tour vietnam cambodia

Landing in Hanoi, we’ll meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation in the heart of the city. Meet up with your travel crew and get excited for the adventures to come.

tour vietnam cambodia

We’ll jump straight into the hustle and bustle of Hanoi today with a walking and rickshaw tour of the city. Soak in daily life in the chaotic capital and fill up on spicy spring rolls and tasty street food. This evening we’ll be heading out for dinner and drinks to see what Hanoi has to offer after dark.

tour vietnam cambodia

HA LONG BAY

From Hanoi we’ll travel to Ha Long Bay, where we’ll cruise the emerald green waters surrounded by limestone mountains, feeling like we’re not quite on this planet. The secret caves and coves will prove too much to resist, so we’ll jump into kayaks to explore further before settling down for the evening on our overnight boat.

tour vietnam cambodia

The rice paddies and vast limestone mountains of Ninh Binh await us, where we’ll be staying at a local homestay in cute bungalows right by the river. We’ll take to two wheels to weave through the rice paddies before taking a local row boat through the network of rivers and caves. We’ll finish our time here with a hike to the Dragon Mountain viewpoint.

tour vietnam cambodia

Beautiful, historical Hoi An will win you over. We’ll check in to our hotel, then this afternoon you’ll have time to explore, go shopping, or perhaps visit a local tailor to get a custom suit or dress made. Local fishermen will be our guides today teaching us the art of crab fishing. We’ll then take part in a hands on cooking class to become masters of all things Vietnamese cuisine.

tour vietnam cambodia

Today you'll try your hand at making an awesome Vietnamese souvenir - a lantern! Then we'll take a short bicycle ride through idyllic fields to the coast for a chilled beach day with some lunch at a cool beach club.

tour vietnam cambodia

HO CHI MINH CITY

Taking to the skies, we’ll head south to the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh. The rest of the day will be yours to explore as you wish.

tour vietnam cambodia

MEKONG DELTA

Today we’ll explore the incredibly lush green beauty of the Mekong Delta. See how locals live and work on the river, visit local villages, and stay tonight in a local homestay.

tour vietnam cambodia

The Cu Chi Tunnels are on the agenda for today. This network of hand dug underground tunnels played a crucial role in the Vietnam War, providing supply routes, hideouts and living quarters for soldiers. Arriving back into Ho Chi Minh City in the afternoon, we’ll be dressing sharp for our farewell dinner and party this evening.

tour vietnam cambodia

Country hopping from Vietnam to Cambodia via bus, we’ll cross the border and arrive into Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, in the early afternoon. We’ll then freshen up and head out for dinner.

tour vietnam cambodia

Today will start with a tuk tuk tour through the colourful, busy streets of Phnom Penh. We’ll then pay a visit to two locations that played a pivotal role in Cambodia’s sad and troubled history - the S21 Prison, and the Killing Fields. The stories and history you’ll learn here will be difficult, however also necessary to understand Cambodia’s past, including the brutal reign of the Khmer Rouge. This evening, dinner, drinks and a night out Phnom Penh style are on the agenda.

tour vietnam cambodia

Swapping city streets for laid back country roads, today we’ll travel to the peaceful countryside province of Kampot, our home for the next two nights. After settling in to our cosy traditional guesthouse nestled right by the river, this afternoon we’ll travel by kayak, weaving slowly down the river whilst soaking in the tranquil surroundings.

tour vietnam cambodia

Fun fact - Kampot is famed for producing some of the best pepper in the world. We’ll be putting that theory to the test this morning as we visit a pepper plantation. This afternoon it’s time for a big cook off as we learn how to make some of Cambodia’s most iconic dishes, before heading out on the river for a chilled out sunset cruise.

tour vietnam cambodia

KOH RONG SANLOEM

Never had Cambodia down as much of a beach destination? Just wait until you get to Koh Rong Sanloem. We'll travel by train and fast ferry to reach this paradisiacal island, where we’ll be checking in to our island paradise accommodation that is owned by the Chief of the village! This afternoon, feel yourself slipping in to island time as you laze on the beach, beer in hand and snapping up those island Insta pics at the Cliff Bar for sunset.

tour vietnam cambodia

It’s all aboard a private long tail boat this morning as we head out to uncover some of the island’s best snorkel spots. Expect to find yourself chilling out on secluded beaches, or exploring the colourful underwater world as you swim with tropical fish. This evening’s sunset will be the perfect time to reflect on another ridiculously awesome day together.

tour vietnam cambodia

Waking up on our last day in Koh Rong Sanloem, we'll spend the morning relaxing on the beach. We’ll then catch the ferry back to the mainland for dinner before boarding an overnight bus bound for Siem Reap. With fully reclining beds and air con, this is bus travelling in style.

tour vietnam cambodia

Arrive in Siem Reap in the morning. From there we’ll venture out to the rural areas and discover some traditional floating villages surrounded by lush rice fields, lotus flowers and flooded forests.

tour vietnam cambodia

Saving the best for last, today’s the day you’ll get to cast eyes on one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World. Built in the first half of the 12th century, Angkor Wat is one of the oldest and largest temples in the world. We’ll explore the site and learn the history with a local guide, and maybe even reenact our favourite Tomb Raider scenes as we visit Ta Prohm, a temple that featured in the movie.

tour vietnam cambodia

Your epic 21 day adventure comes to an end today. Those flying home will make their way to the airport, or keep living the dream and extend your stay in Cambodia or South East Asia with our help and the new friends you’ve made.

Frequently Asked Questions

tour vietnam cambodia

There’s never a bad time to travel in Vietnam or Cambodia. Most months of the year you will experience both sunshine and possibly some rain. It’s usually quite hot and humid most of the time, but it can occasionally get cold, especially in the north of Vietnam between November and February, so it’s always best to bring a couple of warm layers with your summer clothing.

The accommodation ranges from local homestays to hotels and overnight trains. All are a nice standard, clean and comfortable, however the homestay is quite rural so expect some bumpy roads, western but basic amenities and more bugs and wildlife in the area. On the islands in Cambodia, the community live a more basic life, so expect more basic accommodation and less reliable infrastructure.

Vietnam is a large country, and we experience a lot of it! So expect some longer travel days, with some loud motorbike traffic in the main centres. Roads and transport in Cambodia are relatively basic, so expect some bumps on the included overnight bus and possible choppy seas on the boat to the islands. Safety is paramount however, so you have nothing to worry about.

Delicious vegetarian cuisine is plentiful in Vietnam and Cambodia, however strict gluten free and vegan options can be harder as egg and fish sauce are common ingredients. But we will do our best to provide suitable options. A wide variety of Western meals is not common, however the authentic local food is outstanding! In Cambodia, you will find plenty of western cuisine, however gluten free or vegan options are available but less common, especially in the island communities, so expect fewer options on occasion.

When should I arrive for my tour?

It’s best to arrive on the actual start date. This is when most people arrive. There are no activities on the first day but the group gets together in the evening for a welcome dinner at around 7pm. Sometimes people like to arrive a day or two before the trip starts so they can do their own exploring or just have a bit of time to chill before all the fun begins. Our INTRO Travel App has all the important information about arriving into the country, your airport transfer and where to meet when you arrive. Please download it here for  iPhone  or  Google

Where can I update my arrival information for my tour?

Once you have booked your flights please log into the Manage My Booking area of our website and let us know your flight arrival details. If you are arriving early we can still arrange your airport transfer for you (excluding Japan). You can book and pay for any extra nights accommodation in the Manage My Booking area of our website. The cost and availability of extra nights will vary depending on which tour you have booked.

Which airport do I need to fly into?

You can find information on which airport to fly into and out of in the 'Arrival Info’ and ‘After Your Trip’ sections of our INTRO Travel App, which you can download here for iPhone or Google

Can I book pre-tour accommodation with you?

If you are arriving before the start date you can book extra nights at the tour accommodation. To do this, simply log into the Manage My Booking area of our website, add the extra nights and pay for them

Can I book post-tour accommodation with you?

Your group leader will book post-tour accommodation for you when you are on tour. Just need to let them know when you arrive.

How do I organise my airport transfer?

All of our tours in Vietnam + Cambodia include an airport transfer for when you arrive. Once you have booked your flights simply log into the Manage My Booking Area of our website and let us know your flight arrival details. A return transfer (after the tour) is not included, however your group leader can help arrange this for you, along with any other onward travel you need.

Our INTRO Travel App has all the important information about your airport transfer and where to meet when you arrive. Please download it here for iPhone or Google

Are flights included in the price?

Flights to and from Vietnam + Cambodia are not included in the price of the tour and will need to be booked separately. However if your tour has an internal flight as part of the itinerary, then this is included!

You can get a quote on a flight to your destination here .

When should I book my flight to arrive?

It’s best to arrive on the actual start date. This is when most people arrive. There are no activities on the first day but the group gets together in the evening for a welcome dinner at around 7pm. Sometimes people like to arrive a day or two before the trip starts so they can do their own exploring or just have a bit of time to chill before all the fun begins.

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. You’ll need to show proof of your policy to your group leader upon arrival (on your phone or printed). You can get a quote and purchase your travel insurance here .

Do I need a visa and can you arrange it for me?

Visa requirements vary depending on the country you are travelling to and your nationality. It’s your responsibility to check the visa and entry requirements for the country/s you will be travelling to. There is some information about visas in our INTRO Travel App, which you can download here for iPhone or Google

IMPORTANT: We cannot apply for your visa for you and strongly recommend that you check on the relevant embassy or consulate website for the country/s you’ll be travelling to well in advance of your departure, as requirements can change and some countries require you to apply for a visa before you travel.

How much spending money will I need?

All your activities, transport, accommodation and some meals are included in the tour, so you will mainly just need money for extra meals, drinks, shopping and onward travel.

The amount of money you’ll need depends on the tour you are doing. There’s information about how much money you’ll need for each tour in our INTRO Travel App, which you can download here for iPhone or Google

What’s the best way to access my money?

We recommend getting a Wise travel card, which will allow you to pay for things in local currency and avoid getting charged high foreign exchange fees by your bank.

Getting a Wise travel card is easy! You can get a Wise travel card here .

What should I pack for my tour?

Whether you have a backpack or a suitcase the main thing to keep in mind is not to bring too much stuff! We strongly recommend that you bring less than 20 kgs of stuff with you. If you haven’t got a backpack yet, try and get one that zips open along the side. There will be places on the tour where you can do laundry, so you don’t need to bring 16 pairs of shorts with you.

You can view a packing checklist on our INTRO Travel App, which you can download here for iPhone or Google

How many people will be in my group?

Our groups usually have around 12-16 people on them, usually aged between 18 to early 40's. We get people from all over the world on our tours, so you’ll get to bond with a wide range of travellers who all share that same passion for adventure! As long as you have an appetite for adventure and are happy bonding with people of all backgrounds, you’ll fit in perfectly!

How can I get in touch with my group?

You can reach out to your fellow travellers in our designated Facebook groups. We have a Facebook group for all our destinations, if you go to our INTRO Travel Community Facebook page you will be able to find the relevant group for your destination.

How can I get in touch with my group leader?

You will receive a ‘welcome email’ from your group leader approx. 2 weeks before your tour begins.

What if I'm travelling solo?

If you're struggling to convince your friends to join you on an adventure, you're not alone!

Travelling solo on a group tour can be one of the most exciting ways to experience a new destination, and you won't have to wait around for your mates to be ready. You leave yourself open to meeting amazing people, making new friends, and can keep yourself and your onward travel plans flexible.

The majority of our group members are solo travellers, so joining one of our group tours is a great way to meet people and make friends. Before your trip starts we'll put you in touch with the rest of your group so you can start chatting and get to know each other. And after the trip a lot of people continue travelling with the new friends they've made!

What if I'm travelling with a friend/s or partner?

Once you’ve made a booking just let us know who you’re travelling with and we can make a note that you are travelling together, and can put you in the same room.

A big part of the INTRO Travel difference is our after-trip support. Your group leader will spend enough time as needed to ensure you are totally comfortable and confident with where you’re going next. And can help organise and book whatever you need, including any transport, accommodation or trips you may want. We'll also provide 24/7 support and advice after your trip, and will always be there to help when you need it.

  • Sail through Ha Long Bay’s limestone karsts and island caves, visit a centre that turns the bay’s discarded trash into treasures and spend the night checking out the stars on an overnight cruise.
  • Travel like a local on a motorbike tour, riding pillion and taking in the historical pagodas, bridges and villages of Hue.
  • Watch the sun rising over Angkor Wat as it did over 800 years ago with your leader. Wander through the amazing ancient temples on a guided tour and with a three-day Angkor pass to cover your whole time in Siem Reap, you can explore this incredible temple complex as much and as often as you like.
  • Discover the countryside around Battambang on a bike ride around rural farms to meet with local producers, through an Intrepid partner and social enterprise that supports the local communities.
  • Experience life on water on a boat tour visiting the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake and understand the deep bond between the late and the local communities.
  • In order to see as much as possible, this trip involves some long journeys, including by overnight train where the amenities are shared and basic. For more about what this experience is like, see our blog post here:
  • intrepidtravel.com/adventures/what-to-expect-on-an-overnight-train-in-vietnam/
  • Depending on where you come from, the weather in Vietnam might be hotter and more humid than what you are used to. Please consider your suitability to the season you wish to travel in. Check out intrepidtravel.com/vietnam/weather-in-vietnam for more info.
  • There are some long travel days by both private and public transport (up to 10 hours on the road), including the days that you cross from Vietnam to Cambodia and Cambodia to Thailand. Your leader and local guides will assist with the border crossings, but plenty of patience is advised.
  • Some travellers enjoy Siem Reap so much that they decide they want to stay there longer, rather than continuing with the group to Bangkok. You are welcome to sign off the trip to enjoy more of Cambodia, however we aren’t able to reimburse any unused services or provide alternate onward travel arrangements.
  • At times your accommodation may not have continuous hot water. Most travellers don’t find this a problem however, and are often keen to cool down from the heat with a refreshing cold shower.

Xin chao! Welcome to Hanoi! Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm at the hotel and is followed by a group dinner at KOTO restaurant. This organisation is dedicated to developing the hospitality careers of disadvantaged youth. If you arrive early, there’s plenty to see and do. Consider booking the Hanoi Street Food Experience at 9 am (see urbanadventures.com/en for details). You'll get to sample delicious Vietnamese cuisine like a true local, stroll through the hidden alleyways and bustling markets and take in a spectacular view of Hoan Kiem lake from a secret café. Or maybe take it at your own pace and wander the Old Quarter to admire the city’s French-colonial architecture.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Hanoi - KOTO dinner
  • Hanoi - Women's Museum - VND30000
  • Hanoi - Museum of Ethnology - VND40000
  • Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh Complex - VND80000
  • Hanoi - Hanoi Street Food Experience Urban Adventure - USD40

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

To book an Urban Adventure before you meet your tour leader, go to urbanadventures.com/destination/hanoi-tours.

Travel by private minibus to World Heritage-listed Ha Long Bay, which is dotted with sandy coves, grottoes and 1600 limestone islands formed over millennia by wind and water erosion. Board a private boat and cruise the bay, exploring Surprise Cave and perhaps even enjoying a swim from Ti Top Island Beach during the warmer months. Access to Surprise Cave is via staircases. Once inside the cave the pathways are a little uneven and slippery. To end the day, spend an evening aboard the boat beneath the night sky. What better way to get to know your fellow travellers than an old school sleepover in an unforgettable location?

  • Overnight boat (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Cave entry
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with air-conditioning and private facilities. There's also a dining room and bar to enjoy lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Kayaking and swimming is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

There are restrictions on the number of boats that are permitted to stay in the bay overnight, sometimes resulting in a shortage. To ensure all Intrepid travellers can enjoy the experience of a night on the water, occasionally you will stay on a larger boat (with approximately 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case an Intrepid group leader will be present on each boat. The route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same.

Wake up on the waters of Ha Long Bay, and before you leave the memorable scenery behind, it’s time for one last stop. The Green Life Centre is committed to turning Halong Bay’s trash into treasure by collecting discarded items and skillfully turning them into beautiful handicrafts. Meet the team behind this important cause and learn how to transform rubbish into a useful and reusable bag. After your visit, return by bus to Hanoi. Arrive late this afternoon and enjoy free time until tonight’s train voyage. Be sure to grab a bowl of pho while you’re in town and slurp down this local specialty made from broth, noodles and meat. Maybe chill by Hoan Kiem Lake until you board an overnight train to Hue this evening.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - The Green Life Visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours, not including your overnight train.

Shared day use hotel rooms are arranged in Hanoi if you would like to freshen up before the overnight train (one room for every six group members).

Sleeper trains typically have four or six berth compartments with bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. Depending on the configuration of the group, you may need to share with people of different genders or passengers who aren’t part of the group. Your leader will coordinate this and give further information about the train.

Arrive in Hue this morning and transfer to the hotel. Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue holds the treasures of the country’s royal past. Enjoy free time in the morning to rest or explore. If you choose the latter (and who can blame you) the bustling Dong Ba Market is a great place to sample some of the specialties that once graced the Nguyen emperors' tables like banh khoai (royal rice cake). Reunite with the group to visit the war-damaged ruins of the Imperial Citadel, a sprawling city-within-a-city which contains the remains of temples, state houses and the emperor’s palace.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Hue - Imperial City entrance and guided visit

See Hue like a local – from the back of a motorbike! Straddle the saddle and whiz around town with a local guide, taking in historic and contemporary sights along the way. Stop at Thanh Toan to see the 18th-century covered bridge and villagers shopping at their local market. Visit the 17th-century active Buddhist monastery of Thien Mu Pagoda and see the car that belonged to Thich Quang Duc, the monk who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. For lunch, savour a vegetarian feast in a nunnery. Finish at the lakeside royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc before heading back to town.

  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc
  • Hue - Highlights & back streets by motorbike
  • Hue - Thien Mu Pagoda
  • Hue - Motorbike Tour Lunch

The motorbike tour has been assessed for safety and is closely monitored. To participate please ensure your travel insurance covers riding pillion on a motorbike up to 125cc. If you prefer not to participate, please let your leader know and they will arrange car transportation (cost included).

This morning travel by bus through coastal rice paddies and the spectacular Hai Van Pass. After a photo stop on the way, arrive into Hoi An. Recently declared a World Heritage site, Hoi An was a major international trading port during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today, parts of the beautifully-preserved town retain the feel of centuries past. It's also a shopping mecca, famous for its plethora of tailors. When you arrive, your leader will take you on a sightseeing walk through the Old Town to visit a handful of the city's major attractions. You’ll also be given a sightseeing pass so you can further explore select attractions at your leisure.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Today is a free day to explore Hoi An. Maybe browse the cobbled streets and art galleries or hire a bike and cycle through rice paddies out to Cua Dai Beach. Maybe browse for paintings, ceramics and colourful cloth lanterns in the town’s markets and preserved Chinese shophouses. If you’re craving a new look, you could pay a visit to one of the hundreds of tailors and get something special made. Hoi An is also known for its delicious regional food, so be sure to enjoy a meal at a riverside restaurant or perhaps partake in a cooking class.

  • Hoi An - Private Hoi An: My Son Discovery - USD77

Today take a short, early morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has a fascinating history and is arguably Vietnam’s capital of commerce and culture. After landing, take a sightseeing tour around the city by bus. Pass the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House, then stop in at the War Remnants Museum to discover some of the sobering stories of the 20-year-long Vietnam/American War.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum
  • Ho Chi Minh City - City tour
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace - VND40000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - A O show - VND1050000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon Street Food by Night Urban Adventure - USD36

Your travel time today will be approximately 1.5 hours.

This morning head out on a day trip to explore the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat to Ben Tre to visit the coconut gardens and stop at a local home to sample tropical fruits and coconut jams. After, paddle in sampans (small rowing boats) past coconut trees along the Mekong Delta. Take a tuk-tuk tour around the villages and learn about rural life and the industry created around coconut products like brooms and coconut fibre mats. Eat lunch at a restaurant in the heart of the Delta, sampling regional specialties such as the famous elephant ear fish. Cruise the major waterways to Ben Tre boat pier, then return by bus to Ho Chi Minh City. This evening, perhaps head out to sample some local specialties as a final farewell with your fellow travellers and leader.

  • Mekong Delta - Mekong Delta Day Trip & Village Tuk-Tuk Tour
  • Mekong Delta - Lunch

Enjoy a free day in Ho Chi Minh to get out and discover the city at your own pace. Alternatively, why not get an up close and personal history lesson on guerrilla warfare during an Urban Adventures tour to the Cu Chi tunnels. This underground network in the middle of the jungle was used by the Viet Cong during the war. Take the chance to climb into the tunnels and imagine what it would’ve been like to eat, sleep, work and cook – even go to school underground as conflict raged above. Return to Ho Chi Minh where there will be a meeting at 6 pm to welcome any new travellers joining you on the next stage of your adventure. Afterwards, perhaps get to know your new travel buddies over an optional group dinner.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum - VND40000

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers.

Travel by public bus across the border, through rural Vietnam and Cambodia and onto Phnom Penh. Cambodia's capital city is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. If you're looking for a tasty beverage when you arrive, head for a mojito on the rooftop or if you're in the mood for shopping, stop in at the art-deco Psar Thmei (Central Market) or travel out to Psar Tuol Tom Pong (the Russian Market) for the best range of local souvenirs.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours including border crossing and lunch stop.

On the bus journey across the border, you will exit Vietnam at Moc Bai and enter Cambodia at Ba Vet. Your leader will assist you with border crossing procedures. You will also have the comfort of being on the same bus throughout the journey with less hassle at the border crossing by changing vehicles. If you’d prefer not to travel by bus today, you are welcome to book a flight instead (at your own expense).

Today, confront Cambodia's tragic past on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), a former school which served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre. It's estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. You’ll also head out to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a stupa made up of some 8000 human skulls marks the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng. Afterwards, you may wish to learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history from an optional visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Wat Phnom, shrouded in myth, is equally worth a visit, as is the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collection. Cyclo tours around the city are a great alternative to walking and generally include the Central Market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong riverfront, the Independence Monument and Royal Palace.

  • Phnom Penh - The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
  • Phnom Penh - Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21)
  • Phnom Penh - Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda - USD10
  • Phnom Penh - Wat Phnom - USD2
  • Phnom Penh - National Museum - USD10
  • Phnom Penh - Cyclo tour - USD4
  • Phnom Penh - Khmer massage - USD8

The stories and history shared at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) are confronting and many travellers will find them upsetting. This is an important part of Cambodia’s recent history that we feel is important for travellers to know. If you would prefer not to join these activities your leader can recommend some optional alternatives. Some further information on visiting these sites can be found here: intrepidtravel.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields

Travel by private minibus to Battambang today. Break up an otherwise long trip with a visit to the pottery visit in Kampong Chhnang, and learn about the craft of pottery making at local workshops. Then continue to Cambodia's second-largest city. A pretty riverside town of French elegance, friendly Khmer people and beautifully preserved colonial architecture, this is a great place to explore on your own. Why not take part in an optional cooking class to learn the secrets of local dishes such as amok, Khmer curry and fried spicy chicken.

  • Kampong Chhnang - Pottery village visit
  • Battambang - Cooking Class - USD12
  • Battambang - Phnom Sampov bat caves - USD15

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Spend a bit of time riding around the countryside by bike, travelling out to the rural villages around Battambang. This is a great opportunity to get a closer look at what rural life means in Cambodia. Visit local families who have been producing agricultural products the traditional way passed down through generations, like rice paper, dried bananas, and bamboo sticky rice and stop by a Khmer house and relax and enjoy some coconut water while chatting about their life. The Intrepid partner for this activity is a local social enterprise that support training of local youth for their future career. In the afternoon continue by private minibus to Siem Reap, arriving in the evening, and relax as you prepare for your much-anticipated visit to Angkor tomorrow. Perhaps hit the markets for some delicious street food for dinner.

  • Battambang - Soksabike social enterprise countryside cycling & local snack tour

The distance covered by bicycle is approximately 24 kms. If you prefer not to cycle, please let your leader know and they will arrange remork (tuk tuk) transportation (cost included).

A very rewarding morning to get to Angkor Wat in the early hours to watch the sun rising over it as it did in the ancient times (weather permitting). Then Temple-hop with your local guide and make the most of your visit to the world-famous Angkor complex. The temples, dating back as far as the ninth century, were believed to represent the cosmic world and were set in perfect balance, symmetry and composition. The intricately carved bas-reliefs and architectural designs are mind-blowing and there are spectacular photo opportunities at any time of day. Watching a sunrise or sunset is a must. The ruins are scattered over an area of some 160 square km, but the main cluster of temples is close to Siem Reap, so there will be plenty of time to fully appreciate the great archaeological sites of Angkor Wat, Bayon and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm.

  • Siem Reap - Three day Angkor Pass
  • Siem Reap - Angkor Temples Guided Tour
  • Siem Reap - Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Temperatures and humidity can be high in Cambodia, especially walking around sights like the Angkor complex where there may be little shade. Be prepared by taking plenty of drink breaks and wearing appropriate skin protection. Some travellers find an umbrella handy to keep the sun off.

Continue your explorations of the Angkor complex this morning. In the afternoon, embark on a private local boat discover the floating villages and local daily lives at Chhong Kneas, a trading port of agricultural products on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake, also known as the Great Lake of Cambodia.

  • Siem Reap - Landmine Museum - USD5

Arrive in Thailand's bustling capital and take in this exciting world of tuk tuks, khlong boats, and street vendors serving up delicious Thai food. Perhaps head out to sample some local specialties as a final farewell with your fellow travellers.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours.

If you prefer not to travel by bus for the day, you are welcome to book a flight between the two cities instead. This flight will be at your own expense, however Intrepid can assist with Airport transfers where required.

21. Do's and Don'ts in Vietnam and Cambodia?

Do's and Don'ts in Vietnam

With many different kinds of travel spots and especially safety, Vietnam is a perfect choice for a family holiday. However, there is something that you should pay attention to in order to have the most comfortable trip.

Do's in Vietnam  :

  • Dress discreetly in public
  • Dress conservatively, especially for female travelers and children. The Vietnamese are quite conservative about their clothes, and it would be disrespectful to wear skimpy clothing in public. Dress appropriately not only to feel free to enjoy your trip but more importantly to show your respect to others and especially in sacred places like pagodas and temples.
  • Be careful when crossing the roads
  • Traffic jam is one of the most terrific things that frighten foreigners first time coming to Vietnam. Riding bikes or motorbikes will be such an unforgettable experience. But the story will be more interesting when you try to cross the roads in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city. Don’t stop as you cross the busy roads. Frightening as it can be, just keep walking. The traffic will avoid you. Pick a spot across the road, stare at it and keep walking, no matter what.
  • Make a bargain
  • Overcharging is also one of the most alarming problems of foreigners first time traveling to Vietnam as locals always think that foreigners are rich. However, this issue affects considerably the image of Vietnamese people on tourists' eye when they read reviews on the Internet. Therefore, remember to make bargain whatever you buy, please read the reviews carefully to consult the prices, or just contact us for local tips and tricks at Luxury Travel.

Don'ts:

  • Wear a lot of jewelry or show valuables in public, especially when in Ho Chi Minh City.
  • When walking on streets in Vietnam, especially big cities like Ho Chi Minh City, if you wear a lot of jewelry like rings or even make a phone call, you will be a target for pickpockets or robbers. Also when you can't speak Vietnamese, it will be such a challenge to ask people surrounding you to help you.
  • Express the affection of lovers in public.
  • Western culture encourages or allows people to be free to show their love or affection. By contrast, it is impolite in Eastern culture countries, like in Vietnam.  You can see couples holding hands, but they will not kiss when many people can see that. Thus, avoid kissing your friends or lovers in front of other people in public places.
  • Give money to the beggars on the street or tourist attractions.
  • Actually, beggars are sometimes not beggars. There is another way you can help people in difficult circumstances like donating to the charity. Children are exploited to earn money to groups of people. So be aware of that.

There are a lot of things you should and shouldn't do when coming to Vietnam, but don't worry, if you have any query or need local help, please feel free to call us at Luxury Travel to have an affordable, safe and local journey.

Do's in Cambodia

  • Dress modestly
  • It is absolutely fine to get dressed up comfortably, or even sexily if you are about to go to a pub in Siem Reap or at a pool party at a luxury resort. However, things are not the same if you are about to visit the heritages. Leave your shorts, miniskirts, and any other clothes that are above your knees or reveal too much skin at home. Put on a long pant or a long dress, instead.
  • Show cultural respects
  • It is necessary to show your respect for the Cambodian people and culture. Social class is quite notorious here, so pay attention to your etiquette when meeting the elderly or the monks.
  • That Khmer people are hospitable and honest does not mean you won’t be overcharged when shopping in their markets or shops. Bargaining is a must-do in almost all Asian countries, not just Cambodia.

Don'ts in Cambodia

  • Give money to children and beggars on the streets. Many of these people are forced to do that job and would get nothing even when you give them money. All would come into the wallet of their “boss” instead.
  • Talk about sensitive topics. It is never a should to talk about politics or war with Cambodian people. Especially, they really hate mentioning about Khmer Rouge period, so do not bring them to your conversation.
  • Be culture offensive. Many things sound to be exceptionally unrespectful to Cambodian people such as touching someone's head, using the left hand to ON’Tsgive and receive things, pointing your feet to other people or to Buddha's images, pointing your index finger to others, complaining about their country, and so on.
  • Show affection in public. Cambodia is still a conservative society and they tend to avoid interacting with people of the opposite gender when they are in public. Holding hands, hugging, and kissing are unacceptable, too.
  • Drink tap water. Tap water is not clean, so avoid drinking it. You can use bottled water instead

  • Be inspired by the hauntingly beautiful and inspirational countryside with shimmering rice fields

  • Stay and tour in Phnom Penh, Pearl of Asia, considered the most beautiful of Indochina's French colonial cities
  • Stay in Siem Reap, the gateway to the Angkor city ruins
  • Visit the Angkor ruins, a UNESCO-listed temple complex and one of the world’s greatest ancient sites

Overwhelming imagery retained by visitors to Vietnam is that of a country blessed with an extraordinary beauty. It’s a mosaic of mist-shrouded mountains, vibrant green forests, a patch-work of rice paddies and pristine white beaches, whilst its villages and cities are custodians of the culture and monuments of a unique 2,000 year old civilisation.

Day 1:Departure

Begin your journey to Hanoi.

Day 2: Arrival in Hanoi

Upon our arrival, we checked into our hotel. Then, we enjoy a wonderful introduction to Hanoi, taking a trip into the city's old town on cycle rickshaws. Later on, we returned to our hotel and spent the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 3: Hanoi

Today we explore Hanoi, past and present. The French created this gorgeous colonial city of tree lined avenues, belle epoque villas, grand public buildings and an Opera house, all built around more than a dozen enchanting lakes. This graceful scene blends beautifully with its old quarter, a tangle of narrow streets, the commercial heart of the city for hundreds of years and now full of tiny shops, pagodas and the ever-present populace astride their bicycles and mopeds.

During our guided tour we also see the beautiful Temple of Literature dedicated to Confucius and Vietnam’s first university, and the imposing marble mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh himself, embalmed and eerily on display.

This afternoon is free for you to explore this beautiful city as you wish. You could even visit a traditional water puppet show (book and pay local)- a real spectacle where, as the name suggests, with the aid of fireworks and music, folk stories are played out by skilful puppeteers.

Day 4: Halong Bay Cruise

Today we visit Vietnam’s greatest natural wonder, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay. Leaving Hanoi, we enter a timeless landscape of rice paddies, following the Red River delta to the emerald seas of the Gulf of Tonkin. Just offshore, some 3,000 limestone islands and outcrops rise almost vertically from the sea, forming one of the most extraordinary and spectacular bays in the world.

As we board our converted Chinese junk (traditional Chinese boat) and glide along the jade-green waters it’s not hard to imagine how the myths of their creation began: a dragon is said to have plunged into the sea and its thrashing tail sculpted the craggy islands. We visit some of the vast and beautifully illuminated caves and grottoes before having lunch on board. We return to Hanoi late afternoon.

Today we fly south to Danang and then drive over the stunning scenery of the Hai Van Pass before descending to Hue, Vietnam’s last royal capital and its traditional centre of religion, culture and education. It’s one of the country’s most beautiful small towns, bisected by the serene Perfume River and dominated by its immense Citadel. This houses the ancient capital, encircled by an amazing 6 miles of high, 65 foot-thick walls and a moat.

Tonight we stay for two nights on bed and breakfast basis at the excellent five-star Senna Hue Hotel.

Day 6: Hue Imperial City

This morning we start with a leisurely river cruise to the magnificent seven-storied Thien Mu pagoda, a working Buddhist shrine, affording beautiful views towards the mountains on the border with Laos.

We then visit the incredible complex of the Citadel and within it, the Imperial City. We see the Palace of Supreme Harmony, which contained the emperor’s throne and was the site of the most important official ceremonies and functions. Everything is painted in the royal colours of red and gold and the whole building is a stunning example of the magnificent lifestyle enjoyed by the Vietnamese royal family.

In the afternoon we visit Emperor Tu Duc’s mausoleum. More interested in poetry than running the country, Tu Duc’s lifestyle suggests he had plenty of free time - he had 104 wives, 50-course meals and tea made from the dewdrops of lotus blossoms! It took 3,000 workers three years to build his amazing mausoleum, which includes a large lake, pavilions and a theatre.

Lunch is included today and the evening is at leisure.

Day 7: Saigon

Today we fly to Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as the locals still insist on calling it. Brash and boisterous, it has real zest for life. Built virtually from scratch by the French, on a bend of the wide Saigon River, we stay three nights on bed and breakfast at the excellent, five-star Equatorial Hotel.

Saigon is Vietnam’s culinary capital offering a very wide variety of excellent dining experiences, from top class restaurants in swish luxury hotels to French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Indian options, plus everything in between.

Day 8: Cu Chi Tunnels

This will be a day to remember! We visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels, a complex underground network stretching for 200 kilometres, which included hospitals, meeting rooms, sleeping quarters and kitchens. Begun during the last years of French rule and vastly expanded during the 1960’s, the tunnels provided a base for the Vietcong from which to attack US forces within just 30 miles of Saigon.

Our visit here is a fascinating insight into these times: we see the tunnels themselves and examples of the many mantraps and stake pits which protected them. Despite being carpet-bombed, the tunnels were never really penetrated, and should you wish, you may even try out real period weapons on a firing range.

We continue through rural farming communities back to Saigon. In the afternoon our city tour covers all the major sights including the colonial-style central post office, the cathedral and the Reunification Palace where famously in 1975, a tank burst through its gates in the final defining moment of the Vietnam War.

We also see the War Remnants Museum and the lively Ben Thanh market a fascinating insight into Saigon daily life, you can find anything here, all at extremely good prices!

Day 9: Mekong River Delta

Today we drive out of Saigon towards the great Mekong River delta. The first stop is at one of the many islands where we walk through a typical village and try out several different types of tropical fruit that are grown in the area. Travelling in small boats we continue our exploration through the narrow canals by visiting the aptly named Coconut Island, where locals specialise in producing rice paper, coconut cakes and other local delicacies. Dappled sunlight filters through the wide leaves of the mangroves as we arrive at a typical local restaurant for lunch. We return to Saigon in the afternoon.

Day 10: Fly to Phnom Penh

Our last morning in Vietnam and we have just enough time for a morning walk round Saigon centre, a coffee and a delicious pastry in one of the many cafés before taking the short flight to Phnom Penh and our hotel, the centrally-located four-star Palace Gate Hotel for two nights on bed and breakfast.

Day 11: Phnom Penh

Today we’ll visit the majestic Royal Palace with its silver pagoda and the fascinating National Museum.

After lunch in a local restaurant, we visit the Tuol Sleng Museum – originally a school, turned into the country’s most notorious prison by the Khmer Rouge, it now charts the terrible suffering during their occupation of the city. Finally, there’s time for a stop at one of the local markets before we return to our hotel for the evening.

Day 12: Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

Today we journey through the heart of rural Cambodia stopping at Kompong Thom for an included lunch en route to Siem Reap.

Day 13: Angkor

Today we visit one of the largest religious structure in the world, Angkor Wat. We see the haunting soft morning light rise over the eerie temples of Angkor. At its height in the thirteenth century, Angkor had a staggering one million inhabitants. The incredible state of preservation, the beauty of its design and sculptures have, for many, made Angkor one of the great wonders of the world.

We visit the fortified 13th century city of Angkor Thom, with its five monumental gates, and 300-foot wide moat - its centre containing the temple of Bayon. We’ll also visit the smaller temple of Ta Prohm which has been left unrestored, with giant tropical trees bursting through the ruins, their roots clinging like tentacles.

Day 14: Siem Reap Free Day

Today we have left free for you to return to the many monuments of Angkor, explore Siem Reap or relax around the attractive pool at the hotel. Alternatively, you could take an interesting tour to the nearby lake of Tonle Sap to visit a floating village (subject to season and water levels - book and pay local) or try your culinary skills by taking an optional half day cooking class (book and pay local).

Day 15: Return home

It's time to say goodbye and start your journey home.
