Breathtaking Finland: Why Äkäslompolo and Ylläs are Must-Sees

Finland is a rich country. What have they got? They got Nokia phones and plywood. How’d they get so rich? Because they’re free. P. J. O’Rourke

Welcome to the Arctic Circle. Specifically, I’m speaking of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjarvi on opposite sides of the mountain where the Ylläs ski resort is located and in the Kolari municipality of Finnish Lapland. The snow is of a different nature here. Each flake is perfectly formed and glitters when it catches the sun, or the beams of a headlight.

It billows down from the sky like a little flying seed from a dandelion – the kind that you blow on when you make a wish. It falls right into place as if it knows where it is meant to go.

The snowflakes come together to build little blankets of powdered sugar, layer upon layer, like the sediments of a lake bed. They do this all over the ground, on every tree, every rock, every rooftop, and every fence post.

I marvel as they stick to my camera on their way down. “They really do each have their own shape,” I keep saying in awe, “they’re so beautiful.”

How have I lived my whole life without a real winter? I suddenly feel deprived rather than thinking smugly that I had the superior end of the stick by avoiding winters while growing up in Southern California. Yet while looking at this, I can imagine a reality where I spend every winter in this snow globe world.

The winter in Finnish Lapland isn’t just any winter, though. It’s different from the après-ski parties and giant slopes full of gondolas in Austria – which I love, too . But for those seeking something a little different, this is the place.

Finnish Lapland is special because it feels so incredibly secluded, so profoundly quiet, and so calmingly peaceful. It took coming here to understand what makes it so special, but I quickly realized that it’s a silence you can’t find just anywhere.

I feel it in the desolate desert , at the peak of a hiking trail that nobody else is on, and now, in the quietness of a frosty forest.

It’s in the ski slopes at Ylläs that are coated in clouds of snow, the cotton candy trees, and the feeling of being the only one there. It’s like a storybook fantasy world adorned in white and it’s so calming, you wonder for a moment if you could happily just remain there forever.

I know that in some part of the world it’s summer and there are warm beaches and sand so hot it burns your feet when you walk on it, but I don’t yearn for that at all in this sparkling white paradise.

The areas of Ylläs, Äkäslompolo, and the surroundings are just like the documentaries about the Arctic that I used to watch on TV years ago and think to myself that nothing could be that secluded yet simultaneously accessible by humans. Now I know, oh but it can!

The very idea of -30 degrees used to be terrifying to me, but then I realized that it was just simple fear, and in actuality it’s not that scary to be so cold. It’s actually a blessing. Where else do you get the stillness, the crispness of the air, the indescribable pinkness of the sun, and the kind of snowflake that crackles like Pop Rocks on your tongue when you lick it? Enjoying it is not complicated with the right outfit choice . In reality, the snowy surroundings are yours without much discomfort.

In most of the world, people loathe the winter, but here, locals will say it’s their favorite season, and I can understand why. The Arctic winter offers a beautiful stillness and an endless sunset as the sun rests just on the horizon for hours, never fully rising.

Plus, there’s an incredible amount of things to do there. You can Nordic ski, snowshoe (day or night, it’s no problem), hunt for the northern lights, ride on the back of a husky or reindeer sleigh, go snowmobiling, or go with my personal favorite, Alpine skiing.

Then after it all, when you come home to a cozy BnB with a reindeer steak waiting for you, you realize winter brings with it some special methods of enjoyment.

Like a sauna followed by a dip in ice water, and a glass of champagne in a hot tub thereafter. Where else can you fully enjoy 40°C-degree water while the stars come out and the snow falls around you?

So if you’re like me and the very thought of winter scares you, I bet this will change your mind completely.

Finland, thanks for showing me that winter is wonderful, too. You opened up my eyes to so many travel possibilities with just one trip.

Do it yourself:

Getting there: Fly into either Rovaniemi or Kittila via Helsinki. The flights are surprisingly convenient, especially through Helsinki.
Though there are busses and taxis, renting a car will give you ultimate freedom. Driving in that kind of weather is, shall we say, interesting but not impossible!
Eat: Reindeer and salmon are the most common offering. Besides the food at Aurora Estate, the best food I had was at Pihvikeisari where everything is local and homemade. It seems like it wouldn’t be good because it has a big ‘souvenirs’ sign and appears touristy, but it’s actually, delightfully, quite the opposite!
Stay: I can’t say enough positive things about Aurora Estate . They just opened a few months ago, but the owners are two young entrepreneurial women with an absolutely beautiful location and very cozy BnB, plus the food is incredible.

Breathtaking Natural beauty

Finnish Lapland is truly a winter wonderland. Visiting this artic haven in winter had been on our bucket list for a while. We stayed in the small village of Akaslompolo in Lapland and managed to do many adventurous things – most for the first time ever in our lives – which was thrilling and beyond magical. There is something suitable for every type of traveller, right from the straight-up thrill-seekers to the quiet bookworms. There really is so much to see and do, that picking a list of Top 10 is quite tough. But here are my top recommendations.

See the Northern lights

To be perfectly honest I planned this entire trip for two solid reasons, I wanted to chase the Northern Lights, and secondly – I wanted to escape to a place that was remote, beautiful, and experience thick snow at the height of winter, in Lapland. Though unfortunately, we didn’t catch the elusive Aurora Borealis we managed to have many wonderful experiences which really fuelled our sense of adventure.

Go Snowshoeing through a National Park in the dark

Even if you are not the adventurous sort, snowshoeing through the national park is not to be missed. We had the most sublime experience as we walked in pitch darkness as part of a small group with two local Finnish guides and just the light from their headlamps guiding us through the pristine white snow. Highlights of this trek were an introduction to Sami culture, an unforgettable meal of reindeer meat cooked on-site in the wilderness in a cosy hut hidden away deep inside a heavily forested area, and our first ever snowshoeing trek. A trek to remember, so many ‘firsts’, an unforgettable experience.

Relax in a Hot Sauna

Finland is famous for its hot saunas and no trip to Finland is complete with a trip to one. Our eco-friendly hostel has a beautiful sauna which we were lucky enough to have all to ourselves. We literally were the only people in the sauna at the time and it was the most relaxing evening ever. After our snowshoeing adventure through the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, it was a well-earned treat.

Stay in Log Cabin

The charm of waking up to see snow all around your log cabin is something that needs to be experienced. We stayed in a beautiful private log cabin fully equipped with its own kitchenette and en-suite. I can never forget how amazing it was to sit by the window and sip a hot cup of tea while watching the snowfall. It was like being inside a snow globe – pure bliss! Curling by a roaring fireplace after sunset and sipping on hot chocolate with a good book for company, soft music playing in the background, is what the holidays are for 🙂

Hop onto a Husky Safari

This is one thing I really wish we had done. But with so many options available this will probably have to wait for our next trip to Lapland. Imagine admiring the breathtaking beauty of Finnish Lapland as you ride a sledge through snow pulled by huskies. You can pick and choose from the many tour companies in Ylläs that offer husky safaris and even combine it with a snowmobile adventure ride.

Love Christmas? Then the Reindeer Safari is for you! Pretend you riding with Santa while Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer takes you through a magical winter wonderland on a sleigh

Dare to book a ride on a Snowmobile

We saw several groups of tourists who signed up for this activity and watched with envy as they practiced right outside the 7 fells Eco-friendly backpackers hostel. We stayed in a private log cabin at the hostel and spent some time in the lounge chatting with many of the enthusiastic folks who loved their adventure.

Get Adventurous with Winter Biking

Imagine biking through the Finnish wilderness under the night sky and stopping to gaze at the Northern Lights, if you are lucky. Feel at one with the universe as you listen to the Arctic silence – a very humbling experience. You can book a tour with a local guide who will take you into the forest or have the most unforgettable bike ride through the magical Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.

Hit the slopes at Ylläs, or Yllästunturi

Ylläs or Yllästunturi is the highest fell in Lapland with skiing lifts. They have stunning slopes and are extremely popular with tourists. Cross-country skiing is also a very popular option. There are many ski resorts located in close proximity and the local bus from the closest airport at Kitila airport has a regular route passing by within walking distance from the resorts. The closest rail station is at Kolari.

Experience Sami culture

During our snowshoeing hike through Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, our local Finnish guide gave us an introduction to Sami culture. Though it was a very basic peek into this beautiful culture, we really hope someday to meet the Sami and explore their traditions. Maybe visit a reindeer farm, pick berries and enjoy a Sami dinner. Fingers crossed to a visit to Inari village.

Looks like an awesome holiday! We recently went to Northern Norway for something similar and I quite agree with you about the breathtaking scenery, watching the snow, and generally enjoying ‘proper’ winter! We went reindeer sledding with Sami guides and I can totally recommend it. We didn’t manage to see an aurora either though – definitely a reason to book another trip!

Exploring Äkäslompolo: guide to the best things to do in Lapland in Finland, including excursions and activities.

Have you finally decided to go to Lapland but you have no idea where to go ?

Good news: you are on the right page. In this article I will tell you about a little-known destination in Lapland that I truly loved. The beautiful town of Äkäslompolo .

And how did you end up in this place in the middle of nowhere?

I will answer both questions. ÄKÄ-SLO-MPO-LO.

And I ended up there thanks to my friend Francesco who invited me to this small remote village where he works during wintertime.

Let me be straight, Lapland is not easy. It’s cold. Duh? You have to pull it together. Getting dressed with the appropriate clothing (which you can rent on site) takes time. Besides, Lapland is very expensive, especially during Christmas.

So when I got to Äkäslompolo I felt kind of lost and I must confess that Francesco was more of a caregiver than a guide.

And now I will try to be your “caregiver” and transfer to you the knowable knowledge that Francesco provided me.

But first let’s see where Äkäslompolo is and dive into the fun things you can do in this beautiful place in Lapland in Finland.

WHERE IS ÄKÄSLOMPOLO: A SMALL VILLAGE IN LAPLAND IN FINLAND.

Äkäslompolo is a small village in Lapland in Finland , about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle , almost on the border with Swedish Lapland.

The closest airport is Kittilä , while the closest train station is Kolari. Rovaniemi is about 175 km further south.

If you arrive by plane, you need to book a flight from Helsinki to Kittilä, and get a bus that takes you to Äkäslompolo in about 45 minutes.

The area around Äkäslompolo is the Ylläs area which is famous for its ski resorts (in Finland they practice cross-country skiing). Ylläs Hill with its 718 meters is the highest point in Finland.

Äkäslompolo is part of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park , the third largest national park in Finland.

Now let’s talk about the must do activities in Lapland in Finland.

Let’s find out!

1. HUSKY SAFARI.

Going on a husky sled ride is one of the most popular things on most people’s ‘”bucket list”.

If this is also on your list, you can get your pen ready because you will finally tick it off.

I was excited like a child!

Huskies are great animals! They are sweet, friendly and full of energy.

To be honest, I’m not a great fan of activities with animals. Like, I wonder all the time if they actually enjoy what they do, or if they are just used as a tourist attraction. So I usually just avoid them.

But with huskies it’s different because they actually need to be physically active and you can see a mile away that they are having a lot of fun.

So you can get on that sled with peace of mind. Huskies will have just as much fun as you do, and maybe even a little more.

One person controls the sled while the other sits as a passenger. My friend Erika and I took turns. Before leaving, they give you specific instructions on how to control a sled.

You can choose between a 10km and a 5km trip. We have chosen the 10.

2. REINDEER SAFARI.

Another animal that is immediately associated with Lapland is certainly the reindeer .

This activity includes a 4 km reindeer sleigh ride where you learn about these animals and what their herders do.

I learnt a super cool fact about their antlers! So the males drop their antlers after the mating season because basically they don’t need them anymore to fight with other competitors for mating. Like, I got my lady, I don’t care anymore! The antlers will then grow back for the next mating season. Crazy right?

During the reindeer safari, you can also feed your friend who kindly pulled your sled through the magical snowy forest. The sweetest thing ever!

3. HIKING ON SNOWSHOES.

A must-do activity in Lapland is for sure hiking on snowshoes in the snowy forest of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.

We hiked to Kuer hill, and the view from up there is truly beautiful!

I was totally amazed by the shapes of the snow-covered trees. They look like strange creatures from a fantasy world!

No, I didn’t take funny mushrooms I swear!

We hiked without snowshoes because the snow conditions were quite good. But always ask your guide. You don’t want to sink into the snow.

And never go off the beaten path obviously. Or you might really dive into the snow!

What seems to be the simplest activity ever was actually the one I liked the most. I just love hiking, and for me this was an absolutely new landscape where I felt in total connection with nature.

Another hike I did a couple of years later is the hike to Kesänkitunturi. This time we had to wear snowshoes and the hike was way harder and colder because we hiked during an Arctic storm! Crazy fun extreme experience!

4. E-BIKING EXPERIENCE.

If hiking was my favorite activity, the e-bike ride was for sure the most fun!

You can either rent it and move freely in the National Park, or participate in a guided excursion.

My friends and I rode freely, but obviously we wouldn’t have gone too far without our guide Francesco.

We biked at night, lit a nice little fire, toasted a couple of sausages, drank some red wine. A wonderful experience.

And of course we fell off the bike a thousand times. But don’t worry! Falling in the snow doesn’t hurt at all. It’s actually quite funny (especially when it’s the others who fall)!

5. SNOWMOBILE SAFARI.

Another very popular excursion to do in Finnish Lapland is the snowmobile safari .

There are the most varied options you can choose from. The excursions range from 2 to 6 hours and include different activities that you can combine, such as a visit to a reindeer or husky farm, and a sleigh ride with them.

6. NORTHERN LIGHTS SIGHTING IN LAPLAND, FINLAND.

Here it is. The Northern Lights . The reason why most people go to Lapland. Source of joy and pain.

Well, let’s talk about it.

Many people think that going to Lapland means spotting the Northern Lights.

It’s not like that.

I mean, spotting the aurora depends on a lot of things. First of all the KP , which is a sort of coefficient that indicates how high the possibility of seeing the aurora at that time in a given position is. You can download different Apps on the KP index, such as My Aurora Forecast .

Then the weather . There may be a magnificent aurora, but if the sky is cloudy, well that magnificent aurora is right above you but you can’t see it. What a bummer right?

And the moon . The light of the full moon is just like a beacon in the sky, so if there is light, you can’t see the aurora.

So, if you are quite flexible on the dates, try to go when these conditions are good, meaning, when the KP is high, the sky is clear, and there is no full moon.

A little complicated right? I know, unfortunately it is.

Obviously the more days you stay, the more chances you have. But of course we have also the super lucky one who arrives, stays one night, and spots the most beautiful aurora in the world, without even considering all these factors. Well! Life is unfair sometimes.

Then, one more thing I would like to add. The beauty of Äkäslompolo is that you don’t need to go hiking to spot the Northern Lights. Since it’s a remote village without lights, it has the enormous advantage that you just need to pop your head out the window to spot the aurora.

On the other hand, if you stay in a village that is a little more of a “city” let’s say, like Rovaniemi, you have to take part in guided excursions to try to spot it. Excursions which are usually very expensive, and absolutely do not guarantee that you will spot the Northern Lights. They usually offer you a second day of sighting (free or discounted) if you can’t see the aurora the first time. Or they cancel the excursion directly if they think there is absolutely no chance.

So if you decide to participate in a sighting excursion, don’t be miserable if you don’t see it.

Last thing. The igloo accommodation. You have probably seen these crazy igloo hotels with the greatest aurora above the glass roof. Very beautiful. Shocking. Life changing. But once again, there is no guarantee at all that you’ll see it. And these types of accommodation are very very expensive.

Again, if you choose to spend a lot of money for a night in a glass igloo as an experience in itself, regardless of the aurora, great. But if you do it only for that, you might want to rethink that.

From what I’m writing, do you think I’ve seen it? Yes, right. But, I’m confident!

I absolutely want to go back to Lapland, when I have more days available, and analyze KP, thermal currents, aerospace chemistry and nuclear engineering to get the right time! I won’t leave Lapland until I see it, and then of course I’ll let you know!

Update March 2021: I finally got to see it! At my third desperate try, here it is! The magnificent Aurora! Maybe sometimes, all you need is just a little bit of luck. And a friend that invites you over last minute because “get over here, tonight we have high chances to catch it!”.

Äkäslompolo has family-friendly attractions, such as Konijänkä’s Petting Zoo, where children can meet a variety of animals from Finland. The Varkaankuru Trail is an accessible hiking route for families who want to experience the landscape.

Fly to Kitilla Airport then take a bus to reach Äkäslompolo, which is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) away. The village is small enough to explore on foot and there are shuttle buses to the slopes. Äkäslompolo is a year-round destination, although it is particularly popular around Christmas time.

Verzorging Je verblijft 7 nachten op basis van logies. Transfers Transfertijd vanaf de luchthaven Kittilä: ca. 45 minuten. De check-in tijd bij de huisjes van Destination Lapland is 16:00 uur. Als extra service biedt Voigt Travel de mogelijkheid om tot die tijd je spullen op te bergen in een aparte ruimte van restaurant Rouhe, gelegen in het centrum van Äkäslompolo. Tijdens deze reis verblijf je in Äkäslompolo bungalows of Villa Armas bungalows. Äkäslompolo bungalows De receptie is bij het kantoor van Destination Lapland dat in het dorp van Äkäslompolo gelegen is. De authentieke houten bungalows liggen verspreid in het dorp Äkäslompolo, in een bosrijke omgeving. Vlak voor je deur beginnen de langlaufloipes. De vakantiewoningen zijn vrijstaand, 2-onder-1 kap of onderdeel van een rijtje en beschikken allen over een woonkamer met zit- en eethoek, televisie, dvd-speler, radio en houtkachel. Volledig ingerichte keuken met oven, 4 kookpitten, broodrooster, magnetron, vaatwasser en koffiezetapparaat (filterkoffie). In de badkamer vind je een toilet, douche en privé sauna. In een droogkast kun je je skikleding te drogen leggen en er is een wasmachine. Wifi is in de meeste bungalows aanwezig, je kunt dit bij reservering als preferentie opgeven. 42+11 m²: Eén slaapkamer met 2 losse bedden of stapelbed. Open vide met minstens 2 losse bedden. Villa Armas bungalows De bungalows zijn gelegen in het centrum van Äkäslompolo, ca. 200 meter van de skibus, ca. 200 meter van de restaurants en op ca. 800 meter afstand van de winkels. De receptie is bij het kantoor van Destination Lapland dat in het dorp van Äkäslompolo gelegen is. Wanneer je de bushalte of de faciliteiten te ver weg vindt, dan kun je altijd een taxi bestellen. 44+15 m²: De bungalows zijn geschakeld gebouwd en beschikken over een woonkamer met zit- en eethoek, televisie, radio en houtkachel. Volledig ingerichte keuken met oven, magnetron, vaatwasser, waterkoker, broodrooster en koffiezetapparaat (filterkoffie). Er zijn twee slaapkamers met 2 losse bedden. Op de vide van ca. 15 m² zijn 2 slaapplaatsen. Er is een badkamer met een douche en sauna en 2 toiletten. Tevens is er een droogkast waar je je skikleding 's avonds te drogen kunt leggen en een wasmachine. Gratis gebruik van plastic slede is inbegrepen. Uitgaansgelegenheden Afhankelijk van de ligging van de bungalow, maar in ieder geval op loopafstand of te bereiken per skibus, ligt het kleine centrum met een supermarkt, enkele restaurants en bars. Verwacht echter geen uitgebreide uitgaansgelegenheden want je bent in de Lapse wildernis! De afstand vanaf de bungalow kan variëren van circa 250 meter tot 2,5 kilometer. Houd er rekening mee dat de skibus alleen overdag (en beperkt) rijdt, dus de meeste gasten wandelen naar het centrum. Als je dit te ver vindt (of wellicht te koud) dan kun je een taxi bestellen. De kosten hiervoor bedragen (afhankelijk van de ligging van de bungalow) circa € 15 enkele reis. Supermarkt In het centrum bevindt zich een grote supermarkt en nog wat kleine winkeltjes en een apotheek. De afstand naar de faciliteiten is afhankelijk van de ligging van je vakantiewoning op 250 meter tot circa 2,5 kilometer. Vervoer ter plaatse De bungalows liggen op enige afstand van het centrum van Äkäslompolo en de skipiste. Houd er bij het boeken van deze prachtige accommodatie dan ook rekening mee dat je wat verder van het skigebied en de restaurants verwijderd bent. Er is een prima wandelpad en er loopt ook een langlaufroute. Uiteraard kun je een skibus nemen naar de skipistes. Mocht je toch liever zelf over vervoer willen beschikken dan kun je ook een auto huren voor een week. Je haalt de huurauto op bij aankomst op de luchthaven en levert hem daar ook weer in. Zo ben je vrij om te gaan en te staan waar je wilt. Houd wel rekening met een huurtarief van ca. € 650 per week voor een kleine personenauto (type VW Golf of gelijkwaardig), voor dit bedrag kun je echter ook behoorlijk wat taxiritjes maken. De definitieve datum en het tijdstip van de excursies wordt ter plaatse bepaald. Je krijgt alle informatie en de exacte planning op de dag van aankomst. Bij sneeuwscootersafari's nemen kinderen t/m 14 jaar plaats in een slede achter de sneeuwscooter van de gids.

Noorderlichtsafari (inbegrepen bij je reis)

Noorderlicht sneeuwschoenavontuur naar de watermolen (inbegrepen)

Sneeuwschoenwandelen is een echt Lapse activiteit en word je gratis aangeboden bij dit arrangement. De excursie begint met een bustransfer van ca. 20 minuten naar de Äkäsmylly watermolen, ten noorden van Äkäslompolo. Zodra je de sneeuwschoenen onderbindt en de mooie tocht door de wildernis start, ervaar je de uniekheid van deze omgeving. Samen met de gids loop je door diepe, verse sneeuw langs de Äkäsjoki rivier met woeste stroomversnellingen. Ervaar de stilte van de avond, het stromen van de rivier en de hopelijk heldere hemel. Zal het noorderlicht vanavond aan de hemel verschijnen? Aan het einde van de tocht krijg je een warm drankje bij een open vuur voordat je teruggaat naar Äkäslompolo.

Op heldere avonden is het mogelijk om boven de poolcirkel het noorderlicht te zien. Tijdens deze safari ga je per sneeuwscooter de wildernis in om het noorderlicht te spotten! Tussendoor zal er een korte pauze zijn met een warm drankje bij het kampvuur.

Op zoek naar het noorderlicht per fatbike

Per auto word je naar een stille en donkere plek gebracht; de perfecte uitvalsbasis om er met de fatbike op uit te gaan. Onder leiding van een gids maak je een tocht van ca. 15 km door winterse landschappen en langs plekken waar je met een beetje geluk de maan, sterren en het noorderlicht kunt zien. Halverwege stop je bij het kampvuur voor een warm drankje. De fatbikes beschikken over elektrische ondersteuning, die ervoor zorgt dat deze excursie voor bijna iedereen goed te doen is. Een sneeuwscootersafari is inclusief Engelssprekende gids, instructie en volledige uitrusting. Voor alle safari's geldt 2 personen per scooter (tenzij anders aangegeven). Je brengt een bezoek aan de Ylläs Huskyfarm, waar de gids je voorstelt aan de husky’s die hier leven en je leert hoe je een slee moet besturen. Dag op de rendierboerderij

Je gaat per transfer op bezoek bij de rendierfarm (ca. 70 km rijden). Hier leer je alles over deze dieren en over het leven op een rendierfarm. Je kunt de prachtige dieren voeren en je leert hoe je ze met een lasso kunt vangen. Ook maak je een korte rit van zo’n 1 km door de besneeuwde bossen. Daarna breng je een bezoek aan het rendiermuseum waar oude gereedschappen, kleding en kunst tentoongesteld worden.

Äkäslompolo is a village of 440 people (2011) in Finnish Lapland , in the municipality Kolari . It is a hub for travellers of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park both in the summer and winter and also part of the Ylläs ski resort.

As a ski resort in Lapland, the main season is during the schools' winter holidays in February and especially at Easter. Note that the town of Äkäslompolo is not directly on the slopes, but a few kilometres away, so if you're looking for a ski-in-ski-out experience, stay at Ylläs instead.

If you come in late autumn, midwinter or late spring, be aware of the implications, such as darkness, low temperatures or, in spring, flooded trails. There are services all year, although some shut down off season.

There are buses going to Äkäslompolo from Rovaniemi , Kittilä , Kolari , Enontekiö and Kemi .

The nearest airport is in Kittilä , there are several flights from southern Finland like from Helsinki and Tampere . Coming from Sweden, Pajala airport may be worth considering.

The nearest railway station is in Kolari. Off season you might have to take the train to Rovaniemi instead.

By car, drive along E8 to Kolari and 10 km farther north. Then turn to Äkäslompolo by road 940. You can also come from the east, via Kittilä and Ylläsj ärvi, driving the last 10 km by the slopes of the Ylläs fell.

The village is not very big: you can explore it by walking. In skiing season there are ski buses around the Ylläs mountain, single ticket is around €2. Matka.fi [dead link] includes information about some long distance bus routes which can be used for local travelling.

There are concerts in the larger restaurants and nightclubs.

67.589 24.215 2 Varkaankuru nature trail ( start at Kellokas ). A 4-km-long circular trail through the narrow Varkaankuru valley. The microclimate in the valley is peculiar and the vegetation is exceptionally lush.

Most people come here for skiing. There are downhill slopes at the Ylläs fell and also a lot of cross-country skiing tracks, combining with the tracks of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park . The downhill tracks are quite good for Finland, and very well maintained. The cross-country tracks offer wonderful journeys in the nice forest, and they are also well maintained. There are quite a few wilderness huts in the national park for those going for longer journeys, but they are often crowded in season.

The area is very good for hiking . There are many wilderness huts where you can spend a night on longer trips.

Travel agencies offer practice of Lappish activities like husky or reindeer sleigh trips, visits to reindeer farms and traditional Sami lávvus, as well as snowmobile safaris . The safari providers are near the supermarket on Sivulantie. Go and check out the different companies before booking your tours! Some providers might offer special trip and/or good discounts if booking more than just one activity!

In the lower part of the village there is a K-Citymarket where you can buy everything you need. Prices are a bit higher that in K-Citymarkets in south Finland.

There are restaurants, but most of them are only open seasonally. In skiing season all of them are open.

Near the slopes there are hotels, you can search and you will find them. If you are on a budget (and/or you want something traditional) you can rent a wooden cottage instead. If you really want to feel the wilderness you can rent a wooden cottage in the national park (office is in the town), it's cheaper but no electricity or water, heating is with fire, nature toilet.

Hetta by the Hetta-Pallas hiking trail through Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park . The trail is the oldest in Finland and quite popular. In winter you can ski more or less by the same route.

8 Seasons in Ylläs

Lapland offers great variety throughout the year with eight different seasons. In Ylläs there is activities for each of them.

Northern Lights

The green flames dancing in the sky, the Northern Lights, are always a breathtaking experience. The Northern Lights appear differently every time, so you never get tired of them.

Statistically, it’s possible to see the Northern Lights on two out of three nights in Ylläs. So, the chances are quite good as long as the sky is clear or at least some stars are visible through the clouds.

Seven fells of Ylläs

In ancient history, the seven fells of Ylläs were young and vigorous, reaching heights of several kilometers with sharp peaks, resembling today’s Alps. Over hundreds of millions of years, these mountains have undergone erosion and the harsh treatment of multiple ice ages. What remains today are the rounded roots of these ancient mountains.

The seven fells of Ylläs are Ylläs, Kesänki, Kukas, Kuer, Aakenus, Lainio, and Pyhä. Each of these fells is unique and worth exploring. The easiest to access and conquer during summer are Ylläs itself, along with Kesänkitunturi and Kukastunturi, as well as Kuertunturi in the winter.

Reach the top: All year round Special features: Views that stretch over 100km; Gondola

Yllästunturi fell is a landmark of western Lapland that can be spotted from far away. 719 metres above sea level and 500 metres above the surrounding terrain, the fell top presents views that stretch over 100 kilometres all over Lapland. By relative relief, Yllästunturi is one of Finland’s great fells.

You can reach the top comfortably by gondola all year round. In summer, walk on a hiking trail or on a ski resort service roads from both sides of the fell – Ylläs Ski Resort Ylläsjärvi and Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo – lead to the top. In winter skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers enjoy the fell landscapes.

Lainiotunturi fell’s steep slopes rise in the middle of the area. No trails lead to Lainiotunturi, but a crosscountry ski trail goes around the fell with several mellow resting spots on the way: the Hangaskuru lean-to shelter, Kotamaja wilderness café and the Karhukota day trip hut. In winter, you can spot backcountry skiers and snowboarders on the slopes of Lainiotunturi fell.

Special features: Part of restriction zone – avoid moving during snow-free periods

Framing the northern edge of the Ylläs area, the wide Pyhätunturi fell has no trails. The fell is best admired from the Kotamaja wilderness café, lake Pyhäjärvi shore or in winter the cross-country ski trail that goes around it.

Kindly note: the Pyhätunturi fell is part of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park’s Restriction Zone, where camping is prohibited and even accessing it in summer should be avoided. Thank you for not wearing the fragile fell nature

Special features: Pirunkuru Gorge

On the other side of lake Kesänkijärvi rises the rugged Kesänkitunturi fell. In summer, the Pirunkurun ponnistus trail provides breathtaking views over the lake and fells. This straight way to the top will get you winded if you keep a brisk pace. In winter the relatively easy Kuertunturi fell snowshoe trail is one of the finest in Ylläs! At the top, the snow covered trees frame the vast landscape. In summer there’s no trail to Kuertunturi fell, making Kesänkitunturi fell a feasible option, for example.

The long and horseshoe-shaped fell offers a feel for wilderness and natural quietness. In summer, the Aakenustunturi fell can be conquered via the Totovaaran Tunturireitti Trail that starts from the Totovaara parking area. Alternatively, start from the Pyhäjärvi parking and follow the Vareslaen Kierros Trail. The newest open wilderness hut in Ylläs, the six-person Aakenustupa, is positioned beautifully and is definitely worth a visit! In winter, a cross-country ski trail goes around the Aakenustunturi fell. Follow the trail to nearby Totovaara hill for amazing views of the chain of fells.

Special features: One of the easiest to conquer

A three-kilometre gentle ascent on the trail through a pine forest. Up the steepening slope to the treeline and the treeless fell top. That’s it! Kukastunturi fell is one of the easiest to conquer. Stroll to the top without breaking a sweat or get a workout on your way up – it’s up to you.

The views from the top reward the hike. In the north, peaks of Pallastunturi fell catches your eye and in the east, the Lainiotunturi fell is almost within reach. In the south, Yllästunturi fell rises as its most beautiful.

The summer hiking and mountain biking trail leads to the top and in winter, a xc ski trail, snowshoeing trail and winter biking trail take you to the highest point.

Ylläs History

Äkäslompolo village’s first permanent building was built on the west shore in year 1740. In 1875, Tano’s house was built on the site of the burned down house, which is still on the same site, at the beginning of the current Tiurajärventie road.

Tourism became more common in Ylläs in the 1930s, when the locals were surprised by the “empty skiers” who came further from south for fell skiing courses. Äkäslompolo was a small village of 14 houses and the inhabitants initially accommodated tourists in their houses. In Ylläsjärvi tourists were hosted in three houses.

The first accommodation buildings were built in the late 1940s in Äkäslompolo. When arriving to the village, the last 30km were skied and the goods were transported by horse or reindeer, until the road to the village was completed in the 1950s and a regular bus connection also began.

Mr. Jouni Kaulanen opened the village’s first grocery store in the basement of his house in 1950. Jouni Kauppa moved in 1980 to the building now known as Jounin Kauppakeskus and finally in 2008 to its current location.

First wilderness cafe was opened in Tuomikuru gorge where you can still spot remainings of a fireplace. Ylläs’s first “ski lift” was built in 1957 in Varkaankuru gorge – skiers were pulled up to the fell by the engine of a old Volkswagen car.

Ylläsjärvi village’s Eelin Kauppa (“Eeli’s shop”) opened in 1963 and village’s first accommodation building came a bit later in 1968.

Maintenance of the cross-country skiing trails began in the 1970s, when Parks & Wildlife Finland’s (“Metsähallitus”) started grooming some trails and also new ski/wilderness cafe Kotamaja was opened by Uuttu-Kalle. The maintenance of the ski trails as it is today dates back to the 80s, when the Äkäslompolo Tourism Association was founded.

Finland’s first national parks were established in 1938, and Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park was born at that time. The nature reserve initially covered the northern part of the fell chain, Pallas and Ounastunturi fells, and in 2005 the Ylläs area was merged with it. The National Park has been Finland’s the most popular for long time.

The journey from Äkäslompolo to Ylläsjärvi became significantly easier when connecting road Maisematie was opened in 2006. Previously, you had to drive from one side of the fell to the other via Luosu, making a long detour.

Nowadays, Ylläs is a mecca for all outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy nature with its huge network of trails, the best mountain biking trails and the longest downhill ski slopes in Finland.

Na een inspannende dag in de gezonde buitenlucht is het heerlijk thuiskomen in je eigen knusse bungalow met sauna. Je kunt in de volledig ingerichte keuken gemakkelijk zelf je maaltijden bereiden en een spelletje spelen met de kinderen bij de open haard. Trek er ook zelf op uit met sneeuwschoenen die je voor een aantrekkelijke prijs kunt huren of maak een paar mooie afdalingen in de grootste skigebied van Fins Lapland. Een bezoek aan Lainio Snow Village met kamers en een restaurant van sneeuw en ijs is leuk voor jong en oud. Kortom, een heerlijk relaxte week met veel privacy in combinatie met een afwisselend activiteitenprogramma! Verzorging Je verblijft 7 nachten op basis van logies. Transfers Transfertijd vanaf de luchthaven Kittilä: ca. 45 minuten. De check-in tijd bij de huisjes van Destination Lapland is 16:00 uur. Als extra service biedt Voigt Travel de mogelijkheid om tot die tijd uw spullen op te bergen in een aparte ruimte van restaurant Rouhe, gelegen in het centrum van Äkäslompolo. Wakker worden in winterwonderland®, dat is genieten! Je start deze dag met een van de oudste middelen van vervoer in het gebied ten noorden van de poolcirkel: de sneeuwschoenen. Uiteraard krijg je eerst instructies en na een beetje oefenen zul je zien dat het eigenlijk best makkelijk is. Je zult merken dat je met deze speciale 'tennisrackets' zelfs door diepe sneeuw kunt wandelen en met de gids trek je door de bossen en heuvels rondom Äkäslompolo. De middag is ter vrije besteding. Overnachting in Äkäslompolo of Villa Armas bungalows. Duur programma: ca. 1,5 uur Toon minder

Tijd om de paardenkrachten van stal te halen tijdens een geweldige sneeuwscootertocht door Winterwonderland®. De één rijdt en de ander geniet achterop. Kinderen t/m 14 jaar nemen plaats in een slede achter de sneeuwscooter. Je rijdt deels door besneeuwde bossen en over open vlakten. Halverwege stop je om foto’s te kunnen maken en kun je van bestuurder wisselen. De rest van de dag heb je wederom ter vrije besteding. Wellicht wil je gaan skiën; met 63 pistes en 29 skiliften is het Ylläs-gebied waar Äkäslompolo onderdeel van uitmaakt, het grootste skigebied van Fins Lapland. De bergen zijn natuurlijk niet zo hoog als in bijvoorbeeld de Alpen, maar de pistes zijn er heerlijk rustig en doordat er geen wachtrijen bij de skiliften voorkomen, ben je ook zo weer boven. Misschien willen de kinderen op les? In Lapland zijn korte lessen van 1,5 uur mogelijk die prima binnen het programma passen (ter plaatse te regelen nadat je je definitieve weekprogramma hebt gekregen). Tijdens de rondleiding bezichtig je niet alleen de kamers in het hotelgedeelte, met bedden van ijs en rendierhuiden, maar ook het ijsrestaurant en de ijsbar. Je brengt een bezoek aan de rendierfarm van rendierhouder Sami en zijn familie (transfer ca. 70 km) waar uitgebreid wordt verteld over de rendierhouderij in Lapland. Hoe het was in vroeger tijden toen de Sami nog rondtrokken met hun kudde en tegenwoordig, met alle moderne middelen. Het is nog steeds een belangrijk middel van bestaan in dit deel van Finland. Je gaat zelf de rendieren opzoeken in het bos waar ze bijgevoerd worden en de gids leert je hoe je het beste met de rendieren kunt omgaan. Ook mag je proberen een rendier met een lasso te vangen en maak je een korte tocht van ca. een kilometer op een slede, voortgetrokken door een rendier. Rendieren zijn statige dieren en je zult versteld staan van hun kracht: met een eigenwijze, wat koddige draf trekken ze de slee langzaam maar gestaag vooruit. Bij het kampvuur krijg je nog een warm drankje met koekjes aangeboden. Overnachting in Villa Armas of Äkäslompolo. Duur programma: ca. 3,5 uur Toon minder

Vandaag is het een span dolenthousiaste husky’s waarmee je op pad gaat! Je zult versteld staan van het enthousiasme van deze dieren, ze kunnen niet wachten tot ze mogen rennen en het gehuil is dan ook oorverdovend! De honden vinden het heerlijk om aangehaald te worden en je schiet hier vast de mooiste plaatjes van je kinderen met de husky’s. Als het sein tot vertrek wordt gegeven is het ineens rustig. Het is verbazingwekkend hoeveel kracht de honden hebben en hoe hard de slee kan gaan op de vlakke stukken! In de bossen komt het juist op sturen aan. Met de voetrem houd je de slee in bedwang en door je gewicht te verplaatsen op de glijders kun je meegeven in de bochten. Om de zoveel tijd ruil je van plek met je teamlid en kun je even uitrusten en genieten van het landschap. De kinderen nemen plaats in de slede. De gids begeleidt de tocht per sneeuwscooter maar houdt gepaste afstand om de stilte niet te verstoren. Aan het einde van de tocht krijg je in een Lapse hut een warm drankje met koekjes aangeboden. Tiny village in Finnish Lapland

The village of Äkäslompolo is located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, deep in Finnish Lapland surrounded by the peaceful old forests of the Pallas-Ylläs Nature Park.

It is situated next to a lake of the same name, north west of the town of Kolari. Äkäslompolo had approx. 400 inhabitants. It is surrounded by ski fields and cross country tracks and is a popular holiday cabin area. This small village holds a very special place in the heart of 50 Degrees North, with many of our staff visiting here with their own families to meet Santa in the forest.
