How to plan a journey

Wherever you’re going, we can help you to work out how to get there. Our journey planner shows you all the options for getting from A to B via train, even if your starting station or destination isn't an Avanti West Coast station.

• Simply enter where you’re leaving from and travelling to - Use our Journey Planner at the top of the page and start by searching for your departing station name. As you start typing you’ll begin to see relevant stations to choose from. Then, start a search for the station you’re travelling to and select your chosen station.
• Enter your intended date of travel - Choose your outbound journey date from the calendar and select the time you’d like to ‘arrive before’ or ‘depart after’. You can do the same for your returning travel, or select Anytime (Open Return) for added flexibility.
• Don’t forget to add your railcard, if you have one - If you’re travelling with a railcard , don’t forget you can save yourself at least a third off the cost of a full-price journey. All you need to do is select the type of railcard you have and how many, and you’re good to go.

Price Availability – Specific Routes

Promotional fares from London to Liverpool (from £25), London to Birmingham (from £16), London to Manchester (from £32) and London to Glasgow (from £46) are for advance single tickets only in standard class.

Promotional fares are available during off-peak times on Monday – Saturday only. Promotional fares are subject to availability, and availability will reduce closer to the travel date.

Customers may not start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on the ticket(s).

Bookings are subject to our usual terms and conditions for advance single tickets and the National Rail Conditions of Travel.

Certain blackout dates apply. Confirmed blackout dates for 2024 include but are not limited to; , 4 - 6 May, 25 - 26 May, 16 June, 22 - 23 June, 30 June, 24 - 26 August.

Book Early and Save 42% Message

Percentage saving shown is calculated when comparing advance single tickets, as advertised regionally within the Feel Good Travel campaign, with the average fare available on the day of departure (excluding railcard discounts).

This applies to the following advance single ticket only price points in standard class; London to Liverpool (from £25), London to Birmingham (from £16), London to Manchester (from £32) and London to Glasgow (from £46).

The individual savings per route when compared to the average fare available on the day of departure have been weighted by operating journeys, as of 1 April to 19 June 2023, and averaged across the four given routes. This provides a total combined average saving across all routes of 42%.

Journey Times – Specific Routes

Journey time shown represents a typical Monday to Friday journey.

Engineering works, strike action and other unforeseen delays (e.g. cancellations due to staff shortages) may result in a delayed or reduced service. Network Rail usually carries out engineering work at weekends or Bank Holidays, or occasionally early weekday mornings or late evenings. Standard Premium – Specific Routes

Standard Premium tickets are available as a fixed price paid upgrade on Standard Class tickets for the following routes; London to Milton Keynes (£10), London to Birmingham (£15), London to Manchester/Liverpool/Preston (£25), London to Glasgow (£30).

Standard Premium is available to book in advance via the Avanti West Coast website or app, or on the train via the Train Manager, with a valid Standard Class ticket.

Standard Premium tickets are subject to availability and are available only on Avanti West Coast services running on Pendolino fleets, for which it is available on over 95% of services.

It is not currently available on Voyager or Hitachi fleets.

From Monday to Saturday, there will be changes on our West Coastway route. This is to improve the reliability of our service in this area and to provide faster regional journeys between Brighton, Chichester and Southampton, and for connections to the West of England.  

The new Monday to Saturday timetable will be formed of:  

• Half-hourly service between Brighton and Southampton Central  
• Hourly service between Brighton and Portsmouth & Southsea  
• Half-hourly service between London Victoria and Portsmouth Harbour/Bognor Regis. These trains attach and detach at Horsham.  
• Half-hourly service between London Victoria and Littlehampton via Hove  
• Hourly stopping service (all station) between Brighton and Chichester via Littlehampton  
• Half-hourly shuttle services between Bognor Regis and Barnham  

Customers travelling between Southampton Central and London Victoria via Gatwick Airport will need to change trains at Barnham or Chichester.  

The Sunday service will be largely unchanged, except for some minor re-timing.  

Hemel Hempstead/Watford Junction and Clapham Junction/East Croydon   

All Southern services will run between East Croydon, Clapham Junction and Watford Junction only. Hemel Hempstead will no longer be served by Southern services.

On Sundays, services between Watford Junction and Clapham Junction will stop additionally at Wembley Central.

Epsom, Dorking and London Victoria via Hackbridge 

Monday to Friday, the 06:31 Epsom to London Victoria service will now start from Horsham at 05:49.  

The 17:25 London Victoria to Epsom service will be extended to Horsham.  

On Saturdays, all services between Epsom and London Victoria via Hackbridge will run with 8 or 10 carriages.  

Littlehampton and London 

The 06:05 Littlehampton to London Bridge, and the 17:33 London Bridge to Littlehampton service will run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only.  

Luton and Rainham

Some Luton and Rainham services will be re-timed to allow for better connections in the Woolwich and Greenwich area.

Peterborough and London Kings Cross 

There will be two additional peak services between Peterborough and London Kings Cross:  

• 06:35 Peterborough to London Kings Cross, calling at Peterborough, Huntingdon, St Neots, Biggleswade, Stevenage and London Kings Cross (arrives at 07:44) 
• 17:42 London Kings Cross to Peterborough, calling at London Kings Cross, Stevenage, Biggleswade, St Neots, Huntingdon and Peterborough (arrives at 17:42)
