delayed, but they were able to take off within a couple of hours. "A cheer just erupted as the gate agent said we are going to start boarding," she said.

Around the world, airports and airlines advised customers to arrive earlier than normal for flights.

Around 9 a.m. Sikora posted another video showing fellow travelers sitting on the floor and standing in the middle of a crowded Philadelphia International Airport terminal.

“Everyone is in the same boat. Just wandering and sitting,” he told USA TODAY.

Issues online: Instagram may be the best social app to get your flight issues fixed. Here's why.

The cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike blamed the global tech outage on a defect in an update for Microsoft Windows hosts.

“Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected," Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz posted on X . "We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can deliver the services their customers are counting on. As noted earlier , the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. There was an issue with a Falcon content update for Windows Hosts."

The aviation sector was hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings. Airlines rely on a closely coordinated schedule often run by air traffic control. Just one delay of a few minutes can throw off a flight schedule for take-offs and landings for an airport and airline for the rest of the day.

"The issue affected many separate systems, such as those used for calculating aircraft weight, checking in customers, and phone systems in our call centers," United Airlines said in a statement. "After pausing all departures overnight, flights resumed on Friday morning and we are working diligently to get our customers to their destinations."

Story continues below.

Are flights still grounded? How long will flight delays last?

"Ground stops and delays will be intermittent at various airports as the airlines work through residual technology issues," the FAA said, adding that it's working closely with airlines to resume normal operations.

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines and monitor the FAA's website for the latest information.

How to find the reason for flight delay

Customers can ask airlines why their flight is canceled or delayed, but the Department of Transportation confirmed that it considers the delays and cancellations caused by Friday's IT outage to be "controllable" by the airlines. While airlines may say they didn't cause the computer error, it means that the DOT will hold them responsible for upholding the commitments they've made to customers when it comes to policies like rebooking or hotel and meal vouchers as the mess gets sorted out. Every airline's policy is outlined on the DOT customer service dashboard.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics also tracks causes of delays and cancellations.

Airline waivers

Airlines are doing what they can to provide extra flexibility to those affected by the outage.

  • American issued a waiver for affected travelers covering all of its U.S. hubs.
  • Delta issued a waiver allowing all passengers traveling Friday to rebook their flights.
  • Frontier issued a waiver offering rebooking for travelers whose flights were delayed by more than 3 hours. Customers whose flights were canceled may opt for a refund or credit toward future travel.
  • United issued a waiver for select airports so passengers can make changes if their flights are affected, though a United spokesperson told USA TODAY that nearly all of the airline's flights depart or arrive in one of the airports covered by the waiver.
  • Spirit issued a waiver allowing customers who are booked to fly Friday or Saturday through any airport in its network to change their flights at no additional charge.

What happens if my flight is canceled?

Department of Transportation rules  require all airlines to offer customers a refund if their flights are canceled for any reason, but customers may be entitled to additional compensation if a cancellation is within the airline's control.

What should I do if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is experiencing a long delay, the Transportation Department suggests asking airline staff if they will pay for meals or a hotel room.

The DOT dashboard reflects airlines' official policies, but many carriers handle compensation for delays on a case-by-case basis and may provide vouchers or other benefits in some situations that are not formally covered.

What is considered a significant flight delay?

Each airline defines significant delays differently, but the DOT's dashboard identifies which airlines provide compensation for controllable delays of 3 or more hours.

For instance, all major U.S. carriers are supposed to provide a meal voucher for flights delayed by at least 3 hours for reasons within their control. Additionally, Alaska, JetBlue and Southwest offer credit or a travel voucher when a controllable delay "results in passenger waiting for 3 hours or more from the scheduled departure time," according to the dashboard.

How to file compensation for a delayed flight

Travelers seeking monetary compensation for delayed flights should file a claim with their respective airlines. Passengers seeking other types of compensation, like frequent flyer miles, may be able to request those through the airline's customer service.
